Beneteau Barracuda 7

The best fast fishing boats on the market

Fast Fishers - safe, open, good cruising range and ideal for Dry Stacking

If you love fishing and you want to make your trips safe, easier and as hassle-free as possible, then there is a huge range of Fast Fishing boats on the market.

Fast Fishers generally have an open configuration and a good walkaround designed to give you access to every corner of the deck. Add this to some clever features such as live bait-wells, plenty of dash space for electronics, and large fuel tanks for longer trips, then you've got the perfect set up for some great and fruitful fishing expeditions!

What's more, Plymouth is the perfect base to reach some of the best fishing spots in the Westcountry including Gara Point, Rame Head, Eddystone Reef and an abundance of reefs, deepwater spots and wrecks.

So which Fast Fisher is right for you? Take a look as we run down our top 5 all of which are suitable for berthing in our dry stack...

But don't forget - we love fishing and deal with boats day in, day out. So if you want more advice, just   get in touch   with our team!

Beneteau Barracuda 7

Beneteau Barracuda 7

A spacious wheelhouse, expansive views from the cockpit, sliding doors to create a larger stern deck, and a well-spaced walkaround. The Beneteau Barracuda 7 is an exemplary fast fisher with the luxury of a basic cabin, heads, cockpit table, shower and fridge making it equally comfortable for family trips.

This boat is also great for longer days with a good 200 litre fuel tank and a top speed of 34 knots. But cruising at 20-25 knots, you'll get a cruising range of over 120 miles.

For Sale - This Barracuda 7 is for sale from Boat Exchange in Plymouth for £64,104

Arvor 215As

Arvor 215/AS

This no-frills boat is an outstanding and reliable inboard fast fisher, and the number already found in our Drystack pays testament to this.

There's ample space/access around the cockpit and up to the transom, while the self-draining deck and non-slip finish is a must-have for all keen anglers. The L-shaped deck and offset wheelhouse is a clever design allowing for a spacious fishing area with plenty of room for 3-4 anglers.

Her inboard diesel engine and hydraulic steering means she handles extremely easily and, as with all Arvor models, the overall quality is second-to-none. And, with a comfortable cruising speed of 18-22 knots, she is extremely economical as Fast Fishers go.

For Sale - This Arvor 215AS Cummins is for sale from BoatsandOutboards4Sale for £18,750

Merry Fisher Marlin 795

Merry Fisher 795 Marlin

A true hybrid and nicknamed the '4x4 of the sea'. From Jeanneau, one of the world's biggest boatbuilders, the Merry Fisher brand is trusted and popular around the world.

The Marlin model is an adaptation of the popular 795 cruiser. As a result, the internal space is sacrificed for a bigger walkaround (including proper space on the foredeck) and a larger aft deck helped by a significant beam of 2.8m.

The three sliding doors on the wheelhouse allow fast access around the deck and create welcome inside-outside space, with the skylight adding to this impression.

At 280 litres, the fuel capacity is probably the largest you'll find for a boat under 8m. This makes longer fishing trips far easier, especially when combined with the roomy cabin. Any windage is balanced by an efficient bow thruster ensuring manoeuvring is simple and intuitive.

For Sale - Plymouth company Trafford Yachts is the main Jeanneau agency for the South West. Visit www.traffordyachts.co.uk

Smartliner Fisher 23

Smartliner Fisher 23

The Polish-built Smartliner brand is a great value Fast Fisher and, as you'd expect, they're smart, reliable and functional (without being overly glamorous).

The dual pilot locations (one inside and one outside) is a niche in the Fast Fisher market but doesn't overly compromise deck space as you might expect.

The Smartliner 23 has ample walkaround space and solid guard rails for safety. The dual 75lr fuel tanks allow for a good cruising range, especially due to the Smartliner's lighter hull.

Overall, if you're a first time buyer or you just want to get out on the water, the Smartliner is a great choice -  great value for money, simple layout and easy to use. The full range are on display at Yacht Haven Quay, home to South West Yacht Brokers, Smartliner’s UK importer.

For Sale - This Smartliner Fisher 23 is for sale from South West Yacht Brokers for £17,900

Pilot 6

Pilot 6 Classic

Lightweight, durable and surprisingly nippy. The Plymouth-built Pilot range are great all-rounders and extremely attractive. Their simple and practical layouts make her suitable for families as well as great boats for keen anglers.

If your boating ambitions take you around every nook and creek of Plymouth's rivers, then the Pilot 6 Classic is the perfect inshore boat.

At 5.2m LOA, the Pilot is the smallest boat in our top 5 but this is by no means a negative. With a 50hp outboard, she will comfortably cruise at 18 knots with space on deck for 4-5 anglers.

Her size does mean you lose the walkaround deck feature but the generous aft cockpit provides ample space. Extremely seaworthy for her size, this boat is a prefect compromise between heading out to the reefs, and exploring further up river, taking full advantage of the lure of the Rivers Tamar, Lynher, Yealm, Erme and Avon – all on our doorstep here at the Drystack.

For Sale - New Pilot6 Classics are built by Plymouth-based Westport Marine, with on-the-water prices for under £20,000

Fasttrack programme.

fast track yachts plymouth

We are currently offering an alternative to the ‘FastTrack’ programs that you may see offered elsewhere. We have stopped encouraging people to do ordinary FastTrack training. It has a bad reputation, is not very much favoured by the RYA or their Examiners and it is extremely expensive.

As an alternative, we offer a flexible training schedule which can be worked around your requirements. We run all the elements of FastTrack training throughout the year. This gives you the option to choose which courses you do and when… and to gather sea miles by jumping on deliveries as they crop up, anywhere anytime… That way you get experience in different waters with different people on widely different boats… often at no cost. This is by far the best way of gaining quality sea miles and is how the RYA intended it to be.

The flexible training programs also mean that you do not have to give up working for the duration of the training, you can train for a couple of weeks then go back to work for a couple of weeks, this can help to ease the pressure of finding work after you have completed the Yachtmaster.

We will build a concentrated training program around your current abilities and experience, which is left flexible so if an option for a delivery comes up you can take it, or you can go back to work. By making a program suited to your needs we can keep the costs down and the overall cost would be on average half that of a traditional FastTrack program.

Please contact us for more information.

We hope that you can find the information you require on these pages, if you have any further questions, or require advice, please call us.

YACHTING; Fast Track Across the Ocean

By Barbara Lloyd

  • June 5, 1988

YACHTING; Fast Track Across the Ocean

The entry list for an upcoming ocean race from Plymouth, England, to Newport, R.I., reads like a who's who of solo yacht racing. It is a high-technology, bigger-is-better kind of event, in which competitors rely heavily on shoreside help.

More than 100 sailboats, both monohulls and multihulls from 25 to 60 feet, were scheduled to leave Plymouth today for the start of the 3,000-mile Carlsberg Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race.

The solo skippers from 14 countries include Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail around the world alone without stopping; John Martin, Francis Stokes, Bertie Reed, Jean Yves Terlain and Titouan Lamazou, veterans of the BOC solo round-the-world race; Bruno and Loick Peyron of France, brothers who are world-class multihull sailors, and Philippe Poupon, a Frenchman who in 1984 set the trans-Atlantic race record of 16 1/2 days. Six women are planning to compete, including Florence Arthaud of France, a champion multihull sailor. Feather-Light Trimaran

Of the 18 Americans who are racing, Philip Steggell, 35 years old, of Jamestown, R.I., appears to have the best chance to win. His boat, the 60-foot trimaran Sebago, is built of carbon fiber and epoxy to the maximum size allowed under the rules.

It is a spritely looking yacht, with three tapered hulls and arched crossbeams that make it look like a bird in flight. Sebago can reach speeds of 25 knots. But the boat's best feature is that it is feather-light, designed to move quickly in light winds. When the breeze dies, heavier boats tend to sail as if in a sea of molasses.

Sebago weighs about three tons, compared with six tons for many of the 60-foot multihulls. ''My boat is easily driven,'' Steggell said last week in a telephone interview from Plymouth. ''It sails better in light-to-moderate conditions. The heavier boats need more horsepower to push them through the water. They have to put up more sail, and that makes them harder to control.''

The mast on Sebago stands at 72 feet. Spirit of Apricot, a 60-foot trimaran sailed by Tony Bullimore of Britain, sports the tallest mast at 92 feet. Weather Updates

Steggell concedes that storms could damage or capsize his slender craft. He has asked Bob Rice, a meteorologist with Weather Services Corporation in Bedford, Mass., for daily weather updates. Rice is a veteran forecaster, having guided the solo sailor Dodge Morgan on his record nonstop voyage around the world in 1986, as well as numerous balloon adventurers. Steggell will depend on Bill Biewenga, his shoreside manager in Newport, to convert Rice's reports into tactical strategy.

Most of the skippers rely on personnel ashore to feed them data by radio. Several of the French competitors are known to depend on sophisticated computer simulations from land.

Besides the largest boats, which have the best overall chance of winning, there are several highly competitive multihulls in the race. Among them is Holsten Ocean Surfer, a 40-foot trimaran designed by Dick Newick of Vineyard Haven, Mass. The boat is being sailed by Mark Rudiger, 34, from Sausalito, Calif.

Newick's trimaran, Moxie, won the trans-Atlantic race in 1980. The competition, sailed every four years, is being sponsored this year for the first time by Carlsberg, the Danish brewery.

More than 80 boats are expected to compete today in the third Annual Mayor's Cup Sail Race, a regatta on Long Island Sound. The 10- to 15-mile race is scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. at the R-32 buoy south of Stamford, Conn. The amateur event is being sponsored by the Halloween Yacht Club of Stamford, the city of Stamford and the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company. . . . Varuna, the 26-foot sloop sailed around the world by 21-year-old Tania Aebi of New York, is being put up for auction. The boat will be on display June 10-12 at the Museum of Yachting in Newport, and offered for sale that weekend at an auction for yachts and yachting artifacts organized by Guernsey's. Aebi was married Wednesday in Newport to Olivier Berner, the 34-year-old Swiss sailor she met during her two-year trip. Berner was sailing a 31-foot sloop, Akka, in the South Pacific. . . . Phocea, the 237-foot schooner that left South Street Seaport on May 13 for an attempt at a trans-Atlantic record, returned to New York because of light wind. The owner, Bernard Tapie of France, plans to try again next month.

Bridge in Baltimore collapses after apparent impact with cargo ship

CCTV video and marine tracking data shows the Dali container ship lose power, adjust its course and start smoking before hitting the Baltimore bridge.

The Singapore-flagged container ship left the Port of Baltimore at around 12.45am local time. Its destination was Colombo in Sri Lanka.

In just over four minutes, the vessel changes course, loses power, starts smoking and hits the Baltimore bridge.

As the Dali approaches the Francis Scott Key Bridge at 1.24:32am local time it appears to lose power for around 60 seconds.

Around the same time, ship tracking data on MarineTraffic shows the Dali alter course as it approaches the bridge.

Its highest registered speed between the port and the bridge is 8.7 knots, it starts to slow down around 1km from the bridge. Its last registered speed is 7.6 knots between 100m and 200m from the bridge.

Just over a minute after appearing to lose power the ship starts producing black smoke.

The lights go out for a second time just over two minutes before it hits the bridge.

According to the timings on the CCTV, the ship hits the bridge at 1.28:44am. Four seconds later the bridge collapses.

The evidence appears to tally with a report from ABC News in the US which has cited unclassified intelligence that the container ship lost propulsion as it was leaving port and crew notified officials they had lost control.

'There should be no room for one-person errors'

A maritime safety expert says the "most likely" cause of the crash was a failure in the ship's machinery.

David McFarlane, director of Maritime Risk and Safety Consultants Ltd, has told Sky News: "The first thing that springs to my mind is: was there a sudden fault with the ship's engines or the steering gear? The other, of course, is: was there a navigational error?"

Mr McFarlane says a human error was less likely because of the number of people who would have been on duty.

He adds: "There should be no room for one-person errors because one of the other people should jump in and say 'hang on...'

"The most likely cause of this is a failure in machinery or steering gear, but we just won't know until the authorities have been on board. And even then, they're unlikely to say what's been going on for some considerable time."

More than 10 boats help rescue

According to MarineTraffic data, the first ship to arrive around 10 minutes later is a tug Eric Mcallister. It helped the 300-metre container ship leave the port.

It is joined by a second tug Bridget Mcallister and a search and rescue vessel around 25 minutes after the bridge is hit.

More than 10 boats are now involved in the rescue.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows a police helicopter arriving at 2.04am local time. A coastguard helicopter comes from Atlantic City and arrives at 4.42am.

Vessel involved in separate incident in 2016

The Singapore-flagged ship was previously involved in a minor incident when it hit a quay at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, according to maritime accident site Shipwrecklog.

The vessel was reportedly damaged in the incident, but there were no injuries or pollution issues reported.
