At 66 meters, with a steel hull and composite super structure, INVICTUS is impressive in size, mighty in stature, and elegant from every vantage point. At over 1900 gross ITC and with a 43-foot beam, INVICTUS is a masterwork in design balance, cutting a supremely graceful silhouette of elegant lines, sculptural shapes, and accelerating curves. Thanks to her remarkable beam and expansive volume, her interiors showcase high ceilings and spacious rooms emphasized by floor-to-ceiling hull-side windows that bring the outside in. Maximizing the beauty of the outdoors is featured throughout her design, the apex of which is experienced as you step inside the master stateroom and are greeted by a 180-degree view of the ocean.

Diane Johnson of Diane Johnson Design, working together with Johnson, Wen, Mulder, was tasked to create something new in yacht interior design, and she succeeded. The result is a work of art that transcends description, incorporating both traditional and modern influences: hints of sublime vintage Hollywood glamour, whispers of an elegant Deco Parisian hotel and a nod to the playful Rat Pack lounge.

With family living the foundation of the design brief, INVICTUS combines luxury and beauty with comfort and hospitality. Grand spaces and opulent foyers are mixed with intimate settees and lounges. In the main salon, a grand piano sits unassumingly among a mixture of furniture perfect for small and large gatherings. On a separate deck, the dining salon, framed by curved sliding glass doors, holds an expandable table that can seat more than 20 guests. An on-deck gym with sliding doors and magnificent views is contrasted by a theater room with raised stadium seating. Hallmarks throughout include different combinations of exotic wood species on each deck, with intricate veneer patterns, a gorgeous use of Italian marbles, and custom Lalique glasswork.

INVICTUS’ outdoor spaces and decks are as breathtaking as the interiors. Characterized by the same grandness as the interior, the decks flow gracefully from the fold-down beach cabana at the stern to the impressive sun deck complete with hot tub, bar, and several areas for dining, lounging, or gathering for cocktails under the stars. Details include custom stainless-steel sconces, loose furniture with a gorgeous table made of ebony and stainless steel, and magnificent oval polished stainless handrails.

The Delta Design Group, responsible for the naval architecture and exterior styling, designed an ice-strengthened steel hull with composite superstructure. Utilizing finite element analysis and its own advanced engineering, they incorporated composite materials, steel, and aluminum into the construction, allowing the best material to be chosen for each application. This efficient and innovative construction approach enabled the designers to achieve the high ceilings and expansive windows that the owners desired.

Powered by twin Caterpillar 3516 main engines and carrying over 50,000 gallons of fuel, the yacht has a 6,000 nautical-mile range at 12 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots. Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers and a Schottel bow thruster ensure maneuverability and a nice gentle ride both at anchor and underway. Her tender garage, with  hull-side doors and overhead gantry cranes for deployment, stows a custom 28-foot Comitti and a Novurania Chase.

Latin for “unconquerable,” INVICTUS is homage to the indomitable spirit at the heart of the 19th century poem by William Ernest Hemley. Strikingly beautiful, flawlessly conceived, and profoundly powerful, INVICTUS embodies the passion of a life lived to the fullest, as described in the namesake poem’s final stanza, “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

Delta Yachts for Sale

Delta Marine is a successful family-run shipyard that builds and refits custom superyachts up to 328 feet (100m) in length. The company is located in Seattle’s Duwamish River, Washington, USA and was founded by brothers Jack and Ivor Jones in 1967.

The brothers initial focus for the shipyard was building sturdy fishing boats capable of handling the frequently rough waters of the Pacific Northwest. Delta Marine’s success in the fishing sector led the shipyard to build luxury expedition yachts that had the capability to take their adventurous owners north to Alaska, west to the Pacific islands, and around the world.

The Delta Marine shipyard now covers 25 acres, with nearly 300,000 square feet of covered manufacturing space in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility.

Luxury yacht building in advanced composites remains a Delta Marine speciality. In addition to new yacht builds, the shipyard offers yacht design and naval architecture in house, although Delta Marine are also happy to collaborate with an owner’s outside design team.

With every new yacht, Delta Marine provides the client with a dedicated point of contact with intricate knowledge of the systems and construction, who can then assist with anything from day-to-day operations to a full refit.

History of Delta Yachts

Delta Marine was originally founded in Seattle, Washington by the two brothers Jack and Ivor Jones in 1967. The location of the shipyard was, and still is, on the Duwamish River. By the 1990s, Delta Marine had begun exclusively building custom superyachts. Through the years, the shipyard has drawn on the craftsmanship of their local pool of talented artisans and have continued to develop and refine their composite yacht-construction technology. As a result, Delta Marine has launched some of the world’s largest luxury superyachts.

A turning point for Delta Marine came in 1989, when the yard delivered the 132-foot (40m) expedition motor yacht LIFE OF RILEY. Delta Marine now has a fleet of around 30 luxury superyachts to its name.

The company prides itself on housing all the marine trades on site, and sources as many American-made products and supplies as possible. Delta Marine continually updates its equipment and invests in new processes and technology in order to strive for superior manufacturing capability. The connectivity across the company’s campus also means that there is an efficient dialogue between the teams working on different projects.

Delta Marine can also handle a spectrum of refit projects. The facility now features covered refit bays and a marine Travelift capable of lifting 440 tons. In addition to refit and repair work performed in Seattle, Delta offers excellent customer service and warranty in any part of the world.

The family-operated company was built on a philosophy of solid trust and honesty; with a mission to foster lasting relationships with every customer.

The Delta collection

In 2008, Delta Marine delivered the notable 124-foot (37.6m) superyacht MARAMA to owners who took her on a three-month, 3,200-mile voyage of exploration, cruising to Alaska and along its coastline. This long-range luxury yacht proved the shipyard’s ability to build comfortable expedition motor yachts that can travel the world’s oceans safely. Full-displacement and with these long-range capabilities, her solid composite hull is based on Delta’s proven naval architecture. Her superstructure, incorporating a complex carbon-fiber mast, was styled by Setzer Design Group.

The 211-foot (64.5m) motor yacht INVICTUS followed, and was launched in 2013. INVICTUS was constructed utilizing finite element analysis and engineering techniques, and has an ice-strengthened steel hull and a composite superstructure. Delta Design Group provided her exterior styling and engineering, while Diane Johnson Design created her elegant interior. This approach enabled the designers to achieve a remarkable beam and an expansive volume. Maximizing the beauty of the outdoors was a key driver with the design of INVICTUS, the apex of which is a master stateroom that offers a 180-degree view of the ocean.

Delta Marine’s fleet of around 30 extraordinary luxury yachts all feature innovative design, advanced technology, and are constructed in composite. Ask the team at Northrop & Johnson for details of vessels currently available.

yacht-invictus-running-shot

Made in America, Invictus is designed for world domination

The owner of the new Delta Invictus is very pleased. ‘The marble work throughout the boat is incredible,’ he indicates as he shows me around. ‘Our goal was to build an American boat that would rival any boat coming out of Europe, and I think Delta nailed it, and then some, in terms of woodwork, finish, design, technical specs – everything.’

The 65.5 metre Invictus , launched in 2013, is certainly one of the most significant new launches in North America in recent times. At first glance, you can sense she is a large yacht, but her incredible volume of 1,945 gross tonnes is well disguised in her classic, elegant lines. Even armed with the knowledge of just how much interior space she offers, nothing prepares you for the sheer scale of her social areas. I’m not talking straight floor area here, although she certainly doesn’t fall short on that count, but in the main deck aft saloon, for example, the deckheads rise into coffers producing an incredible nine feet (2.7 metres) of headroom. The extraordinary airiness this creates, combined with giant floor-to-ceiling windows, means that Invictus ' saloon area, with its sofas, seating areas, fireplace, piano and bar, feels both homey and unrestrained. The décor has room to breathe, and while the finish shows great depth and intricacy, it never becomes overwhelming.

The reason for the towering headroom has to do with the genesis of the project. Begun as a hull with expedition intent, the original lines included a helicopter hangar on the main deck. When the project evolved into what it is now, complete with a slight stretching in the overall length of the Ice-Classed hull, the height of the space created by that hangar was kept and translated into the impressive headroom the yacht offers today. ‘It went from a yacht that was conceived around a helicopter to a yacht that didn’t really need or care about a helicopter,’ says Christian Oliver, a senior designer in Delta’s design department.

‘We had a significant amount of deck-to-deck space to work with between the main deck and the owner’s deck that allowed great expanses of headroom and still left plenty of room to run our systems,’ adds Jay Miner, chief naval architect at Delta. ‘We had more of a challenge on the level below the main deck because that’s where we were paying that price. In the tender bay we had to work hard to get the headroom in there and get the gantries mounted and the tenders and the hull doors in, so that was one region of intensive engineering.’ The tender bay holds both a Novurania Chase 27 sports boat and a custom-built Comitti 8.5 metre tender crafted by a yard based on Lake Como.

Following the dramatic entrance to the saloon from the aft deck, the main deck continues forward with a full-tiered cinema where you might expect to find a formal dining area. ‘It’s got a 103-inch screen, and we put proper windows in there,’ says the owner. ‘So if you want, you can just go in there and cruise and read.’

The forward half Invictus ' of the main deck becomes the family wing for the owner’s children, when running in private mode. Six cabins, three on either side, offer plenty of space and large en suites, and each has a distinctive colour theme chosen by the children. Two further cabins are on the lower deck, while the master suite takes pride of place forward on the upper deck.

Here, a central corridor leads first to a panelled sitting room to starboard then on to his-and-hers en suites outboard on either side. Hers contains a large bath, while his offers a huge shower. Each has floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the elevated view, along with doors to the sidedecks to access the forward owner’s seating area. Gates aft on the side deck can be closed to indicate to crew that privacy is required.

The real wow factor on Invictus , though, is reserved for the forward sleeping area, surrounded by near full-height windows that offer a stunning panorama even from the bed. Windows throughout the yacht are built as close to the deck and as wide as possible. ‘That was always the design intent,’ the owner explains. ‘We wanted to maximise views whenever possible. Even in the cabins on the lower deck the oval windows are huge.’

The aft part of the upper deck is an ample formal dining area with two snug seating areas forward on either side. ‘We travel with a lot of friends, so Delta built us an amazing table that could seat 22,’ says the owner of Invictus . ‘We designed the area so you can have a cocktail and relax before stepping to the table. And when the kids want to break off and watch TV and we want to sit and talk or have a drink, we’re not separated. That’s why we made sure we had a bar at every level – you’ve got to be prepared.’ For the dining service, pantries with dedicated china are on every level, ready to receive dishes from the industrial-standard galley located on the lower deck.

The bridge is pushed to the top deck, giving captain and crew a commanding view, while aft is an outboard gym to port with doors that open to the fresh air. Farthest aft is a bar and saloon that, with matte black and plush red décor, feel like they have been lifted from a Parisian nightclub. ‘This has become one of the more popular spaces,’ the owner of Invictus says. ‘It’s a big bar where you can lounge and relax, and a TV comes up from the cabinet. The detail in the metalwork and ceiling, and the backlit bar, are incredible. Delta did an unbelievable job. Our designer Diane Johnson is great with details and making rooms very accommodating.’

Not surprisingly, exterior spaces are equally remarkable. Invictus' huge sundeck – built of carbon fibre to save weight aloft – includes an aft spa pool, a bar under the arch, sunbeds, big awnings, a large dining table and loose seating and furniture. ‘The space up top is so important. We were careful to make the most of it,’ notes the owner.

Apart from a large circular dining table on the bridge aft deck, nearly all the deck furniture is freestanding. ‘The yacht was intended to be more like a great home, a great apartment that you would find in London or Manhattan,’ notes the owner. Furniture that’s not built-in felt more like home to us.’

The concept of Invictus was based on the owner’s experience with his previous boat, a 45M Bennetti. ‘We travel with a lot of people, have a big family, and enjoy entertaining, so we wanted spaces that are comfortable and fun, where you can relax and it still feels like a home even though it’s a big boat.

‘We are all very proud of her. It’s been a great effort,’ says the owner as we finish our tour. ‘You know, there are a lot of great yachts out there, but this stands above them all. I’m a little biased probably, but I think it’s true!’

Delta 48 Coupé first look: Is this the sharpest-looking boat on the market?

  • Top stories

Delta Carbon Yachts has released the first renderings of the Delta 48 Coupé – a fully enclosed 50-knot sportscruiser with some of the sharpest lines afloat...

The new Delta 48 Coupé measures just over 49ft long and, as with the rest of the Swedish yard’s range, features an all-carbon hull and deck to keep the weight down and improve performance and fuel efficiency.

Despite a generous 13ft beam, the new model weighs just seven tonnes, roughly half the weight of a Princess V50 , so even when it’s powered by the same 440hp Volvo D6 engines (albeit on sterndrives rather than IPS pods), it should reach a top speed of 44 knots in comparison to the British boat’s 31-knot maximum.

While Delta hasn’t yet released any fuel burn rates, this should also make for exceptionally fuel efficient passage-making at its comfortable cruising pace of 32 knots.

For owners more focused on speed than fuel efficiency there is also an option to fit it with a pair of Mercury’s latest 600hp V12 Verado outboards .

In this guise it should easily top 50 knots flat out with a fast cruise of 40 knots. The design credits for the hull go to the performance boat gurus at Mannerfelt Design, famous for producing some of the world’s fastest race and leisure boats.

Recommended videos for you

It’s not all about speed though – the deep walkaround decks on both sides of the wheelhouse should make it a safe boat to crew and move around, enabling guests to access the sunpads on the foredeck as well as the stern.

A sociable cockpit with fixed seating on all four sides of a teak table makes al fresco dining possible, while the hardtop overhang and extended side buttresses should add some protection from the wind, spray and sun.

A hydraulic platform on the sterndrive version also makes carrying a small RIB possible. Sliding glass doors give access to the wheelhouse, which features wraparound glazing and slender mullions to maximise visibility from the helm.

A large retractable fabric sunroof further enhances the feeling of an open boat. A portside dinette opposite a galley to starboard keeps all the living space on one level. A pair of two-person benches on either side of the companionway ensure the skipper can be joined by up to three guests.

Absolute 48 Coupe review: Back in the sportscruiser game with a bang

Princess v50 yacht tour: see inside this fabulous 50ft sportscruiser.

The lower deck is purely for overnighting duties with two mirrored guest cabins amidships sharing a starboardside bathroom and day head. The owner’s cabin forward enjoys the lion’s share of the space as well as its own ensuite bathroom.

The build of the first Delta 48 Coupé has already started at Delta’s facility in Estonia with delivery expected in early 2023 in time for its debut at Stockholm’s Allt för Sjön boat show in March.

Prices start at €945,000 excluding taxes, but expect a fully specified one, including a Seakeeper gyro stabiliser , to weigh in at around €1.44 million including VAT.

“I’ve always been a fan of Delta’s approach to building boats. Speed and fuel efficiency are two sides of the same coin; get one right and the other will follow,” says MBY editor Hugo Andreae.

“It doesn’t hurt that this new Delta 48 Coupé also happens to look the business. Hopefully this will be the model that finally cracks the UK market.”

DELTA MARINE Yachts – Operating Since 1967

Delta Marine is located in Seattle, Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. The family-run shipyard build and refits custom superyachts up to 100m in length.

The shipyard achieves the highest standards in yacht building by developing relationships with customers and pursuing a mission to perform at the highest levels.

DELTA MARINE history

Delta Marines found its start in 1967 when brothers Ivor and Jack Jones founded a shipyard on Seattle’s Duwamish River. Delta Marine’s focus was on building fishing boats capable of handling the rough seas of the Pacific Northwest.

Their success in the fishing sector led to the shipyard building luxury expedition yachts. Owners could explore all the corners of the globe, such as the Pacific Islands and Alaska.

Delta Marine was developing custom superyachts exclusively by the 1990s. They have used the elite craftsmen from their local areas and continue developing and refining their composite yacht construction technology.

The 100m yachts that Delta Marine produces today are among the most beautiful in luxury standards worldwide.

The shipyard still continues as a family-run affair with Ivor’s daughter, Michelle, as Marketing Manager for Delta Marine, her sister Trisha in accounting. Jack Jones’ son, Chris, is in the production department.

DELTA MARINE notable launches

Delta Marine’s prowess in the yacht building industry is apparent with their most notable and custom launches.

The MLR, launched in 2019, is one of these fantastic yachts. The 53m yacht features interior and exterior design from Jonathan Quinn Barnett.

The MARAMA was delivered to her owners in 2008, who proceeded to take her on a three-month exploration of Alaska and its coastline.

The voyage totaled 3200 miles. The long-range yacht was the best example of the shipyard’s ability to build comfortable expedition yachts for select clientele.

The 65.5m INVICTUS marked another achievement for Delta Marine as they delivered her in 2013. Delta Marine Group, the shipyard’s in-house design team, developed her exterior styling and engineering, with Diane Johnson Design crafting a luxury interior design.

Delta Marine continues in its pursuit of developing high-end bespoke yachts for its select clientele.

Their prowess in the luxury yacht industry is cemented by their commitment to high standards of professionalism, dedication to innovation and creativity, and the ability to translate this into stunningly crafted vessels that feature high-end design concepts and state-of-the-art technology.

An environmental assessment certificate has been issued for the Tilbury marine jetty project on Tilbury Island in Delta, following a decision by the Province.

George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, made the decision after carefully considering the environmental assessment of the proposed project conducted by B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). The assessment involved extensive consultation with technical experts, federal and local authorities, First Nations and Indigenous groups, and the public.

The proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelling jetty will be used to fill carrier ships exporting LNG and bunkering vessels that then refuel ships in other locations. The project will be supplied from the existing FortisBC Tilbury LNG plant nearby.

The ministers concluded that provincial requirements would avoid or minimize the potential negative impacts of the project in areas of provincial interest. In making their decision to issue a certificate to Tilbury Jetty GP Inc., the ministers considered the views of First Nations, the marine transportation project’s footprint, and the role that LNG and, in future, renewable fuel can play in decarbonizing the marine shipping industry. After extensive consideration of marine fuel decarbonization pathways, the ministers included a condition that will require the Tilbury marine jetty to make fuelling space available for renewable fuels to the extent that demand and supply exist. The reasons for the ministers’ decision are available here:  https://www.projects.eao.gov.bc.ca/api/document/6604818734f3c20022682699/fetch/Reasons%20for%20Ministers%20Decision%20-%20Tilbury%20Marine%20Jetty%20-%2020240327.pdf

The ministers issued a certificate with 22 legally enforceable provincial conditions that must be followed over the life of the project. These include plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, opportunities for First Nations’ monitoring of construction and operations, opportunities for Indigenous employment and procurement, and measures to reduce impacts on water quality, air quality, and cultural and archeological resources.

The project also requires federal approval. The B.C. EAO carried out the assessment on behalf of the federal government under a “substitution agreement.” This meant one assessment carried out by the EAO was used to support separate decisions by each level of government, eliminating the duplication of two assessments for a single project.

The EAO concluded that the project would contribute to cumulative effects from marine shipping and recommended 181 federal mitigation measures to address impacts in areas of federal jurisdiction. These include measures to reduce impacts related to marine shipping, marine accidents, greenhouse gas emissions, underwater noise, fish and fish habitat, southern resident killer whales and First Nations fishing.

While the federal decision is pending, the ministers have written to the federal ministers of Environment and Climate Change, and Transport, and are urging them to impose the EAO-recommended mitigation measures if the project receives federal approval.

Quick Facts:

  • Tilbury Jetty GP Inc. must still receive all required federal approvals and provincial permits and authorizations before construction can start.
  • Tilbury Jetty GP Inc. estimates construction expenditures between $154 million and $260 million over four years, supporting more than 1,000 full-time jobs.
  • A proposed expansion of the existing FortisBC Tilbury LNG plant on Tilbury Island is a separate project, which is undergoing its own environmental assessment.
  • The jetty project is not dependent on this expansion.
