Five sea cadets had to be rescued by Lyme Regis RNLI after their yacht ran aground on a beach.

The teenagers, along with two adults, were on board the 35-foot TS Vigilant when it broke free from its mooring off Lyme Regis harbour.

It drifted towards the shore, running aground on the beach near Lucy’s Ledge in Lyme Regis.

The lifeboat crew were called out to the vessel and transferred the teenagers to the lifeboat station.

The RNLI volunteers then returned to the scene and secured a line before towing the yacht back to a mooring.

Speaking to the Mid Week Herald , helm Tim Edwards said: “I was pleased we were able to get the teenagers to safety of the lifeboat station and then recover the casualty vessel from trouble. The lifeboat crew performed really well and the all the training we do was put to good use!”

Edwards also had special praise for one of the crew – Tom Wallis.

“I brought the lifeboat alongside the grounded yacht in pitch darkness. Tom went aboard the yacht to reassure the youngsters and the two adult crew members,” continued the Lyme Regis helm.

“He then helped all seven people to board our lifeboat, which was quite an exercise in almost total darkness. Later Tom stayed aboard the yacht to assist as we re-floated it and towed it to safety,” added Edwards.

That looks like a Nicholson 43. What a shame. Hope she can be refloated with little damage.

That's horrible. It was breezy today.

Very sad.

Lets hope the crew return after their ice cream, there is little damage and the scratches on the hull buff out. Conditions look calm. I wonder who owns the mooring? From memory it is too far inshore to be a visitor mooring.

They are tough yachts and it looks calm. Tides heights are increasing so she will not be neaped and should float off soon. It would be worth doing some digging around the keel to ensure she gets off before the easterly winds on Thursday and Friday. A kedge anchor to the spinnaker halyard should heel her enough to get off easily. I hope there is minimal damage.

9 Best Beaches in Lyme Regis, Dorset

Written by Bryan Dearsley Jul 12, 2022

Boasting some of the most stunning coastal scenery in England, the small seaside town of Lyme Regis is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Dorset for those looking to spend time on the beach.

Set in the heart of England's Jurassic Coast , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses some 155 miles of coastline in Dorset and Devon, the town's many beaches are extremely attractive. In addition to featuring incredible views over the English Channel, you'll enjoy pleasing vistas of the surrounding rolling countryside, steep cliffs, and wide Lyme Bay.

There's a beach for everyone in Lyme Regis, with a mix of sand and shingle shores . Families are drawn to Front Beach, the town's main beach, for its soft sand and shallow waters. Adventure seekers tend to head a little further afield, taking their kayaks or paddleboards to the usually quieter Monmouth and East Cliff beaches to the west and east of the town, respectively.

Whatever your preferences, you'll find the perfect seaside escape on our list of the top beaches in Lyme Regis, Dorset.

1. Front Beach

2. sandy beach, 3. monmouth beach, 4. east cliff beach, 5. church cliff beach, 6. the cobb lower walkway beach, 7. the spittles, 8. charmouth west beach, 9. charmouth east beach, map of beaches in lyme regis, dorset.

Kayaks on Front Beach

Front Beach is the first Lyme Regis beach you'll see if you stroll along Marine Parade from the town center. A mix of pebbles and sand sections that are exposed at low tide, this popular attraction is the largest of the town's main beaches and stretches from the easternmost seawall to one that protects the beach nearer the famous Cobb and the town's historic harbor.

These seawalls make the beach perfect for families , ensuring it's safe for swimming and paddling. The presence of lifeguards and a nearby lifeboat facility add another level of security for bathers, especially those traveling with kids.

Front Beach

In addition to beach showers and restrooms , amenities include snack and refreshment vendors, as well as beach matting, allowing water access for those with mobility concerns. Beach wheelchairs, as well as one that floats, are also available. The town also rents out the colorful beach huts lining the promenade by the day or week.

Numerous water-based activities can also be enjoyed here. Popular things to do include sea kayaking and canoeing, snorkeling and diving, surfing, waterskiing, windsurfing, and fishing. Dogs are not permitted during the spring and summer months.

Address: Marine Parade, Lyme Regis, Dorset

Sandy Beach

Sandwiched between a seawall on one side and The Cobb's easternmost breakwater, Sandy Beach is a sheltered spot that's a favorite for families with toddlers . It's also a very clean beach, with its abundant soft sand raked regularly by the township to keep it litter free.

In addition to sunbathing and swimming, it's also popular for its lovely views over The Cobb and Lyme Regis Harbour, home to a fleet of fishing vessels. Amenities include washrooms, changerooms, and showers, as well as lifeguard supervision. On-water activities include sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

When it's time to take a break from the beach, there are plenty of fun things to do nearby. Take a stroll along the promenade to the shops along the sheltered old laneways off Marine Parade; grab an ice cream or fresh seafood to go; or take a stroll along the historic Cobb, the town's 800-year-old seawall made famous in the movie The French Lieutenant's Woman .

Monmouth Beach

Stretching a mile from The Cobb to the cliffs west of Lyme Regis, the fact that Monmouth Beach is made up largely of pebbles and rocks shouldn't put you off spending time here. Named after the Duke of Monmouth who disembarked here in a failed attempt to claim the throne in 1685, this lovely beach is usually a lot quieter than the other Lyme Regis beaches.

In addition to water sports enthusiasts, however, it's very popular among fossil hunters. Lyme Regis is, in fact, famous for its abundance of fossils, and you won't have to look too hard to find examples of ammonites and belemnites exposed by the elements.

Wait for the tide to go out and, if you walk to the far end of the beach, you'll witness the famous ammonite pavement, a layer of limestone featuring numerous large fossils . Tours and walks of the beach and its amazing fossils can be arranged through Lyme Regis Museum.

Lifeguards are present on Monmouth Beach during the summer months, and beach huts can be rented by the day or week from the township. Dogs are permitted here year-round. Parking for up to 500 cars is also available.

East Cliff Beach

Follow Lyme Regis' impressive promenade and seawall all the way to its eastern end, and you'll find yourself staring down at East Cliff Beach or, as it's known to locals, Back Beach.

Lyme Regis' most easterly beach can also be reached by a 114-step walkway from the large Charmouth Road car park for those wanting to avoid the traffic of the usually bustling downtown core. You can also reach it via a pleasant pathway with plenty of benches that leads down to the promenade from St. Michael the Archangel Church.

The quietest of the town's many beaches , it's a popular spot for adults wanting to catch the sun and swim without having to deal with the crowds. A lack of amenities generally keeps families away, unless they're here to do some fossil hunting.

Fossils, in particular ammonites, are regularly exposed by sea erosion, and are generally easy to pick up and carry home. A word of caution, though: you're only permitted to collect fossils exposed on the beach – do not attempt to dig them out of the brittle cliff face.

It's also a dog-friendly beach, with our canine friends welcome here year-round. And keep an eye out for the tides, as the beach is inaccessible at high tide.

Church Cliff Beach

Located between Front and East Cliff beaches, Church Cliff Beach should definitely be on your list of Lyme Regis beaches to explore.

While you can easily access the beach from Lyme Promenade, it's certainly worth paying a visit to the charming church after which the beach is named: St. Michael the Archangel Church, perched high above the promenade. Here, you'll find numerous park benches just waiting to be sat on while you admire the exquisite views eastward toward Charmouth.

Church Cliff Beach is one of the smaller beaches in Lyme Regis , but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Accessible from the promenade via an easy-to-navigate set of steps, it's a mix of sand and pebble, with a rocky portion that's exposed at low tide. At high tide, the beach is entirely submerged .

A seawall on its eastern edge provides protection from erosion as well as wind, and offers a little shade. Dogs are permitted on the beach year-round.

Address: Church Street, Lyme Regis, Dorset

The Cobb Lower Walkway Beach

If you do walk to the end of The Cobb, Lyme Regis' historic harbor arm – and you certainly should – you'll walk right past a delightful little beach called The Cobb Lower Walkway Beach. Built in the 1800s on the site of a harbor wall that dated back to the early 14th century, this charming beach is built up from sand deposited here over time from the mainland.

If you can find a spot to sit, you'll be rewarded with a view of pleasure craft and fishing boats coming and going from Lyme Regis Harbour, as well as spectacular views of The Cobb and over Lyme Bay toward the English Channel.

Made famous from the Meryl Streep movie The French Lieutenant's Woman , The Cobb offers many other fun things to do, too. These include the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium, as well as fishing charters and boat cruises. Washrooms are located on the mainland, and dogs are permitted on the beach at all times.

Address: The Cobb, Lyme Regis, Dorset

The Spittles

Accessible only at low tide from East Cliff Beach, the beach at the base of the Spittles cliffs is fun to explore. It's located at the midway point between Lyme Regis and the village of Charmouth to the east. You do need to familiarize yourself with tide times for the Spittles to ensure you can get there and back safely.

With its mix of pebble and sandy sections, be warned that this is less a beach for sunbathing and swimming, but more for exploring its unique geology. It's part of the Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site , and you're likely to spot numerous fossils along the way. That said, you'll also need to be aware that the cliff face is known to be unstable, and subsidence does occur.

Charmouth itself is a charming destination and features two beaches worth visiting: West and East beaches. But if you do intend on walking there along the shoreline, be prepared to take the longer inland South West Coast Path back to Lyme Regis. It is, however, a particularly lovely walk in springtime when the Spittles is festooned with colorful bluebells.

Charmouth West Beach

However you choose to get to Charmouth (it's an hour on foot or a 10-minute drive), you'll be rewarded with the chance to enjoy two of the best beaches in Dorset. Charmouth West Beach is the closest to Lyme Regis and extends over 1.5. miles from the River Char toward Lyme Regis.

It's also one of the most picturesque beach settings in England. Rising high above the beach is Black Ven , one of England's biggest and most active landslide zones. Featuring larger pebbles than most other beaches, it's a great place to get in some fossil hunting when you want a break from all that swimming and sunbathing. The beach itself is level, with a wide sandy section revealed at low tide.

The beach also features a variety of excellent amenities. These include the seafront Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre . As well as a large fossil collection, the center offers tips and tactics regarding safe fossil identification and extraction. In addition to ample car parking, there's also a café and a handful of shops, and public washrooms. Beach hut rentals are also available.

Address: Lower Sea Lane, Charmouth, Bridport, Dorset

Charmouth East Beach

Located on the opposite side of the River Char, Charmouth East Beach shares the same facilities as the village's west beach. This great family beach boasts a large swath of sand that gets even bigger at low tide, and which boasts a shallow-water entry, so it's good for younger kids to paddle in. And the rocks here are generally smaller than those on the other side of the river.

When not splashing about or building sandcastles, take the kids on a fossil hunt. Charmouth's beaches are well known for their copious, easy-to-find fossils, so there's a good chance you'll be taking some of these old rocks home with you. When the tide's out, it's also a good spot to get in some rock pooling and searching for shellfish, crabs, and other marine life.

A short footbridge links Charmouth East Beach to the car park and facilities.

Make sure you bring a fishing rod and not a selfie stick to capture your catch at Lyme Regis.

Equipment and Tools

To equip yourself for sea fishing in Lyme Regis, you’ll need to know about the necessary tools. In order to achieve a successful catch, it’s essential to have the right equipment. The section “Equipment and Tools” with sub-sections “Rods and Reels, Bait and Lures, Other Fishing Tools” introduces you to the main tools you’ll need for the trip.

Rods and Reels

Rods and reels are essential tools for any angler. The right combination can make or break your fishing experience. Let’s dive into some key considerations.

Consider how you plan to use your rod and reel when purchasing. It’s crucial to note that different environments and species require different equipment and specifications. Therefore choosing specialized equipment for each occasion will give you an edge in getting the best catch possible.

New anglers should focus on basic models and get comfortable with casting techniques before moving onto spinners/binders. Any rod and reel can last you for many years if you take good care of them and maintain their condition, so investing in quality can provide an invaluable return. With the right combination of rod and reel, you’ll be able to tackle any body of water or fish without breaking a sweat.

Using the wrong bait is like bringing a rubber chicken to a sword fight – it’s just not going to cut it.

Bait and Lures

Bait and lures are the lifelines for fishing enthusiasts. Finding the perfect bait and lure can make all the difference in securing a catch.

  • 1. When choosing bait, consider what type of fish you want to catch and their feeding habits. Live bait such as worms or minnows can be effective for many species.
  • 2. Artificial lures come in various forms such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits or jigs . Each has specific purposes and mimics different prey.
  • 3. The colour of lures also plays an important role. Brighter colours such as yellow or chartreuse work well in murky water while natural colours like brown or green work in clearer waters.

It is worth noting that experimentation with different types of bait and lures can lead to success. The world of fishing is constantly changing so it’s essential to keep up with new trends.

Pro Tip: Before casting your line, give your bait or lure a scent boost by rubbing it with a local food source commonly found in the fish’s natural habitat. Happy fishing!

Fishing without a good pair of pliers is like going on a blind date without bringing mace.

Other Fishing Tools

Fishing seems like a simple sport, but it requires the right tools to be successful. Besides bait and fishing rods, Other Fishing Tools are essential. These tools set you up for success and safety.

Other Fishing Tools:

  • Pliers – Used to grip hooks, cut lines, dig out hooks from fish mouths, and more.
  • Nets – Used to scoop up fish effectively and safely reduce harm to the fish.
  • Gloves – Help protect your hands from friction burns following a massive catch or handling slimy fish.

In addition to these primary tools, anglers should have an extra pair of pliers and gloves that can be quickly retrieved if needed. It’s crucial to invest in high-quality products as They will last longer; thus, they offer better value for money.

Once I saw my friend getting injured after attempting to remove a hook barehandedly from a fish’s mouth. Since then, I always carry extra gloves and pliers while fishing. Safety comes first!

If variety is the spice of life, then the ocean is a buffet of flavors when it comes to types of fish.

Techniques for Sea Fishing

To improve your sea fishing techniques in Lyme Regis, learning different approaches and methods is the key. Trolling, bottom fishing, and fly fishing are three common techniques that you can use. Each method requires different abilities and equipment. Let’s explore how each of these techniques can help you catch more fish in the area.

Using downriggers in trolling fishing allows anglers to maintain depth control, making it perfect for targeting specific species. The depth at which the bait runs can be adjusted easily, allowing you to be more efficient in catching your target fish.

Trolling has been used for centuries and has developed with modern technology offering equipment like electric reels and GPS-controlled trolling motors that allow for accurate speed control and add a sense of ease with its efficiency. These advancements have helped both novice and experienced anglers achieve their dream catch by covering more ground, reaching ideal depths, and ultimately leading to a more successful day on the water.

If you’re feeling down, go bottom fishing – because there’s nothing quite like pulling up a good catch to lift your spirits.

Bottom Fishing

For sea fishing enthusiasts, bottom fishing is an essential technique to master. This method entails catching fish at the bottom of the water body, using bait and weight to keep the line stable. Here are three points to improve your skills:

  • Choose the right gear : A sturdy rod, reel and line with enough strength to withstand the added weight required for bottom fishing is necessary. For example, monofilament lines work well for this kind of fishing.
  • Select your bait wisely: Choosing the right bait types will determine the success of your bottom fishing experience. Cut baits like clams or squid work great as they can stay in place longer without getting washed away by strong currents.
  • Pay attention to area features: Successful bottom fishing also depends on finding favourable areas – rocks, reefs and sunken structure where fish live. Always use a fish finder device to detect available fishes hiding in those areas.

To improve effectiveness and make it easier to attract fish, try changing up bait frequently as different kinds of fish might prefer different lures.

Pro Tip: It is essential always to be patient when Bottom Fishing because it takes some time for species such as Snapper that habits deep stratum of water bodies to come out even after successful setup & casting.

Fly fishing is like trying to catch a specific piece of hay in a haystack, but with a really expensive stick.

Fly Fishing

  • Choose the Right Equipment: Select a lightweight fishing rod, reel and line as it transmits vibrations better and lets you feel the fish bite. Fly fishing gear costs more than traditional spin-casting equipment, but novice anglers can purchase affordable starter kits.
  • Master Your Casting Technique: Use gentle wrist flicks to extend significant length on your casts without exhausting yourself. Roll casting is another way to generate distance when limited by overhead obstructions such as trees or rocks. Therefore, learn both reverse and double-haul cast techniques.

On one calm morning while fly fishing on a remote lake in Scotland my fly gets crushed by an enormous rainbow trout who managed to pull my entire rod into the water with their powerful force! It took me over ten minutes to reel it in due to its strength, but that was enough time for me to cherish this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fly fishing is not just about catching fish; it’s an immersive experience that puts you in touch with nature . Perfect your technique and prioritize understanding your prey so that when that moment arrives, you’re ready for either a feisty fight or peaceful release.

Choose the right charter and you’ll catch more fish than a cat at a goldfish convention.

Once upon a time, Maria had gone to Scotland for her summer vacation. She tried Scottish traditional haggis which she was skeptical at first but found out it was delicious – spicy and savory. She even caught her own dinner – trout fishing in the nearby stream guided by the locals! It was a fantastic experience that she would never forget.

This article may have convinced you to book a luxurious vacation, but let’s be real, we all know you’re just going to end up on your couch binge-watching Netflix.

East Cliff Beach

beached yacht lyme regis

East Cliff Beach, also known as Back Beach, is the furthest east and extends towards Charmouth.

Church Cliff Walk, along the top of the sea wall, provides access to the beach and you can reach the sea wall by walking along the seafront from the town in an easterly direction or descend the 114 steps from Charmouth Road car park.

This section of beach is bursting with fossils and with a bit of knowledge and luck you can discover your own. Fossils can be found washed out of the cliffs loose on the beach in the gravel and shingle. You can collect what falls loose on to the beach, but not dig into the cliffs.

The cliffs around this area are the remains of a Jurassic seafloor that was teeming with life 180 million years ago. As these cliffs collapse into the sea and the waves break against them, fossils are exposed on the beach with the most recognisable being the spiral shaped ammonites.

This section of the Jurassic Coast is one of the most active landslip sites in Europe, so avoid getting too near the cliffs. Even at a distance you can hear the blue lias rock ticking and clicking, preparing to collapse again.

There are lots of organised trips where you can learn the best tips and techniques for finding fossils whilst staying safe. The best time to go fossil hunting is just after a big storm as the cliffs are naturally eroded with fresh fossils exposed.

The beach is cut off at high tide so always check the tide times before venturing out.

Dogs are allowed on this beach, off the lead, at any time of the year.

Church Cliff Beach redesignated as a bathing water

Church Cliff Beach redesignated as a bathing water

CHURCH Cliff Beach in Lyme Regis has been redesignated as a bathing beach after a two-year campaign.

Local water quality campaigners, swimmers and many local businesses have been celebrating after receiving the news.

The designation means the water quality at the beach will have to be monitored between May and September by the Environment Agency, with better information provided to the public.

If the water quality isn’t good enough, the Agency has to investigate the causes and identify what’s needed to clean it up.

The campaign has been led by the River Lim Action Group, which applied for the redesignation with the support of Lyme Regis Town Council.

Vicki Elcoate, of the River Lim Action Group, said: “This is excellent news after a lot of effort by the local community, who got right behind the campaign.

“It’s a lever to secure better water quality and the pressure is now on South West Water and the Environment Agency to find a solution to our pollution problems.

“It won’t happen overnight but it’s so much better than having a beach where people swim that isn’t monitored.”

Lyme Regis Town Council’s operations manager Matt Adamson-Drage said: “The town council and I, as the council’s environment officer, are delighted that DEFRA has agreed to designate Church Cliff Beach as a bathing water from May 2024.

“The local community River Lim Action Group has been the driver behind this achievement and are to be congratulated for getting this far.

“The town council has been facilitating meetings with the RLAG, Environment Agency, South West Water and Dorset Council for the last two years and Dorset Councillor Belinda Bawden and MP Chris Loder have been key supporters of the work to clean up the River Lim that leads to this beach.

“We will continue to work with these agencies collaboratively and respectfully to achieve a better outcome for the river and ultimately the front beaches.

“The town council is committed to improving the environment in which we all live; introducing an Environment Committee, committing to a net zero carbon reduction plan by 2030 and recently achieving a Silver Level Carbon Literacy Award – the first town council in the country to do so.”

Bev Glock of the Lyme Regis Bluetits said: “We are super excited to hear that Church Beach has been redesignated.  The swimmers and local Lyme people have put so much effort into achieving this. It’s a huge step forward to help prevent us all swimming in poo.”

Malcolm Greenslade of Lyme Bay Swimming said: “The swimming community here in Lyme Regis is delighted to hear DEFRA have approved the application to re-designate Church Beach as a bathing site.

“It really is great for the town as a year-round resort and it’s what we deserve. Thanks to all the campaigners who have worked so hard to get this through”.

Church Beach in Lyme Regis is one of 27 beaches designated today (Tuesday 13 May), although it is the only one in Dorset.

Others in the south west include the River Tone in French Weir Park, Taunton, and the River Dart estuary at Dittisham, Devon.
