Activities with Cabin Cruisers

GREAT FOR Day Cruising  • Overnight Cruising

The best cabin cruiser boats generally come fully-equipped for spending extended periods of time aboard, including sleeping, cooking, and bathroom accommodations—though on a boat, you always call the bathroom the “ head .” A large cabin cruiser will have enough space for private bedrooms (we call these “staterooms” in nautical parlance), and often can sleep up to a dozen people.

What if you down-size a bit? Let’s say you’ve found what you consider to be the best cabin cruiser under 40 feet. Models of this size are likely to have at least one private stateroom plus additional beds and berths for a guest couple or a boatload of kids. Go even smaller, maybe to a cabin cruiser under 30 feet, and there may be less elbow room. But even small cabin cruisers will likely have sleeping room for four to six people.

Having the ability to sleep aboard and cook in the galley (our nautical name for the kitchen) means that you have even more extensive travelling abilities than if you drove a car and stayed in a hotel room. Virtually all ports you might want to visit have slips for rent by the night or weekend, waterfront restaurants you can tie up at, and numerous attractions within easy walking- or ride-sharing distance.

One of the great things about a cabin cruiser is that along with that cabin, you get all the other perks and pleasures of owning any sort of boat. All of the best cabin cruiser boats have large swim platforms and ladders that make going for a dip and then re-boarding a piece of cake, large loungers and sunpads for relaxing, and decks where the kids can cast a fishing line. Day cruising can be just as much fun as staying on the boat overnight, and truth be told, there’s little limitation on the activities you have to choose from with a cabin cruiser underfoot.

Ownership Costs of Cabin Cruisers

The initial cost of a cabin cruiser can vary wildly, depending mostly on the size you choose. Sure, there are million-dollar cabin cruiser boats out there, but there are also plenty of small cabin cruisers that cost a lot less than you might think. In fact, many cost less than some motorhomes or RVs with comparable accommodations. To see what fits within your budget, be sure to utilize our Boat Loan Calculator .

Maintenance costs are certainly a factor every potential boat owner needs to consider in advance. Be sure to check out the Maintenance pages in our Owning a Boat section , which will give you an idea of what’s involved. Also remember that boats with multiple engines will have multiple maintenance costs.

Operation costs for a cabin cruiser can vary dramatically, since they depend to a great degree on just how you use the boat. Fortunately, there’s not much in the way of variables to worry about other than fuel. When considering your budget, however, you should also include the cost of mooring the boat. And in many areas of the nation storing your cabin cruiser in the off-season needs to be taken into account as well.

Cabin Cruiser Technology/Materials/Features

Like most aspects of life, modern technology has had a big impact on cabin cruiser boats. One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the adoption of outboard engines. Historically most cabin cruisers have had inboards or stern drives. But outboard engines have become much more reliable and fuel efficient, and today when you identify the best cabin cruiser under 30 feet for you and your family, you’re likely to discover that it’s an outboard boat. The larger the cabin cruisers you look at, the more likely it becomes that you’ll see inboards and also pod drives. See the Boat Motors section of our Buying a Boat guide , to learn more about these different power systems.

Another big leap forward that’s taken place regarding cabin cruiser technology in recent years is the digitization of a boat’s control systems. This has made interfacing with your boat much simpler and easier than it used to be, since many aspects of running your boat are more or less like using an app. When you want to turn on the anchor lights, for example, instead of looking around to find the right switch and toggling it, you can swipe to the lighting icon on the touch-screen at the helm—or sometimes right on your phone.

Types of Boats With Cabins: Your Guidebook

17th jul 2023 by toi williams.

Rightboat logo

Boaters who enjoy comfort often choose boats with cabins. Having a cabin on the boat provides protection from the sun, wind, and rain while on the water and gives the boaters, or their guests, a place to rest when they want to relax. Boats with cabins come in many different varieties from large cabin cruisers to smaller boats with pilothouse-type cabins. Finding the right types of boats with cabins for you and your family or friends requires knowing the differences between the various boat styles.

cabin cruiser

Types of Cabin Cruiser Boats

Cabin cruiser boats are some of the most well-appointed types of cabin boats . They are designed for spending extended periods on the water and generally come with a sleeping area, a galley, and a small bathroom. These types of boats come in lengths ranging from 25 feet to 100 feet. Boaters tend to like them because they have plenty of room, can be used in both freshwater and saltwater, and they often have large swim platforms and sun pads for relaxing.

Cabin cruiser boats for sale

The most common types of cabin cruiser boats are express cruisers and pocket cruisers.

Express cruisers

Express cruisers, also called expresses, coupes, and sport cruisers, are designed for high performance with a low-slung hardtop and a V-shaped hull. They often have top speeds of more than 30 knots and cruise efficiently at speeds from 22 to 25 knots. The top makers of express cruiser boats include Boston Whaler , Formula , Monterey Boats , Princess , Pursuit  ans  Regal .

Express cruiser boats for sale

Pocket cruisers

Pocket cruisers are smaller than express cruisers and try to fit a lot of boat into a small package with creative engineering and a smart use of available space, making them ideal for couples and smaller families. These cabin cruisers generally have a living area situated above deck with a cabin below deck to maximize space and comfort. They are generally chosen as recreational boats for weekend leisure trips. The top makers of pocket cruiser boats include Cutwater , Jeanneau  and  Ranger Tugs . Some unusual new designs, including those from  Sea Ray  and Solara , have a cabin in the middle and a bow cockpit forward.

Types of Cuddy Cabin Boats

Cuddy cabin boats are boats with a small, enclosed cabin space that may or may not be large enough to stand up in. Depending on the model, they may also have a head and possibly even a small galley. These boats with cabins tend to range in length from 20 feet to 26 feet, and place more emphasis on open cockpit space but still have the cuddy cabin for overnight trips or breaks from the weather. Boaters can enjoy just about any activity that they would undertake with a larger boat, including fishing, cruising, and towing skiers, boarders, and tubers. However, they have limited sleeping and storage space as they are not intended for long voyages. Some makers of various types of cuddy cabin boats include  Boston Whaler , Grady-White , Jeanneau , and Sea Ray .

Types of Offshore Cabin Boats

There are many types of offshore cabin boats in a wide range of styles and sizes. Some, which would usually be categorized as trawlers, have larger displacement hulls offering the maximum amount of tankage and onboard storage space. A handful of offshore cabin boats also offer electric or hybrid motors to maximize fuel efficiency.

Trawlers are designed for extended stays during long voyages. They tend to have relatively large cabins, can have displacement or semi-displacement hulls, and come with either one or two engines. Most will have at least one private stateroom, a full galley, and an enclosed head. Most trawlers range from 30 feet to 80 feet in length, although there are a few that fall outside this range. Top trawler brands today include Beneteau , Grand Banks , Nordhavn , Nordic Tugs , and Ranger Tugs .

Flybridge cabin cruisers

These boats are cruisers that have a steering station on top of the hard top, and in some cases on very large models, an upper cabin as well. They are a popular choice among boaters for their elevated perspective during cruising, along with their versatility and spaciousness. Flybridge cabin cruisers come in a number of shapes and sizes, starting at around 35 feet and going up from there. Top manufacturers of flybridge cabin cruisers include Beneteau , Cranchi , Fairline , Galeon , Lagoon , Prestige , and (on the used boat market) Sealine .

Downeast cabin cruisers

Downeast cabin cruisers are exceptionally well-suited for overnight trips and day cruising. They tend to have a helm station in the main cabin, with accommodations in a lower cabin positioned toward the forward part of the hull. These cabin boats can typically accommodate 10 or more passengers and range in size from about 20 feet to nearly 70 feet in length. Leading boat manufacturers specializing in downeast cabin cruisers include Back Cove , Ellis , Hinckley , and True North .

Catamarans are also offered as offshore cabin boats, especially in the sailing category. These are usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and have two reinforced hulls. Top builders include Fountaine-Pajot , Catana , Leopard , Nautitech , and Seawind . There are also some power catamaran cruising boats, which are generally appreciated for their high stability and spacious decks. Top builders include Aquila, Leopard, Nautitech, and Lagoon .

Trimarans , aalso known as double outriggers, are sailboats similar to catamarans except they have three hulls: a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls connected to the main hull with lateral beams. Their design makes them exceptionally fast, so they are preferable for many recreational and racing purposes. They are often chosen for long trips with family and friends or for thrilling rides at high speeds. There are many manufacturers of trimarans, including Astus , Dragonfly , Farrier , Neel , and Radikal .

Types of Cabin Boats on Lakes

You can find just about any type of cabin boat on a lake, though most you’ll see are smaller and less powerful than the types of boats used offshore since they’re land-locked and are generally used for covering shorter distances. Lakes are also where you’ll find many houseboats, which certainly fall into the cabin boat category, and lots of people use them for vacationing or in lieu of a lakefront home. On some large lakes where fishing is popular, there may also be a contingent of fishing boats with cabins.

Safety Considerations for Cabin Motorboats

motorboat with cabin

When it comes to operating a cabin motorboat, it’s important to remember that these vessels are designed for recreational use and should not be used for any type of commercial activity.

Furthermore, there are several safety considerations to keep in mind while operating these vessels.

First, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the vessel, its controls, and any safety equipment on board.

A good practice is to inspect the cabin and all safety equipment before each voyage.

Make sure that the boat is equipped with life jackets, a fire extinguisher, flares, and other safety gear.

It’s also important to make sure that the boat is properly registered and insured.

It’s also important to observe all local and federal laws while operating the boat.

Be sure to check the local weather and tidal conditions before heading out on the water.

Additionally, be aware of the rules and regulations for motorboat operation in the area, as well as any posted speed limits.

It’s also important to be aware of the potential dangers of operating a cabin motorboat.

These vessels are not designed for extended offshore journeys, and can be vulnerable to rough seas and storms.

Be sure to have a plan in place for dealing with any potential emergencies, such as a breakdown or an injury.

Finally, make sure that the vessel is properly maintained.

Check the fuel, oil, and other fluids regularly, and make sure that the engine is in good working order.

Be sure to inspect the hull and deck for any signs of wear or damage, and replace any worn or damaged parts as needed.

By keeping these safety considerations in mind, you can ensure that your time spent on a cabin motorboat is both enjoyable and safe.

Cabin motorboats come in a variety of sizes and configurations, so its important to find one that meets all of your needs. Here are some features to look for when buying a cabin motorboat:

Maintenance: Finally, its important to consider the maintenance needs of your cabin motorboat. Look for a boat with a reliable engine and hull, as well as one that doesnt require too much upkeep. Additionally, make sure you have access to a reputable marina or service center that can handle any repairs or maintenance your boat might need.

Finding the right cabin motorboat can be a daunting task, but taking the time to consider all of the features and options available can help you find the perfect boat for your needs.

By keeping these features in mind, you can ensure you find a boat that is comfortable, reliable, and safe.

Maintenance Requirements for Cabin Motorboats

motorboat with cabin

When it comes to maintenance of a cabin motorboat, there are a few key elements to keep in mind.

First, the boat should be inspected regularly for any signs of wear or damage.

This includes checking the hull and deck for cracks or dents, and inspecting the engine and other mechanical components for proper functioning.

It is also important to check that the boat has adequate fuel, oil, and coolant.

Regular cleaning and waxing of the hull and deck is essential for keeping your boat in top condition.

Additionally, all hardware, such as cleats, railings, and other fixtures, should be inspected for corrosion and wear.

It is also important to check the condition of the propeller and other steering components, and to make sure that the boat’s steering and navigational systems are functioning properly.

Finally, routine maintenance of the boat’s electrical systems should be performed to ensure that the boat is safe and reliable.

Overall, maintaining a cabin motorboat is similar to maintaining any other powerboat.

Regular inspections, cleaning, and maintenance will keep it running smoothly and ensure that it is seaworthy.

Cuddy Cabins

Cuddy cabins are great boats for people on a budget who are looking for a boat that offers an enclosed sleeping space.  These little boats provide their owners with an interior cabin at the front of the boat that can be set up to sit in or to sleep in.

However, they typically do not offer any other amenities such as galleys or heads.

This makes them great for day trips, weekend adventures, and boat camping excursions, but not very good for full-time living.

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy

motorboat with cabin

The Bayliner VR5 Cuddy is a 20’4” boat with a hull length of 18’4” a beam of 8’, and a draft of 2’10”.  A 150HP or 250HP engine can be attached to it, and a 33-gallon fuel tank is built to fuel these engines.

While this boat isn’t very large, it can still hold up to 8 people.

Of course, these eight people would not be able to move around freely in a boat of this size, but they would have plenty of seating options as this boat offers them in abundance.

One of the best features of this boat is its weight.  With the 150HP engine, the boat only weighs 3,131 pounds , and even with the 250HP engine, it only weighs 3,351 pounds.  This means the boat is easily towable for people with small trucks, SUVs, and even some minivans with towing packages.

The main area of this boat has comfortable wrap-around seating, and the captain’s chair swivels around to lineup with an optional teak dining table.  This makes this little cuddy cabin perfect for cruising around on lakes, rivers, the bay, and even through small channels.

2020 models of this boat sell for around $71,000.00. However, this model isn’t completely new to Bayliner, so if you want to reduce your expenses, you could get an older used VR5 for a bit cheaper.

Stingray 208CR Cuddy Cabin

motorboat with cabin

The Stingray 208CR is another 20’ long boat with an 8’ beam.  This boat is a fiberglass boat, and it sports a V6 4.3-C 200 SX engine.  A 34-gallon fuel tank is used to fuel this boat.

Nine people can ride on the 208CR, and two people can sleep inside it.  It even has a freshwater tank of 6 gallons and a 25qt icebox.  With the 200HP engine, the dry weight of the boat is only 3,078 pounds, so it is definitely able to go on a trailer.

Up on deck, you’ll find two captain’s chairs and a bench that could realistically seat three adults.  This area is covered by a small bimini top and a front windshield.

At the stern of the boat, there is a nice little area for launching tubers, water boarders, water skiers, and even swimmers.  To get back onto the boat, one just needs to climb up the extendable ladder.

Move to the front of the boat, and you’ll find a small cabin that offers seating and a little place to sleep.  This area can also house a small portable toilet, but personally, I wouldn’t want to use a toilet in the same area that I intend to sit in and sleep in, so it’s best left for emergencies.

I couldn’t imagine being on this boat with eight other people, but it is perfect for a group of four or five people who want to have a nice day out on the water.  Passengers can rotate between doing water sports and resting in the cabin, and a couple could even spend the night out on the water from time-to-time.

This boat is very reasonably priced at $39,180.00 for a brand new 2020 model.

This cabin cannot be closed so you might want some special boat lights to keep mosquitos away .

Atlas Boat Works Pompano 23

motorboat with cabin

The Pompano 23 is 23’ long and has a 7’ beam.  The dry weight on it is only 2,100 pounds, so it is easy to tow.  It has a small fuel capacity of only 30 gallons, but this should be plenty considering how light the boat is.  Also, the engine capacity is only 115HP max, so the engine won’t be eating up a lot of full either.

One of the nice features of this boat is that the cockpit can be enclosed with a canvas enclosure.  This gives the boat an additional indoor area on top of the small cuddy cabin.  You could use this to get changed in or simply to get out of the wind and sun.  Also, the stern of the boat is completely covered with a bimini top, so you never actually have to expose yourself to the hot midday sun.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a small vee berth and a portable toilet .  The berth can be converted to a small sitting area, but most people probably won’t use it as it is quite small.

Campion Allante 635

motorboat with cabin

The 2019 Campion Allante 635 is a 22’ long fiberglass boat with a 200hp outboard gas engine.  This engine is fueled by a 60-gallon fuel tank, which is massive for a boat this size.  The larger fuel tank would be perfect for owners who want to spend a few nights out on the water in their little cuddy cabin.

Up on deck, there are two captain’s chairs and a small sitting area for four to five people behind them.  This sitting area has a round table attached to it with two built-in cup holders.  Move through this area, and there is a nice opening that can be used to access the rear of the boat.

Head inside the cabin, and once again, you’ll find a small sitting area that can be converted into a two-person sleeping area.  There is also a portable toilet that fits in between the sitting area.

The only dry weight listing I could find for the boat was 2,800 pounds , but it doesn’t list whether or not this weight includes the weight of the motor.

However, even if you add a couple of hundred pounds for the engine, you’ll still have a boat that is light enough and small enough to be towed easily.

Pricing for this boat is in the neighborhood of $50,000.00.

Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers provide a lot more usable interior space.  They make wonderful weekend getaway boats and can even be used for extended vacations.  Some people even use these boats as full-time homes , but they are a bit limited in space for this purpose.

A cabin cruiser will feature at least one berth and will usually offer a head and a galley.  It may even offer multiple berths and even a lounge area.  You can often find these with air conditioners and heaters, and a generator can even be added to power these amenities when the boat isn’t running.

People who want a yacht but can’t quite afford one just yet often turn to cabin cruisers as they offer many of the benefits of a yacht but in a smaller package.

Boston Whaler Conquest 285

motorboat with cabin

The Boston Whaler Conquest 285 is a smaller cabin cruiser.

Its length is 27’10,” and its beam is 9’6”  The dry weight without the engine is 7,300 pounds.  This is light enough that the boat could be trailered with a larger truck, but the width would make it difficult to tow around realistically.

With the high weight of the boat comes a large engine.  The engine on this is a 500HP engine.  This engine is fueled with a 200-gallon fuel tank.

The outside features a few captain’s chairs and a nice standing area that could be used for fishing.  This area also features a fridge and a small sink as well. At the bow, there is a small door so that the rear can be accessed for water sports.

The cockpit is completely enclosed, and there is seating for three.  Head through the cockpit, and you can enter the main salon, which features a berth that converts to a dining table, a small head, and a small kitchen.  There is also a cabin inside as well, which has a berth that can convert to a small seating area.

A thirty-gallon freshwater tank supplies the bathroom and kitchen with clean water, and a 6.5-gallon wastewater tank provides black water storage.  There is also a 26 gallon live well as well.

This boat sells new for several hundred thousand dollars, but you can buy them used for less than $50,000.00.

Grady White Express 330

motorboat with cabin

The Grady White Express 330 is a 33’6” boat with an 11’7” beam.  It weighs 10,840 pounds without the engines.  The engine capacity is 850 HP, which comes in the form of two rear outboard motors.  To fuel these motors, there is a 331-gallon fuel tank.

The exterior of the boat is set up for cruising and for fishing, and the deck can be converted to be used for either purpose as there are foldaway benches built into it.  There is also a side door with a boarding ladder that could be used for swimmers and divers.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a forward vee berth, a double aft berth, a seating area with a 28” television, a port side galley, and a head with a 10-gallon holding tank.  With all of these items inside the cabin, there really isn’t a lot of room to move around.  This being said, you do have everything you could need for a long weekend or even a minimalistic full-time life out on the water.

A new Grady White Express 330 is going to cost over a quarter of a million dollars.

However, you can buy used models for less than six figures.  Also, remember that a fiberglass boat can easily last a lifetime, so an investment in a 20-year-old Express 330 could be a great alternative to buying a summer vacation home.

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

motorboat with cabin

The Rinker 270 Express Cruiser is a 28’10” boat with an 8’6” beam.  It has a dry weight of 7,095 pounds and can sleep up to four people.

One of the best features of this boat is that it is small enough to be put on a trailer and large enough to live in.  This makes it very desirable for weekend adventurers and for people who wish to travel around the country with their boat in tow.

On top of this, the boat’s cabin offers 6’5” of headroom, which is more than many campers have to offer these days.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a vee berth as well as a double berth on either side of a galley kitchen and a small head.   This kitchen contains a one burner electric stove, a microwave, and a 2.3 cubic foot fridge.  For entertainment, there is a built-in Bluetooth stereo system.

On the outside, the cockpit features seating for three, and it is all covered with a bimini top.  Behind this, there is a section that contains dual benches that face each other.  Just past this is a back deck that would be easy to jump on and off of.  It also houses an extendable ladder that can be used by swimmers.

What I love about this boat is that you can find used models for as little as $20,000.00 and even brand new, you won’t have to sell your house to buy one.

Center Console Fishing Boats

Many boat manufacturers have caught onto the fact that it’s easier for anglers to sell their families on the idea of buying a fishing boat that’s also comfortable for passengers.  For this reason, they’re now building center console fishing boats with cabins and seating areas that rival cruising boats.

These boats are great for anglers because they have a full 360-degree area that they can fish from.  On top of this, they can bring their non-fishing family members with them, and they can hang out in the lounge areas or get some rest inside the cabin.

Here are a few examples of center console fishing boats with cabins.

Scout 350 LXF

motorboat with cabin

The Scout 350 LXF features a large open bow with bench seating and a tanning deck.  The benches and the deck are both padded for additional comfort.

At the rear, there is rearward facing bench seating and plenty of open space for fishing.  This is partially shaded by the center console’s overhead cover.

The center of the boat features a cockpit with a roof and comfortable seating .  It also houses the door leading into the main cabin and adds some additional interior headroom for the shower and galley areas.

There isn’t a lot of room inside the cabin, but you will find a vee berth that converts to a dinette, a small galley kitchen with a sink and a microwave, and a head that houses a toilet and a shower.  These amenities are filled with a 30-gallon freshwater tank.

You could spend a day or even a weekend inside this cabin, but most would probably be reluctant to live inside of it full-time.  This being said, the outside decks are nice enough that you could stay out there in nice weather and never feel like you’re depriving yourself.

The boat comes in at 34’11” with a beam of 10’9”.  It has a deep draft of 23,” and a weight of 10,800 pounds with two twin Yamaha 350 engines included.  Powering the twin engines is a 334-gallon fuel tank.

This boat comes in at over $300,000.00 and might seem unaffordable at first.  However, you have to realize that both fishing boats and cabin cruisers often cost this much, and this boat actually combines both of them into one.

Dusky 227 Fish Around Cruiser

motorboat with cabin

The Dusky 227 is a 22’7” longboat with an 8’2” beam.  This makes it a trailer-safe boat that can be used for fishing, cruising, and even sleeping in.  The engine on the boat is a 230HP engine with a 60-gallon fuel tank.  This fuel capacity is much lower than some of the cabin cruisers we discussed, but it is on-par with the cuddy cabins.

This boat is a lot less plush than some of the other boats we’ve looked at, but it appears to be a lot more functional in terms of fishing capabilities.  The bow features a small bench and an area that could be used for sitting against the rails.  These areas do not have any padding and are molded into the boat, so they should be ridiculously easy to clean, even after a full day of fishing.

There isn’t any seating at the stern or in front of the center console, which would make running around the boat to get to fishing poles a lot easier.  Move into this center console, and you’ll find a small bench that can be converted into a small vee berth.  Inside the bench is a storage compartment.

For people who want a little more luxury, a bench seat can be added behind the center console, and overhead cover can be added as well.  Additional padding can also be purchased to add over the built-in bench upfront.

A brand new Dusky 227 is very reasonable and can be had for as little as $55,000.00.

Final Thoughts

There are affordable boats with enclosed cabins at all levels.

The key is to decide how much you want to spend and choose a boat that meets both your needs and your budget!

15 Cheap Small Boats With Cabins

15 Cheap Small Boats With Cabins

Do you prefer sailing to camping? (Who wouldn’t – no bugs!!) Then you need a boat with a sleeper cabin. It doesn’t have to be a big boat. Even cuddy cabin boats have a tiny sleeper under the bow. You might be a mostly solo sailor looking for space to nap between trips.

Or a waterfront college kid seeking a pocket-friendly boathouse. Or a teen trying to convince your parents to let you move into the backyard parking bay. Let’s check out some small boats with cabins. They offer style, transportation, pleasure, and affordable accommodation.

Small Boats With Cabins

1. bayliner 285 sb.

Bayliner 285 SB

Whichever boat you end up buying, we recommend avoiding used boats that are sunken salvages, haven’t run in years, or have older jet engines. You should also avoid force outboards, OMC drives, or XDP drives. Keep all this in mind if you’re looking for a Bayliner.

These classy boats are no longer built or sold locally. The last US version was released in 2017, so if you’re buying one on US soil, it’s either used or snuck in from their factory in Brazil. The 285 in the name tells you the boat is 28 feet long, with a cabin that fits 6 people.

The cabin is quite roomy, with a foldaway dinette that converts into a bed for two. A second bed has an optional privacy curtain around it. This single-engine boat also has a full-sized galley complete with a microwave, fridge, stove, pantry, drawers, and a big kitchen sink.

The Bayliner 285D is known for its natural lighting. It achieves this through side windows and multiple hatches. The boat also has an extra dining table, sink, and fridge up top. The back has a mounting platform, a towing arch for water sports, and a stainless steel propeller.

2. Jeanneau 1095 NC

Jeanneau 1095 NC

If you want a small boat with cabins large enough to fit your family , consider the Jeanneau. You can get a two-cabin or three-cabin version of this 35-foot boat. It’s a bit on the bigger side for a ‘small boat’. But its fuel efficiency is remarkable, you’ll save a lot at the gas pump.

The boat has recessed side decks that neatly fold out of sight to give you more working space. And while it’s a spacious boat to begin with, the sliding door and L-shaped lounge layout make the boat feel even roomier. The four-seater dinette easily folds into a double bed.

In terms of performance, the boat has a bow thruster that can weather the choppiest waters. The boat has glass windows on all sides and sunroofs that slide open, so the cabin is flooded with natural light. Downstairs, the bathroom has a separate shower and toilet area, so yay!

3. Sea Ray Sun Sport 230

Sea Ray Sun Sport 230

When we’re looking at small boats with cabins, the dimensions vary. Some experts say a small boat is anything under 64 feet though, and Sea Ray cruisers range in size from 19 feet to 40 feet. And unlike the two boats we just looked at, Sea Rays are still being made in 2022.

But what’s so special about this model? For one thing, it was voted boat of the year in 2020. This 23-foot boat has a 50-gallon engine and a 19° hard chine hull. Its proprietary Vesselview tech allows onboard management on any smartphone, whether it’s an Apple or an Android.

The boat also has an electric windlass below deck so you can easily control the anchor. The 9” digital dashboard and Fusion sound system offers a cushy cabin party. It’s a bowrider with cushy seats both above and below the cabin. European versions have different specs though.

4. Pro-Line 20 Express

Pro-Line 20 Express

This 20-foot cabin cruiser is built with fishing in mind, so it has dedicated features that include an 11-gallon bait-well, and a 27-gallon fish box aka live-well. The boat has a 68-gallon fuel tank with a 200hp engine. Its 19° hard chine deadrise has a medium draft of 15 inches.

The boat may seem tiny, but it can fit 7 people and has overnight accommodation below the bow. But it has a higher bridge than some boats in this class, so you do need 5 feet of clearance for that guardrail and those antennae. The boat also has a built-in fishfinder.

For easy access, the boat has a small ladder beside the motor. And while the cuddy cabin is adequate, it only has two small side windows and a square one at the front, so it’s not as well-lit as some of the other cabin cruisers we’ve looked at. But its fishing features are top-notch.

5. Sting Ray Cuddy Cabin

Sting Ray Cuddy Cabin

String Ray makes cuddy cabin boats in different sizes, but we’re going to focus on the 208, their 20-foot model. Some of the older models were marked as 207 (20 feet 7 inches vs the newer 20 feet 8 inches). It has a 34-gallon fuel tank, a 6-gallon water tank, and an icebox.

This is a hard chine v-bottom boat with a steep deadrise of 20° so it planes beautifully. The sleeper cabin is on the shorter side, but the boat is designed with a wider bow so you can laterally fit up to three people in there. You can also order a few free features for the boat.

These add-ons include an Italian steering wheel , a removable cooler, and a stereo. If you get them as part of the brand’s convenience package, you’ll save at least a thousand dollars. The cabin is fairly dark though, with only a single sunroof that lets daylight in through the bow.

6. Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21

Atlas Boat Works Pompano 21

This 21-foot boat has a stocky footprint and a centralized bridge that make it seem smaller than it is. And unlike all the other boats we’ve looked at, the Atlas 21 has a hard-top. The advantage is you can expand your sleeping space by stretching a fabric cover past the bridge.

You can add a slip-cover on the side of the bridge too. It’ll keep the wind and waves out of your eyes since the windshields only protect the front. The windshield does have wipers though, which is a nice touch. The Pompano 21 reaches a top speed of 17 knots.

The boat has an acute angular bow and a hard chine hull, with a relatively deep draft of 2 feet. Everything submerged is bronze. Its cabin has four port holes that open, and they each have insect screens. Since the hull is so hard, the cabin has customized v-berth cushions.

7. Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser

Dusky 227 Fish Cruiser

Here’s another hard-top model you could check out. It’s a center console boat that’s 22 inches long has unfettered 360° access from the cockpit. It can also be categorized as a walkaround boat because there’s a clear path along the perimeter plus guardrails at the bow.

Behind the Johnson 200, Mercury, or Suzuki engine, the boat has a proprietary boarding bracket called a Dusky Drive. This fiberglass platform makes it easy to step on and off the boat as you load your catch. It makes a suitable and sturdy diving platform and loading bay.

This boat can sail relatively skinny waters since its draft is only 12 inches. But it does have a hard chine with a 20° deadrise. The fuel capacity is 60 gallons and the tiny cabin is tucked beneath that bridge. The boat also has rod holders and a storage cubby for your trawling nets.

8. Campion Ex 18 OB SC

Campion Ex 18 OB SC

Campion is a popular brand, but it was sold to a private equity firm that now puts out explorer boats like the EX 18 OB SC. This Canadian company offers an 18-foot cuddy cabin boat that retains the fame and features of its predecessors. Start with the bow walkaround.

This gives you complete accessibility as you grapple and wrangle big fish. Other helpful accessories include built-in rod holders and tackle boxes. The cabin might be tiny, but it has a porta-potty. And since it’s mainly for fishing, you can adjust the seating to make room.

By tweaking the seating sections, you allow additional space for your catch and any extra fishing gear. The seats aren’t luxurious, but they’re comfy enough for extended fishing sessions. And every time you dock, you can use the built-in pump to empty your sewers.

9. Jet Capsule Mini Yacht

Jet Capsule Mini Yacht

Jet-powered boats are going out of fashion because their spares are rare, which makes them hard to maintain. So people opt for personal watercrafts or PWCs instead (aka jet skis). But if you want a space-age boat that skims the water like a dream, try the Jet Capsule Mini Yacht.

It’s a 24-foot contraption that looks more like a space pod than a boat. But it does float, and it looks extremely cool. The boat is molded from vacuum-infused carbon with a sliding door and windows on all sides. These windows are photochromatic, meaning they go dark or light.

Their opacity or transparency depends on the levels of external light. And while the yacht has no cabin as such, you can customize it to have benches, recliners, or sofa beds , so it’s definitely safe to sleep in. The boat can hit 40mph (35 knots) and handle rough waters too.

10. Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

Let’s look at some slightly longer boats with cabins. The Rinker is a 27-foot model, so the sleeper is spacious enough to hold four people. And you can stand upright in the cabin since it has 6 feet 5 inches of headroom. The galley has a cooktop, a fridge, plus a Bluetooth stereo.

The boat has an arch that supports the bimini cover, turning the entire deck into a camper with extra sleeping space. The stern has an extended swim platform with a shower set-up, an optional barbeque grill, a concealed ladder, pop-out cleats, and a hidden storage trunk too.

Meanwhile, the bow has walkaround guardrails for access and a spotlight for night-time fishing and visibility. It doubles as a security light when you sleep on the boat. The cabin has a sink, a cooktop, air conditioning, with removable round tables both above and below deck.

11. Four Winns Vista 238

Four Winns Vista 238

As you make your way down this list of small boats with cabins, you may feel uneasy. How come? Because so many of these boats seem to be out of production! This doesn’t mean they’re bad boats. It means technology has improved and people want bigger boat cabins!

Still, the models we’re looking at are largely cuddy cabins with a tiny sleeper spot under the bow. But this Four Winns Vista is a good option, with its massive sleeper space – the boat has four whole berths! It’s a 23-foot boat with an obsolete OMC engine, so look out for that!

The cabin has two twin berths and a bathroom that has a toilet, a shower, and a hand basin. And the boat can reach a top speed of 38 knots. The galley has a cooktop, a sink, and a fridge plus carpets and curtains. Outside, the boat has a swim platform , a ladder, and a bimini top.

12. Azimut Magellano 43

Azimut Magellano 43

Remember, the upper end of small boats is 64 feet, so this 43-foot luxury yacht still falls within the category. It’s an Italian vessel, and is the smallest in its class, with its elder siblings being the Azimut 50 and the Azimut 64. So yes, this is technically their small boat.

This three-tiered boat has rooftop seating, a covered bridge, and a cabin below deck. This bowrider boat has a walkaround platform with guardrails and a sundeck at the front. The covered mid-section of the boat has a full-size galley, sink, and dining area with tables.

Below deck, the boat has luxurious rooms that rival any AirBnB. It was based on a trawler, which is why the internal space is so open. Despite all the bells and whistles, this boat is complex enough for sailing veterans yet simple enough for first-time boaters. Bellissima!

13. Monterey 355SY

Monterey 355SY

Let’s downsize a bit for this 35-foot yacht. It comes in hard-top or soft-top options, though of course, that will affect the price point. And the massive cabin has three oval port holes on each side. But there’s a 33-foot version of the boat with two port holes and a smaller cabin.

Said cabin is quite large, with 6 feet 4 inches of head room. It’s a hard-chined 17° boat with a deep draft over 3 feet. It has large tanks too – 210 gallons for fuel and 28 gallons for water. It also has a 28-gallon holding tank for the boat head and bathroom. Astern, there’s a platform.

It’s ideal for swimming and diving, but it also gives access to the sun island, a specialty rear-facing seating area that’s built for basking. The boat has appliances both above and below deck, including sinks, fridges, and cabinetry. It gives off a feeling of hi-tech luxury and space.

14. Tiara 43LE

Tiara 43LE

If you’d like a boat that’s fresh off the mint, you could try the 2022 version of this Tiara 43LE. It’s on the bigger side at 43 feet and has a 600hp engine that has 3 motors and can reach speeds of 58 mph. The boat has a hard-top and swiveling armchairs for varied layouts.

The rotating seats have built-in footrests, and the Tiara 43LE has an outboard so there’s more internal space in the aft. Even better, the rear terrace can fold in and out to create additional room. And there’s a chaise lounge for front seating at the bow as well as the back.

Downstairs, the toilet and the shower are separate, and you can host four or more people between the queen-size berth at the back and the double bed berth in the middle of the cabin. The boat runs on Garmin Marine tech and has other components in its electronic package.

15. Micro-Plus 16MK IV

We don’t often recommend buying used boats , and we explained why at the beginning of this list. But some high-quality boats are no longer in production, so if you really want that model, you’ll have to get a pre-loved one. This red weekend cruiser falls under that category.

It was built in the 1970s by a company that’s long dead now. At 16 feet, the boat is on the smaller side. It has a centrally positioned steering wheel designed with a door beside it. Behind the door sits a sizeable cabin that’s roomy enough for two people to sleep at a time.

The cabin has two front windows and two side ones, and the boat has a Johnson 70 engine fitted at the back. A retro windshield protects your eyes while driving, but the deck of the boat is on the cozier side meaning you can only fit a limited amount of gear back there.

Additional Information

Many owners compare their C-Dory to a trusted old Volkswagen or Jeep because of its go-anywhere qualities and simple maintenance. Yet these boats are thoroughly modern, incorporating the best of proven materials and ample space for the latest electronics.

By definition a dory is a flat bottom boat, with high flaring sides. The C-Dory is a modern refinement of this classic design type. The planing hull is nearly flat at the stern and gradually becomes a “V” at the bow. Deep reverse chines channel the flow of water, holding it under the boat, increasing lift and decreasing wake and spray. Heavy plank lines along the sides contribute to the C-Dory’s classic, salty appearance. They also stiffen the hull and serve as spray knockers, making the boat pleasantly dry running. The brow of the cabin roof reduces glare in the windows and adds to the boat’s distinctive lines.

Maneuverability at speed is balanced and predictable, even in heavy seas. The boat holds her course with little effort. The hull’s flatness toward the stern greatly reduces the rolling motions, making cruising in rough water much more pleasant. Fishermen will love the way the boat tracks at trolling speeds, allowing the focus to remain on the fishing. And with only 7” of draft and a thick bottom she can easily be beached for beach combing adventures.

The 22’ Cruiser provides a spacious 4’6” aft cockpit, with plenty of elbowroom for two or three fishing buddies. The high sides assure safety even in rough water and provide a feeling of security for the entire family. The cabin with over 6’2” of headroom provides cozy shelter. It features a comfortable dinette, galley, sleeping area & pilot’s station with excellent all-around visibility.

The dinette is located along the port side of the cabin, it has ample storage under its seats, and it makes into a 6’2” berth. The pilots station and galley are located along the starboard side. The galley consists of a stainless steel sink and an 18 gallon water supply with electric pump. The forward section of the cabin features a 6’3” “V” berth, reading light, a large deck hatch, and a portable toilet. It is separated from the main cabin by a privacy curtain.

The interior trim is neat and utilitarian, with emphasis on easy maintenance and durability. The cabinetry is composed of fiberglass with Teak wood trim. Cushions are made of high quality foam covered with durable ‘Sunbrella’ boat canvas. The colors coordinate with the exterior trim. All of the cushions can be removed so the interior can be cleaned.

outboard-cabin-cruiser

An outboard cabin cruiser is a small, recreational motor vessel with at least one cabin and an outboard motor.

These small boats are fine for coastal cruising with family or friends, and are suitable for fishing and other nautical activities. The size of the outboard varies with the vessel's intended use.

Fiberglass is the most commonly employed material for these hulls. There is usually one, sometimes two cabins and a small galley in the saloon. The outboard avoids loss of space to an inboard engine.

The number of cabins, one, two, even three, will depend on the number of people habitually using the boat. Motor size will be determined by vessel use. While fishing does not require much speed, tow sports such as wakeboard and water skiing necessitate a powerful motor.

- Good for short cruises - Less maintenance than larger craft

- Relatively little comfort

Crispy 660 CABIN

Crispy 660 CABIN project rises from a client’s request to have a small planing boat with a cabin, a hull to be easy built in plywood and epoxy, a boat powered with an headache-free outboard engine; he will sail the boat as a small week-end cruiser in coastal areas, channels and lakes, taking advantage of the interiors, made by a full size double berth in the lower cabin (with a real marine toilet), a decent amount of space for lockers, stoves and a sink in the cabin ; basically all you need to cruise for a prolonged weekend with the protection of a small cabin, all cooked in a “nu classic” looking small planing boat.

Crispy 660 cabin is the cruising development of our open boat “Crispy” family: an average sized cruising motorboat with plenty of space to fish, sunbath , take a rest and explore the coastal areas or nearbies islands

Hull and structures are derived from Crispy 650 open boat , slightly modified to cope with the different weight of the superstructure, and with a new flared design of the hull topisdes ; the hull is thus made by a structural grid of marine plywood bulkheads linked by a T shaped solid wood keel beam and an array of longitudinal stringers running from bow to transom, this one made by a 58 mm thick sandwich of plywood and solid laminated wood bonded with epoxy; cockpit, deck and superstructure are made by bonded plywood panels, light, stiff and easy to build.

Topsides are made by two layers of 6 mm thick plywood (or solid wood if you prefer) veneers overlapped and bonded on the structure; the boat can be powered with a single or double outboard engine up to 160 HP (single engine) or 2 x 100 HP , giving her a top speed of approximately 31 knots ;

crispy 660 3d hull

Hull geometry with flared topsides is clearly shown here

Plans are as usual super-detailed with all the developed panels, a huge amount of structural details and several drawings specifically dedicated to systems : electrical, black water, fuel system, bilge system and freshwater system.

All in all Crispy 650 is good choice if you want a classical look coastal cruiser to be built and operated with a reasonable budget , avoiding bigger boats and too expensive powerplants , and she features a modern wooden-epoxy composite hull 15% lighter than a “normal” GRP boat of the same size.

In this kind of boats as usual deck and cockpit arrangement can be widely customized to suit your needs, ranging from pure coastal cruise, to a serious fisherman.

Crispy 660 CABIN DIY plywood epoxy fisherman int1

Here it is the interiors layout detailed in plans: a double v berth on the bow, a separate marine toilet, pilot steering position, a galley featuring a couch and sink and stove.  cockpit has two lateral seats: hatches on the floor are made in order to easily do maintenance works on systems (fuel tanks, batteries and other systems); two lateral seats can be built in the cockpit

How to build her: the hull is in marine oukume plywood and solid wood battens notched on plywood bulkheads, all glued with epoxy resin, chines are reinforced with glass tapes epoxy laminated. The construction will start setting up the plywood bulkheads on a cheap wood scaffold; we’ll proceed to link the bulkheads with stringers and keel backbone, gluing all together with thickened epoxy, thus making a sturdy and light structural grid. The planking will be made with plywood panels glued on the stringers and bulkheads; chines between panels will be stiffened with glass tapes both inside and outside, the same thing will be done among bulkheads and panels; deck and cockpit will follow the same scheme, plywood panels glued with epoxy on a grid of bulkhead and stringers. The hull will behave like a composite monocoque, light, strong and stiff. The boat can be customized with all the accessories that you need: fishing rod holders, additional seats, a retractable bimini on the cockpit, a diving equipment rack, and so on.
