All-New Omega 45, Technohull’s Flagship

1 March 2019 Dominique SALANDRE New Boats , News 0

Technohull just presented the all-new Omega 45. Omega 45 is the flagship of the brand , a performance luxury mega RIB that combines the concepts of versatility, performance, high quality details and finishes all in a single model.

Performance and High Efficiency

Since 2005, the Greek shipyard produces luxurious and efficient models. They are facts that ensured the production of models so versatile and safe that they can be used either for comfortable and elegant long-range cruises or as luxury tenders for super-yachts, thanks to the RIB’s smart and customizable design and lay-out.

Cutting-edge technology has been used in every stage of the creation of Omega 45. Characteristics such as CNC prototyping, ceramic-coated moulds, foam cored layers, multiaxial fibers, mean this boat makes strength one of its strong points.

DynaStream, the proven patented hull technology

Omega 45 is a clear example of the proven Technohull DynaStream patented hull technology, fully implemented by the shipyard. By evaluating the working envelope of each model and the demands of the range, the Greek shipyard has derived separate hull design constraints. Using state-of-the-art computer programs and hull structure algorithms, key hull design aspects have been confirmed. After several design loops, the hydrodynamic profile is streamlined. As a result, strake geometry, step number, step positioning and the variable dead-rise distribution along the hull’s surface have been optimized. The combination of the above has resulted in a boat that is perfectly balanced, efficient and extremely seaworthy, perfect for fast commuting, yet with a very smooth and safe ride, providing a high thrill factor both for the expert and newcomer.

Comfort on Board

The hinge-point of the Technohull Omega 45 design is the modern center console, sheltered by a T-top that protects the four wrap-around shockproof seats. The cockpit features a state-of-the-art electronic console supported by touchscreen smart central control. The design of the Omega 45 console allowed the shipyard’s team to create spacious interiors that include an enclosed bathroom – an aesthetic choice that will satisfy the most performance-oriented owners and their partners as well.

The forward area of the deck includes a spacious storage space, hidden under an extra-large sunbathing area, and a comfortable seat forward of the console. The Omega 45 cockpit’s layout is dedicated to convivial activities, with a U-shaped sofa that runs the entire width of the boat along the transom, served by a central table. Aft of the ergonomic seats, the owner can choose to have another sofa or a mobile kitchen.

Up to 4x400hp and 60+ mph!

Several propulsion options are available for the Omega 45: owners can choose a triple engine, with 300hp, 350hp or 400hp options. Lastly, the shipyard offers a “radical option”, i.e. the possibility of mounting 4x400hp engines that can deliver a top speed in excess of 90 miles per hour* and a cruising speed of 60+ mph!

The shipyard also offers options to owners who prefer an inboard diesel engine propulsion system, including sterndrives or high-power engines, coupled with surface drive systems. These characteristics make Omega 45 ideal for covering long distances without sacrificing comfort and pleasure.

Technohull’s New Flagship: The Omega 45

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: July 17, 2018

Technohull in Greece has unveiled its new flagship, the Omega 45. With an optional power package, the yacht is expected to achieve a top-end speed of 74 knots.

The center-console RIB has four “shockproof” seats beneath a T-top for protection from the sun. Inside the console is a head for days when the boat is far from her superyacht mothership.

Owners can choose triple outboard engines from 300 to 400 horsepower, or what the yard calls a “radical option” of quad 400-horsepower outboards for a top speed of about 74 knots and a cruising speed around 48 knots. Inboard diesels are also an option.

About the Omega 45’s hull design: It’s what Technohull calls its DynaStream, created with algorithms to position everything from steps to strakes.

Thanks to her ceramic-coated moulds and foam cored layers, Omega 45 slides gently on the water with a displacement of 5,200 kg.

Omega 45 is a clear example of the all-new DynaStream patented hull technology, fully implemented by the shipyard. The profile is therefore hydrodynamic and streamlined, hull lines, step positioning and the variable dead-rise distribution along the hull’s surface have been optimized.

Amidships, Omega 45 features an aerodynamic center console, sheltered by a T-Top that protects the four wrap-around  seats. In the stern, a C-shaped sofa runs the entire width of the boat along the transom, served by a central table. Aft of the ergonomic seats, the owner can choose to have an additional sofa for three or a mobile kitchen.

New Boat: Technohull Omega 45

Technohull omega 45.

The stylish, blazingly fast RIB can travel from Manhattan to Montauk on a summer afternoon faster than just about anything short of a helicopter.

prm-TechnohullOmega45

Marine professionals depend on RIBs in the line of duty for a number of reasons. RIBs are lightweight, burn less fuel and need less horsepower to go faster—but can still accommodate large powerplants. The inflatable collar makes them durable and less prone to damage when docking or in the event of a collision. It also acts like a shock absorber for a stable, comfortable ride.

I’ve spotted RIBs all over the Med, serving as capable, family-friendly dayboats or tenders among the superyacht crowd—and their presence and LOA is growing stateside. The luxuriously appointed Technohull Omega 45 should help things move along nicely.

And move it will. The Greek builder says their flagship 45 will blast across the sea at 78 knots when equipped with optional quad, 400-hp Mercury Verado Racing outboards. Even with her standard package of three Merc 400s she’ll see 70 knots. The yard also offers inboard diesel and surface drive combos in 350- and 400-hp options, a good choice to simplify fueling for those buyers who will use her in concert with a mothership.

When the Omega 45 premiered in Miami this year, I was among the first to board her post-press conference and stood amidships with my back toward the dock. I admired the subtle upwards rake of the black, tinted glass hardtop and how well the organized, carbon fiber dash contrasted with the teak decks and gunwale boards, the latter a nice touch for safe boarding. A quartet of shock-absorbing bolster seats in finely stitched leather ensured comfort and safety while at speed, with a galley just aft. If desired, a double bench can replace the galley; however, there’s already additional seating for eight guests both aft and at the foredeck.

To my surprise, I turned around minutes later to find nearly every seat occupied by journalists, but the vessel stood stock still in her quay. Credit goes to the stability provided by the collars combined with the 45’s vacuum-infused hull. She should be sure-footed at sea as well: Technohull claims their proprietary DynaStream hull technology was developed to optimize performance and comfort, with improved fuel economy, tight handling and lower planing speeds. Chines will divert spray from your crew when cruising at 48 knots.

Technohull presents flagship Omega 45 at Miami Yacht Show

Greek yard Technohull has presented its flagship Omega 45 at the Miami Yacht Show .

The 13.8 metre luxury performance RIB combines “versatility, performance and high-quality finishes in a single model,” the yard said, offering “enhanced manoeuvrability” and stability in extreme conditions.

The yacht has top speeds exceeding 78.2 knots and is equipped with DynaStream patented proven hull design technology. It makes “the ideal RIB for people who want to take the weekend off and not worry about the distance to cover,” the yard said.

Key features include a modern centre console, which is sheltered by a T-top protecting four shockproof seats. The spacious interior includes a bathroom, while storage space sits forward of the deck, hidden beneath a sunbathing area.

The cockpit, meanwhile, includes a U-shaped sofa and central table. Aft, the owner has the option to include another sofa or mobile kitchen.

A number of propulsion options are available, with the triple engine available with 300hp, 350hp or 400hp options.

The yard also offers a “radical option”, which includes mounting four 400hp engines for a cruising speed of 52.1 knots.

Abandoned sailboat found still afloat

' data-srcset=

On June 17, 2018, a voyaging couple, Jim and Joy Cary, were forced to abandon their Omega 45 cutter Kelaerin in the Pacific 180 miles off the the U.S. West Coast. Yesterday, however, the story took a new turn with an announcement by the Coast Guard that the sailboat had been found.

A combination of bad weather, bad luck and a ripped mainsail led the Carys to make the decision to leave the boat, on which they were just about to finish a 17-year circumnavigation. They were taken off by a U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. The Carys had sailed almost 70,000 miles on Kelaerin and had only 150 miles to go to finish their long circumnavigation. You can read an account of their travails here.

The Carys assumed that Kalaerin was gone forever, but on July 24, 2018, the Coast Guard Eleventh District announced in a press release that crew members of the USCG cutter Barracuda had found Kelaerin while on routine patrol approximately 440 miles south southeast from where it was abandoned.

From the press release: " Barracuda crew inspected the vessel's seaworthiness and took it in tow toward the coast, where a Coast Guard Station Fort Bragg 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew relieved the tow and moored the vessel at the B Dock in Fort Bragg, Monday morning. Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay watchstanders contacted the owners to notify them the vessel had been found.

"The vessel was not under power and was completely at the mercy of the sea," said Chief Warrant Officer Chris Ramp, the Sector Humboldt Bay command center chief. "The owners probably never thought they'd see it again. Thankfully,  Barracuda crew kept a vigilant eye on the water and spotted the vessel so they could bring it back to shore."

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

omega 45 sailboat

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

omega 45 sailboat

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

omega 45 sailboat

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

omega 45 sailboat

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

omega 45 sailboat

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

omega 45 sailboat

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

omega 45 sailboat

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

omega 45 sailboat

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

omega 45 sailboat

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Why Russia fears the emergence of Tajik terrorists

Analysis Why Russia fears the emergence of Tajik terrorists

A man in a white jumpsuit reclines in a chair within a glass cage as photographers gather outside.

It has emerged that the  four gunmen charged  in the murder of at least 139 concert-goers at Moscow's Crocus City Hall theatre  were all citizens  of the small post-Soviet nation of Tajikistan in Central Asia.

Does their nationality have anything to do with their alleged terrorism? Many Russians probably think so.

Tajikistan, a landlocked country of 10 million sandwiched between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and China, is the  most impoverished  of the former Soviet republics. Known for its corruption and political repression, it has chafed under the  iron-fisted rule  of President Emomali Rahmon since 1994.

There are estimated to be well over  3 million Tajiks  living in Russia, about one-third of the total Tajik population. Most of them hold the precarious status of " guest workers ," holding low-paying jobs in construction, produce markets or even cleaning public toilets.

While Russia's  declining population  has led to increasing reliance on foreign workers to fill such needs within its labour force, the attitude of Russians towards natives of Central Asia and  the Caucasus region  is generally negative.

It's similar to the American stereotype about Mexicans so infamously expressed by  Donald Trump  in 2015: "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."

Non-Slavs are systematically  discriminated against  in Russia, and since 2022 they have been  disproportionately conscripted  and sent to Ukraine to serve as cannon fodder at the front.

A Tajik migrant municipal worker carries Russian national and Moscow city flags in a street near Red Square in Moscow

Tajik exclusion

As I have described in a  recent book , few nations in history have seen their standing so dramatically reduced as the Tajiks have over the past 100 years.

For more than a millennium, the  Tajiks — Persian-speaking descendants of the ancient Sogdians who dominated the Silk Road  — were Central Asia's cultural elite.

Beginning with what's known as the  New Persian Renaissance of the 10th century  when their capital, Bukhara, came to rival Baghdad as a centre of Islamic learning and high culture, Tajiks were the principal scholars and bureaucrats of Central Asia's major cities right up to the time of the Russian Revolution.

The famous medieval polymath Avicenna was an ethnic Tajik, as were the hadith collector Bukhari, the Sufi poet Rumi, and many others.

But as the most significant purveyors of Central Asia's Islamic civilization, Tajiks were seen by the Bolsheviks as representing an obsolete legacy that socialism aimed to overcome.

Residents of Dosti, Tajikistan

The Tajiks were virtually excluded from the massive social and political restructuring imposed on Central Asia during the early years of the Soviet Union, with most of their historical territory, including the  fabled cities of Samarkand and Bukhara , being awarded to the Turkic-speaking Uzbeks who were seen as being more malleable.

Only as late as  1929 were the Tajiks given their own republic , consisting mostly of marginal, mountainous territory and deprived of any major urban centres.

An impoverished region

Throughout the 20th century, the  Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic was the most impoverished and underdeveloped  region of the former Soviet Union, and it has retained that  unfortunate status  since independence in 1991.

From 1992-1997, the country was plunged into a devastating civil war that destroyed what infrastructure remained from the Soviet period. Since that time, Rahmon has used the threat of  renewed civil conflict  to vindicate his absolute rule.

The spectre of  radical Islam  emanating from neighbouring Afghanistan —  where the Tajik population considerably outnumbers that of Tajikistan  — has provided additional justification for Rahmon's repressive policies.

In today's Tajikistan even those with a university education find it almost  impossible to earn a salary  that would enable them to build a normal family life.

A Tajikistan family bakes bread in their home in the village of Dakhana Kiik.

Disempowered and humiliated by the system, they are easy prey for radical Islamic preachers who give them a sense of value and purpose.

The added backdrop of financial desperation makes for an explosive cocktail: one of the suspects in the recent Moscow attacks reportedly told his Russian interrogators that he  was promised a cash reward of half a million Russian rubles (about US$5,300) to carry out his alleged atrocities. .

Terrorism as desperation?

Normal, sane human beings everywhere are horrified by terrorist acts regardless of how they are justified by their perpetrators, and the long-suffering people of Tajikistan are no exception.

A man is pictured from the left side profile, his face bruised. On the right side of his head a bandage.

But unfortunately, the conditions under which a small number of extremists can perceive the psychopathic murder of innocent civilians for cash or ideology as an attractive option show no signs of abating.

Russia's laughable attempt to somehow link the Moscow attacks  to Ukraine  is a clumsy diversion from the consequences of its relations with Central Asia.
