C&C 30 – blistering performance in a manageable package

The C&C 30 strikes a good balance between performance and handling, believes Matthew Sheahan. She’s a fast ride, but without the jitters

Today, going like the clappers downwind is easy; anyone can do it. But there are two basic approaches: there is eye-watering, fixed-grin, backside-twitchingly quick, with the boat balanced on a knife edge, and there’s clocking the same numbers without the jitters.

In the latter case the boat knows where to go and encourages you to follow by gradually loading the helm as if starting a friendly arm wrestle. Push her too far and you’ll still end up on your ear, but at least you will have had plenty of warning.

Developing a balance between performance and handling has been a tough nut to crack. How do you produce slender, high-lift foils with minimal drag without creating a lifting surface that operates like the flick of a switch? Such binary hydrodynamic behaviour has taxed modern yacht designers for years, but the lessons learned aboard the big boys’ VO70s, mini maxis and TP52s, among others, have been filtering down into the smaller size ranges.

Then there’s the issue of deck layouts and control line systems. Again, the big guns have led the way with innovative details and devices to help crews change gear from the weather rail as they hike over the guardwires.

But not everything that has filtered down has been appropriate. Just as the complexity and power of a modern F1 racing car makes it impossible to pull away without stalling for anyone other than a seasoned racing driver, so not all the high technology aboard professionally run grand-prix machines works for the rest of us.

Striking the balance is the key. And that’s where the Mark Mills-designed C&C30 stands out in the new breed of 30ft raceboats.

This is a design that takes the best bits of modern high performance and wraps them up with a deck layout that will look and feel familiar to a wide range of crews, yet launch them onto a new level of performance.

Technology where it’s needed

Throughout the boat it is clear that the strategy has been to employ technology where it makes a difference while keeping things simple elsewhere. The best example is the Hall Spars carbon mast supported by 1×19 Dyform wire rigging with ordinary T-terminals on the top and open-bodied bottlescrews at the bottom.

But there are plenty of other examples, from the simple hanks on the headsails to transverse genoa tracks and control lines fitted and run above decks with rope tidy bags. Even when lines do need to go under the deck to prevent crew from standing on them at crucial times, they do so through recessed channels in the deck, which are covered by easily removable lids.

Down below there’s a similarly practical approach. Sparse though her interior is, with little headroom thanks to the flush deck, she still has basic seating and cushions with the provision for hingeing pipecots, a heads and even a small galley should you wish to take her offshore. She has no mast jack, but she has a simple rigging screw-driven adjustable mast foot to allow you to alter the mast rake.

She's easier to keep in the groove than others of her ilk

She’s easier to keep in the groove than others of her ilk

The C&C30 also has very few openings in the deck, a rarity aboard modern raceboats, which can look like pepper pots from the inside. Despite taking several waves over the foredeck on our downhill slide and a few thumps through the chop upwind, she had less than half a bucket of water in the bilges at the end of our test sail, most of which was shipped when a wave came over the bow just before the kite drop and the foredeck hatch was open.

Look a little closer and there are some very neat ideas, among them the non-retractable, but detachable bowsprit. This can be removed when the boat is at rest by untying the bobstay that runs from the bow to the tip of the sprit and back through its centre to emerge below, where it is attached to the main bulkhead. This allows the sprit to be pulled out of its socket and stowed.

Another clever detail is the constrictor lock for the main halyard, which is operated below decks, along with the halyard itself – simple and effective.

On deck the low-friction bullseye fairleads have been set up to allow cross sheeting of the genoa sheets, and the position of the primary winches make this system easy to use from the weather rail.

Overall the deck layout has been well thought out, with everything within easy reach. One particular detail is the ability for the mainsheet trimmer to move behind the helmsman on the downwind leg without having to thread the mainsheet under the tiller – handy when the breeze is up.

Easy to get on with

The C&C30 is a boat that is very easy to get on with so long as you let her talk you through where she wants to go. Unlike the superlight, almost neutral feel of many modern machines, the helm loads up significantly, but smoothly if you stray too far outside the sail trim envelope. As always, whether sailing upwind or down, fighting the helm is a cue to talk to your trimmers, but here the feedback is that bit clearer, which helps you to stay in the groove.

She doesn’t have such aggressive chines aft as other boats of her ilk and appears to carry less rocker here too. As a result, she tends not to squat down by the stern and lift her bow when you send her downwind. To get her to accelerate and stay on the plane you still need to press her to get around 5° of heel, but the transition is much smoother than others of this type.

Upwind feedback through the helm was clear and unequivocal

Upwind feedback through the helm was clear and unequivocal

This can feel a little odd at first if you are more used to the bow-up trim of other downhill flyers. It also means you have to plan the gusts a little more carefully to avoid putting the handbrake on as you bear away.

But make no mistake, she’s quick. In 16-18 knots of true breeze we were sliding along at 14-16 knots with ease. Such relatively docile handling will inspire confidence, particularly with those making the transition from heavier, conventional boats to something a little more saucy.

And therein lies what I believe is the key to the C&C30; she’s a modest, manageable and practical package that is capable of a blistering performance.

It is inevitable that she will be compared with the Farr 280, especially as both boats were launched at around the same time. Broadly speaking, they look similar and have little to separate them on the technical spec sheets. With a basic price tag of US$137,390 ex works USA, the C&C30 is slightly more expensive, but in the same ball park.

But the best thing about this boat is that she’s another in the growing band of sporty 30-footers. All want to be tomorrow’s successful one-design, and maybe some of them will be, but in the meantime her arrival adds another model into this growing fleet of sportsboats. Everyone can go quickly downhill, it’s just how you choose to do it that is different. And now there’s even more choice.

C&C 38-2

C&C 38-2 is a 37 ′ 6 ″ / 11.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Robert Ball and C&C Design and built by C&C Yachts starting in 1975.

Drawing of C&C 38-2

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

C&C 30 High Performance One Design

The C&C30 is an exciting opportunity for us to take a fresh look at what a modern high performance One Design can offer, and do so with some of the best performance experts in the business, including KND Sailing Performance, a company based in Spain who we partner with on our Grand Prix racing projects like our recent Mini-Maxi Alegre.  Their unique features include a specialty in CFD and VPP performance prediction, as well as performance analysis of logged data for classes such as the TP52 fleet, Volvo 65’s, and the Mini-Maxis.

Starting with the certainty that the new design would need to be light with lots of sail area for exhilarating performance, what would be necessary to reinvent the type in 2014?  Listening to owners and dealers it became clear that previous generations of Sportsboats now require too many crew, and too many professional crew, to sail to their potential.  Professional numbers were easy to take care of with a well-written One Design rule put together by C&C 30 builder and One Design supremo Barry Carroll who stewarded the Mumm 30 and Farr 40 classes to worldwide success.

Addressing crew numbers was another issue, which required some thought to reduce without leaving the boat overpowered in a breeze under its sizable sail plan.  Our solution is to combine the lowest VCG possible with features such as the carbon fin with  a hull shape that has a slim waterline beam at rest, like a conventional sportsboat, for low wetted surface area and drag.  In light airs the C&C 30 should be sailed fairly upright, and with the crew weight forwards as usual to maintain that low drag configuration.  As the wind increases her wider hull shape above the waterline begins to immerse with increasing heel angle, adding significant amounts of form stability and using more of the sail plans power, allowing the crew to shift aft to further increase stability.  This stability from the hull form allows the C&C30 class to limit crew numbers and allows teams to focus on sailing and having fun instead of finding and managing  large crews, it even encourages shorthanded sailing in the right events.

To ensure the C&C30 incorporated the latest thinking in deck and sail handling systems such as the spinnaker retrieval system Volvo Ocean Race skipper Charlie Enright was asked for his input: “Jesse Fielding and I helped design the deck layout for the C&C30 by using our experience on a variety of different boats; everything from Mini-Maxis to Skiffs to other boats in the 30 foot range. It will be ergonomically easy and extremely efficient to use.”

Architects and Fashion Designers Are Penning Yachts, and It’s Changing How They’re Made

That design rulebook has now been thrown out, thanks to shifting priorities, new technologies, and the pandemic-fueled boom in yacht ownership. A rising generation of younger owners prefers watersports toys and wellness suites over cigar lounges and book-matched mahogany. Seductive superyacht concepts on social media promise a life in which families waft unbounded through fluid, open-plan, indoor-outdoor spaces devoid of clutter and supporting walls.

Suffice to say, such experimentation is not typically dictated by dyed-in-the-wool naval architects but comes from a fresh influx of creative outsiders from the land-bound worlds of hotels, private homes, furniture, and even fashion. The designers serving the yacht-owning class of 2024 may be disparate, but they have one thing in common: Boats are not their area of expertise.

For decades, a group of former apprentices of Jon Bannenberg, the godfather of yacht design, dominated the field with their trademark lavish style. Bannenberg, part of London’s “swinging ’60s” creative wave, designed celebrated vessels for the great and the not-so-great, including Malcolm Forbes, Adnan Khashoggi, and Robert Maxwell. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, his protégés—Andrew Winch, Terence Disdale, and Tim Heywood—catered to the tastes of their plutocrat clientele (think fussy moldings, high-gloss hardwoods, tinkling crystal, and veiny marble), with their brand names adding pedigree to ships and their style seen as the hallmark of opulence.

An embrace of the outdoors was a crucial focus for Norman Foster , one of the world’s most famous architects, whose designs for the 2008 YachtPlus fractional-ownership fleet, though controversial, prefigured some of today’s trends. Foster was perhaps the first outsider to disrupt the industry—“a conservative world” at the time, according to Angus Campbell, a senior partner at Foster’s practice who worked on the project: “You spend all this money, and then you have to look through these tiny little porthole windows; you’re on the sea, but you can’t see out. Why is that? So we looked at creating windows and external space that you can walk around.”

In 2010, Vitelli found herself asking similar questions and decided to hold design competitions specifically for creatives from outside the industry. A successful initial collaboration with architect Achille Salvagni that same year led to a series of partnerships with other architects known for their global portfolios of luxury retail, hotel, residential, and product design, including Lazzarini Pickering in Rome, which did two interiors in the Benetti Motopanfilo line; Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez in Milan, who are producing sustainable designs for the Azimut Seadeck series (the first of which will launch at Salone del Mobile this month); and Bonetti/Kozerski in New York, responsible for the interiors of Benetti’s 40M and 34M Oasis series.

Bonetti/Kozerski, based in New York, aimed for nonchalant elegance with its Oasis series for Benetti.

The results upended yachting convention. The traditional, strict divisions between interior and exterior were eroded, with “huge glass, huge doors” and a drop-down stern, recalls Vitelli, referring to Benetti’s pioneering “Oasis deck”—a lowered rear section with wings that fold down to create an expanded beach-club zone.

Oceanco , a full-custom builder that counts Jeff Bezos and Steven Spielberg among its clients, now works with non-yachting designers under its NXT program, while Amer, a smaller semi-custom brand from the Permare Group , recently partnered with Milan-based architectural studio Palomba Serafini to create the award-winning F100 Glass Cabin. And in 2020, Giovanni Costantino, founder and CEO of the Italian Sea Group (TISG), reeled in the Moby Dick of designers: Giorgio Armani . The fashion maestro, who has owned his own yachts for two decades, not only signed up to create two Armani-branded 236-foot Admiral megayachts, including one launching at the Monaco Yacht Show this year, but also bought a 4.99 percent stake in TISG.

The fashion icon’s design for the 236-foot Admiral megayacht leans into his sophisticated, muted palette and prioritizes outdoor space.

The brand-name appeal of famous designers targets a new type of buyer, one who shops for a yacht as they would a luxury car, says Philippe Briand, a naval architect and creator of racing vessels as well as Vitruvius superyachts. The previous generation “came with sailing experience,” he says, “so they were more aware of functionality and constraints. Today, this generation are newcomers, and they’re consumers. That’s fine, but they need to be a bit educated about how complex it is to create a boat.”

Ownership is expanding and changing. There were 1,203 superyacht projects under construction in 2023, according to the Global Order Book, an annual industry survey. That’s nearly twice as many as a decade prior, and demand looks likely to grow in line with the boom in multimillionaires: The most recent UBS Global Wealth Report predicts that the number of people with over $50 million in assets will rise to 372,000 by 2027, up from 243,060 in 2022.

Gregory C. Marshall, a veteran naval architect based in Victoria, British Columbia, says his millennial clients (some are in their 20s) “just don’t seem to be interested in traditional superyacht thinking, ” adding that “they travel with a backpack and surfboards.” They want ships that are “less polished on the outside and a little more ‘How many toys can I pile on?’ ”

But yachts are still status symbols: No one buys a superyacht solely from a love of sailing. “If people like the sea, in general they buy a sailboat,” Rodriguez notes. For grander vessels, clients see no reason not to bring in a famous name with no knowledge of the category “like they use a designer for a house in the city or in the countryside,” he says. “It’s a floating house.”

Roberto Palomba’s vessel for Amer was commissioned by a client for whom he had designed projects on terra firma. “He knew me and he loves my style, so he wanted my style in his yacht,” says Palomba, who had no previous marine experience.

The older generation of owners believed that conventional layouts by established industry professionals locked in resale value; today’s clients are much more comfortable with risk. Concepts aimed at this market include vessels shaped like sharks, the Star Trek Enterprise, and bird skeletons. Oceanco’s NXT offerings include Aeolus, a 430-foot gigayacht with a huge, sculpted primary suite and panoramic windows, and Kairos, which has the cosmic, asymmetric feel of a Tokyo shopping mall.

The airy primary bedroom on Oceanco’s 430-foot Aeolus concept features a wall of windows and plenty of sculpted curves.

Much of the work of external designers involves removing clutter. Giorgio Armani tells Robb Report that his blueprints were inspired by the clean lines of military vessels “and the optimization of space characteristic of old ships—away with all the infrastructures that can normally be seen, such as the tenders.”

Inside his Admiral yacht for TISG, windows feature sliding panels to help create “spacious interiors flooded with natural light,” he says. “The sensation is wide-ranging and of total immersion in the surrounding environment.” The effect, enhanced by the stealth-wealth decor, recalls his relaxed yet deceptively decadent suits.

Touring yachts as part of his research for the Oasis series, Enrico Bonetti, of Bonetti/Kozerski, found the interiors “very stiff, rigid, with furniture where nobody would sit” while also prioritizing “something flashy here, something else flashy over there. So what we tried to do is to link all the spaces together and have a continuation of materials and textures and colors.” The aim, he says, is nonchalance: “sophisticated but without showing it too much.”

The main difference between the old and the new is a shift away from ostentation and toward a discreetly refined simplicity. Rodriguez’s mantra is “Always remove.” Instead of a bunch of gold and marble, he says, “we try to do the opposite, to keep only the materials you need, and never, never to show off.” He calls this approach the new luxury.

Sustainability is another driver of change. For the interiors of Azimut’s Seadeck, Rodriguez says he selected exclusively recycled or recyclable materials, including a carpet made from discarded fishing nets, which Vitelli describes as “pleasant to touch.” She adds, “You don’t have that cold plastic effect—it’s like silk.”

Change isn’t always welcomed by the technical teams who have to turn outsiders’ nautical fantasies into seaworthy vessels. “I’ve seen a lot of examples of yachts which have been controlled by the interior designer, and in the end [it] does not hang together,” says Philippe Briand, the naval architect, who prefers to work only with marine-specific interior designers.

We were trying to push the boundaries and create a better experience for the guests, rather than make it easy to tie up when you’re trying to bring it into shore. – Angus Campbell

He particularly abhors the proliferation of unrealistic concepts on social media: “They’re all fake, to be honest, because they’re not representing any existing boat—they’re only the dream or the marketing of a young designer.” Moreover, these renderings are “polluting the market,” he says, because they give clients improbable expectations. “The client says, ‘You’re creative, you’re inventive, so I’m going to order a boat from you [only] if you’re able to do the same design I saw.’ Which puts us in a very difficult situation.”

Briand cites the trend for ultralow beach clubs, which he calls unfeasible in even slightly choppy water. “To make an attractive image in a magazine,” he says, the rendering needs to be “flat, all open, two feet above the water—and, of course, on the rendering, the water is [also] flat. It’s not corresponding to any real functionality. I mean, it’s basically fashion.”

Marshall, the Artefact ’s architect, agrees that clients often bring concepts that are impractical but usually finds that, with “some minor adjustments,” the designs are “buildable without losing the aesthetic inspiration.” He says it largely depends on the purpose of the yacht, with an oceangoing vessel requiring more serious engineering than a Monaco posing platform—not every model needs to be able to “survive a hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic.”

Marshall likewise welcomes the creative tension inherent in a meeting between external creatives and in-house engineers. “We look at it like a war,” he says, cheerfully. “Because the reality is each discipline is in conflict with the other disciplines. You may love the styling, but the structural people go, ‘Thanks, how do I build that?’ ” The way he manages the mediation process is to “start with the concept, go to a certain point and stop, then do a structural pass, then do a mechanical pass, [then] go back to styling—and the stylists of course look at it and go, ‘Oh, my gosh, all these engineers just slaughtered my brilliant design.’ And we go round and round.” The conflict is the point, he says. “When you get the balance right, then it’s a good design.”

Palomba and Bonetti both encountered resistance to their initial ideas for Amer and Benetti, respectively. According to the former, he had to “force the producer to create big windows,” while Bonetti recalls continually clashing with what he refers to as “the rules,” such as having an elaborately set but unused dining table in the main salon. “For us, not knowing the rules [made it] easier to do things a little bit differently.”

The Milan-based architecture and design duo created the F100 Glass Cabin for Amer Yachts.

That often fruitful tension between outsiders and insiders can tip out of balance in the presence of what Marshall calls a forceful stylist. He’s happy to incorporate “round windows, triangular windows, giant staircases,” as long as the vessel operates as more than a stage set.

One veteran yacht designer, asking not to be named, points to Foster’s YachtPlus as an example of form outweighing function. “It just didn’t function as a boat that well, in terms of the normal day-to-day things, like simply tying it up. A lot of the aesthetic inspiration that non-boat people come up with is very clever, but if it doesn’t meet the core usage, it doesn’t last very well.”

Maritime regulations often curtail the ambitions of owners and designers. A client’s desire for double-height ceilings is hard to square with fire regulations, which limit the number of open spaces. “A boat is not a bag, it’s not a dress,” says Vitelli. “There’s a lot of substance—you’re buying a floating object full of technology, so [safety] has to remain the priority.”

YachtPlus by Foster + Partners staircase

In terms of interiors, most still agree that the nautical nature of a yacht should be reflected in its fixtures and fittings. “A boat should remain a boat and should remain marine,” says Vitelli, adding that she rejected some architect proposals that were too close to “a New York loft.” Bonetti also cautions against mimicking residential styles too closely. “We’re seeing some boats that if you [replaced] the view from the windows with a street, it could be an apartment in the center of Berlin,” he says, adding that vessels can reflect their authentic purpose “without going back to the old mahogany interiors.”

But exactly how should a yacht’s design convey its marine essence? It’s partly a matter of safety, says Vitelli: It must have “rounded shapes,” because no one wants to encounter a sharp corner in a storm; handrails and non-slip floors are also crucial. But for a superyacht, it’s also a matter of luxury aesthetics—which means bespoke built-in furniture. Anything off-the-peg “is not perceived as top luxury by certain customers, it’s luxury that we can more or less all afford to buy—Poltrona Frau or Minotti.” In other words: mass luxury.

If the glass is actually stronger than my aluminum structure, why would I make it out of aluminum and not glass? – Gregory C. Marshall

When is a boat not a boat? When it is, in Armani’s words, “a moving house, with particular characteristics.” Today’s owners employ residential architects precisely in order to create the feel of a floating home. Such personal designs will inevitably conflict with the mathematical certainties of naval engineering. But the best shipyards welcome outsiders who bring the friction that sparks creativity—such open-mindedness is especially necessary as technology continues to expand what’s possible. Yacht design is not “an ever-fixed mark / That looks on tempests and is never shaken,” as Shakespeare might have it, but instead it must trim its sails to the prevailing wind.

SEAmagine Co-Founder and Chairman Charles Kohnen inside the bubble of a SEAmagine sub.

Manned submersibles are very popular on superyachts these days, but how often do they get used? If they complete 50 dives a year, that’s a lot, says Charles Kohnen. At SEAmagine, Kohnen counters, “50 dives is a Tuesday.”

Charles Kohnen, Co-Founder and Chairman at Seamagine Hydrospace Corporation in Upland, CA, the world’s oldest manned submersible manufacturer, is thrilled that the revival of undersea exploration is beginning to get the attention it deserves. After all, the earth’s surface is about 71 percent water. Yet, compared to outer space, we know comparatively little about what lies below the waterline.

Wide, panoramic view in the SEAmagine submersible, and pinpoint maneuverability due to six powerful ... [+] propulsion motors offer up-close precision without contact.

Kohnen believes that giving owners support in planning interesting and exciting dives is of prime importance. “Just having a sub on a yacht is not enough. If you don’t bring the true value of the subs to their owners, you’re missing the big picture.” A little follow up with help in planning dives goes a long way.

Kohnen adds, “We support our clients to make sure long-term value is brought forward,” making sure every “baby” has growth and every single one of them brings the maximum value. Kohnen maintains he isn’t just about selling subs. He’s in this for mankind at large.

Netflix Is In A Bind With 3 Body Problem Season 2

Google suddenly reveals surprise android update that beats iphone, ukraine has developed 15 kinds of long range strike drone and has sortied them against russia s oil industry, 28 years of experience with thousands and thousands of dives.

In the 1990s, Kohnen says, subs had all but been abandoned, with just a few government vessels still in operation. In 1995, Kohnen and his brother William, wondered why subs were so complicated, requiring something like a space shuttle launch in preparation for every dive. They considered use of a manned platform that would launch like a tender, and the modern submersible was born.

Their first consultant was Don Walsh, an American oceanographer, explorer, and marine expert. Walsh was in the bathyscaphe Trieste in 1960 as it made history diving to the Challenger Deep. The story of the Trieste is one in itself, but the story of SEAmagine and its lists of firsts had just begun.

SEAmagine Was First In … Well, Just About Everything

In trying to encourage underwater astronauts to explore the ocean depths, SEAmagine set about simplifying subs. They were the first to redefine the basic concept of what a small, manned sub looked like, as well as what it could do. They were the first to adopt the acrylic sphere as a cabin design, which eventually became the industry standard. They also elevated the style and finish of subs, giving them a more polished appearance.

Historically, subs had been boarded prior to launch, but SEAmagine introduced a stable surface platform that allowed passengers to board once the sub was put in the water. That became another industry standard.

SEAmagine was the first to supply the Coast Guard and defense sectors with robust subs required for their demanding schedules. The company also created a training program for professional submersible pilots in the 1990s, developed with the US Coast Guard.

Stylish design, inside and out, refined by lots of dive experience, contributes to the engineering ... [+] and evolution of SEAmagine subs

With all these firsts, one might question why they are not as well-known as some other brands. Kohnen responds with a hearty laugh, “Because we are better engineers than marketing people.”

The 6th Generation Of Design

By 2005, as yachts became bigger and subs became simpler, several competitors in the small submersible industry had surfaced. SEAmagine's supply of subs to the yachting sector amounted to about half of their business. The other half served science, defense, and industry. Regardless, they wanted their subs to be rugged, reliable, simple to operate, and comfortable to dive in.

Co-Founder and Chairman of SEAmagiine Charles Kohnen in SEAmagine sub just breaking the surface of ... [+] the ocean.

SEAmagine set about refining and simplifying, creating elegant, robust designs that would not break at sea and would work, without fail, every day. It meant examining not just what’s possible, but empirically, sifting through what is important, what is critical, what is nice to have. In the end, Kohnen says, efficiency and simplicity are top goals.

With regard to priorities, Kohnen says, “It’s all about compromise of space, weight, and cost,” noting that the physics are the same.

Kohnen explains, “The weight of a sub is more determined by the water displacement of volume, not the acrylic or metal. A bigger space equals more weight, more displacement. Better engineering that resulted in a change in battery technology saved a lot of water displacement, a lot of weight. We added these savings to the passenger experience to increase space in the bubble.”

Panoramic visibility from the bubble gives passengers an excellent view of the deep in this ... [+] SEAmagine sub.

Improving visibility with a larger field of view in the Aurora series , SEAmagine moved the hatch to the back and added a hall structure for the pilot, while making the pontoons less prominent in front. Removing the obstructions contributed to an improved panoramic and overhead view with more personal space for passengers. SEAmagine also worked hard on making the sub quiet, inside and out. It did not happen by accident but as a design objective, trading gear boxes for direct drives.

To fine tune the sub’s agility, SEAmagine installed the powerful propulsion used by navy seals. Heavy and expensive, they opted to install six propulsion motors for precision mobility so that pilots could get up close and personal with flora, fauna, and sea floor, in perfect control without making contact.

The Importance Of Citizen Scientists

Kohnen explains that there are two types of sub owners in the citizen arena. Their passion lies either with discovery of new life or discovery of shipwrecks, “Never both,” he notes. Either way, there is a long list of yacht owners making history simply by “being there and making a discovery.”

Discovery of a 2000-year-old Roman amphora off the coast of Siciliy by a "citizen scientist" from a ... [+] SEAmagine sub dive

One owner, on a sub dive off the coast of Sicily, found a 2000-year-old Roman amphora, which was promptly photographed and the coordinates sent to the authorities for retrieval. On a training dive for the crew of the expedition yacht Hodor , a prickly shark was spotted, which, in French Polynesia, was, “Like finding a zebra in Alaska,” Kohnen joked.

SEAmagine sub unloading from expedition yacht Hodor in preparation for a dive.

“Dives are sometimes mud, and sometimes, it blows your mind away,” Kohnen sighs. Once, in a pure exploration dive, he recalled diving down a 200-meter-deep wall in Costa Rica with lava caves full of fish. At the bottom, a creature with a big head, big green eyes, a tail like an eel, and translucent tentacles writhing from its belly appeared. All on board were wondering what in the world they had just seen.

Hopefully, someday, we’ll know.

Van Geest Design presents 135m "brutalist" superyacht concept

Van Geest Design has revealed a new 135-metre superyacht concept whose design is guided by "sheer brutality".

Known as Project 135, the concept is inspired by the brutalist architecture of the 50s and 60s, as well as aircraft carriers and large warships.

According to founder Pieter van Geest, the focus is on "functional design, instead of [creating an] over-designed, pretty jewellery box. Project 135 is aimed at a freethinking and unbiased owner."

Leisure features include a forward-facing observation lounge positioned above the bow, "party decks" aft and approximately 1600 square metres dedicated to the owner across two decks. Project 135 also benefits from a heli hangar and two helipads.

Van Geest added: "Sometimes, lengthy discussions and complicated details dominate projects, instead of focusing on the purpose of yachting – the fun and the joy. To make a point, we created Project 135 as the opposite."

The studio most recently revealed Domus Cat to BOAT International , an entirely open-plan, 30-metre catamaran concept.

Broker's comments.

Another rare opportunity to own one of the best tough sailing yachts in the world on short notice. This immaculate, hardly used 2014 Bestevaer 49ST is one of the favourite models built by KM Yachtbuilders. This beautiful, complete, modern Bestevaer 49ST " Mate " is clearly the little sister of the “Bestevaer II”, from the famous designer Gerard Dijkstra has built for his own use. The sailing characteristics are excellent and, also due to the presence of the pilot house, make this boat a very comfortable boat for long trips. Now ready to be admired and inspected.

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL

KM Yachtbuilders, Bestevaer 66 Built 2014 / €1,450,000, + VAT

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Bestevaer 66, ANABEL is an extraordinary world cruising yacht that was built for her current owner. She has taken him around the world in safety and with total reliability. He was closely involved with her build and she is very much a custom yacht. An enormous amount of care has gone into every aspect of her design and build, providing built in redundancy of her systems and safety for her crew and longevity for her. She has a powerful and easily handled sail plan and a secure cockpit. Her pilothouse is the perfect place for navigating and her pilot house windows were recently replaced with laminated glass which is super strong. She has a comfortable main saloon for living well and 3 good sleeping cabins which are comfortable and safe for her crew in a seaway. Her lifting keel (with 9000kg lead bulb) gives her enormous flexibility and ultimate stability. With her metal construction and robust design profile she is perfect for all oceans and would be secure and safe for high and low latitude sailing as well and for cruising in warmer waters.

ANABEL has been meticulously maintained by her owner with a series of works when laid up in New Zealand. Recently her underwater profile has been taken back and re-coated and she has new standing rigging.

Yachts with this level of capability and also those that are so well proven, rarely come to the market and ANABEL is very special. Everywhere you look there are design touches that are unique to her and very smart. She is a great alternative to commissioning new build if you have a very serious cruising programme in mind.

Owner’s Comments

ANABEL has many admirers around the world. In every port I have been to, people have come by to have a look and express amazement. Many old salts have been on board, and all of them liked the yacht (even the Coastguard).

The yacht is quite a machine, and the new owner will get in depth explanation of all the details. Since I am the only person to know the yacht in detail, I am willing to spend a week or more, to transfer all knowledge to the new owner.

Since I have very much built this yacht, and lived aboard for some years, I wish her to pass into good hands and for her to sail the oceans of the world for many years to come.

During her 7 years of ownership various equipment has been replaced, added or modified (partly in New Zealand).

  • New diesel pumps for better diesel transfer.
  • A hydro generator.
  • Windlass set up modified for smooth chain operation.
  • Anchor re-galvanized.
  • Improved boom with 4. reefs fitted.
  • Keel lift cylinder overhauled and 2. seal + scrapper added.
  • Keel guides replaced.
  • Various ropes and sheets replaced.

Recently Changed or Replaced Equipment

  • New anchor chain.
  • All old anti fouling sanded off to the base coat.
  • Yacht will go into the water with fresh Antifouling.
  • Rudder bearings replaced.
  • CPP prop shaft demounted, new seals, cutlass bearing, greased.
  • New pilot house windows from laminated glass.
  • Re-caulking of the teak in cockpit.

BESTEVAER 53 S/Y

The 53 is perhaps best described by owner and designer Gerard Dykstra; “Designing any boat is a balancing act between many desirable characteristics and inevitably the end-product is a compromise, never perfect in all aspects. However, the Bestevaer comes close to my ideal. The past voyages proved this right.”

Opening yourself up to the world’s extremities and the unknown is easier when you’re at ease. That’s why comfort is a key element. Even the most rugged off-grid adventurer sailboats from Bestevaer offer smooth sailing and comfortable interiors.

Bestevaer sailboats are built with the highest grade aluminum available. Hull, pilothouse, superstructure as well as interior elements are built with hand shaped aluminum by some of the best craftspeople on the planet. Continuous welds, additional plating, and no FRP are hallmarks of the Bestevaers.

Fully Ballasted Keels

Flexibility in build choices without sacrificing strength is another Bestevaer trademark. Keel choices include a fixed keel or a centerboard keel for serious shoal cruising. Both have nearly a 40 percent ballast ratio, ensuring excellent sailing qualities.

The benefits of a pilothouse are well known, but Bestevaers provide unrivaled security and comfort. These insulated aluminum houses have excellent visibility, keep owners dry underway, and make excellent living spaces while on the hook.

First look: Bestevaer 36 – downsized pilothouse cruiser

The new Bestevaer 36 from renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra is the smallest ever boat in the history if the Besteaver brand

bestevaer sailing yachts for sale

Product Overview

In a world in which yachts are constantly becoming larger, this Dutch brand is bucking the trend, with the smallest-ever model in its 20-year history. It’s intended to offer performance along with shoal draught and the ability to safely dry out on a beach.

These rugged aluminium pilothouse cruisers have always reflected what former professional skipper and renowned naval architect Gerard Dijkstra wants in a boat of his own: a safe, comfortable, and good-looking yacht for unrestricted, short-handed sailing. It has proved to be the perfect formula for a lifetime of ocean sailing, high latitude work and solo racing.

The Bestevaer 36 follows in a similar spirit, but is also intended as a boat in which Dijkstra can spend extended periods in the shallow waters, lakes and coastlines close to home that he has not previously had time to explore in detail.

“The Bestevaer 36 is a high-performance little yacht. It’s a very easy boat to sail and versatile as well,” he says. “It will easily take you around the world but is also ideal for cruising the local wetlands.”

This vessel therefore needed to be a sufficiently compact yacht to easily fit in small harbours and marinas, with the ability to dry out when sailing in the beautiful Wadden Sea nearby. Yet it still retains all the distinctive features of the brand’s larger yachts including aluminium construction, watertight fore and aft bulkheads, plumb bow, practical pilothouse and deep bulwarks.

bestevaer sailing yachts for sale

Galley is to port, heads and diesel heater to starboard of the companionway. Light comes from overhead hatches and strong hull portlights

The two tonne ballasted centreboard provides a generous 2.4m draught when lowered. This is combined with a big rig to give good sailing performance on all points of sail, including close-hauled and light airs. Yet the board retracts fully into the canoe body, reducing draught to only 0.7m and creating a flat surface on which to dry out safely on the hull’s thick bottom plating.

Like the larger Bestevaers, this boat was conceived at the outset to offer crew plenty of protection. In addition to seats each side of the pilothouse, which has a 360˚ view, the coachroof extends over the cockpit, creating a very sheltered area. All lines are led aft for easy single-handed operation.

Generous beam helps to provide good form stability, as well as increasing accommodation volumes. The interior has a flexible semi-open plan layout, with three different style options.

The first boat, which will be the designer’s own, is currently in build and scheduled for completion this spring. This example is also being used as a case study for a transition towards more sustainable production processes at KM Yachtbuilders. For instance, 70% of the aluminium is recycled, as is the insulation, while environmentally friendly and largely recycled materials are used for the interior. It has a 15kW OceanVolt electric drive with sufficient battery capacity for four hours of autonomy. This is supplemented with regeneration and a large solar panel array on the pilothouse roof.

A couple of interesting options are offered for sail plans, including a 95% jib on a Hoyt boom, which makes for an enticing combination of very easy handling and excellent sail shape on all points of sail.

To help make up for loss of headsail area a square-top mainsail with 14% more area than the standard pinhead version can be specified.

The standard specification has a very high level of equipment, including the solar panels, electric propulsion package, antifouling wrap and a traditional style floor mounted with a Dickinson Alaska diesel heater.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

an old photo of a small boat being launched into the water with a crane

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

two men, one on a mobility scooter, are on a boardwalk with water and a small boat behind them

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

a picture of a scrap book with photos of a boat and cursive writing

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

renderings of Vitruvius Palm Beach superyacht

Vitruvius Yachts reveals 46m superyacht designed for the Bahamas

British design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed a new superyacht concept known as the Vitruvius Palm Beach. The 46-metre project is available for sale with Worth Avenue Yachts and has been tailored specifically for the North American market.

Several prominent shipyards are "currently bidding to bring this vision to life," according to the broker, with construction expected to begin next year.

The superyacht is designed with a low draft of two metres, making it best suited to shoal draft locations such as the Bahamas, Florida and The Chesapeake.

Accommodation is across five lower deck cabins, plus quarters for nine crew. The owner's cabin would be full-beam and features an office, dressing area, his and hers bathrooms and fold-down balcony.

While the interior designer is unconfirmed, preliminary renderings reveal a pared back, contemporary aesthetic. The main saloon benefits from full-height windows, a "convertible" lounging and dining area for 10 guests as well as a dedicated lounge starboard.

The main deck is fitted with a formal bar and second convertible seating area aft. Another major convivial space is the sundeck, which has a large sunbathing area, a bar, barbecue and a Jacuzzi.

Meanwhile, the beach club features a pool that can operate with freshwater or saltwater. Bulwarks open either side to form a larger lounging area, which is arranged with several sunpads.

The concept also includes a tender garage able to accommodate a six-metre and two jet skis, thanks to a Solas-compliant sliding beam crane and fold-up shell door for launching and loading.

Vitruvius Palm Beach would be powered by twin CAT 32 engines for a maximum speed of 15.7 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

This reveal follows the delivery of Vitruvius Yachts' 65.7-metre Alchemy .
