The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Eye On Annapolis

Can we bend over any more for the Annapolis Yacht Club?

annapolis yacht club fees

On December 12th, the Annapolis Yacht Club suffered a devastating fire . The building looks to be destroyed and 150 employees’ earnings were in peril. It was a tragic, unfortunate, and insured accident.

The service industry is a tight-knit group and they quickly came to the table with offers of employment for displaced employees. This was a noble (if not self serving) gesture. It is what communities do in times of need. And then it got weird.

From County Exec Steve Schuh Facebook

But let me take a selfie first

On Sunday the 13th, Governor Larry Hogan, County Executive Steve Schuh, and Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides held a hastily called photo op press conference and pledged to do whatever they could to assist the yacht club in their rebuilding and to secure employment for their employees. Then, they took some time to use a County fire truck to take a selfie atop the rubble of the yacht club. There is no word on how MOSH or OSHA felt about the three politicians in a bucket without helmets or belts to secure themselves.

Photo: Capital Gazette

Heaping praise for a job well done

Later that week, a bevy of politicians met at the firehouse to recognize the heroic actions of the firefighters who put out the fire. These were not passersby. These were well trained public servants who did their job exactly as they were trained to do. In fact, the fire was rather routine–even the fire chief said it was a “textbook fire.” It was not at all like the mansion fire in January of 2015 that killed 6. Initially I wondered if it was a new political agenda as we are coming into an election year and all. Would there be press conferences to thank the police officer who pulled me over when the front license plate fell off my car? What about the four other fires in the county that left actual people homeless in the weeks that followed? Surely the politicians would be there offering all the resources they could muster to assist. They were going to help me find the best place to buy a new frame to hold my license plate right? Right?

A community tragedy?

And then, it got even more weird when Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides praised the community for coming together to help the Annapolis Yacht Club.

The recent fire at the Annapolis Yacht Club was a tragedy for our entire community. This Annapolis institution is not only an economic engine for our city but a part of the historic fabric that makes Annapolis so special.

I think I just vomited a little bit.

When was the last time a resident of Harbor House or Newtowne 20 was able to partake in that historic fabric by noshing on a burger at the Annapolis Yacht Club? The club has 1,600 members who pay $11,000 to join in addition to monthly dues and a required monthly minimum for food. Annapolis has a population of 38,722 (according to 2013 Census Department numbers). So, was this really a tragedy for the “ entire community ” or just the 4.1% that might belong?

Let’s be honest here for a moment and do the math (ignoring the fact that AYC reaches far beyond the incorporated City limits)–37,122 people in the City of Annapolis have never been to the Annapolis Yacht Club and are not members. And I might go so far to say that the majority of those people are not even welcome to join the ranks.

So Mr. Mayor,  exactly how is this business loss a “tragedy for the entire community “? I might suggest that if there was a fire on Main Street that burned down a block and many businesses that were accessible to the public , might be a tragedy for the entire community . Perhaps if City Hall or the Roger “Pip” Moyer Recreation center burned it might be a tragedy for the entire community . If there was the loss of life of one of our police officers or firefighters in the line of duty it would be a tragedy for the entire community .  But a fire at the Annapolitan Club, Peerless Rens, Eastport Democratic Club, and yes…the Annapolis Yacht Club is NOT a tragedy for the entire community. It is a tragedy for the members of those private (and arguably exclusionary) organizations.

From AYC to Harbor Grill

the-harbor-grill-and

And to add insult to injury, the owners of Harbor Grill simply terminated all of their employees on Thursday to make way for the yacht club employees. Yet there is nary a peep from any politician looking to help out these 30 people that are now jobless. Are Annapolis Yacht Club employees more worthy than Harbor Grill employees? It certainly seems so.

UPDATE 1/12/2016:  The Capital is reporting that the management of The Harbor Grill has agreed to relocate employees to other restaurants or pay them a 2 week severance.

Save Annapolis

save annapolis

As the Annapolis Yacht Club looks to rebuild, to what lengths will the City, County and State go to assist them? Will they be required to sprinkler the building? Will waterfront construction regulations be eased for this institution that is the “historic fabric of Annapolis”? Additional inspectors to minimize delays?

Maybe I am wrong. Hopefully I am wrong. Maybe this is the start of a real community building effort brought to you by Governor Hogan, County Executive Schuh, and Mayor Pantelides. Maybe it is a start. Maybe they will be looking at how to make our communities better and are just starting with the yacht club. Maybe they will be addressing the violence in Eastport, the break-ins city wide, the drug use and trade happening all over the state.  Yeah, maybe….

Annapolis Yacht Club: Sailing Tradition and Community Excellence

Nestled along the shores of Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis Yacht Club is a historic institution that has been at the forefront of sailing tradition and community excellence since its founding in 1886. With a storied history spanning over a century, this iconic yacht club has played a vital role in the development and promotion of the sport of sailing, not only in Maryland but across the United States. Boasting a thriving community of sailors, racers, and boating enthusiasts, the Annapolis Yacht Club offers a wide range of programs and events designed to foster camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a love for the sea. In this article, we'll take a closer look at the history and legacy of the Annapolis Yacht Club, as well as the many ways in which it continues to promote and advance the art of sailing to this day.

annapolis yacht club fees

From Humble Beginnings to International Recognition

The Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) was founded in 1886 by a group of avid sailors who were passionate about the sport of sailing. The club was initially situated on Spa Creek in Annapolis, Maryland, and had a small number of members. The primary objective of the founding members was to promote the sport of sailing, conduct regattas, and encourage social interaction among sailors. In its early days, the club organized several races around Annapolis to promote sailing as a sport. These races were initially held in small boats, and over time, the size of the boats increased as the popularity of the sport grew. The initial membership fee for joining the club was $5 a year, which was quite affordable for most people at the time. As the years went by, the club's membership began to grow, and so did its reputation. In the 1920s, the club built a larger clubhouse that could accommodate more members and provide them with better facilities. This marked a significant turning point for the club as it began to attract members from outside of Annapolis. During World War II, the club played an essential role in the war effort. Several club members joined the Navy, and the club's facilities were used to train naval officers in navigation and seamanship. After the war, the club resumed its activities, and membership continued to grow. In the 1950s, the club began to organize regional sailing events and hosted many prestigious regattas. During this period, AYC became known for its competitive racing and excellent facilities. The club also became a hub for social activities, hosting several events throughout the year, including formal balls, dinners, and cocktail parties.

annapolis yacht club fees

The Annapolis Yacht Club's success can be attributed to its commitment to excellence, community, and tradition. The club's members are passionate about sailing and have worked hard to maintain the club's reputation as one of the leading sailing clubs in the world. The club's facilities are second to none, and its racing and junior sailing programs continue to produce champions. Looking towards the future, the Annapolis Yacht Club plans to continue its commitment to promoting the sport of sailing and providing excellent facilities for its members. The club is in the process of renovating its main clubhouse to provide even more space for its members and enhance their dining experience. The club also plans to expand its junior sailing program and invest in new boats and equipment.

The Evolution of a Community Institution and its Impact on the Sport of Sailing

The Annapolis Yacht Club's evolution as a community institution can be traced back to its founding in 1886. At that time, the club had a small number of members and modest facilities. However, as the popularity of sailing grew in the Annapolis community, so did the club's membership and activities. AYC has been a fixture in the Annapolis community for over a century. It is a private club, but membership is open to anyone who shares a passion for sailing and the water. In the early days, AYC organized regattas on Spa Creek, promoting the sport and building camaraderie among local sailors. As the club's reputation grew, it attracted sailors from other parts of the country, and its race schedule expanded to include regional events. By the 1920s, the AYC had outgrown its original clubhouse, and it built a new facility that could accommodate a growing membership. The club's focus shifted towards social events, and it began to host formal balls, dinners, and cocktail parties throughout the year. These events became an important part of the Annapolis social scene and helped to establish AYC as a beloved community institution. During World War II, the Annapolis Yacht Club played a vital role in the war effort. Many of its members joined the Navy, and the club's facilities were used to train naval officers in navigation and seamanship. After the war, the club resumed its activities, and membership continued to grow.

AYC was founded in 1886 as an informal canoe club. Today, the Club's mission is to encourage and support a wide range of boating activities and to maintain facilities for the recreational and social use of its 2000 members.

The Annapolis Yacht Club is a full service, year-round premier private yacht club that provides high-quality programs for its members. These include sailboat racing, cruising for sailors and power boaters, a vigorous junior sailing program, fun, and educational winter activities, social events, and first-class dining and facilities.

AYC is a prominent fixture in Annapolis, is a good corporate citizen, and provides select opportunities for non-members such as its Junior Sailing program. In addition, AYC's Race Committee supports club racing, regional, national and international championships.
