Symphony is the first Feadship to pass the 100 metre mark. Working with acclaimed designer Tim Heywood and in-house De Voogt Naval Architects, Feadship launched Symphony into both the water, and the Top 100, in 2015.

This superyacht provides more space for guests on board due to its compliance with a new level of Passenger Yacht Code regulations. Where 12 guests would be the maximum, Symphony welcomes 16 underway and a crew of 28 with ample space due to a beam of 14.10m (46’3”).

Her six decks offer up an incredible amount of space for exciting design and technical elements, such as a fully operational helipad for one. From the top, her sun deck features an observation lounge, bar and Jacuzzi, while the bridge deck offers a large terrace with outdoor cinema. Her dedicated owner’s deck is equipped with double bathrooms, dressing rooms and a sauna, a forward terrace with Jacuzzi, a private office and a study, a lounge and a spacious aft deck area for lounging with a dining table for twenty.

The features continue throughout with a 6 metre contraflow swimming pool complete with waterfall. Moving toward the lower deck, an ultra-high definition cinema, lounge and glass-bottomed swimming pool.

Inside SYMPHONY: Bernard Arnault's $150 Million Yacht

Fashion billionaire Bernard Arnault's superyacht SYMPHONY is the definition of luxury sailing.

Quick Links

Ownership of the symphony, features of the superyacht, additional amenities and specifications.

French businessman, investor, and art collector Bernard Arnault is the chairman and chief executive of the world's largest luxury goods company, LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton. He is currently the third richest person in the world and the richest person in Europe. The French fashion tycoon is one the world's ultimate taste-makers and his ownership of the super yacht Symphony is a proof that he likes the combination of class and beauty which comes with a price. With the billions of wealth he has accumulated over the years, it is not at all surprising that he bought a luxury yacht.

Bernard Arnault is the proud owner of the largest Feadship to be ever made according to the Yacht Habor. The CEO of the French multinational luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH, owns the luxury mega yacht which is worth $150 million. It is not surprising that Bernard Arnault would spend so much for a luxury yacht since he has a stunning net worth of $93.5 billion and currently among the top ten billionaires in the world and recognized as the richest man in France.

Arnault first ventured into the yacht industry back in 2008 when he led the acquisition of the British yacht manufacturer called Princess Yachts. Since then LVMH has been working closely with the world leading brand of custom-built luxury mega-yachts, Feadship. It was in 2015 when Arnault decided to buy Symphony for $150 million. The super yacht has about estimated running costs of $10 to 15 million per year and currently not available for charter.

The Superyacht Symphony comes with eight huge staterooms that can fit about sixteen guests and a comfortable berthing that can accommodate about 27 crew members on board the yacht. It also has a private deck for the owner. It is created to accommodate about thirty six passengers. The exteriors of the yacht were designed by the world class renowned company Tim Heywood Design. The interiors on the other hand were aesthetically designed with the décor of the yacht being done by the one and only Zuretti Interior Design. The Symphony has been constructed by the Feadship at the Royal Van Lent Shipyard as a simple Project 808.

The luxury yacht is currently among the most sought-after private vessels . Bernard Arnault’s luxury vehicle at the sea is far more than par excellence. It is powered by a 2,415 hp Wärtsilä engine which comes with a powerful battery bank and about three generator sets. It also houses the string of amenities of the yacht such as the appointed entertainment areas, the al fresco bar area for parties and events and the state-of-the-art kitchen that is serving stunning decadent French delights. It is also a 101-meter luxury yacht that was built at the Royal Van Lent Shipyard. Symphony has a steel hull that has an aluminum superstructure. The yacht has complied with the amended Passenger Yacht Code (PYC).

The luxury yacht is said to be an eco-friendly yacht which uses a hybrid propulsion technology and powered by a 4x MTU 16V4000M73 engine. Due to the advance hybrid propulsion technology, the yacht can store energy in its battery bank that can work together with its diesel engines. The main engine on the other hand works hand in hand with the generators and modern battery bank that were attached to the yacht. It uses about 30% less than the energy that a normal yacht uses. The maximum speed of the yacht is about 21 knots and the cruising speed is about 10 knots. The Symphony was ranked 50 th out of the top 100 superyacht around the world with a 101.5 meter six deck. The structure of the yacht was made by the De Voogt Naval Architects. The floors and ceilings of the yacht are encased in a light wood panel which was complemented by the w ooden furniture with accents of gold and natural tones .

The Symphony contains luxury features such as the 6 meter glass-bottom swimming pool located on the main deck, an outdoor cinema that was aesthetically placed on the bridge deck and a stunning Jacuzzi on the yacht’s sundeck. The owner’s deck is also equipped with two bathrooms, sauna, forward terrace that has a Jacuzzi as well, a private office space, a spacious lounge and dressing rooms. Since the wife of Arnault, Helene Mercier, is a concert pianist, there is also a piano on board. The owner’s deck also has deck area perfect for lounging with a dining table that can accommodate about 20 people. It also has two elevators for passengers to use and one elevator even features a 15-metre interactive video screen which can play video footages upon the request of the guests.

Dream Symphony: Inside the 10-year build of the world's biggest sailing yacht

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Announced in 2010, the 141 metre sailing superyacht Dream Symphony was revealed with a number of groundbreaking promises. The four-masted schooner-rigged sailing yacht, currently in build at Dream Ship Victory’s yard in Bozburun, Turkey, would become the largest sailing yacht in the world when launched.

Constructed entirely from wood, epoxy laminated iroko to be precise, it would also break numerous engineering feats. RINA was approached to certify construction, but there was a problem - it had never certified any wooden structure measuring over 30m in length.

This resulted in a scientific research project spearheaded by designer Dykstra Naval Architects , which involved composite experts and extensive tests undertaken by Italian universities and Dutch laboratories. By the end of the process, RINA was satisfied and construction on the truly unique project began, with the keel laid in 2011.

Since then, progress on the project has stalled and now Burgess is seeking a new owner to bring the yacht to completion. Luckily, the project isn’t shy of unique selling points. For starters, it's designed by Dykstra and Ken Freivokh – who also worked on the 106m Black Pearl and 88m Maltese Falcon But unlike Black Pearl and Maltese Falcon , both of which are constructed from steel and aluminium, Dream Symphony features a unique all-wood construction providing a "warmer environment”, as well as being renewable and recyclable, according to Burgess.

While the original concept, according to Freivokh, called for “a very traditional schooner in terms of the rig”, the layout of the interior was less conventional. In fact the interior concept was almost completely created around a “very private owner’s quarters”.

Split across two levels with an atrium and spiral staircase, this dedicated apartment includes a bedroom, bathroom, and private lounge on the lower deck while an adjoining saloon and office sit on the main deck above. “The owner almost has the whole rear section to themselves”, Freivokh says. The rest of the accommodation sits on the lower deck and sleeps 16 guests in eight cabins, including two VIPs, three doubles, one twin and two convertible rooms.

Elsewhere, the yacht features a convertible conservatory located between the owner’s living quarters and the main lobby, which can be closed at the “touch of a button”, according to Freivokh. Areas like this were key to the owner’s brief of having “the feeling of being outside while being inside”. Elsewhere, the yacht features a double-height swimming pool on the aft deck, complete with a rising bottom that transforms into a dancefloor or helipad.

The extensive list of amenities also includes meeting rooms and a large spa, with hair and nail salons, a massage room and a gym. Burgess sums it up neatly. “The sheer scale of Project Dream Symphony is jaw-dropping.”

While construction has been stalled for some time, Freivokh reports that the hull is now “pretty much complete”. It hasn’t been completely mothballed either, with the yard using a “skeleton crew” to keep work ticking over. “They are keeping it in very good condition”, he adds. For now though, the search for a new owner to finally complete this record-breaking project continues. “When she does launch,” Burgess adds, “she will redefine superyacht sailing for the modern age in a way that honours the past and acknowledges the future.”

Building the largest sailing yacht in the world

Published 12 April 2021

At 141m (462.6ft), the sheer scale of Project DREAM SYMPHONY is jaw dropping, the engineering involved is ground breaking, and when a new owner is found and she sets sail, she will have pushed back the technical boundaries of yacht classification.

Currently in build at Dream Ship Victory's yard in Bozburun,  Turkey , is a sailing yacht project of quite staggering scale. DREAM SYMPHONY is a 141m (462.6ft) four-masted schooner-rigged sailing yacht. To put that in context, the largest sailing yacht under canvas today is the 106m (347.8ft) BLACK PEARL. DREAM SYMPHONY is over 30 percent longer - indeed she is only 1.8m (5.8ft) away from equalling the world's longest masted vessel, the sail assisted motor yacht A. Length, however, is only part of this story's ambition, as we will discover.

A natural solution

The yacht features hull design and engineering by Dykstra Naval Architects and interiors by Ken Freivokh, the same team that imagined BLACK PEARL and the 88m (288.6ft) MALTESE FALCON. However, whereas BLACK PEARL, A and MALTESE FALCON all feature steel and aluminium construction, DREAM SYMPHONY is being constructed from an entirely natural material: wood. Epoxy laminated iroko to be specific.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

The use of wood was quite deliberate. It is entirely renewable and recyclable, it provides a warmer environment and, correctly constructed, a vessel of equal or even greater strength compared to steel and aluminium yachts.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

The yard approached RINA to certify construction and there they ran into a problem: RINA had never certified any wooden structure over 30m in length. There followed an exacting scientific research project managed by Dykstra Naval Architects, involving composite experts SP-High Modulus, now Gurit, and exhaustive testing by laboratories at the Delft University of Technology in Holland and Italy's University of Messina. The results satisfied RINA to certify construction and the build began.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

'Unique design'

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Comfortably creative

Freivokh's interior, a contemporary interpretation of traditional nautical stylings, is designed to enhance the warm ambience of wood and echo the historical importance of wood as a vessel building material. The result is universal in its appeal and understated in its magnificence, celebrating the space.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Key features include and two deck atrium with a spiral staircase and an owner's duplex apartment with bedroom, bathroom and private lounge on the lower deck and the saloon and office on the main deck. A 'convertible conservatory' creates an all weather winter garden between the owner's living quarters and the main lobby.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

Other features include a circular double height glass swimming pool on the aft deck, with a bottom that rises to serve as a dancefloor for entertainment purposes or as a helipad. She also has meeting rooms, spa facilities with hair and nail salons and a massage room, and a gym.

SYMPHONY - Building the largest sailing yacht in the world.

A new age awaits

Construction is currently on hold as she is looking for a new owner but when she does launch, she will redefine superyacht sailing for the modern age in a way that honours the past and acknowledges the future. Sleek, stylish and outstandingly impressive, she will be an utterly unmistakable feature in the finest destinations around the world.
