MSC Seashore

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

Erica Lamberg

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

RECOMMENDED: 10 things about cruising on an adults-only ship that might surprise you

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. Read more about why you should splurge.

You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

MSC Seashore

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

MSC Seashore

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

This is my cruise review for my recent Aidanova Canaries cruise. Cruisecritic doesn't currently have this ship listed in its review section, so I'm posting it here.

This cruise was a 7 night Canaries cruise on 16th November 2019.

  • Interior Design
  • Plenty of Bars & Restaurants
  • Balcony Comfort Cabin
  • Plenty of Friendly Crew
  • The removal of the Theatre.
  • Poor Structural Design.

First of all thank you for your detailed report.

Just sme information regarding the above two points.

Crew/passenger ratio: Usually this ratio is worse than on RCCL,NCL or MSC. SO either you got the wrong impression or the ship was by far not sold out. Cause usually AIDA has a rather poor ration.

Regarding the Theatrium: This is a signature element of all of their ships since 2007.(only the three small older ship do have a real theater). I personally think this is the worst idea someone ever had when designing a cruise ship. It is way to small for the number of passengers and from many places you just can`t see much of the stage. But as this is one of their signature elements of their ships they will not remove it and will have it on all of their future ships as well.

Thank you for your review.  There is not much action on this board.  Nice to see a review.  Thank you!

Interesting review from another perspective, thank you!

Please note that AIDA, as you experienced, is really quite different on many levels. For some reason (i believe cleverly placed tv "documentaries" and other PR) they have managed to occupy the term cruising = AIDA in the german market, despite many other interesting choices... In reality, german, or rather german speaking (which includes austria, switzerland and reaches even further into italy, netherlands, luxemburg and so on) cruising is maybe 50% AIDA at most...

For instance their buffet-heavy dining concept is absolutely not every germans' cup of tea. And there is also a slight tendency away from buffet-only on their newer ships compared to the older ones.

As commented above by @CruiseMH  the passenger to space, as well as the crew to passenger ratio is notoriously on the poor side. (Admittedly, they also seem to have somewhat more "german" staff and crew with likely corresponding salaries) compared to other lines.

Combined with discount marketing through sometimes weird sales channels like ALDI supermarkets, they seem to attract somewhat less affluent and obnoxiously pennywise folks, too...

When looking for more traditional service like waited tables for dinner etc... please give TUI "Mein Schiff" a good lookin'...

AIDA does have some positive reputations as well: Interesting routes, younger demographics, more party / fun factor, very family friendly with uncomplicated baby/kids services including babysitting for example...

and each ship has one of the few, if not last, nude sunbathing areas at sea...

p.s. not taken an aida cruise myself yet... this is the essence from a lot of research and quite a few firsthand accounts... the buffet thing mostly ended up steering us other ways, whenever we had considered AIDA...

they are just now going through somewhat of a train wreck with the intro of a refurbished costa ship (former costa neo riviera) under the name of AIDAmira, but that's a whole separate story...

Thanks so much for your review!  I really enjoyed it.  I applaud you for doing something that was probably out of your comfort zone and experiencing something different.  Not speaking German on a German ship probably has it challenges, but sounds like you handled it like a pro.

I've been watching the progress of Carnival Corp's XL class ever since it was introduced.  The fact they are LNG powered is of interest to me, but even more so how high density they are.  Smaller than Royal's Oasis Class but more people.  AIDA NOVA was the first and now we have COSTA SMERALDA just making her debut.  The reviews have been horrific for the new Costa ship.  I've studied the deck plans for all 4 ships (AIDA, Costa, P&O, and Carnival) and for me personally P&O's IONA looks to be best in class.  She is the only one with a forward facing observation lounge which is awesome.  Also there are a lot of great swimming pools which both the AIDA and Costa versions seem to lack (or their pools are very small).  Second for me would be Carnival's MARDI GRAS.  Lots of pool options, and as you mentioned a true theater added (although a small one compared to most ships). The Theatrium will be used as a central gathering area of the ship, with some bars, casino, restaurant, lounges depending on the level.  I think I prefer that concept especially after your description of the Theatrium.  Regarding a true Theater, the new Costa ship added it as well, but reviews indicate it's way too small for the ship and sightlines are poor.  I'm not sure if this will be the case on the Carnival and P&O ships.

The buffet concept on AIDA would be a big turn off for me, especially on a ship as big as NOVA.   Personally I think TUI and their new MEIN SCHIFF's would be more my style in German cruising.  Those ships are have the Royal Caribbean designers behind them and they are stunning.  Kind of like a German version of Celebrity Cruises.  Not as high density either.

I do have a question regarding your experience.  It's about the cabins.  Do they have daily servicing like on other ships?  I recall reading something where they don't, or maybe it's just the twice daily servicing they don't have so no turndown?  Also is room service offered?  If assume there is a charge if it is.

Thanks again!

Just some minor corrections:

1. They are smaller,but they also have less passengers then the oasis class ships.

      Oasis = 5484(double) / 6780(max.)

     AIDANova = 5252(double) /6654(max.)

Ratio between gross tonnage and assenger is still better at Oasis class.

2. Especially on their newer bigger ships(Nova,Perla and Prima) they do also have several included dining options with table service.

The older smaller ships do only have buffet included(they do have upcharge restaurants as well)

Thanks for the info.  At some point I had read a higher double occupancy capacity than the Oasis Class but perhaps that has since been revised.  In any case I'll take the Oasis Class with a couple hundred more pax but around 44,000 gt larger.  I like those odds and having sailed on 3 of the class I know they rarely feel crowded.  The XL class is pretty high density for certain, and somehow I doubt as beautifully and thoughtfully designed as the Oasis Class.  In any case I would like to try one, probably MARDI GRAS.

Glad AIDA does include some sit down table service options.  Eating at an over crowded buffet for a week is not my idea of a vacation.

I enjoyed this review as well! Did we get an answer as to how many times the cabin is serviced a day?

The cabin was serviced twice a day like most other cruise lines I've been on. I've also cruised on the Allure of the Seas and I would choose that ship over the Aidanova every time.

  • En posetiv oplevelse.
  • Overall good ship. Many entertainments. Long waiting at all bars due to inadequate staffing. Even there are some closed bars.
  • It's not for English speaking people
  • Very disappointing, it was too crowded, no area for quiet reading or single contact.
  • New ship very dirty and bad service
  • Zero, wery bad feeling last day. That is my 23 cruising in my life but was the worst because some people cant talk with customers
  • Family friendly

Remarks Cabin

  • Stor med god indretning.
  • Room was good but Balcony is long and narrow, does not have glass wall and nothing view can be seen except sky when sitting the chair.
  • Terrible! Too small, no bedside table, tiny wall table for computer, nowhere to stow luggage, limited storage for clothes. TV didn't work. I complained and was moved.
  • Dirty with dust and hairs everywhere
  • Very far from all the main activities.
  • Very good partition of an inside cabin, new furniture with lots of storage space, clean, shower glass door, big TV and comfortable bed.
  • Nice decor. Good use of space. Particularly liked the shower room. Plenty of storage space.
  • Everything was nice and clean.
  • Aida cruise life was very good. I liked. The only thing is im not Germany. Evrrything is not in english. From all announcements to the game show... I watched 2 movies in room and they even replaced english to German language without english text. And i felt the ship just for Germany.

Ship overall

  • TOO small pools!
  • Ship was badly designed. Nowhere to sit and be quiet away from the crowds and constant to-ing and fro-ing. Couldn't walk totally around the ship. Overcrowded and noisy
  • Would be nice the most important information announced in English language to. One day one of the main shows was cancelled, announcement was made only in German. We were left very confused if the show will go ahead or not....
  • For people from different counties expect Germany, this Ship is not frendly
  • Good schedule for stops. Pretty diverse food options and buffet schedule. Nice to have drinks and ice-cream included with buffet. Entertainment quality was not so engaging. Amazing costumes though. Djamilla from Brauhaus should set the standard, always gave 100% and made people get involved....
  • Entertainment of a poor quality. Singers and productions not very good.
  • We absolutely loved our trip.
  • Very helpful and kind crew. So many interesting things to do - we have played table tennis, darts, climbung garden, water slides. The cuisine was perfect.

Aidanova review, review of aidanova.

The 2018-built AIDAnova cruise ship was constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg Germany . This is the first of two Helios-class AIDA liners, with sistership AIDAcosma (2021). Excellence/Helios-Class was preceded by Hyperion-Class ( AIDAprima and AIDAperla ).

The vessel (IMO number 9781865) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247389200) and registered in Genova .

AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

AIDAnova cruise ship

The 5400-passenger ship AIDAnova (IMO number 9781865) is among the world's most technologically advanced vessels. The newbuild was handed over to the company in autumn 2018.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

In July 2015, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft for the construction of all 4 new-class (Excellence, aka Helios) vessels. Of these, 2 liners were for Costa Cruises ( Smeralda /2019 and Toscana /2021 ) and the other 2 for AIDA (AIDAnova /2018 and AIDAcosma /2021 ). On February 27, 2018, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding contract for a 3rd AIDA ship (delivery in 2023) but in June 2021 decided the vessel ( Carnival Jubilee ) to be assigned to CCL-Carnival . This was the 98th ship order for the cruise industry's global fleet (vessels in the order book 2018-2026).

On February 21, 2017, was vessel's steel-cutting ceremony held at Meyer Werft shipyard (Papenburg Germany) . With this special event officially started the vessel's construction works. On September 6 (2017) was the keel-laying ceremony for the first hull block, held at the Papenburg shipyard's building dock. The first steel block (of all 90 blocks) has a weight of 120 tons, width 5 m (16 ft), height 8 m (26 ft) and length 21 m (69 ft). A traditional lucky coin was placed under the first block. The ship's powerplant was constructed at NEPTUN WERFT ( Warnemunde Germany ). It consists of all 4x low-emission LNG engines that supply all the power needed for the vessel's shipping and hotel operations.

Like most large -sized newbuilds , the AIDA ship Nova is LNG-powered , with 4x Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating combined output 57,2 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters (combined power output 37 MW). The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m, diameter 8 m, LNG capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m, diameter 5 m and capacity 520 m3.

On September 21, 2017, Neptun shipyard (Rostock) completed vessel's 3-decks high first (out of 2) engine room block (length 120 m / 394 ft, width 42 m / 138 ft). The block was next shipped on a cargo barge via Kiel Canal from Rostock to Papenburg. The complex carries the 4 dual-fuel engines by Caterpillar and hence AIDAnova's heart. The 2nd block (length 120 m / 394 ft, width 42 m / 138 ft) was completed on December 1. Both blocks were shipped (barged) to Papenburg shipyard on December 2. With AIDAnova engine room construction at Neptun shipyard, were engaged over 500 shipyard workers plus 500 external employees (service providers) and 120 Caterpillar (diesel engine manufacturer) employees.

On December 11, 2017, the vessel's stern (aft) section was delivered to the Papenburg yard. The section (1st of 2 equally sized, prefabricated modules) has length 120 m (394 ft), width 42 m (138 ft) and height 19 decks.

The ship's launch (float-out ceremony) was at 7 pm on August 21, 2018. The vessel was floated out from MEYER WERFT's covered building (drydock 2) and was berthed at yard’s pier for outfitting. Sea trials included passage along Ems River to the North Sea. Sea trials started on November 16, 2018. Due to construction issues, vessel's delivery was delayed and the inaugural cruise rescheduled for December 19 (originally planned for December 2).

The ship's delivery was initially scheduled for November 15, 2018, but the liner was actually delivered on December 12, in Bremerhaven . Fan fact is, that to enable AIDAnova to berth at the shipyard's pier, the floating part of Spectrum of the Seas (RCI ship) was moved to another berth in the harbor.

The christening ceremony was on August 31, 2018, held at Meyer Werft's Papenburg shipyard. The show included a live, open-air solo concert by DJ David Guetta. Advance ticket sales for the "AIDA Open Air" show started on March 9, 2018, with ticket price EUR 35 pp.

The event was unique as it was the first shipyard christening ceremony in over 20 years. The decision was made to express AIDA's gratitude to all the workers who contributed to the liner's construction. The naming ceremony was attended by around 25,000 spectators. "AIDA Open Air" show featured laser and lighting effects (produced by 20 laser projectors, over 300 stroboscopic lamps, over 100 floodlights-spotlights) and two acrobats gliding over the water. Instead of a Godmother, the liner has a "god family" (Mirza, from Hanau / Hesse, Germany) - Asad (33 yo) and Sonja (31), and their kids Adrian (3 yo) and Sophia (2 yo).

The cruise ship's tugboats-assisted conveyance on Ems River to North Sea (Papenburg to Eemshaven Holland ) was conducted on October 8-9, 2018. The conveyance schedule included for October 8th : departure from Papenburg (~7 am), passing sea lock Papenburg (~8 am), passing Friesenbridge/Weener (~2:30 pm), passing Jann Berghaus Bridge/ Leer (~7 pm), arrival at Ems River barrier/Gandersum (~11:15 pm), and for October 9th : passing Ems River barrier (~1 am), passing Emden (~2:30 am) and arrival at Eemshaven (~9 am).

Followed sea trials. The 183,900 GT-ton vessel is by far the largest Germany-built liner, as well as the world's biggest cruise ship that has ever sailed on such a narrow inland waterway. AIDAnova's Captain is Boris Becker.

The German manufacturer Wanzl Metallwarenfabrik GmbH supplied AIDAnova's 1000+ trolleys used by the ship's housekeeping and room service staff. Of all units, 150 were customized Mundus chambermaid trolleys. The custom design features fold-out push handle, locking brake (for better maneuverability and stability), 3 flexible shelves (for clean laundry), push and pull drawer (above the shelves), separate enclosed container (for dirty laundry), 2 removable-washable plastic bags (secured on both sides, for towels and cloths), bucket, storage tray, waste separation baskets (each accessed separately), as well as ability to lock the trolley via RFID chip.

The AIDA ship's namesake is the 2023-built Silver Nova ( Silversea ).

In 2022, AIDAnova's powerplant was retrofitted to be able to use electricity generated by the methanol-powered fuel cell system developed by Freudenberg e-Power Systems (Freudenberg Fuel Cell e-Power Systems GmbH), which is part of Freudenberg Group (1849-founded, Weinheim-based, family-owned group of technology and production companies specializing in household products, textiles, building materials, auto parts, telecommunications).

Inaugural itineraries 2018

In February 2018 was announced that AIDAnova will offer new ("premier cruise") itineraries scheduled prior to the maiden voyage on Dec 2nd.

All premiere voyages ("mini-cruises") were open for booking on February 1, 2018.

The first 4-day itinerary was scheduled to depart on November 15th (right after the ship's delivery) from Oslo to Hamburg (arriving on November 19th).

Next short cruises were planned to depart from Hamburg to either Oslo Norway or Rotterdam Holland .

The following table shows the "Inaugural Cruise" (maiden voyage, itinerary 2018) 7-day "Kanaren und Madeira". Prices started from USD 625 pp (double-occupancy inside cabin rates).

Next tables show the inaugural cruises updated in November 2018 (following the delay).

AIDAnova and AIDAcosma are 37 meters longer than their previously commissioned sister ships AIDAprima and AIDAperla. The bed capacity has increased to 5.464 guest beds with double occupancy. Compared to the AIDAperla, this is an increase of 2.178 beds.

AIDAcosma offers 2.732 cabins and suites. Guests can choose from 21 cabin variants. The offer ranges from the single inside cabin with ten square meters to the five-person penthouse suite with a size of 73 square meters and a 20 square meter veranda.

The cabins are tastefully decorated and homely; there is enough storage space. Red or blue tones are the dominant color tones. The size of the bathrooms within the standard categories is sufficient. In cabins with a walk-in closet, which we used, the wet cells are smaller due to the design.

Standard cabin guests, on the other hand, only see their cabin steward once a day. This service, which is limited compared to well-known competitors, does not appear to cause any problems for loyal AIDA customers.

Gastronomy – Food on board the AIDAcosma

A cruise ship with more than 5.000 guests inevitably offers a variety of dining options. The AIDAcosma has a total of 17 restaurants and snack bars. On the ship, the shipping company definitely practices what it advertises: "enjoyment for advanced users". Compared to the older AIDA ships, the extended range of restaurants on the AIDAcosma is a significant step forward. And the quality of the food is to be commended.

There are three restaurant categories:

Buffet restaurants

The following generally applies to AIDA buffet restaurants: food and some drinks are included in the cruise price. Coffee, beer and wine specialties are served at an additional cost. Seat reservations are not possible.

The Bella Donna is Italian. If you use the spacious restaurant, which seats around 800 people, you won't make a mistake.

AIDAcosma - Bella Donna Restaurant

The Fuego is a family restaurant with an attached children's buffet and baby bistro. The Fuego, turbulent at certain times of the day, is the hip “dining room” for burgers, pizza & Co. Opening times: 12:00pm to 18:00pm

The meals are served at the seat. Drinks require co-payments. The restaurants are significantly smaller than those previously mentioned. Reservation is advised.

That up AIDAcosma The restaurant introduced for the first time advertises its light, summery cuisine. The Beach House can accommodate a maximum of 110 guests. The show kitchen delivers dishes named after well-known international port cities. At the Beach House we were reminded of restaurants in Florida. In fact, AIDA Cruises locates the restaurant in coastal regions of California.

The stylish brasserie French Kiss, which seats 110, presents selected French specialties. For guests who like it stylish: Breakfast is served on etageres at the table. Visually, the restaurant is an asset to the ship. Unfortunately, the restaurant is in a transit area. Especially the guests placed in the aisle area have to put up with a lot of unrest. Incidentally, this also applies to other, smaller restaurants placed in passageways.

Notable bars and lounges on AIDAcosma

Sea voyages and a lot of free time promote thirst. The shipping company speaks of 17 bars and lounges on board the AIDAcosma. We didn't count them. Some speak to us; others less. But as we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We present some of the bars divided by deck.

There are four bars on the 6th deck. It's them

  • Art Bar – a bar establishment embedded in the Art Gallery. We prefer the Art Bar for its mostly quiet atmosphere;
  • Cosma Bar – the central bar at the Theatrium. Cheers and hustle and bustle are guaranteed;
  • Rossini Bar – the appendage of the gourmet restaurant of the same name;
  • Tokyo Bar - It is located at the Sushi House.

AIDAcosma - Art Bar

They're on this deck

  • French Kiss Bar – French charm next to the French Kiss brasserie;
  • Lanai Bar - an attractive, wind-protected outdoor bar with awnings on the aft deck;
  • Loge 7 Bar – another bar in the vicinity of the Theatrium;
  • Rock Box Bar - Pub atmosphere with live music, mostly rock.

AIDAcosma - French Kiss Bar

This deck is home to the following bars and cafes:

  • Café Mare - the coffee bar originates from a cooperation with Starbucks;
  • Ice bar – home-made ice cream and other items are available for a fee;
  • Vinothek - the elegant, somewhat chilled place for wine connoisseurs and lovers.

The three decks provide the

  • Ocean Bar - the outdoor bar on the Ocean Deck; (deck 16);
  • AIDA Bar - the proven star-shaped bar in the Beach Club (deck 17);
  • Pool Bar - facing the sun (deck 18).

Sport and wellness

Ships, whose number of passengers corresponds to the population of a small town, offer their guests a wide range of sports and wellness offers. There is not nearly enough space to present all the content in detail. We limit ourselves to the essentials.

The large gym on the 8th deck is excellently designed. Athletes can choose from more than 30 offers. A small selection: fitness checks, fitness courses, cardiovascular training, muscle building training, private training sessions, indoor cycling. Some of the courses and services are chargeable. The outdoor sports area with the fitness track, a large miniature golf course and a bouldering wall is also attractive. Around 120 bamboo bicycles are used on AIDAcosma for cycling excursions.

AIDAcosma - sports studio

With the Racer and the Water Slide, AIDAnova has two remarkable water slides. The entrance to the water slides is on the 20th deck. The outlets are on the 17th deck.

The spacious sun decks deserve an appreciation. In addition to many loungers, there are cabanas for daydreaming and lounging on sea days with good weather.

AIDAcosma - sun deck with pool

The wellness area of the AIDAcosma measures more than 3.500 square meters. It is located forward on decks 7 and 8. Five different types of saunas, three jacuzzis, a fireplace room, a warming room called "tepidarium" and two private wellness suites are available. The more than 80 treatments offered are as diverse as the day is long. Remarkable are the limitation of the number of guests and the minimum age from 16 years. Which doesn't mean anything: During our visit to the spa, we met children in the spa.

The shipping company promises world-class entertainment in 360° format. This means above all the three-storey theatrium between decks 6 to 8. Other event areas are the Studio X, the Beach Club and the stage of the brewery. Entertainment formats specially developed for AIDA are the TV shows "Who knows something like that?" and "Who wants to be a millionaire?". The various entertainment options range from AIDA boccia all day to whiskey tasting.

The one that offers space for 1.100 guests Theatrium plays a key role in entertainment. The shipping company offers its guests a total of five shows over the course of the season.

This was the first time on the AIDAnova  STUDIO X launched as a TV studio at sea. The AIDAcosma cannot do without this studio either. It offers space for 500 studio guests. The productions are broadcast on board TV. From time to time the STUDIO X serves as a film stage.

High above the Theatrium, in the middle part of the AIDAcosma, on the 17th deck are the  AIDA Beach Club and on the 18th deck its gallery. During the day there is a relaxed beach atmosphere. In the evenings, the Beach Club turns into a party zone with live music, silent party and LED and laser shows.

AIDAcosma - Beach Club

The Cube , the exclusive lounge, bar and nightclub, is the only place on board where the partying goes on well into the night; a hotspot for night owls. During the day the club is a studio for cocktail and dance workshops. We cannot see The Cube as the club is still closed due to the Corona Pandemic in early April 2022.

Cruise ships are a suitable place to bring art to art lovers. A suitable means to an end is the  AIDA art gallery  on the 6th deck. For copyright reasons, we refrain from depicting the art objects.

It's on deck 7  On-board casino . The relatively small slot machine casino is moderately frequented on sea days and in the evenings. The size and visitor frequency cannot be compared to US ships by far.

AIDA cruise ships are family ships. On the AIDAcosma, children and young people are offered enough entertainment and activities. On deck 16 are the Mini Club, the Kids Club, the Fun Park Kids and the Teens' Wave Club.

AIDAcosma - Kids Pool

This is next to the Wave Club Game Center . The "Daddelbude" shines with various electronic games and finds fans among young and old.

Cruise ships are generally a thorn in the side of environmentalists. Above all, ships of the older generation are rightly classified as environmental pollution, since the burning of heavy fuel oil causes serious damage to the environment and health.

As far as this topic is concerned, the AIDAcosma and her sister ship AIDAnova are considered to be flagship ships for environmental protection and energy efficiency. The dual-fuel ship engines are operated 100 percent with LNG liquefied natural gas at sea and in port; provided it is available. When using LNG, emissions of particulate matter and sulfur oxides are largely avoided. The emission of nitrogen oxides and CO2 emissions are measurably reduced. The device for receiving shore power is also to be commended. Dark exhaust plumes above the chimney system are therefore not visible on AIDAcosma. Further technical improvements were made in the hydrodynamics of the underwater hull, heat recovery and water purification.

AIDAcosma tested cruise practice at the beginning of April 2022 on one of the 7-day “Metropolises from Hamburg” cruise scheduled before the ship’s christening. Port of departure and destination: Hamburg. The ship was steering Southampton , Le Havre and Zeebrugge at. The destination Rotterdam was cancelled. The trip was supported by AIDA Cruises. Our thanks go to the shipping company. With regard to our journalistic independence, we refer to the chapter “We are independent”.

With the last two new buildings AIDAnova and AIDAcosma, AIDA Cruises present what we believe to be the most successful cruise ships in the current fleet of 13 ships.

Like the AIDAnova, AIDAcosma is a further development of the AIDAprima and AIDAperla introduced in 2016 and 2017. Compared to the two predecessor ships, the ships of the Helios class have increased noticeably in size. Passengers should be able to accept more than 5.000 accompanying adults and many accompanying children during seasonal periods. And they should recognize that AIDA cruise ships are family ships by the shipping company's definition. We "cruised" together with 4.141 passengers, including around 1.300 children of all ages. The time on board gave us the opportunity to get to know AIDAcosma in detail. Our main impressions are:

The brand new ship is in excellent condition.

The cabin service, which is only offered once a day, should meet the needs of AIDA's regular customers. However, we would like to see our cabin steward twice a day.

The variety of restaurants and bars is remarkable and to be commended. There is nothing wrong with the quality and the taste of the food. The service in general also leaves nothing to be desired.

AIDAcosma - culinary delights

AIDAcosma - culinary delights

The range of entertainment, how could it be otherwise with AIDA Cruises, satisfies many tastes. From our point of view, there is a lack of qualitative musical entertainment. These may be late effects of the corona epidemic. We're used to better content from international ships, and we're happy to do without quiz shows.

AIDAcosma - Environment Theatrium

AIDAcosma - Environment Theatrium

AIDA Cruises advertises AIDAcosma as a family ship. And in fact, families with small children, parents and grandparents are not uncommon. We observe strange behavior from the parents. We cannot explain why unaccompanied small children are running around in the theater or other public areas at 23:30pm Unaccompanied small children in elevators or on bar stools are no exception. Children's screams fill the restaurants and bars. – When it comes to such behavior, we recommend that the shipping company follow the example of its English sister brand P&O Cruises. Children are also welcome there. After 18:00pm they only appear when accompanied by adults.

On the generously dimensioned ship there are no suitable retreats outside of your own cabin to escape the noise.

In times of the rampant omicron variant of the corona virus, we miss compliance with strict rules of conduct. It is true that masks are compulsory in public areas, and the capacities for maintaining distance are reduced in the restaurants. Self-service is standard at the buffets. Those responsible at AIDAcosma are of the opinion that there would only be brief meetings at the self-service buffets. We think that AIDA Cruises - as far as this is concerned - overestimates the consideration of fellow passengers.

Despite the negative points of criticism, we enjoyed our stay on the AIDAcosma. As a cruise ship, it sets standards in every respect.
