Miguel & Lil Yatchy Deliver New Experimental Single “Number 9”

Miguel and lil yachty turn the experimentation up a notch on new single, “number 9,” from miguel’s forthcoming album..

Miguel taking full advantage of his “Sure Thing” resurgence on TikTok. The singer-songwriter, born Miguel Jontel Pimentel, has released new single “Number 9” featuring rapper-singer Lil Yachty , slated to appear on his forthcoming fourth studio album. The long-awaited release follows Pimentel’s 2017 LP, War & Leisure .

Produced by Brook D’leau, “Number 9” has a poppy bounce that deviates from Pimental’s prior R&B-centric material. The single also makes Yachty’s latest guest appearance since he released fifth studio album, Let's Start Here , in January.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times , Pimentel shared that his new album will be focused on his divorce from ex-wife, model and influencer Nazanin Mandi, as the content mainly deals with grief. The 37-year-old also spoke about his multi-genre interests, saying that the music industry wasn’t always inclusive to his range of musical tastes.

“I’m not even going to mince words. I’m gonna keep it a buck,” he told the Los Angeles Times . “I came up in a time where the industry was very different. And the promo department at the label was very antiquated. What I was doing and the artist that I knew that I was, there was no real space for that at the time.”

15 years after its radio debut, Pimentel’s “Sure Thing” ran up the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year, due to it being a trending song on TikTok. The song originally appeared on the artist’s 2010 debut album, All I Want Is You .

“I’m just really excited to have new fans that are going to discover me in the midst of it,” Pimental said on Apple Music’s The Chart Show in March. “I think it’s an opportunity for people to, hopefully for anyone who likes that song specifically, just get into the journey of it. I think there’s something dope about that, that we don’t really get to do, especially because my career started as social media began as well.”

Miguel And Lil Yachty’s “Number 9” Takes Us On A Trip

2000’s R&B sweetheart Miguel doubles back with new single “Number 9” featuring rapper-turned-rockstar Lil Yachty.

2000’s R&B sweetheart Miguel doubles back with new single "Number 9" featuring rapper-turned-rockstar Lil Yachty.

“Number 9” Brings Together An Unlikely Pairing

Recognized as a prodigy in the genre, Miguel teams up with one of hip-hop’s rookies of 2023, Lil Yachty . The unexpected R&B collaboration takes us on a hallucinogenic trip with a simplistic beat and layering of Miguel’s buttery vocals. But, genre-bending is nothing new for rapper/singer Yachty. As his latest critically-acclaimed album Let’s Start Here. ventures into psychedelic rock and pop. His new sound had the internet in shambles, earning him respect and recognition.

This year, TikTok brought a new life to 2010 hit “Sure Thing” climbing the charts 13 years after its release. It was only right to reward fans with new music. “Number 9” follows his forthcoming album’s lead single “Give It To Me” released in April. “Number 9” incorporates Miguel’s effortless dulcet vocals with hidden metaphors over the psychotropic production. According to a statement from Miguel, “Number 9” is “about end[ing] the old, starting new, and the cylindrical nature of change.”

Miguel Welcomes Change In This New Chapter

Moreover, Miguel welcomes self-growth and development and experiences a rebirth in “Number 9.” “Breaklights off in the distance, don’t follow me / And the sky came crawlin’ out beneath the waves (Huh) / Crashin’ in to the sun, ain’t no stoppin’ me / And when the checkered flags are waved / There’ll be no one else and nothing left of me.” He sings about having a gun on top of his tongue that stores kisses instead of bullets. “Wide awake, keep up / Fallin’ shapes, don’t die / On my tongue, a lap / On my lap, a gun / In the gun, a kiss / Let it blow your mind.”

Yachty sweeps in with a melodic verse on “Number 9” calling himself the “gran reaper.” He will creep into your dreams, follow you everywhere and has the power to awaken your mind. “Fell your default and emotions / Fulfillin’ devotion / Don’t you get away, I’ll be on your skin like lotion / Livin’ inside your brain, I’m the reason your brain’s open.”

Meaning of Number 9 by Miguel (Ft. Lil Yachty)

Album Cover

Miguel (Ft. Lil Yachty)

Listen to the full song on Apple Music

"Number 9" by Miguel (ft. Lil Yachty) is a song that explores themes of power, mortality, and the relentless pursuit of desires.

The chorus sets the tone with enigmatic lyrics that create a surreal and mysterious atmosphere. The repetition of "Wide awake, keep up" suggests a sense of urgency and vigilance. The phrase "Fallin' shapes, don't die" could refer to the unpredictability and constant changes of life, urging the listener to stay resilient and adaptable.

The line "On my tongue, a lap" evokes a sensual and intimate experience. It could symbolize indulging in pleasure or tasting the forbidden. This is followed by "On my lap, a gun," a juxtaposition of violence and vulnerability. It speaks to the idea of having control and power over someone or something.

The image of "the number nine" serves as a recurring motif throughout the song. It can be interpreted in various ways, such as a representation of fate or the cyclical nature of existence. The dust returning to the number nine implies a cycle of life and death.

In the verses, Miguel sings about breaking away from the ordinary and embracing a path of his own. The reference to "break lights off in the distance" signifies leaving behind societal expectations and forging a unique journey. The crashing into the sun portrays an unstoppable force and a determination to defy limits.

The bridge introduces Lil Yachty's verse, where he assumes the persona of the grim reaper and asserts his dominance. He claims to see and understand everything, even the hidden depths of people's emotions. The metaphor of living in someone's brain suggests a haunting presence, exerting control and influencing thoughts.

Overall, "Number 9" conveys a narrative of self-empowerment, the search for fulfillment, and the inevitability of mortality. It encourages listeners to embrace their desires, navigate life's uncertainties with resilience, and recognize the transient nature of existence.

Miguel keeps the new music grooving with his “Number 9” single featuring Lil Yachty.

Over a hypnotic soundbed by Miguel and Brook D’Leau , the R&B references life’s changing moments.

“Wide awake, keep up / Falling shapes, don’t die / On my tongue, a lap / On my lap, a gun / In the gun, a kiss / Let it blow, you’re mine,” he sings before Yachty follows with his guest verse.

“I am the grim reaper / I’m the street sweeper,” raps Lil boat. “I am the nightmare dream-stalker / There’s not too much that gets past my two eyes.”

The collaboration follows Miguel’s previous single, “ Give It To Me ” and are both off his forthcoming album. Meanwhile, Lil Yachty can be found on clothing brand 1017 ALYX 9SM’s single, “ Warriors “

Brake lights off in the distance Don’t follow me And the sky came crawling out beneath the waves Crashing into the sun Ain’t no stopping me And when the checkered flags are waved There’ll be no one else and nothing left of me

Wide awake, keep up Falling shapes, don’t die On my tongue, a lap On my lap, a gun In the gun, a kiss Let it blow your mind Till the dust returns To the number nine

I am the grim reaper I’m the street sweeper I am the nightmare dream-stalker There’s not too much that gets past my two eyes Even at night Better think twice Feel your deep-rooted emotions Fulfill the devotions Don’t you get away, I’ll be on your skin like lotion Living inside your brain (There’ll be no one else and nothing left of me) I’m the rizz and your mind’s open

(With my eyes shut wide) Wide awake, keep up Falling shapes, don’t die (And my mind goes blank) On my tongue, a lap On my lap, a gun (When I don’t know time) In the gun, a kiss Let it blow your mind (And I need some space) Till the dust returns To the number nine

James Blake and Lil Yachty dovetail on Bad Cameo

"bad cameo".

JB x Lil Y Bad Cameo cover

As two of the most restless figures in electronic and hip-hop music, this collision feels right.

James Blake can switch from blue-eyed soul crooner to banger merchant in a heartbeat; Lil Yachty made a psychedelic LP in 2023 just for the hell of it. While its sudden announcement was a surprise, a full-length project between the two is nothing if not an interesting proposition.

The first question for any such joint effort is, of course, how do they fit together? Will they conjure gorgeous new sounds like Bob Plant and Alison Krauss, or an ungodly racket like Metallica and Lulu ? Will they push each other to new heights like Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA, or goof around aimlessly in the sun like Shaggy and Sting?

Thankfully, the pair drop straight into a captivating partnership. It’s complementary stuff, not so much yin and yang as yin and a bit more yin. While their solo works bear little resemblance to each other, they have similarly low-key delivery methods. Yachty is a mumbler extraordinaire, while Blake doesn’t sing songs so much as haunt them. The title track opens Bad Cameo in plaintive form, the heavily treated vocals rippling over one another before blending into the calm waters of the instrumental. It’s hard to tell where Blake, Yachty, and even the loops begin and end; it’s all a comforting, zenlike oneness.

This is no ambient comfort blanket, though. The pair build tension and anxiety on “Red Shoes”, first in the paired vocals that occasionally touch on discordance, later with the buzzing synth that sounds like a phone vibrating insistently on a wooden desk, undoubtedly bearing bad news. The lyrics hint at a fear of a future that might yet go unfulfilled - “I wanna be here for the first grey hairs / And when they arrive we’ll roll out the red carpet,” Blake sings, slowly, nervously. Then, above the stress-inducing throb of the phone-synth, Yachty reaches, relatively speaking, a fit of pique: “All of my mistakes were made under a microscope / I can’t learn in peace… / What gives them right to judge my faults?”

Bad Cameo ’s instrumentals are often sparse in the interest of foregrounding the above-the-line protagonists, but a lot of the best musical moments come when the pair get to show their creative turn of pace. “In Grey” piles up sequenced runs that chime like otherworldly church bells, somehow electronic and pastoral all at once. Suddenly Blake’s euphoric vocal ad libs trigger a sharp turn into the first great lift off. Everything’s given over to the skittering trap beat and a bassline that alternately chugs and lurches. “Missing Man” deploys a similar trick. Already boasting one of the album’s best set of harmonies, it’s buoyed further when the beat drops at the halfway point, resulting in one of the record’s most complete tracks.

The least satisfying moments often come when the tunes are particularly heavily weighted towards one performer or another. “Transport Me” just sounds like Blake producing a quite good beat for the Atlanta rapper; Yachty then delivers lyrics (not his strongest suit) for a full minute. Similarly, “Run Away From The Rabbit” loses a lot of momentum during the lengthy stretch of Blake emoting over a reverb-drenched piano - we’ve heard that plenty. During these moments, the result is briefly less than the sum of its parts.

But then they pull out something like the bustling, immensely catchy “Twice”, working with the strengths of both performers. Yachty snaps away at the sticky hook, with Blake adding priceless texture and making the track throb with thick bass. True to form, the song can’t stay still for more than a couple of minutes. The blissful pop of the first movement gives way to the pulsating and combative second, with Yachty in motivational speaker mode: “You think they shit don’t stink? / Fuck ‘em! / Fuck all them!”

Even for those of us who’d never before considered the possibility of a James Blake and Lil Yachty collab, Bad Cameo somehow provides exactly what you’d expect. Ideas in abundance, terrific variety, a little indulgence, and an end product that actually makes perfect sense.

James Blake & Lil Yachty Captivate & Surprise On "Bad Cameo"

bad cameo

Just over four months ago , Lil Yachty shared an interview clip on Instagram talking about James Blake . The key quotables from it were these: "I think James is working with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists, but this project is just... so left. For both of us". "It's just gonna be like 'what the f***?! When they do this?!'". After that fairly vague soundbite, the trailer-like post made things a little clearer. "CMYK PRESENTS 'BAD CAMEO' A FULL LENGTH ALBUM BY JAMES BLAKE & LIL YACHTY". Fans were undoubtedly excited and intrigued, but no one was sure when we would receive it. Thankfully, on June 6, both artists shared the album cover, as well as the release date.

We are happy to say that Bad Cameo is here today, June 28, and it is quite tremendous. That may be a surprise to some, but perhaps why this album works is all thanks to Let's Start Here. That LP by Yachty opened the versatility floodgates and most likely gave James Blake and the rapper belief that this would be possible. Honestly, though, it does more than just get by it passes with flying colors. Sure, there are some moments where it feels like one artist is in more control than the other. But the number of times that they mesh far outweighs the moments where they clash. In fact, that is so minimal that we would argue the album nearly flawless.

While that might be recency bias kicking in, hear us out. The instrumentals, which are handled by Lil Yachty, James Blake, BNYX, Dom Maker, and SADPONY, are all so unique from each other. Like the beats, the vocals are also extremely captivating and feel futuristic at times. Furthermore, the lyrical content is deep, self-reflective, and emotional, and they almost always complement the moods of the sonics. This is far from a traditional R&B/hip-hop album. Bad Cameo is something truly extraordinary and needs to be explored again and again.

Producer, singer, and songwriter James Blake is known for his unique style, which wraps aching, gently sung R&B vocals around the deep bass and minimal rhythmic elements of dubstep. He arrived in 2009 with a series of 12" singles and achieved both critical acclaim and worldwide fame following his self-titled 2011 album. His renown continued to expand over the next several years, and he collaborated with pop icons like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Bon Iver. His second album, 2013's Overgrown, earned him the prestigious Mercury Prize. Commercial success worldwide came in the middle of the 2010s, with high chart placings (as well as critical praise) for 2016's The Colour in Anything and 2019's Assume Form. 2021 saw Blake issue his fifth long-player, Friends That Break Your Heart, which included features from SZA, JID, SwaVay, and Monica Martin. Blake revisited his earlier, dubstep-influenced sound with 2023's Grammy-nominated Playing Robots Into Heaven.

Born James Blake Litherland in London in 1988, Blake was raised in a musical family. He was classically trained in piano from a very young age and focused on musical studies throughout his education. While still very young, he and his friends became fixated on electronic music, in particular the emerging dubstep sound that was beginning in London in the mid-2000s. He took inspiration from early U.K. dubstep artists like Burial, Distance, and Skream and merged it with influences from textural R&B innovators like D'Angelo while developing his first original tracks. Blake's R&B-sampling strain of dubstep first arrived in the form of his Air & Lack Thereof 12" on the Hemlock label in 2009. He received quite the endorsement when the heralded Soul Jazz label picked the track up for their Steppas' Delight 2 compilation that same year.

Blake raised his profile every few months during 2010 -- something of a breakout year for him -- with a succession of warmly received 12" releases: The Bells Sketch (Hessle Audio, March), CMYK (R&S, June), Klavierwerke (R&S, October), and the single-sided Limit to Your Love (Atlas, November). The last of the series -- a cover of a song by Feist in which Blake's heartfelt vocal was placed front and center -- served as a precursor to his first full-length, issued the following February. Titled James Blake, it made a major impression, and was eventually nominated for a Mercury Prize but lost to PJ Harvey's Let England Shake.

Blake returned to Hemlock for the Order 12", then reverted to Atlas for Enough Thunder, a six-track EP with a Bon Iver collaboration and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You." Yet another 12", Love What Happened Here, was out by the end of 2011. Blake spent much of 2012 working on his second album, releasing new work under the name Harmonimix, and performing less often as the new songs percolated. In April 2013, his second album Overgrown appeared, featuring collaborations with Brian Eno and RZA. It won that year's Mercury Prize, and Blake's songwriting was acknowledged when "Retrograde," one of the album's highlights, won an Ivor Novello Award in the category of Best Contemporary Song.

Apart from an Airhead collaboration and an EP on his 1-800 Dinosaur label, little was heard from Blake for three years. He resurfaced in April 2016 with contributions to Beyoncé's Lemonade. A couple weeks later, The Colour in Anything, his third album, arrived with only a few hours' advance notice. Recorded in England and at Rick Rubin's studio in Malibu, California, it included input from Bon Iver and Frank Ocean. The album peaked within the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Dance/Electronic chart. That year, Blake also contributed to Frank Ocean's Endless, Vince Staples' Prima Donna, and Travis Scott's Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. He continued into 2017 with appearances on Jay-Z's 4:44 and Mount Kimbie's Love What Survives; he also produced "Element" for Kendrick Lamar's DAMN.

In 2018, Blake was active as a co-writer/performer of two songs on the soundtrack to the superhero blockbuster Black Panther: he contributed to the single "King's Dead" alongside Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Jay Rock, and to "Bloody Waters," also co-written by Lamar. "King's Dead" would go on to win 2019's Grammy for Best Rap Performance, Blake's first Grammy win after multiple nominations over the years. Several singles arrived throughout 2018, beginning in January with "If the Car Beside You Moves Ahead," followed by "Don't Miss It" in May. Throughout the year, Blake's production and vocals appeared on new albums by experimental electronic artist Oneohtrix Point Never and mainstream rapper Travis Scott.

His fourth album, Assume Form, was released in January 2019 and included guest spots from Metro Boomin, Andre 3000, and Travis Scott. The LP netted Blake another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Alternative Music Album. The following year saw him issue the EP Before, with a second EP, the aptly named Covers, arriving later that winter. In early 2021, Blake issued the single "Say What You Will" ahead of the arrival of his fifth studio effort, Friends That Break Your Heart. "(Pick Me Up) Euphoria," a collaboration with Labrinth recorded for season two of the HBO series Euphoria, appeared in 2022. Wind Down, an ambient album created using AI technology and intended as a sleeping aid, was also released during the year. Two collaborations with Metro Boomin, "Hummingbird" and "Nonviolent Communication," were included on the soundtrack to the 2023 blockbuster Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The dancehall-inspired "Big Hammer" was released as the first single from Blake's Playing Robots Into Heaven. Issued in September, the album marked a return to his early club material on U.K. bass labels like Hemlock and Hessle Audio. The album and single "Loading" were nominated for Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance/Electronic Recording, respectively. ~ David Jeffries & Andy Kellman

Rapper Lil Yachty brings feel-good positivity, druggy weirdness, and wild ATLian flair to a style he self-designated "bubblegum trap" in his early days, while becoming a figurehead of the movement sometimes known as "mumble rap." Within two years of scoring his first platinum single in 2016, he had a pair of Top Ten albums with 2017's Teenage Emotions and 2018's Lil Boat 2, and a Grammy nomination for DRAM's "Broccoli," on which he was featured. Between the release dates of those proper albums for the Quality Control label, Yachty's approach shifted from a reliance upon willfully off-key singing and lackadaisical rhyming to that of a comparatively traditional MC, albeit with his irreverent sense of humor still gamely displayed. His style continued to evolve with his successive recordings, including 2020's Lil Boat 3 and the psychedelic rock of 2023's Let's Start Here. He launched his group Concrete Boys with 2024's It's Us, Vol. 1.

Born Miles McCollum in the metropolitan Atlanta city of Mableton, Yachty began to break in 2015, when Drake's OVO Sound Radio aired his bizarre and singsongy "Minnesota." He truly crossed over in 2016. During the year, he released Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2, his first two commercial mixtapes for the emergent Quality Control Music. The former featured "Minnesota" along with "One Night," a woozy party cut that reached number 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, cracked the Hot 100, and went platinum. Also during the year, he was featured on DRAM's "Broccoli" and Kyle's "iSpy," both of which went Top Ten pop, and was part of Chance the Rapper's Top Ten release Coloring Book. "Broccoli" was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Coloring Book took the award for Best Rap Album.

Yachty continually added to his secondary discography as a collaborator, most visibly beside Carly Rae Jepsen on a remake of Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two," but during 2017 and 2018, he directed most of his energy toward his first two proper albums. Teenage Emotions, issued in May 2017, peaked in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, highlighted with the charting single "Peek a Boo," featuring Migos. Yachty returned the following March with Lil Boat 2, on which he sounded more like a traditional rapper with greater emphasis on enunciated verses and a reduction in off-key vocalizations. With tracks featuring PnB Rock, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, and Trippie Redd among its highlights, the album went Top Ten on multiple Billboard charts. That year, Yachty also released Nuthin' 2 Prove, which included "Who Want the Smoke?" with Cardi B and Offset. The set peaked just outside the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 and reached number nine on the R&B/hip-hop chart.

Lil Yachty issued a handful of stray tracks in 2019. Early the next year, he teamed up with Lil Keed and Zaytoven for the A-Team mixtape, and soon hit the Hot 100 as a lead artist for the third time with "Oprah's Bank Account," featuring Drake and DaBaby. That May, following the release of "Split/Whole Time," Yachty issued Lil Boat 3, which contained the two preceding singles and entered the Billboard 200 at number 14. A deluxe version of the LP, Lil Boat 3.5, appeared later that November. Extending his prolific run, he issued his third mixtape in May 2021. Inspired by the Michigan underground, Yachty recruited a team of Detroit and Flint rappers for Michigan Boy Boat, a U.S. Top 40 hit. Following 2022's "Humble," a collaboration with Diplo, he scored a minor hit with the solo track "Poland." His fifth studio LP, Let's Start Here, arrived in January 2023. In interviews preceding the release of the album, Yachty stated it would be more of a psychedelic record with live instrumentation than a traditional rap album. In keeping with the rock vibe, the album reached number one on Billboard's Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums and number nine on the Billboard 200.

Yachty quickly returned to creating experimental trap songs, issuing non-album singles like "TESLA" and the J. Cole collaboration "The Secret Recipe" (from the EP of the same name) before 2023 was over. He ventured into dance music with the 2024 single "stayinit," a collaboration with Fred again.. and Overmono. He then debuted Concrete Boys, a group that included Camo!, Karrahbooo, Dc2trill, and Draft Day. Their album It's Us, Vol. 1 landed in the top half of the Billboard 200. ~ Andy Kellman & David Jeffries

James Blake and Lil Yachty ’s new collaborative album, Bad Cameo , has arrived.

A product of both artists’ admiration for the other, Bad Cameo sees Blake and Yachty lean into each other’s strengths to break new ground. The two first connected when Yacthy reached out to Blake in 2020 with praise for his album Assume Form , and they soon began working together, sharing an interest in innovative, ambient sounds.

Speaking about their collaboration in a recent interview with Zane Lowe , Yachty explained that Blake inspired him to “do better,” saying, “just being around and experiencing him work pushed me to try to have reason in my songwriting and to just live up to the quality of James’ catalog.”

Blake, for his part, revealed that he had mostly written off collaborations prior to working with Yachty, saying, “there’s a certain point in your career where you’re like, ‘Well, I don’t have to do this…’ Now I’m like, ‘How can I preserve my space? How can I only have fun?’ And we just, I mean, our sessions are 99% unserious.”

Stream Bad Cameo in its entirety below via Apple Music or Spotify.

Bad Cameo is Blake’s first full-length release since last September’s Playing Robots into Heaven , and Yachty’s since last January’s Let’s Start Here .

Meanwhile, both artists have live dates coming up. Blake has a pair of Italian shows in July, and sets at festivals Bumbershoot and Beautiful Block Party. As for Yachty, he has a number of headlining shows coming up in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, and more. Get James Blake tickets here and Lil Yachty tickets here.
