First Officer / Chief Mate

About the first officer / chief mate.

The first officer onboard a yacht is required to have in depth knowledge of all bridge, navigation and deck procedures as well as the ability to teach the deck crew new repair and maintenance skills. This person will also have a thorough understanding of safety procedures as well as managerial skills, strong leadership of and communication with the crew. The first officer is able to support the captain in every aspect of yacht management. This role necessitates at least five years of experience including positions as the first officer or the captain of a smaller vessel and a minimum license of OOW unlimited.

• Assisting captain with administrative and safety duties
• Management of deck crew and maintaining crew discipline
• Arrange regular safety drills
• Setting watch schedules
• Maintenance and deck inventory and deck equipment
• Stowage of yacht for sea
• Adhering to deck budget
• Continued education and licensing test

• Ability to stand in for captain in his absence
• Ability to delegate, effective communicator, organized, diplomatic and versatile
• Boat handling, watch keeping and navigational skills
• Excellent ISM and ISPS knowledge and practices
• Extensive maintenance knowledge and skills; cleaning, rust/corrosion, painting, varnishing, rope splicing, fiberglass, carpentry, outboard motors and maintenance product knowledge
• Basic engineering knowledge
• Advanced knowledge of all water sports
• Computer skills

Become a Mate on a Luxury Yacht

If you're considering becoming a mate on a yacht then you will need to work up to this position. It is not one you can land without first having some experience as well as meeting specific requirements. There are three levels of mate or officer, first mate or officer, second mate or officer, and third mate or officer. Each has its own set of requirements that you will need to fulfill. These are defined by the U.S. Coast Guard or Maritime Coast Guard Agency of the U.K. Once you've worked your way up to the level of mate, you perform work directly for the captain and supervise other crew members.

Here are some of the basic responsibilities of all levels of mates on a yacht:

• Supervise deck and engineering crew members.
• Create and execute required drills for crew members.
• Ensure that all equipment onboard the ship is being properly maintained and is in working order.
• Provide training to passengers on the equipment that they will use while onboard.
• Stand in for the captain, performing all of the captain's duties, as needed.
• Act as host to the passengers and answer their questions.
• Supervise docking and anchoring operations.

As a mate you are in a position of authority and responsibility. Since the yacht crew members may not feel comfortable going to the captain when they have a problem, you may find that you deal with the crew members and their problems more often than the captain. Qualifications Required for Yacht Mates

The first mate or other mates will also need to have extensive knowledge of yachting rules and regulations, navigational methods, and safety requirements. It is usually the first mate who is responsible for ensuring that the ship meets all safety regulations and is adhering to them.

The owner eats lunch onboard only when underway moving from A to B otherwisethey are off for lunch anddinner. The exception is the child (7yo) who stays behind most of the time for dinner with the crew. They do have breakfast onboard. It's basic, same with their lunch.

Early 60's 1 child 7 years of age and a daughter late 30's. Most of the time just the 3 of them on board, Boss, wife and child.

The Daughter- Comes during the summer,sometimes just a weekend and sometimes a couple times during our season. The boat is used as a floating Hotel. Her family includes Husband, 3 children, age 7, and theother two are younger.

Last summer we were very quiet, with minimal use compared to the past. Their normal is the 1st of July through labor day (Sept 5/6th).

It was just primarily the 3 onboard and one weekend we had the daughter and her family. They were not there for a total of 3 weeks which gave the crew good downtime to explore.

Salary based on experience.
