What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Cape Town

Choosing the right vessel for your sailing adventure in Cape Town is an essential part of the planning process, and Yachting.Rent is here to help you make the best choice. We offer a range of options, including sailing boats and catamarans, each with their own unique features and advantages.

Sailing boats are an excellent choice for those who desire a traditional sailing experience. These vessels offer a smooth ride, even in choppy waters, making them ideal for longer voyages along the Cape’s breathtaking coastline. Whether you’re an experienced sailor wishing to take the helm yourself, or prefer the services of our skilled skippers, a sailing boat promises a sense of adventure and connection to the sea. The yachts in our fleet range from compact and sporty vessels, perfect for couples or small groups, to larger, luxury models, well-suited for family charters or corporate events.

On the other hand, catamarans are gaining popularity for their stability, spaciousness, and speed. With twin hulls providing excellent balance, catamarans ensure a comfortable and stable trip, making them particularly suitable for families with children or those prone to seasickness. The larger deck space and cabins in a catamaran allow for maximum comfort and relaxation, with plenty of room for sunbathing, dining, or simply enjoying the stunning views of Cape Town’s coastline. Catamarans also have a shallow draft, making them perfect for exploring hidden coves and mooring in shallow bays, where other boats may not be able to venture.

No matter the vessel you choose, safety is our top priority. All our sailing boats and catamarans are fully equipped with safety gear and navigational equipment, meeting international safety standards. They also come with all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable journey, from well-equipped galleys to spacious lounging areas.

In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat or a catamaran ultimately depends on your personal preference, the size of your group, and the kind of sailing experience you wish to have. Our team at Yachting.Rent is committed to assisting you in making the best choice for your dream sailing adventure in Cape Town.

Angela Collins Yachts

Yacht brokerage based in cape town.

I started Angela Collins Yachts in 2000, in Durban, as a brokerage, selling pre-owned yachts and eventualy represented boat building factories like Maxim Catamarans, Fast Yachts and even represented an international brand, Feretti Yachts in South Africa.

This all led me to start my own  boat building factory and commisioned yacht designer Angelo Lavranos, who designed the Blue Bay 37 production monohull for me, which we built from plans, to plug to moulds to boats. Shortly after I was offered the moulds of the  Parlay 40ft Catamaran, a Simonis Voogd design and started production on them also.

It was at this stage that my husband Mark joind me in the business to assist managing and over seeing the factory.

Every year we would travel to the USA to attend the two major boat shows, the Miami Boat Show and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show to represent our boats, with great success.

We are both sailors and have our coastal skippers tickets and have been married for 44 years.

We are both very familiar with all aspects of the yachting industry.

Angela Collins Yachts specialises in marketing pre-owned yachts of all sizes, from small day sailer, medium to large luxury ocean cruisers, both in monohull and catamarans and are able to offer you our best advice no matter if you are a first time buyer with no sailing experience or a very capable sailor.Once again we will be building yachts, having bought the Tosca 39 moulds and having recieved the licencing from Lavranos the designer, even though the Tosca is a design from the 80s it is still a very popular cruising yacht, with centre cockpit and aft cabin. They are a strong safe sailing yachts, ideal for families and cruising couples – over 40 were originaly made and are still sailing all over the world.

We understand the dreams of owning a yacht, so we love to help people make their dreams a reality.

We are here to help and we are available seven days a week  –  We believe adventure starts with a dream, so let us make your dreams a reality.

We will give you our personal attention. You will find us knowledgeable, professional and friendly to work with.we will assist and guide you through all the nessesary steps and legalities to owning your boat – assistance with surveys, test sails and deliveries if required.

We look forward to assisting you

Warm regards

EASY EFFORTLESS E-SAILING

SAIL best boats nominee.png

The first all-electric pocket catamaran, designed with comfort as a top priority.

Watch more videos.

Our new HopYacht 30 catamaran makes sailing easy and effortless, by simplifying the things that make traditional yachts feel like hard work.

Designed specifically for couples or families with young children the HopYacht 30 is easy to sail short-handed. With the stability of a catamaran, anxious newcomers to sailing will quickly feel at home, and that means you can  relax!

Perfect for hopping from bay to bay, coastal or short island hops and with a mast lowering system perfect for exploring inland waterways . But why stop there? To explore another region of the world, the HopYacht 30 has demountable hulls and will fit into two standard 40' containers. Assembly at your new destination is straightforward. With the same beam as a typical 36'- 40' monohull,  you'll have more options to secure a berth in busy marinas and of course mooring fees will be much lower than a typical wide beam catamaran!

HopYacht 30 aerial 8.jpeg

Easy to sail.

With just a single sail to manage, HopYacht lives up to the promise of effortless sailing.  The genoa sheets are led to one winch at the helm station, making sailing single-handed a breeze. Positioning the mast further aft optimises the sail area and significantly improves upwind performance.  An asymmetric cruising spinnaker can be added as an option.

HopYacht icon on white_edited.jpg

Effortless .

The  cockpit,  saloon  and forward cabin areas are all on the same level with full standing headroom throughout, eliminating the hassle and hazard of climbing up and down  companionway steps.

One level  also  introduces more light into the interior with large wrap around windows. HopYacht's layout creates  a natural flow of air throughout, keeping you  naturally  cool, without the need for  air-conditioning.

E-sailing .

Equipped with electric sail drives plus   electric  water heating and cooking, fossil fuel pollution is  eliminated. Th ere's also no noise  pollution. With  whisper quiet electric motors,  re-charged by four  solar panels,  HopYacht is truly eco-sensitive.

Unlike yachts with d iesel engines, motor sailing now becomes a real joy. We call this E-Sailing! A great way to enjoy m ore  efficient sailing, especially when you need to beat the tide or get home before dark. A bit like riding an E-Bike!

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 21.11.57.png

Relaxation super-yacht style.

Our design team have extensive experience creating interiors for larger luxury catamarans and have borrowed a number of ideas to enhance the overall  comfort of our HopYacht. A good example is the  wrap-around cockpit seating which is  fully upho lstered and converts into a day bed with room for two!

Screen Shot 2021-09-10 at 09_edited_edited.jpg

A proper island bed.

Standard yacht berths can feel a little like you are on a camping holiday! The  forward cabin features a proper walk-around queen sized bed (1.92m x 1.53m)  .

Screen Shot 2021-09-10 at 09_edited_edited.jpg

Sunbathing can be thirsty work!

If you take  relaxation  seriously, you'll love the trampoline area at the bow. No more tossing a coin to see who will fetch the refreshments, because built into the aft section of the anchor locker is a cooler box with drink holders.

Screen Shot 2022-01-02 at 18_edited.jpg

Galley integrated into the cockpit area.

For relaxed holiday style sailing, having the galley in the under-cover cockpit area  makes a huge amount of sense. The cook is able to socialise and enjoy the view while cooking. In warm weather, it's much cooler and the heat (and smell) from cooking isn't trapped inside the saloon.

Fatal fishing trip in Bantry Bay, Cape Town

Two well-known Cape Town fishermen drowned in a fatal fishing trip after their boat capsized in Bantry Bay.

One survivor as rescue teams act swiftly

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), three men embarked on the fishing trip. Two drowned and one, who was transported to a hospital, survived.

The fatal fishing trip took place on the afternoon of 13 June. Eyewitnesses reported a capsized boat at the back breakers surf zone, between Saunders Rocks and Queens Beach, in Bantry Bay. Multiple emergency services responded, e.g. NSRI Table Bay, NSRI Bakoven, and the CoCT (City of Cape Town) water rescue network. The NSRI launched their Table Bay rescue craft Spirit of Day . EMS Metro Control activated the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter, accompanied by an EMS Metro rescue diver.

What happened in the fatal fishing trip?

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the three men from Cape Town’s northern suburbs , are well-known in the fishing, boating, and maritime communities. He stated that it appeared that they may have been fishing offshore of Bantry Bay when a wave capsized their boat.

NSRI rescue swimmers arrived on the scene first at Bantry Bay and entered the water. They found two men – one in his 20s and another in his 60s.

They took the younger man to shore where paramedics treated him for hypothermia and non-fatal drowning symptoms. Thereafter, an ambulance transported him to a hospital . He is recovering and in a stable condition.

The second man was unresponsive. Although paramedics used CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on him, it was unsuccessful. He was declared deceased.

Search for missing fisherman

The third man was missing at the time. Skymed was conducting the aerial search and the NSRI rescue craft returned to the scene at Bantry Bay to assist. The NSRI rescue swimmers continued to search in the water, and emergency services members conducted shoreline searches. They found the missing man, who was unresponsive, in the surf zone. After taking the man to shore, paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, but unfortunately declared him deceased. He was also in his 60s.

Fatal fishing trip’s boat washed ashore

Following the incident at Bantry Bay, the boat washed ashore among rocks near Queens Beach. Sea Point Police patrol officers investigated the boat and the police has consequently opened an inquest docket.

The bodies of the two deceased men involved in the fatal fishing trip at Bantry Bay, were taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services in the meantime.

NSRI commended the eyewitnesses that raised the alarm and the many public bystanders who aided the rescuers at Queens Beach and at Three Anchor Bay during this tragic, sad incident at Bantry Bay.

Two women talk in a room, while one has her hair braided in anticipation of a celebration. They are occupants in the former Helen Bowden Nurses Home, an abandoned building near the South African city’s elite Waterfront precinct. The right half of the frame looks through the open window over the sea, where a luxury yacht cruises past.

“How can they ever think we can live next to the Waterfront?” asks a character wryly, looking over a view shared by residents of the hugely expensive apartments a few hundred metres up the road.

The shot is deliberate, just one example of how the filmmakers manage to balance on-the-spot action with careful composition to draw attention to the everyday experiences of the city’s poor.

Journalists Miki Redelinghuys and Pearlie Joubert spent six years following the activist group Reclaim the City to produce their documentary. The result is a hard-hitting and heartbreaking film that illuminates unsparingly how inequality in South Africa persists 30 years after democracy .

Mother City is a tonic to the postcard-pretty TV series set in Cape Town that routinely grace streaming platforms, part of my research into Cape Town’s screen identities.

The backstory

The story follows the Reclaim the City campaign, supported by advocacy group Ndifuna Ukwazi . Their fight is against the spatial segregation they experience in Cape Town which is, in their view, perpetuated by the city and the province’s leadership. Activist and community leader Nkosikhona Swartbooi is the fulcrum for much of the action and also narrates several scenes.

Cape Town has always been a divided city. Its spatial development is the product of centuries of colonial, apartheid and, more recently, neoliberal disfigurement. Apartheid practices, in particular, legalised the eviction and relocation of Black and Coloured people from their homes in Cape Town’s world famous city centre beneath Table Mountain to the dusty outskirts of the city.

As a result, property in town is exclusive and zealously guarded, locking out the poor who work in the city centre. Reclaim the City fights for equality and the spatial justice promised by the country’s democratic leaders.

The film opens with a disruption of an address by Helen Zille (then premier of the Western Cape province). The activists are protesting the sale of the old Tafelberg school site in Sea Point to private developers. They argue that there is an urgent need for housing for working class people otherwise forced to travel long distances every day to get to work. “What is so difficult about accommodating us inside the city?” asks one woman during her eviction from a flat in Sea Point.

City and provincial officials from the ruling Democratic Alliance are the antagonists, accused of derailing the potential for low-cost housing and, worse, selling land cheaply to private developers.

And so the strategy of occupying vacant properties owned by the city and the provincial government begins while legal actions and, sometimes, confrontations with private security firms play out.

The narrative is, through the subject matter, open-ended. Reclaim the City’s struggles inside and outside the courts continue.

Central to the film’s tension is a statement by then mayoral committee member for urban settlements, Brett Herron : “What successive governments have done under this huge pressure of delivering high numbers of housing is to focus on numbers at the expense of location.”

Reclaim the City shows how vacant land in prime areas becomes parking lots for corporates. Buildings remain unused while provision for housing continues to occur on the city periphery.

The directors do well to keep the film’s momentum going while intertwining multiple narrative strands: occupations at different sites, legal challenges and protest actions against the authorities’ intransigence, the impact of Covid-19 on the campaign and particularly on homeless people. There are also several personal narratives, particularly Nkosikhona’s as he deals with family tragedy in the midst of his activist work during the pandemic.

A short episode also shows members of Reclaim the City in Barcelona, Spain as they support reformist mayor Ada Colau and meet activists from other parts of the world. Colau campaigned on the issue of the housing crisis and against evictions in the city. It would have been interesting to see how successful the strategies have been in Barcelona to combat gentrification and the housing of the city’s poor, but the narrative returns to Cape Town as the activists’ multi-pronged occupations gather steam.

Is it worth watching?

While the approach by the filmmakers is largely informative, there are smart uses of location, sound and editing, for example, a cut away from the action to the windblown Wolwerivier settlement that is the city’s preferred relocation site for evictees. Or, in another scene, a move from the interior of a vast, abandoned public building to a property development conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The film’s pulsing score lends some scenes (like the occupation of Woodstock Hospital) the mood of a thriller.

The film covers a lot of ground and the impact of Covid-19 sends it off in a new direction as battles over land are fought on the Cape Flats , an area on the outskirts of the city housing mostly coloured and black people. The footage here evokes memories of violent forced removals under apartheid.

Though brutal and distressing in places, Mother City is not only a document about occupation and protest, but also reveals the emergence of communities within these spaces that celebrate religious festivals, anniversaries, memorials and residents’ birthdays.

The film makes for sobering viewing. It asks urgently whether this beautiful and unique city can be warm and embracing, a mother, to all its residents.

Mother City can be seen in South Africa at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival on 20 and 22 June.
