Pisorno, the city of dreams

In 1934 , thanks to Giovacchino Forzano, writer, theatre director, author of comedies, historical dramas and opera librettos, and to entrepreneurs such as Agnelli and Borletti, the modern film industry was born in the pine forest of Mezzapiaggia, in Tirrenia. Halfway between Pisa and Livorno, where Tirrenia was developed in the same years, the most modern studios were built in Europe, when Cinecittà in Rome did not yet exist: Pisorno was born and people began to talk about the 'city of dreams'. The term Pisorno was born from the union of Pisa and Livorno . Another of the essential figures for the birth of the studios was scenography architect Antonio Valente, who carefully considered the Hollywood experience, focusing on the rationality and economy of the systems. Why was this area of Italy chosen? Looking around, in just a few square kilometres, there is a concentration for all the possible scenarios, which was essential to a cinematography that did not yet have today's special effects. There are the gentle slopes of Monte Pisano to the east, the Apuan Alps to the north, the hills to the south, and the sea to the west: all the necessary locations to film the outdoors. Just with a little imagination here we have the sea with pirate ships, the river populated by crocodiles, the impenetrable woods hosting ferocious animals and wild tribes, the sweet countryside for romantic love stories, and cities of art like Lucca and Pisa where to set historical films... The works were started with the approval of Mussolini, who had quickly sensed the persuasive force of cinema and the support it could give to his regime, a formidable tool for controlling popular emotions. 'Cinematography - he proclaimed - is the strongest weapon'. Films are yesterday's stories : an ancestral need of human communities is to tell and listen to stories. Watching a movie is what it used to be like sitting around the fireplace listening to stories. In 1943 Pisa was bombed. The Germans requisitioned and closed the Pisorno studios. The first post-war film shot in the studios was Joseph Losey's Imbarco a mezzanotte (Stranger on the Prowl) (restored thanks to the project of the Municipality of Pisa 'Adopt a film. One hundred masterpieces to save'). The first film in colour was shot in 1954: Rigoletto e la su tragedia (Rigoletto). Then, in 1957 the great English producer Henry Saltzman arrived in Tirrenia to shoot the adventure film Captain Gallant and he liked it. He then returned to shoot a series of films from the novels of Ian Fleming based on the adventures of a secret agent of His British Majesty: a James Bond . However, the Pisorno studios showed clear signs of crisis, unfortunately they were unable to accept the proposal and shortly thereafter, in 1959, declared bankruptcy. The studios were then taken over by producer Carlo Ponti , who, with his wife Sophia Loren and Vittorio de Sica , attempted a grand revival of the production with Totò , Eduardo and Peppino de Filippo and Mastroianni ... Pisorno no longer existed, the name of the new film studios became Cosmopolitan, until 1969, when the last major film was shot: 'L’assoluto naturale’ (He and She) (by Mauro Bolognini). At that time it was cheaper to film in some Spanish studios and also Cinecittà's competition was getting stronger. In 1989, in homage to the history of cinema and to cinema as a storyteller, the Taviani brothers (originally from San Miniato, in the province of Pisa) decided to shoot part of their film Good Morning Babilonia right in this area.

Sovrano: a real cruise ship

About Studio Lazzarini 

It seems that our regular readers have already noticed one thing. If there is any unusual (sometimes strange) concept, then most likely it was issued by the Lazzarini studio. On the one hand, the studio is known for the fact that far (most) of its projects remain on paper. Despite this, such a studio is needed - it is she who can afford crazy ideas that shipbuilding meters are even afraid to think about. 

Lazzarini has developed concepts for almost every type of yacht. Megayachts, superyachts, a flying yacht, yachts with huge sails, touched by the “Black Pearl” by Jack Sparrow, but in a modern wrapping ... The list seems to be endless. Now Lazzarini decided to take a new height. There were, as said, both superyachts and megayachts. Next up is the giant yacht. 555 feet long (169 meters) and 108 feet (33 meters) wide. What kind of animal is this?

Sovrano - the giant yacht of the future

Named Sovrano, which means "sovereign" in Italian. At the moment, it is claimed that this giant yacht will potentially be the widest in the world. Of course, it is worth waiting for the start of construction. 

It is planned to equip the yacht with platforms on both sides of the main deck. As a result, the width of the yacht is 108 feet.

These two platforms can be converted into helipads, swimming pools or additional lounges, depending on the owner's preference. Each platform is also equipped with four electric winches. They allow the section to be lowered to the waterline when needed for dining or lounging by the sea.

Distinctive features of Sovrano

The five-deck yacht has a covered atrium on the bow deck. This atrium is elevating and under it a small “oasis” is hidden, in which there is a green garden, three pools at different levels.

Another highlight is the gigantic compartment that can store two 49-foot dinghys and up to six supercars. It is complemented by a lifting platform and two cranes at the stern. Cranes can load and unload various vehicles.

Inside Sovrano can accommodate up to 50 sailors in 20 separate cabins. This makes it look more like a cruise ship than a private yacht. Of course, the living spaces can be fully adapted to the customer's wishes.

In terms of performance, Lazzarini says the steel-hulled vessel will be powered by electric motors or a hybrid propulsion system. This will provide a maximum speed of 18 knots or 31 knots respectively. The studio estimates that the construction of the yacht will take four years, by which time another crazy Lazzarini project is likely to be on the horizon.

“Delicious food in a beautiful setting” Review of Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

This restaurant-boat is directly in front of the World Trade Centre so convenient for anyone staying in this area. It isn't cheap but my meal was absolutely exquisite and the service quiet and unassuming. English menu on offer but clearly not a touristy place. Every other table was Russian couples and families. Windy night so the boat rocked a fair bit. If you don't mind spending a few roubles, it's a pretty impressive experience. 20% off if you go before 5 pm. Wish I'd known that!

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

As its popularity and success rate has grown over the last years Moscow Boat Show 2012 has developed to incorporate more than just an exhibition. These special events serve to attract leading exhibitors and visitors and allow all participants the chance to broaden their knowledge and of course their sales potential.

Moscow Boat Show helps representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improves national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 4 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
