Came by here for dinner a few days ago. I understood they were having issues with their chef, so they were using a small menu printed on computer paper. We started with wings, shrimp, and calamari to start. All the appetizers were pretty good. I had a lobster roll as my main course and it was rather disappointing. It didn't taste fresh at all. The place is a bit dated inside, but offers nice water views.
Lobster roll ($27)... it was eh
Sagamore Yacht Club has been a fixture on Oyster Bay Harbor for over 70 years. It is a very friendly well kept club that is both informal and traditional in many ways. The club offers year round activities and launch service for members and transient guests throughout the boating season. Members and their guests have full access to the two full bars and the club has recently added an in house chef who has done a superb job elevating the only place that one can eat on Oyster Bay Harbor into a league of its own. Call for details: 516 922 0555 or visit sagamoreyc.com.
This Venue is located in Oyster Bay and is part of a quaint boatyard whose banquet room can be rented out for special events. I attended a family outing here and it was nicely put together. They have a full bar as well as a facility to make food. It was catered by Jack Halyard's whose food was amazing. Nice quaint venue for a family outing.

A traditional, yet relaxed yacht club...
It must be every year sailboats and power yachts from all over the world stop to enjoy it’s enchanting vistas and pristine waters. The historic village of Oyster Bay was chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt as the site of his summer retreat, Sagamore Hill. With equal wisdom, the founders of Sagamore Yacht Club selected a spot with a breathtaking view of the bay.
Thanks to the environmental policies of The Town of Oyster Bay, this is the only bay on Long Island Sound from which shelfish may be taken legally. The water it’s clean and it’s kept that way. No breeze on a hot summer day’s? Relax, and swim off your boat.
Most sail and power boats in Oyster Bay are kept on moorings. The moorings are on a "grid" of properly spaced Loran locations organized by the town, similar sized boats are grouped together in sections. This means your boat has room to swing safely without danger of being hit by a nearby boat - a common problem in crowded harbors. Even the sizes of the mooring anchor, chain, double pennants, etc., although owned by and the responsibility of the boat owner, are specified by the Town to assure the safety of boats. A mooring permit for a resident of Oyster Bay is $20.00, but even a non-resident pays only $35.00, a remarkable bargain.
Sagamore Yacht Club is for boat people, both sail and power. It reminds you immediately of those many ship-shape yacht clubs you encounter cruising New England waters. By land, the first thing you see is the large blacktopped private parking lot with marked car spots, and scrupously clean because it doesn’t double as a boat yard. The clubhouse suits a membership of active boaters. wpe5.gif (28022 bytes)The first floor has a large meeting and party room with a fire place, an air conditioned bar with a view of the bay, and a galley. Upstairs are restrooms and showers, the boardroom, Commodore’s office, and an outside deck for relaxing and viewing the waterfront and bay. The clubhouse is the scene for many activities throughout the year; dinner dances and parties celebrating every seasonal event or holiday you can think of, informative lectures, a weekly bridge night, and general membership meetings. Outside overlooking the water are covered and open air patios which provide perfect settings for dinners, parties and barbecues. The waterfront includes the main float with covered benches to await one of the three club launches. It also provides temporary docking for members and guests. wpe1.gif (33034 bytes)There is a similar float for washdowns and loading and unloading which also docks four outboard tenders for use by members. A third float is for Junior Sailing Program dinghies or temporary tieup by members. Fresh water is available on all floats. Gas and Diesel fuel and boating supplies are available at the marinas next door.
The Adult Sailing Program runs some fifteen sailboat races each season for spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats of all sizes. The Junior Sailing Program a full summer program of supervised instruction and racing for children to age eighteen utilizing club-owned Blue Jays. Powerboaters enjoy a variety of events including predicted log contests, group cruises and senior and junior fishing derbies. A common sight at day’s end is a raft-up of both power and sailboats together on one of the two club moorings in Oyster Bay. The camraderie at Sagamore Yacht Club is it’s most precious asset.
Sagamore Yacht Club is affordable! Dues for a new Regular Member in 1999 is only $1,550.00 (plus tax). That includes not only all the benefits noted above, but also includes launch service on radio call from 0800 to 2400 on summer weekends and conveniently long hours on weekday as well. Compare neighboring harbors. They are crowded, mooring sizes and spacing are not controlled and people do not swim in the water. but it still costs about $1,000.00 for mooring and launch service. It can also take a good thirty minutes to motor out of the mooring area. In Oyster Bay you can sail or fish when you cast off! As with any club, there’s a one-time initiation fee of $700.00 which is non-refundable and a property bond payment of $850.00 which can be deferred over three years and which is refundable when you leave the club. The reason these figures are so much lower than other Long Island yacht clubs is because we don’t have a swimming pool and "pool memberships". Sagamore Yacht Club is owned and operated by it’s members and it’s members are boaters.
You can spend a full season enjoying all the benefits of club membership without paying the initiation fee or the bond amount. Simply become a Visiting Member by paying 125% of the regular dues. We also offer intermediate memberships at special rates for younger adults and families and a house membership for those between boats or those who wish to enjoy the special aspects of a yacht club. Still not convinced? Give us a call and 10 minutes of your time, if you want the best out of boating, it will be the best 10 minutes you ever invested. If you have any questions, please contact Treasurer Dorothy Titus.
The Sagamore Yacht Club was founded in 1944. Back in the 1930 and 1940 the Roosevelt Memorial Park (and marina), owned and maintained by the Roosevelt Memorial Association, was turned over to the town of Oyster Bay. At the time it was occupied by few large boats.
It was decided at this gathering to contact the Town Councilman, Elmer Brooks to ask if it were possible to have the marina and a small building for the "Club". It was agreed that the Club would operate the marina and that an attendant would provide service for gas, oil, ice, snacks and landing privileges to the general yachting public. The Club's name, Sagamore, was chosen in honor of Teddy Roosevelt, whose summer white house is located in Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay.

An insider’s sailing guide to New York
An insider’s guide to sailing New York
Setting out from Newport, Stonington makes a good destination for the first night. While there is dockage available in this quaint New England town, the chances are that you will decide to take a mooring. It’s what most people do and there’s a good launch service. Once ashore, take a drink at the Dog Watch within the marina before heading downtown, to walk around a selection of restaurants and coffee shops. Nothing huge, just a quiet and attractive spot to spend your first night.
Alternatively, you could press on to Mystic and Noank. These are a bit further to the west so they would present a longer sail to get from Newport, however they also would make good options for the return trip. The Mystic River is beautiful. A trip to the Mystic Seaport Museum , further up the river is well worth a visit. Arriving by water into the seaport is like going back in time.
Thimble Islands
The unique geography of the Thimble Islands on the Connecticut shoreline make this archipelago another key place to visit. This area is more exposed to weather from the south so it’s important to keep an eye on conditions if you plan to stay overnight. If you’re passing through from Stonington heading west, these islands make a perfect midway stop for lunch.
Huntington & Oyster Bay
Back on the Long Island side, Huntington is a convenient stopover before heading into New York. Getting the tide right from here on is key, so this is a great place to stopover and prepare for the leg into New York’s East River. Huntington Bay and the harbour are both big areas with plenty of places to stop so it’s pretty easy to find somewhere to moor or drop anchor.
Alternatively, slightly further to the west is Oyster Bay, home of the Seawanhaka Yacht Club . This elegant and prestigious club, (which claims to be one of the oldest yacht clubs in the western hemisphere), has a long and proud history for racing. Among the many places to stop, Cold Spring Harbour or Oyster Bay Marine Centre are popular.
New York City
From Huntington / Oyster Bay you can time your arrival into the East River to catch the south going tide that will take you to Manhattan. It’s important to get this right as the tide running past Astoria Park and Randall’s Island runs fast – it’s nicknamed Hell’s Gate so you definitely want to be going with it rather than against it! From there you head down to the tip of Manhattan from where there are three key choices as you turn north into the Hudson River.
The first is North Cove Yacht Harbour . This is on the Manhattan side and is very close to Ground Zero. Just a little further to the north is Chelsea Piers . On the New Jersey side Liberty Landing is the third option. This is the most popular for many as it provides a spectacular view across the water to the Manhattan skyline, but it is still easy to get into town using the water shuttles or the subway.
Now you are in New York, sailing past the Statue of Liberty is a must – it never disappoints. If you have time on your hands and want to explore further, head over to Sandy Hook Bay. While there’s nothing on Sandy Hook to go ashore for, it’s an impressive place to anchor and hang out as you take in the view. It’s also a handy place to spend the night before setting out east if you plan to return to Newport in one hit by sailing to the south of Long Island.

Montauk & Sag Harbour
At the eastern end of Long Island, Montauk is famous for its sports and commercial fishing. Its position at the very tip of the island makes it a remote and often windswept place, great if you are after that wilderness feeling.
Alternatively, a little further to the west, Sag Harbour offers a very different experience. Well known for being where the rich and famous like to hang out, there are beautiful bays with beaches and sand dunes and small islands.
There are plenty of places to pull up and anchor and the bustling cosmopolitan town has plenty to offer. From both Montauk and Sag, getting over to the south coast of the island takes you to some spectacular, seemingly endless beaches which are popular for walking and surfing. Alternatively, renting a paddle board on one of the salt water ponds also makes a fantastic family activity.
Cruise Tips
Because Long Island Sound is protected from weather coming from the south, it’s generally an easy and comfortable place to cruise, it’s New York itself that can be the issue. In the height of the summer it can be pretty hot so the best times to visit are either side of this, spring/early summer and the late summer/fall.
The closer you get to the city, make sure you plan your trip around the tides. Plugging into a foul tide can make life unnecessarily hard whereas the opposite can make the trip a breeze.
A copy of the Eldridge Tide & Pilot Book is essential.
