A lot of fun. AJ and the other gentleman were very friendly and accommodating. The jet ski was good and we had no problems. It was very easy to book and get started on the jet ski. There’s good parking at the Marina where we didn’t have to pay extra.

I hosted my birthday party with a few friends and I would definitely recommend you rent with Mr Garcia! He showed us a wonderful time as the host and Captain! The views were amazing, the boat was clean and very nice just like the pictures! Everything I expected and more he even made sure we were entertained! FIVE STARS! Will be renting again very soon.

Took the Bayliner 180 out for a relaxing cruise on the Potomac for a couple of hours and really enjoyed it! The boat was clean, well maintained, and had a nice GPS navigation with depth finder and speedometer. We will definitely go again soon. Orlando was friendly, helpful and responsive. Highly recommended!

Aamir was a great host and Buster T was the perfect boat for cruising around the Potomac. The boat was spacious, comfortable and really fun! Aamir was terrific captain and knew all the best spots to take the boat. He was great with kids and even let them drive the boat with supervision. Thank you Aamir!

And with the summer heat hitting the region hard this summer, there’s no better way to find relief than out on the water. Here are some private and public marinas as well as regional and county parks where you can row, row, row your boat (or stand-up paddleboard).

Belle Haven Marina

Located just south of Old Town along the George Washington Memorial Parkway is this waterfront spot owned by the National Park Service and operated by Belle Haven Marina. You can rent canoes, single and double kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, Sunfish, Flying Scots, and jon boats for a minimum of two hours to explore wildlife around the adjacent Dyke Marsh. With the Potomac River lapping at our city’s shores, Alexandrians have plenty of opportunities to enjoy summertime fun on the water, whether it’s sailing, kayaking, rowing, wind-surfing or canoeing. 

One of the landmark water sports familiar to many Alexandria families is the Washington Sailing Marina Sailing School. Amy Zang purchased the school in Alexandria in 1994, when she was 27 years old. More than 30 years later, the business is still going strong. 

The New York native and now-Alexandria resident moved to the area for a teaching job in Prince George’s County, Md., across the river from Alexandria. 

She combined her love of teaching with sailing, which she picked up during sleepaway camp summers in Massachusetts. 

“When I went away to sleepaway camp in Massachusetts, it became my thing,” she said. “I loved it.” 

At the marina, which sits on National Park Service property, she owns 70 boats that are used for the sailing school and she hires all of the staff, which numbers about 40 during the summers. 

“I offer a service, I don’t have an office,” she said, noting that her office is a picnic table under a tree at the park. “That’s my office. I come with the whole package. I have my own insurance, my own boats. I’ve had a really good relationship with the National Park Service.” 

The school offers a variety of boats to choose from for rent and for lessons, including one and two-person dinghies (also known as a Sunfish); a Flying Scot that holds four people; catamarans and two-person dinghies that are racing boats, as well as keel boats and wind surfers. 

Lessons are available for all age groups. “We teach adults ages 16 and older on weekends and evenings — we’re open to everybody,” Zang said, noting that many adults who take lessons are those who went to camp as a kid and now want to learn at a recreational level. 

The school also offers team-building activities for companies and supervised sailing, after people take lessons, where instructors are out in safety boats helping those who are renting boats. 

“We want to make sure they’re in good shape,” she said.

New this year at the school is a program that offers free sailing for underserved youth, thanks to the school being named one of six Sailing Centers around the country, with donations for the program made by the U.S. Sailing Association, the governing body for the sport. 

“Sailing still has that ‘white rich man’s sport’ aura,” Zang said. “I was selected to do the program in the spring, summer and fall at no-cost to designated underserved youth between ages 10-14.” The school is working with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority to identify students for the program. 

“The Potomac River is in their backyard,” she said. “Sailing has so many benefits, so many life skills that you learn.” 

The school will open the first weekend in May starting with weekend classes and then weeknight classes. Summer camp will begin in June and continue for 11 weeks of one-week sessions. 

“We start with kids who have never sailed before all the way up through advanced sailing,“ she said. 

Last year, the camp did not close down during the pandemic. “We were fortunate that we were able to operate,“ Zang said. “We had zero COVID cases.“ 

“I feel really, really lucky,“ she said. “Last year, we were putting modifications in place to be open; luckily the modifications didn’t change our program.“ 

The camp teaches more than 100 children each week during summer camp. “It’s amazing,“ Zang said. “We’re already three-quarters full.“ Some of the staffers who teach sailing are former campers she’s known since they were 9 years old. “They stay with us through college.“ 

What is the future of the sailing school? “My hope is that everything just continues on,“ Zang said. “We don’t have a whole lot of room for getting bigger, but we continue to build on programs in the spring and fall. I’m there until I can’t be there anymore. I really do love it, it’s been really good for me in so many ways."

The City Marina offers docking for pleasure boats and commercial vessels. For boaters who wish to stay overnight, restroom and shower facilities are available. One 30-amp electrical connection and water hose bib (in season) are available for each boat slip. Alexandria is a dog-friendly city. There is a public access dog park within easy walking distance of the marina. Please note: Dogs must be on a leash and under the owner's control at all times. Owner must clean up after dogs.

Tour & Charter Boats

Pleasure boats requesting short-term docking space are encouraged to contact the Dock Master on VHF channel 16. Short-term docking space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

City Marina Rules & Regulations

• Short-Term Docking (up to 4-hour stay): $20 (available on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations accepted).
• Each boat slip has one 30-amp electrical connection and water hose bib available.
• T-Head docking is available for boats over 40 feet in length.
• Each T-Head has 50-amp electric available. The North T-Head has one 100-amp electric connection available.
• Overnight visiting pleasure boats must check out and depart the City Marina by noon.

• Limited docking is available. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
• The east end of the Torpedo Factory South Pier can accommodate vessels up to 80 feet long and offers one 50-amp service. Water is available in season.
• The east end of the Founder's Park North Pier can accommodate vessels up to 220 feet long. Please call for information regarding electric availability. Water is available in season.
• Reservations are required for charter, cruise, business, and commercial vessel docking.

Boat Slip Wait List Information

The City Marina has year-round leased berths for vessels up to 40 feet long. At present, leased berths are full; however, a waitlist has been established. If you would like to place your name on the Boat Slip Wait List, please complete and mail the online application.

Sightseeing Boat Tours & Charters 

Sightseeing, Charters, and Water Taxi service is available at the City Marina. Water Taxi Sightseeing cruises include Washington's monuments and the Mount Vernon Estate. Water Taxi service is available to Georgetown, Mount Vernon, and the National Harbor and Gaylord National Convention Center. For additional Information, visit  City Cruises  or call 800.459.8105.

Franchise ordinance.

Busker Information Card

Street performances have been a popular attraction in Old Town Alexandria for hundreds of years and continue to delight residents and visitors from all over the world. To ensure an enjoyable and peaceful experience for residents, businesses, and visitors, the Alexandria City Code includes specific regulations on the generation of sound (referred to in the law as “noise” regardless of the type).
