Important Things to Keep in Mind about Engines When You Rent a Motorboat

If you decide to rent a motorboat , we are generally talking about the kinds of outboard motors or engines that come with these boats. Some of the major engine manufacturers are Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude, and Suzuki, and we’ll look at some of their latest offerings when we talk about it below. Most motorboat motors offer generous warranties of up to six years, so they are generally very reliable. The biggest differences between all of the motors are in terms of horsepower and efficiency. Fuel range and economy are also concerns if you decide to rent a motorboat for a big group of people. Here are seven of the best outboard motors that you should consider when renting a motorboat, especially if you want to purchase a motorboat in the near future.

Mercury Motors

mercury motors

The new Mercury 4.6-liter V8 Verado 450R features a 2.4-liter twin-screw supercharger and a Sport Master gearcase. It is lightweight at only about 70o pounds. It’s available with a 25-inch shaft or a 20-inch shaft. The three-year warranty should give you confidence that your motor will last a long time on the water. Also, it runs on 89-octane pump gas, which makes it easy to refuel. The 450R is one of the best motors you can get these days.

Evinrude Motors

Evinrude Motors

Evinrude offers a new 150 horsepower E-TEC, which is a 1.9-liter three-cylinder direct-injected two-stroke engine. It has a good fuel efficiency of 12 mpg at a fast pace on a 20-foot boat. These 150 horsepower outboard motors can be used on all kinds of boats because they can be controlled via a mechanical steering cable, external hydraulic, integrated power steering, and even a tiller. All in all, these Evinrude motors are pretty simple to operate!

Torqueedo Travel 1103C Motors

Torqueedo is known for big outboard motors called Deep Blue motors, which are up to 80-horsepower equivalent. However, those types of motors are only designed for the megayachts of billionaires. While one of those 80-horse motors and its BMW-developed battery pack sells for more than $50,000, the new Travel 1103C is under $3,000, and it is perfect for any boat that weighs less than about 3,400 pounds. The new Travel 1103C has an onboard 915 Wh lithium battery, and it can run for six hours at half-throttle, which could mean up to 20 miles of range (depending on your boat). The Torqueedo is perfect for a small motorboat—it only makes 33 dB of noise and weighs less than 40 pounds. What’s more, you can extend the battery life by charging it with a solar panel while you are boating.

Yamaha XTO Offshore Motors

Yamaha XTO

Because some modern center console boats stretch well beyond 50 feet, Yamaha has built an engine designed for these types of boats: the 425 horsepower XTO Offshore . This is a 5.6-liter V8 with direct fuel injection. It also features integrated power steering, and it can weigh up to 1000 pounds. According to Yamaha’s performance report, four of these motors on the back of a 41-foot Regulator center console will allow it to reach a speed of almost 65 mph.

Suzuki DF350A Motors

suzuki motorboats

Although Suzuki is better known as a mainstream value brand, the new DF350A motor shows that they are trying to get into the high-horsepower game. The DF350A is a big 4.4-liter naturally aspirated V6, which uses two counter-rotating propellers to increase hookup and negate torque effects. This can be important and economical for single-engine boats. For example, on a Sea Pro 239, the DFA350A pushed the boat to 54 mph and got 3.35 mpg while cruising in the high 20s. Quad 350s pushed an aluminum Gaudet 38 to 65.8 mph. So, the DF350A offers a lot of horsepower for the price. While the MSRP is $31,565, it is possible to get slightly used DF350As for much less than that.

Hangkai 6.5HP Outboard Motors

Hangkai motors

These are some of the best motors you can buy because they are powerful yet fuel-efficient. The 6.5 Hp 4 stroke engine is well-designed with an ergonomic handle and a comfortable grip, which helps you carry it easily, especially because it is relatively light. It can power a boat carrying a load of 4 people, but the boat will go faster when fewer people are onboard. The motor has a 12-liter gas tank that uses pure gasoline. It has a pump impeller with a start rope and start key for easy ignition. It also features a water cooling system to prevent overheating.

Sea Dog Water Sports Motor

If you want a boat primarily for maneuvering through narrow areas and for towing people, then this Sea Dog motor will provide all the necessary power you need. It is a 2 stroke outboard engine with 2.5 horsepower, enough to power a small motorboat. It has a 1.2-liter fuel capacity , and it uses gasoline and oil mixed at a ratio of 25:1. It is air-cooled and has an economical, compact design that makes it easy to carry around. It has a CDI ignition system as well as a recoil (manual) start system. Its idling speed is 3,000 rpm, and the propeller’s diameter is only 18cm, which allows it to run quietly with minimal noise.

Make the Most of your Motorboat Rental!

Just like the car industry, the boating industry is full of all kinds of motor manufacturers that compete to build and sell the best motors for their market. It is a great idea to rent a motorboat through Boatsetter and do the research and try out all of these brands by seeing how they look on the back of a boat at some of the country’s biggest boat shows .

Yamaha's Got a New 7600-RPM, 200-HP Four-Cylinder Engine

We'll take our new engine debuts where we can get them these days. Even if they're in boats.

yamaha four cylinder engine

But the marine industry is a different story, and in recent years some of the coolest new engines— Mercury's V-12 , Honda's V-8 —were designed for boats. Which is also the case for Yamaha's new 1.9-liter four-cylinder, which makes 200 hp at 7600 rpm and can be found powering high-output WaveRunners and jet-drive boats. It's not designed for cars, but the Lemons racers among us can dare to dream.

The 1.9-liter four replaces Yamaha's 180-hp 1.8-liter mill and blurs the performance line between the company's naturally aspirated and supercharged engines. Yamaha's supercharged 1.8-liter makes 255 horsepower, but in a WaveRunner there's not a huge practical difference between the boosted 1.8 in a SVHO model and the naturally aspirated 1.9 that powers HOs. Personal-watercraft manufacturers adhere to an agreement that's something like the old German pact to limit top speeds to 155 mph, except on the water the target is 65 mph. That spec includes a 2-mph fudge factor, which naturally means that PWCs of sufficient horsepower top out at an electronically limited 67 mph. Since a 200-hp WaveRunner can hit that limit, the only difference is how quick you get there.

a man riding a waverunner

The 1.9-liter, as a new design, enjoys a bundle of changes aimed at durability and refinement. One example: There's an extra bolt connecting the cam chain housing to the block—a little tweak that makes a big difference. "The cam chain room is a thin aluminum casting," says Mark Sagers, senior watercraft factory service technical specialist (in other words, the guy who knows all the engines inside out). "That great big straight piece of aluminum is like a sound board, amplifying the noise of the cam chain. But if you run a fastener from that to the main casting, it knocks that noise way down. That's important when you're sitting right on top of the engine and it's bolted to a guitar body, basically."

Performance-enhancing upgrades include a new exhaust manifold with dedicated pipes for cylinders one and four, a bore increase from 86 mm to 88 mm, and a channel to route cooling water between the exhaust valves to cool the valve seats. The 1.9 even uses about a half-quart less oil than the 1.8, because Yamaha determined that it could cut windage losses (read: increase horsepower) without sacrificing durability. And durability versus performance is always a tradeoff, whether on land or not. "In a 250-cc motocross bike, the maintenance schedule calls for a new piston every nine hours and it's putting out specific power like a NASCAR engine, or almost Indy," says Sagers. "Boats are more on the lower end of high performance, so we can make them last thousands of hours."

a person riding a waverunner

A car engine might well make its horsepower peak beyond 7000 rpm, but it isn't expected to spend much time there. An engine destined for a WaveRunner is a different story. "A lot of the durability testing is done fully loaded at wide open throttle," Sagers says. "These will run a very long time at WOT. Waverunners are often idling or WOT, and there's no middle ground. But I've seen Waverunner engines with more than 1500 hours and no major mechanical work. It's staggering that these mechanical things can live through this."

Still, 200 hp isn't enough for everyone. Logically, it would seem inevitable that this engine will get a supercharger and the 1.8-liter will be retired. Boost prognosticators might find a clue at the 1.9-liter's Coast Guard–mandated intake flame arrester—the intake manifold is cast around it so it can't be sucked into the engine. Which is the kind of thing that would probably only happen if said intake was huffing some major boost. Perhaps soon, it will be.

the engine in a waverunner

In the meantime, you can break the 200-hp barrier without forced induction. And for twin-engine boats, that means Yamaha is packing 400 horsepower into some of its 22-footers, which we imagine would mean 50-plus-mph top speeds given that the 210 FSH hit 48.0 mph with the 1.8s and their 360 total horsepower.

the twin engines in a yamaha 220 fsh boat

Yamaha has built some nice automotive engines—most famously, the Ford Taurus SHO's —but those of us dreaming of 200-hp Yamaha-powered Miatas will probably have to wait a while for these latest ones to hit the salvage yards. (You can spend that interim figuring out how to adapt a closed-loop cooling system, since the jet drive on these engines doubles as a water pump.)

Calling a powerplant a "boat motor" is traditionally a pejorative, meaning a low-revving hunk of iron, an outdated castoff better suited as a mooring. But motors are electric, and that's where things are heading on the highways. So if you appreciate the mechanical complexity and cleverness of engines, boats are the new—and maybe last—frontier.

Here's Why The Yamaha Warrior 1700 Is Worth Looking Into In 2024

  • Yamaha revamped the XV1600 unit to a powerful 1,670cc engine for the Road Star Warrior 1700, boasting 84.3 hp and 99.5 lb-ft torque.
  • The Warrior 1700's riding dynamics shine with an aluminum frame, Kayaba forks, and a light steering response for easy handling in various conditions.
  • Equipped with features like an electric speedometer and LED tail lights, the Warrior 1700 holds value well and is rare to find in stock condition.

There are many things that Yamaha is synonymous with, but for quite a long while, a cruiser wasn't part of that list, let alone a power cruiser . But, like any company keen on expanding its core competencies and staying as relevant as possible, Yamaha took the leap and gave us the Road Star Warrior 1700.

UPDATE: 2024/03/03 23:43 EST BY RAUNAK AJINKYA

The Yamaha Road Star Warrior 1700 was a motorcycle that had a lot on offer, even by today's standards. Given that, we have updated this piece to include a few more bits of relevant information regarding the Yamaha power cruiser.

Admittedly, this wasn't their first go at a power cruiser, what with the 1700 succeeding the XV1600, but the crucial bit is that the follow-up act had a lot more going for it. We'll get into the details in a minute, but the big question is how the 1700 fares as a cruiser today. Despite being out of production for so long, can the Yamaha Road Star Warrior 1700 hold a candle to the standards we expect today? That's just what this piece looks to answer.

All the information in this piece has been sourced from Yamaha's official release of the Warrior 1700. Any bits of missing relevant information were sourced from other reliable sources across the internet.

We Can't Stop Staring At These Awesome Yamaha Cruiser Bikes

The warrior 1700 packs muscular v-twin power.

Yamaha took to the effort of revamping the old 1,602cc unit of the XV1600 while working on its successor. For starters, Yamaha bored the unit to 1,670cc. The engine is an air-cooled, old-school pushrod V-twin mated to a slick 5-speed gearbox with belt drive: true cruiser credentials. Power stands at 84.3 horsepower and a whopping 99.5 lb-ft of torque; a 15% increase in power and 8% in torque over the XV1600.

The Warrior 1700’s engine saw incremental upgrades like 2mm larger pistons, a revised header, new cam profiles, a revamped exhaust, and a new airbox. Thanks to all this, the engine gets more grunt and a 5700 rpm redline as opposed to the 4200 RPM of the XV1600’s engine.

10 Japanese Cruiser Alternatives To A Harley-Davidson

Yamaha warrior 1700 riding dynamics is reassuring.

The Yamaha Warrior 1700, then, is no slouch, managing the quarter-mile sprint in 12.7 seconds . The adoption of an aluminum frame has helped reduce weight by 71 pounds over the XV1600. Moreover, the Warrior employs Kayaba 41 mm upside-down forks lifted from the R1 with all adjustments except spring preload.

The chassis is the best you’ll find in any cruiser, period. With the wide handlebar, there is plenty of leverage to create a light steering response, which makes the Warrior very handy in low-speed corners, tight traffic, and crowded parking lots.

The ride is effortless, with pegs set forward and a relaxed seating position. In addition, with its torquey motor and long wheelbase, the Warrior carries speed with the utmost stability. Though spirited riding is never really a concern for cruisers, this Japanese power cruiser has it covered, even if you have a slippery right hand.

2005 Yamaha Road Star Warrior 1700 Dimensions

5 coolest japanese cruiser bikes on the market right now (5 american cruisers we'd rather buy), the warrior 1700 is well-equipped even by 2024 standards.

One of the other highlights of the Yamaha Road Star Warrior 1700 was the fact that it came with a decent amount of kit as standard. Now, it's important to keep in mind that this was the early 2000s we're talking about, so there was nothing like the kind of kit we see nowadays on modern motorcycles .

That said, it has an electric speedometer, a fuel gauge, an LED odometer, a clock, dual trip meters, and even warning lights for things like neutral selection, high beam, low fuel, and engine diagnostics. In addition, there were also LED tail lights and nine-spoke, 16-inch cast wheels.

The standard color on the Road Star Warrior was white, but if you paid an extra $200, you could spec it in black or red. Spend an additional $800, though, and you could have it midnight black. This doesn't matter now, considering Yamaha doesn't produce the bike anymore, but the used examples tend to follow the same trend of being priced according to the color.

The Yamaha Warrior 1700's Downsides

It’s good to touch on some of the niggles that cruisers are riddled with . Though the Warrior has a fair share of pros, it does come with a few shortcomings. Chief among these is the two-to-one exhaust, which stands out like a sore thumb; a quick fix is to get an aftermarket unit. Secondly, the seats are not the most comfortable nor the most spacious if you’re riding two-up. The lack of a sixth gear can be frustrating when you’re cruising along the freeway.

If you intend to do long journeys, getting a windshield for better air resistance is advisable. Some riders complained about the stock handlebar being awkwardly placed, and if you feel you’re among them, an aftermarket swap might help. Being a high-compression engine, the Warrior can have a delay in a startup, too. Though it usually happens when fitted with aftermarket free-flow exhausts, it can be fixed by an ECU re-map.

Another important thing to touch on is the availability of spares. Since Yamaha stopped making them around 2012, not a lot of dealers would have spares available.

Things To Watch Out For On The Yamaha Warrior 1700

  • 2-into-1 exhaust can become an eyesore after a while.
  • Seat can get uncomfortable, especially on longer journeys.
  • Lack of a sixth cog can make the Warrior 1700 feel strained out on highways.
  • Windshield for better air resistance missed
  • Spares might be hard to come by
  • High-compression V-Twin engine can lead to delayed startups.

These Are Our Favorite Japanese Cruiser Motorcycles Of All Time

Used warrior 1700s are quite rare, used price range: $4,500-$12,500.

While this may seem an exaggeration, not a lot of Warrior 1700s are there that are mint or at least in stock condition. Even though there were different iterations of the Road Star Warrior, getting your hands on one is quite challenging.

Even if you manage to get one, you may have to cough up a premium, given that most sell between $4,500 and $12,500. This price range also points to the fact that the Warrior 1700 is a bike that holds its value rather well, and is only appreciating in value given its rarity.

  • Commercial Use

The period of warranty shall be six months commencing on DELIVERY on any SSV which has been identified as being used for commercial applications.

  • During these periods of warranty:
  • Any part defective by reason of the MANUFACTURER'S faulty workmanship or material will be replaced or repaired free of charge;
  • Any repairs or adjustments made necessary by reason of the MANUFACTURER'S faulty workmanship or material will be performed free of charge.

The MANUFACTURER reserves the right to change the design of any model without obligation to modify any model previously manufactured.

Section B - Subsequent Owner The warranty set forth in Section A may be transferred to any subsequent owner provided that the period of warranty has not expired and that the CUSTOMER has complied with all terms and conditions of this warranty. The subsequent owner has the responsibility for ensuring that a change of registration is sent to YAMAHA at the time of such transfer of ownership.

This transfer MUST be done by contacting the DEALER who will forward the following information to YAMAHA:

  • the complete model and serial number as shown on the original warranty document;
  • the name of the previous owner;
  • the original delivery date of the SSV;
  • the complete name and address of the subsequent owner;
  • the indication that the subsequent owner has received and read the Owner's Manual and this warranty policy.
  • Ensure that the SSV is properly operated, maintained and stored as specified in the Owner's Manual;
  • Give notice to a DEALER of any and all apparent defects immediately upon discovery, and make the entire SSV available at that time for inspection and repair at the DEALER'S place of business;
  • Provide proof of warranty coverage to such DEALER (CUSTOMER'S copy of the New Vehicle Information Statement, N.V.I.S.);
  • Authorize the DEALER to tear down the SSV for diagnostic evaluation should it be required.
  • This warranty does not apply unless:
  • The SSV has been fully assembled and set to the MANUFACTURER'S operating specifications by a DEALER prior to DELIVERY to the CUSTOMER;
  • The CUSTOMER has followed the break-in, maintenance and storage instructions contained in the Owner's Manual and all other instructions shown in the Owner's Manual;
  • The CUSTOMER can provide record of maintenance having been performed as recommended in the Owner's Manual;
  • Requests for repairs under warranty have been made as prescribed in Section C.
  • This warranty does not cover the repair of damage resulting from abuse or neglect of the SSV. Examples of abuse and neglect include, but are not limited to:
  • racing, competition, modification of original parts or abnormal strain;
  • use of lubricants, oils, fuel and additives other than those recommended in the Owner's Manual, improperly installed accessories or use of parts or accessories that are not equivalent in design and quality to genuine Yamaha parts;
  • damage as a result of accidents, collisions, contact with foreign materials, impact, submersion or use of the SSV after discovery of a defect;
  • appearance related damages of body parts. Examples of such damages include but are not limited to: scratches, dents, fading, flaking, peeling.
  • This warranty does not extend to:
  • SSV's which have been modified in any way from the standard specifications as shown in the Owner's Manual, including any SSV whose odometer has been altered;
  • normal wear and tear, corrosion and routine maintenance, such as the recommended service inspections;
  • pre-delivery inspection and assembly;
  • SSV's from which the MANUFACTURER'S identification numbers have been removed or whose identification numbers have been altered or mutilated;
  • wear and tear and/or maintenance parts such as drive chains, clutch plates and facings, oils and lubricants, spark plugs, high-tension cables, batteries, generator brushes, sealed beams and light bulbs, tires, filters, brake pads, drive belts and fuses;
  • inconvenience, loss of time, loss of income or loss of use of the SSV or any consequential damage of any kind;
  • damages from theft, fire, vandalism, explosion, water or acts of God;
  • storage costs, or transportation and shipping costs related to the performance of this warranty;
  • damage due to "flat towing" (see your DEALER for explanation).

Section E - Emissions Control System Warranty YAMAHA warrants to the CUSTOMER of an SSV covered by this warranty that the SSV is designed, built and equipped so as to conform at the time of DELIVERY with all federal emissions standards applicable at the time of manufacture and that it is free from defects in materials and workmanship which would cause it not to meet these standards within a thirty-month period. Failures other than those resulting from defects in material or workmanship, which arise solely as a result of owner abuse and/or lack of proper maintenance, are not covered by this warranty.

Section F This warranty is in addition to, and not a modification of, any warranty required by the laws of any province of Canada.

Subject to any applicable sales or consumer legislation, the above warranty is in lieu of any warranty or representation, expressed or implied, including any warranty of performance, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose on the part of YAMAHA, and any other obligation or liability on behalf of YAMAHA, and the above warranty constitutes your sole remedy and the full liability of YAMAHA. In no event shall YAMAHA be liable for special, incidental or consequential damages howsoever caused, whether by negligence or otherwise resulting directly or indirectly from the use of the SSV, or the SSV having replacement parts or the unavailability of replacement parts.

YAMAHA does not assume, or authorize any person to create or assume for YAMAHA, any obligation or liability in connection with the SSV or any part thereof distributed by YAMAHA.

Original Equipment Tires Tires supplied as original equipment on your SSV are warranted separately by the individual tire manufacturer or its representatives. Generally speaking, this warranty covers defects in workmanship or material.

Storing Your SSV If your SSV is not to be used for 60 days or more, it must be properly stored to ensure against deterioration. You should consult your Owner's Manual for storage details, but WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE AN AUTHORIZED YAMAHA SSV DEALER PREPARE YOUR SSV FOR STORAGE. Their highly-trained staff have the experience and the qualifications to do the job right.

YAMAHA cannot accept responsibility for damage to your vehicle or personal injury resulting from negligence or lack of experience in the preparation of your SSV for storage.

Pre-delivery Inspection Checklist The DEALER has assembled, inspected and tested the SSV according to the Yamaha SSV Pre-delivery Inspection Checklist prior to DELIVERY to the CUSTOMER (some items may not be applicable to all models). These items include:

  • Fluid Levels
  • Drive System
  • Cooling System
  • Fuel / Throttle System
  • Wheels / Tires / Suspension
  • Steering and Controls
  • Electrical System
  • Replacing damaged or missing parts

The Yamaha SSV Pre-delivery Inspection Checklist has been provided to the CUSTOMER at the time of DELIVERY.

Change of Address or Other Owner Information If you should move after you have purchased your SSV, please contact the DEALER who will forward the required information to YAMAHA. Provide the DEALER with the model name and serial number as shown on the N.V.I.S., along with your new mailing address (or other information). This will ensure that YAMAHA has an up-to-date registration record.
