The Flag blue Awlgrip finished hull is a desired color, while best-in-class technologies are employed in the yacht's overall construction. The composite structure of Dupont Kevlar, vinylester resins, core-cell foam and engineered fabrics are vacuum bagged and built in only three major molds to eliminate unsightly joint areas and achieve superior strength that withstands the punishment of rough seas and floating objects.

Marlow Explorer Yachts are limited production yachts built under constant supervision and stringent quality control procedures. The Marlow Explorer 70E is designed and built to cross the oceans of the world in comfort and safety while the proprietary Strut Keel technology allows inland and island cruising with fully protected running years.

Only the finest components like Dupont Kevlar, CoreCell and enginering construction fabrics are specified for the hull, deck and superstructure of the Marlow Explorer. Vinylester and Epoxy resins and glues are used throughout. Only top quality mechanical components like Aquadrive constant velocity joints, Tides seals, Trace inverters are used. On the lovely hand finished interior quality brands like Sub Zero, Dacor, Asko, Bosch, Franke, Grohe and similar are found. Fine fabrics of Ultraleather and other top brands grace the interior. The result is reminiscent of an era when quality, not quantity was the hallmark of a fine yacht.

The salon is elegantly and tastefully decorated. In addition to the 24V Italian and Danish lighting and behind valance lighting, there are three well placed table lamps, giving the salon and dining area a very distinct ambiance. The tinted windows are covered with beautiful wood blinds and curtain accents. This is a very warm and inviting area. The starboard side of the salon has elegant, supple Ultraleather built in U-settee providing seating for several guests. The flat screen TV in on an electric lift with remote control. On either side of the TV there are two very comfortable leather chairs along the port side just forward of the stairs down to the crew quarters. The dining area has an rectangular dining table with glass top over teak and and Six  dining chairs. There is a custom china cabinet with teak divided and framed glass doors, cupboards and several drawers for dish and glass storage.

The galley is very well equipped with top of the line appliances and plenty of storage for housewares and food. It is U-shaped with beautiful black granite countertops throughout, creating a lovely setting for entertaining guests in the pilothouse.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is athwartship, making it very roomy with teak and holly sole throughout with oversize head. She carries an island queen berth with drawers under berth in addition to a dresser and linen closet. There are port lights with screens, night lighting around the berth as well as behind valances. All lighting fixtures are 24V Italian and Danish, giving the stateroom a comfortable atmosphere. The ensuite head is spacious with vanity, black granite counters and several drawers and cabinets with shelves for storage of toiletries, linens etc. This head has tub and shower as well as a separate shower room with sink, mirrored cabinet and other storage. On the aft side of the stateroom, down two steps, is an office area with two desks. Swinging stools nest underneath. There is shelving above one desk with a fax/phone outlet at each desk. To port, behind teak louvered doors are the upgraded washer and dryer.

The galley is centrally located on the main deck forward and up 3 steps from the salon. An opening under the aft galley cabinets allows visibility right through to the salon and aft deck. The galley counters are granite and the under-mounted sink is on the forward side of the galley counter so you are looking out the front windows of the yacht when standing at the sink. The Dacor cooktop on the port side of the U-shaped counter and has removable stainless steel sea rails to keep pots from moving about on the smooth glass cooktop. CREW QUARTERS

The full beam crew quarters are aft of the engine room and feature a double bunk, night stand, hanging lockers and refrigerator. The crew has their own head with shower. There is a separate entrance in the cockpit so the crew does not need to enter the salon to access their quarters. There is also a hatch that provides access while at sea.

ENGINE ROOM / MECHANICAL

The engine room has full standing headroom, access to every piece of equipment and machinery. It is accessed through a watertight door with a viewing port. All cables are neatly bundled, valves clearly labeled, plumbing color coded, gauges at eye level and plenty of light to work make this an ideal "boys toy room".

The sea chest is at the forward end of the engine room and provides sea water to the engines, generator, air-conditioning, and all the other items on the yacht that need sea water for cooling. Each item has its own shut-off valve for servicing. The two 900 gallon fuel tanks are just in front of the forward engine room bulkhead. This is the center of buoyancy of the yacht so your running angle will not change as your fuel level changes. The fuel tanks also provide an additional layer of soundproofing between the engines and the cabins forward.

ELECTRONICS

Virtually ll electronics were replaced in 2014. The system emphasizes redundancy and reliability thus – dual Radar, Dual Direct tv, dual mini-servers to run Nobeltec and a separate Furuno Navnet TZT system. This yacht is constructed with the most modern materials and techniques providing more strength with less weight than possible with conventional technology. The use of Kevlar, modified epoxy resins, and high density core materials allows the Marlow Explorer to be stronger than the heaviest of hulls at a fraction of the weight. Modern honeycomb and structural foam is used on every counter, cabinet and sole in the yacht. Even if speed is not a driving factor for you, the increased range and reduced fuel costs will be of great benefit.

Graceful Spirit is a stellar example of Marlow quality. She has been professionally maintained from her inception with an open checkbook. She has been serviced regularly since new and all her service records are up to date and on board.

70 Marlow Explorer

There are a lot of decent boats built in Taiwan these days, but the 70 Marlow Explorer is different. She has the very special feel of a boat built without compromise.

“In the early days of the trawler boom, the Taiwanese were inspired by example and simply copied practices and techniques imported from other countries, said David Marlow, who spends 22 weeks a year at the yard. “Today, a more confident generation of Taiwanese craftsmen are far more inventive.

That attitude, combined with Marlow’s personal history, tells you a lot about this yacht. Marlow is the son of a commercial fisherman, was building boats before he could shave and went to sea before he could drive. After six years of service aboard commercial ships, he made landfall. Through hard work and a bit of luck, he earned a solid reputation and success in yacht sales. He spared no expense in creating the 70, yet not a cent was invested in her thoughtlessly. Her outfitting and finish are exceptional, yet her price is a bargain in her class.

“In the past, the focus was on doing things faster, Marlow said. “I challenge our craftsmen to do things better.

The 70 is, in many ways, a showcase of details. All cabinet interiors, even the cutouts for built-in appliances, are finished. Drawers have dovetailed wood interiors and hearty metal slides. End grain on the exterior teak rails is capped, and joints are scarfed. With the exception of the German interior hardware, all of the 70’s stainless steel is custom fabricated in Taiwan by a company that specializes in aviation-grade weldments. The work is spectacular.

Marlow has the cost advantage of selling the 70 factory-direct, but there is more to the story. Whether bypassing middlemen and buying teak by the log or bargaining for container space to ship U.S.-made components to the yard, Marlow is tenacious in his quest to trim the fat.

“I learned the value of money early on because I didn’t have any, he said.

His facility is designed specifically for and dedicated to the 70’s production. Developing tooling and training craftsmen in the use of modern materials required a significant investment. Stitched multi-directional reinforcements are used exclusively, and the 70’s bottom and topsides are cored with foam, which is vacuum-bagged in place. Two layers of Kevlar reinforcement beneath the gelcoat provide additional puncture resistance. Bulkheads are cored fiberglass, and stringers are molded fiberglass over foam. Foam coring is also used in non-structural bulkheads and to stiffen interior and exterior decks.

In all, Marlow’s approach is high-tech for a market where more traditional fiberglass construction methods are the norm. Carefully designed and detailed systems complement the 70’s clean, finished bilges.

While yacht designer Doug Zurn assisted, Marlow penned the profile and arrangement. Her silhouette has a salty, traditional flavor, yet is too contemporary to be branded a trawler yacht. This is in large part because of her reverse transom, the feature that sets her apart from her smaller sister.

Dark colors do not favor poorly tooled fiberglass, and the 70’s rich blue gelcoat is as fair and blemish-free as any I have seen. Teak decking is bonded in place, and dimpled nonslip surfaces are effective, yet easy on the flesh. Tempered, laminated safety glass, custom made in England, is bonded into molded-in receivers in the superstructure tooling and should be leak-free.

Marlow has a number of stock interior and exterior layouts for the 70, however, he is handy with the pen and seems to take pleasure in dealing with challenging clients. To date, no two boats have been quite the same.

I tested hull number six of the 65-70 series, which was created for an East Coast yachtsman moving up from a 55-footer. The 70’s covered afterdeck has built-in seating, a wet bar, a barbecue and controls hidden in the molded-in cabinetwork. There is also bench seating on the bow. Stairs lead to the boat deck/flying bridge, and there is direct access to the exterior helm station from the pilothouse. The flying bridge helm is not segregated and is central to a lounge area with a wet bar, a refrigerator and a barbecue. This is a feature owner-operators will appreciate.

The detail and craftsmanship in the 70’s satin-finished teak interior is well above average and some of the finest work I have seen from Taiwan’s gifted joiners. Access is from the afterdeck, or from pilothouse doors to port and starboard. The deckhouse’s open arrangement enhances the sense of interior volume. The saloon is aft, the galley is amidships and the pilothouse/lounge is forward. This is a conventional approach, however, Marlow cleverly arranged things so that it is possible to eyeball the stern from the pilothouse-an advantage for shorthanded operation.

A stair in the saloon leads to a split-level master stateroom with a king berth. There are separate head and shower compartments, and an office area is a step down. Two guest staterooms with private heads are accessible from a stair in the pilothouse. Stairs aft in the saloon lead to a crew/kids’ cabin, and to engineroom access. Exterior access to the engineroom is possible by sacrificing the afterdeck wet bar and barbecue.

Marlow spent many hours fussing with hull forms, and the result is rather unique. While the 70’s foundation is a conventional semi-displacement form, she has twin strut keels that surround the propeller shafts in hydrodynamic fairings. Marlow’s own data, gleaned from comparing the 65 with and without the fairings, suggest the strut keels improve efficiency and tracking. They also offer partial protection of the wheels, and modest propeller pockets keep draft to just 4 feet, 5 inches.

It took no more than five minutes for Marlow and me to crank up the 70’s pair of 800 hp Caterpillar 3406Es and cast off. With full side decks, plenty of power and a two-speed bow thruster, an experienced couple would have no problem handling her. I would suggest either wing stations or a plug-in remote on her Portuguese bridge.

Our sea trial was conducted all up with full fuel, full water, a tender and about 14,000 pounds of owner’s gear aboard. I recorded a top speed of 23.2 knots at 2300 rpm and a cruising speed of 20.5 knots at 2100 rpm. Marlow’s data indicate that she gains a few knots lightly loaded. Easing along at 2000 rpm, I recorded a speed of 17.9 knots and the Caterpillar electronics indicated a fuel burn of 54 gallons per hour.

If the 70 were just an average boat, her $1,500,000 base price would be a good deal. She is much more. She is proof that it’s not simply money that makes a great boat.

"Echoes" has a three stateroom, three head layout with a seperate crew quarters and head. She was built with an optional private stairway from the salon to the owner's suite, in addition to the stairway down from the helm deck to the VIP and Guest Staterooms. She also has direct access via an interior stairway to the engine room from the salon.

The aft deck and walk around decks are wide and protect all the way forward to the Portuguese bridge. Decks are teak with a cap rail of high gloss varvished teak which was revarnished in June 2023. Stairs from the aft bridge lead up to the flybridge and dingy deck which feature a 1200# stainless steel davit for launching the 11' Waker Bay RIB tender. The flybridge is protected by a fiberglass hardtop and an EZZ2CY enclosure. Two L-shaped seating areas each have their own dining tables. At the helm are two Stidd Helm Chairs and a full Garmin Electronics suite and a Yacht Controller remote.

From the flybridge helm deck heading down the interior stairs, you arrive at the lower helm deck and galley. A single Stidd chair sits centerline at the helm providing control of the boat and navigation equipment. Opposite the flybridge staircase lies the large galley which is well equipped with Sub Zero fridge/freezer drawers, a Sub Zero wine cooler, Fisher Paykal dishwasher and gas stove. Countertops have teak fiddles.

The main salon is a few steps down from the galley and is configured to feel like a much larger yacht. The deletion of formal dining allowed for the addition of the owner's stairwell and a larger setee in the salon. The salon features two Stressless chairs to port and a 50" Sharp 4K Smart UHD TV that raises electronically from a port side cabinet when desired. Interior soft goods were replaced in 2018. Just forward of the salon entrance from aft deck on the port side is a stairwell that leads to the Crew Quarters and engine room, allowing for engine checks day and night without having to step outside.

The Master Suite, located midship, can be accessed from the owner's private stairwell in the salon or the main stairwell forward. Accommodations include a king sized  bed, a wall of full length lockers and a large "his and hers" head to port. An office and storage area are located at the aft end of the stateroom which also houses a full size washer and dryer behind louvered doors.

Forward of the Master is the Guest Stateroom with two crossover single beds and the VIP Stateroom with a queen berth. Both Guest and VIP staterooms feature ensuite heads and showers.

The Crew Quarters is aft of the engine room and can be accessed through the salon stairwell. The engine room offers abundant headroom and great access to all machinery for easy maintenance.

Marlow Explorer Yachts are limited production yachts built under constant supervision and stringent quality control procedures. The Marlow Explorer 70E is designed and built to cross the oceans of the world in comfort and safety while the proprietary Strut Keel technology allows inland and island cruising with fully protected running years.

Additional Description

Only the finest components like Dupont Kevlar, CoreCell and enginering construction fabrics are specified for the hull, deck and superstructure of the Marlow Explorer. Vinylester and Epoxy resins and glues are used throughout. Only top quality mechanical components like Aquadrive constant velocity joints, Tides seals, Trace inverters are used. On the lovely hand finished interior quality brands like Sub Zero, Dacor, Asko, Bosch, Franke, Grohe and similar are found. Fine fabrics of Ultraleather and other top brands grace the interior. The result is reminiscent of an era when quality, not quantity was the hallmark of a fine yacht.

Walkthrough

The salon is elegantly and tastefully decorated. In addition to the 24V Italian and Danish lighting and behind valance lighting, there are three well placed table lamps, giving the salon and dining area a very distinct ambiance. The tinted windows are covered with beautiful wood blinds and curtain accents. This is a very warm and inviting area. The starboard side of the salon has elegant, supple Ultraleather built in U-settee providing seating for several guests. The flat screen TV in on an electric lift with remote control. On either side of the TV there are two very comfortable leather chairs along the port side just forward of the stairs down to the crew quarters.

The dining area has an rectangular dining table with glass top over teak and and Six  dining chairs. There is a custom china cabinet with teak divided and framed glass doors, cupboards and several drawers for dish and glass storage.

The galley is very well equipped with top of the line appliances and plenty of storage for housewares and food. It is U-shaped with beautiful black granite countertops throughout, creating a lovely setting for entertaining guests in the pilothouse.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is athwartship, making it very roomy with teak and holly sole throughout with oversize head. She carries an island queen berth with drawers under berth in addition to a dresser and linen closet. There are port lights with screens, night lighting around the berth as well as behind valances. All lighting fixtures are 24V Italian and Danish, giving the stateroom a comfortable atmosphere.

The ensuite head is spacious with vanity, black granite counters and several drawers and cabinets with shelves for storage of toiletries, linens etc. This head has tub and shower as well as a separate shower room with sink, mirrored cabinet and other storage.

On the aft side of the stateroom, down two steps, is an office area with two desks. Swinging stools nest underneath. There is shelving above one desk with a fax/phone outlet at each desk. To port, behind teak louvered doors are the upgraded washer and dryer.

VIP Stateroom, Forward Port

A full head with separate stall showers is accessible from the stateroom or the companionway to allow use as a day head. Outboard of the shower is a large linen locker. Both the head and the shower have exhaust fans vented outside the vessel.
