Alcaeus-class Corvette A pirate ship from Gaider's Mourn. Resembles a Steam Pinnace, but is actually much more deadly. Often sighted near Nunico and Demeaux Island.

Caligo -class Merchant Cruiser Available for purchase at London's docks, the ideal vessel for trading.

Cladery Heart A living vessel which resembles a human heart. It was once part of London's Echo Bazaar. It desired to travel the zees, and so the mother of the Cladery Heir surgically removed it from the Bazaar, and her father, an engineer, formed it into a vessel. It now rightly belongs to their daughter but it is zailing the zees on it's own, and has not been sighted for some time.

Corsair Undergalley A pirate zubmarine from Gaider's Mourn. Crack Pirate Steam-Pinnace Stronger and more aggressive than a normal Steam Pinnace. A pirate ship from Gaider's Mourn. Eater of Names A infamous ship made of bones and pulled by giant worms. It is captained by the Chelonite. If sunk it, it is said that the Chelonites will drown themselves. It is often sighted near The Gant Pole, where it is said, names are forbidden.

Eschatologue -class Dreadnaught The strongest and most expensive vessel available for purchase at London's docks. Its powerful guns can eliminate any zee beast, but it is not the swiftest of ships. Faustic Corsair Pirate ships from Gaider's Mourn that patrol the zees near Mount Palmerston. Glorious Dreadnought Shining ships of unknown origin. Often sighted in the zees near Adam's Way and the Kingeater's Castle. Glorious Frigate Shining ships of unknown. Often sighted in the zees near The Dawn Machine and The Grand Geode. The Irrepressible An infamous zubmarine of strange design, often sighted near The Gant Pole. Khanate Zubmarine Zubmarines that patrol the Unterzee in Khanbate waters. Khanate War Trimaran They patrol Khanate waters.

Lampad -class Cutter A small but swift boat, it can be purchased at London's docks. Leucothea -Class Steam-Yacht A yacht belonging to The First Curator of Venderbight. It is said to be "a vessel for diplomats, merchants and wealthy spies." Ligeia -class Steamer The vessel of choice for new captains, as its default engine has the best fuel cost consumption ratio of all the ships available for purchase at London's docks.

Maenad -class Frigate The main vessel of London's navy.

Phorcyd -class Corvette The fastest ship which can be purchased at London's docks, but it has no aft so it is bad for trading. Pirate Frigate The strongest of all pirate ships. Pirate Steam-Pinnace The weakest of all pirate ships, but they will still pose a threat to inexperienced Captains. Putterpony Non-hostile trade or transport zubmarines. Rat-Barge Boats captained by rats that patrol the zees around Nunico and Rattsey. Republican Dreadnought The main vessels of the Iron Republic, they are very aggressive. Often sighted in the zees near the Iron Republic and the Elder Continent.

Stymphalos -class Steam Launch A very slow boat as big and as weak as a dinning room table. It can be purchased at London's docks.

Tramp Steamers Non-hostile trade or transport ships. Unfinished Pirates Boats captained by Clay Men. Often sighted in the zees near Polythreme and The Cumaean Canal. Unfinished Revolutionaries Boats captained by Clay Men. Often sighted in the zees near the Iron Republic. Much tougher than Unfinished Pirate vessels. Wreckship Zubmarines constructed from wrecked boats. They hide on the sea floor and wait for other zumbarines to approach them.

Zubmarine A vessel with the ability to travel the Unterzee. The nations of the neath banned the development and creation of Zubmarines many years ago.

Sunless Sea review

Our verdict.

Wonderful writing resting on top of infirm foundations. Almost a classic, Sunless Sea falls a few leagues short of its final destination.

What is it? Lovecraftian naval adventure game with interactive fiction elements Influenced by Fallen London, Jules Verne Reviewed on i5-2500K 3.3Ghz, 16GB RAM, GTX 970 Alternatively Fallen London DRM Steam (also available on GOG) Price £14 / $19 Release Out now Developer Failbetter Games Publisher In house Link: Official site Multiplayer None

Sunless Sea's best moments are the ones I can't tell you about. Out on the 'unterzee' beyond Fallen London are islands to be discovered, and each of these islands promises a new story, a new idea, a new deftly-written spin on a sprawling dark fantasy with its roots in Lovecraft, Verne, Machen, Dunsany, Poe. The chance to explore a setting this inventive and diverse is rare, and you deserve the chance to do so without too much priming. I won't tell you why you should pay attention to the submerged rock formations near Polythreme, or why you'll breath a sigh of genuine relief when you first set eyes on Aestival.

Instead, I'm going to discuss Sunless Sea's more mundane, less spoilable elements—and although I recommend the experience overall, a fair number of these present problems. That's the story of Sunless Sea as a whole: a seductive but intangible atmosphere that draws you in, punctured by jutting flaws that rise up from time to time to scatter that atmosphere to the wind.

The game begins in December 1887. London has sunk into an underworld called the Neath, becoming Fallen London—the setting for Failbetter's browser-based adventure game of the same name. The city rests at the edge of a vast uncharted underground ocean. As the captain of a tramp steamer, you attempt to make your name and protect your crew in the face of dwindling supplies and mounting terror. Basic WASD-controlled naval exploration is matched with interactive fiction-style storytelling on land.

The simplicity of Sunless Sea belies its hostility. Poor decisions and misfortune will rob you of your crew, you'll bankrupt yourself buying just enough fuel to crawl back to London's safe harbour, and you'll risk your captain's sanity venturing deeper and deeper into the unterzee. Failbetter know exactly how to walk the tonal knife-edge between fear of the unknown and the romance of a long journey. They do it with writing, first and foremost, but also with haunting audio and visual cues—the way your ship lights diffuse into a fog-bank, the distant sound of bells.

Your captain can be lost forever, but Sunless Sea isn't a roguelike—its best features are authored narratives rather than anecdotes drawn from a dynamic system. Every time you die the islands are rearranged and you start a new journey. You can pick a different victory condition, if you wish, and the wealth of your former character's estate establishes the starting conditions of the new one. Overall, though, the experience is more like re-reading a choose-your-own adventure book than starting a fresh Spelunky run.

As in Fallen London—and other games that use the StoryNexus platform—gathering and spending resources determines which stories you have access to and how you're able to progress through them. In addition to the supplies and fuel consumed by your ship, you also collect materials both physical and abstract. An example of the former might be a crate of souls, stored in your hold for delivery to a far-off deviless. An example of the latter might be a 'restful night', saved up to ward off nightmares. There's something of the boardgame to this aspect of Sunless Sea—a hard underlying structure that becomes more important the longer you play. It often works to the game's credit, adding strategic depth to your narrative decisions and inserting a degree of chance and individuality into otherwise scripted stories.

The weakness of the StoryNexus system, however, is that it's ultimately about hoarding and gambling. This is the same compulsive loop that powers almost every browser-based management sim you could name. Sometimes, Sunless Sea's tremendous storytelling is enough to elevate the system out of those murky waters—as in the moment when you take a crew-endangering risk because the pragmatic alternative is so powerfully grim that you can't bring yourself to do it. At other times, the drive to maximise your odds of survival overwhelms the game's ability to spin a tale. As you visit and revisit islands you stop seeing the writing and start seeing the game. In one instance, taking tea with the locals might yield supplies while asking about the mysterious statue earns 'tales of terror'. I need supplies; I take tea. The story becomes a vending machine. This is a deliberately abstracted example, but it's a situation you will encounter in many forms. Repetition is integral to the game's structure, but repetition erodes atmosphere—an issue that Sunless Sea can only brush off with a mercurial flourish for so long.

If the basic act of traversing the world produced more interesting situations, this issue might be less pronounced—but as it is, sea combat and travel have very little influence on the types of decisions you make on land. Combat is especially weak, even after the substantial overhaul it received during the game's time in early access. You line up your ship's firing angles and take pot shots at AI opponents that are incapable of generating an interesting challenge. Monsters are primarily interested in charging you, and success is a question of having enough firepower and armour to win the exchange. Pirates and other 'human' opponents fare worse, because the AI doesn't know how to shake a tail. Get behind most foes and they'll die by inches, turning in a circle forever in a futile attempt to bring their guns to bear. Even while attempting to roleplay the life of a non-violent explorer, I couldn't help but see pirate ships as floating loot chests waiting to be cracked open. Sunless Sea doesn't need to be a great strategy game to tell a great story, but the two could have enhanced each other and it's a real shame that they don't.

There are other, smaller issues. This is a game that is fundamentally about immersing yourself in a written narrative that confines its writing to a panel that occupies less than a sixth of the screen for no good reason. I experienced a few crashes, and frequently encountered instances of broken syntax and the odd case of incorrectly-assigned 2D art. These are by no means dealbreakers, but they add to a mounting list of caveats.

I find myself wanting to return to the game even as I attempt to articulate its flaws. Sunless Sea is haunting, sad, exciting and energising by turns, and each new journey from the safe waters of Fallen London promises new sights and stories. It carries a recommendation because, ultimately, there's nothing else like it. I wish more games were this passionate about engaging the player's imagination. But it also represents a substantial missed opportunity, one that has become harder to ignore with every hour invested: its supporting structures are merely passable when they could have formed the basis of a classic. You will return from your travels with tales to tell, but you may have to gloss the odd nagging detail.

Disclaimer: parts of Sunless Sea were written by Richard Cobbett, a regular freelance contributor to PC Gamer. I used to see Richard from time to time when he lived in Bath, but haven't spoken to him very much since he moved away —and not since he began work on this game. I am confident that my judgement of the game has not been influenced by our acquaintance.

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
