Symbol was founded in Taiwan in 1982. The brand enjoyed considerable popularity in the U.S. market from the mid to late 1980s well into recent years. According the the Symbol website, Symbol was the first Taiwan boat manufacturer to build planing hulls. (In other words, until 1982 all Taiwan boat builders were making either sailboats or trawlers.)

In 1998, Symbol entered a new era when noted American powerboat and superyacht designer Jack Sarin, naval architect, signed on with Symbol as exclusive designer. Prior to opening his own full-service marine design firm is 1980, Jack Sarin was the principle of commercial and merchant ship projects working with famed Edwin Monk, Sr. Jack Sarin’s work, ranging from luxury motor yachts to fishing vessels, patrol boats, fire/rescue, and other commercial or industrial boats in the Pacific Northwest helped establish the region as one of the world’s yacht design and construction centers. Sarin’s portfolio includes the first GRP (glass reinforced plastic) mega-yacht, 98ft “Golden Delicious” launched in 1988. Jack Sarin is renowned for designing and engineering superior, seaworthy hulls with loads of volume and aesthetically pleasing timeless lines. The Symbol ride (particularly of the 2005 70ft 68 Pilothouse) is characterized as flat, quiet, comfortable in all sorts of coastal wave conditions, as well as being easy to handle and maneuver.

Jack Sarin’s 2010 Symbol 55 Classic received high marks for its spacious volume and luxurious appointments such as the L-shaped leather lounge seating 10, a home-sized wine chiller, chest freezer, Bose surround-sound system, plentiful storage cabinetry, large galley with top brand appliances, and featured a Euro transom with dual access from the oversize swim platform to the enlarged cockpit. Designed for long passages as a comfortable offshore home away from home, with deeper keel, semi-displacement hull, and long water lines to provide the smooth, soft, and quiet ride that Symbol is known for. Access to the generous flybridge is from a teak ladder in the pilothouse or a ladder from the cockpit.

The flybridge features a fully equipped helm station and lounge seating for 9-10. The BBQ cabinet houses a refrigerator/freezer and icemaker for an ideal entertainment area. Aft of the BBQ is an area large enough to store a 13ft dinghy and hydraulic crane.

Three key features of Symbol Yachts hull make the boats sea kindly, stable, and very comfortable, that also greatly contribute to the vessel’s ease of handling. Displacement hull is the main feature. Heavy displacement boats do not get tossed around with breaking waves or confused seas making a much more comfortable and safer voyage. Another key feature is the long keel that helps the boat track, but more importantly, it gives the boat greater stability and sea-kindliness by adding displacement and bottom weight. The keel also protects the props and drive shaft in the event of accidental grounding. Thirdly, the vessel’s waterline length as a greater proportion of the overall hull length is ideal for a passage style boat for a more sea-kindly vessel, unlike planing hull powerboats, such as sportfishing yachts where wetted surface is designed to a minimum to attain performance speeds.

Symbol Yacht’s success in the yachting industry stems from its mission to ensure customer needs are met or exceeded, through innovative solutions developed in-house, and by extensively checking each yacht to meet international standards in the yacht industry, such as ISO 9001 and ABS requirements, in addition to Symbol’s standard of excellence.

All models were built to ensure quality and performance—including the Classic, Sundeck, Pilothouse, Trawler and Motoryacht series. Many of the Symbol models available in the preowned market today have unique features as semi-custom boats specified by the original owner or as refit, upgraded older models. Currently only nine Symbol Yachts are available in the US yacht brokerage market and they range from a 1986 Symbol Sun Deck 41ft trawler at under $50,000 to a Jack Sarin designed 2005 70ft Symbol 68 Pilothouse listed at about $1.1

Symbol 42 Motoryacht: A Sea of Relief

  • By Eric Colby
  • Updated: April 1, 2001

You’re on the annual trek from New England to Florida for the winter when you feel a bump against the boat’s bottom. What do you do? If the boat is a Symbol 42 Motor-yacht, you’ll probably just smile and keep going. The prop and rudder are both protected by a shield that extends aft off the keel. This extension also provides a strong pivot point for the bottom of the rudder shaft.

More good news: The 42 Motoryacht has a semi-displacement hull, so the boat is faster than pure trawlers. With a single 420-bhp Cat 3126 diesel, it hit a top speed of 15.7 mph. The best rpm setting is 2400, at which the boat ran 12.8 mph with a range of 411 miles. Extra efficiency is gained from the use of lightweight foam coring in the hullsides, deck, and flying bridge. The 42 Motoryacht is built for extended living aboard. There’s lots of stowage, including a mammoth in-sole locker adjacent to the galley. The microwave/convection oven saves galley space. Besides, no one bakes on a boat. At 8’4″ wide, the aft stateroom is larger than some Manhattan studio apartments and it sports a berth wider than a typical queen. Fore and aft heads are all molded with standup showers and electric toilets, but where the outlet hoses for the heads pass through the sole, the sealant was poorly applied.

For skippers, the upper and lower helms have all the requisite gauges, and there’s extra space for aftermarket electronic navigation equipment. The salon provides room to stretch out on cushy lounges and a TV/VCR is included. Also, the wetbar can stock up to 12 bottles.

Critical for extended living is ease of maintenance. Hinged aft salon steps raise and lock in place with a barrel bolt to provide entry to the engine room. (I’d like to see a gas-strut support added.) The engine room has 4′ of headroom, and the single motor looks lonely, installed on steel mounts bolted into plywood-cored stringers. The batteries are in boxes to starboard, and all the hoses are color coded. Plus, the fiberglass fuel tanks resist corrosion.

What about competition? The Atkinson Cape Island 43 Trawler is wider at 15’4″. It’s built in Nova Scotia for year-round use in harsh northern climates. Each boat is custom built. Base retail price for the 43 Trawler is about $350,000 with a 420-bhp CAT.

LAST WORD. Peace of mind on every voyage.

Condition & Valuation

VESSEL DESCRIPTION

Specifications measured or from research

  Summary: Satisfactory – Good

Summary: Satisfactory

Summary:  Satisfactory

Summary: Good – Excellent

Overall Summary: Satisfactory – Good

Standard form key:     We use subsection and overall ratings to summarize conditions found, based upon their appearance.  Ratings include: Not examined, Not applicable, Faulty, Marginal, Satisfactory, Good, Excellent.

The actual cash value is the value that our research approximates the selling price of this vessel should be, at the time and place of our inspection.  Consideration is given to vessel’s condition, geographic location, published listings and guides, comparable sales and listings, and market conditions.  The new replacement value is the cost of this or a similar, new vessel, comparably equipped.  The investment is the reported investment including purchase price and significant upgrades.  No values include maintenance costs, storage or tax.  The most relevant data found while researching the value is included below.  We primarily use market value analysis methodology for determination of value.

Explanation of value opinion: The value is based on the soldboats.com reported sale prices and the yachtworld.com listing prices.  The large amount of data brackets the value.  This boat’s value is in the higher range of values, based on its size and quality.  The best comparable sale is the 2002 Symbol 50 that sold for $325,000 in September, 2019 in Punta Gorda, Florida.  This boat is two years newer but sold before the Covid-19 demand spike, which increased values.  The next best sold boat comparable is the 2000 Hampton 490 that sold for $350,000 in January, 2020 in Dana Point, CA (before Covid).  The best comparable listing is the 2001 Symbol 52 asking $395,000 (San Diego, CA).  This boat is one year newer and larger, thus has more value (we surveyed that vessel and appraised it at $360,000 in March, 2021).  Based on our inspections this vessel is in better condition than the 2001 Symbol 52.  The condition, the continued influence of the Covid-19 demand and the location were all factors in the appraisal.

Founded in 1982 by CEO Jimmy Cheng, Symbol Yachts believes that the success of any business lies on the foundation of good people. Recognizing the importance of the artistry, skill, and craftsmanship of a mature work force, Symbol is one of a small number of Taiwanese yacht builders that have remained loyal to their roots and workers. With over 20 years of experience with various Taiwanese shipbuilders, Jimmy Cheng founded Symbol as the first production boat builder of planning hulls in Taiwan. 23 years later, Symbol has grown to become a successful exporter and builder of semi-custom motor yachts, trawlers, and pilothouse yachts.

symbol yachts

In 1998, the world-renowned naval architect Jack Sarin signed on to become Symbol’s exclusive designer. The flowing contours of Sarin’s style are immediately evident on the 75; with signature designs such as large windows, soft curves and smooth transitions. A result of years of experience in designing yachts for many of the world’s leading builders, Sarin’s signature has become a staple of Symbol’s line today with yachts ranging from 42’ to 90’ in length.

symbol yachts

For Symbol, beauty is not just skin deep. They have found their customers are not just looking for an inexpensive Sarin look-a-like; they expect a beautiful boat with superb engineering. Above all, because some of the finer details, such as the true artistry behind Sarin’s lines and the contour of his hulls are most apparent in physical experience, Symbol encourages sea-trials so customers can learn for themselves the difference between true value and a good bargain.

symbol yachts

Meeting ISO 9001 and ABS requirements, Symbols facilities are situated a short distance from Kaohsiung International Airport and now covers over 110,500 square feet with more than 60% under shed. Symbol employs 150+ skilled workers, carpenters, electricians, mechanics, designers, naval architects, and engineers, most with 20+ years of experience.

symbol yachts

The new Symbol 75’ will feature a completely open floor plan. The salon, the galley and the pilothouse will take full advantage of the large windows that abound with unobstructed views throughout. Designed as a true live-aboard, there are minimal variations in the floor’s elevation, with only a minor step up to the galley and pilothouse. This open plan allows un-encumbered socializing and freedom to move about.

symbol yachts

Because the 75’ has an expansive flybridge helm, the wheelhouse is kept minimal in size to allow increased dining and galley accommodations. With so much of today’s integrated electronics going digital, vast instrument panel space is not really a necessity.

symbol yachts

The Symbol 75' will be available in a five stateroom lay-out. A full beam master will be located midship with it's own private access to the salon. The Symbol 75’s engine room is located just aft and may feature a lazarette entrance just off the swim platform, a feature usually found on much larger yachts.

Symbol 62: Believe the Hype

  • By George Sass, Jr.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret that may severely limit my career opportunities in the marine industry outside the magazine world: Certain boatbuilders rely on more smoke than a Colorado wildfire and more mirrors than a New Orleans house of ill repute.

Price doesn’t necessarily translate into quality, and a well-known brand name doesn’t always deliver predictability. I should know. In another life, I was the guy aiming the smoke machine so the only thing a customer would see was the nameplate glued to the side of his shiny new boat. I participated in meetings where we addressed poor quality by writing a brochure about our superior quality, where we solved price resistance by throwing in a few Turkish towels and a polo shirt (at cost to the buyer, of course). Most amazing is that people bought into it. I’ve seen guys put more research into buying a $60,000 car than a million-dollar yacht.

If you are one of those guys, stop reading. Chances are you won’t appreciate the Symbol 62.

If you are looking for a well thought out, well executed and stylish design sold at a realistic price, read on.

The Symbol 62 joins a line that ranges from the traditional and popular 42 to the more modern 80. The 60 series includes the Jack Sarin-designed 62 and 66. Symbol founder Jimmy Cheng earned his stripes working for venerable Taiwanese boatbuilder Ocean Alexander, and the background shows in attention to systems and craftsmanship on the 62.

“I’ve been very lucky”, said Rick Torgerson, president of Heart Marine, Symbol’s dealer in the Southeast. “It seems all my buyers have been smart and experienced owners who recognize what the Symbol offers.”

Our test boat provided a superb ride. At lower speeds, she tracked well with an easy motion.

Unlike some semi-displacement hulls that simply substitute horsepower for engineering, the 62’s modified-V hull does not push water while struggling to plane on her aft chines. Instead, the motion is sweet as the 62 casts water aside at the forward chine. Our test boat’s owner, Claude Rule, who has about 30,000 sea miles under his belt, usually cruises around 12 knots, with the 800 hp 3406E Caterpillars sipping about 14 gph combined.

“But if the weather turns foul or I need to get back, I can push her up to 20 knots, and she’s dry,” he said. In fact, our test boat topped out at nearly 24 knots while carrying stores for a month of cruising.

Symbol accommodated Rule’s request for extra fuel, increasing capacity from the standard 1,200 gallons to 1,800. Our test boat’s four tanks allow a cruising range of about 1,500 miles at 10 knots. Fuel fills were mounted off the deck, and the overflow vents were mounted inboard. This will prevent owners from creating a Superfund site with overfill.

Engineroom systems are easy to service, and with a little maneuvering, skippers can access the outboard side of the engines. The engines will get plenty of air thanks to Delta-T de-misters and blowers.

A workbench is forward with a vice and stowage for spares. Access is through a doorway and steps to the cockpit. A second, emergency exit is at the forward end of the engineroom, exiting through the saloon sole.

Our test boat’s electrical system had a capacity of 1,500 amp hours divided into four banks. Symbol installed a 24-volt DC system in addition to the independent 12-volt bank that powers the electronics. The 4,000-watt Trace Inverter eliminates the need for a secondary generator and complements the 20kW Northern Lights. A second 80-amp charger keeps the 12-volt batteries charged. It would be tough to design a better electrical system for the offshore cruiser and island hopper.

The side decks are a respectable 18 inches wide, allowing for interior volume and a safe passageway. Bulwarks are 33 inches, and forward railings stand 42 inches high. I would add a second anchor roller forward for down island anchoring.

Sarin’s large-yacht expertise is evident on the flying bridge, which has twin helm seats, an L-shape settee and a helm with electronic surfaces that rival those aboard 100-foot-plus yachts. A Jenn-Air grill, a sink and another refrigerator are incorporated into a fiberglass unit abaft the radar arch.

Except for a few blemishes around the pilothouse windshield, the cherry interior on our test boat was also close to perfect. Symbol and Heart Marine worked with the owner to rearrange the saloon, where he wanted double sliding doors to the cockpit and the L-shape settee’s end facing those doors. Anyone plopping down on the settee with a good book can now enjoy a great view across the cockpit. The pilothouse area includes the galley and another settee with a table.

“My wife and I go for cruises and sometimes never use the saloon area”, Rule said. “While cruising, I can cook, keep an eye on the instruments while she is enjoying the bridge.”

The accommodations are what you would expect. The full-beam master stateroom is centrally located, with a private head, a large shower stall and plenty of ventilation. At maximum rpm, the decibel level only hit 74 in this area.

The amidships stateroom has twin berths, and a forward stateroom has an island berth. Guests in both will use the starboard head. A pump room is under the passageway.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the 62 is her price. At a base of $1,397,000, she is very competitive. You may not get a set of towels and a polo shirt, but you will get a well-built and superbly designed yacht that will hold her value.

Despite wars and sanctions, superyacht market continues recent growth.

The Phi has been detained in Canary Wharf since March 2022.

A superyacht is a status symbol and the ultimate pleasure boat. What ordinary people envisage doing on cruise ships, the super-rich do on their mega-yachts. Space and change of scenery have appealed to humans from time immemorial. However, with luxury yacht ownership requiring vast sums of disposable income, one would think that factors putting the global economy under pressure, such as inflation, Houthi terrorists and Somali pirates attacking ships in the Red Sea, sanctions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and before that, the COVID-19 pandemic, would slow down the demand for superyachts. Instead, despite severe disruptions, mainly because of the post-Ukraine 2022 Russian invasion sanctions, with billions sloshing around in the global economy, demand for these vessels has reached a high point, driven by changes in the tastes of the ultra-rich, innovative new uses for superyachts, and the number of buyers able to splurge on such craft.

Expensive Mega-Toys The unique uses of a superyacht are driven by the size and crew demands that separate it from a regular yacht. A superyacht is considered to be a pleasure vessel larger than 24m (80ft) with a full-time captain and crew. This is a costly outlay. There are added costs for not including maintenance, fuel, and expensive power plant, navigation, and communications gear.

The desire for seclusion and social distancing exhibited by the rich since the 2020 pandemic lends itself perfectly to these large, customizable ships that can be taken out to sea. A fully crewed ship is also needed to keep up with for new trend in exploration and environmental sailing, with boat owners venturing outside of the Mediterranean and Caribbean to experience more varied habitats. Other luxury sectors are taking note of these trends driving demand for superyachts, with hotel chains like The Four Seasons and The Ritz-Carlton aiming to offer bespoke superyacht experiences by 2025. By introducing this option, hotel chains are responding to the increased market demand for exploration while creating an experience that is more exclusive and private than a luxury cruise.

Demand has also been driven by an expanding number of prospective superyacht buyers as the number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals continues to increase globally. The growth is primarily driven by American buyers, with significant potential in regions like China and Southeast Asia, where ultra-rich buyers with disposable income are growing at a faster pace than they are in the West. This increase in wealthy customers in Southeast Asia, combined with miles of islands and coastlines, creates the conditions for a robust scene for superyachts in the area. The emergence of a new customer base wealthy enough to purchase super- and mega-yachts has made the industry resilient in the face of government sanctions against one of the industry’s largest consumer bases: Russian oligarchs.

Wwe raw results winners and grades as the rock and cm punk return, its contest emerging fashion designers find support at trieste.

Target: Russia Beginning in the early 2000s, Russian billionaires developed a taste for luxury superyachts, with some like Roman Abramovich (who is reported to own 16 vessels , including the Aquamarine, Eclipse, Garcon, Halo, Pelorus, Solaris and Sussurroo), Alexei Mordashov ( Lady M and Nord ) and Eduard Khudainatov ( Scheherazade , Amadea , Crescent ) placing orders for multiple vessels. According to Superyacht News, an industry publication, Russians account for a significant piece of the world's superyacht market. Their estimated share represents about 10% of superyachts exceeding 40 meters in length. The percentage of Russian ownership rises even further for mega-yachts exceeding 80 meters, where Russians hold the number two spot globally, owning 20% of these vessels. Research by Boat International estimates the contribution of Russian buyers to the global superyacht order book (valued between €35 and €40 billion) to be €3.9 billion.

The popularity of superyachts among Russia’s wealthy has caused them to become a focus of the sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Alongside traditional targets, including Russian financial holdings, banks, and energy, the assets of oligarchs are actively being seized and frozen by Western powers when possible through initiatives like the Russian Elites, Proxies, and Oligarchs (REPO) task force launched by the G7 and the U.S. Treasury’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Rewards (KARR) program.

The seizure of superyachts as assets will likely continue through the end of the invasion of Ukraine and possibly beyond. Recently, there have been increasing calls to sell or transfer these assets, allowing Ukraine to use or sell them to compensate for the damages caused by the war.

Eclipse | 162.5m Built in 2010 , Germany

Europe Suffers Even though the superyacht industry has a sizeable consumer base in Russia, the companies building and managing these yachts are primarily based in Western Europe. Many of these boats are built by shipbuilders such as Lürssen in Germany and Heesen Yachts and Oceanco in the Netherlands. This has led one of the shipyards, Damen, to sue the Dutch government over damages it claims it suffered from the EU sanctions. Additionally, companies like Burgess in the UK, Imperial Yachts and Edmiston in Monaco, and Moran Yacht & Ship in the US, in charge of servicing, managing, and brokering superyachts, are also concentrated in the West.

While Western shipyards and management companies may lose revenue because of sanctions and asset seizure of the Russian oligarchs, keeping the yachts frozen generates additional costs for the countries where they are being held. Some Western countries devised a solution to ease the burden on taxpayers, granting owners and their representatives special licenses to pay for the frozen vessels. Notably, France and Spain have allowed the billionaire owners of at least four mega-yachts to pay for their upkeep. In the UK, the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) has allowed the management company Burgess to pay for pre-sanction crew salaries of a yacht frozen in the UK.

Though the media associated superyachts with Russian oligarchs, this archetypal image of a superyacht owner may soon grow obsolete if the sanctions regime remains or even strengthens, causing multi-million dollar losses to the industry. Instead, growth in the sector is driven by a new class of rich being created in places like the United States and the Pacific Rim, seeking luxury lifestyles that can be provided by a superyacht. The superyacht industry will capitalize on the unprecedented wave of demand to increase its resilience in the stormy global security and economic environment.
