Moon Author's Review

Located on the eastern side of Kingston Harbor next to Norman Manley International Airport beside the Caribbean Maritime Institute, the  Royal Jamaica Yacht Club  holds regular regattas: Spring Regatta around the second week in February, RJYC Globe Fishing tournament in March, and Independence Regatta at the end of July or early August. Yachters arriving to Jamaica from overseas should clear customs in Port Royal before seeking a slip at the yacht club. You can also come directly to the club, which can contact customs and immigration. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 50 feet, while the visitors' dock can accommodate larger vessels. Fees are US$1.50 per foot for the first six days and US$1 thereafter; electricity, water, and fuel are also offered. Visitors are welcome to use the restaurant, bar, and pool. Patricia Yap-Chung is the secretary/manager. If you want to sign on as crew, make your interest known at the club and there's a good chance one of the boats will take you on. Yearly membership costs US$385.

Our Mission The Kingston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program exists to teach and promote water safety, the sport of sailing, and encourage skill development in a safe environment for young people in the Kingston community. The program emphasizes the enjoyment and lifetime benefit of active participation in sport.

We provide a safe and fun learning environment for young sailors, and:

  • Teach young people safe boat handling, seamanship, and sportsmanship;
  • Help young people learn to sail;
  • Help young people learn techniques of one-design racing and to help them fully develop their one-design racing skills; and
  • Promote youth sailing competition.

Our overall goals are simple: Safety, fun, and success.

KYC has a long tradition of great coaches, clear waters and an amazing location to spend a few weeks in the summer. From beginners at any age to advanced racers who have sailed the world’s most famous waterways, KYC offers day camps, clinics and off-season training.

KYC has been a leader in junior sailing nationally and internationally for more than 100 years. Thousands of sailors have had the opportunity to experience sailing through KYC. Sailors from KYC’s Junior Sailing Program have gone on to compete in collegiate, national, and world competitions; including America’s Cup, and Olympic competitions while developing a lifelong passion and love for the sport.

Our coaches are all Sail Canada certified and have undergone training in areas such as teaching, water safety, and first aid. Our coaches are passionate about sailing as well as passing their enjoyment and knowledge of the sport to youth sailors. They have a diverse background in sailing and while many have joined us from other clubs and places, many of our coaches have been through the KYC Junior Sailing & Race Teams programs themselves!

Instructor in Training Program

Curious what it’s like to be a sailing coach? Thinking about coaching in the future? KYC offers an Instructor in Training (IIT) program for members or graduates of the Race Team who are interested in becoming an instructor in the future. IITs commit to a full-time volunteer placement for 2 to 4 weeks in either July or August. IITs will assist coaches with daily coaching duties in a number of our programs.

Through this program, trainees will learn how to

  • Create CANSail lesson plans for a variety of age groups
  • Deliver classroom lessons
  • Provide on-water feedback
  • Set a variety of sailing courses on-water
  • Run KYC traditions such as Cedar Island Day and Theme Day

To apply for an IIT position please submit the following application, a cover letter and resume.

  • Personal Flotation Device (PFD):  must be Canadian Coast Guard or Transport Canada approved. (Available at Marine Outfitters , Canadian Tire, etc.)
  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing:  sailors should bring comfortable athletic clothing that can get wet, a towel, a change of clothes, a bathing suit, and a rain jacket (we go sailing rain or shine!)
  • Sun Protection: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses (the sun is stronger than ever while on the water!).
  • Refillable Water Bottle: sailors should bring a water bottle to make sure they stay hydrated at all times. Water breaks and refills are always available at camp.
  • Nut-free Lunch: sailors must provide their own nut-free and garbage-consious lunches
  • Closed-Toed Shoes:  Closed toed shoes must be worn at all times during camp. We recommend closed-toed sandals or running shoes on land, and sailing boots, water shoes, or quick-dry running shoes on water.
  • Combination Lock (optional):  lockers will be assigned on the first day of camp.
  • Camp hours are from 9:00am - 4:00pm, Monday to Friday. Drop-off and pick-up times are from 8:45am - 9:00am, and 4:00pm - 4:15pm. If your sailor is going to be absent or needs to be picked up early, please send us an email to [email protected] or give us a call at 613.547.2620 ahead of time.
  • Lunches must be nut-free . Please also consider packing lunches that do not create a lot of garbage.
  • Lifejackets or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times in/near the water or while sailing.
  • Listen to the coaches at all times (this includes safety instructions from other KYC coaches, not just your own). It is important that sailors do not sail away from the dock without coach permission or leave the group without notice.
  • Treat other sailors and coaches with respect at all times. Swearing, bullying, and violence of any kind will not be tolerated.
  • Treat the KYC equipment and grounds with respect.
  • Kingston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is a smoke, non-prescribed drug and alcohol free environment. Possession or use of these substances will result in serious consequences and be grounds for immediate expulsion from the KYC Junior Sailing Program

Please note: The program WILL RUN on Canada Day and August long weekend.

Welcome to the Collins Bay Yacht Club

Our club is a vibrant association of boat owners operating from the Collins Bay Marina and we offer a full round of activities for all boating enthusiasts in a setting which provides easy access to both Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands. Collins Bay is a short 30 minute sail just west of the venue for the 1976 Olympic sailing courses and provides some of the best fresh-water sailing in Canada. In 2012 we successfully hosted the Eastern Yachting Circuit Regatta

Collins Bay Yacht Club has a weekly Thursday night club race program and several challenging distance races each season as well as an active cruising schedule of both the weekend type and a week-long cruise each year. Reciprocity with many other clubs provides members with destination sailing and ensures a steady stream of fellow boaters to the area each year.

There is a full social calendar to promote fellowship amongst the members which includes several off-season events as well as many during the boating season.

The club operates a sailing school for both youth and adults while also providing summer employment for Sail Canada qualified instructors.

We hope you will consider membership in our club, particularly if you are based in Collins Bay Marina. When cruising the area from other clubs, please pay us a visit. Check out our Calendar of Events for the current year and you will see that our schedule is packed with activities for every type of boater.

Explore The Island Guide

Subscribe to e-newsletter, book your trip, set your sights and sails for jamaica.

Jamaica is the third largest of the Caribbean islands, and the largest English-speaking island in the region. Although our island is considered “small” by some standards – 4,244 square miles (10,991sq km) in size – there are numerous activities that visitors can enjoy once you get into port.

Jamaica is chiefly a limestone island; the topography cruisers are often surprised about is the hills which almost touch the white-sand beaches. The island’s tropical climate is cooled by the north-east trade winds. Experienced navigators indicate that the island’s waters are fairly deep and can accommodate large vessels. The northern coast is the preferred point of entry as the southern coast has more reefs and requires careful attention.

The island’s waters and cays are patrolled by the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard. Their grey vessels will have the appropriate white markings and the Jamaican flag is flown. The Coast Guard advises that entry to the island be made at Kingston, Montego Bay, or Port Antonio where immigration, customs and quarantine services are available. All arriving vessels and crew are expected to complete these inspections before moving to other parts of, or landing on the island.

Customs:  Jamaica Customs requires that each vessel provides a full crew list and documents relating to the vessel’s registration and cargo. A Customs Officer will board the vessel for inspection and indicate when pratique (clearance) has been granted.

Immigration:  The Passport Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) will require the crew list and passports (with proof of visas where applicable) for each vessel. The Immigration Officer will indicate the period of stay for which each traveler is allowed. Extensions of stay may be sought through PICA.

The Port Authority The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) manages the island’s ports as well as the lighthouses and beacons.  The PAJ through its Cruise & Marina division maintains the port infrastructure and assists cruise ships and yachts with the use of the facilities.

Ports & Marinas The island of Jamaica is blessed with several deep-water ports, which provide the mariner with access to the island’s north and south coasts. Mariners are advised to enter at the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club in Kingston, The Montego Bay Yacht Club in Montego Bay, or the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio. At these docks, immigration and customs services, adequate facilities for mooring/docking, refueling and supplies, as well as security are in place, or are easily arranged. Some of these ports have repair facilities with lifts, and can make arrangements for specialized marine services as needed.

Royal Jamaica Yacht Club, Kingston  The Port of Kingston boasts the 7th largest natural harbor in the world and is home to the island’s largest port facilities as well as being one of the main transshipment points in the Caribbean region. The Royal Jamaica Yacht Club has been in existence for over a century. It received its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1889. Located in Kingston, it is the marina of choice on Jamaica’s southern coast, particularly for pleasure boats arriving from South America and the wider Caribbean. The marina can accommodate boats up to 50ft. in length.

Kingston is the cultural capital of the island; it is home to Jamaica’s essence – music, entertainment, academia, business and gastronomy. The city is a bevy of restaurants and cafés, music studios and theatres, with galleries and museums sprinkled between. Be sure to check out a local reggae show; visit Port Royal, Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum, Hope Gardens and other great sites in and around Kingston. Contact: Royal Jamaica Yacht Club:  Palisadoes Park, Kingston Tel: (876) 924-8685, (876) 924-8686 Email: [email protected] Website:   http://www.rjyc.org.jm/home.aspx

Montego Bay Yacht Club Montego Bay is well known for its white sand beaches, extensive golf courses, tours and activities appealing to visitors, and is dotted by several resorts and hotels. The “tourism hub” of the island, Montego Bay is called the centerpiece of Jamaica.  Montego Bay’s expansive, award-winning port allows for easy access to the many attractions and activities of the resort area. The Montego Bay Yacht Club is nestled to the western end of the Port of Montego Bay, and is in close proximity. A variety of attractions and tours are within easy reach of the Montego Bay Yacht Club including Rose Hall Great House, Croydon in the Mountains, Hilton High Day Tour, Mountain Valley Rafting and Doctors Cave Beach.  Contact: Montego Bay Yacht Club: Tel: (876) 979-8038 Website: http://www.mobayyachtclub.com/

Errol Flynn Marina, Port Antonio The Port of Port Antonio is known for its picturesque twin harbours. It is home to three docks – the Errol Flynn Marina, the Old Marina and Bowden Wharf. The Old Marina and Bowden Wharf formed the hub from which the area’s green gold – bananas – was shipped. Bowden Wharf is the starting point for the region’s longest running sport-fishing event – the Port Antonio Marlin Tournament. The Errol Flynn Marina –the island’s newest port – named after the swashbuckling actor, welcomes boutique cruise vessels and yachts.

Port Antonio is the smallest of the major ports and ideal for yachts. The full-service port sports landscaped gardens and a promenade with views of the lush countryside and the majestic Blue Mountains. The Errol Flynn Marina is the main landing facility for visiting vessels to the port of Port Antonio. From this port it is easy to go Rafting on the Rio Grande, explore Somerset Falls, Charles Town Maroon Village and Reach Falls.

Port Location:     East Harbour: 18°10’50”N, 76°26’50”W,  West Harbour: 18°11’N, 76°27’20”W.
