Become a Superyacht Deckhand

  • Begin a career on a Superyacht
  • Career paths

A Deckhand is an entry-level position, and the role can vary from yacht to yacht. However, the first responsibility for a Deckhand is the meticulous cleaning and maintenance of the exterior of the yacht, which must be kept in pristine condition at all times.

More than that, though, working as a Superyacht Deckhand is an exciting and rewarding career kick-starter that will see you travel across the globe, make amazing new friends and gain a plethora of new skills and experiences!

If you want to become a Deckhand then click the button below and start your new career today.

However, if you’re still not sure then continue reading to find out more about working as a Deckhand on a Superyacht.

How much does a Deckhand make on a Superyacht?

A Deckhand’s salary ranges between €2,000 to €3,500 a month, though the average is €2,500. Almost all Superyachts pay is in Euros. The salary can depend on many factors, the main one being the yacht’s “crew” budget.

The owner or management company will agree on a budget that the captain uses to hire crew. Each yacht will have a different budget, which can lead to small variations in the amount yachts pay their crew.

Your total salary can also depend on whether you work on a charter or private yacht. On a charter yacht, it is customary for charter guests to tip the crew, the tip is normally around 10% of the charter fee. Chartering a Superyacht can set you back anywhere from €250,000 to €1 million per week.

Tips are split evenly between the crew and on average your tip can be anything from €2,000 – €5,000 for a week’s charter. Tips are paid on top of your monthly salary. Our  guide on Superyacht salaries  will explain more. Remember, you live onboard the yacht so there are very few living expenses.

What qualifications do I need to be a Deckhand?

here are three areas to consider when it comes to qualifications and experience. The first two are mandatory, the third depends on you, what work experience you have or job you have been doing to date.

  • ENG 1 medical  required by all crew who work at sea. If you are thinking of becoming a Superyacht Deckhand we recommend you complete the ENG1 medical before completing Step 2.
  • STCW Basic Safety Training  is a set of compulsory safety qualifications required by all crew in case there is an emergency onboard. STCW is a six-day course comprising; sea survival, first aid, fire fighting (great fun), and health, safety, and security.
  • Get some experience  we will explain more below but you don’t have to come from a yachting background to work on a Superyacht. However, it does help if you know the basics. Yachts want to see that you have a good work ethic, like the outdoors, and can get on with people. If you have a background in; hospitality, Engineering, Carpentry, Electrician, Water sports instructor, Divemaster, to name a few, then this will look great on your CV.

It is true that for any new job, the more experience and skills you can offer the better. So, if you are new to yachting and want to get qualified before heading off, we can help you get started.

How do I become a Deckhand with no experience?

You don’t need to be a  Yachtmaster  or have worked on a yacht to become a Deckhand on a Superyacht. Most Superyacht crews don’t come from a boating background. Once onboard, the yacht’s crew will show you the ropes and what is expected.

However, any experience in water sports, diving, or on boats will help. Don’t worry if you haven’t worked in a practical role or been on boats.

Apart from the compulsory qualifications mentioned above, what is common among all crew is the desire to work outdoors in the sunshine.

What all Superyachts look for is a  good attitude , a desire to work hard, and to be part of a team. If you have a good, positive attitude, then you can go far. Flying Fish can provide all the qualifications and skills you need to get going; all we ask is for you to provide bring a good work ethic and a positive attitude.

What does a Deckhand actually do?

Well, that’s hard to explain in just one article! All crew work, eat and sleep onboard, the yacht will become your home, the crew your family.

The yacht will look after you, the chef cooks all your meals while onboard. Your contract will specify your duties, salary, working hours, and holiday entitlement. The yacht will supply your uniform and provide further training if necessary.

The role of a Deckhand will vary from yacht to yacht, depending on the size, how many crew, whether it is private or charter, the owner, Captain, and many other factors. However, the deck team’s main role is the cleaning and maintenance of the exterior of the yacht and its toys.

You will be tasked with washing the yacht, cleaning the windows, scrubbing the teak decks, and polishing the stainless. When the guests are onboard you may drive the tenders, and jet-skis, help with water sports activities, and even time in the bridge on lookout duties.

What is a typical working day like as a Deckhand?

Your working day will typically start at 8:00am and finish at 6:00pm, usually six days a week. When on charter, or if the owners are onboard, your work hours will differ. Unsociable hours are common when guests are on board.

Do I live on board?

You will share a cabin with another Deckhand. The cabins are small but comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom. There is access to the internet via that yacht’s Wifi system, so you can keep in touch with friends and family at home.

How do I find work on a Superyacht?

There are three ways crew can find a job:

  • Most crew travel to Antibes, France, described as the hub of yachting in the Mediterranean. The Med season runs from March through to October.
  • Online, we talk a bit more about “going online” below.
  • Contacts. If you know somebody already working on a Superyacht, then it is possible to find work through their connections.

Almost everybody that is looking for a job on a Superyacht travels to Antibes, France. On arrival, crew tend to stay in a crew house, such as the  Crew Grapevine  used as a base to look for work.

If budget is a concern, then crew join forces and rent an Airbnb between them. The advantage of a crew house like the Crew Grapevine is that the owners (ex-yachties) actively help you find a job.

The way you find a job on a Superyacht is quite unique. From your base in Antibes, you would travel to other ports in the local area, walk the dock and chat with the crew working onboard to see if any positions are available.

Superyacht crew who have the evening off will go to the local bars to unwind. This is the perfect chance to get to know people working on Superyachts and build connections in the industry.

Go online to look for a work

All Superyacht recruitment agents post positions on their respective websites. Once qualified, new, or “green crew”, as they are known, would register with the agency and complete their registration form. You would then get in touch with the agent to start searching for that dream job.

The recruitment agent’s job is to match the right candidate for the job being advertised. There are many recruitments agents out there, we work closely with  YPI  a Superyacht recruitment agency based in the South of France.

A quick Google search for “ Superyacht Recruitment Agents ” will bring up a list.

Yotspot  is a very popular website that matches yachts with quality crew.

Facebook  is another medium that yachts use to post jobs. To keep up to date, is it worth joining a couple of the Superyacht Facebook groups. Yacht crew jobs and Palma yacht group are two examples.

How long does it take to find work on a Superyacht?

Over the 12 years we have been running our Superyacht Deckhand programme, most customers find a job between one and four weeks. We have had customers that have found a job in a day and others that have taken six weeks to find that perfect job.

The time it takes to find a job is down to you. You will need to be proactive, up early, and make sure you are at the front of the queue. From our experience, people who work hard and explore every opportunity will find a job quickly.

Every Captain or Officer that calls us for a reference asks the same question – does the candidate have a good attitude? You need to be hard-working, happy to work long hours, and used to mucking in. Have a can-do attitude and a willingness to go the extra mile to help your fellow crewmates.

When is the best time to look for work on a Superyacht?

Traditionally Superyachts recruit for the Mediterranean season  any time between February to May.  That being said, yachts recruit all year round. We have seen many graduates find work in July and August when the season is in full swing.

The next key recruitment period is between September and November as yachts prepare for the Caribbean season. Yachts will cross the Atlantic anytime between December and January to cruise the Caribbean or the US for the winter.

Superyacht crew who have had a busy Mediterranean season may decide to take the winter off, which leaves opportunities for new crew to enter the industry.

Can I make yachting a career?

Yes! Thousands of crew who start out as a Deckhand climb the career ladder, first qualifying as a Lead Deckhand, then onto Officer and finally Captain. Okay, that sounds simple, but many have achieved their dream of becoming a Captain of a large Superyacht.

Running a yacht is not easy and requires a lot of qualifications, time at sea, excellent communication and management skills, and a deep understanding of the yachting industry.

Below is the career pathway from Deckhand to Master (Captain). The good news is there is a structured pathway, so you know what skills and sea time are required.

How do I become a Superyacht Deckhand?

How Much Money Does A Deckhand On A Superyacht Make?

The average monthly payment for a deckhand is €2,500; however, it can range from €2,000 to €3,500. Most Superyacht payments are made in euros. The salary can depend on many factors, the main one being the yacht’s “crew” budget.

The owner or management firm will settle on a spending limit that the captain uses to hire a crew. Each yacht will have a unique budget, so the wages paid to the crew may differ slightly from yacht to yacht.

Additionally, whether you work on a private or charter yacht can affect your overall pay. It is customary for guests on a charter yacht to give the crew a tip; the standard amount is 10% of the charter cost. Superyacht chartering can cost between €250,000 and €1,000,000 per week.

For a week’s charter, tips are typically between €2,000 and €5,000, and they are distributed equally among the crew. Your monthly salary is supplemented by tips. More details are provided in our guide to superyacht salaries. The fact that you reside on the yacht means that your daily expenses are minimal.

Without Any Prior Experience, How Do I Become A Deckhand?

If you want to work as a Deckhand on a Superyacht, you don’t need to be a Yachtmaster or have any prior experience on a boat. The majority of Superyacht crews lack prior boating experience. When you get on board, the crew of the yacht will show you the ropes and go over expectations with you.

Any prior diving, boating, or watersports experience will be beneficial, though. You need not be concerned if you haven’t operated boats or worked in a practical capacity.

The desire to work outside in the sun is something that all crew members share, aside from the prerequisites mentioned above.

What all Superyachts look for is a good attitude , a desire to work hard, and to be part of a team. You can accomplish a lot if you have a good, upbeat attitude. All we ask is that you bring a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. Flying Fish can provide all the credentials and skills you need to get started.

How To Enter The Maritime Industry

On a big ship or boat, you can work as a deckhand even without any prior experience. However, anyone seeking a higher-level position in the maritime sector may need to enroll in a naval training program or submit an application for positions at the entry level.

Attend A Maritime Training School

You can acquire the knowledge and abilities required to begin a career as a deckhand on a merchant vessel or large ship by enrolling in a maritime training program. Your comprehension of maritime safety procedures will also improve as a result of the training. With the knowledge and skills required to move up the professional ladder, training can advance your career.

Professionals seeking positions on sizable ships, like container and cruise ships, are best served by maritime training programs. Skilled deckhands are also well-positioned to advance up the corporate ladder and become senior captains, engineers, and deck officers. Deckhands can choose from a variety of career paths, and there are specialized training programs to support you in achieving your professional objectives.

How To Become a Successful Deckhand On A Yacht

Learn About Deckhand Duties

Prior to looking for work as a deckhand, it is crucial to be aware of your obligations. A physically demanding job requiring perseverance and hard work is being a deckhand. Working on inland or large ship with experienced crew members will help you develop the skills necessary to be a successful deckhand. Deckhand responsibilities vary according to a vessel’s schedule and purpose. Deckhands are in charge of performing general maintenance, watching over the ship, operating the tender, and cleaning the vessel.

Understand The Structure Of The Deck

The youngest members of a deck crew are the deckhands. While learning from the more experienced crew members when they first start out, deckhands should be aware of their surroundings. Respect the more seasoned crew members and consistently carry out their requests to the best of your ability. Experts advise seeking clarification from others in order to ensure that you operate safely. Depending on the purpose and size of a yacht or ship, a deck’s structure varies. A deckhand employed on a small boat will never have the same responsibilities as one employed on a cruise or container ship.

Apply For Entry-level Positions

The simplest route to becoming a deckhand is to apply for maritime jobs that don’t need specialized training or licensing. In the marine industry, inland vessels are typically where unskilled workers are assigned to work. As a deckhand on an inland ship, you can learn more about the maritime industry without needing a license or certification. You can still advance in your career even if you aren’t employed by a container or cruise ship. The majority of deckhands who begin their careers working on inland vessels utilize their free time to gain experience and skills that will help them advance in their careers.

Obtain Certification

Obtaining the necessary certification is the next step after being aware of what it takes to be a deckhand. Once you possess the required documentation and certification, you will be eligible for roles with high salaries and rankings. For instance, a deckhand needs a visa before going to maritime hubs for interviews. Being registered with crew agents will give you access to a variety of open positions in the marine industry, which is another essential step in becoming a deckhand. Having a large network of contacts in the maritime industry and having a good reputation are also requirements.

Look For Opportunities To Hone Your Skills

You can find a ton of information and training programs on the internet to help you become a successful deckhand. Additionally, you can learn from more seasoned deckhands by asking them for advice when you stray from the path. To establish a strong brand identity, always go above and beyond and seize every chance. Deckhands should conduct themselves in a professional manner as well, as every interaction, they have the potential to advance their career. Be ready for any opportunity that may arise. Recognize that you’ll play challenging roles where you can either stand out or come off as a newbie. On the other hand, be open to learning and learn how to work with others.

What Credentials Do I Need To Be A Deckhand?

When it comes to credentials and experience, three factors should be taken into account. The first two are required, but the third is up to you and your past employment history and work experience.

  • All crew members who work at sea are required to have an ENG 1 medical. Before completing Step 2, we advise that if you are considering working as a Superyacht Deckhand, you complete the ENG1 medical.
  • All crew members must complete STCW Basic Safety Training in order to be prepared for emergencies at sea. A six-day course called STCW covers topics like first aid, firefighting (which is a lot of fun), and health, safety, and security at sea.
  • Get some experience; we’ll explain more about this below; however, you don’t need to have prior yachting experience to work on a superyacht. However, having a foundational understanding is helpful. Yachts want to know that you are a hard worker, enjoy the outdoors, and get along well with others. If you have experience in any of the following fields, to name a few: hospitality, engineering, carpentry, electrical work, teaching water sports, or divemastership, your resume will look fantastic.

It is true that the more experience and skills you can bring to a new job, the better. In other words, if you’re new to yachting and want to become qualified before leaving, we can help you get started.

Working Conditions For A Deckhand

Depending on the type of ship a deckhand is working aboard, their responsibilities can vary. For instance, a deckhand working on a fishing boat might need to know how to use scuba gear, lines, and pots. Transportation or recreational vessel may need to provide hospitality services like bartending, table setting, and cabin attendant care. Deckhands are able to work in any weather and spend a lot of time at sea. You might have to work irregular hours and in confined spaces as a deckhand. Deckhands who are working under pressure may only get four hours of sleep and downtime.

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

A man in a crew member suit stands behind a bar and tends to flowers in a vase.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

How to Get a Deckhand Job on a Superyacht?

Traveling then working on a Superyacht could be perfect career for you. It’s no surprise that Super yachts spend all of their time in the sunny parts of the world. Generally, yachts spend the summer cruising around the Mediterranean and winter in the Caribbean.

The competition for deckhand jobs is getting fierce. There are some essential crew training certificates you must hold before you can get a deckhand job on a luxury yacht are:

1. STCW Basic Training

The STCW stands for  Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping.  The STCW’2010, previously referred to as STCW’95, forms part of the basic safety training and is a compulsory requirement for any seafarer in order to be eligible for employment at sea. The STCW 2010 has replaced STCW 95 and is the new code that all seafarers working on board commercial vessels must adhere to should they are want to work at sea.

If you are planning on joining the super yacht industry to look for a yacht job as a stewardess, deckhand, engineer or chef, you will need to complete this STCW course.

Who did Jared Woodin get fired on Below Deck Season 11, Episode 7?

As soon as Season 11 began, Captain Kerry recognized that Jared wasn't cut out to be the Bosun of a mega yacht. After giving Jared a few charters to see if he could improve during dockings and with his communication, Kerry decided to fire the Connecticut native.

Captain Kerry told Jared, "The way that you're treating these guys is not acceptable, and we've had discussions, and I've tried to guide you, I've shown you compassion. But, you've got sh-t going on, mate. You're your own worst enemy right now. You need to depart the vessel."

How Jared Woodin Reacted to Getting Fired

Once Kerry fired Jared, the dad of one seemed surprised. "I'm getting the boot?" Jared asked, and Kerry confirmed that was the case. "Really?"

Kerry noted that Jared did "have a lot going for [him]," but that  St. David  wasn't the right place for him.

"Take this time and work on yourself," Kerry said. "Me keeping you here is a disservice to you."

Jared ultimately agreed with that assessment in an interview on the episode.

"I thought I was in a good headspace coming in to this, [but] I'm really not. And, as much as I would like to be, I'm just lying to myself," he said. "Although the situation sucks, I actually really do feel a little bit lighter."

Why did cat baugh leave on below deck season 11.

Jared wasn't the only crew member who left St. David on Season 11, Episode 7. After expressing how it was hard for her to find her place amongst the rest of the yachties, stew Cat Baugh received a troubling phone call from a friend named Megan when she was in her cabin.

"I'm sorry, I know you can't talk, but she's not answering, and no one else is awake right now," Cat's friend said on the phone. "Do you have, like, a couple seconds? I'm freaking the f-ck out."

Cat didn't reveal what exactly the phone call was about, but she recognized that she needed to get back home.

"So, I got a call from my friend, Megan," Cat explained in an interview on the episode. "This is a situation I really can't talk about, but my friends are my family, so it feels really sh-tty not being able to be there for her."

Cat Baugh Hugs Captain Kerry as she leaves the yacht

After the charter guests arrived, Cat talked to her boss, Fraser Olender , about what she was feeling. He encouraged her to put her mental health first. Kerry did the same.

"My number one job is to take care of my crew and their health," Kerry said. "I'm well aware of mental health. She's got to go, now."

11 Things You Didn’t Know About Below Deck's Captain Kerry Titheradge

"I wish I could have stayed. But, the thing is, there's no way I could have," Cat concluded. "This is too much. I need to be with the people [who] need me, and also, on this boat, I'm at a breaking point. I need to protect my mental health. It's like my support system is at home, not here."
