We are repeat customers of Rob/Ryan. Both boats are clean and comfortable, and both captain Rob and Ryan make for an enjoyable, relaxing day on the water. Highly recommend Sunshine Daydream.

We had an amazing morning on Sunshine Daydream with Lee as our captain! We enjoyed a day of cruising, snorkeling, swimming and sightseeing. Lee was not only a great captain, but storyteller as well. He is very informative about the islands and made us feel very welcome. I HIGHLY recommend and we will make sure to ride with Lee again.

We had an absolute blast. We’d been on the island for over a week, but the captain found great snorkel spots we had not hit by land. The boat was beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed, and the stops were just what we were looking for. It was the highlight of our trip!

Rob took us out just before New Years on his beautiful brand new boat. Rob brought us to wonderful peaceful bays to snorkel away from the rain, wind and currents. We appreciated his fantastic suggestions and really enjoyed the day.

No grumpy captains here! After using another popular company in Cruz Bay that kept us on a time table where we could not do half of what was promised, we switched to this awesome crew for our next charter. They were super chill, stuck to the game plan and if we decided to change our plan to spend more time in White Bay there was no issue and no attitude.

We had a great boating excursion with Captain Lee at Sunshine Daydream Charters! He tailored the excursion to what we wanted, and went to locations that were conducive to our snorkeling needs. Highly recommended!

St John Yacht Charters – Things to See & Do

St John

St John is definitely worth visiting while on your yacht charter in the Virgin Islands . Make sure to visit these places:

Cruz Bay is the main town on St. John and your gateway to all that the island has to offer. Located on St. John’s west coast, Cruz Bay offers fine dining, culture, and attractions. Enjoy the unique shops at Mongoose Junction, perfect for purchasing island specialties, enjoying a cocktail at one of its bars, or stroll through its galleries. Explore the island’s art and history at the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library and Museum. Cruz Bay is also home to the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center.

Virgin Islands National Park

Virgin Islands National Park is so much more than just its valleys, hills, trails and beaches … it is a record of St. John’s complex history dating back over a thousand years. The Archaeology Program is giving context to the intricate relationship between indigenous Caribbean cultures, European colonial powers, and the Africans brought to the island. St. John is known for hiking, and Virgin Islands National Park has over 20 trails to choose from for hikers of all levels.

For those seeking a casual stroll, accessible boardwalks will take you through historic ruins, salt ponds, and a bird viewing deck. Looking for a more challenging hike? Follow the Reef Bay Trail to the petroglyphs and the old Sugar Mill. The park also features the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, which includes federal submerged lands that support an intricate system of coral reefs, mangrove forests and seagrass beds.

Home to one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Trunk Bay is known for powdery white sand, turquoise waters and postcard-perfect scenery. Part of the Virgin Islands National Park, the beach stretches for over a quarter of a mile, and its soft sand extends into the sea. One of Trunk Bay’s greatest attractions is the 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail, which offers a memorable, guided underwater experience. Trunk Bay also includes a bathhouse, souvenir shop, snack bar, snorkel gear rentals, and lifeguards on duty. You should definitely include Trunk Bay to your St John yacht charter itinerary.

Located on a 170-acre peninsula in Virgin Islands National Park, Caneel Bay is one of the premier vacation resorts in the Caribbean. Once owned by American philanthropist, businessman and conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, the resort was built to blend into the landscape. He was so impressed by St. John’s beauty that he purchased the majority of the island and later donated it to the National Parks Service.

Yacht charter guests in St John can enjoy an excursion to Caneel Bay to indulge in one of its fine dining establishments or to unwind after a hike on one of the adjacent trails. The waters are also great for snorkeling and scuba diving, with a diverse collection of marine life, including parrotfish, angelfish, sea fans, spiny sea urchins, and the occasional sea turtle or barracuda.

Coral Bay is the smaller, quieter, quirkier town on St. John, and the perfect spot to sample authentic island cuisine, shop for souvenirs, get to know the locals, or explore some of nature’s greatest masterpieces. Located in St. John’s East End is Hurricane Hole, one of the Caribbean’s best-protected harbors, surrounded by winding roads and spectacular vistas. Go on an unforgettable night hike at Ram’s Head, illuminated only by moonlight, or snorkel Salt Pond Bay, where you might spot a sea turtle or giant hermit crab. For history buffs, the Emmaus Moravian Church is a registered historic site, easily recognized by its orange roof and known for its ghost stories.

Annaberg Historic District

The Annaberg Historic District is located on the ruins of the Annaberg Sugar Plantation in Virgin Islands National Park. Owned by William Gottschalk, Annaberg translates to Anna’s Hill and was named for his daughter.

In addition to sugar, molasses and rum were also produced at Annaberg. A trail leads through factory ruins, the slave quarters, the windmill, and the remains of other structures. Placards and signs will guide you along the way, describing the sugar production process and plantation life. Annaberg’s windmill is still a focal point of the site and was one of the largest in the islands.

Explore the Island’s Rich History

The island’s rich history stretches back to AD 300 when the Arawaks migrated from Colombia and Venezuela and settled there. They inhabited the island until driven away by the more aggressive Caribs in 1300. The first Europeans arrived in 1718 with the Danish West India and Guinea Company, naming the island Sankt Jan, or St. John. Under control of the Danish Crown, it became a hub for the sugar industry with a great number of plantations being established on the island due to the favorable growing conditions. In 1917, the United States purchased what is now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands, including St. John, to create a naval base.

Guide to St John

A nature lover’s paradise

The smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands , St John lies just to the east of St Thomas, and is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, with most of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park.

Remote, tranquil and undeveloped compared to its neighbours in the Virgin Islands archipelago, St John offers a slower pace of life and is a popular destination for hikers, snorkelers and nature lovers. For yacht rentals , the entry point for most visitors is Cruz Bay, the island’s main town and commercial hub, located on the west coast. The harbour can accommodate yachts of up to 6om in length, and there are restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets here where you can stock up on provisions, as well as a white sand beach around the bay.

Quieter stretches of sand can be found within easy reach of Cruz Bay, such as the secluded Hart Bay, on the south coast, which is also a prime snorkelling spot. The rocky outcrop in the middle of the bay provides a habitat for a variety of Caribbean marine species, including parrotfish, bluehead wrasse and angelfish, as well as an array of hard corals.

On the north coast, the stunning white sandy beach at Trunk Bay has been voted one of the best in the world, and receives more visitors than any other beach on St John. The sign-posted underwater snorkelling trail offshore is ideal for beginners, who can explore the colourful reefs and the tropical fish that live here at depths between 3m and 6m below the surface.

Further along the north coast, Watermelon Cay is one of St John’s most popular snorkelling destinations, with its clear water providing excellent visibility for exploring the abundant sea life here, which includes turtles, rays, conches and small sharks.

St John is a great place for scuba diving, too, with several sites worth investigating around the coast. One of the best is around Carval Rock, off the north coast, where experienced divers can explore 24m below the surface.

One of the most beautiful destinations in all of the Virgin Islands, this yachting playground is truly a nature gem, with tropical forests sheltering migratory birds, thriving mangroves supporting corals and anemones, and friendly dolphins and green turtles inhabiting the deep blue waters. More than half of it is actually protected by the National Park Service. For anyone who loves nature, adventure, and tranquility, this is the sailing destination for you. Best time to sailing St John, USVI

Even though the Caribbean is a wildly popular sailing destination, we still recommend spending plenty of time exploring the island either before or after your sailing adventure on a St. John boat rental.

The weather can affect your sailing plans if you end up booking your trip during a time with cooler temperatures or adverse weather conditions, like tropical storms and hurricanes. You can visit year-round, but we recommend booking for March through June if you want the most ideal weather and sailing conditions. Of course, like other tropical places in the world, the weather can be unpredictable, so just keep this in mind and pack according to the season you plan to visit.

If you plan to visit these gorgeous parts of the Caribbean sea, you might even want to extend your trip and take a longer tropical vacay! Want even more vacation ideas? Check out St. Thomas boat rentals for the U.S. Virgin Islands sailing vacations or check things to do in the British Virgin Islands . Sailo offers plenty of catamarans and sailboats for the Caribbean sailing vacations , so after you’re finished exploring Saint John, try island hopping!

What our Guests Have to Say...

Create a custom private charter – st. john, st. thomas and the british virgin islands.

Cooper Island - Rum - Virgin Gorda - BVI

If you have ventured all the way out to Virgin Gorda, then Cooper Island is a great place for lunch. This tiny island used to be a must stop for pirates and merchants back in the day to get their water and rum barrels repaired. Now it has a great little restaurant and fully-stocked rum bar that serves every rum made in the Caribbean!

Cruise to the Caves at Norman Island - British Virgin Islands

The Caribbean is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. The snorkeling here is amazing, and Norman Island has two such spots.

The Indians are pinnacle rock formations jutting out of 60 feet deep water. Exposed to the currents, a constant source of food nourishes the coral and sea life making this one of the best snorkel destinations in the BVI.

The Caves are the legendary resting place of buried treasure that was the inspiration for the book Treasure Island. Three caves await to be explored teeming with marine life and mystery.

Drinks on a secluded beach - Take It Easy Custom Tailored Excursions - Virgin Islands

While almost every boat going to the BVI will stop in Tortola for customs, this island is straight up neglected by the day boat community. Tortola has the only beaches left in the Virgin Islands where it will be just you on it!

If you desire your own beach, ask the crew of Take It Easy or Take It Easy 2 for the Tortola charter day trip and the island could be yours!

White Sandy Beaches and Beach Bars

A tour along the North side of St. John makes for a great start to your day on Take It Easy Custom Charters. As we journey along the coast, we can stop at what’s considered to be some of the best snorkeling on the island such as Waterlemon Cay, Maho Bay or Whistling Key.

Pirates Bight Beach Bar on Norman Island

So, you want to visit stunning white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters and have loads of beach bars to choose from? Then, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgins Islands is the destination for you!

Home to only 280 people and over 30 beach bars, Jost is the ultimate fun in the sun destination.

You will need your passport and go through customs to visit Jost Van Dyke since it is in British territory. We go through customs on a regular basis so contact us if you have any questions.

World-Famous Baths at Virgin Gorda, BVI - Take It Easy Custom Charters

One of the farthest British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is home to the world-famous Baths – a series of giant smooth, granite boulders strewn across magnificent white sandy beaches. These boulders lean against each other making cathedral style “rooms” below filled with warm lapping water that surrounds your body and small tunnels to explore. The Baths is truly a unique destination for adventure seekers who enjoy boulder jumping or being off the beaten path.

Peter Island BVI

Home to a super, upscale resort, Peter Island is a great place to spoil yourself. This resort has a pool bar, upscale gift shop and day spa. Dead Man’s Beach is the only beach in the islands with sugar sand, the softest sand on planet earth!

Snorking crusies St. John, US Virgin Islands - Take It Easy Charter

Buck Island is home to dozens of green sea turtles which are as close to tame as a wild turtle can get. Swim with the sea turtles and see other amazing marine life. Around the corner is an old navy barge ship wreck in 30′ of water, a snorkeler’s dream. Water Island is the Jost Van Dyke of the USVI with two awesome beach bars on honeymoon beach that serve amazing food and drinks.

Francis Bay Walking Trail is among the easiest of St. John hiking trails to traverse, and it’s also wheelchair-accessible. While the vegetation is a little brushy in some spots, the views are undeniably picturesque. It also features the Salt Pond and a dry tropical forest for you to explore

In 1969, NASA along with the US Navy and the Department of Interior (DOI) launched a study at Lameshur Bay to evaluate what would happen when people live and work underwater. The first structure that was built for this experiment was called Tektite, and the Tektite Trail follows the original quarter mile road used to deliver supplies to the aquanauts. Unmarked and barely visible, the entrance to the Tektite Trail starts at the bottom of the concrete paved road that leads to both Great and Little Lameshur bays.

The first Tektite experiment was a success and a second experiment, deemed Tektite II, was launched later that year that included the world’s first all-female team of scientists to live underwater. Tektite and Tektite II were each built of two cylindrical tubes about 12 feet wide and 18 feet high that sat 50 feet underwater throughout the mission.

Today the structure is gone, but the underlying foundation underwater remains, as does the trail to the entrance. The original base camp is now the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), located between Great and Little Lameshur Bays and run by Clean Islands International on behalf of the University of the Virgin Islands. Visit the Tektite Museum at VIERS for some cool artifacts from that crazy time in 1969.

Trunk Bay is the most popular beach and considered one of the top beaches in the world. There is a $4.00 charge per person daily from 7:30am – 4:30pm. Trunk Bay is a picturesque location for weddings any time of the day. It is most noted for sunset weddings.

Hawksnest Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand. It is an unforgettable place for a wedding. It offers restrooms and a place to change clothes for the Bridal couple and their guests. Hawksnest Beach is best for morning weddings because the lighting is absolutely phenomenal for photographs. There are no fees to enter or to use this beach and there is plenty of parking. Ceremonies of St. John offers canopy and chair rentals.

Annaberg Plantation

Annaberg Plantation Ruins was once a Danish sugar mill and plantation back in 1780. It was named after William Gottschalk’s daughter. Annaberg translates to Anna’s Hill. There are many charming settings for a wedding ceremony to be held within this elegant historical plantation with breathtaking views.

The ruins are open to the public and protected by the Virgin Islands National Park. If you are interested in having your wedding here you would want to schedule it in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Since the plantation is open to the public, it can get very crowded during mid day.

Clearly marked and accessible from North Shore Road (Rt. 20), the Peace Hill Trail offers far more than the obvious. A small parking lot allows for only about eight cars and is rarely full. Follow a wide path straight up from the parking lot to a flat knoll where lies an old sugar mill ruin. Great 300 degree view of the North Shore of St. John and across to the British Virgin Islands, those who only go this far are missing the best part.

From the parking lot on the way up to Peace Hill is an unmarked entrance to a half mile trail that takes you directly to Denis Bay beach. The trail and the west area of Denis Bay are park land, while the land to the east with a residential dwelling is privately owned. The west side of Denis Bay is the most interesting, with large black volcanic rocks, warmed sitting pools, and a small rocky island just off the shoreline with excellent snorkeling all around. Denis Bay also offers interesting sights and sounds. Boats cruise along the North Shore of St. John (Windward Passage and The Narrows) heading through Sir Francis Drake Channel to the British Virgin Islands, which can be seen from Denis Bay beach in the distance. Water crafts range from small motored dinghies to multi-hulled sailing vessels, and there’s never a shortage of things to watch. Visitors to Denis Bay beach are guaranteed an active view and a classic tropical beach environment.

Bordeaux Mountain

Heading down the Bordeaux Mountain trail is a breeze, and puts hikers at Little Lameshur Bay for a refreshing dip in the clear Caribbean Sea. Heading up, you’ll wish you had made other plans!

Bordeaux Mountain trail is accessible at the top of Bordeaux Mountain Road, from an often unmarked trail head, and descends steeply a little more than a mile to the bay below. Head west to the Lameshur Bay trail to get to Reef Bay, or head east down the road to Great Lameshur Bay. Remember, only the latter will have any jeep traffic, so if you’re tired and looking to hitch, don’t head to Reef Bay!

Europa Spur

Along the Lameshur Bay trail is a spur trail to Europa Bay, about a half mile in. When the Lameshur Bay trail reaches the Reef Bay trail, make a right up the Reef Bay trail just 50 yards to the Petroglyph spur trail, or make a left down the Reef Bay trail about a mile to the Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins, Reef Bay beach and greater Genti Bay.

Yawzi Point

Surprisingly named for a disease called Yaws, Yawzi Point marks the location where natives who were stricken years ago were isolated. Accessible from the Lameshur Bay beach road (between Great Lameshur Bay and Little Lameshur Bay), the Yawzi Point trail is just over a quarter mile and offers hikers a great sampling of local vegetation and breathtaking waterfront overlooks.

Almost two miles from Lameshur Bay to Reef Bay, the Lameshur Bay trail offers many points of interests to hikers. Accessible from the end of Rt. 107 (Lameshur Bay road), the trail is wide and wanders through deep forest for the first half mile, then follows a ridge called the White Cliffs for the second half, ending about a mile up from the water at the Reef Bay trail. Hikers will find massive hollow trees still standing, wild deer and mongoose, and dozens of different birds enjoying the day overhead. Hiking along the White Cliffs of Lameshur Bay trail will bring you into bright sun, so remember the sunblock when you pack that extra water.

One of the trails that are open year-round is Cinnamon Bay Trail. Dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash. With its shaded loop, this trail is beautiful and pleasant to visit anytime. This trail offers a close-up look at the old sugar factories, echoing the island’s history.

L'Esperance

You won’t find this trail on the national park hiking maps for St. John Island, but L’Esperance is one of the most interesting. Catch the entrance to L’Esperance trail on the south side of Centerline Rd. (Route 10) about a quarter mile past the Virgin Islands National Park sign at Catherineberg. Round trip, the L’Esperance trail is almost six miles, so bring plenty of water and start your hike early in the day to ensure you will return before dark. L’Esperance trail follows the Fish Bay Gut, with at least four different ruins sites not seen by many visitors. The trail veers east about halfway down and crosses over the Mollendal gut along the Sieben Ridge and down to Genti Bay, the greater area of water of which Reef Bay beach lies just to the east. You’ve hiked this far, might as well walk on over to the Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins, just beyond the forest line at the beach, and down the Reef Bay trail about a mile to the Petroglyphs spur trail.

Untouched and unspoiled are two of the best descriptions for the Brown Bay Trail. While it’s among the list of St. John, USVI, hiking trails that are not very well-maintained, it has its own charm and beauty. It leads to a private shallow cove that offers a peaceful escape. You will see starfish, conch, and loads of fish there.

Johnny Horn

Considered a moderately challenging route, Johnny Horny Trail takes about two hours to complete. It features a clear path, thanks to the foraging feral donkeys and goats in the area. This trail is steep and exposed to the sun, so you might want to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you energized. It leads to historical sites and amazing views.

Turtle Point

With the rugged natural setting of Turtle Point Trail, you are sure to experience refreshing tropical breezes and witness impressive views. It follows Hawksnest Point’s rocky shoreline and passes through a dry forest and coastal terrain. Along the path, there are strategically placed benches where you can sit and relax.

Salt Pond Drunk Bay Spur

If you’ve opted to head out to Salt Pond, one of the national park beaches along the south shore of St. John Island, and you’re looking for a nice surprise, hike the short Drunk Bay spur trail, which starts at the far east end of Salt Pond bay and follows the Salt Pond along the north side for a half mile to Drunk Bay. A flat, and sometimes hot, walk from Salt Pond, Drunk Bay offers visitors who make the trek a fun surprise.

While the rocky, rough shores of Drunk Bay are not conducive to swimming, the famous bay clearly supports, and some say prompts, creative expression. While you may not see them at first, look closely to discover dozens, then hundreds, of coral statues along the rocky beach. Using the various formations of coral along the shoreline, inspired visitors for decades have created a bevy of “coral people” using the stones to create heads, torsos, arms and legs. Partially shredded coconut for hair, sargassum weed for clothes, and crooked pieces of drift wood allow for unlimited artistic opportunities. Add your creative two cents and build your beauty at Drunk Bay.

Drunk Bay Spur

If visiting Salt Pond, take an easy, quarter-mile flat hike over to Drunk Bay. Drunk Bay shore is rocky with rough waves, but also has a surprise awaiting all who visit. It takes only some coral with a little flotsam and jetsam thrown in to make the island’s most creative outlet. Hike the short distance over to Drunk Bay to find out for yourself what everyone is talking about!

Being one of the most unique and visually stimulating St. John, USVI, hiking trails, there’s no way you should miss Ram Head Trail. This one takes you on a rocky path that leads to a blue cobble beach, the hillside, and then finally, an overlook that’s 200 feet above the Caribbean Sea.

Rental & Charter

There are a number of boat rental places in St. John that offer various cruising options, including sightseeing tours, island hopping tours, and snorkeling and diving tours. Come and enjoy the dazzling blue waters of the Caribbean while observing the splendid views and relaxing in the refreshing sea breeze.

Top Rated Virgin Island Boat Charters & Tours on TripAdvisor and Google!

My wife and I have been in St. Thomas on our honeymoon and were recommended Stormy Pirates charters for a fun day on the water. We ended up taking the 7 hour sea turtle snorkel and sunset sail tour with Brandon and Amanda and had a freaking blast! The boat was beautiful, the trip was better than described and the crew showed us a fantastic time. 10/10 would recommend and we will absolutely be coming back! Thanks guys!

My husband and I had the best time on this excursion. This was by far the highlight of our trip!! We got to see different islands and learn so much history about St John and St Thomas. The crew also had snorkel gear so we could snorkel each island we stopped at, we saw a sunken ship, sea turtles, stingrays. The crew was OUTSTANDING, Kenny and Susanna went above and beyond and made the best cocktails. This was such a wonderful experience!! Highly recommend stormy pirates. (I even changed my pick up from st Thomas to St. John and they were so accommodating)

What a way to spend a day. Met the crew at the dock, jumped on the boat, and had the time of our lives for the day. A couple of snorkel stops, a little sightseeing of the beautiful island of St. John, and then lunch at Lime Out Taco Bar. Lime Out was an excellent experience floating in the clear water surrounded by a beautiful area and eating some great tacos. This was my second trip with Stormy Pirates, and I brought the entire family as my first trip with them was great. Thanks to the crew for making this a day to remember.

We had an amazing time on their Sale Pending 2 boat. Captain Rich was funny and a really good Captain, we knew we were in good hands and safe. Tara, the crew member was so authentically attentive and caring. We had drinks all day long, sodas, water, punch, cocktails. They had fruit and muffins waiting, a scheduled pizza delivery on the boat, snorkeling equipment and the knowledge the guests needed to find sea creatures. So many small detailed extras to make the day superb!

  • Chevron down Can I reserve my rental with a deposit?

Yes, you may choose to pay a deposit of $1,000 plus fees at booking rather than the full cost. The remainder will be billed 48 hours prior to your reservation.

  • Chevron down Where do we get on the boat?

The Ocean Runner fleet is located right by the public ferry dock in Cruz Bay on St. John. If you are facing the water, just look to your left down the beach for our private floating dock. Stop in to our store Low Key Watersports is just across the street to check in. Please see our Pick Up Locations page if you would like to be picked up from a different location or for more details.

  • Chevron down What should we bring?
  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Hats and rashguards recommended
  • Waterproof bag

These items can be purchased in our retail shop at Low Key Watersports. Receive 10% Off in Our Retail Shop on Boating or Diving Days!

  • Chevron down What kinds of sunscreen can we bring?

Reef-safe sunscreens are required in the Virgin Islands as those that are not reef safe can harm or even kill the coral and wildlife. We also ask that you do not bring or use “Sport” or aerosol types of sun protection as they make the floors very slippery and they stain the upholstery. Rash Guards that have SPF built in are also an excellent option for reducing exposure to the sun. You can visit our store Low Key Watersports for a selection of reef-safe sunscreen; you even receive 10% off the day of your trip!

  • Chevron down Do we need passports?

A passport is only required if you plan on visiting the British Virgin Islands (next group of islands over). If so, passports are required for everyone on board no matter what age, and they must not be expired! If you do not have a passport there are an abundance of islands, snorkeling spots, and fun to be had within the U.S. Virgin Islands waters.

  • Chevron down Is fuel or gratuity included?

Fuel is included in the price of your rental! A 20% automatic gratuity will be added to your card on file at the conclusion of the trip.

  • Chevron down What happens if we cannot take our boat trip due to bad weather?

If bad weather causes us to cancel a trip the customer will never lose money. We will try and re-book the trip as soon as possible. If availability or your schedule will not allow re-booking, your full payment will be refunded.

  • Chevron down What if we want to cancel the reservation?

You’ll receive a full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Cancellations should be made by phone during business hours. If you must make a cancellation by email or over voicemail, please make sure to confirm receipt of your message.

Good afternoon,

Thank you so much in advance.

Thank you for the information. We are looking for something more relaxing. Nightlife isn’t super important to us. We don’t mind packing a cooler and chairs. I think I’m most concerned about driving.

Of note, you can take St Thomas rental vehicles to St John but you cannot take St John vehicles to St Thomas.

All rentals on STJ are 4WD and all St Thomas rental agencies other than Budget require you to rent a 4WD vehicle if you're staying on STJ. No need for 4WD vehicles on STT and you can get around STJ quite easily on a day trip without 4WD. Hertz was the only agency which forbade any of their vehicles going to STJ but now allow it.

I would recommend staying in Cruz Bay on STJ. I do not know your budget, but would start off by recommending staying at Grande Bay, Gallows, or the Lilac Villas on the Hill (can't remember the name). That way you are close enough to walk into Cruz Bay to enjoy a meal and shopping. From there, you could drive to the Northshore Beaches. There are plenty for you to visit. Then if you feel comfortable driving, you could venture out to further away beaches in Coral Bay and or the East End. There are also hikes you could take, or ruins to visit. I might also recommend a tour of the island with Jenn Manes at Explore STJ. It's a great way to get to know the island and its history.

As you start planning, you will find you will have more questions. Ask away. There are many helpful people here on this forum!

As a first timer, I would recommend renting a car on STJ so you do not have to worry about driving on STT and taking the car ferry over. I have never had a problem or fear of driving on the islands, but I know some people do not prefer to drive.

This is an excellent article about beach parking on STJ:

https://explorestj.com/2023/03/12/beach-parking-whats-allowed-what-will-get-you-a-ticket/

Once you get 5 minutes off the main STT roads it's a wholly different world and the variance between East, West, North and South is remarkable. Many who visit STJ see nothing more of STT than those busy main roads between the airport and the Red Hook ferry terminal which leads them to believe that STT is nothing more than an unattractive and congested urban blight! It's not.

This is so helpful. Thank you.

That article is so helpful. I saved it. I did read somewhere that parking could be difficult.

Thank you for being so helpful. It’s really appreciated.

STJ is just a magical place. STT has some decent spots but it is busier, more crowded and for me it does not compare. "STT Resident" will fiercy refute this of course but it's my opinion and I am sticking to it. Yes, I have been to both places many times over the years. We cannot wait to get back over to STJ. It's a very short 10 minute boat ride from a place called Red Hook. Let us know what you decide and if you have any other questions, you are in the right place. STJ for the win- easily.
