A success story in phuket, thailand.

With fantastic weather Phuket is a great place to live; more so if you are into sailing with some of the best cruising grounds in the world plus a good sprinkle of regattas throughout the year.

Asia Catamarans kicked off in Phuket, Thailand in late 2012 when Australian Alan Carwardine, who was already living in Phuket, completed his employment with the UK based company Lewmar as the Asian area manager and joined forces with Swiss born Roger Diggelmann who had been running his own boat yard, Composite Yacht Constructions for 12 years in Phuket.

Alan is the designer behind Stealth designed catamarans as well as the many super fast Stealth Sports boats (monohulls) in Australia.

To kick start the new company Alan set about designing a new range of Stealth cats with more modern looks and fine tuning of the many areas that make for a good, user friendly and very livable but particularly fast cruising cat.

The new range incorporates the important original concepts of :

# Absolutely fun to sail, super responsive and more like a sports car to steer.

# Twin helms with excellent vision, traveller track and dinghy davits up on the solid and large cockpit roof giving an uncluttered cockpit with few ropes.

# Minimal sun ingress anywhere in the boat

# Maximum air flow for the tropical conditions with large vent tubes from under the trampoline into the main berths,

# Drop down and disappearing windscreens

# Internal steps that allow you to walk thru the windscreen frame, past the mast and onto the foredeck.

Stealth Cats launched to date

There are now 15 sailing cats and 5 power cat on the water.

The sailing cats range from the very fast semi race/semi cruising Stealth 11.8’s to a fully fitted out and live-board Stealth 13c charter cat with all the bells and whistles; Or the Stealth 13s, a faster more basic 13 metre version plus a fast world cruising 14 metre now 3/4 of the way around the world with well over 35,000 nm under her hulls.

In 2020 two new sail cats were launched.

A new Stealth 12.6, ‘Fez’ designed for live-aboard charter and sailing courses for Java Yachting, our 1st repeat customer and Alan June Carwardine’s 4th Stealth cat. This time a very fast 12.2 Stealth, ‘Coconuts’ that is fully fitted out for serious cruising. The boat has a set of cruising sails and a set of racing sails and came overall 2nd in her 1st regatta, the Jai Dee regatta organised by the Phuket Yacht Club.

Launched to date in the powercat range is the 44ft power cat ‘Rendezvous’ which has had a very successful charter life carrying 22 guests and 3 crew with a max speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 15.

It is hard to believe but these speeds are achieved with a pair of 60hp outboards only so fuel consumption is very low, a big winner when chartering. To achieve such fuel economy a lot of effort went into reducing windage and reducing weight. With empty tanks, Rendezvous weighs 3.6 ton.

2 new Stealth 47 ft powercats, Infinity and Maserati, the largest the company has designed and built are also out there working within the day charter industry carrying 37 guests and 3 crew with a max speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 18.

The latest 47 ft powercat ‘Sea Explorer’ has also been working hard in the charter industry. Sea Explorer is equipped with all the mod cons for high end diving charters or a live-aboard for up to 7 passengers and 2 crew for periods of up to 10 days.

All 3 Stealth 47 powercats are fitted with a pair of 140 hp outboards on a lifting mechanism thru a well in the hull.

The 1st Stealth 36e powercat, ‘Hot Chilli’ was ordered thru the brokerage Multihull Solutions for local charter company Far-away Yachting. This small powercat is packed with space and ideal for economical charter work carrying 16 guests and 2 crew. Hot Chilli can cruise at 15 knots with a full payload with a pair of 60hp outboards fitted.

Orders in Place

A new Stealth 13.2, ‘Vela’ is soon to be launched for Brisbane couple Emma and Nick Lyons. The boat has been designed and built for circumnavigation but still has all the go fast gear ready for doing the odd regatta.

After sea trails the boat will be shipped into her new home between Brisbane and The Gold Coast.

Asia Catamarans are also well into the building of a Stealth 12 to be shipped into Italy and a Stealth 13s to be based here for some local cruising before being sailed or shipped back to Europe.

The 3rd Europe boat on the order books will be started later this year for English couple Mark and Niobe based in northern Spain.

There is a full carbon Stealth 12.2 race cat also ordered by a Hobie world champion many times over. This machine will be based on the Gold Coast, Australia.

One of the most exciting Stealth’s on the order book is a fully electric, solar 40 ft powercat to be shipped into New Zealand. There is a certain amount of secrecy about this ‘new technology focused’ powercat ordered by a guru in this field so watch this space!

Very recently a new order for another Stealth 13.2 has been received for a Mackay, Australia based couple. Production is planned at the end of 2021.

Such a full order book is a true testament to the ongoing success of Asia Catamarans and their very much appealing Stealth cats.

Race results and other news

The all carbon Stealth 12, Cosmo that was shipped into Sydney  in late 2018 now has new owners, The 18ft skiff legend Trevor and wife Gail Barnabas.

Trevor and Gail intend to do as many Australian East Coast regattas as possible with as much cruising in between.

Two Stealth 13s’ have been built to date with both boats enjoying some racing success with Phantom V winning the King’s Cup and recently winning the 2019 Multihull Solutions Race Week followed by another win in the Cape Panwa Phuket Race Week. These newish designs follow on from the very successful Stealth 11.8 cats such as Hurricane and Java both achieving excellent OMR results. The 13s ( performance version)  has slightly more sail area but a metre taller rig, longer, slender hulls and carries a lower OMR than the Stealth 11.8’s??  Why they area a weapon on the race track.

The Stealth 13s, Phantom V is still based in Phuket while the owners continue to enjoy great cruising amongst their regatta sailing. Eventually the cat will be sailed to Ballina, NSW as her home base. Another stealth to watch out for in the SE QLD regattas in the future.

To date 6 King’s Cup regattas and 6 Phuket Race Week regattas have been won by a Stealth cat with many more regatta wins and podium finishes since the Stealth cats first started hitting the water 9 years ago.

The original Stealth 12 ‘Cut Snake’ is still doing well on the Australian race course winning the 2013 Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race and the Stealth 12.6 ‘Sidewinder’ now called Nautilus and based in Darwin won the Darwin to Ambon Race a few years back and has been continually cruising thru the Indonesian waters..

The Stealth designs have been dominating the Asian regattas in recent years and there seems no reason why this will not continue into the future with more Stealths and new Stealth designs on the race course.

The Stealth 13s ‘Top Cat’ and now called ‘LeVi’ has moved onto her new home in New Caledonia after being sailed to Singapore, shipped to Brisbane and sailed onto New Cal.

Galeforce has been sold, cruised most of Indo for 18 months and soon to be back in Phuket.

The Stealth 12 Motor Sailer ‘Integos’ is enjoying great cruising and lifestyle in the  med after being shipped into Turkey.

The very fast Stealth 11.8, ‘Hurricane’ is being enjoyed by her new owners in San Diego.

The Stealth 14GT ‘Wow’ is still in Covid lockdown in Tahiti after leaving the Panama canal and sailing across the Pacific. Eventually Wow will sail back to Phuket completing her circumnavigation. Many great stories abound from owners David and Helen including winning the Heineken Regatta in Antigua 2018.

Solar electric Stealths for the future

There has been a lot of focus on electrical propulsion recently which due to gains in technology is no doubt slowly becoming more viable.

Asia Cats has had many inquiries and been down the road of development in this field always to come to a brick wall mainly due to the high costs involved or the uncertainty of the unknown so it is great to now have on order the 1st truly electric 40ft powercat that will be built in conjunction with a NZ based company, experts in this field.

New ideas and designs, new techniques and new materials continue to become available to all boat designers and builders. This ideology is the way forward for any business leaving little room for complacency; a key to the success of Asia Catamarans.

The Evolution of Asia Catamarans

Asia Catamarans, Phuket’s most successful boatbuilding company, was officially launched in 2013. Today it has built 25 sail and power catamarans.

The company’s manager Alan Carwardine designed and built his first stealth catamaran in Brisbane, a Stealth 12c called, As mad as a cut snake, which he launched on 2007 while he was the Manager of Allyacht Spars (that boat is still doing well on the Australian race course winning a Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race not too long ago). Prior to this period Alan designed and built many of Australia’s fast monohull sports boats and trailer-sailers.

At that time, there wasn’t a designer out there who could design a cat Alan liked that focused on performance, ergonomics and was suited for tropical climate conditions so he designed one himself. But he soon realized that catamarans couldn’t be built profitably in Australia because of the costs associated with labour, sheds, service, and insurance – Alan always knew he had to go to Asia if he wanted to build boats for a business. Alas, many designers can’t sell their designs because they can’t get their boats built.

Alan moved to Thailand in 2009, working as the Asia-area manager for the UK deck hardware company Lewmar. During that time, he met Roger Diggelman of Composite Yacht Constructions, having helped consult on the Andaman Cabriolet catamarans Roger was building for Grenville Fordham and Bob Mott. Alan’s second Stealth cat was Sidewinder, a Stealth 12.6c, which he built in Brisbane, but cut up and shipped to Phuket in a 40-foot container where Roger assembled it at his yard in Phuket. It was launched in 2010 just prior to Phuket Raceweek, and sold to John and Libby Punch in 2012. They renamed it Nautilus and is now based in Darwin. It won the Darwin to Ambon Race a few years back and has been continually cruising thru Indonesian waters since bought.

Alan thought that joining forces with Roger would tick all the boxes for a future boat building and design business. Roger had a small company with eight employees that Alan believed needed funding to expand the business, to build a new shed, and purchase some new tools, consequently the idea of Asia Catamarans was born. Most boat designers would kill to have the situation Alan has now, whereby he has his own facility to build his own designed boats but Alan is also much more multi-faceted than most designers given his boat-building and managerial background.

Realizing that an alliance with Roger would work, he informed Lewmar at the start of 2013 that he would be following his dream of being a full-time designer and builder of catamarans. With Roger and Alan as 50/50 partners Asia Catamarans was formed and immediately started production.

Alan then started with a brand-new page of Autocad and re-designed the Stealth hull and deck for a better look and better performance. The earlier two Stealths were a little “nose-divey” and pitchy. A new hull and deck mold was made and modern building techniques adapted. The first boat under this new design was Hurricane, a Stealth 11.8s, built for Alan and his wife June, launched in January, 2012.

Alan knew he couldn’t compete with European production boats and Australian designers were not adapting to the Queensland tropical conditions so the focus on the new design was all about light weight performance cruising/racing and being very livable in the tropics, a niche market for sure but none the less, an unfulfilled market.

“We made a big effort with Hurricane to win as many regattas as possible,”: Alan says. “That caused a lot of interest in Australia and elsewhere with people following performance catamaran designs. 5 Kings Cup wins and 6 Phuket Race Week wins resulted in great marketing. The ability for the Stealth’s to sail at ‘faster than wind speed’ while cruising in the dominantly lighter airs of the tropics and the excellent air flow of the design had great appeal for cruising people. The design was aimed at people that weren’t necessarily racers but liked performance cats and the enjoyment of sailing a nicely balance and responsive catamaran. (Hurricane was sold in 2017 and is now based in San Diego)

The second boat out of the new mold and the fourth Stealth was Afterburner, a Stealth 12.6s. It was launched in January 2013 for Daniel Reno and then sold to Guy Scott from Singapore in 2016. It was later sold again to Bob Engel and is now based in Phuket and re-named Lady Luck.

The fifth Stealth was Java, a Stealth 11.8s, a sistership to Hurricane. Launched in June 2013 for John Coffin and Java Yachting.

John then proposed that Alan design and Asia Catamarans build a Stealth power cat, feeling that you didn’t need a mast and sails for Asian charter work so Rendezvous, was launched in Sept 2014.

Roger, Alan and friend Marc Chapus then started Asia Catamarans Sailing, a charter company, which would lease the power cats the company built. The 43ft 3.6-ton Rendezvous, was the seventh Stealth and could carry 22 guests and 3 crew with a maximum speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 15. After great charter success it was sold to a Russian charter company based in Phuket in 2017.

The sixth build was a Stealth 13c, Gale Force for Gokova Yacht Charters. It was launched in Dec 2013 and after years of solid charter work was sold in 2018. It is now based in San Francisco.

The eighth Stealth was the 14GT Wow, the first liveaboard, for David Liddell, which is currently doing a circumnavigation of the globe. It was stuck in Tahiti during the height of COVID, but previous to that won the Heineken Regatta in Antigua 2018.

Next up was Allegro a Stealth 13c liveaboard which was launched in September of 2015. The owner Bob McInytre lives on the boat at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club Marina.

The next boat completed, the largest to date was a Stealth 47ft day charter powercat called Infinity, which was put into the Asia Catamarans Sailing fleet, managed by Marc Chapus, whose idea it was to build the 47ft power cats. They were fast, light, and had low fuel consumption and low maintenance.

From the end of 2014 Asia Catamarans would only build to customer requests, with their order book filling up quickly 8 months ahead. Next up, were the sisterships Top Cat and Phantom V, two Stealth 13s. Top Cat was launched in March 2016 for Peter Wood. It was later sold to Mike Hoskins, re-named LeVi, and is now based in New Caledonia. Phantom V was launched in Nov 2016 for Andrew and Gaela Hurford. After years of good regatta results, it was sold to John Spencer in 2021 and re-named Zero.

Then came Twister 2 a Stealth 12s, launched in May 2017 for Glywn and Karen Rowlands. The boat is a regular on the local regatta scene. Integos, a Stealth 12, their first motor-sailer, a very interesting design with a carbon mast you could drop/raise in three minutes to navigate canals in the Mediterranean. It was built for Austrian Franz Rathkolb who took possession of the boat in Turkey and has now cruised thru much of the Mediterranean, including the canals of Venice.

Next to be launched was Maserati, Infinity’s sister ship. These two were the largest boats the company had designed and built and could carry 37 guests and 3 crew with a max speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 18. After servicing Asia Catamarans Sailing, both were eventually sold to a Singapore charter company.

The company then received its first order for a full-on carbon Stealth from Peter Wilcox. The 12m Cosmo (most Stealths up to that time were 20 percent carbon), was fitted with removeable foils on its rudders and daggerboards. It was shipped to Sydney in late 2018 and now has new owners, the 18ft skiff legend Trevor and wife Gail Barnabas.

The seventeenth build was Sea Explorer, another Stealth 47 powercat. Launched for Torben Busk Jensen’s charter company in Phuket, it is equipped with all the mod-cons for high-end diving charters or a live-aboard for up to seven passengers and two crew for periods of up to 10 days.

For its eighteenth boat, Asia Catamarans proceeded to build their smallest power cat Hot Chilli a Stealth 36e, which was ordered thru the brokerage Multihull Solutions for local charter company Far-away Yachting. This small powercat, launched in November of 2019 is packed with space and ideal for economical charter work carrying 16 guests and 2 crew. Hot Chilli can cruise at 15 knots with a full payload with a pair of 60hp outboards fitted.

Asia Catamarans then received a new order (boat #19) for a 12.6c Stealth called Fez from John Coffin, making him the first repeat customer. Launched in September of 2020, it was designed for live-aboard charter use and teaching sailing courses for Java Yachting. By this time, Dan Fidock had bought Java and renamed it Saffron.

Coconuts, a very fast 12.2 Stealth, came next and was originally built for the Carwardine’s to sail through Indonesia, but this idea failed due to COVID. Fully fitted out for serious cruising, the boat has a set of cruising and racing sails. Though the Carwardine’s couldn’t fulfil their cruising dreams, the upside of the pandemic was it increased their orders dramatically. The company only shut down for ten days in early 202I for COVID. Coconuts was launched in September 2020 but to make way for a radical new design whizzing around in Alan’s head it was sold in 2021 to Bob Engwirda and shipped into Brisbane.

Build 21 was Vela, a Stealth 13.2, which was built for a Brisbane couple Emma and Nick Lyons, and launched in 2021. The boat has been designed and built for circumnavigation but still has all the gear ready for doing the odd regatta.

Number 22 was Luna, a Stealth 12c. Launched in Jan 2022 for Roberto Prever, it was shipped into Italy and now based in Trieste. It was the 1st CE approved Stealth.

Payu, a Stealth 13s and the 2nd CE approved Stealth, was next launched in January 2022 for Joachim and Christina Fietz.

Number 24 was Earthling, a Stealth/Earthling 12, full electric powercat, launched in April 2022 for the Earthling company and shipped into Auckland. This state-of-the-art boat has really been turning heads with a top speed of 20 knots and a “battery only” range of 150 nm.

Stealth number 25, Arriba is the latest, brand new and very radical design called the Stealth X Series 43, which was launched in August 2022 for Alan and June. “The X Series 43 is a totally different design and my attempt to design the perfect cruising boat for a couple in the tropics, not too powerful, has an inside helm for motoring (will motor at 18knots) and outside tillers when sailing. It looks like a trimaran without the middle hull in the water,” says Alan.

It’s really quite remarkable to think the majority of these builds were completed in less than a decade in a shed in Ao Chalong, not too far away from the Phuket Yacht Club.

To what does Alan contribute the company success to?

“We didn’t want veteran boat builders with closed minds. We needed young builders who weren’t set in their ways. So, we asked our staff, who were all from Isaan, if they had any young relatives in northeast Thailand who would like to apprentice with the company. We trained our staff up, as the processes we use are very high-tech for Phuket. “Traditionally, in the workplace in Thailand, it’s been very difficult for a younger person to tell an older person what to do because of the dreaded loss of face,” Alan says. “But now, our three team leaders can tell the older guys what to do, in a respectful manner, of course. I think it works because they are all friends, they know each other and they know each other’s families.”

Today Asia Catamarans has 25 staff, including folks from five extended families, so to say the company is close knit would be an understatement.

To date Stealth cats have won six Phuket King’s Cup regattas and seven Phuket Raceweeks. Indeed, the Stealth designs have been dominating the Asian regattas in recent years and there seems no reason why this will not continue into the future with more new Stealth designs to hit the water soon.

He is based out of Palma, Spain, and now working as first officer on the 88-metre sailing ketch Aquijo. Alan’s daughter Mia is the Operations Manager of the Australian Marine Conservation Society, having previously served with Conservation International in East Timor.)

With the two factory ammo choices you mentioned, you should be well under MOA and depending on your skill set, the Stealths are 1/2MOA capable. As for the scope...you can cross-mount scopes with the Larue setup without concern. I generally don't do it because I am paranoid and don't want to "chance it" with any flex/ht differences/etc. between the receiver rail and HG rail...but it won't hurt anything. Congrats and good luck...be sure to post a range report after you put it through its paces this weekend.

The load mine live on is 25 grs of Varget in LC brass with 77gr SMK's seated to mag length. Shoot great out to 800. Occasionally, I get lucky and get a .25 - .35 MOA 5 Shot group at 100.

They are clear, repeatable and built like tanks. On the flip side some feel they are too heavy, I just say they are built to be used. I recently had tried to sell a 6-24x50 XTR here on the Hide (couldn't give it away) as the adjustments were too coarse for most, 1" elevation and 1/2" windage. I called Burris repair/customer service out of Colorado and spoke to a guy named "Martin". He explained they could change the knobs to 1/4" adjustments for $40.00, needless to say I am keeping the scope and it should be back in my hands tomorrow, a hair over 2 weeks after I sent it. Great scopes and service.

Re: Larue Stealth 18" arrived yesterday I ignore the Viking. I ordered 1/2 pound of Tungston powder last night and I'm going to start experimenting with adding weight to a rifle buffer and see if I can work out a more consistant fresh round loading.

Sometimes a first round "hand chambered" round out of a gas gun produces a flier and a different POI from POA. So I said doccument how much of a change in POI from PoA there is on that hand chambered round and see if it is repeatable. IF its repeatable then you will know how much to adjust on that hand chambered round when it is needed.

Tested: 2022 Ford Expedition Stealth Performance Brings Sneaky Speed

Some serious upgrades enable Ford's big SUV to hurl itself to 60 mph in less than five seconds.

To get your hands on this fleetest of Expeditions, you'll need to order a Limited (either rear- or four-wheel drive, regular wheelbase or Max) and add equipment group 304A, a.k.a. the Stealth Performance package, for an additional $9880. That brings an extra 40 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque. Be not tempted by equipment group 303A, which costs $4670 and is merely Stealth without the Performance. What's the point in being stealthy if there's nothing to hide?

Besides its high-output V-6 (440 horsepower, 510 lb-ft of torque) and dual exhaust, the Stealth Performance pack brings a sport-tuned suspension, a 3.73:1 final-drive ratio, black-painted six-spoke 22-inch wheels, and those decidedly unstealthy red brake calipers. It also gets a lot of blacked-out trim (grille, roof rails, power-deployable running boards, headlight bezels), and panoramic glass roof, and a 22-speaker B&O sound system. Oddly for a model positioned as the performance zenith of the lineup, there are a few key pieces of hardware that remain optional. We say you might as well go all the way and add the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential ($1500 and available only on four-by-fours) and adaptive dampers for an extra $995.

Despite the promise of a "sport-tuned suspension," the Stealth Performance remains a comfy pleasure palace and drives as such. While the potent twin-turbo V-6 can disguise our Expedition's 5837 pounds, you feel that weight in the corners, where the big Ford can manage only 0.75 g of lateral grip. A Porsche Macan this is not, but that number at least betters the 0.69 g we recorded from the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V , which has much more overt sporting pretensions. The Stealth Performance's mien is akin to that of a big old Bentley, something like a Mulsanne that could light the afterburners for an on-ramp but wanted to heel over onto the door handles when the off-ramp arrived. And the Expedition is similarly hushed going down the road, with an interior sound level of 68 decibels at 70 mph and just 74 decibels at wide-open throttle. This hot rod might have a dual exhaust, but not the kind that annoys the neighbors.

LOWS: Almost $10K upcharge over the Limited trim, still handles like an Expedition, poseurs can get the same look.

FoMoCo aficionados may have noted that the Stealth Performance seems to have borrowed the Lincoln Navigator's engine, and they're right—this is the same powertrain that hustled our most recent test Navigator to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. And at $78,730 for a standard-wheelbase rear-wheel-drive model and $81,780 for a four-by-four, the Expedition Limited Stealth Performance can overlap the Navigator in price too. Fortunately, Stealth Performance buyers can't really go much higher because the Limited is already decked out with most of the Expedition's available options: a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats. And yeah, the Expedition's black leather seats with red stitching look sharp, but have you seen the Navigator's interior?

Then again, we suppose the Expedition Stealth Performance courts a different sort of audience. The Navigator is all bombast, chrome, and flash. Meanwhile, the Stealth Performance doesn't even wear any badges that identify it as such. But if you see an Expedition Limited with red brake calipers easing up to a stoplight like it's the Christmas tree at the local quarter-mile strip, maybe think twice before getting into an impromptu drag race. While other Expeditions might also seat eight passengers and tow 9300 pounds, only this one can give EcoBoost Mustangs a run for their money.

This body will transform your Traxxas Slash 2wd into a scale 1/4-mile beast with a ton of realistic details to give your SC drag car a super unique, race-inspired look.

The C7 Pro-Mod is a convenient 1-piece body design with no assembly necessary: just paint it up in your favorite colors and start burning rubber! We recommend using Pro-Line’s Hoosier 2.2" Drag Racing Front Tires on the front and Hoosier Drag Slick SC 2.2"/3.0" Drag Racing Tires in the rear combined with a set of our Pomona Drag Spec Wheels for the ultimate scale hot-rod stance.

To create a more scale look, the body is designed with a narrower track width than a traditional SC body and will require some modifications to your 2wd Slash in order to fit correctly.

Driven: The 2023 Ford Expedition Stealth Edition Is A Three-Row Muscle Car

This is a family hauler with attitude.

People who buy full-size SUVs like the 2023 Ford Expedition typically do so for passenger space, towing capability, cargo capacity, or some combination of the three. But with Ford's recent facelift for the 2022 model year, it added two new Expedition trim levels called the Timberline and Stealth Edition . The former is an off-road variant that goes after the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, while the latter is a sportier variant that faces off against the Chevrolet Tahoe RST Performance Edition .

The Stealth Performance Package is only available on the Limited trim for a whopping $9,880 ($80,480 total with destination). Is it worth that massive investment? We spent a week driving the Expedition Stealth Edition to determine if a three-row body-on-frame SUV could ever be considered "sporty."

Stealthy Styling

As part of the Stealth Package, the Expedition sacrifices all of its shiny bits for darker, more menacing accents. These include black mirrors, badging, grille accents, and 22-inch wheels with red brake calipers for a pop of color. The wheels are particularly cool, with a sort-of Mustang look. Even the famous Ford Blue Oval is finished in black, tying the whole package together. The Infinite Blue Metallic Tinted Clearcoat paint on our tester stands out nicely with the meaner Stealth look, but for the full murdered-out effect, we'd opt for Agate Black Metallic.

Muscle Car Power

Along with the darker accents, Ford significantly increased the power under the hood. The Timberline and Stealth Edition share the honor of being the most powerful Expeditions money can buy. The 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 includes the same tune as the Lincoln Navigator, delivering 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. That's more than GM's 6.2-liter V8 and the Wagoneer's twin-turbo inline-six.

Ford says the Expedition Stealth can hit 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, but independent testing has measured it below five seconds. That's astonishing for something this big. It's so quick off the line that, on a few occasions, the glovebox popped open - perhaps indicative of a few niggling quality issues on our tester rather than its impressive performance.

Though the straight-line speed is impressive, we weren't blown away by the handling. This is still a massive vehicle, and no amount of adaptive sport-tuned suspension (a $995 option) can change that. The ride is perfectly comfortable, but the kids in the back would get sick if you decided to unleash the Expedition's power on a curvy road. For a more comprehensive family thrill ride, we still prefer the Dodge Durango SRT.

Roomy Interior

The Expedition packs room for seven occupants, though second- and third-row space are not best-in-class. This is also true for cargo space, where the Expedition provides less storage space than the Chevy Tahoe and Jeep Wagoneer. There is the Expedition Max if you need more space, particularly behind the third row, but the Chevy Suburban and Jeep Wagoneer L still boast more cargo volume. This is still a very spacious vehicle, but there are more practical haulers in the segment.

This is all relative, as any family migrating to an Expedition from a midsize SUV will feel a definite increase in size.

Is It Worth Navigator Money?

If you're looking for a full-size SUV with a sporty edge, this seems like the best option. It's more powerful than the Tahoe RST Edition, but it does not offer a throaty V8. Inside, the Stealth is well-equipped with heated/ventilated front seats, second-row captain's chairs, power-folding third row, a 15.5-inch infotainment system, a 22-speaker B&O sound system, digital gauge cluster, panoramic roof, and more. But you know what else has all that stuff plus a luxury nameplate? The Lincoln Navigator.

With options, our Expedition Stealth Edition tester came in at over $83,000. A base Navigator starts at $79,725. That base price only includes two-wheel drive, 14 speakers, 20-inch wheels, and a 13.2-inch touchscreen, but it delivers a more premium cabin, heated/ventilated second-row seats, and a better dealership experience. The Stealth Edition is cool for moms and dads who want some Mustang flavor in their three-row family hauler, but buyers who want more elegance will be happier with a Navigator.
