Approximately 31 miles from the Port of Cagliari, is Villasimius, one of the most sought-out resort localities on the Mediterranean. It is rather well-known for its concentration of singular, golden-white beaches, transparent water, intense perfumes of the myrtle plant, of juniper and Scotch broom, and for its accommodation of every type of tourist.

Its history is linked to a legend that people from Cagliari like to recall. Its name seems to derive from an attempt by some devils to take possession of this part of the coast because of its special beauty. The legend says that God decided to stop the devils’ attack using the army of his faithful angels, whose head was Gabriel archangel .

The beach of Mari Pintau has very fine, white sand, pebbles, and pebble stones. Its waters are of a changing blue due to the plays of light created by the sun reflecting on the pebble stone seabed and this is exactly how it gets its name “painted sea”. White sands extend to the rear.

Day 3. Bonifacio

Bonifacio is a beautiful oasis on the Southern tip of the French island of Corsica, Sardinia’s scenic next door neighbor. It’s the best, and only, major harbour in the region, and is known for diving competitions, a medieval clifftop citadel, and some of the most spectacular shores in the Mediterranean. It’s a dramatic landscape, to say the least, precariously perched on a limestone promontory. It’s commonly called a pleasure port, for its alluring natural landscape, pristine uncrowded beaches, and the array of charming cafes and bars spilling out over piazzas in the cobblestoned old town. Bonifacio boasts breathtaking buildings that history buffs and architecture aficionados are sure to appreciate. Uninterrupted vistas of the sparkling salty seas make for magical space to soak up some sunshine whilst sailing or stationing. It’s a unique atmosphere that it’s referred to as France’s best kept secret by those in the know. It’s even become a mecca for scuba divers, as the ocean floor is filled with ancient shipwrecked vessels to discover.

Day 4. Maddalena Islands

Set right between Corsica and Sardinia is a magnificent archipelago called Maddalena that is a must visit. Only reached by boats or ferries, this charming and largely uninhabited area includes the islands of Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli. The yacht will anchor off Liscia or Saline, which will depend on the weather which spot will be better. During the afternoon the tender will take you around the Archipelago for sightseeing and a breath-taking snorkel.

The main island ‘La Maddalena’ will only be 3 – 4 miles away by tender. It is a very small island with only a handful of sights such as Piazza Umberto, Cala Francese, via Garibaldi that are short distances from one another. Most visitors come to the island to experience the laid back lifestyle of the locals and walking around the island is the best way to do that.  Maddalena offer a few small local restaurants. The food here is mainly local Italian dishes and fresh daily caught seafood.

Day 3 – 19 nautical miles

Iles Lavezzi, Corsica/Bonifacio

Today we will depart early and anchor off Isles Lavezzi, a remote water park sanctuary that is made up of spectacular rock formations. Its idyllic beaches and shallow seas is an excellent spot to swim, snorkel or dive. The yacht can always arrange a dive boat for this area where it is well known for large colonies of grouper fish and crystal clear water up to sixty feet.  Marked pathways enable you to explore the island.

Bonifacio, Corsica

Bonifacio is an amazing town, dramatically built right on the cliff edge. Here you can get off the boat and enjoy an afternoon at leisure meandering through the medieval lanes, touring the walled fortress area, or strolling along the bluff high above the harbor.  On the tip of the promontory is the marine cemetery and windmills that date from the XII century – but best of all is the view stretching across the straights of Sardinia. Terrace bars and restaurants, ice cream parlors and boutiques welcome you to this St Tropez type enchanting spot, which you can enjoy into the night.

The yacht can rent four-seat dune-buggies with an English speaking guide to take round the beachside and hilltops of  Corsica . This is very highly recommended by previous charter guests.

Day 5 – 15 nautical miles

Santa Amanza, Corsica

In the morning we travel to Santa Amanza and anchor off a very secluded scenic beach area that is great for water sports, relaxing and just getting away from it all. Being sheltered from the weather elements is a great area to have a beach day or picnic on the beach. This anchorage is the true definition of ‘relaxation’.

Day 6 – 24 nautical miles

Porto Cervo

Today we will travel two and a half hours to Porto Cervo and dock in the old town, which is the most exclusive dock in Europe. Here the sightseeing is a must, the shopping is spectacular and if you would like we can organize dinner ashore. Porto Cervo, a recreational Sardinian fishing village, can be described as active, chic, and very popular with royalty and movie stars alike!  In the early afternoon if you would like to venture out and see Sardinia’s countryside, the captain can suggest a tour van or scooters out of Porto Rotondo. The drive is breathtaking and this unique small town offers local shops and restaurants.

Tomatoes

Day 7 – 6 nautical miles

Cala Sabina

In the morning we will move to a more secluded anchorage where we can do water sports for the entire day and enjoy the beachfront. From this area you can take a short tender ride into Porto Rotondo and explore this unique small town that offers a variety of local shopping and restaurants. The yacht will depart Cala Sabina after dinner for a two hour scenic cruise to Olbia for the morning departure.

Day 8 – Disembarkation

Olbia Sardinia

Please keep in mind that itineraries are only guidelines, and they are not etched in stone! The following outlines for your journey is subject to change, as we are dependent on favorable winds and seas. However we know the areas very well and will have several contingency plans. You may like a specific area and choose to stay longer in that particular place.

Sardinia Sailing Itinerary

A Sardinia sailing itinerary takes you to Italy’s stunningly beautiful Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve and the world-famous Emerald Coast, well known for its superb beaches and myriad coves and bays. On longer cruises you can sail northward to the island of Corsica, France, or transit the Strait of Bonifacio and head south down the northwestern side of the island of Sardinia, where it’s a little less expensive than on the Emerald Coast and much more laid-back (see Sardinia maps). Both the archipelago and the main islands are enchanting cruising grounds regardless of the length of your Sardinia itinerary. They blend the boutique shopping, fine dining, and lively nightlife of chic ports such as Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo with the quiet and scenic beauty of the largely uninhabited Maddalena Islands. Most of all the sailing in these waters is splendid, with good winds on most days.

Cannigione Yacht Charter – 7 Day Itinerary

Porto cervo.

Situated in an inlet at the base of beautiful hills, Porto Cervo is a modern resort fashioned to fit the vision of the wealthy entrepreneurs who dreamed of establishing the north-east coast of Sardinia as a luxury holiday destination. By all accounts it has lived up to expectations. The harbour is often called the centrepiece of the Emerald Coast, with its four- and five-star resorts and hotels, and its designer boutiques, upmarket restaurants, and exclusive nightclubs. The village is in the Old Port, Porto Vecchio, on the southeastern side of the harbour,  while t h e P o r t o C e r v o S p a, w i t h i t s o u t s t a n d i n g y a c h t i n g a m e n i t i e s, i s o n t h e n o r t h e r n s i d e . There’s easy access to all amenities since the entire complex isn’t that big, though Porto Cervo is indeed the jewel of the overall 7,500-acre Costa Smeralda development that includes a host of private villas. Sailing in Porto Cervo waters is simultaneously beautiful for its scenery and lavishly indulgent for all the amenities available at this premier yachting destination.

Moorings are available. There is room to anchor in the outer reaches of the harbour.

Dinghy dockage: Dinghy dockage is available.

Things to do

Peach, cream, and white stucco buildings with red terracotta-tiled roofs occupy the slopes overlooking the harbour of Porto Cervo, giving the village its distinctly Mediterranean look. The Piazzetta, or village square, is closed to traffic and is the hub of the port. Exploring the narrow streets extending from it immerses you in the upmarket ambience as you browse in boutiques and jewellery stores featuring the luxury brands such as Gucci, Cartier, and Bulgari. The restaurants and cafés in and around the Piazzetta are excellent; after dark the ever-popular nightclubs reverberate with live music and exuberant dance rhythms. Porto Cervo itself has no beaches, but on either side of the harbour you’ll find superb white-sand beaches stretching for miles. Anchoring off them for a day stop in settled weather isn’t a problem, particularly because you’ll be in the lee of the land in the prevailing northwesterly winds. Porto Cervo is home to the famous Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, which hosts many regattas throughout the sailing season.

No facilities are available for yachts.

Sardinia Sailing Itinerary

Porto Rotondo

One could argue that a visit to Porto Rotondo would be a repeat performance of a foray to Porto Cervo, and to some extent the assertion would be correct. Like Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo is one of Italy’s premier yachting centres and a world-famous luxury vacation destination. Indeed both ports vie for high-end yachting aficionados. Yet Porto Rotondo has its own fine blend of the nautical and the upscale, a somewhat more intimate feel that sets it apart. Some of Europe’s best artists helped design the more noteworthy buildings. Sailing in Porto Rotondo waters is an unforgettable experience.

No moorings are available. No anchorage is available in this small harbour.

Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available.

The village of Porto Rotondo spreads out around the shores of the cove, picturesque and decidedly upscale. A stroll to the centre of the town takes you to the public squares. San Marco Square is constructed of locally quarried granite and was designed by the renowned sculptor Andrea Cascella. The Church of St. Lorenzo, itself an architectural icon, houses more than 2,000 wooden sculptures by Mario Cerioli, who is said to have worked on them for seven years. Live musical performances in the stately granite amphitheatre are a delight, if you are lucky enough to attend one. The miles of white-sand beaches are another major attraction of Porto Rotondo, where all kinds of watersports are popular. Rental cars are available for inland excursions to the archaeological sites such as the Li Muri Necropolis and the Tomb of the Giants of Li Loughi.

Dockage and all other facilities for yachts are available. Advance reservations are essential.

Sardinia Sailing Itinerary

Mortorio Island

Mortorio and neighbouring Soffi Island are among the smaller isles of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve. Located within an easy sail of Porto Rotondo or Porto Cervo, they make an excellent day stop or an overnight anchorage. Totally uninhabited, windswept and rugged, these islands are a natural habitat for all manner of seabirds; you can watch the birds wheeling and diving along the sandy shores. Beyond are the cliffs of the Sardinian coast, grand and awe-inspiring in their breathtaking beauty. Sailing in Mortorio waters allows you to experience the other side of the Emerald Coast, the one where Nature is supreme.

No moorings are available.

Exploring ashore to observe the wildlife and climb the hills to admire the spectacular views is a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Bringing along a picnic lunch and a cool bottle of vino adds to the pleasure. The beaches on both islands are extensive, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing.

Sardinia Sailing Itinerary

Caprera Island

Except for a resort at Garibaldi Bay, Caprera Island is nearly devoid of development. There are a few bungalows, a shop or two, but the natural beauty is held paramount over tourism. In fact, at the height of the summer season officials limit the number of vehicles allowed on the island’s roads. Flocks of royal seagulls and cormorants, and solitary peregrine falcons soar overhead. In the interior of this 10-square-mile island, Monte Tejalone rises 695 feet above sea level, dominating the skyline of neighbouring Maddalena and its smaller peaks. Because of the steady and sometimes strong winds funnelling in from the Strait of Bonifacio sailing in Caprera waters is among the best in the Mediterranean, which is why the most rigorous sailing school in Italy, The Sailing Centre of Caprera, is based on the south-west side of the island. Beaches, coves, and bays abound, making sailing around Caprera Island a delight.

No moorings are available. Among the best anchorages are the fjord-like Cala Coticcio and Cala Portese on the south-east side of the island.

Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available,  b u t l a n d i n g t h e d i n g h y i s e a s y i n t h e m a n y c o v e s when you want to explore a s h o r e .

A visit to the Garibaldi Museum is a highlight of sailing at Caprera. Hiking in the hills and along the many beaches is a delight, and for those interested in a longer walk, a trek along the road built on the dam connecting Caprera to Maddalena is a unique experience, like being in the middle of the sea while still on foot. Snorkelling and swimming are superb at Caprera, which is also one of the premier scuba diving sites in Italy.  D i v e e x c u r s i o n s c a n e a s i l y b e a r r a n g e d t o v i e w t h e m a n y R o m a n s h i p w r e c k s a n d n a t u r a l g r a n i t e f e a t u r e s o f t h e s e abed , an area abundant w i t h r e d s e a f a n s a n d other colourful marine life .

You can opt for a dash of civilisation, albeit in a very laid-back and somewhat rustic fashion, or you can go for more of the unspoilt natural setting that the marine park has to offer by sailing to the bays and coves along the extensive coast of this 12-square-mile jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

No moorings are available. The main harbour is Cala Gavetta on the south side of the island. There are many excellent anchorages at Maddalena Island. Cala Francese is a firm favourite and provides good protection from northerly and easterly winds. Other excellent choices for anchorages include the deep cove of Stagno Torto, Cala Portolungo, and Calla dello Spalmatore.

As with neighbouring Caprera, exploring the many coves and bays is a highlight of sailing Maddalena. The swimming and snorkelling is excellent, as is the scuba diving. Spending time in the small port of Gavetta to stroll along the narrow streets and browse through the shops, where you can buy handicrafts, jewellery, and other items made by local artisans, is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Enjoying dinner at one of the intimate cafés or restaurants, or sipping a cocktail aboard your yacht in a scenic anchorage is a wonderful way of savouring the delights of Maddalena.

Fuel and water are available at Cala Gavetta. Dockage is also available. Advance reservations are essential.

Sardinia Sailing Itinerary

Sailing in Cannigione waters brings you deep into the Gulf of Arzachena on the north-east coast of Sardinia. The gulf is shaped much a like a fjord and offers similar beauty. Rocky hills front each side, creating a rugged and yet scenic backdrop to the shimmering blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Moorings base in Sardinia is situated on the west side of the gulf near the port of Cannigione, a small, quiet resort town with a laid-back ambience quite different from what you’ll find when you head south along the Emerald Coast to bustling Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo. And that’s part of the charm of Cannigione yacht charter.

No moorings are available. There are many pretty anchorages near Cannigione.

Cannigione is about a one-hour drive from Olbia, one of the major communities in northern Sardinia, and it’s close to the Emerald Coast and the mountains of Gallura. Along the waterfront you’ll find a number of interesting shops and superb restaurants. There’s also a pleasant beach within walking distance, where you can take a refreshing swim or simply relax and admire the scenery. Taking your yacht to the end of the gulf brings you to a lagoon-like setting surrounded by lush green fields. A charming village perches on the shore. Renting a car to tour the nearby archaeological sites of Arzachena is an intriguing way to learn more about northern Sardinia and its history.

7 Day Sardinia Charter Itinerary - Porto Rotondo to La Maddalena

Ideal for Summer Season

Sardinia's raw beauty balanced by a multitude of luxury stop-offs make it a certified superyacht hub. If you're looking to explore this magical Italian island on a crewed yacht charter, let us help you get the most out of your experience with the perfect 7-day itinerary.

Porto Rotondo Distance: 70 nm*

Porto Rotondo

You’ll embark on your Sardinia yacht charter on the Emerald Coast in beautiful Porto Rotondo.

This elegant resort town is a popular stop-off for visiting superyachts throughout the summer but has a more peaceful atmosphere than its neighbour Porto Cervo .

Whether you’re starting your trip by relaxing on one of its many beaches or making a visit to the nearby Bay of Aranci and the island of Figarolo, this is the perfect way to enjoy a luxurious setting in privacy.

  • Porto Rotondo Area Guide

Porto Rotondo

Cala Di Luna Distance: 100 nm*

Cala Di Luna

Cruising further south the coast, you will discover many coves and beachfront to anchor dotted around.

Today you will have a choice between a variety of gorgeous beaches, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzé, Cala Luna, Cala Fuili and Cala Cartoe. Cala Di Luna is at the heart of Sardinia’s east coast, tucked away in the Gulf of Orosei and characterised by its deep caves carved in the limestone cliffs which protect it from the winds. We recommend you make this your prime anchorage.

The beach is only accessible by sea or a 4 km hike so it remains quiet despite its beauty and soft golden sands. Enjoy an al fresco lunch on board, absorbing the spectacular setting before spending the afternoon snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.

Cagliari Distance: 70 nm*

Cagliari

Your third day in Sardinia will be spent in the island’s capital, Cagliari, where you can spend a day strolling around the colourful and historic city districts.

We recommend you begin the day with a coffee in the Stampede District’s lively and bright Piazza Yenne, then follow the winding streets of Catello to see the landmark Bastione di Saint Remy.

After your cultural lessons, head down to the peaceful Villanova District where you can do a spot of shopping. Be sure to reserve a table at Niu restaurant for a decadent and elegant feast. Finish the afternoon back in the marina and take a stroll down the promenade that overlooks the Mediterranean .

Southwest Coast of Sardinia Distance: 80 nm*

Southwest Coast of Sardinia

As you cruise along southwest coast you’ll be treated to a treasure trove of Sardinia’s natural beauty, historical remnants, and beautiful beaches.

Along the coast you can discover the wild backdrops of Costa Verde and the cliff-bound coves of the Iglesiente. Inland you can visit the museums of Iglesias and the Unesco-listed Nuraghe Su Nuraxi in Marmilla if you're interested in learning about the island's ancient past.

Offshore, the outlying islets of Isola di San Pietro and Isola di Sant’Antioco offer a more remote aspect of Sardinia and are well worth a visit for their unique, tropical settings. With many anchorages for your motor yacht , this part of Sardinia is certain to be a hit with you and your guests.

Southwest Coast of Sardinia

Alghero Distance: 120 nm*

Alghero

Heading to the northwest, the pretty medieval town of Alghero waits for you.

Once ruled by the Spanish, Alghero still holds a strong Catalan feel today, from the architecture right through to the excellent cuisines for which it is known for. Alghero is also close to the beautiful Riviera del Corallo, famous as the home to the network of caves within the rocky headland of Capo Caccia - Grotta di Nettuno, which must be visited when you’re in Sardinia.

For supper, you will have many coastal bars and restaurants to chose from. However, if you're looking for something slightly more sensational and indulgent, we recommend that you reserve a table at Al Tuguri.

Alghero

La Maddalena

La Maddalena

Your final stop-off on your luxury yacht charter  vacation is the beautiful La Maddalena Island.

Only accessible by boat, it is the main island in an archipelago made up of seven large islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Spargi, Razzoli) and 55 tiny isolotti. Here you are free to soak up the unspoilt settings, hop between the islands and get to know the friendly locals - the perfect way to finish your trip.

In the evening you will return to Porto Rotondo where you will disembark and bring an end to your charter vacation. The memories you have made on this trip will follow you forever, and maybe even inspire you to start planning your next charter adventure.

Sardinia

CHARTER IN SARDINIA

As you sail up on your super yacht to the island of Sardinia, you are immediately impacted by the striking contrasts of the landscape. The rolling mountains are punctured by scalloped bays filled with snow white sand, all engulfed in the inconceivable blue of the Mediterranean Sea. The juxtaposition doesn’t end with the scenery as Sardinia has some of the Med’s hottest nightlife adjacent to a unique tranquility afforded by tiny coves and hidden beaches. Explore one of Italy’s greatest treasures just off the coast of the Italian peninsula for a Mediterranean experience you can’t miss.

PORTO CERVO

Porto rotondo, southwest sardinia, la maddalena, day 1 — porto cervo.

Combining glamor with a laid-back cool Porto Cervo is Sardinia’s hub of life with mouth-watering restaurants and high-end shopping. Costa Smeralda, the Emerald Coast, lies in northern Sardinia and is known for its extravagance so enjoy the bustling town before meeting the yacht. Relax and have cocktails as you cruise the coastline. In the afternoon, hit the green at Pevero Golf Club or enjoy a spa treatment at the popular Hotel Cala di Volpe, then enjoy an afternoon aperitif. As the sun sets, head for Phi Beach or the uber-fabulous Billionaire Club to dance the night away with the glitterati.

DAY 2 — PORTO ROTONDO

Cruising south, you’ll find the tiny resort community of Porto Rotondo. With substantially less tourists than its neighbor sit in the Piazzetta San Marco for a morning coffee with locals and fellow yachters. Continue your peaceful excursion by sailing to a petite cove with private more intimate beaches. Less haute than Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo has a more relaxed atmosphere, but still offers luxury. Hotel Sporting’s local seafood dishes and impressive wine list make this spot a must-visit.

DAY 3 — CALA LUNA

As you continue to cruise southeast, you’ll be enamored by the beauty of Cala Luna. Craggy limestone cliffs covered by dense greenery plunge into the aquamarine waters. Early risers are rewarded by the surreal view created when the sun rises and illuminates the coastal caves. Created by a landslide in 1962, Cala Goloritze is one of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches. Featuring numerous other beaches mixing smooth white pebble and sand, explore the white crescent of Cala Luna and discover the wonders of the cave-pitted cliffs.

DAY 4 — CAGLIARI

The best way to arrive in Cagliari is by sea. Cruise into the island’s capital for a view of the town’s medieval architecture in “old town” Il Castello contrasted against the contemporary harbor. An archaeology museum in town will transport you as its home to the Nuragic complex, 4,000-year old stone defensive structures found only in Sardinia. If history isn’t on the menu, enjoy some local shopping on Via Roma and Via Manu.

DAY 5 — SOUTHWEST SARDINIA

Originally a mining heartland, the abandoned mines are now home to various museums and visitor attractions. Visit Forte Village Le Dune for a relaxing day at Thermae de Forte, a Leading Spa of the World. If you’re itching for more excitement and have young children a stop at Leisure Land is necessary. Filled with activities like go-karting, ice skating, and bowling it’s fun for the whole family. Before you set sail take in the spectacular views of the Italy’s highest sand dunes at Le Dune nearby. Continue cruising Sardinia’s coastline, dotted with tiny towns and cozy coves, and you will come to the Sardinian Islands. Sant’Antioco, the larger island, and San Pietro-Punto di Cala Fico are wild and ruggedly beautiful with deep waters and high cliffs. Charters with children will want to stop at Forte Village Le Dune. Not only does it boast the Thermae de Forte, a Leading Spa of the World, but also go-karting, ice skating, bowling and more can be found at Leisure Land. Be sure to stop at Le Dune, located close by, which is home to Italy’s highest sand dunes — a spectacular sight.

DAY 6 — ALGHERO

Continuing up the west coast of Sardinia, you’ll stumble on Alghero. The Catalonians left a distinct impression on this town which can be seen through the architecture and the culture. Walk along the cobblestone streets to the centro storico and stop for lunch at a restaurant where the menus are often written in both Italian and Catalan. During the day venture into the Grotte di Nettuno, a cave full of stalactites, which are essentially icicles protruding menacingly from the ceiling in an impressive natural feat. Wine lovers will rejoice as Alghero is home to a bevy of impressive vineyards. Enjoy a wine tasting before dinner in this beautiful old town.

DAY 7 — LA MADDALENA

One of Sardinia’s better kept secrets, La Maddalena was declared a national park in 1996 and has fewer tourist footprints than other destinations along the coast. Part of an archipelago comprising of 6 other islands, fest your eyes on the grey-pink granite rocks, thorny macchie and miles of pine forest standing above some of the best beaches in Sardinia. On Razzioli you will find a blush pink and beach coyly awaiting. Anchor offshore and take a tender to explore.
