Vandal: In the driving seat of Tenderworks' 14m chase boat

The Vandal, an artfully designed supercar of the seas, puts the yacht owner at the wheel, and guest comfort at a premium. Risa Merl enjoys a dry run.

It’s one of those fresh Côte d’Azur days when the wind is blowing just as hard as the sun is shining. The kind of day that will leave you covered in salt spray, and certainly spilling your cocktail, if you dare to cruise at speeds of 40 knots, as we are doing on board the new 14-metre Vandal chase boat. My hosts apologise for the blustery weather, but I am secretly grateful for it since it will allow me to see what this boat – designed for an exceptionally dry ride – is really capable of.

We head out of Port Grimaud bound for Pampelonne beach, passing Saint-Tropez along the way. As we round the point, the wind kicks up even more. We pass tenders that are bouncing erratically over the waves, yet the Vandal zips along, cutting through the water with her vertical bow. Make no mistake, the ride is exhilarating. A smile is fixed on my face as I perch at the helm, yet it’s also extremely comfortable and dry. Even on the aft sunpads, I don’t feel a single splash, and upon returning to port there isn’t one drop of water on the forward deck.

“This isn’t a race car, it’s a supercar – you go as fast possible, but in comfort,” says Ernest Menten, co-founder of Vandal and the custom tender builder Tenderworks, both based in the Netherlands. The car analogies run thick as the boat’s builders and designers discuss their new boat. With a beautifully curvaceous exterior crafted by  RWD , which counts automotive designers among its staff, the Vandal was inspired by supercars.

The brief was for a fast, open boat with strong yet simple lines. Built entirely of carbon fibre, with titanium detailing, the Vandal is a study in organic shapes. “We wanted it to feel like you had started with one massive block of carbon and we were chiselling away at it to create this boat,” says Adrian Chisnell of RWD. “All of the elements needed to feel connected in some way. To create that in a carbon boat is unbelievably hard because you have to join the boat to the deck at some point.”

The result is one simple and sensuous form. It is nearly impossible to see where the hull and bulwarks end and the bimini top – which mimics the air intake of an F1 car – begins. It’s not merely about looks, though: the bimini is sturdy, stiff and well-proportioned to the boat itself. “The bimini stood up on its own before it was fitted. The centre of gravity was in exactly the right place,” says Chisnell.

The Vandal is one of those rare boats that looks beautiful on the water – turning heads with her soft curves and white-to-grey ombré paint job – yet is even more interesting when you get up close. Every piece is properly finished; every hinge, handle and cleat is hidden. “Like a very good car, all the shut lines are carefully placed and hard to see, and a lot of the hinges are custom made,” Chisnell says. Other elements, like the cap on the flagpole that has a V for Vandal, were 3D printed in-house. A recess line runs around 60mm below the top of the inside bulwark, which creates space for a titanium handhold to be concealed. With LED-lit insets under the seats and cabinetry, the furnishings in the cockpit look as if they are floating.

The stepped hull was courtesy of  Farr Yacht Design , the Maryland-based firm known for creating racing yachts for the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race. And powered by twin MarineDiesel VGT500 engines, the Vandal reaches a top speed of 45-plus knots, cruises comfortably at 35 to 40 knots, and at 30 knots she can travel 360 nautical miles. “The owner could say to his captain ‘I’ll see you in Portofino’ and meet his superyacht there,” Menten says. This is the essence of what Vandal is trying to create – a boat that looks great, moves well and gives the owner a taste of freedom. “A lot of superyacht owners are stuck on their boats,” he says. “They always have the best, of course, but that comes with having a lot of crew and people around them.”

Menten says there are owners who enjoy luxury but also want to get behind the wheel. “At home, they might get picked up by a Bentley, but they don’t drive it themselves. Instead they have a garage full of supercars which they take out,” he says. Vandal seeks to fill a niche in the market, for a chase boat that an owner will be proud to drive – and have fun doing it.

One owner was so taken by the Vandal that they have ordered two for their in-build 90-metre-plus Feadship: one limo tender and one customised open Vandal. The latter is almost identical to the standard model, but its roof lowers so it can fit snugly in the tender garage. “The tender is often an afterthought. We did it the other way around – we built a big boat with the tenders in mind,” says Captain Niels Ackermans of the  Feadship  project. “It’s a real boat, not a little tender. We can turn it from a supercar to adventurer – stocked with all the scuba diving gear. If you want to go to a dive site 10 miles away it’s not a problem, and you can do it all in comfort.”

Chisnell says the Vandal is “for people who understand boating, who understand refinement”. Menten echoes this sentiment, and though he doesn’t want to give an exact price, it’s implied that the Vandal is much more expensive than your typical chase boat. “You could certainly buy a cheaper boat,” says Chisnell, “but anyone who wants to have one of these will know as soon as they lay eyes on it.”

The R14m is designed for long distance cruising with an easily driven hull of moderate beam and displacement,long waterline and veed sections which ensures very good sailing performance and directional stablility.

Kit Assembly

The R14m was the first of the full aluminium kit yachts which followed on from the R1000 Series steel cruising yachts and a number of custom aluminium and steel yachts which were built using the same design and construction techniques. The Aluminium Kit Construction section describes the characteristics of the R14m hull, general design considerations, plus assembly, typical plates and components and materials list.

The first 14m kit was cut by Northwest Plasma Cutting in Seattle, WA, USA. Northwind Marine in Seattle, WA, USA built the hull and deck to lockup stage before shipping to Canada for the interior fitout. On completion, the yacht was delivered to the owner in Juneau, Alaska. Northwest has also cut 2 14m kits for Canadian clients.

On the R14m, complete aluminium structure of the hull and deck was 3D computer modelled, then broken down into individual components and nested onto standard size plates ready for plasma cutting using NC files. The components cut includes all the frames, floors, keel floors, watertight bulkheads, keel plating, rudder and skeg, transom, deck, house and cockpit plating, hatch coamings, internal window frames, bow fitting, backbone and stem, keel base, bulwark - everything except the hull plating. All the notches for hull stringers and longitudinals were cut into the frames and floors for easy assembly.

The aim of this design was to produce a capable cruising yacht with twin cabins, large galley and a saloon where you can sit down and still see out the windows. An inside steering position is located at the forward end of the starboard saloon settee. Considerable stowage space is available outboard of the settees under the side decks. The chart table is located at the aft end of the pilot house just inside the companionway. Aft of the chart table is a quarter berth - or more stowage lockers if required. The window option shows deck hatches in either side of the pilot house for extra ventilation. There are opening ports in the forward house plus an array of hatches in the house tops. Deck Layout

The pilot house extends over the forward end ofthe 2m long cockpit to give excellent weather protection for the companionway and cockpit seats. It is possible to see over the pilot house when standing at the wheel or seated on the aft coaming -which incorporates a liferaft locker.

For those seeking greater sun protection, it is possible to have a part or fully covered cockpit and still sail. There is plenty of stowage space with coaming and cockpit lockers, gas bottle locker in the side deck and a large lazarette. The lazarette is accessed by two deck hatches and is divided from the accommodation by a watertight bulkhead. Transom step leads to the boarding platform. The deck edge has a bulwark - 100 to 200mm high - instead of an aluminium toerail. Forward, a collision bulkhead separates the anchor locker and self-draining chain locker from the forward cabin. The anchor winch is aft of the collision bulkheads to protect the electrics. The anchor can be left stowed on the bow rollers during shorter trips, or in the anchor locker.

The keel stepped fractional rig has double swept back spreaders, chainplates at the deck edge for extra support, a furling jib and in-boom furling main. There are no overlapping working sails and optional runners for easy handling. Use the navigation aids at the top of the page to view the sail plan of the R14m.

Based on the loading requirements of liquids, stores and extra equipment for a cruising yacht of 40 - 48ft (which can be from 2,600 to 3,000kg) the following information shows the range of loading and changes in waterlines.

The hull structure is designed to the A.B.S. Guide for Offshore Racing Yachts which was regularly used for defining structures which have been approved for passenger charter. The hull frame &floor spacings vary depending on local loadings and the accommodation layout. Intermediate floors and longitudinals are installed inway of the keel, engine and mast step. The materials list for the R14m can be found at Aluminium Kit Construction .

The maximum hull speed of the R14m, at Speed / Length Ratio (S/L) = 1.34, is 8.83 knots. An efficient cruising speed is at S/L = 1.1, or 7.24 knots. The list shows the required shaft horsepower (SHP) for different speeds at 12,872kg (28,380lb) displacement. Note the rapid increase in required SHP (hence fuel consumption) for small gains in speed.

Based on a speed requirement, select an engine which - running at an optimum RPM - will give the required SHP for that speed.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.

The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.

Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8. The Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
