They’re used by all types of boats from motor yachts and sailboats to small runabouts to prevent damage to paint, varnish, gunwales and hulls overall. 1. Choose the Right Size Fender(s)
You should size your fenders according to the size and type of your boat . The general rule of thumb is the smaller the boat, the less length and diameter is needed in a fender. That said, too small of a fender won’t protect your hull and can even get smashed when attached to too large of a boat.
For generic vinyl fenders, consulting a boat fender size chart can help—and there may be an applicable size range printed on the label of most fenders that are for sale.
2. Determine Proper Placement and Height
Most place or "hang" their fenders by spacing them equally. What you really need to do is to place them along the widest part of the hull, since that will most likely touch whatever you are docking next to first. Again, there are exceptions.
- If you dock with only your bow next to a jetty, then you’ll want most of your fenders there.
- Sometimes, you’ll need a fender when backing into a slip to avoid hitting the transom on the dock.
You'll also want to consider the height at which you hang the fender (or how high along the hull the fender is when tied on). How high or low the fender ends up is based on the dock or piling you're working with. Depending on the tide, fixed docks may present a too high or too low danger to your boat.

If you have to tie a line to a fender yourself, a good knot to use is the bowline —as it’s strong, creates a loop that will go through one eye of the fender, and can be untied if needed even when serious strain has been applied to the line. Once a line is securely attached to a fender, you’ll rarely be untying it.
To tie a fender line to a boat (which is done every time you dock), the clove hitch will be a good choice.
- For many boats, you can attach a fender line to a cleat on your boat or on a dock (say, at a strategic and menacing dock corner). In this case, tie a simple cleat hitch that’s easy to put on and take off even with a significant load or when saltwater makes the line stiff.
- Many powerboats also tie fender lines to their guard railing and the clove hitch is ideal because it can slide along the rail to adjust placement at the last minute if needed.
- That said, to prevent damage to the overall railing, it’s best to tie fender lines to the bottom of stanchions where the railing is strongest with a lower leverage point (this applies to sailboats especially).
- Sometimes you can tie a line to either end of a fender and use it horizontally. This will cover a broader section of the hull but it works best when fending off a protruding vertical piling, for example.

- Vinyl fenders are typically cylindrical and inexpensive but when large, can be heavy. They get scuffed over time and tend to be hard to clean and harder to store.
That said, these make up the bulk of the fenders you’ll see in a marina and are used almost exclusively by small craft like sailboats, bowriders and pontoon boats.
Foam fenders
- These come in different shapes, often flat, so they don’t take up much room in a tight slip, which is helpful since fenders add width to your overall beam.
- They’re hard to store, especially when they’re large and they’re expensive. Also, the foam can disintegrate over time polluting the water and marking your hull.
Inflatable fenders
- These are made of various materials including PVC (like some dinghies).
- Because you can deflate them for storage, even large ones can be accommodated aboard.
- They’re typically lightweight and strong but quite expensive.
- Most of these are used by larger vessels that travel long distances and need to store them easily while under way.

Additional Tips for Deploying Fenders in Certain Situations
There are some unique situations which will require individual judgement:
Rafting up to another boat will require both vessels to have fenders, if possible. If the boats are of different heights, it’s best to put one set of fenders lower and the other higher off the waterline.
Rafting Up 101
Catamarans (or Boats with Less Curvature)
Boats with less hull curvature (like catamarans ) can touch farther down, near the waterline, so adjust as needed. Upon departure, be careful that the fenders don’t get tangled in one another. In that case, you may want to remove a few before departure so there’s less chaos.
Smaller Boats & Personal Watercraft (PWC)
Some smaller boats or personal watercrafts (PWCs) will have a fitting on the hull or deck that will allow you to “pop in” a fender that has a matching appendage at the end of its line. This is a bit rare but perfect because the fenders are preset for maximum protection of the hull and deck and can be added quickly even by those who can’t tie an effective knot. Many of these fenders are L-shaped to wrap around the hull/deck joint and are primarily used with small boats.
Finally, Don't Forget to Remove Your Fenders Once Underway
Once you're ready to get back underway, take up and stow your fenders. Many boaters who cruise with their fenders down take the risk of having one ripped off by a wayward wave. They also tend to be the butt of jokes by many experienced boaters, since they’re known as “landlubbers washing their bumpers.”

FENDER SIZING GUIDE
The Polyform US Fender Guide should be used as a general guide. Common sense, as well as an understanding of your boat and mooring conditions, must be considered. The final responsibility has to be taken by the consumer due to many variables out of Polyform's control.
FENDERING TIPS
FENDER TIPS
Use at least three fenders when docking.
- Tie fenders to something solid like a stanchion base or deck cleat along the rail.
- Always hang fenders close enough to the surface of the water.
- Do not tie the fenders high. This could allow them to swing in a wide arc, causing them to end up on top of the dock rather than between the boat's hull and the dock where they're needed.
- One fender at aft.
- One fender at maximum beam.
- One fender at fore.
Polyform fenders and buoys should be stored in a safe place out of direct sunlight.
- When rafting, the best fendering technique is to have the fenders in place on the boat already moored or at anchor.
- Position three standard fenders fairly close to maximum beam.
- Position two round A Series or LD Series buoys fore and aft to provide greater protection from boats tossing into each other.
FENDER LINE TIPS
It's important to use the proper size line (diameter) based on the size of the fender and the ropehold. We recommend when using a single line nothing less than 3/8" diameter for the smaller fenders up to as large as 1" depending upon the size of the fender and the diameter of the ropehold. When using a looped connection or doubling the line 1/4" for smaller ropeholds and 3/8" for larger ropeholds is recommended. The idea is that you want to fill as much of the diameter of the ropehold with the line in order to disperse the load over the greatest area of the ropehold.
Using a line diameter that is too small can act like a knife and abrade or create friction on a single point in the ropehold causing the ropehold to crack or tear. We prefer and recommend nylon rope over other types because of its stretch properties. It is a little more forgiving and softer creating less friction. Remember, rope is much stronger than the PVC our fenders are made from, and always wins in the end.

Boat fenders offer essential protection for yachts or anything afloat, when they come in to contact with harbour walls, pontoons, pilings and other yachts.
Dock fenders, also known as bumpers, are permanently fitted to the pontoon or dock in areas of frequent use e.g. the pontoon in your allotted marina berth.
Boat fenders are relatively inexpensive compared with gelcoat or even structural yacht repairs so it makes sense to have an adequate quantity of the correct size and configuration onboard.
Boat fenders come in several different shapes and a multitude of different sizes to safeguard the topsides, the bow or stem and the stern of any design of watercraft.
Calculate the optimum number of fenders according to their shape and size in preparation for your typical mooring conditions, whether in your home berth or visiting other ports or marinas. Then add some extra for use in severe conditions. Bear in mind that although more fenders are always going to be useful, they will all need to be stowed onboard securely.
Jimmy Green Marine offer two main types of boat fender which cover most mooring situations:
Cylindrical fenders with a rope eye at both ends can be hung vertically when mooring against predominantly flat harbour walls, docks and pontoons or horizontally against pilings and other awkward protrusions.
Round or pear shaped fenders with one rope eye are very similar to mooring buoys and can be hung vertically for heavy load points and where extra diameter is required to allow for a yacht’s fore and aft curve. They are also usefully deployed to protect the stern platform when mooring stern to.
Other types include bow fenders
Plus through hole fenders, transom corner fenders, specialist flat narrow boat fenders and large inflatable fenders for larger yachts.
Take these factors into account when selecting the appropriate size for your fenders: Yacht Length Overall, Yacht Displacement (weight) and the anticipated mooring conditions
There is an old fashioned rule of thumb that will give you a starting point before making a final decision based on these three main factors.
Rule of Thumb 1 = 1 inch fender diameter or 2 inch round fender diameter for every 4 or 5 feet of yacht length overall.
The rule has been interpreted and converted approximately into modern metric equivalents in the table:

How to set up your fenders.
There is another old rule of thumb for judging how many boat fenders does a boat need – 1 fender per 10 feet of Low Waterline Length (LWL) with a minimum of 3 for boats of 20 feet or less. The rule has been developed into a modern metric measure equivalent.
Fenders need to be deployed in a proper fashion paying due care and attention to the spacing and height of the fenders and an assessment of how many of the total should be round rather than cylindrical fenders.
Deploy at least one fender amidships (maximum beam) with the remainder spaced appropriately fore and aft from the centre outward.
When mooring alongside another yacht (rafting up) an extra fender or two amidships will be required for adequate protection. An extra round fender deployed fore and aft will help to take up the increased gap between the topsides.
Hang fenders so that they are always just clear of the water or higher where required because of the pontoon height. Secure the fender lanyards to strong, deck level anchorage points. Avoid using lifelines or guard wires if possible because they are not designed to withstand the potential stresses and strains. A lower attachment point maintains the fender in position better by lessening the arc or swing.
Cleaning Fenders
Keep your fenders clean and free from harmful grit by washing with soap and water. Harsh cleaning agents are not advisable as they will harm the surface of the fender.
Fender covers are washable and help to keep your fenders clean and grit free as well as protecting them from the elements.

Fendertex Fenders are constructed using patented textile technology, designed to withstand immense amounts of pressure while being highly resistant to UV degradation and color fading. The construction of the fender allows it to retain it's shape and pressure in extreme temperature fluctuations and under heavy load.
CYLINDRICAL FENDERS
Cylindrical fenders are the most common fender shape. Built with 316 Stainless Steel D-rings on the top, this fender is designed to be positioned vertically. Horizontal positioning is only available with the Long Side cover option.
SPHERICAL FENDERS
Spherical Fenders are wide and cover a large surface area, making them ideal for application such as docking or use as a rover fender.
TANDEM FENDERS
Tandem fenders are designed for swim platforms or exceptionally curved hulls where a cylindrical or spherical fender could roll. The dual-tube design gives a stable structure to the fender which prevents it from rolling while also protecting a larger hull area.
The Softdock is designed to mount directly to a dock, swim platform, or garage in place of traditionally hung fenders. Fitted with adjustable mounting straps and lengths up to 30 feet.

ABOARD BRP SINDANGAN (AP) — It was a heart-pounding moment far out in the disputed South China Sea: One of at least five Chinese coast guard ships aggressively approached and sideswiped a Philippine patrol vessel, creating a loud, jarring noise that sent its Filipino crew scrambling to lower rubber fenders to cushion the boat’s hull.
As the high-seas faceoff unfolded Tuesday, two Chinese coast guard ships used water cannons against a smaller supply boat carrying a Filipino admiral and his sailors. The high-pressure spray shattered the boat’s windshield and mildly injured the admiral and four sailors with glass shards and splinters of debris.
“That’s very concerning and very worrisome,” Vice Adm. Alberto Carlos later told reporters, after witnessing firsthand the Chinese actions against the supply boat Unaizah Mae 4, which he was aboard.
As the highest-ranking Filipino military commander overseeing the disputed waters, Carlos joined the trip to ensure that any confrontation would not spiral out of control, the navy said.

It was the latest showdown in one of the world’s most hotly disputed waters that many fear could descend into a larger conflict that puts the United States and China on a collision course.
Tuesday’s hostilities off the Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal lasted about five hours starting after dawn and were witnessed by two Associated Press journalists. The journalists were invited to join the trip aboard the Philippine coast guard ship BRP Sindangan , which was sideswiped by the Chinese coast guard ship in a tense and dangerous moment they caught on camera.
The Philippines adopted a strategy last year of exposing China’s increasingly assertive actions in the disputed sea by embedding journalists on its coast guard patrol ships. Manila said the “transparency campaign” aims to pressure China to abide by international law, including anti-collision regulations.
It has publicly released coast guard videos and photos of dangerous Chinese actions against Philippine forces, including the use by China’s coast guard of a military-grade laser that temporarily blinded Filipino crew in an incident last year that angered Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The campaign has sparked a war of words with Beijing, which has accused the Philippines of hyping up the disputes and allowing itself to be used as a pawn in U.S. efforts to contain China’s rise.
Aboard the BRP Sindangan, the journalists witnessed up close how a mission to deliver food, water and other supplies to a long-marooned warship was partly thwarted by a Chinese blockade of at least 26 ships, including coast guard and suspected militia vessels.
They caught on video and camera how the Chinese ships shadowed, surrounded and blocked the two Philippine coast guard ships and two small supply boats carrying Filipino sailors to the disputed shoal.

Aside from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims in the resource-rich and busy waterway, where a bulk of the world’s commerce and oil transits.
Beijing claims almost the entire sea, a key global trade route. In the last decade, China has turned barren reefs into seven islands that now serve as missile-protected island bases, including three with runways, that have bolstered its capability to fortify its territorial claims and patrols.
In response, Washington has been strengthening an arc of military alliances in the Indo-Pacific, including with the Philippines, Vietnam and other countries at odds with China in the disputed sea.
After China effectively seized another disputed atoll, the Scarborough Shoal off the northwestern Philippines, in 2012, Manila brought its disputes with Beijing to international arbitration and largely won. China, however, rejected the 2016 ruling of the U.N.-backed tribunal that invalidated its expansive claims on historical grounds and continues to defy the decision.
Filipino officials said the latest confrontation was particularly serious because of the injuries sustained by its navy personnel and damage to their vessel.

“The systematic and consistent manner in which the People’s Republic of China carries out these illegal and irresponsible actions completely negates any of its calls for peaceful dialogue and de-escalation of tensions in the West Philippine Sea,” Jonathan Malaya, a spokesperson for a Philippine government task force dealing with the South China Sea disputes, told a news conference on Wednesday, using the Philippine name for the long-troubled waters.
China blamed the Philippines for the hostilities.
“China has unwavering determination and will in safeguarding its legitimate rights. The Philippines’ attempt of making infringements and provocations will not succeed,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said Wednesday in Beijing.
After the U.S. repeated a warning that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines, its longtime treaty ally, in case of an armed attack, Mao urged Washington “to refrain from using the Philippines as a pawn to destabilize the South China Sea.”
In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the latest incidents demonstrated China’s “reckless disregard for the safety of Filipinos and also for international law,” and that China was interfering with “lawful Philippine maritime operations.”
Filipino officials said they would continue to assert Philippine rights in the disputed sea.
“We continue to view with great alarm the continuing dangerous maneuvers and dangerous actions,” Marcos told reporters Wednesday in Melbourne, Australia, where he attended a Southeast Asian summit that had the territorial disputes high on its agenda .
