Where is Port City in Sri Lanka?

Port City is built on reclaimed land near Galle Face Green, a prominent Colombo promenade in the Colombo city. It reaches the Indian Ocean and is conveniently located near Colombo’s Central Business District. The project entails recovering land from the sea and developing a new area. This artificial property will be used for commercial, residential, and recreational purposes. Because of its proximity to the seaside, the Port City will include beach, recreational areas, waterfront attractions, and entertainment venues that will appeal to locals and tourists.

How to Visit Port City Colombo?

Port City Colombo is positioned close to Galle Face Green, and it has two primary entrances.

1. Port City Entrance 1 / Gate 1: Situated across from the Presidential Secretariat.

Only pedestrian pathways are permitted here; vehicles cannot enter. This entrance is used to access the Marina Promenade. The Port City open time is from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM for Port City entrance 1.

2. Port City Entrance 2 / Gate 2: located across from the parking lot of the Kingsbury Hotel.

This entrance allows access for four-wheel vehicles only, and motorbikes and tuk-tuks are not allowed. We must make a reservation using the Port City Mobile app prior to our arrival. Entrance 2 of the Port City is open from 7:30 AM to 8:45 PM .

01. Port City Public Area / Artificial Beach

Port City’s public spaces are freely accessible to all, without any entrance fees . But prior to arrival, you have to make the reservation through the mobile app . This will issue a QR code , which will be scanned at the entrance. There are several restaurants inside the Port City public area.

02. ATV 4x4 Experience

Experience the excitement offered by Colombo Dunes ATV Adventure Centre. There are three cool tracks to explore the sandy hills. If you’re new to this, Track A is perfect for beginners. 09. The Port City Marina Promenade

The Port City Colombo Marina Promenade is the first major attraction in the megaproject that people can enjoy. This lovely place has 500 meters of beautifully designed walkway. It’s just one of the many places that will be open for everyone in Port City Colombo . They’ve set aside a big space of 91 hectares for the public. This includes 53 acres of green spaces, two kilometers of beach, and 14 acres for a big park. There are paths for walking, waterways, and ways to connect all the parks. The Marina Promenade is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and you can get in from a special entrance across from the Presidential Secretariat.

• There is no entrance fee to the Port City public area.
• Only four-wheel vehicles are allowed to access the Gate 2 entrance. Two-wheel or three-wheel vehicles are not allowed at the entrance.
• Prior to the visit, you must make a reservation to visit the public area or desired services, which will generate a QR code. At the main entrance, it will be scanned by the staff.
• Payment should be made for any services that you selected to the service providers, not to the main entrance or any other staff.
• In the public area, you can enjoy the beach at no cost, but for the beach activities, you have to pay the charge.
• Always adhere to the rules and regulations.
• When traveling, avoid scammers who are trying to pick you up and drop you off at a high cost.
• You can hail an Uber or PickMe four-wheel vehicle to pick up and drop you off without any hesitation.

Pierre Pringiers, Chairman of the Sail Lanka Yachting Group which manages the Port City Colombo Marina said, “The 145’ Kalizma – built in 1906 by GL Watson in Scotland – arrived from the Maldives on Sunday, marking a milestone in the development of Colombo as a Superyacht destination.

To see this historic Superyacht berthed at the marina is the fulfilment of a dream for me, and is a fitting tribute to our staff who have efficiently handled the logistics and administrative details. I also want to express my sincere thanks to the officials of the Port City Colombo and the Customs, Immigration, and all the agencies involved. I’m hoping that the arrival of Kalizma will augur well for the success of visiting Superyachts and the opening up of Sri Lanka for cruising and yacht charters – one of the new pillars of the tourism industry.”

MY Kalizma has served in both world wars as part of the British Royal Navy. It was in 1967 that two of Hollywood’s most famous actors, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor chartered the yacht for a cruise on the Mediterranean. They fell in love with the yacht and Burton bought it and gifted it to Taylor. They named the yacht Kalizma, after their three daughters, Kate, Liza and Maria.

Aashim Mongia, Managing Director of West Coast Marine Yacht Services in India who manage the yacht said, “MY Kalizma has been cruising the Indian Ocean region through the last season. The opening of the Port City Colombo Marina is a boon for Superyachts that visit the region, and hopefully we will see more Superyachts coming into the Indian Ocean Region for nautical tourism. We are thankful to the Sri Lankan authorities, the Sail Lanka Yachting Group and the management of Port City Colombo, for their assistance in making MY Kalizma’s visit a success. With this first visit we are hoping to bring more yachts to Sri Lanka to explore the untapped potential that the island nation has to offer.”

The Port City Colombo Marina is expected to be one of the region’s most modern and largest international yacht marinas. When it is fully operational, it is expected to have the facility to anchor 200 yachts and become one of the largest such venues in the region. It is also expected to have a mini yacht repair facility, duty-free terminal, customs and facilities for several other maritime related businesses.

Sail Lanka Yachting Group, founded in 2014 by Mr. Pierre Pringiers, operates a fleet of 10 luxury catamarans around the island (www.sail-lanka-charter.com) and has been designing manufacturing boats and developing marine infrastructure and boats for export since 2008. Sail Lanka Yachting Group is also now managing the Port City Colombo Marina operations.

The vision of SLYG is to develop Sri Lanka as one of the main hubs for boat and yacht building, ownership, and chartering in South and South-East Asia and make Sri Lanka a key world-class destination for Experiential Tourism and Marine Tourism.

If you are coming from the North on the ICW, enter the River via Snow's Cut. We are located approximately 12 miles north of where Snow's Cut meets the river. Follow the Cape Fear River north. Along the way you will pass the NC State Port Facility, the USS North Carolina and the scenic downtown Wilmington riverfront. You will pass under one bridge, the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. Colombo has seen rapid development in many avenues over the years. One such development that has caught the attention of many Colombo folk and foreigners alike is the Port City project that has partially opened up for activities to the public. What kind of activity you ask? Well, here are 6 that you will love!

One of the first activities to be opened to the public, luxury yachting at the Colombo Port City Marina has quickly become the go-to destination for many people to spend the weekend with family and friends. 

The Galle Face Green accentuated by the backdrop of the new development projects gives a sense of satisfaction and appreciation to how progressive the city has become and certainly provides a different take on the bustling city. Couple that with the company of your friends and family, and you have got yourself the perfect weekend right here in Colombo.

Want to let your inner Happy Gilmore out? Well, the Colombo Golf Academy (CGA) has officially kickstarted operations in the Colombo Port City. The golf range is just past the Colombo Port City Marina, facing the Indian Ocean, making it one of the more unique ranges on the island.

Having a swing of the club is ideal if you go with a few friends! It doesn’t matter if you are an absolute beginner or a PGA pro, the range is all about giving you a unique experience while also giving you a taste of the gentleman’s game.

Entertainment in the Port City is one of the newer additions and has quickly gained notoriety with top international DJs and musicians. Of course, this has still not caught on since it was opened for entertainment events a few months back.

However, the most recent NYE 2021 celebrations proved to be a great success, thus making way for greater things to come. Who knows, maybe we might see Coldplay performing at the venue before they retire!

4.Leisure and Recreation

While not yet fully opened to the public, we anticipate that a few of the park areas within the Colombo Port City will be opened somewhere in the middle of this year. These parks are supposedly being designed to bring about some form of tranquillity amid all the commercial activity in Colombo City. In other words, a perfect place to escape the rat race of the city limits during the evening hours of the day.

The parks also work as a great place for fitness activity as well. The wide walking/running tracks and the open spaces are perfect for solo and group fitness activities. So, lacing up a pair of shoes and burning calories while admiring the Indian Ocean on one side and the bustle of Colombo city is now a possibility.

Similarly, the Colombo Port City Beach is also anticipated to open up this year, which will also include several water sports. From paddleboarding to fishing, you have quite a list to choose from. 

With water sports also comes several places for relaxation and recreation too, making it suitable for everyone.

6. ATV track

The Colombo Dunes ATV track consists of three 2-kilometre racetracks running over an area of about 05 acres in Port City. Uniquely, the adventure is to drive the ATVs through sand dunes and experience a one-of-a-kind beach ride on Sri Lanka’s only artificial beach.

Of course, a lot of the elements are yet to be revealed, but from what is already opened to the public, the Colombo Port City looks to be a place of great things to come!
