The most popular Marina in Malta

The 720 berth Msida and Ta’ Xbiex Marina, operated by Creek Developments Plc, can handle pleasure yachts of up to 22m in length. Long sought-after for the convenient central location and the shelter afforded from the prevailing North-Westerly winds, the marina is also naturally protected from other wind directions, while the breakwater protects against a North-Easterly swell.

Msida Marina

From cruiserswiki.

Msida Marina, including its protective breakwater, is generally the best place to keep a yacht in Valletta's Marsamxett harbour in terms of being the most sheltered. However like most of Malta's yachting berthing facilities it is usually crowded and berths may be hard to come by.

In early 2011 the marina was taken over by a private company, Creek Developments, having previously been run by the Malta Maritime Authority. Creek Developments is aiming to carry out a major refurbishment of the facilities including replacing of aging pontoons and installation of shower and toilet facilities. Work on replacing the pontoons started in April 2012. Creek Developments have an office midway along the northern side of the marina, just to the east of the Slipway Bar.

There are laid moorings to the pontoons and breakwater.

In Marsamxett harbour between Valletta and Sliema. Protected by Msida breakwater.

Warning: When the NE wind blows, the dreaded Gregale , some swell finds its way into the marina, though notably less than elsewhere in Marsamxett Harbour. If leaving a boat unattended, extra lines may be required, especially if moored to the inside of the breakwater where it may be advisable to leave extra space between the boat and breakwater.

Berth reservation

The marina is very crowded and popular. It is best to make contact plenty of time before arrival. Yachts should email the marina in advance stating their dimensions and the period a berth will be required for. When out of season, yachts generally moor on the inside of the breakwater.

msida yacht marina

The approaches are straight forward, however yachts should watch out for numerous day tripper boats operating around the harbour.

Creek Developments have a Berthing Master working in the marina.

  • Laid ground lines are tailed to the pontoons. On the new pontoons being installed in 2012, two lines are provided per berth. These new lines are long enough to double as mooring lines to the pontoons.
  • Water outlets on the pontoons
  • 230 volt electricity outlets on the pontoons
  • Toilets and showers are available behind the marina office

Other nearby facilities

  • Fuel - There is a public fuel boat outside the marina
  • Provisions - Gala supermarket is on the corner of Triq Testaferrata and Mitrovitch above the car show room. About 10 minutes walk. Gala provide a delivery service for yachts
  • Laundry - There is a laundry on Triq Testaferrat between the Gala supemarket and the Sliema waterfront.
  • Banks - Bank of Valletta have two branches on the Sliema water front.
  • Restaurants - Close to the root of the Msida breakwater are the Black Pearl, Guze, and Errera restaurants. Other bars, cafes and restaurants will be found in the area.
  • Chandleries - Whites Sails and Gauchi Borda have shops on the northern side of the marina not far from the marina office. Additional chandleries will be found on the Sliema side of Ta'Xbiex Seafront and on Triq Testaferrata.

  • Sy Swivel spent the winter month in Msida Marina with the crew living aboard. The newly installed facilities, friendly and helpful marina staff and, for Malta, morderate prices let us only recommend the marina for wintering in Malta. Advantages: nearby city and local transport, altough it might not be the quietest place on the island. -- Sy Swivel

A Brief History

msida yacht marina

msida yacht marina

Msida is a harbour town in the Central Region of Malta with a population of 8,545 (March 2014).  The town is located just west of Valletta on the northeast coast of Malta. The town enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry, sunny summers and short, cool winters.

The neighbouring towns of Msida are Ta’ Xbiex, Gżira, San Ġwann, Birkirkara, Santa Venera, Ħamrun and Pietà. Msida is an important town for all travellers as many of the country’s bus routes pass through it.

The patron saint of Msida is Saint Joseph while the protector is The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For a week and a half in July, the town celebrates the feast of St. Joseph. The feast of Msida is also famous for its traditional game il-Ġostra. Places of interest are the Yacht Marina, Seaside with traditional fishing boats, the University of Malta and the different gardens: the playing field at 5 ta’ Ottubru Square, the garden in front of the Parish Church and the playing field at Ballijju Guttenberg street in Swatar.

Its name comes from an Arabic word meaning “a fisherman’s dwelling”. However, it could also be derived from the word ‘Omm Sidna’ meaning ‘The Mother of Our Lord’ since there could have been a small chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

Msida was previously an old fishing village. Although it is now more urbanised, some fishermen still operate in the village.

Msida became a parish in 1867. Then the settlement was centred on the hovels located inward at Valley Road, and some nearby ancillary roads and pathways which led up to the quaint district of Villambrosa. This status did not last long however, as a new parish Ħamrun was hived off in 1881. Today the lowest part of Villambrosa Street remains a silent reminder of Msida’s jurisdiction in this area. Msida would also eventually see parts of its territory lost to new parishes at Santa Venera in 1918, Pietà in 1968 and Ta’ Xbiex in 1969.

Its population, which at one time numbered 11,500, thus also dwindled to a mere 6,000. However, the recent aforementioned demands as well as residential developments in the outlying suburb of Swatar, have now seen an increase to more than 8500 inhabitants. Swatar also hosts St. Martin’s College, a private secondary school.

This small Mediterranean gem Malta is a country that can satisfy the taste of every tourist – from beautiful beaches and crystal waters through rural areas and craft villages to lively spots and party centers. Suppose you are planning a holiday in Malta. In that case, you will definitely visit places like Valletta, St. Julians, Mdina, Gozo, or Blue Lagoon . But there are some other towns worth visiting for a local experience or a short break. One of these places is Ta’Xbiex , where you can watch some of the best sunrises on the island. In the post below, we will guide you on what to do in Ta’Xbiex and all you need to know for a short seaside break here.

Table of Contents

Quick information about Ta’Xbiex

Ta’ Xbiex is a city in the central region of Malta located inside Marsamxett Harbour between Msida and Gzira and opposite Valletta. There are two opinions about the name . First, the name Ta’ Xbiex (Maltese pronunciation: [tɐ ˈʃbɪːʃ]) comes from the word ‘tbexbix,’ which means dawn since there are spectacular sunrise views over Valletta here. Second, others connect it to the fishing nets’ Xbiek’ typical for this former fishing village developed into a residential and commercial town.

Ta’ Xbiex is mainly known for some magnificent villas and embassies here – Egypt, Italy, France, Greece, British High Commission, Australian High Commission. There are also different boat supplies shops, insurance companies, law firms, auditing, and accounting firms. The area of Ta’Xbiex is considered one of the most beautiful parts to live in Malta.

Note :  The noble “Villa Bel-Air” is the residence of the Italian Ambassador in Malta.

How to get to Ta’Xbiex

With public transport – take bus 15 from Valletta, and you will get to the promenade of Ta’Xbiex. Other lines to the town are 13, 14, 16, 35, 233, but you will have to walk for a while to get to the marina.

More information about how to get around Malta you can find in our article here .

What to do in Ta’Xbiex

You don’t need to wonder what to do in Ta’ Xbiex. It is a small place, and you can easily explore it within few hours on foot. Usually, it is a quick stop before heading to the neighboring cities. You can stop here for a quick snack and a little break.

Take a walk along the Ta’ Xbiex promenade

Walk along the promenade from the beautiful Gzira gardens to the Msida Yacht Marina and admire the impressive mansions on the right and the large boats on the left. Sit for a while on the colored benches on the pier of Ta’Xbiex and enjoy the gorgeous view of Valletta and Floriana’s bastions. We recommend doing this early in the morning or by sunset. It is a bit difficult to find a shadow spot in the area, which is very important during the hot summer days in Malta.

At the moment, I live in Gzira, and Ta’Xbiex is a place I love to walk to. I prefer morning walks before noon when it is still not so hot. The area is pleasant and usually not busy. You can see only a few locals swimming here or people going to their yachts for a day trip around the island.

You can also take a boat cruise and see this beautiful area during your tour.

Taxbiex view

Yacht marina to dock your boat

The town has two marinas on both sides – the Msida yacht marina and the Manoel Island yacht marina . Here, you can see traditional fishing boats, many sailing boats, and bigger yachts. The seashore is used mainly by locals to take a cooling morning bath during sunrise. Waters are safe to swim surrounded by a rocky beach. Just take your swimsuit and go to the beach.

Visit the Ta’Xbiex Parish Church

Visit the Church (1958) dedicated to St. John of the Cross (the patron saint of Ta’ Xbiex) and decorated in Basilical and Roman style. Inside there is a unique huge Crucifix (420cm / 240cm). This cross may be the largest reproduction of its kind, and the only silhouette cross in the world inscribed ‘Where there is no love, put love, and you will reap love.’

Note:  Do you know that Malta has more than 365 churches?! If you want to know more about this Mediterranean country, read our travel guide to Malta.

Where to eat in Ta’Xbiex

Ta’Xbiex is a small area, but there are plenty of good restaurants, especially along the coast, offering delicious Mediterranean dishes and spectacular harbor views.

-Ta’Xbiex Waterpolo Club Restaurant

It was established in the 1940s on a property used as a polling station, police headquarters, and farm. Now, there is a beautiful restaurant combining Sicilian & Italian cuisine. We really love the seafood ideas on the menu (Risotto ai Frutti di Mare).

-The Galley Restaurant

It is a lovely seaside restaurant with a unique view of Valletta, offering modern Mediterranean cuisine at reasonable prices. As I love seafood, the deep-fried calamari is something I recommend.

-Black Pearl Restaurant

A unique attraction on the Maltese islands is a century-old wooden schooner home to a fantastic restaurant – The Black Pearl. There is an a la carte restaurant on the upper deck, offering stunning views of Valletta and the harbor and a pub on the lower deck.

Taxbiex Black pearl

Note: The Black Pearl was built in Sweden in 1909 and is one of the last surviving wooden trading schooners. She was used for trading missions to remote areas of Norway and Sweden. In 1976 while traveling through the Suez Canal, there is a fire in the engine room. The ship managed to sail to Marsamxett harbor in Malta, where she sank. In 1979, the schooner was restored. After that, the Black Pearl was captured in the movie ‘Popeye’ made in Malta. That was before she sank again in a storm in 1981. She was brought back to the surface and perched on the quayside of Ta’ Xbiex. So, in 1987 a new restaurant and a bar were opened – Black Pearl.

 -Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia is another restaurant where you can watch Valletta’s reflection in the water. We highly recommend it – big portions, fantastic Mediterranean dishes, and good value for money.

mamma mia

If you don’t have much time and would like just to bite something, Avotaco is your place. Fresh and delicious traditional Mexican food with also vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

Accommodation in Ta’Xbiex

If you decide to stay in a hotel in Ta’Xbiex, check the accommodation options on Booking or Airbnb – our two biggest ‘friends’ when traveling. But if you are in Malta only for few days, we suggest staying in another area. So, you will be closer to the main sightseeing points and tourist spots on the island.

So, would you visit Ta’Xbiex for a short break on your journey around Malta?

Are you thinking of staying in Msida for your Malta trip? Wondering if it’s a must-visit? You’re in the right spot. I moved to Malta in 2011. My first home was in Msida. I know it well. This guide is packed with local tips. Let’s dive into what makes Msida a great choice.

Table of Contents

About Msida: Discovering Its Location, Historical Roots and Traditions

Msida, located in Malta’s Central Region, offers more than scenic views. With a population of about 10,000, it lies near Valletta and enjoys warm, sunny summers.

Surrounded by Ta’ Xbiex , Gzira , Pieta and other towns, Msida is a vital hub. Its location makes it a key stop, as many bus routes crisscross through, connecting travellers to the rest of Malta. Furthermore, Msida houses the University of Malta, a Mater Dei Hospital and a Junior College in the nearby town called Pieta.

The town’s spirit shines in July with the St. Joseph’s feast, featuring il-Ġostra, where participants climb a greased pole to catch a flat attached at the end of it.

Once a small fishing village, Msida has evolved into a lively urban area, yet some fishermen still preserve the old ways. This transformation since becoming a parish in 1867 mirrors Malta’s dynamic history.

Is Msida the Right Choice for Your Holiday Stay?

Msida might not be my first choice for a stay in Malta, mainly due to its limited attractions and busy traffic. However, if proximity to Valletta and effi cient public transport are your priorities, it’s a viable option. Plus, its affordability is a significant advantage for budget watchers.

Affordable accommodation: Msida stands out for its affordability. You’ll find a range of budget-friendly accommodations, from apartments to modest hotels, making it an excellent choice for cost-conscious travellers.

Efficient transport network: Travelling around Malta from Msida is easy thanks to the efficient bus system. With many routes passing through, it’s a convenient base for exploring the island.

Various dining options: Msida offers a variety of dining experiences. Whether you’re craving local Maltese cuisine or international flavours, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Beautiful marina and promenade for walks: The town’s marina is a highlight, offering relaxing walks. You can stroll along the coast, enjoying a scenic route that extends 7 k m to St. Julians .

Msida Malta - Seaside

Potential Drawbacks

While Msida has many advantages, it may not be the right fit for everyone. Here are some aspects to consider before choosing the right place for your stay:

Risk of flooding : In rainy weather, from October to March, Msida’s lower valley area is prone to flooding, which can disrupt travel plans.

Lack of luxury accommodation: Those seeking upscale or luxury stays might find Msida’s options limited, as the town primarily offers budget-friendly holiday apartments.

Absence of beaches: While Msida has no beach, neighbouring Ta’Xbiex offers a rocky coastline (click here for location). If sandy beach-side accommodation is a priority, this might be a drawback.

Limited parking: Parking in Msida can be challenging, with limited availability. This can be particularly inconvenient for visitors planning to rent a car.

No nightlife: Msida is not known for its nightlife, offering calm, quiet evenings instead. If you’re looking for vibrant night activities or clubs, St. Julians, just a short journey away, is the go-to destination for nightlife in Malta.

Is Msida Worth a Visit During Your Malta Holiday?

If you enjoy long walks and marina strolls, Msida might be a pleasant stop. Walking along the marina and watching yachts is r elaxing. You can easily reach Msida marina by foot from nearby towns like St. Julians , Sliema , Gzira , or Ta’Xbiex .

Msida Malta - Marina at Night

Just a short walk from Msida there is Msida Bastion Cemetery and Historic Garden. This place is a hidden treasure. Run by volunteers, it’s a unique and affordable attraction at only €2 per entry.

Open until noon, it’s a peaceful spot steeped in history. Once a cemetery, it now offers a quiet glimpse into Malta’s past. It’s perfect for those who love serene, historical settings.

However, if your stay in Malta is brief, you might want to skip Msida. Other Malta’s must-see places might be more rewarding.

Here, I’ve compiled a list of eateries I tried and recommend.

Busy Bee : This café is a must-visit. Their ricotta qassata is a must. It’s perfect after a long walk. They offer many traditional Maltese pastries. If you like sweets, their cannoli with ricotta is a delight.

Kebab Factory : For a casual meal, try Kebab Factory’s kebabs and Turkish breakfast. Always fresh and tasty.

Msida Malta - Turkish Breakfast at Kebab Factory

Mamma Mia : Known for generous pizzas and pasta dishes, Mamma Mia is a local’s favourite restaurant. It’s often busy, so booking ahead is wise.

Tikka’s Thai : For authentic Thai cuisine, Tikka Thai is the place. Their curries and stir-fries are fresh and full of flavour. Try the Thai curry with prawns. It’s my favourite. This is a small and casual restaurant. I prefer take-out and eating next to the sea.

Msida Malta - Tikka's Thai restaurant

Avotaco : Craving Mexican? Avotaco serves tasty tacos and burritos, combining quick service with quality.

Shakinah : This restaurant offers modern Indian dishes. It’s a popular choice for adventurous culinary experiences.

Msida Malta - Indian Foot at Coastal Flavours

Coffee Circus Porto:  This café is a must-visit for coffee lovers, renowned for serving the best coffees in Malta. It’s not just the coffee that draws the crowds, but also the warm, friendly staff, homemade desserts and the café’s unique décor.

Comparing Msida with Other Malta Destinations

Marsaskala is a quiet fishing village, great for families. It has playgrounds and small beaches. Perfect for a peaceful stay, especially in winter.

Sliema bustles with shops and cafes. It’s known for its rocky beach and international community. Many offices are located here. It’s ideal for shopping and dining by the sea.

Naxxar shows traditional Malta. It’s quiet and in the island’s centre, without beach access. It has old houses to stay in, great for history lovers.

Buggiba attracts many tourists. It has beaches and nightlife but it can get crowded. It’s not as laid-back as Msida and has many resorts.

St. Julian’s is lively, especially at night. It has many 5-star hotels but it can be busy and noisy. A top nightlife spot.

Mellieha offers the most beautiful beaches in Malta such as Ghadira Beach , Golden Bay, Paradise Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Beach . It’s less connected than Msida and not ideal for sightseeing without a car. Traffic can be tough.

Rabat is near Mdina, rich in culture. You can stay in beautiful old palazzos. It’s quieter than Msida and great for history buffs.

Valletta is a UNESCO site, busy and historic. It has many restaurants and luxury boutique hotels.

Ta’ Xbiex Marina

For countless years in the 1950s a vast amount battleships were berthed in the Msida and Ta’ Xbiex marina. From the1960s right up until today, Ta’ Xbiex hosts many private boats with people from all nationalities making this location their berthing home for short as well as long stays.

The Msida and Ta’ Xbiex Marinas – many times referred to as the Sliema Marina –  form the largest marina in Malta. These Marinas together provide mooring facilities for more than 700 boats on 15 serviced pontoons. It is  located inside Marsamxett Harbour, which makes it safe and well sheltered, as well as conveniently central.

The Ta’ Xbiex Marina is operated by Creek Developments Plc, which embarked upon a project to refurbish the facilities, including replacing of aging pontoons and installation of shower and toilet facilities. Marina facilities include water outlets on the pontoons and 230 volt electricity outlets on the pontoons.

Visitors may proceed directly to berth in any vacant guest berth on the breakwater. If no guest berths are vacant, the yacht may not enter the Marina until permission has been granted by the Marina Office. For this reason we suggest that you contact us and we will take care of all your berthing requirements. Our experience and contacts will make sure your berthing exprience is smooth and hassle-free.

Due to its stratic location, the marina can handle pleasure yachts of up to 22m in length. Long sought-after for the convenient central location and the shelter afforded from the prevailing North-Westerly winds, the marina is also naturally protected from other wind directions, while the breakwater protects against a North-Easterly swell.

Ta’ Xbiex Marina Co-ordinates: 35° 53.75′ North – 014° 30.0′ East

Malta the perfect place to charter a yacht and explore the mediterranean coast, msida yacht marina © viewingmalta.com.

New York, Aug. 12, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- There is no better and safer way to explore the beautiful Mediterranean coast than with a private yacht charter, starting in Malta! The Maltese archipelago, with three main islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino, is a hub for luxury yacht charters.

The Grand Harbour Marina is located in the heart of Valletta, Malta’s Historic home port, it’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A great place to start a yachting vacation, Valletta, the 2018 European Capital of Culture, is a vibrant city with a mix of historic sites, outdoor restaurants, and a thriving nightlife

Exploring the Maltese islands by yacht is like sailing through 7000 years of history. With approximately 122 miles of Coastline, Malta’s clear blue sea allows guests to enjoy beautiful secluded beaches, an abundance of reefs, stunning caverns, and caves. Malta is also known as one of the world’s top diving destinations, with historic sunken treasures to explore. One can set off early from Valletta, passing the Three Cities and its historic fortifications, admire the rugged cliffs as the yacht sails to the sister islands of Gozo and Comino. Not to be missed in Gozo are the Ġgantija temples, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Comino, yachters can enjoy swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon. There are also several marinas to choose from on the Maltese Islands such as Msida Yacht Marina, Mgarr Harbour, and Vittoriosa Yacht Marina. Or even better, the Captain can find a secluded cove and drop anchor.

Yacht Charter Safety

Yacht charter companies are going through great lengths to ensure that their yachts are entirely safe. The yachts have upgraded their current cleaning and hygiene regimes and are putting new protocols into place to ensure the health and safety of both charter guests and their crews. These protocols include extending turnaround times between charters to allow for an extensive cleaning, regularly testing crew, and isolating rotating crew ashore before they rejoin the boat. Since July 15, all international flight restrictions have been lifted in Malta. The list of destinations that have been approved can be found here .

The Health Authorities have advised that as from July 1st, crew changes to and from Malta will be permitted with respect to persons, which includes crew members, traveling from the list of countries as listed in the Travel Ban Order. Dr. Alison Vassallo, Chairperson of the Yachting Services Business Section, said that “The fact that Malta has achieved international praise for its response in curtailing the virus has meant that we are now in a position to welcome yachts back to our shores while ensuring compliance with the preventive measures recommended by the Authorities”.

Safety Measures for Tourists

Malta has produced an online brochure , which outlines all the safety measures and procedures that the Maltese government has put into place for all hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs, beaches based on social distancing and testing.

About Malta

The sunny islands of Malta, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, are home to a most remarkable concentration of intact built heritage, including the highest density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in any nation-state anywhere. Valletta built by the proud Knights of St. John is one of the UNESCO sights and the European Capital of Culture for 2018. Malta's patrimony in stone ranges from the oldest free-standing stone architecture in the world, to one of the British Empire's most formidable defensive systems, and includes a rich mix of domestic, religious and military architecture from the ancient, medieval and early modern periods. With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife, and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.
