The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

As its popularity and success rate has grown over the last years Moscow Boat Show 2012 has developed to incorporate more than just an exhibition. These special events serve to attract leading exhibitors and visitors and allow all participants the chance to broaden their knowledge and of course their sales potential.

Moscow Boat Show helps representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improves national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 4 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar. The organizers of the exhibition aim to bring together on the same platform all key national and worldwide players and to offer an excellent platform to encourage networking among specialists and visitors in order to accelerate the development in this field as well as implementing new technologies, the newest equipment, materials and components.

What the International Skeletal Society (ISS) achieved over the last 50 years

How it all began.

Starting in 1972, the idea of an international society dedicated to interdisciplinary musculoskeletal work became reality step by step. In 1974, the International Skeletal Society (ISS) held its first annual meeting including a refresher course, in Washington DC. The society journal ( Skeletal Radiology ) still was in the planning phase at this time. Its first volume appeared at the beginning of 1976.

There are larger scientific societies than the ISS, some of them with a longer history. However, the ISS has been unique since the beginning and still is. The founding generation defined the society in the bylaws, whose general principles are still valid. They may be summarized as follows.

The society brings together radiologists, pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists dedicated to musculoskeletal imaging. It contributes to the understanding, diagnosis, and therapy of musculoskeletal disorders. This should be accomplished by discussion of clinical case studies, by the publication of scientific papers and reviews, and by continuing education in the field of musculoskeletal disorders. The society runs its own scientific journal. It fosters the development of groups or societies in countries and regions where the diagnosis and clinical management of musculoskeletal disorders are less advanced. The ISS limits membership to those who have a substantial interest in the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. This has been translated in a number of membership criteria including the proportion of professional activities dedicated to the musculoskeletal system, publications (especially those submitted to Skeletal Radiology ), reviewing for the journal, and educational activities.

These ISS concepts have determined the actions of the society for half a century and still represent the basis of its success.

The last 50 years

The interdisciplinary/interprofessional character of the ISS has remained quite unique. Although it makes sense to bring various specialists together, this is easier said than done. Few other societies have achieved this as systematically as the ISS which brings together radiologists, pathologists, and other experts for a vigorous interdisciplinary discussion of musculoskeletal topics, with an emphasis on tumors. Although the diagnostics have changed a lot since 1974 with the appearance of CT, MRI, ultrasound, digital radiography, PET/CT, and an impressive development of diagnostics tools in pathology, the interdisciplinary discussion remains crucial. The first part of the annual ISS meetings is dedicated to intensive scientific discussions that go beyond simple scientific presentations, and that further an in-depth understanding of disease according to the original aims of the society. The second part of the meeting (a refresher course) not only may be geared towards radiological topics but also offers interdisciplinary discussions with clinicians and pathologists.

Scientific publications are another consistent contribution of ISS members towards the understanding of musculoskeletal disorders. Papers are published both in Skeletal Radiology and in other suitable journals. There is an ongoing discussion relating to case reports. Their scientific role has been debated not only at universities and among journal editors but also by the ISS membership since the founding of the society. Case reports do not have the prestige of original papers and may not count for academic promotion. With the specific understanding of ISS goals, they remain relevant however. Many diseases are too rare to allow a classical study design, which leaves little choice other than the thorough evaluation and discussion of single patients. Case reports may allow young physicians or those living in low- and middle-income countries to contribute to the scientific debate because they can be written with limited financial support. Obviously, the ISS does not limit its scientific activities to case reports. Original papers are relevant and play an important role for the ISS and the journal of Skeletal Radiology . Such papers often discuss topics that may not be covered in depth elsewhere, for instance in musculoskeletal interventional radiology or the diagnosis of neoplasm, infection, and metabolic disease.

For many members, the ISS and its journal of Skeletal Radiology are more than yet another scientific society with yet another journal. Members consider belonging to the society an honor and demonstrate it with their activities. They advance science, teach, or contribute to committee work. Friendship rather than simple acquaintance between members is common.

Current activities

Despite the importance of ISS principles, there need to be permanent developments to stay on top of current requirements. The ISS has consistently adapted or added new teaching formats, including online annual meetings (with a boost due to COVID-19), hybrid meetings (persisting after COVID-19), and app-based interactive teaching. To reach additional groups interested in musculoskeletal diseases, a successful core lecture series was introduced which can be accessed without cost via the ISS web page. The Outreach Program intends to provide state-of-the-art teaching based on interactive workshops with top teachers predominantly in low- and middle-income countries. Their physicians often cannot afford to travel to annual meetings which are typically held in major cities with their high price level. The outreach program has consistently grown over the years and represents one of the most important society activities.

Young physicians and colleagues from low- and middle-income countries may encounter problems with the subspecialization, publication track record, and teaching experience required for an application for an ISS membership. Other societies are competing for young talent with student programs or junior membership categories. The ISS does not intend to copy such concepts but has introduced alternative solutions to attract the future stars. This includes the successful scientific sessions during annual meetings of the ISS or the possibility for young physicians to present at the unknown cases meeting, and the opportunity to publish in Skeletal Radiology .

Quite a few developments of the ISS concern the management of the society which requires in-depth knowledge in handling an up-to-date member database, financial activities, contracting with congress centers and hotels, meeting registration including CME credits, communication, and legal compliance. For quite some time, the ISS has been supported by a professional society and meeting management company working closely with the leadership and the many specialized committees of the ISS.

A glance at the future

While looking back at the last 50 years is worthwhile, the ISS never forgets to plan the future and to adapt where necessary. Critical assessments, both scientifically and on the management side, are part the society’s DNA. Current discussions include higher visibility with the help of current communication methods including social media, increased use of streaming of scientific events, and a recently approved podcast series. Recently, the Donald Resnick Visiting Professorship aimed at exchange between “rising stars” and institutions of ISS members in a structured fashion has been started. A number of other projects are in the pipeline.

In summary, the ISS founders’ principles have shaped an extraordinary scientific society with a very special spirit, able to attract the best experts in their field. These principles are still valid and provide excellent guidelines for shaping of the future of the ISS.
