This unique and beautifully designed Bowman 45 is a hand-crafted yacht built and equipped for long distance blue water cruising. She has proven herself with two circumnavigations, six Atlantic crossings and a competitive track record for ocean racing in her day. Designed by the legendary Holman and Pye and built by Bowman Yachts (Emsworth, UK) in 1977, launched 78, she is a renowned, heavy displacement yacht that will take you anywhere. Traditional GRP hull and deck construction with foam insulation, fin keel (4.5 tons ballast), skeg hung rudder and a beautiful new synthetic teak deck laid in 2019.

Moonshiner underwent an extensive refit in 2022/23 at a cost of over £150000 ($290000) for a short-handed cruise from the UK to Sydney. Highlights of her upgrade include new standing and running rigging, new engine, new mainsail, complete re-wire with renewables, 2 new chart plotters, autohelm, radar, all new hatches and upholstery. Hull below the waterline was completely cleaned and freshly antifouled along with new anodes in October 2023.

This cutter-rigged yacht was Chuck Paine’s third design for Bowman, and his hallmarks can be seen all over the boat. Many were fi tted out to an owner’s custom requirements – and one even had a piano installed! As one would expect from a Bowman, she is a seaworthy boat with a solid and well-crafted interior, and a successful ocean cruiser. Her windward performance was uninspiring, however.

Grabau International  is delighted to announce the new listing of the  2001 Rival Bowman 45 ‘PETER PAN’.

A classic example of one of the most legendary bluewater yachts of all time. Extensively refitted and highly specified for serious short-handed offshore adventures.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

With just three owners since new and only around 8 years of actual sailing under her keel, PETER PAN is a custom-built example of the highly desirable Chuck Paine designed Bowman 45.

Fitting in above the Bowman 42 (a development of the iconic Bowman 40) and below the Bowman 48, the Bowman 45 was a design derivative of the US-built Morris Yachts 44. With two inches added to her draft and four inches added to her topsides (to improve internal volume), this enormously capable bluewater yacht design was manufactured to Lloyds specifications in Southampton by Rival Bowman Yachts from the late 1990’s through to their purchase by Rustler Yachts in 2002 and then offered as an option by Rustler Yachts thereafter.

Fully-equipped for short-handed bluewater sailing, PETER PAN has been extensively updated and refitted in recent seasons ahead of a now-completed Atlantic circuit. Offered for sale with a comprehensive inventory including all spares and toys, she is also extremely well priced to attract a quick and simple sale.

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

PETER PAN is the most recent in a long line of 25 yachts I have owned through the years, the previous being a 65’ McCurdy & Rhodes aluminium ketch and a number of Hallberg-Rassys before that. Despite being used to larger yachts, I fell in love with the concept, history and build quality of the Bowman design and decided that I must have one before I move on to fresh projects.

Originally ordered from Rival Bowman Yachts for a German owner PETER PAN (formerly named ELISE) was Hull No.6 and custom finished with a modified forward cabin arrangement (providing a very useful large seperated forward sail store locker). Her owner sailed her from the UK to the Caribbean where she remained for two or three seasons before returning to Europe via the Azores where her EU VAT was paid. Sailing on to the Med’, she was then stored ashore out of commission for around 10yrs due to her owner falling ill.

Purchased by her second (Dutch) owner in 2016 for a planned Atlantic circuit, she was fully recommissioned and refitted with a full overhaul of her engine, new prop-shaft, new Raymarine plotters and AIS, new sprayhood and custom bimini, new lazybag for the mainsail, new anchor windlass, new pumps, EPIRB and fitment of a watermake. Her original teak deck was removed, and replaced by a non-slip finish for future low-maintenance.

Having decided upon the Bowman as my final boat, I found PETER PAN in the Caribbean in 2019. A deal was agreed with her Dutch owner, and I sailed her (in the continued ownership of her Dutch owner) single-handed from St.Martin to the Azores where the sale was then officially completed, thereby ensuring that her original EU VAT-paid status was preserved. I then sailed on to the Med and to Barcelona.

Having only seen around 8 years of actual usage, and having benefitted from some significant updates and upgrades in the last few years, PETER PAN is a great option for anyone looking to head off on a big ocean adventure. I am now living outside of Europe and with new projects taking up my time outside of yachting, so PETER PAN is offered for sale fully-equipped with all spares, tools, watertoys, fold-up bikes etc included.

BUILDER’S COMMENTS:

An outstanding long distance cruising yacht boasting many of the highly praised interior features of her bigger sister the Bowman 48.

Offering genuine luxury accommodation, the Bowman 45 has been developed to explore the oceans of the world in safety and comfort while giving her owner complete confidence in her ability to handle any conditions she may encounter.

As with all Bowman yachts, the interior of the 45 can be tailored to an owner’s specification which provides each and every Bowman with that special custom-built character. An array of opening ports and hatches provide plenty of fresh air and daylight. Forward facing windows in the main saloon add a welcome brightness to the living area.

THE RIVAL BOWMAN STORY:

“ Peter Gregory of Victoria Yachts never tired of finding ways to attract customers. For the 1983 London Boat Show he came up with an idea of stationing his designer at a drafting table in the act of designing yachts.

I had my weather eye open for a new British customer and Rival yachts were at the top of my list. Their previous designer had passed away and the time would come when they would want a new design. I didn’t want to be an ambulance chaser so struggled with how I would introduce myself without appearing overly aggressive. I was spared the trouble.

Just in case an opportunity might arise I decided to spend my time stuck at that drafting table sketching my idea of the next Rival Yacht. The largest yacht in the Rival line was a 41 footer and the next smaller a 38 so I figured 40 feet was about right. I had the sketch just about finished on my 3rd day standing at Peter’s drafting table when 2 impeccably dressed “city types” walked over and peered down curiously at what I was doing. It turns out they both owned Rival 36s and were at Earls Court looking at larger boats. They loved their Rival 36s and would have preferred to stay with the same builder if only he had something larger. They took one look at my sketch and they had the answer. They dragged me and my sketch over to the Rival stand and introduced me to Charles Maunder, the Managing Director of Rival Yachts. They said in unison “Charles, if you build this design and add it to your line, we’ll both order one.”

The first Bowman 40 was introduced at the London Boat Show a year later. I had already seen it earlier that fall, when I flew over for sea trials. They had that first boat in the water and the first thing Charles said was “It floats 2 inches deeper than you said it would.” I said “It can’t possibly” But I took the freeboards and he was right. I had done all my laborious calculations using a VisiCalc estimate in excruciating detail – how could it possibly be that much heavier? They explained that of course they could not build the boat to the scantlings I had shown on my American style construction plans. “We can’t build boats as lightly as your drawings showed – to sell boats on Britain we have to use Lloyds scantlings” And that was the answer. Lloyds scantlings assumed the use of more fibreglass mat and less woven roving than we were used to using in America. And since mat is weaker than roving, you have to use more of it to achieve adequate strength. I even considered making some concession to Charles on the royalty to compensate for my failure to estimate the weight correctly but fortunately I held my tongue.

Then we sailed the boat. It was windy, as it always is on the Solent on the fall and the boat stood up to all that wind beautifully and went like a train on rails. Charles was overjoyed with the way it sailed – much faster than the former Brett designs. The boot-top was repainted two inches higher on the hull, the displacement figure was changed on the sales brochures and Bowman Yachts went on to build more than fifty of the yachts and came back to me for 3 more designs.”
