RYA President HRH The Princess Royal today made her first in-person appearance at an official event since the death of her father, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, meeting with members of the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Fishbourne, Isle of Wight.
The Princess spoke fondly of her "early memories of sailing with her father" at the Royal Yacht Squadron and took time to speak to senior members and a group of aspiring young sailors.
Asked by Club Commodore Jamie Sheldon about the vessels she had sailed on, Princess Anne said: "I started really with Bloodhound (a yacht). I then regressed to dinghy sailing for a bit."
Princess Anne smiled as she spoke with some of the younger sailors and asked about their sailing experience.
The Princess then left the Royal Yacht Squadron on board "Warrior", before arriving at Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Fishbourne, where Commodore Chris Rickman and RYA Chair Chris Preston joined the welcoming party.
Commenting on the royal visit, Chris Preston said: “It was an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club during her visit to the Isle of Wight today. The club has a distinguished and colourful history, built up over 175 years, and a thriving youth section and it is very much a community club. The Princess showed great interest in the club's history and activities including the staging of the 1908 Olympic Yacht Races."
The Princess Royal’s visit to the island comes ahead of the Duke's funeral this Saturday at Windsor Castle. Prince Philip, who passed away aged 99 on Friday, was Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, patron of a number of clubs and served as President of the Royal Yachting Association for many years.
It was announced at the weekend that the royals and their households would observe two weeks of mourning, with members of the royal family "continuing to undertake engagements appropriate to the circumstances", according to a royal official.

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club was founded at Ryde , on the Isle of Wight and uniquely granted 'Royal' status immediately. In 1845 the club was granted a warrant to wear the Red Ensign of HM Fleet. From 1872 until 1898 the club held the warrant to wear the crown defaced Red Ensign . It currently holds the warrant for its defaced ensign. [1] It is the second club of that name, succeeding a failed club on the Thames [2] and preceding its namesake in Canada by nearly fifty years. It was once regarded as one of the premier yacht racing clubs of the world. [3] In 1961, after two world wars and the decline in yacht racing as the preserve of the wealthy, the Royal Victoria amalgamated with two local dinghy sailing clubs and moved its base to Fishbourne on Wootton Creek, some 5mile west of Ryde where it remains.
It is said that the club was formed by Prince Albert to give Queen Victoria a yacht club which she was entitled to enter as a mere female. [4] Prince Albert was clearly involved in the formation of the club as were local businessmen and active yachtsmen. The Prince had no reputation as a yachtsman. The first royal yacht had been launched two years earlier, owned and managed by the Royal Navy. In the year that the RVYC was formed the Queen and Prince Albert had started to build their summer home on the Isle of Wight. They became the nearby RVYC's first patrons at its genesis. There is no record of Victoria having entered the club. Much later in Victoria's reign her relations with the club became strained and she withdrew her patronage. It was not until the AGM of 1869 that a proposal was passed to allow "...Ladies to have Club privileges afloat as Club members but not to make use of the Club House" to cater for the growing fashion amongst wealthy women cruising and racing in their own right. [5]
The town of Ryde was then developing into a fashionable resort and the sport of yacht racing was expanding from racing on the Thames under the auspices of the Cumberland Fleet to the Isle of Wight and the Solent . The Royal Yacht Squadron had developed an annual regatta at Cowes and the Royal Victoria went on to develop an annual regatta at Ryde to take place immediately after the Cowes regatta. This extended the developing Solent yacht racing season to two weeks. As the sport grew so this trend continued. The foundation of the Royal Albert Yacht Club at Southsea (1865) led to the extension of the racing season by a further week. [6]
Many of the members of the Royal Yacht Squadron became members also of the Royal Victoria. The club was sometimes referred to as the 'Red Squadron'.
On 2 March 1846, at Ryde, the ceremonial laying of the foundation-stone of the original clubhouse by H.M. Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort took place. [6]

The busy RVYC Squib fleet enjoy just under 50 club races a year in an active group of around 20 boats. The 2 race days are particularly popular with numbers at the startline seeing between 6 and 14. In addition to the club racing there are 7 Solent regattas. So, even with a few of our top racers campaigning on the mainland, there’s plenty of racing to keep all the Squib owners busy from Spring to December.
The wooded foreshore and Wootton Creek give a wonderful backdrop for our racing and the Cowes Week & Round the Island Race provide us with the continual drama of the big events.
Now the important bit : The barrels and wine are well looked after and the lawn out the front of the club is the perfect place to swap stories between friends.

Ten juniors and their families joined 144 Tera sailors at the Nationals hosted by Royal Victoria Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight. We received a warm welcome from the organisers and faced every type of weather that the Solent had to offer.
Naomi, Oliver and Dexter took part in the 'train and race' regatta fleet. They enjoyed their first time out on the big sea sailing for 45 mins to their race area closer to the shore. They managed the tricky conditions of gusty winds, tides and avoiding the Fishbourne Ferry and came in each day smiling with confidence.
The main fleet was Ella in the pro fleet, and the sport fleet was Noah C, Rollo, Emma, Noah W, Ben and Issac. We were all very appreciative of the support that ESC and the Blake Fund gave, plus the Club rib which provided a support boat for our sailors. In fact the support boat became a safety boat which was very much needed in the strong gusty winds and large waves near the Solent shipping lanes.
Every sailor showed resilience and grit as they were taken well out of their comfort zones. They showed great team strength supporting each other when boats failed and needed replacements on the race course, or when some sailors returned on safety boats after receiving bangs to the head.
Time off the water was enjoyed too with the RVYC hosting a bbq and time at the campsite playing rounders with the very little energy they had left! The sailors all enjoyed themselves and are now looking forward to participating in our Junior Race Week next week and to hosting our Tera Open on Saturday 30 September.
Well done to all our participants!

When travelling around the Island or indeed out walking how many historic artefacts go unnoticed?
Sometimes even if we notice them the question may arise “what is that?”
Pictured here are some historical artefacts that you may or may not have seen, and a brief description of their history.
Scroll through our photos above
A decorative lamp standard adorns the junction at the top of Oakhill Road near Ryde, where it meets Pondwell Hill.
Dating from around late 1890s to early 1900 it belonged to the St Helens Electric Light Co Ltd, founded by a man with the interesting name of Edmond Ironside Bax.
This has been listed as a Grade 2 artefact.
Also in Ryde, a building that most people pass everyday has many a tale to tell, this being The Prince Consort.
Have you ever wondered how it got its name? When Queen Victoria lived at Osborne her husband Prince Albert applied to join the Royal Yacht Squadron.
However, so the story goes, he was refused membership, mainly because he was German, so what did Victoria do?
She built him his own rival yacht club, thus named The Prince Consort Yacht Club.
It proved to be very prestigious, having many influential people of the time as members.
Walking along the beach at Bembridge you may notice a building fronting the beach. On the front elevation you will notice an old faded sign scripted on the wall stating The Garland Club.
It records that here in 1894 a Colonel Moreton founded the Garland as a ladies' private bathing club.
Unsubstantiated rumour had it that it later became the private haunt of a group of top Hollywood actors, but that appears to be more of Isle of Wight folklore.
Driving along the south coast of the Island you come to Brook. As you pass the turning to the village, on the seaward side you will notice, near the cliff edge, an old stone shed.
This was the old Brook Lifeboat Station.
Opened in 1890, it was instrumental in many heroic rescues.
The lifeboats stationed there saved more than 150 lives.
The lifeboat, which would have been a very large open boat, would be rowed by the crew. It would have been hauled down a cut in the cliffs by horse power, and upon recovery a winch would have been operated to pull the boat back to the station shed.
The station closed in 1915.
Perhaps one now for the walkers. As is widely known, the Second World War pipe line P.L.U.T.O. ran across the Island, eventually ending in France and aiding the war effort by the delivery of fuel.
The route it took across the Island was a closely guarded secret, which helped the avoidance of any sabotage attempt.
The pipeline was secretly marked for the repair workers should any maintenance be needed, but how was it marked? By fake stiles with upright concrete posts, crossed by wooden slats and concealed in hedgerows.
A few of these markers can still be found across the Island.
It is just a short ferry trip from Portsmouth
An Isle of Wight village with a yacht club, idyllic beaches and easy access to Hampshire has been named the 'poshest' area on the island.
In a recent Telegraph article listing the 'poshest' parts of the UK, areas across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight were ranked by the media outlet as the 'poshest' in the area.
They were scored on a number of factors including desirability, house prices, lifestyle amenities, chocolate-box appeal and connectivity using data provided by Savills.

Regions from across the country were ranked based on how 'posh' they are - and in Hampshire, it was Beaulieu that came out on top.
The village is located on the edge of the New Forest and boasts artisan stores that line a period high street.
A short trip over the Solent though and it was Fishbourne that was named the 'poshest' place on the island.
Located close to Ryde on the north east of the Isle of Wight, the average house price in Fishbourne costs a cool £509,356 and when you take a closer look at the village it is easy to see why.
Easily accessible from Portsmouth on the mainland via its ferry the village is very much a gateway to the island.

The village is home to Quarr Abbey, one of the island's most popular destinations and is home to a group of Benedictine monks.
The site has beautiful architecture, a tea garden and a farm shop.
There are also a number of beaches in the area.
The Telegraph article said: "With overseas travel made difficult throughout the pandemic, UK tourists flooded to the beaches on the Isle of Wight.
"First come the tourists and then the home-buyers, says RPS Youngs’ Jan Claridge.
"Buyers who can work flexibly, and love to sail, are heading for pretty Fishbourne on the banks of the Wootton Creek, by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the car ferry to Portsmouth for easy access to the mainland."
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club has some 500 active members and has been operating in the area for over 175 years.
There is an extensive range of activities held on the water by the club throughout the year including sailing sessions and training events.

The prince consort, st. thomas street, ryde, isle of wight, po33 2dl.
Enjoying a stunning location on the seafront at Ryde, overlooking the Solent, the Prince Consort building was formerly known as the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and was built at a cost of £4,500 and completed in 1847, with the foundation stone having been laid by Prince Albert in the spring of the previous year. Unable to enter the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, which was a male-only establishment, Queen Victoria effectively set up the Royal Victoria Yacht Club as a rival.
The Yacht Club was based in the building until 1966, after which it has had a varied history, having initially traded as a restaurant. In more recent years, the upper two floors have been converted into stunning apartments enjoying wonderful views and the convenience of a town centre location. The lower two floors were last in use as a call centre but have lain vacant for some years.
The freehold of the building is now offered for sale with scope and potential to bring the lower two floors back into meaningful use. Previous, though now lapsed, Planning Permissions were achieved in 2016 for conversion of the ground floors with both residential and commercial options and usage.
Isle of Wight Council. Tel: 01983 823552. Website: iow.gov.uk.
Planning Permission was granted by Isle of Wight Council under ref: P/01130/15, dated 29th April 2016, for proposed internal and external alterations, to include replacement of access gates, to refurbish lower ground floor offices and to convert part of lower ground floor and ground floor to a residential unit (revised scheme) (revised description), subject to conditions.
Planning Permission was granted by Isle of Wight Council under ref: TCPL/24772/P0000705/02 for conversion of the upper ground floor into a single residential unit and refurbishment of ground floor offices, subject to conditions.
These consents were not actioned and have now lapsed.
The lower two floors have most recently been in commercial usage as a call centre and supporting offices but include on the ground floor the grand reception, being the triple-aspect reception room overlooking the Solent, formal reception, state room and a range of smaller rooms, including kitchens, ladies’ and gents’ cloakrooms and ancillary offices. The lower ground floor offers a further range of offices and supporting infrastructure.
Sold on a 999-year lease from 1st December 2005 at a current ground rental of £100 per annum.
Sold on a 999-year lease from 1st December 2001 at a current ground rental of £100 per annum.
Car parking to the front, and walled garden to rear which includes additional car parking accessed via the adjoining car park, subject to a licence arrangement.
Vehicular access to the walled garden/car park is subject to a 125 year lease from 14th November 2002, at a current rental of £2,000 per annum.
The freehold is to be offered, with the first floor and penthouse level apartments sold on a long leasehold basis, paying a combined ground rental of £200 per annum and contributing to the management and maintenance of the building.
