10 Best Small Sailboats (Under 20 Feet)

Best Small Sailboats Under 20 Feet | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

Compact, easy to trailer, simple to rig, easy to maintain and manage, and affordable, the best small boats all have one thing in common: they offer loads of fun while out there on the water.

So whether you're on a budget or just looking for something that can offer ultimate daytime rides without compromising on safety, aesthetic sensibilities, alternate propulsion, and speed, the best small sailboats under 20 feet should be the only way to go.

Let's be brutally honest here; not everyone needs a 30-foot sailboat to go sailing. They come with lots of features such as electronics, entertainment, refrigeration, bunks, a galley, and even a head. But do you really need all these features to go sailing? We don't think so.

All you need to go sailing is a hull, a mast, rudder, and, of course, a sail. And whether you refer to them as daysailers, trailerable sailboats , a weekender sailboat, or pocket cruisers, there's no better way to enjoy the thrills of coastal sailing than on small sailboats.

There are a wide range of small boats measuring less than 20 feet available in the market. These are hot products in the market given that they offer immense thrills out on the sea without the commitment required to cruise on a 30-footer. A small sailboat will not only give you the feel of every breeze but will also give you the chance to instantly sense every change in trim.

In this article, we'll highlight 10 best small sailboats under 20 feet . Most models in this list are time-tested, easy to rig, simple to sail, extremely fun, and perfect either for solo sailing or for sailing with friends and family. So if you've been looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats , you've come to the right place.

So without further ado, let's roll on.

Table of contents

{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-15"}}

The Marlow-Hunter 15 is not only easy to own since it's one of the most affordable small sailboats but also lots of fun to sail. This is a safe and versatile sailboat for everyone. Whether you're sailing with your family or as a greenhorn, you'll love the Hunter 15 thanks to its raised boom, high freeboard, and sturdy FRP construction.

With high sides, a comfortable wide beam, a contoured self-bailing cockpit, and fiberglass construction, the Hunter 15 is certainly designed with the novice sailor in mind. This is why you can do a lot with this boat without falling out, breaking it, or capsizing. Its contoured self-baiting cockpit will enable you to find a fast exit while its wide beam will keep it steady and stable no matter what jibes or weight shifts happen along the way.

This is a small sailboat that can hold up to four people. It's designed to give you a confident feeling and peace of mind even when sailing with kids. It's easy to trailer, easy to rig, and easy to launch. With a price tag of about $10k, the Hunter 15 is a fun, affordable, and versatile boat that is perfect for both seasoned sailors and novices. It's a low-maintenance sailboat that can be great for teaching kids a thing or two about sailing.

Catalina 16.5

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-16-5"}}

Catalina Yachts are synonymous with bigger boats but they have some great and smaller boats too such as Catalina 16.5. This is one of the best small sailboats that are ideal for family outings given that it has a big and roomy cockpit, as well as a large storage locker. Designed with a hand-laminated fiberglass sloop, the Catalina 16.5 is versatile and is available in two designs: the centerboard model and the keel model.

The centerboard model is designed with a powerful sailplane that remains balanced as a result of the fiberglass centerboard, the stable hull form, and the rudder. It also comes with a tiller extension, adjustable hiking straps, and adjustable overhaul. It's important to note that these are standard equipment in the two models.

As far as the keel model is concerned, this is designed with a high aspect keel as the cast lead and is attached with stainless steel keel bolts, which makes this model perfect for mooring or docking whenever it's not in use. In essence, the centerboard model is perfect if you'll store it in a trailer while the keel model can remain at the dock.

All in all, the Catalina 16.5 is one of the best small sailboats that you can get your hands on for as low as $10,000. This is certainly a great example of exactly what a daysailer should be.

{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}

There's no list of small, trailerable, and fun sailboats that can be complete without the inclusion of the classic Hobie 16. This is a durable design that has been around and diligently graced various waters across the globe since its debut way back in 1969 in Southern California. In addition to being durable, the Hobie 16 is trailerable, great for speed, weighs only 320 pounds, great for four people, and more importantly, offers absolute fun.

With a remarkable figure of over 100,000 launched since its debut, it's easy to see that the Hobie 16 is highly popular. Part of this popularity comes from its asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam sandwiched hulls that include kick-up rudders. This is a great feature that allows it to sail up to the beach.

For about $12,000, the Hobie 16 will provide you with endless fun throughout the summer. It's equipped with a spinnaker, trailer, and douse kit. This is a high-speed sailboat that has a large trampoline to offer lots of space not just for your feet but also to hand off the double trapezes.

Montgomery 17

{{boat-info="/boats/montgomery-17"}}

Popularly known as the M-17, The Montgomery 17 was designed by Lyle C. Hess in conjunction with Jerry Montgomery in Ontario, California for Montgomery Boats. Designed either with keel or centerboard models, the M-17 is more stable than most boats of her size. This boat is small enough to be trailered but also capable of doing moderate offshore passages.

This small sailboat is designed with a masthead and toe rail that can fit most foresails. It also has enough space for two thanks to its cuddly cabin, which offers a sitting headroom, a portable toilet, a pair of bunks, a DC power, and optional shore, and a proper amount of storage. That's not all; you can easily raise the deck-stepped mast using a four-part tackle.

In terms of performance, the M-17 is one of the giant-killers out there. This is a small sailboat that will excel in the extremes and make its way past larger boats such as the Catalina 22. It glides along beautifully and is a dog in light air, though it won't sail against a 25-knot wind, which can be frustrating. Other than that, the Montgomery 17 is a great small sailboat that can be yours for about $14,000.

Norseboat 17.5

{{boat-info="/boats/norseboat-17-5"}}

As a versatile daysailer, Norseboat 17.5 follows a simple concept of seaworthiness and high-performance. This small sailboat perfectly combines both contemporary construction and traditional aesthetics. Imagine a sailboat that calls itself the "Swiss Army Knife of Boats!" Well, this is a boat that can sail and row equally well.

Whether you're stepping down from a larger cruiser or stepping up from a sea kayak, the unique Norseboat 17.5 is balanced, attractive, and salty. It has curvaceous wishbone gaff, it is saucy, and has a stubby bow-sprit that makes it attractive to the eyes. In addition to her beauty, the Norseboat 17.5 offers an energy-pinching challenge, is self-sufficient, and offers more than what you're used to.

This is a small, lightweight, low-maintenance sailboat that offers a ticket to both sailing and rowing adventures all at the same time. At about 400 pounds, it's very portable and highly convenient. Its mainsails may look small but you'll be surprised at how the boat is responsive to it. With a $12,500 price tag, this is a good small sailboat that offers you the versatility to either row or sail.

{{boat-info="/boats/sage-marine-sage-17"}}

If you've been looking for a pocket cruiser that inspires confidence, especially in shoal water, look no further than the Sage 17. Designed by Jerry Montgomery in 2009, the Sage 17 is stable and should heel to 10 degrees while stiffening up. And because you want to feel secure while sailing, stability is an integral feature of the Sage 17.

This is a sailboat that will remain solid and stable no matter which part of the boat you stand on. Its cabin roof and the balsa-cored carbon-fiber deck are so strong that the mast doesn't require any form of compression post. The self-draining cockpit is long enough and capable of sleeping at 6 feet 6 inches.

The Sage 17 may be expensive at $25k but is a true sea warrior that's worth look at. This is a boat that will not only serve you right but will also turn heads at the marina.

{{boat-info="/boats/laserperformance-laser-sb3"}}

Having been chosen as the overall boat of the year for 2008 by the Sailing World Magazine, the Laser SB3 is one of the coolest boats you'll ever encounter. When sailing upwind, this boat will lock into the groove while its absolute simplicity is legendary. In terms of downwind sailing, having this boat will be a dream come true while it remains incredibly stable even at extraordinary speed.

Since its debut in 2004, the Laser SB3 has surged in terms of popularity thanks to the fact that it's designed to put all the controls at your fingertips. In addition to a lightweight mast, its T- bulb keel can be hauled and launched painlessly. For about $18,000, the Laser SB3 ushers you into the world of sports sailing and what it feels to own and use a sports boat.

{{boat-info="/boats/fareast-18"}}

As a manufacturer, Fareast is a Chinese boat manufacturer that has been around for less than two decades. But even with that, the Fareast 18 remains a very capable cruiser-racer that will take your sailing to the next level. In addition to its good looks, this boat comes with a retractable keel with ballast bulb, a powerful rig, and an enclosed cabin.

Its narrow design with a closed stern may be rare in sailboats of this size, but that's not a problem for the Fareast 18. This design not only emphasizes speed but also makes it a lot easier to maintain this boat. Perfect for about 6 people, this boat punches above its weight. It's, however, designed to be rigged and launched by one person.

This is a relatively affordable boat. It's agile, safe, well-thought-out, well built, and very sporty.

{{boat-info="/boats/chuck-paine-paine-14"}}

If you're in the market looking for a small sailboat that offers contemporary performance with classic beauty, the Paine 14 should be your ideal option. Named after its famous designer, Chuck Paine, this boat is intentionally designed after the classic Herreshoff 12.5 both in terms of dimensions and features.

This is a lightweight design that brings forth modern fin keel and spade rudder, which makes it agile, stable, and faster. The Paine 14 is built using cold-molded wood or west epoxy. It has varnished gunnels and transoms to give it an old-time charm. To make it somehow modern, this boat is designed with a carbon mast and a modern way to attach sails so that it's ready to sail in minutes.

You can rest easy knowing that the Paine 14 will not only serve you well but will turn heads while out there.

{{boat-info="/boats/wd-schock-lido-14"}}

Many sailors will attest that their first sailing outing was in a Lido 14. This is a classic sailboat that has been around for over four decades and still proves to be a perfect match to modern small boats, especially for those still learning the ropes of sailing.

With seating for six people, the Lido 14 can be perfect for solo sailing , single-handed sailing, or if you're planning for shorthanded sailing. While new Lido 14 boats are no longer available, go for a functional used Lido 14 and you'll never regret this decision. It will serve you well and your kids will probably fall in love with sailing if Lido 14 becomes their main vessel during weekends or long summer holidays.

Bottom Line

There you have it; these are some of the best small sailboats you can go for. While there are endless small sailboats in the market, the above-described sailboat will serve you right and make you enjoy the wind.

Choose the perfect sailboat, invest in it, and go out there and have some good fun!

Wauquiez - PILOT SALOON 48 (NEW) | 7 people (14.7m)

From $312 per day, why should i rent a sailing boat.

A sailing boat is an ideal way to discover new gems on land while cruising on the sea and allowing the wind to carry you. Sailing boats are safe and marvelous boats, which you can use for relaxation, or also for going on an adventure and experiencing the thrill of sailing on the waves.

Spend time with friends or relax with family. Renting a sailing boat can be the best way to make the most of your holiday! Look forward to sunbathing aboard your boat and enjoying a drink or two in the sun. If you’re ever seeking shade then don’t forget you can take a break and relax in your cool cabin below deck.

How much does a sailing boat rental cost?

A sailboat rental has different price ranges depending on the number of cabins, the length, season, the year the boat was built, if it is chartered with or without a skipper, etc. You can rent a sailboat for a day starting from $250 during low season. Bigger sailing yacht rentals with 6 cabins can cost from $11,000 per week. Rent a sailboat for a week during low season for $1,000 per week. Depending on the owner’s listing, there may be different included or additional costs so make sure you read all of the additional costs and options.

Additional options such as air conditioning, power generator, and water toys raise the price. One last thing to take into account is whether or not you will be sleeping on board and if so, how many people will want a cabin or are okay with sleeping in other living spaces? This decision can greatly influence the price.

Do I need a boat license to rent a sailing boat?

A sailboat charter may require a boating license depending on the legislation of the location, where you are going to sail and the boat owner’s listing. Some owners choose to not have their sailing boat for rent available without a license due to risks of damage. For example, in Spain, a permit is only required for those up to 6 meters in length. Meaning you can sail your boat rental in  Barcelona  without worrying about a permit so long as the boat meets regulations.

Don’t have a boating license? Then you should charter a sailboat with a skipper! A professional sailor will help you set sail and make your sailing holidays unforgettable. Your luxury sailing experience is waiting for you! These special offers allow you to learn from the skipper in your own personal sailing school.

What are the best destinations to rent a sailing boat?

Among the possible sailing boat charter destinations,  Cabo San Lucas  is definitely worth mentioning, as well as  the Bahamas and all of its many islands. Other places to visit are the Spanish Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza , Mexico , Italy,  and  Caribbean  destinations, such as  Puerto Rico . The best time of year to sail will depend on your destination and the winds in that area. Places in Europe usually have the best sailing conditions in the summer. Don't miss out on our favorite European spots,  Valencia ,  Corfu ,  Cinque Terre , and  Split . If you are planning to go to places in the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America, these are excellent destinations all year round!

With a sailing boat, you can sail between beaches with spectacular scenery and swim in clear turquoise waters, all whilst making the most of the opportunity to captain your very own boat (if you have the required license). Otherwise, a skipper will be available to help you discover new places and make the experience that extra bit special. From your sailboat, you can dive, snorkel, scuba dive, or use a surfboard to discover the most hidden spots! If you’re feeling extra adventurous then why not test the canoe out?!

What should I consider when renting a sailing boat?

Some things that you should consider when renting a sailing boat:

  • Dates of travel
  • Destination
  • Additional charges

The first things to consider when renting a sailing boat are the capacity you will need, the dates of travel, and the destination you want to start your sailing experience in. The capacity is especially important if you are choosing to stay on the boat. The capacity will also depend on if you decide to hire a crew and a skipper. A skipper may be mandatory for your sailing yacht charter if you do not have a valid nautical license. Make sure you count the correct number of people including crew!

There are also additional charges depending on if you want to add certain features for the trip. You may also choose to bring your pet on board! If you choose this option then you will most likely need to pay an extra price per rental.

What is included in a sailing boat charter and what additional expenses can I expect?

Each sailing boat charter has different additional and included costs, so if you are not sure of what costs are included make sure to ask the boat owner of your rental. Included costs can include mooring in the home port, sometimes skippers may be also included.

You can expect different additional expenses depending on the boat owner’s listing. The skipper may be a mandatory cost and included or can be optional and at an additional cost. Skippers normally range from $180 per day. Items such as extra cleaning, pets on board, early boarding, water sports equipment such as paddle surf, snorkeling gear, and more.

How can I rent a sailboat?

Our website offers a wide range of sailing boats, and you can find the one that suits you best by using our filters. For example, you can choose the size of your boat, the number of people that will be with you, the dates of your trip, whether you require a skipper, and much more! Don't forget to check the time and available dates of each sailing boat and don't hesitate to contact the owner if you have any doubts. Prices range from $1,000 per week in low season, and around $10,000 per week in high season for sailing boats required for more people and with more cabins.

What are the most popular brands for sailing boat rentals?

The most popular brands for sailing boat charters are Bavaria and Jeanneau.

How much does it cost to rent a sailboat for a day?

The cost of a sailing boat charter for a day depends on the destination, the capacity, boat features, season and lastly the boat owner’s listing. For example a sailing boat charter in Barcelona costs around $200/day with 6 places in low season and the boat is 6-8m in length.

How much does it cost to rent a sailboat for a week?

A sailboat rental for a week depends on the destination, capacity of the boat, boat features, season, and the boat owner’s listing. For example, a sailing boat rental in Barcelona costs starting from $2,500/week in low season. The boat listing has a capacity of 10 people and is 40ft in length. A sailing rental in Miami instead can cost from $1,600/week with the boat having a capacity of 6 people and a length of 41ft.

What is included in a sailboat charter and what additional expenses can I expect?

Usually, there is a base price for the charter period and a flat rate for the additional mandatory costs. Pay particular attention here to decide if you want to include only the final cleaning or also add bedding, towels, and an engine for the auxiliary boat. Other costs include mooring fees, of course, which can vary greatly depending on the size of the ship, the port, and the country. For gas and fresh water, you can expect to pay between $150 and $300 per week.

Do you need a license for a sailing boat rental?

If you want to charter a sailboat without a skipper, most countries require a navigation license. In France and the Caribbean, however, you can charter a sailboat without one. The decisive factor in such cases is the "past history sailing experience" of those who wish to charter the sailboat, which is a sheet that details the entire navigational experience of the interested party.

Where to charter a sailboat?

Spain and Italy offer many beautiful sailing spots. Croatia is an ideal place for beginners. For experienced sailors, we recommend chartering a sailboat in Martinique, Seychelles, Greece, or in the Canary Islands. Choose your favorite destination and we will send you an offer!

Can I move to different places with my sailing boat charter?

Yes. A sailboat charter is an excellent and affordable way to spend a holiday at sea discovering different places. You will feel at ease on board and can anchor in quiet bays or explore a new beach or cove every day. If you rent for more than one day you should know that weekly rentals nearly always start on Saturday afternoon and require you to return to the port of origin the following Friday afternoon. The last night is usually spent on board since check-out will take place on Saturday morning around 9 am.

Are you ready for an exciting adventure, feeling the waves rolling, the sun on your face and the wind on your skin? If you are an intrepid traveller looking for thrills and new experiences, a sailboat charter is the best choice for your holiday, whatever the destination. For an authentic sailing experience, you can’t go wrong with a sailboat, an ideal vessel for true sailing enthusiasts and for those seeking an exciting experience on the water.

Driven by the power of the wind, a sailboat needs some basic knowledge to sail well: local weather conditions, wind, tide, pressure, cables, knots, and much more. In fact, some countries only allow sailboats to be sailed on presentation of a nautical licence or a specific seaman's licence, to ensure even safer sailing.

Click&Boat offers high-quality sailing yachts in more than 50 countries around the world. Whether it's a trip along the Costa Brava, a trip around the bays of the Balearic Islands, or even sailing along the Vigo estuary, everything is possible on board a sailing yacht! All you have to do is access the Click&Boat platform, choose your destination and the ideal sailboat for your excursion and get on board to discover some of the most exciting places in the world in complete freedom.

How much does it cost to rent a sailboat?

Contrary to popular belief, chartering a sailboat doesn't have to be expensive. For this reason, Click&Boat offers you a huge fleet of private sailboat charters that meet all wishes and travel needs: various sizes, number of cabins, guests, power and shipyards are present on the platform. Not to mention that Click&Boat sailboats are offered by owners from all over the world, so whatever your travel destination, it can include a sailing trip.

Starting prices for a sailboat charter vary widely but can start at around €300 per day for a simpler, smaller boat. The total cost will increase as you select larger yachts or yachts that offer more space. The average cost for 8 people is about €388 / day and €2,565 / week.

Other factors, such as the time of year, additional services, or the choice to hire the services of a professional skipper, can also influence the final price of your sailboat charter. Keep in mind that all budgets and travel plans can be combined with a daily sailboat rental at Click&Boat! Are you coming on board?

Why rent a sailboat?

If you are looking for new adventures on your next holiday, you can’t go wrong with a private sailboat charter. Sailing is a unique way to experience the sea and is perfect for family holidays or trips with friends. Whether you choose one with or without a skipper, you will learn the basics of sailing during your trip and you will have a traditional sailing experience characterised by the thrill of the waves, the shifting winds and the hoisting of the sail.Chartering a sailboat with Click&Boat allows you to fully customise your itinerary and activities and grants you the freedom to access all areas of a destination at your own pace. For example, if you’re in Menorca you can choose between enjoying a relaxing day at Cala de Macarella, an adventurous crossing to Mallorca or a relaxing getaway in search of diving spots.

Best of all, you can come and go as you please, avoid the crowds and enjoy every corner of your own boat's deck.

What are the best places to sail?

The options for your sailing cruise at sea are endless. With Click&Boat you can visit the most popular destinations. Here are some of our top ideas:

  • Chartering a sailboat in Italy is a great option for your next sailing holiday. Visit Genoa and the main coastal towns of Liguria, cruise the Aeolian Islands from the northern coast of Sicily, marvel at the beauty of the Corallo Riviera or perhaps venture out on one of Italy's beautiful lakes, such as Garda.
  • Spain is also one of the best places to enjoy a boat trip. The Balearic Islands are a must-see with their turquoise blue waters and beautiful hidden coves. The islands comprise Ibiza , Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera. You’ll also find paradisical beaches in Barcelona, the Valencian region and in Andalusia.
  • The Algarve in Portugal offers a delightful mix of a Mediterranean climate and Atlantic waves, ideal for combining beautiful scenery, relaxing beaches and the thrill of water sports. Be sure to stop at the famous Praia da Dona Ana in Lagos or snorkel in Albufeira, a paradise of marine life and coral, offering caves, crystal clear waters and even shipwrecks.
  • Of course, you can’t go wrong with a boating holiday in destinations like Greece and Croatia, home to various island archipelagos that you can explore with your sailboat charter.

The best thing about a sailboat rental with Click&Boat is the opportunity to experience unique itineraries and routes. So, how about choosing the destination of your dreams and creating a totally personalised cruise: choose your starting points, activities, and schedules and enjoy your holiday in a new way!

Should I embark on a bareboat sailboat charter?

It’s true that sailboats are the best vessel to choose to get the most authentic sailing experience, however, they are notoriously tricky to navigate since they are driven by the power of the wind. The need to present a nautical licence to sail a sailboat depends on the legislation of the place where you are going to sail, and also on the owner of the boat: some do not make their boats available for charter without a licence. In France, for example, no licence is needed to sail a sailboat, while in Spain a permit is only required for those up to 6 metres in length and in specific areas. In contrast, in places like Brazil and Portugal, it is not possible to drive a recreational sailboat without a licence. But this is not a cause for concern. You should always keep in mind local weather conditions, wind and tides. If you have a valid licence and you want the challenge of navigating the waves, you can find plenty of bareboats on our platform.

In case you do not have the necessary licence or nautical permit, Click&Boat always offers you the option to rent a sailing boat with a skipper. This way, a professional sailor will guide the boat and all you have to do is relax. But if you are a sailing enthusiast, don't miss the opportunity to learn from this professional the basic sailing techniques, organisation and layout of the boat, basic sailor's knots, etc. It is a unique opportunity to prepare yourself for future sailing!

Which sailboat should I choose for my sailing?

The fleet of sailboats offered by Click&Boat is very complete. You will find luxury sailboat charters from Bavaria Yachts, impeccably designed boats from the former Beneteau, practical and innovative sailboats from Jeanneau, as well as boats from Dufour and dozens of other renowned shipyards. Use the additional filters on the left of the page to choose capacity, size, and power and find your preferred boatyard for your sailboat rental, and that's it! Now that you have found the sailboat of your dreams at Click&Boat, all you have to do is book it and get on board. Shall we set sail?

Small Boat Rentals

Capri / j-24 / soling 26’.

Enjoy an easy afternoon sail aboard a stable J-24′, Soling 26′ or Capri 22’!  Please note: sailing experience is required in addition to passing our small boat sailing quiz in person on the day of your rental.

Known for its sweet sailing performance in nearly all conditions, the Catalina Capri 22′ has been winning over sailors since its introduction. The Capri 22 is more comfortable, safer at sea, and easier to maintain than other boats in its class. Its striking deck profile is flared across the stern and its wide cockpit curves are comfortable for crew both during and after sailing.

HOURLY:  $65/hour

DAILY: $260/day

CAPACITY: 6 people

Please note that reservations are only available for day sail rentals. All hourly rentals are done on a walk-in, first come, first served basis.

The J-24′ is one of the most popular one design racers in the world. Also a great daysailer, the J-24′ is maneuverable and responsive. With a spacious and workable deck and small cabin below, it is a top pick for sailing education. Additionally, it is equipped with an auxiliary electric motor for easy launching and docking. It is a very stable boat and able to handle challenging cruising conditions.

HOURLY: $80/hour

DAILY: $320/day

CAPACITY: 5 people

The Soling 26′ was designed as an Olympic class racer and is built for speed. Quick and responsive, the Soling handles well under most conditions and its simplified running rigging makes it even easier to sail. It lacks only the creature comforts of a cruising yacht and more than makes up for it with the thrill of a “go fast” afternoon sail. Features include a main traveler, hiking straps and a tiller extension.

HOURLY: $65/hour

CAPACITY: 4 people

FAQs - before you come!

What if the weather looks bad? We do our best to watch the weather, but mother nature often has the last word when it comes to sailing. Cancellations due to weather can occur at any time before or even during your sail. Your safety on the water is our #1 concern, and we will let you know if the weather looks unsafe. The school may cancel reservation at any time due to inclement weather, wind, unacceptable activity, or any other reason deemed permissible by Northern Virginia Sailing School. If the weather is forecast as a small craft advisory or worse, management will determine if your rental or lesson will be postponed or rescheduled.  If you need to cancel or reschedule, you may do so prior to 24 hours before the class, otherwise there is a $35 cancelation fee. Certification must be completed in 2024 sailing season.  A link to cancel or reschedule was included in your confirmation email. What should I bring with me? Please bring your sunscreen, hats, and lots of water! Wear boat shoes or light-colored rubber-soled shoes.  Please check the weather before you come and email us at [email protected] if you are unsure. The weather on the water can be 10 degrees warmer on hot days with no wind and can be 10 degrees cooler on windy, wet, or overcast days. Pack accordingly to make your experience a positive one. Are private classes available? Yes!  Private classes are available and you must schedule them directly by phone or email (not on our booking portal). Can I bring a friend/child on the boat with me? If you are renting the boat or on a captained cruise, you may bring 3 guests with you (perhaps 1-2 more if there are kids, depending on their size.  Email us ahead of time to check if you are unsure).  All classes and cruises must can only have students onboard.  If your significant other or friend is interested in sailing, but you are unsure if you want to sign them up, email us to see if there is room aboard for them to accompany the lesson as a try sail ($100, plus merchant fee). What is your cancellation policy? Hey it happens - we get it.  There are two types of cancellations - the ones you need to make and the ones we need to make due to weather.  Reservation changes that you make must be made 24 hours in advance of the reservation or a cancellation fee may be charged. It's easy - you can do it conveniently online on our booking portal or by clicking the link on your email confirmation and clicking cancel.  The school may cancel reservation at any time due to inclement weather, wind, unacceptable activity, or any other reason deemed permissible by Northern Virginia Sailing School. If you need to cancel or reschedule, you may do so prior to 24 hours before the class, otherwise there is a $35 cancelation fee. Certification must be completed in 2024 sailing season.  A link to cancel or reschedule was included in your confirmation email. Can I bring food or drinks? We only ask that you do not bring anything that will stain white boats (red wine, grape juice, etc.).  And whatever you carry in, carry out with you when you leave. How do I get into the park? We are located inside Leesylvania State Park at 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22192. PLEASE TELL the contact station you are headed to the sailing school! Be prepared to show your confirmation email. Even if the park is closed due to capacity, you are able to enter after talking to them at the entrance. After entering the park, go under the bridge and look for the large parking lot with the Breakwater Store in the center. We are by the water, to the left of the Breakwater Store when facing the river. How old do you have to be to sail? If you can walk, you can sail.  We are only able to give ASA certifications to sailors 16 years of age or older.  We do allow children 5 years and older to come on captained cruises, assuming the weather is favorable. A personal floating device (PFDs) must be provided, properly fitted, and worn at all times for all minors. PFDs for children below 5 years of age please purchase and bring with you - we do not carry these.

I started my classes but do not want to finish, can I get a refund? If you are unsure if sailing certification is for you, please book a Try Sail class to try it first. None of our ASA certification courses are refundable once you begin your classes. Teaching certification classes is expensive and our class materials and resources are invested in your success. We also require that you complete all courses prior to the end of the season (end of October). Can I finish up my certification next year?

We recommend scheduling your classes without any large gaps to get the most out of your purchase. Our certification courses should really be completed in the season they are begun. We handle these on a case by case basis.  If you find you are in this position, please email us to see what your options are for sign-ups in the following season.

Whether you’re renting a boat with captain or you choose a bareboat, always keep in mind this basic safety guidelines:

  • if you rent a captained charter, always pay close attention to your captain
  • walk slowly and never run onboard as you can easily slip and fall overboard
  • be mindful of stairs and hatches (never step on them)
  • if you go swimming, floating or paddling, stay away from other boats even if they are anchored or moored
  • pay attention to the other group members and make sure that everybody is accounted for at all times

Tips for responsible boating

If you’re looking to explore our beautiful planet, a yacht charter is a great place to start. Explore coral reefs with your snorkel, discover hidden bays and islands and generally enjoy the view of nature. Remember, that sailing motto:  'Take only photos, leave only wake'  (OK, so we paraphrased). To be a responsible sailor, remember:

  • Don’t disturb coral or sealife
  • Take your trash home (and don’t throw anything in the sea)
  • Respect the locals and their customs wherever you go
