Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich’s Two Superyachts Are Sailing Towards Each Other in the Mediterranean

Russian oligarch and billionaire Roman Abramovich is on the move—and so are his superyachts.

After being slapped with sanctions in response to Russia ’s invasion of Ukraine, the billionaire was last seen on March 14 at an airport in Israel, where he has dual citizenship, according to Reuters .

Abramovich, who is currently worth an estimated $7.1 billion, according to Forbes , appears to be moving his yachts to safer waters. His 533-foot superyacht Eclipse , normally anchored year-round in the Caribbean, has been sailing east towards the Mediterranean since February 21, according to global ship tracking platform MarineTraffic. As of Wednesday, the ship is located off the coast of Algeria and is still sailing east with no port destination specified. The yacht, estimated to be worth over $600 million, is one of the largest and most expensive in the world , and seems to be cruising towards Abramovich’s other yacht, Solaris , in the Ionian Sea.

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

The 461-foot Solaris  is currently located in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece and heading south. Solaris was most recently at a port in Barcelona, where it had reportedly been receiving repairs since late 2021 . The ship left without declaring a destination. However, it’s possible both Solaris and Eclipse are heading towards each other and are even eyeing ports in Israel where Abramovich is considered safe from sanctions.

Though a long-time ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Abramovich has denied having close ties to the Kremlin. This hasn’t stopped dozens of nations, including the US, UK and several EU countries, from implementing sanctions and asset freezes on the oligarch. The sanctions are part of a concerted multinational effort to pressure Russia’s wealthiest and most powerful individuals to help bring Russia’s war on Ukraine to an end.

Perhaps sensing the economic pressures to come, Abramovich made headlines just days after the Ukraine invasion for stating his intention to sell his beloved Chelsea Football Club in London for $2.5 billion. The billionaire said all proceeds would benefit Ukrainian refugees and “victims of the war,” which, notably, may also include Russian soldiers.

Russians own up to 10 percent of the world’s megayachts, so Abramovich is just one of many Russian billionaires who are moving their assets to avoid seizure by international authorities. This week, Italian police seized Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s 486-foot Sailing Yacht A, and earlier this month, France impounded the yacht Amore Vero , owned by Russian oil billionaire Igor Sechin. Other Russian billionaires have had their yachts impounded in other EU countries.

This isn’t the first time Russian oligarchs’ whereabouts have been made public. Florida teen Jack Sweeney, who once tracked Elon Musk’s jet, created a Twitter account —@RUOligarchJets—dedicated to tracking the private jets of Russian oligarchs, which is updated daily.

SOLARIS Yacht – Exquisite $600M Superyacht

The SOLARIS yacht was newly launched in 2021 by Lloyd Werft.

At 139.7 meters (458 ft), SOLARIS is considered an absolute giant in the world of superyachts and ranks as the 15th largest in the world.

Solaris Lloyd Werft Drone Shot yacht BV

SOLARIS yacht interior

No official photos of the interior of the SOLARIS yacht have been released, so the exact design is unknown.

However, judging from the minimalist and modern layout of the decks, it can be assumed that the interior follows a similar trend.

The German designer Frank Neubelt is said to have worked on the interior of SOLARIS, although details of the project are unknown.

The yacht is one of the largest in the world, so it comes as no surprise that the SOLARIS yacht can accommodate an impressive 36 guests onboard.

Around 60 crew members find space in the cabins below deck and are available to tend to every need of the passengers.

The yacht also features a large gym, spa, and several salons to host events and welcome guests.

MY SOLARIS Specifications

MY SOLARIS was built in 2021 by the German shipyard Lloyd Werft and became the largest vessel they had ever delivered.

The total length of the yacht is 139.7 meters (458 ft) which makes her 23 meters (75 ft) shorter than Abramovic’s other famous yacht, ECLIPSE.

Her beam is 21.35 meters (70 ft), and her draft measures 5.95 meters (19.6 ft). Her total weight lies at 11,247 tons.

The SOLARIS yacht is powered by six MTU engines which allow her to travel at an average cruise speed of 18 knots with top speeds of 20 knots.

SOLARIS yacht exterior

The exterior of MY SOLARIS was designed by Marc Newson Ltd , an Australian industrial designer who has worked in several industries, including aircraft, furniture, and clothing.

His work is easily recognizable by smooth lines and rounded shapes with geometric elements.

The SOLARIS yacht is a prime example of this with its sleek look, rounded balconies, and many windows. Her eight decks have an unusually light wood that decorates the many open spaces of the vessel.

There are several extendable platforms to release tenders and toys and a large beach club located close to the swimming platform.

Of course, SOLARIS includes a full-size helipad as well as several swimming pools, one of which is located on the largest of the decks aft of the vessel.

SOLARIS yacht price

Yacht SOLARIS was delivered to Abramovic for a reported price of US $600 million, placing her among the most expensive superyachts in the world.

She generates a further US $50 – $60 million in annual running costs.

Lawyer Baroness Shackleton failed to grab oligarch’s £200m yacht, ex-wife claims

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

An oligarch’s ex-wife has claimed that leading divorce lawyer Baroness Shackleton failed to seize her former husband’s £200 million yacht.

Tatiana Soroka, 51, won Britain’s biggest divorce settlement in 2016 after Lady Shackleton’s law firm Payne Hicks Beach (PHB) secured her a £453 million victory against Russian former husband, Farkhad Akhmedov, the 68-year-old oil and gas tycoon .

Ms Soroka also instructed PHB to chase her ex-husband for the settlement money, despite him being ordered to pay by a judge.

However, Ms Soroka has launched a legal claim against PHB, saying that the firm failed to help her seize the Luna, his £200 million, 10-deck, 377ft superyacht, despite her asking the firm to explore options for having it seized in Miami.

The exact figure that Ms Soroka is seeking from the High Court has not been specified, but she is aiming to recoup the value of “lost opportunity” as a result of PHB’s involvement in the case.

The Luna was built for Roman Abramovich, the former Chelsea Football Club owner , and has two helipads, a mini-submarine and a swimming pool. It is the world’s second-largest expedition yacht.

Now PHB, which denies it has acted negligently, has claimed that Ms Soroka never instructed the firm to seize the yacht, and instead preferred to pursue other avenues of Mr Akhmedov’s wealth.

In documents filed to the High Court and reported by the Daily Mail, PHB claimed that Ms Soroka told Lady Shackleton in a phone call that she was “not impounding the ship”, instead aiming for her ex-husband’s valuable artworks and money.

Lady Shackleton, who is a member of the House of Lords, represented the King in his divorce settlement with Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1996.

She has since become Britain’s highest-profile divorce lawyer and has worked with celebrity clients such as Liam Gallagher, Madonna and Paul McCartney. In 2008, she had a jug of water poured over her by Heather Mills after the latter was awarded just £24 million of the £125 million she had sought from the former Beatles star.

Lady Shackleton, who is nicknamed “Steel Magnolia” for her tenacity in representing her clients, qualified in 1980 and joined PHB as a partner in 2001.

In her legal claim, Ms Soroka said that she spoke with Lady Shackleton and a colleague over the phone in January 2017, telling them that Mr Akhmedov was in Miami with the yacht and to “explore options” for having it seized.

However, PHB claimed that Ms Soroka’s “entire claim is based on a false factual premise”.

‘Inflamed a difficult relationship’

The latest court documents are also reported to show that PHB claimed that Ms Soroka was aware that “attempting aggressive enforcement action against the Luna” would be viewed by her ex-husband as “wholly unacceptable (especially when his girlfriend Anna was on board and due to give birth very shortly) and would have greatly inflamed the already difficult relationship between her, Farkhad and their two sons”.

Furthermore, the law firm claimed that even if Ms Soroka had instructed PHB to try and seize the Luna, she would not have been able to afford it as she was “invariably late” in paying the firm, and at one point, in March 2017, owed as much as £300,000.

PHB said any potential liability would be limited to the value of its insurance cover.

In a statement, the law firm said: “We have submitted a comprehensive defence which sets out how Ms Soroka’s claim is based on a false factual premise and is legally misconceived. Payne Hicks Beach remains proud of the result we achieved for Ms Soroka including the very significant award we obtained for her. She has not suffered any financial loss that can be recovered from this firm.”

Ms Soroka did not respond to the Daily Mail for comment.

2 superyachts owned by the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and worth more than $1 billion combined head east after he's sanctioned

  • Abramovich's two superyachts are moving eastward after he was sanctioned.
  • It's unclear where Solaris and Eclipse, worth a total of more than $1 billion, are sailing.
  • Abramovich's assets were frozen on Thursday as a part of UK sanctions.

Insider Today

Two superyachts belonging to Roman Abramovich are heading east after the UK hit the billionaire Russian oligarch with sanctions on Thursday.

Among the sanctions imposed on Abramovich, the UK government said, was the freezing of his assets, meaning his yachts and private jets are at risk of seizure.

Abramovich's 460-foot vessel, Solaris, was just off the east coast of Italy on Friday, according to the ship-tracking site MarineTraffic . It had left a shipyard in Barcelona , Spain, on Tuesday, where it had been docked since late 2021 for repairs, Reuters reported.

Related stories

It's unclear where Solaris is sailing. MarineTraffic says the destination of its port isn't recognized. Solaris has a price tag of $600 million, according to SuperYacht Fan .

Meanwhile, Abramovich's 533-foot yacht, Eclipse, has been cruising eastward from St. Martin in the Caribbean since February 21, MarineTraffic data shows. The boat, which costs $700 million according to SuperYacht Fan , was near the west coast of Africa on Friday, MarineTraffic said.

There is also no destination port for Eclipse listed on MarineTraffic's website, so it's unclear where the superyacht is going to dock next.

After the invasion of Ukraine, sanctioned Russian oligarchs such as Abramovich have sought to move their yachts  and  private jets across the world in an attempt to protect their assets.

Abramovich, who Bloomberg estimates has a net worth of $13.7 billion , is the owner of Chelsea FC. He had announced last week that he was selling the club, but the UK's sanctions mean he can't go ahead with the sale.

Sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's $600 million superyacht is cruising off Turkey's coast after 8 days' sailing without a destination

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Roman Abramovich 's yacht was off the coast of Turkey on Monday, ship-tracking data shows.

His $600 million yacht, Solaris, is "scenic cruising" without a port destination, per MarineTraffic.

It might be trying to confuse people about its final destination, a MarineTraffic spokesperson said.

A luxury superyacht owned by the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich that has been sailing without a destination for more than a week updated its status for the first time since leaving port, suggesting it has no immediate intention of docking, ship-tracking data shows.

Solaris, a 140-feet vessel worth $600 million , was off the southwestern coast of Turkey and heading west, according to the tracking website MarineTraffic . On Monday, the website showed that the vessel's status changed to "scenic cruising" from "awaiting orders," the status it had shown since leaving Tivat, Montenegro, on March 13.

Georgios Hatzimanolis, a spokesperson for MarineTraffic, told Insider that though yachts and ships can change their status whenever they want, "most likely in this instance" Solaris is "using the status to confuse people from where its final destination is."

"Lots of speculation on if it will be Turkey, Israel, or even possibly the UAE," Hatzimanolis said.

The locations of luxury assets owned by Russian oligarchs have been closely monitored since sanctions were levied against many of the country's elite in response to Moscow's ordering troops into Ukraine. European countries including Italy and France have seized yachts, private jets, and other assets from several sanctioned oligarchs.

Abramovich, whose net worth is estimated at about $13.6 billion, according to Bloomberg , was sanctioned by the UK and the European Union, meaning his assets have been frozen and he's been barred from doing business there.

Solaris had been docked in the Barcelona shipyard of the Spanish yacht-maintenance firm MB92 since late 2021. It left on March 8, shortly before Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, was sanctioned.

Before the announcement of sanctions, some of Russia's wealthiest people sought to move their expensive boats and private jets to jurisdictions where they might be able to protect them from seizure.

Abramovich's other superyacht , Eclipse, said to be worth $700 million , was just off the coast of Crete, a Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea, on Monday, according to MarineTraffic . The yacht has been sailing since it left St. Martin in the Caribbean on February 21, the ship-tracking website shows.

Abramovich's superyacht cruises in to Montenegro marina

Tivat (Montenegro) (AFP) – A superyacht belonging to the Russian billionaire owner of Chelsea football club sanctioned over Russia's invasion of Ukraine anchored off Montenegro Saturday, an AFP photographer said.

Issued on: 12/03/2022 - 17:08

Roman Abramovich's 140-metre-long (460-feet-long) Solaris cruised into the Porto Montenegro marina on the Balkan country's Adriatic coastline.

Local media who have been monitoring the ship's movements over recent days on maritime tracking websites said the boat left the Spanish Mediterranean port of Barcelona on March 8.

The United Kingdom on Thursday hit Abramovich with an assets freeze and travel ban as part of new sanctions against seven Russian oligarchs it described as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle. The football club owner has denied any association.

Canada followed suit the next day, saying he and four other individuals would "be prevented from dealings in Canada and their assets will be frozen".

The 55-year-old businessman, who has often been reported to be cruising off Montenegro and neighbouring Croatia, is rumoured to own half a dozen yachts.

The UK sanctions also targeted Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska.

Montenegro media have reported that one of Deripaska's boats, Sputnik, was spotted leaving Porto Montenegro on Friday. The vessel is often seen accompanying his own superyacht, Clio.

Abramovich had already announced his intention to sell Chelsea before the UK sanctions, with a host of potential buyers declaring their interest in a club that have won 19 major trophies since he bought it in 2003.

The UK government is still open to a sale but would have to approve a new licence, on the condition no profit would go to the Russian.

Aquamarine yacht

Abramovich-linked yacht in Netherlands changed hands on day of Ukraine invasion

Exclusive: The 50-metre Aquamarine is under repair in dry dock in Vlissingen

  • Russia-Ukraine war: latest updates

The 50-metre motor vessel, modest by oligarch standards, is covered in scaffolding and sitting under a hangar in dry dock, one of many such boats being refitted in the Dutch port of Vlissingen.

What sets the Aquamarine apart is that, until the day of the invasion of Ukraine, it belonged to Russia’s best-known businessman, Roman Abramovich , a Guardian investigation has revealed. On 24 February, ownership of the yacht passed from a company previously controlled by Abramovich to a close associate of his, the Russian businessman David Davidovich.

The Aquamarine is the fifth yacht to have been recently linked to Abramovich, who was placed under sanctions by the UK and EU for his reported links to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. His fleet includes two megayachts worth more than $1bn, which were scrambled to Turkey after Abramovich was blacklisted, and two smaller boats currently moored in the Caribbean.

Davidovich told the Guardian that he was the owner of Aquamarine as well as the Jersey-domiciled company MHC Jersey Ltd, which is registered as the owner of the yacht on the maritime database MarineTraffic.

“I can confirm that I am the owner of MHC Jersey Ltd and the Aquamarine yacht,” Davidovich said in a written statement.

Davidovich also said he was the majority owner of the British Virgin Islands-listed Norma Investments, an investment vehicle that is listed as the only shareholder of Aquamarine’s owner MHC Jersey Ltd, according to Jersey public record.

Aquamarine Yacht

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported , based on securities filings, that ownership of the Norma Investments, previously believed to be controlled by Abramovich, shifted to Davidovich the day Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February. The restructuring was seen by experts as a way to avert the possible freezing of some of Abramovich’s assets.

Norma Investments, which had been named as a company belonging to Abramovich in several public filings in the past, had served as a vehicle for venture capital investments.

A separate entity called MHC (Services) Ltd also disclosed that Davidovich had taken control of the company on 24 February. MHC (Services) is registered at Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge stadium, although it is not connected with the club and provides consultancy services.

Both Davidovich and representatives of Roman Abramovich did not reply to requests for comment on Abramovich’s links to Aquamarine. Representatives of Abramovich said the oligarch was not the ultimate beneficiary of MHC Jersey Ltd.

Aquamarine is undergoing repairs at Damen Shiprepair, a Dutch firm that specialises in the construction and repair of luxury yachts. A source at the shipyard who asked for anonymity said that it was generally understood that it had been Abramovich’s yacht.

Aquamarine was built by the Dutch firm Heesen , who delivered it in 2021. At the time of construction, the luxury-lifestyle magazine Robb Report priced it at $40.3m (£33.8m).

Heesen on its website describes the vessel as a “fast-cruising aluminium semi-displacement yacht with crisp design language and enviable appeal … A shallow draft of only 2.15m makes her a versatile cruising yacht for both the clearwater bays of the Bahamas and the Mediterranean sea”. It can accommodate up to 12 people.

According to the source at the Damen shipyard, Aquamarine was brought in to Vlissingen for “structural changes”, on 16 November 2021 but the source said no work has been done on the ship since 10 March, the day the UK sanctioned Abramovich.

“Only the crew onboard is allowed to work on the boat. But Damen or any other subcontractors are not working on it.”

The Netherlands on Wednesday announced that 14 unnamed yachts linked to Russian sanctioned individuals – 12 of which are still being built – were seized by Dutch customs authorities as part of EU’s sanctions against Russia.

There is nothing to suggest that Aquamarine was among the vessels seized.

Dutch customs officials and the foreign ministry declined to comment on the ownership and status of Aquamarine, citing the country’s strict privacy laws. Damen also said it did not comment on the status of individual clients.

Davidovich said: “To my knowledge, Aquamarine is not subject to any sanctions.”

While a number of Russian sanctioned billionaires have seen their megayachts confiscated across ports in Europe , the former Chelsea owner has taken steps to avoid such a fate by moving his two giant vessels – the 140-metre Solaris and the 163-metre Ecliples – to Turkish ports last month beyond the reach of western sanctions.

Abramovich has not publicly commented on why the two vessels were moved to Turkey.

The Financial Times earlier reported that two more yachts linked to Abramovich were currently moored on the Caribbean Island of Antigua. The government of Antigua has since confirmed that the two yachts moored on its territory belonged to Abramovich.

After a short stay here, popular charter itineraries tend to make a beeline north to the beautiful Maddalena Islands where the yacht can spend a day or two in a pretty sheltered anchorage while you and your guests take to the Carribean-blue waters for a spot of diving and snorkeling.

Another popular option is to set off from the Amalfi Coast on Italy’s mainland or Corsica in the north and then cruise down through the Bonifacio Strait. It’s simple enough to begin your superyacht vacation in a neighboring country before heading to Sardinia. For more advice please speak to your yacht charter broker .

With its A-lister appeal, rich cultural history and bevy of world-class beaches, Sardinia is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates. If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.

High cliffs of Mediterranean coast,

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommend booking up to 3 months in advance to give your broker the optimum time to organize everything down to the last detail.

Sardinia Yacht Charter Q&A

Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

  • Marinas tend to get quite busy during peak summer months, so you need to consider that when deciding on what night's you wish to spend in a slip. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard.
  • Mistrals are quite common during the shoulder months of May and October, so check with your charter broker about the best anchorages and itineraries if you intend on traveling during these months.
  • You should also be aware that certain zones in Sardinia's waters are restricted to protect the sea grass, which may impact on where you anchor the yacht. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

Due to its popularity during the Mediterranean Season, there should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Why not visit our yacht charter fleet page for a comprehensive look at all yachts available for charter around Sardinia .

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.

The optimum time for yacht charters in Sardinia is between June and September, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, clear blue seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Sardinia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most Sardinia yacht charters begin in the glamorous superyacht marina of Porto Cervo in the north west of the island, with popular charter itineraries including the breathtaking Maddalena archipelago, the pretty sheltered anchorages and charming villages found along Sardinia's east coast  and the island's capital Cagliari, awash with historical treasures and rich cultural heritage.

The island is also renowned for its protected marine reserves and beautiful clear waters where snorkeling and diving are the favorite activities for yacht charters. where the yacht can spend a day or two in a pretty sheltered anchorage while you and your guests take to the Carribean-blue waters for a spot of diving and snorkeling.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter on Italy's west coast only a short hop across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Alternatively, charters can begin on the spellbindingly rugged island of Croatia in the north, separated only by a narrow strait famed for its sailing.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

For more information about the costs of chartering a yacht, please read our helpful guide: Yacht Charter Costs Explained , which describes the fee structure in more detail.
