AMAALA Reveals Iconic New Yacht Club Designs

Designed by leading architecture firm HKS, signature 7,900sqm yacht club set over four floors is the centerpiece of stunning marina development plans

Riyadh, (23 May 2022): AMAALA, the ultra-luxury development located along Saudi Arabia’s north-western coast, has revealed its iconic design for the Triple Bay Yacht Club. Set within the Triple Bay Marina of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve, AMAALA’s new Yacht Club is a keystone development with a captivating free-flowing structure that aims to create a one-of-a-kind meeting point between land and sea. “AMAALA is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the Kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader. We anticipate that AMAALA will become an international hub for luxury yachting, and as such, the yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability,” said John Pagano, CEO, AMAALA. “HKS has created a signature piece of architecture at the heart of Triple Bay, and I look forward to seeing the concept become a globally iconic meeting place for luxury yachting enthusiasts from all over the world.” Drawing design inspiration from two sets of geometry, HKS first looked to the unique rock formations on the Saudi Red Sea coastline to create the club’s bespoke cantilevered terraces, which echo the natural shape of the surrounding cliffs, eroded over time by wind and sea. “We were clear from the outset that we wanted to create a building of its place, with the design drawing inspiration from local landscapes and culture, alongside the nature of the marine lifestyle. The team wanted to reimagine the yacht club as a modern concept, a home from home for nautical enthusiasts from all backgrounds, from leisure to elite sport,” said Dan Flower, HKS Design Director and Lead Architect for AMAALA Yacht Club. The second inspiration is drawn from mankind’s relationship with the sea and maritime history. This nautical edge will ensure the building sits seamlessly within the marina as a central hub and focal point. Alongside the ‘sea meets land’ concept, the design references the concept of a traditional Arabian house with a simple smooth white exterior that is cut back to reveal luxurious metal externally and a rich palette of natural and locally sourced materials internally such as stone, timber, and leather. “AMAALA offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape a new tourism destination and a new home for yachting on the Red Sea. It is a privilege to be involved as designers of this iconic yacht club, which is a centerpiece for the marina and set to evolve the guest experience,” explained Kevin Underwood, Global Head of Hospitality at HKS. “We brought together the global expertise of our firm, using our experience of creating luxury destinations to create something truly innovative and contemporary. Sustainability in all aspects is at the heart of our design, seamlessly integrating the building with the stunning mountain and marine landscape of the Red Sea,” he added. Covering 7,900 sq. m. and set on four levels, the ultra-luxurious club is set to create a home from home for its members whether to do business, relax, entertain or take part in a calendar of yachting events. Arrival is a key moment for guests by land or by water, with the entrance set within an arch that forms a shaded plaza and frames dramatic views to the Red Sea. The area has a mirrored vaulted ceiling over a star-lit floor which creates an alternative night sky for guests in the evening. The interior of the club, also designed by HKS, along with the landscaping detail, is as visually stimulating as the exterior, with unparalleled attention to detail to ensure guests remain connected to the landscapes around them. Utilizing local materials with a focus on stone, timber, and metals, and embracing a luxurious, yet authentic brass champagne color scheme, the lounges, and restaurant blend seamlessly together with an infinity loop-like shape throughout. Complimenting the yacht club’s functions, the 10-hectare basin hosts a 120-berth marina for yachts up to 130m in length and is designed for both residents and yachting events, regattas and launches. Deepwater superyacht berths, fuel dock, and personalized service ensure Triple Bay’s future rating as a destination for visiting superyachts, international regattas, and domestic cruising. Set across 4,155 sq. km. and due to welcome first guests in 2024, Triple Bay spans three natural bays along the coastline. The destination is designed to create a one-of-a-kind global wellness hub and is underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development. The whole development is targeting a minimum LEED Gold standard for environmental sustainability. Phase One of Triple Bay is on track to complete in 2024. It consists of eight resorts offering upwards of 1,300 hotel keys and will also feature a range of luxury F&B outlets, retail, and leisure facilities. Work is well underway on-site to progress enabling infrastructure, groundwork, and key assets with more than 1,000 workers already on site. More than 250 contracts have been awarded to date in excess of 5 billion riyals, with nearly one billion riyals awarded in the first quarter of this year alone, as delivery of the project ramps up on site. A further 1.2 billion riyals is expected to be awarded in the second quarter of the year and an RFP for the Utilities PPP has already been issued to the market, to ensure the development meets its sustainability ambitions. The destination will be off-grid, powered solely by renewable energy. AMAALA is a core component of the Vision 2030 strategy to diversify the economy by enabling rapid growth in the tourism sector. The project is expected to create upwards of 50,000 new direct, indirect, and induced jobs for Saudis, as well as upwards of 11 billion riyals to the country’s GDP once fully operational. – ENDS –

Revealed: Futuristic design for luxury yacht club and marina in the Middle East

Named Triple Bay Yacht Club, the renderings for an ambitious new project set across three natural bays along Saudi Arabia’s north-western coast have been unveiled for the first time.

The project is on track for completion in 2024, and it is expected to play a significant role in enhancing yachting activity around the Middle East and the Red Sea.

Features include a 10-hectare basin for hosting yachts of up 130 metres in length, plus an 80 metre Quai d’honneur for accommodating events including yacht shows, regattas, and other yachting events.

The full-service marina will offer 120 berths in total, and it will be supported by a unique porte-cochere for discreet arrivals by tender.

The yacht club component of Triple Bay Club will cover 7,900 squares metres and cascade across four storeys, with features including a terrace restaurant, infinity pool deck and rooftop cabana lounge. Its distinctive look is inspired by the natural erosion of stones, and international architecture firm HKS is responsible for the design.

Work on the project is already well underway, with luxury development firm Amaala leading the project. Amaala is managed by The Red Sea Development Company and forms part of the Saudi Vision 2030 program.

“We anticipate that Amaala will become an international hub for luxury yachting, and as such, the yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability,” said John Pagano, chief executive officer of Amaala.

To reduce its eco-footprint, the development is targeting a minimum LEED Gold standard for environmental sustainability.

Triple Bay Yacht Club: Saudi Arabia’s Luxury Yacht Club Revealed

Amaala has revealed the plans for the luxurious and futuristic Triple Bay Yacht Club. The project, which is located on Saudi Arabia’s North-Western coast is on track for a 2024 completion date.

Designed by celebrated architects HKS , the 7,900sqm yacht club will be a full-service marina, offering a total of 120 berths for yachts up to 130m, as well as a wide array of facilities for Captains, and yacht crew. Guests arriving at the club can experience a lift that travels from the water’s edge to an exclusive sky lounge. In addition to the luxury sky lounge, Saudi Arabias yacht club will have plenty of areas for events, shopping, dining, live entertainment, and an amphitheater.

HKS designed the club with an infinity pool at the top, simulating an aft deck, as a nod to the boats that will dock there.

The luxury development firm Amaala is helming the project, which is already well underway. Amaala is managed by The Red Sea Development Company, which also has a further two projects in the works. An extension from the Triple Bay Yacht Club is an “Art, culture and conservation site,” dubbed The Coastal Development, and “an exclusive enclave of luxurious resorts and residential estates,” named The Island.

The AMAALA Triple Bay Marina Yacht Club seeks to provide guests with uniquely memorable experiences in a spectacular setting. HKS designers had the task of designing a brand new, state-of-the-art facility with exceptional architectural design that surrounds members and guests in a contemporary yachting lifestyle experience.

Designers also faced the challenge of designing a building that forms a gateway to the Red Sea, allowing the public access to the waterfront and marina views without exclusion. The Yacht Club sits at the heart of the Marina village community, combining a luxury members club with an active urban realm, and serves as a home-away-from home for local and global travelers as well as international yachting fraternities.

The Design Solution

AMAALA’s new Yacht Club is a keystone development with a captivating free-flowing structure that delivers a one-of-a-kind meeting point between land and sea.

Drawing creative inspiration from two sets of geometry, the HKS design team first looked to the unique rock formations on the Saudi Red Sea coastline to create the club’s bespoke cantilevered terraces, which echo the natural shape of the surrounding cliffs. The second inspiration is drawn from mankind’s relationship with the sea and maritime history. This nautical edge will ensure the building sits seamlessly within the marina as a central hub and focal point.

Alongside the ‘sea meets-land’ concept, the design references the notion of a traditional Arabian house with a simple, smooth white exterior that reveals luxurious metal externally and a rich palette of natural and locally sourced materials internally such as stone, timber and leather. The building’s position at the center of the marina village acts as a meeting place for visitors arriving from land and sea. The 360-degree nature of the building means all servicing is handled at the basement level, the ground floor arrival level is the start of a luxurious guest journey, and the Venetian style grand stair leads guests up to lounges, bars and restaurants at the upper levels. The building’s geometry marks the transition from the desert and mountains inland to the open sea and horizon beyond. Covering 7,900 sqm (85,034 sf) and set on four levels, the ultra-luxurious club creates a home-like environment for its members to do business, relax, entertain or participate in a calendar of yachting events.

Whether traveling by land or sea, that arrival moment is a special one for Triple Bay guests. The entrance is set within an arch that forms a shaded plaza and frames dramatic views of the Red Sea. The area has a mirrored vaulted ceiling over a star-lit floor, which creates an alternative night sky for guests in the evening.

The interior of the club — designed by ROAM — is as visually stimulating as the exterior, with unparalleled attention to detail to ensure guests remain connected to the landscapes around them. Using local materials with a focus on stone, timber and metals and embracing a luxurious brass champagne color scheme, the interior design helps the bars, lounges and the signature restaurant to blend seamlessly into an infinity loop-shaped journey through the club.

Triple Bay spans three natural bays along the coastline. The destination is designed to create a one-of-a-kind global wellness hub and is underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development. The entire development is targeting a minimum LEED Gold standard for environmental sustainability with the yacht club designed to achieve a LEED Platinum rating.

Amaala, a luxury development on Saudi Arabia ’s north-western coast, has unveiled the design for its Triple Bay Yacht Club.

Set within the Triple Bay Marina in the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve, the club moves Amaala towards its goal of becoming an international yachting hub.

Its design draws inspiration from the unique rock formations of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastline, which are translated as cantilevered terraces that echo the natural contours of the surrounding cliffs.

HKS Design, the company responsible for the project, also draws on the relationship between mankind and the sea, and builds on the idea of the yacht club acting as a meeting point between the land and the sea.

“Amaala is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader,” says John Pagano, chief executive of Amaala.

The design also borrows from traditional Arabian houses, with its smooth white exterior and palette of natural and locally sourced materials, such as stone, timber and leather.

The entrance is set within an arch that forms a shaded plaza and acts as a frame for dramatic views of the Red Sea. The area has a mirrored vaulted ceiling over a starlit floor for an added sense of theatre.

Set over four levels and 7,900 square metres, the Triple Bay Yacht Club will house lounges and restaurants, as well as a 120-berth marina for vessels up to 130 metres long. It is designed for residents and yachting events, regattas and launches, with deepwater superyacht berths, a fuel dock and personalised services.

“The team wanted to reimagine the yacht club as a modern concept, a home from home for nautical enthusiasts from all backgrounds, from leisure to elite sport.”

The Red Sea Development Company has revealed bold new designs for the Triple Bay Yacht Club, which is set to be built on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast as part of the Vision 2030 project.

Designed by HKS, the architects behind the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium and the Jinjiang International Exhibition Center, the Triple Bay Yacht Club will feature 120 berths for yachts up to 130m in length.

The comparison the iconic Yacht Club de Monaco is not accidental, with the developers pointing out that this is more than double the maximum length permitted at the Principality’s yacht club (although Monaco can accommodate larger yachts on the other side of Port Hercule).

Key features of the four-storey Triple Bay Yacht Club will include a rooftop cabana lounge and infinity pool, cantilevered terraces, an amphitheatre for public performances, and a private skylounge, which is directly accessible from the water via a single elevator.

The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) from Saudi Arabia has shown the world its vision for the upcoming Triple Bay Yacht Club and it’s a sight to behold. The ultra-luxury yacht club will be built on the Red Sea as part of the Vision 2030 project and will anchor on the Triple Bay resort.

The newly-revealed vision for the yacht hub shows intricate, bold designs, with a fascinating free-flowing structure inspired by local eroded rock, combined with traditional air movement architecture.

Set within the Triple Bay Marina of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve, the 7,900-sq-m facility is designed by leading architecture company HKS as part of the “Amaala” ultra-luxury tourism development plans. This is a mega project thought up to stir the kingdom’s economy away from oil.

“Amaala is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader. We anticipate that Amaala will become an international hub for luxury yachting, and as such, the yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability,” said John Pagano, CEO of TRSDC, Amaala and the Red Sea Project.

The bold designs of the Triple Bay Yacht Club show that it will be a four-story structure featuring a rooftop cabana lounge, cantilevered terraces, an amphitheater for public performances, an infinity pool, as well as a private skylounge.

No less than 120 berths will be built to accommodate craft up to 130m in length, which is twice as long as the reputable Monaco Yacht Club can hold. Members of this ultra-luxury yacht club and guests will be able to get from their boats directly to the private skylounge via a lift that can be accessed from the water’s edge.

Phase one of Triple Bay Project, which is set to open in 2024, includes eight resorts offering approximately 1,200 hotel rooms.

Up until now, over 250 contracts worth more than $1.33 billion have been awarded for the construction of this wonder.

Saudi Arabia to build luxury yacht club

The ultra-luxury yacht club will be built on the red sea as part of the vision 2030 project….

Set within the Triple Bay Marina of the Prince Mohammad bin Salman Nature Reserve, the 7,900-sq-m facility is designed by leading architecture company HKS. The yacht club sits under the Amaala umbrella, which is managed by The Red Sea Development company and forms part of the Saudi Vision 2030 program. The design of this unique space aims to showcase a captivating free-flowing structure that creates a meeting point between the land and the sea.

John Pagano, CEO of TRSDC, Amaala and the Red Sea Project said, “Amaala is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader. We anticipate that Amaala will become an international hub for luxury yachting. The yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability.”

The first phase of the yacht club includes eight resorts offering approximately 1,200 hotel rooms, scheduled for completion in 2024. Members of this ultra-luxury yacht club and their guests will be able to get from their boats directly to the private sky-lounge via a lift that can be accessed from the water’s edge.

The yacht club will cover 7,900-sq-m across four storeys, with features including a terrace restaurant, infinity pool deck and rooftop cabana lounge. Inspiration originally came from the unique rock formations on the Saudi Red Sea coastline – this can be seen in the club’s cantilevered terraces, which echo the natural shape of the surrounding cliffs.

Pagano added “HKS has created a signature piece of architecture at the heart of Triple Bay, and I look forward to seeing the concept become a globally iconic meeting place for luxury yachting enthusiasts from all over the world.”

Amaala is a core component of the Vision 2030 strategy to diversify the economy by enabling rapid growth in the tourism sector. The project is expected create some 50,000 new jobs for Saudis, as well as upwards of 11bn riyals to the country’s GDP once fully operational.

AMAALA unveils design of Triple Bay Yacht Club

Covering 7,900sqm and set on four levels, the ultra-luxurious club is set to create a space for members to do business, relax, entertain or take part in a calendar of yachting events

AMAALA has unveiled the design for the Triple Bay Yacht Club, which is taking shape in the Triple Bay Marina of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve. The developer explained that the new yacht club is a keystone development with a captivating free-flowing structure that aims to create a one-of-a-kind meeting point between land and sea.

Comment on its design, John Pagano, CEO, AMAALA explained, “AMAALA is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the Kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader. We anticipate that AMAALA will become an international hub for luxury yachting, and as such, the yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability.”

Design firm HKS is said to have drawn inspiration from two sets of geometry; it first looked to the rock formations on the Saudi Red Sea coastline to create the club’s bespoke cantilevered terraces, which echo the natural shape of the surrounding cliffs, eroded over time by wind and sea, a statement from AMAALA explained.

Pagano added, “HKS has created a signature piece of architecture at the heart of Triple Bay, and I look forward to seeing the concept become a globally iconic meeting place for luxury yachting enthusiasts from all over the world.”

“AMAALA offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape a new tourism destination, and a new home for yachting on the Red Sea. It is a privilege to be involved as designers of this iconic yacht club, which is a centrepiece for the marina and set to evolve guest experience,” explained Kevin Underwood, Global Head of Hospitality at HKS.

“We brought together the global expertise of our firm, using our experience of creating luxury destinations to create something truly innovative and contemporary. Sustainability in all aspects is at the heart of our design, seamlessly integrating the building with the stunning mountain and marine landscape of the Red Sea,” he added.

Set across 4,155sqkm and due to welcome first guests in 2024, Triple Bay spans three natural bays along the coastline. The destination is designed to create a one-of-a-kind global wellness hub and is underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development. The whole development is targeting a minimum LEED Gold standard for environmental sustainability. Phase One of Triple Bay is on track to complete in 2024. It consists of eight resorts offering upwards of 1,300 hotel keys and will also feature a range of luxury F&B outlets, retail, and leisure facilities, the statement from AMAALA noted.

AMAALA added that work is well underway on-site to progress enabling infrastructure, groundwork, and key assets with more than 1,000 workers already on site. More than 250 contracts have been awarded to date in excess of US $1.3bn, with nearly $266mn awarded in the first quarter of this year alone, as delivery of the project ramps up on site .

A further $319mn is expected to be awarded in the second quarter of the year and an RFP for the Utilities PPP has already been issued to the market, to ensure the development meets its sustainability ambitions. The destination will be off grid, powered solely by renewable energy, AMAALA concluded.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.

Adult Rowing - California Yacht Club CYC is a great place for adults of all ages and skills to row out of Marina Del Rey. We have more than 60 active adult rowers with a wide range of interests and motivations varying from recreational, fitness, social, open water, and racing.

CYC Rowing - California Yacht Club - Rowing About us CYC Junior Rowing CYC offers a range of rowing programs suitable for girls and boys ages 12 - 18. CYC membership is not required to participate. Our junior rowing programs include: a highly successful competitive rowing team, a recreational program and private lessons.
