Bavaria 50 Cruiser

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: October 19, 2012

As far as boat tests go, I could’ve been easily distracted during my sail aboard the Bavaria 50 Cruiser , the last in the model line to be revamped by the team at Farr Yacht Design . First, the arid, rock-strewn hills of the Turkish coast around Alacati were like nothing I’d ever seen. Greek isles danced in the distance. Atop the surrounding ridges, farms of wind generators stood testament to the fact that this area of the Aegean is among the windiest to be found and the ideal exotic proving grounds for Germany’s largest boatbuilder.

And then there was the wind itself to talk about, or, to be more precise, the totally baffling near-complete lack of it, which had us bobbing about much of the morning before we motored in for lunch, hoping that the afternoon’s heat might scare up a breeze.

The 50 Cruiser, though, and the crew from Bavaria managed to command my full attention as we motored out and back, the 75-horsepower Volvo and optional Gori propeller pushing us along at a very respectable cruising speed of 7.6 knots at 2,200 rpm and at 8.5 knots or better with the engine wide open. For yuks, I throttled back and threw the power plant into reverse. We came to a sharp halt, backed and turned with ease, and, once under way again, took a tight spin and watched the 50 twirl around, upright and within a boat length and a half of itself. Under power, at least, this all-round-sailer delivered an agile performance.

Post lunch, we’d learn that the boat was a spritely light-air sailer, too.

To be honest, this was the first of the Farr-designed Bavarias that I’d been aboard, and I was struck immediately by the solid feel of the boat and the well-thought-out layout on deck and below. From the dock, we stepped aboard the electric-powered fold-down transom and swim platform, which provided uncluttered access to a cockpit that was flanked at its aft end by a split backstay and twin pedestals with Lewmar wheels and rack-and-pinion steering. A sturdy cockpit table provided a good handhold and could double as a place to brace when the boat heels. In addition to teak on the cockpit sole and swim platform, the model we sailed had optional teak decks that provided solid footing forward.

The double-spreader Seldén in-mast furling main is controlled by a sheet led to a cabin-top winch, an arrangement that’s typical on cruising boats but puts control of the sail several steps away from a singlehanded or short-crewed helmsman. Sheets for the slightly overlapping 106-percent genoa (on a Furlex furler) run to fairleads inboard on the cabin top, and from there to electric winches on the cockpit coamings, leaving the side decks free from clutter and making sail control a fingertip exercise. However, one does have to leave the wheel and step forward around the helm and between the table and seats to handle sheets when tacking.

Under sail, in 9 knots true, we hit just under 7 knots and tacked through 85 degrees. Still, it left me wanting more. The smooth-feeling steering led me to believe that with a little more wind, we’d have heeled smartly, the leeward of the twin rudders would’ve dug in, and we’d have been off for a spirited beat or, better yet, a reach like the one enjoyed by a Bavaria 50 owner with whom I spoke that evening following his arrival from a several-day sail from the Med.

Belowdecks, the 50 is downright spacious, with the saloon laid out to accommodate a crowd. A U-shaped amidships galley to port keeps the cook a part of the party, and the amply sized table with U-shaped seating to starboard and an amidships bench could easily seat eight. I liked the idea of the head to starboard of the companionway and just forward of that side’s aft cabin. It has a separate shower that can double as a place to store wet foulies. A private head and sink is to port for the other aft double. The four-cabin model we tested had a cabin forward of the galley with two bunks and a head and shower opposite to starboard. A large owner’s cabin and V-berth were forward, just aft of a water-tight bulkhead and the deep chain locker in the bow.

Three other layouts are available: a three-cabin model with an enormous owners space forward that includes a large head and shower to port and extended hanging lockers to starboard; a four-cabin layout that splits the V-berth in two, each side with its own head; and a five-cabin model with the split V-berth, a shared head forward, and a cabin with two bunks. The interior is well lit and airy, thanks to 17 opening hatches and 12 ports, and comes with wood and sole options that range from light-colored ones to dark chestnut.

Farr has drawn a hull shape with a fairly fine entry, broad shoulders, and a beam that’s carried aft. The layup consists of gelcoat and a layer of vinylester resin outboard, then solid hand-laid polyester and glass below the waterline and a glass-and-Airex foam sandwich above. The deck is Airex cored as well, with integral aluminum plates in the laminate where hardware is mounted.

Intended to be a well-rounded cruiser for both the private owner and charterer, the Bavaria 50 delivers good value with its $377,000 price tag. Add performance into the equation, and it’s hard not to enjoy an afternoon out on the 50 Cruiser. With a little wind and a destination in mind, a week or more wouldn’t be so bad, either.

If any builder is determined to keep ahead of the trends in a rapidly
changing market, it’s Bavaria. When the brand switched to Farr designs. Performance went up in leaps and bounds and the styling received some attention too.

Bavaria has now moved on from Farr’s Cruiser range by introducing the C models, designed by Cossutti Yacht Design. First came the C57 in 2017, and then the C45 and C50 last year.

It would be hard to think of a name with a higher profile or a more impressive pedigree in performance yacht design than Farr.

At the same time, Bavaria seems to like to shake things up now and again and it’s not as though Cossutti is an unknown quantity.

Good sailing performance remains near the top of the priority list with the C models, but many other factors are behind their introduction.

Bavaria wanted to increase comfort, to provide more of the mod cons demanded by today’s buyers, to offer more choices with a whole range of mix-and-match interior layout options and, importantly, to build what it calls ‘smart connectivity’ into the boats in the form of a fully integrated electronics system.

B&G’s Naviop lets you call up any navigation data from any screen on board.

The screens also function as switch panels so, for example, you can check tank levels or turn navigation lights on or off from the helm.

Monitoring data from your phone is possible now and the next stage will be the ability to control the systems from your phone or tablet.

If you’re heading to your boat for the weekend and want the beers cold in the fridge and the cabin nicely warm when you get there, just log in and it’s done in a couple of taps.

Although you might imagine that this sort of electronic connectivity is a bolt-on that could be added to any boat, in practice it needs to be incorporated into the design from the outset.

And that’s one reason why the Cruisers are still running alongside the C range, at least for the time being, as more basic and lower-cost alternatives.

The Cruiser 51, which started life as the Cruiser 50, was introduced in 2010 and costs around £40,000 less than the C50.

Plenty of other new features are to be found in the C range too.

Galleys are no longer linear but have moved aft.

And whereas the Cruisers used the full length of the hull for accommodation, the new models have dinghy garages in the stern.

Externally, twin rudders have given way to single blades because owners wanted the manoeuvrability under power that comes with prop-wash.

They wanted self-tacking jibs too – now they’ve got them.

THE TEST VERDICT

For a 50-footer, the C50 is far from expensive.

Bavaria is promoting the performance, the comfort, the range of options, the integrated technology, the innovation, the style, the light and airy interior and the vacuum-infused laminates among other features.

You can see why.

In many ways this is quite an impressive boat.

It’s a calculated, engineered product; one that has resulted from a lot of analysis and number-crunching and that has been created to appeal to the widest possible audience.

With the C50, Bavaria has, perhaps, come of age.

It has produced a boat that will undoubtedly be seen in some respects as setting the standards for mainstream cruising yachts in this size range.

Bavaria C50, Credit: David Harding

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

If you want a roomy 50-footer for coastal cruising with all the mod cons, the C50 will probably be on your list.

Of course you could sail her across the Atlantic if you wanted to, but she wasn’t conceived as a blue-water cruiser: her design makes her better suited to island-hopping in the Med, and that’s the sort of thing she will do in some style.

This is a boat you might buy instead of a villa.

At the same time she’s by no means slow or unresponsive to sail, so you might have some enjoyably swift sailing as you move your comfortable home on the water from one location to another.

Whether or not she appeals to your soul, she will give the logical and analytical parts of your brain plenty to think about.

However, in order to ensure that you do not face any difficulties in the country, it is recommended that you have enough money to cover your day to day expenses.

How many months before the trip should I apply for a Kazakhstan Visa?

Luckily, the processing time for a general Kazakh permit is only 5 working days. As a result, you can apply quite late. You must apply for the permit at least a week before your travel in order to accommodate the back and forth travelling time to the embassy. It is recommended to apply about 10 working days in advance to be on the safer side.

A Guide on How to Get Kazakhstan Visa for Indian Citizens

' src=

We all know how exhausting and apprehending it can be when you are trying to apply for a visa to a new country. If you are looking for information on how to obtain a Kazakhstan Visa for Indian tourists, then you have come to the right place.

In this article, I have outlined everything you need to know to apply for a Kazakhstan visa from India!

A Guide to Getting a Kazakhstan Visa for Indians

Methods for obtaining a kazakhstan visa.

Firstly, let’s talk about how you can apply for the Kazakhstan Visa. Similar to most countries, Kazakhstan offers three different ways in which you can apply for a visa here: E-Visa, Visa on Arrival, and Applying at the Embassy .

Kazakhstan Visa

Each method has its own set of pros and cons and I will be discussing them in detail below.

Visa-Free Regime

Well, thanks to the new rules and processes, there are a lot of countries that actually don’t need a visa in order to enter Kazakhstan.

Basically, citizens of these countries don’t need a visa in advance or at the border to enter and stay in Kazakhstan. They will only get a stamp at the Customs desk and a registration card to be filled by the Migration Officer.

This visa-free policy is applicable for entry from all seaports , airports, and land borders .

Here is a list of countries and regions whose ordinary passport holders don’t require a visa for 30 days :

  • All EU Citizens
  • New Zealand
  • Switzerland

Apart from the above-mentioned countries, this list of countries can enter Kazakhstan visa-free along with the entry criteria :

  • Ukraine – 90 days free stay within 180 days period
  • Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia – free stay for 90 days
  • South Korea – free stay up to 30 days out of a maximum total stay of 60 days, within 180 days period
  • Ecuador – free stay for 30 days within 180 days period
  • Argentina, Brazil – free stay for 30 days within 1 year period
  • Hong Kong – free stay for 14 days

UPDATE: Indians and Chinese Nationals can obtain visa-free access to Kazakhstan for 14 days upon arrival, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

With Kyrgyzstan Visa

The nationals of the below-mentioned countries who hold a valid Kyrgyzstan visa can visit the border districts of the Jambul and Almaty regions to see places like the big Almaty Lake . However, this is only possible as long as your Kyrgyzstan visa is valid.

  • Liechtenstein

Netherlands

  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Korea

Non – Ordinary Passports

Apart from the above-mentioned scenarios, citizens who hold diplomatic and service category passports also get a free stay in Kazakhstan. You can check out more information about them on the Visa Policy of Kazakhstan .

For citizens who have no restrictions on their free stay, it is easy to re-enter the country as many times as they like. In fact, you can easily re-enter the same day as well and you will get a fresh 30-days free stay for yourself.

This is how most of the above-mentioned country citizens end up staying in this gorgeous country for 6-7 months at a time.

Applying at the Embassy

Applying at an embassy is easy, especially if you know the process well. The only thing which you need to focus on is to get your documents ready beforehand.

In order to help you out in applying through the embassy, we have mentioned the brief process below. I have further discussed each part in detail in the later sections.

  • First, find the Embassy office in your City or closest to your jurisdiction.
  • Next, read all the visa related details on their website for updated process or Visa fees.
  • Purchase or Arrange a LOI for your Kazakhstan Visit (if applicable).
  • Submit the the Visa Fees in USD to the mentioned Bank for Embassy.
  • Fill the Visa Form with correct details and attach your passport-sized photograph on it.
  • Gather all the required documents and your passport for applying for the visa.
  • Reach the Embassy Office at the prescribed time to drop off the documents along with your Passport.
  • Collect the Receipt at the Embassy Office and keep it with you safely.
  • You might be called for an interview for getting the visa. (Doesn’t happen that frequently if you have all your documents in place)
  • Go to the Embassy Office to pick up your passport and Visa after a week.
  • Show your Visa and Immigration Form at the Customs Desk and enter the country hassle-free.
Kazakhstan Embassy office usually follows the Kazakhstan holidays. So, you won’t be able to drop or pick up your documents during these days.

An easier and simpler method for applying for a Kazakhstan visa is to obtain an e-visa for this country. Starting from January 2019, citizens from 117 countries and regions can apply for an e-visa for tourism purposes.

But you will need an LOI in order to get the e-visa. And the visa is a single-entry visa applicable for 30 days only.

For business e-visa, citizens of only 23 countries can apply. If you get an e-visa, then you can enter Kazakhstan through Almaty or Astana airport only.

You can check out the list of countries that are eligible for e-visa and decide if you can apply for it.

Registeration for a Foreigner

Make sure that you have your LOI ready before you start applying for the e-visa. Once you have the LOI, you can follow the below steps to proceed with your application.

How to Register Yourself for E-Visa

  • First, navigate to the E-Visa official website for Kazakhstan and translate the page to English.
  • Then, register a new account by clicking on the ‘ Registration ’ button.
  • On the next page, choose ‘ Registration of a foreigner ’.
  • Then, fill out your details like Name, email, login id, password, etc. and click on the button to proceed.

Fill in Personal Information

Steps for Applying for Kazakhstan E-Visa

  • After you have registered successfully, you will be taken to the home page. Here, you need to click on the ‘Go to Personal Account’ link.

Login to Personal Account for Kazakhstan E-Visa

  • From the ‘ Services for Foreigners ’ menu, click on ‘ Electronic Visa ’ option.
  • Check the checkbox for ‘ Yes, I have an invitation code from Kazakhstan side. ’ and click on Continue button.
  • Next, you will be shown information about the E-Visa which you need to read carefully before checking the check box ‘ I am acquainted with the conditions of using an electronic visa. ’ and then click on Continue.

Kazakhstan E-Visa Proces

  • Finally, you will be taken to the E-visa details page where you need to enter information like the Invitation Registration Number (LOI Number), Passport Number, Gender, Date of Birth, and Citizenship. Once you have filled the details and double-checked them, you can click on ‘Create a new e-visa’ button.

Fill the E-Visa details

  • Once this is done, you need to pay the consular fees.
  • After that, you need to wait a little before you receive your e-visa which you can simply print.
  • Show the printed e-visa when you are crossing the Passport Control section in Almaty and Astana Airport.
Although e-visa process was introduced in 2019, it is currently WIP. So, you still need to apply via embassy or get a Visa on arrival for Kazakhstan. Email the Kazakhstan embassy or call them up to check if the e-visa has started working or not before you apply.

Visa on Arrival

For people who belong to a country without a Kazakh diplomatic mission, it is possible to get a pre-arranged visa for 1 month. They can get the visa on arrival after paying the visa fee of USD 80 and showing a legitimate invitation letter. You will also need to get approval from the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can only enter through one of the following checkpoints:

  • Almaty Airport
  • Astana Airport
  • Aktau Airport
  • Atyrau Airport
  • Oral Ak Zhol Airport

You can check whether you fall under the VOA by checking if your country is present in this list of diplomatic missions of Kazak . If it doesn’t then you can get VOA if you have the LOI and approval in place.

For tourists whose country is present in this list, you can search if you come in the Visa-free regime or e-visa option. If not, then you will need to apply for a visa at the Kazakh embassy in your country.

Transit Visa

If you aren’t going to stay in Kazakhstan for more than 5 days or actually have a layover here, then you can also apply for the Kazakhstan Transit Visa.

You can get a single-entry or multiple-entry transit visa which can cost you anywhere between 10 – 20 USD. For applying for the transit visa at the embassy, you need to show proof of onward travel: visa for the final destination and transportation proof.

In the Single Entry transit visa, you can stay for up to 5 days in Kazakhstan in a 90-days timeframe and will be allowed a single entry. In the Multiple Entry transit visa, you can stay for up to 5 days in Kazakhstan for multiple entries in a 180-days timeframe.

Visa-Free Transit Program

Passport holders of India can stay in Kazakhstan for 72 hours without any visa. This program is currently effective till December 31, 2020, but there are a lot of criteria that have to be met in order to avail of this.

Criteria for obtaining 72-hour Transit Free Visa in Kazakhstan:

  • You should be flying with Air Astana or one of the Kazakh airlines.
  • You need to be transiting via the Almaty, Nur-Sultan, Shymkent, Aktau, Taraz or Karakanga International airport to a third country or returning back from a third country.

This Air Astana transit-free visa regime is applicable to both groups and individual passengers. Here are a few guidelines to follow if you are planning to avail this opportunity:

  • Inform the Kazakh airline’s staff when you are departing from your city at the check-in counters itself.
  • If you are planning to stay in any of the above-mentioned cities, book a hotel beforehand. Also, contact the Kazakh airline representative office before departure and share the hotel details with them.
  • Valid Air ticket or boarding passes for the third country where you will be heading in 72 hours.
  • The boarding pass of the previous flight
  • Valid Passport with at least 1 blank page in it.
  • Visa for the final destination, if required
Currently, the Visa-Free transit program has been suspended till 1 July, 2020 due to the ongoing crisis.

What is Letter of Invitation (LOI)

For citizens who don’t belong to the visa-free category, you will need to obtain a letter of invitation (Visa Support) in order to apply for the visa for Kazakhstan. Most travel agencies in Kazakhstan and Central Asia travel specialists offer LOI for visa applications.

Your Visa Support needs to be approved by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan if you need a tourist visa.

However, there are around 48 countries that don’t need an LOI for Single Entry Service Visa (A3), Business Visa (B1, B3), Private Visa (B10), and Tourist Visa (B12). These countries have to submit a Letter of Request instead of the Invitation Letter. You can check out this list of countries that don’t require the LOI.

If you need an LOI to apply for the visa, then you can contact one of the travel agencies like Leela Internationals, Kazakh Service Center, etc. They usually charge USD 30 to 100 depending on your visa type. For Visa on arrival, mention this clearly to the travel agent when applying for the LOI. This is because not all travel agencies can provide you with an LOI that is suitable for VOA.

Make sure that you apply for the LOI a month before your trip and at least 1-2 weeks before applying for the Visa. It can take anywhere between 1-2 weeks to get an approved LOI.

Visa Categories for Kazakhstan

One of the most important things to determine when applying for the Kazakhstan visa is the right visa category. Kazakhstan offers around 39 types of visas so you will need to choose the suitable one for your needs.

You can find more information about the types of visas that are offered here in this Visa categories list . In our article, we will be solely focusing on how to get a Tourist Visa for Kazakhstan.

For Tourist Visa, you need to apply to the Kazakh embassy in your country. If your country doesn’t have an embassy, then find out which embassy is responsible for your country or if you are applying for the Visa on Arrival option.

There are only two types of Tourist Visas currently available for Kazakhstan: Single Entry Visa and Multiple Entry Visa.

Single Entry

Validity of the Visa: 90 Days Allowed Stay: 30 days (maximum) Allowed Entries: 1 Cost: USD 20 – 100

Multiple Entry

Validity of the Visa: 90 Days Allowed Stay: 30 days (maximum) for each entry Allowed Entries: unlimited Cost: USD 200

The validity of the visa starts from the date you fill in the form.

With a multiple entry visa, you can stay for maximum 30 days on each visit. However, you can re-enter on the same day as well after your visa runs for the 30 days. This way, you will be allocated fresh 30 days on every entry.

Visa Process for Indians

Now, this article might have intimidated you a little bit but there is honestly no need to be scared. The visa process for Kazakhstan for Indians is quite simple and straightforward. Here is everything that you need to know to apply for a Tourist Visa for Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan Visa on an Indian Passport

In order to apply for the Kazakhstan Tourist Visa (B12), you will need an approved Invitation Letter (Visa Support) for your visit. The approval needs to be given by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan. There are 48 countries that don’t require an Invitation Letter but sadly, India is not one of them. You can get this arranged by one of the Kazakh travel agencies for a nominal fee.

As mentioned above, you can either apply for a single entry tourist visa or a multiple-entry tourist visa.

You will need to mention your Travel Insurance Company Name and the duration of your insurance validity here.

In case of transit through Kazakhstan, have you got an entry visa or residence permit for your destination?

Customs Process at Kazakhstan

The customs process is quite simple and easy at the Kazakhstan Airports. Make sure that you carry a pen with you to fill the Migrational Card.

On this card, you need to fill in your family name (surname), first name, nationality, the purpose of visit, inviting party (travel agency who provided the LOI), home address (temporary address in Kazakhstan), Signature, and Entry Date.

After filling out this form, you need to stand in the Passport Control line for ‘Other Foreigners’ and get your Passport stamped by the officer. All in all, it takes just 5 minutes and they might ask you a couple of simple questions about your visit.

You can take your bags after that and exit if you don’t have any custom goods to declare.

Visa Extension in Kazakhstan

It is not possible to get a visa extension here unless you have a medical certificate stating that you are unfit to travel.

If you are a citizen of a country or region which comes under the visa-free option, then you can simply re-enter the country after a day or on the same day. This will re-issue you another 30 days of free stay in Kazakhstan.

Earlier, there were strict consequences for overextending your stay which resulted in 3-weeks of jail time or a 5000 USD fine. However, since 2017, it is possible to overextend your stay without drastic consequences but you will need to show major reasons for delay like flight delay, flight cancellation, hospital visit, etc.

Apart from that, it is also possible to get a B2O exit visa for 15 days when you contact your nearest OVIR station for an extension. The cost of this extension is usually around 1500 – 2500 Tenge.

There is only 1 documented case of visa extension with the help of Exit Visa. So, please don’t depend on this to stay in Kazakhstan for a longer duration.

Holidays in Kazakhstan

As mentioned above, the public offices including the embassies aren’t operational on the public holidays celebrated in Kazakhstan. So, make sure that you avoid applying for the Kazakhstan visa during the below-mentioned holidays.

Registration in Kazakhstan

Currently, you don’t need to register with the Migration Police if you have a 30-day Single Entry Visa. We actually went to get registered but were told that we don’t require it. However, this policy keeps changing so it is always a good idea to try to register at the Migration Police Office . The registration needs to be done in the first 5 days of arrival, including weekends and holidays.

For citizens with a free-visa policy, there is no requirement to register as well. Only people with Multi-entry visa need to register since their migration card will be checked at the birder when exiting or re-entering the country.

Honest, before we applied for the Kazakhstan visa, we thought it is really confusing. But actually, it was quite simple and straightforward. The major hurdle was getting the LOI and preparing a draft in USD. After that, we just had to drop our documents and wait.

And well, once you have your LOI, your visa is basically confirmed. So, if you are unsure about visiting Kazakhstan because of the visa, don’t be.

It is really simple to get a visa once you have the invitation. And then, you can enjoy the wonders that this beautiful country has to offer!

What kind of visa options does an ordinary Indian passport holder have ?

We can apply for sticker Visa from the embassy but if you are planning a short trip, then you don’t need Visa. Indians can visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days. 🙂

Destination Description

See the Department of State’s  Fact Sheet on Kazakhstan  for information on U.S.-Kazakhstan relations.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Please see the  visa page of Kazakhstan’s Embassy in Washington  for the most current visa information.

  • U.S. travelers may enter Kazakhstan without a visa for stays up to 30 days on each visit and may not stay more than a cumulative 90 days within a six-month period.
  • Individuals seeking to stay beyond the 90-day limit within a six-month period may apply for a 10-year Kazakh tourist or business visa. These visas contain restrictions, permitting maximum stays of 60 or 30 days per visit, depending on the type of visa.
  • Violating the authorized period of stay in Kazakhstan or engaging in activities inconsistent with your visa category may result in fines, imprisonment, and/or delays upon exit.

If you wish to apply for a permanent residency permit in Kazakhstan, prior to travel you should determine what documentation is required, including criminal background checks, and obtain any necessary authentication for those documents.

  • For information about U.S. background checks, refer to the  Federal Bureau of Investigation’s website . The U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan does not fingerprint U.S. citizens.
  • For information on authentication of documents, please see the Department of State Website .
  • You must receive permission from the Kazakh government before traveling to certain areas bordering China and cities close to military installations. Please check the  Ministry of Internal Affairs website  for the list of closed areas or contact Kazakhstan’s Embassy in Washington, DC .

Russian Arrest Warrants:  Kazakhstan and Russia have law enforcement cooperation agreements in place that obligate information sharing on certain security and law enforcement matters. Russian authorities may request that their Kazakh counterparts give increased scrutiny to former and current U.S. government and military personnel with prior work in Russia. Additionally, Russian law enforcement or security services may request that the Kazakh authorities detain U.S. citizens upon entry or exit based on existing mutual assistance agreements.

HIV/AIDS Entry Restrictions: Some HIV/AIDS-related restrictions exist for foreign residents and workers in Kazakhstan.

  • Visitors who receive a Kazakh work or residency visa must submit a health certification form, including negative HIV test results, with their application to the Migration Police in the city where they intend to work or reside in order to receive a work or residency permit after arriving in Kazakhstan. The results must be less than three months old.
  • The city HIV clinic in the place of registration can conduct the test or may certify test results performed abroad.
  • If the original test results are in a language other than Russian or Kazakh, they must be accompanied by an official, notarized translation.
  • Please verify this information with Kazakhstan’s Embassy in Washington.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  custom regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Demonstrations  may occur. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, or on politically significant holidays. They may be accompanied by internet outages, and communications may be disrupted.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable. Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
  • Past demonstrations have ended in mass arrests.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively. Frequently, their aim is unprotected and/or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our  Terrorism  page.

Crime:  The most common crimes encountered by foreign visitors are purse snatching, pickpocketing, assaults, and robberies, although all of these incidents are rare. Be vigilant and do not carry large sums of money or valuables on the street. Financial fraud, such as ATM skimming, is prevalent.

The police sometimes conduct identification checks in public areas. Police are not required to demonstrate probable cause to detain individuals. Upon request, you must produce either a passport or an Embassy or Consulate-certified copy of your passport.

Kazakh security personnel may at times place foreign visitors under surveillance. Hotel rooms and telephones may be monitored, and personal possessions in hotel rooms may be searched.

Harassment and extortion by imposters, genuine law enforcement, and other officials does occur. Never voluntarily give your wallet to anybody. If pressured by a police officer, tell the officer that you will report the behavior to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate and to the officer’s supervisors. Try to obtain the officer's name, badge number, and license plate number, and note where and when the incident happened.

Do not use unmarked taxis. At the airport, do not leave with anyone who does not show pre-arranged identification, even if the person is holding a sign with your name.

The  U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan  is aware of isolated incidents when foreigners have been drugged, robbed, and physically assaulted at bars and nightclubs as well as in unmarked taxis.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 102 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (+7) 7172-70-21-00 or the U.S. Consulate at (+7) 7272-50-49-01. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during and after the local investigation.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide information on victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy or Consulate for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  When traveling to a foreign country, you are subject to that country’s local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Kazakhstan are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • You may be taken in for questioning if you don’t have your passport with you or if you take pictures of certain buildings or other sensitive infrastructure.
  • Kazakh customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning the export of items such as antiques. Please see our  Customs Information  page for more information.
  • Kazakhstan has a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol. You can be detained immediately if you are driving under the influence of alcohol.

Furthermore, certain acts of U.S. citizens overseas are prosecutable as crimes in the United States even if they are not illegal under the local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  U.S. Department of Justice .

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the Embassy or Consulate immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries and they may be illegal according to the local laws. Counterfeit and pirated goods may pose significant risks to consumer health and safety. You may be subject to fines and/or have to give up the counterfeit and pirated goods if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website and the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  Visitors to Kazakhstan engaging in missionary work or other religious activities must register with the Local Executive Authority office (Akimat) where the activities will take place. Kazakhstan also imposes restrictions on the importation of religious literature.

You may be fined and deported from Kazakhstan for performing any religious work without proper religious worker registration. Representatives of faith-based non-governmental organizations are considered subject to the registration requirement, even if their activities are not religious in nature.

International Volunteers:

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Kazakhstan; however, these events may be disrupted by local authorities or members of the public. Negative social attitudes towards LGBTQI+ persons are widespread, and local LGBTQI+ persons are sometimes subject to physical and verbal abuse, as well as unwanted attention from police. See   our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in Kazakhstan prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Domestic violence is common and sexual assaults do occur, though there have not been recent reports of sexual assault committed against U.S. citizens. See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Options for medical care are limited and well below U.S. standards. U.S. citizens often depart Kazakhstan for medical treatment, including many routine procedures. Some prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines are not widely available in Kazakhstan.

For emergency services in Kazakhstan call the Rescue Service by dialing 112. Other provider numbers are: 101 for Fire, 102 for Police, 103 for Emergency Medical Assistance, and 104 in the event of a gas leak.

Ambulance services are:

  • not present throughout the country and are unreliable in most areas except in major cities.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
  • not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

The U.S. Embassy maintains  a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

The Department of State does not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our  webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas. Doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment for health services.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with  Kazakhstan’s National Center for Expertise  to ensure the medication is legal in Kazakhstan.

Water Quality : In many areas, tap water does not meet U.S. standards for potability. Many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested, and ice for drinks may be made using tap water. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe.  Be aware. Surface waters (streams, rivers, and ponds) are likely to be contaminated with animal waste. Try to avoid contact with these waters.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended  by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further Health Information :

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Earthquakes:  Kazakhstan is an earthquake-prone country. The U.S. Department of State has ranked the earthquake threat level within the Almaty region in particular as Level 4 (the highest level assigned). Building practices within Kazakhstan do not generally meet U.S. seismic standards. Local authorities do not have sufficient resources to respond to a large-scale disaster.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads in Kazakhstan may be in poor repair, especially in rural areas. Signage and lighting on roadways can be poor.

  • Potholes are common and are often dangerously deep.
  • Mountainous roads, including the highway between Almaty and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, should be avoided at night or during poor weather.
  • Roads outside urban areas are often closed in winter months due to high winds and drifting snow.

Traffic Laws:  Drivers sometimes disregard traffic signals, ignore lane markings, drive after excessive alcohol consumption (despite official “zero tolerance”), drive into oncoming lanes of traffic, and move at excessive speed – including during adverse weather. Pedestrians sometimes ignore crosswalks and dart in front of cars.

  • Visitors should drive defensively at all times, as many local drivers do not follow traffic laws. Road rage can be a problem, and we recommend a non-confrontational response to such behavior.
  • Accidents involving severe injury and/or death do occur.
  • Traffic police have reportedly stopped cars to extort bribes on city streets and at periodic checkpoints on major highways.

Public Transportation:  Buses can be crowded and unsafe.

Due to the danger of theft or assault, be selective regarding which taxi you use, and always avoid entering a cab that already contains persons other than the driver. The U.S. Mission highly discourages hailing unlicensed private vehicles on the street and negotiating a fee with the driver on the spot. Ridesharing applications are widely available.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Also, visit the  website of Kazakhstan’s national tourist office  for additional information on road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Kazakhstan, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling for official duties on Kazakh airlines without prior approval, except for Air Astana and FlyArystan, due to safety concerns.

The initiative aims to simplify travel for tourists and foster a more accessible visitation process to the country.

According to the updated regulations, nationals from 110 countries are required to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in the UAE.

Interested individuals can consult the list of exempted countries and visa requirements on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (https://www.mofa.gov.ae/en/visa-exemptions-for-non-citizen) or contact the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Ports Security, and Customs (ICP) for additional information.

The UAE Digital Government clarified that GCC citizens do not need a visa or sponsorship to visit the country. They are eligible for entry by presenting a passport issued by a GCC state or an identity card upon arrival at UAE ports of entry.

Furthermore, individuals abroad are urged to visit the provided link (https://www.visitdubai.com/en/plan-your-trip/visa-information) to access the list of nationalities exempt from prior visa arrangements. Those eligible can obtain a valid entry visa for 30 days upon arrival, with a grace period of 10 days. Additionally, citizens from select countries can obtain a visa for 90 days upon arrival.

For example, citizens of India holding ordinary passports, a visit visa or permanent resident card issued by the USA, or a residence visa in the UK and European Union countries valid for at least six months, allows for a visa on arrival. This grants a stay of 14 days, with the option to extend for an additional 14 days.

In cases where prior visa arrangements are necessary, individuals not falling under visa exemption categories must obtain an entry permit issued by a sponsor before arriving in the UAE. The type of entry permit required, issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, depends on the purpose of the visit.
