It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for mahi-mahi off the beach in South Florida or campaigning a pro-level crew from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back pursuing billfish during tournament season. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling, and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits fresh; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch stowed and cold; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, sometimes north of 40-plus knots. Sportfish yachts are also known for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and en suite staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina falls in the middle of the New Bern, North Carolina, boatbuilder’s three-model GT lineup, which also includes a GT59 and GT70 . This sportfish yacht has a solid-fiberglass hull bottom built for blue-water duty and comes with a variety of diesel engine options, which starts with twin 1,622 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels.

Like all Hatteras GT models, the GT65 has notable bow flare to beat back tempestuous seas as well as a high freeboard to keep decks dry in the slop. The Hatteras GT65 also represent a design evolution for the series with a “stepped-back flybridge” an element found on in earlier Hatteras models, as well as a new window treatment and hull-side vents. With yacht-level luxury on the inside and a fishing-mission design on the outside, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 is a formidable sportfish boat.

Cruise speed: 36 knots at 80 percent engine load. (Base powerplants are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels.) For the traveling tournament crew, the Viking 64C has four staterooms, including three en suite guest staterooms, plus a crew cabin with upper and lower bunks.

Royal Huisman Project 406

A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck, Royal Huisman’s Project 406 is. The interior and exterior design of Project 406 is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack . Vripack calls the vessel a “sportfisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight.

Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines for Project 406. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.

Rybovich 94

Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat , designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels . 

The owner of II Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside.  “Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.”

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

The Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish is the builder’s entry point to its diesel-propelled sportfish boats. An owner-operator-size angling platform, the 38 Open is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, which gives the sportfish boat 36-knot speed. Notable angling features on board the 38 Open include a 109-swqure-foot cockpit, complete with a mezzanine seating flanking the centerline stairs to the bridge deck as well as a laminated backing plate foe either a fighting chair or a rocket launcher. For overnight canyon trips, there is a forepeak stateroom with a double bunk as well as a single above it. Additionally, the salon’s sofa converts to a berth for guests or crew. The galley is outfitted with Corian countertops, two-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven and drawer-style refrigerators and freezers. Some options include a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics , both are Viking Yachts’ subsidiaries.

Bertram 61 Convertible

Bertram’s 61 Convertible leads the builder’s offshore series, which also includes a 35 Convertible and the express-style 50 Sport . Like its 50 Sport sistership, the 61 Convertible has a stepped sheerline, a nod to the legendary boatbuilder’s earlier designs. It also creates an instantly recognizable profile. The 61 Convertible is ready to run out of the box thanks to its twin 1,925 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels. Top hop is 44 knots.

When it comes to chasing fish, the 61 Convertible has 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell is accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard makes bringing in that bigeye on board a breeze. (Fish not included.) The accommodations layout belowdecks includes three staterooms. There is a full-beam master stateroom amidships.

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

The Hatteras Yachts GT45X express sports twin 1,150-horsepower Cat C18 ACERT diesel engines that deliver 40-plus-knot speeds. During our sea trial, the GT45X showcased remarkable handling, gracefully leaning into turns without any loss of power from the props. Hatteras has equipped the GT45X with a custom-engineered, sound-deadening system. This feature reduces noise and vibration, ensuring a relatively quiet ride for all aboard. Inside, the yacht has a luxe sensibility with its wood sole, sumptuous leather seating, a fully equipped galley and a spacious forward stateroom. On deck, there are two comfortable helm seats, an undercounter fridge, an ice maker, an inviting L-shaped settee and a table, creating the perfect entertainment area for relaxing after a successful day of fishing. The integrated hardtop enhances visibility with its one-piece windshield and large side windows, offering optimal views of the surrounding waters. To adapt to changing weather conditions, simply install clear curtains across the bridge deck aft, transforming the GT45X into an all-season sport-fisherman. Personalization is key with Hatteras Yachts, and the GT45X offers a variety of optional features. Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

The Huckins 45 Sportfisherman starts with the Florida boatbuilder’s patented Quadraconic hull . The Huckins’ Quadraconic name derives from four conical projections that make up the bottom surface shape. The sport-fisher has a deep forefoot and some measurable flare above the waterline for good buoyancy and dry running. A single chine rises from the waterline and then descends quickly to optimize spray control. The deep-V shape forward warps to a flat running surface far aft for efficient planing and excellent roll resistance.

Power is twin 480 hp Cummins diesels, which give this sportfish boat an easy 28-knot cruise. Top speed is 35 knots, so a 30-knot cruise is easily an option. The owner of the 45 Sportfisherman we got aboard is an avid stand-up angler and set up his boat with three flush-deck insulated fish boxes with macerators, a Dometic ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, six gunwale rod holders, saltwater and freshwater washdowns, and a four-rod rocket launcher in lieu of a fighting chair.

Jarrett Bay 46

Originally named Persistence, this Jarrett Bay 46 was built for fishing enthusiast and NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. When creating his fully custom sportfish boat, Burton noted that his vessel would be both a fishing boat and a family boat. Fishing features include an in-transom fish box, a sailfish pod, insulated fish boxes and a tuna door (sans bridge) in the cockpit. Jarrett Bay installed three rod holders in each gunwale and six more across the flybridge rail, plenty of rod room for setting up a trolling spread. With upper and lower helm stations (the latter being an owner request), the Jarrett Bay 46 also gives the skipper options if the weather goes south. The Jarrett Bay 46 has ZF pod drives with underwater exhaust paired to twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels. At a comfortable 2,000-rpm cruise, this sport-fisher makes about 26 knots while those diesels consume 41 gallons per hour. Dial it up to a top-end speed of 35 knots and consumption goes up to 58.3 gph.

Viking Yachts 92

The Viking Yachts 92 is the largest sport-fisher the New Gretna, New Jersey-based boatbuilder has ever constructed. Offered with an open- or enclosed-bridge setup, the hefty sportfish boat (displacing around 205,000 pounds) hits 37-knots-plus when powered with optional 2,600 hp MTU diesels. At 2,100 rpm, this battlewagon cruises easily at 31 knots at 78 percent engine load. Dial it back to 28 knots, and engine load is a mere 70 percent. The 92-footer is also agile thanks to the Viking Independent Programmable Electrohydraulic Rudder (VIPER) steering system, a fly-by-wire setup that lets the helmsman control each rudder individually.

From an angling perspective, the 92 has 55-foot Rupp outriggers , fish stowage large enough for a wolf pack of bigeye tuna, space for a season’s worth of baits, secured gaff stowage and enough tackle drawers to handle all the lures and terminal gear an owner could ever buy. The Viking 92 also has six staterooms to accommodate owners, guests and crew for tournament season and long-haul adventure angling.

Like some of the other names on this list, Merritt is an iconic Pompano Beach, Florida-based, custom sportfish builder with a current model lineup that includes 66-, 72- and 86-foot convertible designs. The Merritt 72 is a model that has stood the test of time, and one that owners flock to year in and year out, for its fishability, seakindly nature and the ability to tailor the layout to an owner’s angling needs.

Because these boats are custom-built, the specifics can change from one 72 to another, but 30-knot cruise speeds and nearly 40-knot top-end speeds are common in all 72s, as are massive cockpits for fighting Hemingway-worthy marlin, stout construction for chasing those fish in the blue water and superyacht-level finishes inside and outside.

The entry point into Bertram’s three-model Offshore Series⎯spanning from 35 to 61 feet length overall⎯the Bertram 35 blends a familiar profile with modern power and technology to create a 36-knot angling juggernaut. This owner-operator-sized, Michael Peters -penned, flybridge sport-fisher starts with a wave-slicing, deep-V hull form with 22 degrees transom deadrise. The form is supported by a solid fiberglass hull bottom with cored hull sides for added strength without added weight.

The 35 has a 126-square-foot cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic. Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look. Inside, the salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. Power is twin 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels matched to ZF drives. At a comfortable 27.5-knot cruise at just 68 percent engine load, the Bertram 35 has a 253-nautical-mile range, making it easily canyon-capable.

Viking Yachts 54 Open

Many anglers like open- or express-style sportfish designs as they enable the captain and crew to keep in close proximity, and the Viking 54 Open , which also is offered in a Sport Coupe or Sport Tower, does just that. The 54 Open’s bridge deck has a Palm Beach-style helm on centerline, flanked by a double-wide companion seat to port and a single seat to starboard. Abaft the helm and to port is U-shaped seating with a walnut table, creating a respite from the sun on tournament day while still allowing the crew to keep an eye on the spread via the open after bulkhead. Across from that seating is an L-shaped settee.

With a focus on fishing, the 54 Open has 154 square feet of cockpit real estate. Two sets of mezzanine seats offer perches for the crew to watch the spread. Other fishing-friendly features include a transom livewell, an in-deck fish box to starboard (with an optional livewell tub), an insulated in-deck box to port, a deck plate for mounting a rocket launcher or fighting chair, cooler stowage in the mezzanine steps (a bait freezer in the steps is optional), and a tuna door. Power is either twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN diesels. For owners who prefer a three-sided fiberglass enclosure to a clear-plastic setup—but still want an open after bulkhead—Viking offers the 54 in the Sport Tower version. The 54 Sport Coupe model closes the after bulkhead, completely protecting the bridge deck from the elements.

Ease of use and technical achievement aboard the Canyon 456 start with Grady’s exclusive Sea Command CenterTM–aesthetically striking, exceptionally comfortable, and offering an amazing assembly of technology. The center’s ultra-comfortable forward-facing seating features four premium individual electronically adjustable seats, each replete with rich upholstery and stainless supports for the armrests. A fold down footrest for each adds even more comfort. The starboard center seat accommodates the captain, who has an easy reach to the ergonomically arranged array of systems, electronics, and controls at the helm. CZone® digital switching technology enables one-touch control of on-board systems including power, electrical, lighting, heat and air conditioning–even the seacocks. A software application allows remote command of these functions from your phone! Grady’s sea chest raw water reservoir allows remote electronic control for livewells, generator, air conditioning, washdowns, and more. The helm also holds the Fusion Signature Series stereo system controls for the bow and T-top speakers. A separate Fusion Signature unit is located in the console cabin.

The 456 is equipped with a Seakeeper® gyro stabilizer to give an added element of control in the most extreme sea conditions. The Yamaha Helm Master® system with Set PointTM is also standard, further providing enhanced performance. The revolutionary Zipwake® dynamic auto-leveling trim control system also assures maximum capability. This Canyon packs a variable speed bow thruster standard as well. The entire helm area is covered by a stylish, sophisticated, enclosed AV2 T-topTM with an integrated wraparound windshield for maximum visibility and protection. Electronic side windows and a large overhead hatch allow plenty of fresh air when the heating or air conditioning system is not needed. This top includes a built-in SureShade® electronically retractable cockpit shade and LED spreader lights forward and aft. Top-of-the-line deluxe GEMLUX® carbon fiber outriggers are available. The underneath of the top features digital lighting and a huge netted storage area–a Grady specialty. Ten rod holders here are fishing-ready, and four deluxe stereo speakers provide the soundtrack to any adventure. For extra convenience, this Canyon comes equipped with a remote-controlled anchor light on the T-top, making the transition from day to night as simple as a press of a button. Safety handrails are seamlessly built-in, just where you need them.

Few if any luxury sportfish builders can boast of a better “business end” of the cockpit than the engineers at Grady-White. The extra beam on this Canyon allows the integration of the Sea Command Center’s amazing aft-facing fishing station, with dedicated air conditioning/heating vents and seating for three in high, dry, and exceedingly comfortable seats. The middle seat sports a flip-up bolster that serves as a lean bar. Tackle storage is truly spacious, with room for six tackle boxes plus two additional gear drawers that slide from under the bolstered seating. Portside there is a sink with an adjustable pull-out faucet hose with a spray nozzle. The starboard side has an outdoor galley featuring a refrigerator and grill for those on-board celebrations of fresh-caught seafood, or just for snacks and hors d’oeuvres.

Aft port and starboard cockpit side doors are positioned perfectly for landing fish or boarding. Another useful feature is the hot and cold freshwater shower mounted near the starboard side door, ready for a quick rinse after a swim or dive, or to wash off your rods after a catch. There is handy storage for six rods under the aft gunwales and, just forward, additional lockable storage for four more. Twin livewells are located in the transom area port and starboard, adjacent to the expansive aft refrigerated/freezer fish box. This aft box comes with two partitions so it can be sectioned in three sizes, to adjust for your catch of the day. On the interior transom wall is a thoughtfully designed area to mount an up to 24″ electronic display screen so the aft facing crew can see navigation direction, fish sounder, and the exact position of the last strike—all the information a fish fighter needs. The aft transom itself includes a brand new high volume overboard draining scupper system, plus a Glendenning 35-foot, 50 amp motorized retractable shore power cord. The Canyon 456 is powered by quad Yamaha outboard engines and boasts the Reverso® pre-programmed engine flushing system to keep them running perfectly. This Grady shines at night with water level LED lights.

Access to the expansive console cabin is via a sliding door with screen, located just forward of the portside bridge seat. To port of the integrated cabin steps is a cedar-lined closet. Large side windows provide ample ambient light to fill the interior space. A dazzling combination of exotic wood, superb cabinetry, luxurious fabrics, and Corian® countertops greet the eye. Below the portside countertop is a full-size microwave drawer and a six-bottle wine cooler for entertaining. A stainless steel sink and a cooktop are located amidships on the starboard counter, with a refrigerator drawer below. Lighted glass shelves are above the counters on each side. Forward center, there’s an electronically controlled solid sapele wood dining table inlaid with teak and brushed aluminum accents, seating up to four. Simply lower the table for a forward berth that sleeps two comfortably. Overhead, the screened hatch offers plenty of fresh air and ocean breezes on demand. A 32″ flat screen television is centered on the forward bulkhead. Retractable vertical storage for four rods, neatly set under the portside countertop, hides away when not in use. Alongside the berth, port and starboard, are the innovative, patent-pending Integrated Rod Storage Slides™ securely stowing four more rods. The generous console head is starboard and includes a lighted, mirrored glass cabinet over the stainless steel sink, and a shower with a classic teak grid floor. A clever, elegant hinged fiberglass door partitions off the shower area, keeping the rest of the compartment dry, and creates an additional locker for another four rods. This luxurious cabin hosts lockable storage for a total of 12 rods.

On deck, forward of the cabin, the Canyon 456 proves it has a double life as an elegant lounge-and-leisure platform. Atop the forward cabin, very comfortable lounge cushions create an incomparable space for sun worshippers. The bow seating area continues the theme of exceptional detail, comfort, and elegant style. There are two large plumbed, insulated boxes portside (43 and 123 quarts), and a huge 210-quart box starboard. Atop the boxes, deeply cushioned seating complemented by three-way positioned stowable backrests surrounds two motorized semi-circular fiberglass tables. When the tables are in the down position, they can be covered with cushions for yet another lounging platform. One notable advantage of the semicircular tables is that they allow access all the way to the bow and windless, and loungers need not move out of the way! Anchor rode storage include up to 400 feet of rode and 30 feet of chain. Drop the plow anchor anywhere the crew wants to stop. If fishermen are sight casting off the bow, remove the cushions, and–voila!–there’s an ample, strong casting platform.

What about listing price ranges? When the nice people trained me in marketing they said that if it doesn’t have a price on it then it’s not for sale. It also probably will not appeal to the must-have-money-no-problem few,because there are prettier forty gives out there. Shame it needs four engines,would not a couple of big blown V8 deisel have been better? R

I was at a boat show a while back I asked for a price of a Bertram so salesman told me. If you have to ask the prices you probably can’t afford it. That quote alone scared me off.

JUST THINK OF HITTING A ROCK AT FULL THROTTLE WITH THIS BOAT. THERE WOULD BE BEER CANS FLOATING EVERYWHERE. I CANT SWIM SO I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RETRIVE THEM FOR MY 5 CENT DEPOSIT. NOT COUNTING THE HARD STUFF THAT SUNK TO THE BOTTOM.

Nice boat BUT. I would personally (Huge fan of OTW who depends on info.) like to see more smaller boats featured in First Look. Well these boats are nice to day dream about and a reality to the 1%ers your every day OTW reader hardcore fishermen are 18 to 24 foot boat guys. There are a world of great 18 to 24 foot fishing boats out there that I would rather read about and day dream about, but one a day dream that I have the ability to make a reality. Thank You And For your consideration.

From the point of view of someone who enjoys the feeling of water flowing around him in waders – looking down and seeing bait fish swimming by – crabs & even a small lobster on the bottom – how do you justify spending $80,000 for the four outboards alone to power this thing? Can’t imagine what the total price would be- and if I had that much money to spend it would be on something else….

A 45 foot yacht is a common target for buyers seeking to do a bit more with their boating. Whether it’s the goal of going beyond simple dayboating or hosting more guests onboard to enjoy the water, the 45 foot yacht is considered a great “sweet spot” for many boaters. This size range often provides multiple living spaces and plenty of amenities while still being a very manageable boat at an affordable price point. It’s an attractive option for both boaters looking to upgrade from a small boat or individuals seeking to downsize from a larger yacht to something a bit more manageable.

While it can be common to start with what size vessel is right for you, there are a number of other questions about your planned boating activities that will help narrow down your buying options. For example, what is your perfect day on the water? Will you be doing more day boating or long-range cruising? Do you plan to enjoy water sports or fishing? How much time do you plan to spend on the yacht (an afternoon? weekends? etc.)? These questions will lead the process of buying a 45 foot yacht.

Deciding between a new or pre-owned yacht is another major question worth proper consideration. Depending on your experience, a new vessel can provide additional peace of mind as well as the latest technology and features that can make operating your yacht a breeze (e.g. dock joysticking). By purchasing new, you’ll have additional assurance that individual components are working properly and the vessel will come with a warranty. 

Of course, new yachts are more expensive than pre-owned yachts, but the total cost of ownership can be comparable depending on the condition and age of the pre-owned vessel. If you have vast experience on the water, owning and operating a yacht that is likely to have more maintenance and repairs in the future may not be as intimidating when compared to someone new to boating. If considering an option on the pre-owned market, consider limiting the age to only a few years back as the number of possible issues increase dramatically the further back you go in years. We often suggest sticking with newer boats even if it means a smaller vessel.

Express yachts, express cruisers, sport yachts are all terms that tend to describe the same type of yacht: a yacht with a single deck above the hull and living quarters down below. These yachts tend to be “the sports car” of the yacht world and come with a sleek and sporty look.

Flybridge or sedan bridge yachts are essentially express yachts with another level on top of the main deck that is large enough for a control station and some seating. The flybridge can often give the owner a 360 degree view of the water, enabling navigation from a higher vantage point. The upper deck, if not enclosed, can provide a more open air feel while navigating or simply provide a way to get away from the other guests down below. Sportfish convertible yachts can often overlap with this category as yachts that can convert to either a fishing vessel or more of a cruising yacht.

A sportfish yacht is a more general term referring to yachts geared towards fishing. They often include a spacious cockpit from which to fish and plenty of amenities aimed to enable you and your guests to pursue that trophy catch. 

Motor yachts traditionally refer to any large motor-powered vessels, but in today’s landscape, it more often refers to a multi-deck yacht with a spacious interior. Motor yachts can frequently have a larger interior space that is further forward in the vessel resulting in less outside bow space. This is a preferred yacht type for owners seeking longer stays aboard their yacht.

A 45 foot yacht is a common size vessel for boaters looking to do a bit more than simple day boating or for individuals looking to downsize from a larger yacht. A 45 foot yacht is considered by many boaters to be a great “sweet spot” of providing multiple living spaces and plenty of amenities while still being a very manageable boat. The affordability compared to larger yachts make this size range attractive as well.

While identifying the right size vessel for you is key, you’ll want to consider a number of additional questions about your intended boating activities to help narrow down your buying options. What is your perfect day on the water? Will you be doing a lot of day boating, or mostly long-range cruising? Will you be fishing on the water? How much time do you plan to spend on the yacht (for example, a day, weekends or longer)? Will you be sleeping overnight on the yacht? What is your prior boating experience? How important is speed?

The answers to these questions will be useful in narrowing down the options for consideration. Another major consideration when purchasing a yacht is whether you will opt for a new vessel or go the route of a pre-owned yacht. 

If your yachting experience is limited, going with a new 45 foot yacht can be an attractive option. Buying a new yacht gives boaters an increased sense of security as it limits the unknowns that might come with a pre-owned vessel. You’ll know all the components are working as designed and the yacht will come with a warranty. 

If you have years of experience on the water and are comfortable in and around boats, hitting the pre-owned market might be simple and easy for you. Experienced boaters are less intimidated by potential maintenance and repairs that come with older vessels. While used boats cost less on the front end, buyers will want to consider the full cost of ownership which takes into account maintenance, insurance, and more. Also, buyers seeking options on the pre-owned market will want to only go back so many years. While large vessels get increasingly inexpensive the more years you go back, boats with a significant number of years on them can be misleading with respect to value. As a boat ages a number of years, the number of issues that arise that an owner must deal with increase dramatically. We typically suggest sticking with newer boats even if that means a slightly smaller vessel.

Of course, if you’re using a yacht broker, this process is simplified and you can leverage the broker’s knowledge to seek out the best options from both new yachts and the pre-owned market.

Flybridge or sedan bridge yachts are essentially express yachts with another level on top of the main deck that is large enough for a control station and some seating. The flybridge gives the owner a way to navigate the vessel from a higher vantage point, get a more open air feel while navigating or simply provide a way to get away from the other guests down below. 

Another category that can occasionally overlap with the others is the motor yacht or power cruiser category. These boats tend to have very nice accommodations for owners and guests while providing ample power to get where they want to get. 

A sportfish is a general term used to describe yachts that are geared towards fishing which is common in this size range. These yachts will have a spacious cockpit from which to fish and have features and storage aimed at storing and handling rods, bait, tackle and other gear you might have to pursue your trophy catch.

Owner of sunken boat leaking oil in Harpswell summonsed

HARPSWELL (WGME) -- The owner of a sunken 80-foot-long fishing boat that’s sitting at the bottom of New Meadows River in Harpswell and leaking oil is now facing charges.

The boat sank in Harpswell during January’s twin storms and record-high tides.

The harbor master says he hasn't received a plan yet for raising and disposing of the sunken boat.

According to the harbor master, the town is summonsing the boat owner for the Class E criminal crime of abandonment of a watercraft.

The owner could be fined the cost of removal plus 50 percent of that cost.

Removing the boat from the water and towing it piece by piece could cost more than $100,000.

EXCLUSIVE: U.S Coast Guard shows ABC7 how they search and rescue on their response boat

S T. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB) - Within the last few months, U.S Coast Guard crews have rescued and searched for several missing boaters, and people stranded, in our Gulf waters.

On Tuesday, the crew stationed in St. Petersburg took ABC7 news on an exclusive ride along onboard their 45-foot response boat to show us how they conduct search and rescue missions.

They start with a call that comes from the command center, then after details about the missing are gathered, a plan of action is created.

After that, the crew on the water takes over, jumping into action fast.

They are responsible for over 1,700 nautical miles of the coast, spanning from parts of Alabama, all the way down to parts of the Everglades.

When they act, they do so with several other agencies, depending on the location of the situation.

Tyler Powers is one of the heroes we had the opportunity to speak with. He has saved over 30 lives.

“The ability to save one’s life is unmeasurable,” said Powers. “It’s why I keep showing up to work.”

When the Coast Guard crews head to the rescue, they go into dangerous water conditions that we’re told to stay out of.

“Anytime leaving the dock can be dangerous,” said Powers.

Tracy Mannes was working alongside Powers during the training session. She also discussed how when stress kicks in, you have to work with it, not against it.

“Its definitely adrenaline driven,” said Mannes. “We train to do this; we train in good conditions, and we train in bad conditions.”

While the crew has no problem saving your life, they ask that you protect yourself as much as possible.

Having a float plan is the best way to stay prepared and get help fast if something goes wrong on a boat day. You can find more information on what a float plan is and see a PDF version of the plan that you can fill out here .

They also recommend always letting someone know when you leave and when you plan to return.

They ask everyone to wear life jackets while on the water, and they suggest that you dress for the water temperature, not the air. That way if you go overboard the insulation will help you have a better chance for survival.
