Mykonos yacht charters.

Boats moored at Mykonos marina

Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.

Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach  to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .

Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters

Beautiful lake in Vouliagmeni

A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.

Santorini Yacht Charters

View of colorful houses in Oia, Greece

A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of  Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.

Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.

Five Reasons to Visit Santorini on a Luxury Yacht Charter

Hydra Yacht Charters

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.

Milos Yacht Charters

Kleftiko Bay, Greece

The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.

The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach  (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

Greece yacht charter

Greece is a world-class, yachting destination. With an archipelago that boasts volcanic islands on the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, discover ancient cities, cliff-backed beaches, secret coves, and remarkable historical sites. Every year, boats of all sizes and shapes flock to Greece for stunning Grecian vacations with unparalleled experiences. To charter a yacht in Greece is truly a phenomenal holiday you shouldn't miss.

How much to charter a yacht in Greece?

Greece is blessed with beautiful weather year-round, and thousands of kilometers of coastline. With this, hundreds of yachts visit and enjoy the summer holidays, hopping from one Grecian island to another. Every type of yacht can be found on Greece's harbors and marinas, which means you'll have many yacht charters to choose from. A sailboat is perfect for anyone who wants a more classical and exhilarating cruise on the Aegean Sea. A 196-foot sailboat with five cabins can cost around $298,000 for a week's rent. A 45-foot catamaran, on the other hand, with two cabins for a small group of 4 adults, can cost about $15,000 per week. Furthermore, a luxury motor yacht that's 160 feet in length and having seven cabins can cost around $170,000 for a week's rent.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Greece?

There are three different island groups in Greece that offer the most spectacular yacht charter holidays. These are the Ionian Islands, the Argo-Saronic Islands, and the Cyclades. The Ionian Islands are found to the west of Greece and feature 12 islands and islets. They may up 6 archipelagos, Confu, Paxi, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaki, and Kefalonia. With charming villages, a bohemian vibe, and picturesque beaches, you will find this island group's undeniable beauty breathtaking and spectacular.

The Argo-Saronic Islands offer a sheltered location and breathtaking natural scenery. Its closeness to Athens, being only 12 nautical miles away, makes it one of Greece's most visited yacht charter destinations. The Islands consist of Agistri, Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Salamina, and plenty of other worthwhile islands to explore. With natural anchorages, water sports activities on the islands reign supreme. And with ancient ruins, historical monuments, as well as a great collection of bars, restaurants, and boutique shops, get to enjoy the best of both worlds on board your very own luxury yacht floating around the islands.

And of course, a trip to Greece must never end without a yacht charter to the Cyclades Islands. Located in the south of Greece, this island group is the most popular and most visited. With islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, these islands make up the quintessential Grecian islands. There are 39 islands in the Cyclades, with only 24 being inhabited. The most popular are Mykonos, Santorini, Delos, Paros, and Sifnos.

Mykonos is best known for its lively nightlife, but during the day, you can visit the splendid golden beaches, the scenery, the quiet and peace, and beautiful architecture across the island. Santorini is the most visited of all the islands in the Cyclades, and for a good reason. Santorini is world-famous for being the picture-perfect Grecian island with white-washed houses featuring blue roofs and shutters, and narrow and winding alleys. And with the blue waters of the Aegean Sea as the perfect view, Santorini is undoubtedly spellbinding. Other islands to enjoy are Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, with ancient temples, such as the Temple of Apollo, as well as the Temple of the Goddess Dimitra in Saggri.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Greece?

When it comes to luxury yacht charters, nothing beats Athens in terms of offering yacht charter itineraries. With several luxury marinas such as the Flisvos Marina, which is the only marina in Greece to be awarded the 5 Gold Anchor designation, Athens is the perfect jumping-off point to the rest of the Grecian islands. And of course, it doesn't hurt that the famous city features gourmet restaurants, designer shops, and tailor-made luxury tours to start your yacht charter holiday.

Corfu Island comes in a close second for luxury yacht charters in Greece. With the Gouvia Marina, you are welcomed into the gateway to the Adriatic. With a cosmopolitan appeal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and plenty of secluded beaches to call your own, Corfu is an ideal luxury yacht charter destination. And if you want accessibility with your luxury yacht charter, Rhodes Island features a marina that is the biggest on the Dodecanese islands. The island has its international airport, with direct flights to international destinations. The marina itself offers a quiet and safe harbor, as well as VIP services.

Greece is a dream yacht charter destination. With incredible cuisine, enchanting volcanic islands with quaint and charming hilltop towns, and of course, exquisite natural beauty, a yacht charter in Greece is the best way to truly capture the country's beauty and timeless charm.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

“We had a great time in Greece”

We had a great time in Greece, the first three days we had constant 20-25knots of wind, so we were able to do a lot of sailing. The boat was also in good condition and everything in working order…the boat did however look a bit older than a 2018 mode…

Greece Yacht Charters

Greece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course.

The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure.

Sailing Conditions in Greece

Being situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island.

Best Times for Vacation in Greece

Having an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing.

Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Greece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions.

If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price.

Main Charter Bases

Greece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:

  • Santorini  and many others

Boat Types for Charters

Having a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding.

Other Information about Greece Sailing

  • Greece is the Euro zone; that’s why the official currency is Euro.

Best time to visit

Best time to charter to greece.

Greece's allure as a yacht charter destination lies in its stunning islands, azure waters, and climate. To truly make the most of your sailing experience, it's essential to understand the nuances of Greece's seasonal variations.

Peak Season (May to September):

This period, especially July and August, marks the high season in Greece. The weather is at its finest: warm temperatures, clear blue skies, and consistent sailing winds, especially in the Cyclades. It's an excellent time for sun-seekers, with long daylight hours and warm waters for swimming and snorkeling.

However, being the most popular months, marinas and popular spots like Mykonos and Santorini can be crowded. While this vibrant atmosphere can entice many, it can also mean higher prices for island services and accommodations.

Shoulder Seasons (April-May and September-October):

The months flanking the peak season are equally delightful, offering a balanced blend of good weather and relatively fewer crowds. The mild and pleasant temperatures and the sea remains warm enough for water activities.

Those who seek a more tranquil experience often favor this period, with easier mooring options and less bustling ports. Plus, many cultural events and local festivals happen during these months, immersing visitors in authentic Greek culture.

Off-Peak Season (November to March):

Greece's winter is milder than many European countries, but the colder sea temperatures and unpredictable weather can make it less ideal for sailing. However, this time is perfect for those who wish to explore Greece's historical and cultural landmarks without the distraction of larger tourist crowds. The main cities, like Athens and Thessaloniki, have a unique charm during these months, with local life taking center stage.

As noted, during the off-peak season, many island amenities, accommodations, and transport options operate on reduced schedules or might be closed. If chartering during this time, ensure to plan your itinerary and provisions meticulously.

In summary, while the peak season offers the quintessential sunny Greek experience, the shoulder and off-peak seasons have their unique charms. Your decision should align with your preferences, whether it's bustling beach parties, serene sunsets, or cultural explorations.

Cyclades – the most popular island region of the greek seas.

The Cyclades islands, located in the Aegean Sea, and the most popular islands in this region are Mykonos and Santorini , which are known for their vibrant landscapes, picturesque charming villages, and stunning beaches. The main port and city is Zakynthos Town, with restaurants on the port front, an abundance of moorings, and shops to explore on a Greece yacht charter.

Zakynthos is most well known for Shipwreck Beach (Navagio Beach), which is a white sand beach with a rusted shipwreck. Greece Yacht or Catamaran Charter: The Best Companies

Greece and its array of sun-kissed islands offer endless opportunity for yachting adventures, with a wide selection of companies offering private yacht charter deals in this part of the Mediterranean.

The nation known as the “cradle of Western Civilization” carries with it a sense of mystery and allure that attracts a steady stream of visitors from far and wide throughout the year. Greece is particularly popular with private yacht charter clients, thanks to its seemingly never-ending blue skies and shimmering turquoise waters making for idyllic cruising grounds. Below are 3 of the best companies for booking memorable sailing holidays in Greece.

Ritzy Charters

Billed as a “trusted community marketplace” for yacht rental deals, Ritzy Charters is our favourite resource for crewed yachts in Greece. The company offers a huge variety of crewed yachts across several categories, including motorboat, catamaran and sailbost charter. According to our searches, the cheapest available boat currently listed for charter in Greece is priced at €3,500 per week, which gets you a 19.5-metre sailboat charter yacht that sleeps six and has a crew of two.  There are also 84 catamaran charter options. The booking process itself is intuitive and simple – all you do is fill in some key details about your trip, including number of guests, dates, preferred itinerary and special requests, then you ask for a quote and wait for the company to send back a short-list of vessels based on your requirements.

Book at Ritzy Charters

A leading player in peer-to-peer boat rentals, SamBoat makes the rental process simple. You search for boats according to rates, size, travel dates and other requirements, then when you’ve picked out an available vessel that suits your tastes and needs you send a booking request to the owner. If accepted, you pay for the rental online, deposited to the owner on  day one of your rental. When the day comes, you board the boat and make sure it corresponds to the descriptions before signing on the dotted line and heading off on your charter adventure. When we searched for charters in Greece, we found hundreds of vessels available (both crewed yacht and bareboat charter) with the majority being motorboats and sailboats. Prices started at just $47 per week for a 5-person fibreglass Centre Console vessel that’s available bareboat.

SamBoat.com

A few years ago the influential Conde Naste Traveller magazine described Sailo as “the Airbnb of boats and yachts”, and a peruse of their website soon tells you why. Sailo are an international luxury yacht charter company that allows boat owners and renters to find charter companies and their vessels. Visitors can pick from thousands of uncrewed and crewed yachts based on date, location, price, size, and user reviews, and you can also create bespoke searches based on your specific trip preferences. When we looked for  yacht charters in Greece, we found hundreds of vessels, all available bareboat. If you’re looking specifically for a catamaran, then Sailo also impress with 161 available in total.

  • need a guide to be with them and show the best coves and secluded bays for moorage and/or swimming, as well as the best places in seaside villages to eat and drink
  • want to relax and enjoy leaving the helm and sails in the hands of someone who can be trusted

Our skippers are hospitable, friendly, discrete and knowledgeable about every destination and you will discuss together your preferences and plan your route. Choosing a skippered yacht charter, you also hire the skipper who will take care of the yacht for you and will ensure that you get the most out of your sailing holidays in Greece. When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

The Greek unspoiled coastline and offshore islands have so many spectacular spots to visit that it is a natural start to any itinerary. Skippered yacht charter in Greece is all about your own private cruise where you can plan your own itinerary and visit exactly the places and attractions you want, from some of the world’s few truly iconic destinations to serene coves that are not accessible by land.

Something special

High season temperatures range - the Ionian is generally milder (high 20s C), while the Aegean side, can get fiercely hot, well into the mid-30s C. A/C needed!

The winds vary across the different regions. Generally in peak season, the calmest region is the Ionian, while the Cyclades are the windiest group, ideal for more experienced sailors.

The Greek sailing season runs April to October – the best weather is from May to September, except July and August, when the islands can get busy, and winds strong!

Greece, like most Mediterranean yacht charter destinations, is part of the eurozone, and so the Euro is the only currency you'll need when in Greek waters.

Best towns to start a yacht charter in Greece

Best areas in Greece

Broadly speaking, the Greek islands are scattered across two large seas - the Ionian in the NW and the Aegean in the SE. These are then divided into six primary sailing areas:

  • North Ionian
  • South Ionian
  • Saronic Gulf

The Ionian Sea's main charter yacht bases are Corfu (north) and Lefkas (south), while the huge Aegean is split into smaller regions - the Saronic Gulf, Argolic Gulf and Cyclades islands, centerd around the Athens peninsula; the Sporades and Argolic Gulf, where you charter from Skiathos or Volos; and the Dodecanese, which have Kos and Rhodes at their heart.

Wherever you go, you're sure to enjoy secluded bays, your pick of sandy beach, and some of the best sailing available in this jewel of the east Mediterranean.

The Cyclades and Saronic Gulf

The cradle of Western civilisation, Athens is the biggest sailing center in the Mediterranean Sea, with access to the Saronic Gulf and Cyclades Islands. If you wish to head west into the Saronic Gulf, Alimos is a useful base from which to charter a yacht, while Lavrion Main Port and Lavrion Olympic marinas on the south of the Athenian Peninsula are the best jumping off points for a yacht charter in the Cyclades island chain.

Why sail here?

  • Ancient ruins and historic UNESCO sites
  • Exhilarating sailing for expert sailors
  • Picturesque cultural hubs & exciting nightlife
  • Famous islands including Mykonos, Santorini, Hydra and Spetses

The Cyclades are generally the windiest Greek island group, and is home to the legendary summer Meltemi wind, which can reach 40 knots in August and provides some exhilarating sailing for experienced bareboaters, but can be quite ferocious. We do not advise beginners to go to the Cyclades in the summer.

Beginners, families and less experienced sailors are better off sailing the Saronic Gulf and enjoying a relaxing week aboard. Thanks to the shape of the Attica peninsula, the Saronic Gulf is much more sheltered from the NE Meltemi, but can still offer some fun sailing to beautiful islands like Hydra and Spetses.

These sailing areas off the Athens peninsula displays lots of evidence of Athenian relics here with this area offering a mix of coastal sailing and Greek island hopping. Mykonos is also which has a great mix on nightlife and excellent food.

Alimos Marina is just a 45 minute taxi ride from Athens International Airport, and has over 1,000 charter yachts ready to explore the Saronic islands. At the southern tip of the Attica peninsula, Lavrion Olympic Marina and Lavrion Main Port are each just a 30-minute taxi from the airport and perfect for Cyclades yacht charters.

You can also fly direct from the UK to Mykonos or Paros, if your charter starts in the Cyclades islands themselves.

Dodecanese Islands

The Dodecanese islands are the most SE Greek islands, just off the alluring Turkish coast.

  • Consistent NW sailing wind
  • Great for intermediate/advanced sailors
  • Mix of Ottoman, Turkish, Venetian influences
  • Longer sailing season than the rest of Greece

Kos and Rhodes Marina are home to most of the region’s charter yachts bases, from where you can head north to Kalymnos and Leros, or south to beautiful towns like Symi.

The Dodecanese sailing area benefits from the best of the prevailing NW winds, whose force has usually softened by the time it gets this far south, creating pleasant medium breezes for daytime sailing.

The sailing season is also longer here than any other part of Greece - spring arrives early, and the season can last into November, with the air temperature still in the 20s C in October.

You can fly direct to Kos or Rhodes from the UK from a number of airports.

The Ionian Sea

These lush, sheltered islands including Ithaca, Kefalonia and Corfu have easy and relaxing sailing conditions for your Greece yacht charter for most of the summer, thanks to the moderate wind.

  • Easy, rewarding sailing in flat waters
  • Light winds perfect for families and beginners
  • Short distances between beautiful islands filled with bougainvillea
  • Simple transport links and hundreds of boats to choose from

It’s famously claimed that you can set your watch to the wind in the Ionian, with barely a breath in the morning, gradually building to a mild afternoon sea breeze, with the best sailing conditions between 11am and 5pm, before the wind fades around sunset.

The Ionian's dense greenery means the land heats up slower, which creates less breeze than the more barren, windier Aegean.

The shape of the southern Ionian, sheltered by its largest islands (Lefkada and Kefalonia), also means that you’re almost always sailing in flat water.

From beautiful island to serious party towns and the iconic shipwreck beach, there are as many options for a boat rental vacation in Greece as you could possibly want.

There are direct flights from the UK to Corfu and Zakynthos. Getting to Lefkas marina involves flying into Preveza (PVK) and then taking a bus or taxi to the island - this is about half an hour on a good day. There are bridges so no need for any ferries

The Sporades

A collection of lush, traditional, laid back Greek islands clustered in the north Aegean, a yacht charter in the Sporades is like taking a step back in time.

  • Explore a National Marine Park
  • Visit Skopelos, setting of Mamma Mia!
  • Gin-clear water, great wind and beautiful beaches
  • Meet dolphins, monks seals and humpback whales

The Sporades islands are arguably Greece’s most beautiful sailing area, with abundant forests, uninhabited bays and colorful houses adorning the waterfront hills.

Tucked up in the armpit of Greece, the Sporades are on the whole much more flourishing and less windy than the Cyclades, with medium winds perfect for family sailing.

Visit remote Skopelos (famous setting of Mamma Mia!) and Alonnisos, a forested, hilly island with beautiful winding dirt roads that makes Skiathos look like bustling Kos.

The Sporades is blessed with abundant wildlife, and you're likely to see dolphins, monk seals and maybe even a humpback whale during your vacation!

Why Charter in Greece

Greece yacht charters offer unrivalled choice of bareboat, captained or fully crewed yacht charter options, with a full spectrum of wind, cuisine, nature available across the six primary sailing areas.

Where it comes to chartering a yacht in Greek waters, there's not much to worry about. Experienced sailors with the right licences can embrace the freedom of a bareboat charter, where they hire the boat without a skipper. If you don't have the right qualifications to do a bareboat yacht charter then there are skippered and even fully crewed options.

There are a variety of boats to hire too - you could wish to hire a catamaran, a monohull yacht or a motorboat charter. There are about as many options for yacht hire in Greece as there are sailing holiday budgets.

You will be limited as to how far you take your vessel, largely by the time you have on board. You will have to remember the local weather conditions - the famous katabatic Meltemi winds in the Aegean can be limiting too, especially in August.

Bareboat, captained yacht or crewed charter?

You don't need to know how to sail to rent a boat in Greece as you can go for a captained boat rental where the captain can get you wherever you want to go. If you're more confident and have the relevant licences, you can go for a bareboat rental. Captained charters are available on nearly all boats as an optional extra.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without captain depending on what you are looking for, and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rent

Yacht Charter Ibiza

Bareboat Yacht Charter Greece

Bareboat charters offer qualified and experienced sailors the ultimate freedom to explore where they want, when they want.

You are the captain, you plan the route, and you are ultimately responsible for the safety of the boat and all of your crew.

For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is lower cost and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests.

Many sailors prefer to helm the boat and choose their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 meters in length) yourself.

If you want to sail without a captain (bareboat yacht charter) then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or the ASA 104 Bareboat certificate.

Captained Yacht Charter Greece A captained yacht charter or crewed motor yacht will cost you a little more but you get the peace of mind of having someone aboard who knows the waters and can get you safely to all the destinations you want.

Where it comes to a captained boat rental for your sailing vacation, the captain will also know some of the best places to go to meet your needs.

Want lots quiet sandy beaches for a barbecue? How about the best Taverna in the area? The captain will know all this as well as where to land for the best afternoon, grazing on meze ('Greek Tapas') and ouzo.

Do you need a licence to charter in Greece?

If you are on a crewed charter, gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht. This is also the case when you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Greece, these include RYA Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best times to rent

The Greek yacht charter vacation season runs between April and October. As such it depends on when you are free through the year. Most people rent a boat during the summer school vacations, point to note here is the waters will be busier as this is high season

The Meltemi wind on the Aegean can be feisty in August but down on the Ionian the weather is quite stable throughout the summer months. Outside of the school vacations it can be cheaper to rent a boat and the waters will be less busy.

One month to consider also is April when the land is in full bloom, the pastures are green and the flowers color the land. The sea retains the sun's warmth so October can be cooler outside but it will still be comfortable to go swimming.

Our favorite months for Greece yacht charters are June and September

Symi-Dodecanese-Greece

The Climate

Where it comes to climate not all of Greece is the same all the time.

In summer on the Ionian Sea the Bora wind starts as a zephyr in the morning and builds to a nice Force 4-5 in the afternoon before calming again in the evening. If you want some great day sailing on deep blue waters then this can be just the fun you dreamed about at home.

On the Aegean it can get fiercely hot in the summer months with temperatures regularly getting well over 30 degrees C.

At the same time the north-easterly Meltemi wind can blow up to a Force 7 on the Aegean day and night. As a general rule it starts building from a light breeze at around dawn and reaches peak strength at around 13:00, only easing at around sunset, making for some exciting sailing conditions downwind but lumpy and wet when beating. In this area as a general rule, people prefer to leave the dock early in the morning to avoid the wind at peak strength

If very hot weather isn't your thing, then do consider going in Spring or Autumn when the temperatures can be far warmer than Northern Europe but still more comfortable.

How much does it cost for a Greece yacht charter?

Depending on the boat you're renting and the time of year you can pay anything from $700 a week to well over $20,000+ a week. These aren't the only things you need to consider when renting a boat.

Marinas will often charge around $20+ a night (but often less) and you will also have to pay to moor on a buoy in some anchorages. You will also need money for fuel for the vessel through the trip.

Many restaurants have their own pontoons, allowing you to moor for free if you have booked a table ahead. There are also plenty of opportunities to anchor just outside of marinas if they are full.

Along with food on board you'll typically need a budget for eating out. Greek food is world renowned and all types of budgets are catered for from great local taverna in a vacation town to a premium end meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

On a captained yacht charter you should remember to tip the captain on the boat for their work in helping you explore the country. You will be expected to supply the captain with their food too.

Other boating destinations you might like

Yacht charter Croatia

In Greece yacht charter is one of the premier tourist activities and as long as you and the boat owner meet local and international laws and regulations that come with boating then yes, it is perfectly legal.

You can rent almost any yacht that is licensed for charter you like, these include monohull yachts, catamarans, superyachts, luxury motorboats, ribs and day boats . If you are not qualified or confident you can ask for a captain and crew to sail it for you for an extra fee.

You need to consider your budget, where you want to go, what sailing qualifications and sailing experience you have and how long you want to go sailing for.

This depends on what you want. Do you want the hustle and bustle of party towns at full throttle? July and August will be the busiest times. Do you want to avoid the worst of the heat? It can pay to go in May or June. Outside the school vacations it is much quieter and cheaper.

In reservation the boat rental you will have to pay some of the charter fee upfront, this is typically 50% in advance. As part of the insurance requirements you will usually have to pay a returnable damage deposit to cover any damage you cause.

If you are at sea and cannot repair the issue yourself then you should call the authorities (Coastguard on VHF Ch16 in most cases or MAYDAY only in life threatening emergencies). If you have a mechanical fault at the dock, at anchor or at a buoy then you will have the contacts of the charter company to phone - speak to them and they will help you out.

Do you have the qualifications and confidence to sail a boat on your own? If not then consider a captained rent. Where do you want to sail? This will inform you what companies to go with and where you sail from. What time of year do you want to go? This will inform you what sort of clothes to bring - warmer for off-season and cooler for peak season.

If you are you are from a country within the European Union then you will not. People from many countries like Switzerland, Norway, Canada, the USA, New Zealand and Australia will also be allowed into Greece for a short time without a visa. Do check with the Greek Embassy website in your country before you book.

Yacht Charter in Greece – First-Timer’s Guide to a Sailing Holiday

best yacht charter in greece

Whether it’s during a holiday, retirement, or as a new hobby, many folks have fantasies of sailing off to beautiful destinations around the world. Always intrigued with the idea to charter a yacht in Greece, we jumped on the chance to sail with Seafarer Cruising and Sailing Holidays, the best yacht charter in Greece. As first-time sailors, we knew this would grant us the perfect opportunity to see what yacht life truly entailed.

For two weeks, we sailed around the Cyclades Islands in Greece. During this time, we documented our sailing adventures through daily vlogs. Our goal was to share everything that we learned to help others who are interested in sailing (especially first-time sailors), get the most from their holiday.

Why Sail Greece – Best Yacht Charter in Greece

Greece has approximately 6,000 islands and more than 10,000 miles of coastline! Sailing offered us a great opportunity to see more than just one or two major islands. In two weeks, we explored secluded bays and visited over ten different marinas.

When you’re ready to book your next flight, follow these three easy steps to get the best price.

Some of our favorite spots were the off-the-beaten-path destinations, such as the Little Cyclades and Serifos. You will miss so much of what Greece has to offer if you don’t get out onto the water.

best yacht charter in greece

In terms of chartering a yacht, passengers have two options: 1) charter the entire boat or 2) charter a boat with other passengers. While more costly, we prefer chartering the entire boat ourselves.

It’s such a freeing experience to have the boat all to yourself. And, you don’t have to worry about getting stuck with lame guests. For example, we took a day trip in Croatia on a 30′ motor yacht, and one of the other passengers didn’t seem to know the tour was going to take place on the water! With the first wave hitting the boat, she became immediately ill. Basically, the entire day was sort of ruined because the itinerary had to be adjusted for this one passenger.

We use this budget-savvy travel health insurance to protect our trips – get a quick quote .

We recommend that you charter through Sailo.com , it’s essentially the Airbnb of boating. You make your reservation directly with the owner of the boat. As a result, you get to charter nice yachts at very affordable prices. Here’s how:

  • Go to Sailo.com .
  • Click in the search box and type “Greece.”
  • Select your dates You may choose either a day trip, multiple days, or a weekly trip.
  • Next, you’ll be given a list of boats which you can then narrow down based on location, price, and other filters such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, etc.

However, if you’re looking to charter with other passengers, it may be more convenient to make a reservation with Viator . There are several small ship cruise options to choose from, many visiting a variety of islands!

It’s that easy!

Benefits of Chartering

Want to know a dirty little secret? Sailing is a lot of responsibility! During our charter, anchor lines got crossed with other yachts. High winds often influenced mooring and unmooring. Every day, intensive planning was done by the skipper to ensure the safe passage of both the passengers and the yacht.

There was paperwork, responsibilities such as getting shore power, and interactions with harbormasters that all needed to be handled at every marina. Behind the scenes, the crew was working hard! As first-time sailors, we were happy to sit back and let the highly-trained experts take care of all the dirty details.

Opportunity to Get Involved in the Sailing

Another benefit of chartering is that guests have the opportunity to get involved in sailing. This was our first time staying aboard a yacht and experiencing what life was like out on the sea. Some days we were actively involved, other days we relaxed and just watched the world go by.

Willing to choose the best places to stay by yourself or are you interested in getting off the beaten path? Try Trivago : a service comparing the best prices.

Finally, chartering a yacht is a great way for couples, friends, and families to explore together. It is extremely affordable and offers great value for groups looking to share a unique holiday experience.

Cyclades vs. Ionian – What’s the Difference?

One of the first steps when planning your sailing tour in Greece is to decide what region to explore. There are two main island chains to choose from; the Ionian, which lies in the north, and the Cyclades to the south. It’s important to know that these two island groups offer completely different sailing experiences.

We sailed in the Cyclades  during mid-May. Due to the unprotected layout of the islands, and the frequent windy conditions, this area offered more of an adventurous sailing tour. If the goal is to maximize sailing time, this may be the preferred itinerary.

Yacht Rental Greece

The lumpy waters tend to keep many tourists away. There were days we’d only see one or two other yachts out on the water. It was wonderfully underpopulated and quiet. Without mass tourism, the Cyclades are known to provide a more authentic Greek island experience.

Video

Southern Greece, in the Cyclades, is known for the Meltemi winds. When sailing the Cyclades, expect windier conditions and lumpier waters. It’s important to mention these winds because they can have a dramatic impact on your sailing holiday.

The Ionian region, in northwest Greece, has a completely different vibe and sailing experience . The islands are more sheltered by land which typically lends itself to calmer waters. However, this makes the region more touristy, and populated, and a bigger party scene. For these reasons, the majority of the flotillas will sail around these islands.

What’s the Typical Day Like

Depending on the course of the day, mornings typically started around 7-8 am. We began each day with a light breakfast, which consisted of cereals, yogurts, fruit, bread, jams, and coffee or tea. Depending on the wind conditions, we sailed for around five to six hours, with a lunch stop en route to the next marina.

Throughout the day there are opportunities to swim if desired.  Upon arrival, we were free to explore the island. At sunset, we’d enjoy wine and appetizers purchased from the local island shops.

best yacht charter in greece

Dinner is not part of the package price. However, there were many tavernas (a small Greek restaurants or cafe) at every marina we visited. We even had the option to prepare meals on board. Purchasing some appetizers and drinks and eating them aboard the yacht before dinner was a great way to save money!

Video

Motion Sickness

We enjoyed experiencing all the faces of the Aegean Sea, from calm and flat to unpredictable and bumpy. But the reality was, the sea was unpredictable and rough. Seasickness came with the territory.

Being prepared and knowing our bodies, really helped us work through any motion sickness . For example, a lighter breakfast with tea instead of coffee was always better. We discovered that muesli and yogurt were harder for us to digest and weighed heavy in our stomachs after departing.

During lumpy segments, we opted to avoid eating lunch altogether and simply enjoyed lunch when we arrived at the next marina. It’s okay to wait! At times, we munched on salty snacks like chips or pretzels.

best yacht charter in greece

The motion sickness medication typically lasted between 4-6 hours. Often during longer journeys, when the medicine started to wear off, I would lie down in our cabin to rest or read until we reached the marina.

What If You Don’t Like Seasickness Pills?

Harry, on the other hand, did not like the drowsiness he felt when taking the motion sickness pills and therefore, he refrained. Harry would rather vomit than be sleepy and drowsy. If he started feeling that his equilibrium was off, he opted to lie down in our cabin.

best yacht charter in greece

Cabins below the helm of the yacht experience less movement than cabins towards the bow. We never felt ashamed to relax or retire to our cabin if we weren’t feeling well. It’s normal. It’s acceptable. No one judged us if we weren’t feeling ill and needed some time to lay down while riding out the waves. The crew wanted us to enjoy ourselves and of course, not throw up.

Reflections On Our Yacht Charter

Reflecting on our time aboard the Malama, I crave to be back on the yacht, sitting on deck riding the waves, and watching the world go by. For us, it wasn’t always smooth sailing, but we are travelers who crave an adventure with a story to tell at the end of our journey.

best yacht charter in greece

If given the opportunity, we would jump on the chance to sail the Cyclades with and  charter a yacht again . We loved the feeling of looking out at the Aegean Sea, often without another soul in sight. We preferred the authenticity of these islands, with many still untouched by cruise ships and mass tourism. For that reason, we were happy with our decision to sail the Cyclades.

We documented life aboard a 52-foot sailing yacht as first-time sailors. It was an adventure of a lifetime. We invite you to watch our two-week documentary series, Rapture of the Deep , to learn more about what chartering a sailing yacht is all about.

What to Bring On Yacht Charter in Greece

Before our departure, our charter company provided a great packing list to help us prepare for our time on the Malama. The following are some insider packing tips to ensure a great trip.

  • Beach towels were provided so no need to bring them.
  • There are no outlets in the cabins on the Malama, but the galley has a few outlets and a great (fast) USB charging station. Bring the necessary cords and European plug adapters.
  • Bring shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and lots of sunscreen.
  • We packed super light and only brought two small backpacks. Less stuff means more room in the cabin.
  • Yacht etiquette calls for no shoes aboard. If you have sensory issues like me, consider packing cloth slippers or cozy socks.
  • Pharmacies were not common in some of the marinas. Bring any medicine and toiletries needed, especially motion sickness medication if desired.

Best Months to Enjoy a Yacht Vacation in Greece

We thought it would be fun to share info about what we’ve learned from our recent trip to Greece! As lovers of sailing & great vacation experiences, it’s fun to explore beyond the Virgin Islands.

Yacht charter catamarans on the quay in Nafplion Greece

Let’s begin planning your crewed yacht vacation with info on the 5 sailing areas of Greece. See the chart below. With nearly 277 inhabited islands, the area is so large that you cannot possibly see it all in one week. So yes, it really does take some thought on where you want to go.

Learn about the 5 Sailing Areas of Greece

June, July and August are usually dry months, full of sunshine and plenty of opportunities to sail. See the attached file on "Discover Greece” with a suggested discussion on things to see & do for each of these sailing areas: Cyclades Islands, Saronic, Sporades and Dodecanese Islands. It is very helpful.

We've also attached a very specific suggested sailing itinerary one that was recently by the captain of 67’ Catamaran Kimata for our clients. (It’s great!)

Typically, clients fly to ATH / Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos” the area is often referred to as “Attica".

What about the Weather & Wind in Greece?

Monthly Average Wind Speed and Water Temperature in Greece:

May: 10 kts / 71.6 °

June: 12 kts / 75.2 °

July: 15 kts / 78.8 °

August: 18 kts / 80.6 °

September: / 10-11 kts / 75 °

October: / 10-7 kts / 66 °

The sailing season is May to October. We feel like the water is too cool in May for lots of water sports activities such as snorkeling & swimming for extended periods of time; but we like June to mid-July . The #1 advice that we receive from the yacht managers for clients chartering in August to mid-September is “be flexible” with the itinerary. If the weather is affected by strong Meltemi winds the week of your charter, then your captain will sit down with the entire group and adjust the itinerary according to your needs, wishes and whether or not the group. The most important point to remember is that the captain will do what is best for you and make certain you have a great time. When the Meltemi does blow, it tends to be that much stronger in the afternoons and typically dies down again in the evenings. At the end of the sailing season in October, the winds are calmer; but the water is cooler.

On average the Meltemi dry Northerly wind blows at around 4 to 5 (20-38 kts) on the Beaufort Scale, but in August it can reach quite a lot higher which is anything between 5 and 7 or occasionally 8 too. For the seasoned sailor, it can be a real joy when the Meltemi starts to blow as it means there is some serious sailing to be enjoyed. If at any time, the winds blow 35+ knots, then you might want to alter your itinerary and sail the Peloponese coast (Saronic Islands) which is more sheltered. Although the Meltemi blows in the Aegean Sea, it does not affect the Ionian Sea which is too far to west and actually the Ionian and Aegean are two very different seas.

Learn what months are best to plan a yacht vacation in Greece

So, let’s say that everyone really wants to go in August; but they are not great sailors and they are worried about wind. We suggest you plan a charter from Athens back to Athens enjoying either the Peloponese coast (Saronic Islands) OR the Cyclades IF the weather permits. (We wish we had a crystal ball to predict the weather!) When the charter is over, take a quick inexpensive commuter flight from ATH/Athens to MYK/Mykonos and stay in a resort or villa for 2-3 nights. While you are in Mykonos, hop a fast hydrofoil and go to Santorini for the day. Based on what our clients like you have said recently, they really don’t enjoy spending a lot time in either Mykonos or Santorini due to the huge cruise ship crowds; but they want to see it. This is a great option that allows everyone to say they’ve been there and it’s easy to fly home from the international airport in Mykonos.

2023 Visitor Statistics for Mykonos: While there are approx. 4,800 cruise ship passengers everyday that visit the ever popular islands of Mykonos & Santorini, there will be 15,000 cruise ship passengers visiting Mykonos on August 22, 2023. This is because there will be eight cruise ships docking in Mykonos on that day. On the same day, there will be 12,000 visitors from the cruise ships visiting Santorini. It’s important to know this so that you understand how crowded it can be. The numbers of visitors are growing every year to these 2 popular islands and it is impacting the experience overall.

Hope this gets the discussion started about planning a yacht vacation in Greece!

Don’t forget to open the “Discover Greece” and the “Suggested Sailing Itinerary” attachments. Spend some time reading them.

Cheers to planning another fun sailing trip sometime, somewhere in the world soon!

Your Charter Yacht Brokers: Capt. Randy & Shelly Tucker!

best yacht charter in greece

If you want to experience a luxury yacht charter vacation first hand and up close, there is no better way than on your own privately crewed yacht with a full-time professional Captain and Chef/First Mate. We've been sailing and chartering for well over twenty-five years.

The U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands were our "backyard" which we came to love and cherish. So much so, that we sold everything in 1997 and moved to Charlotte Amalie, USVI as owners & operators aboard the 72' sailing yacht Three Moons. We do know the ins and outs of this special place & the people who live there. That's what makes us an official "Yacht Charters Guru”!

Never been on a chartered yacht vacation? We will help you personally design your charter yacht vacation. Imagine being able to sail into small bays with beautiful white sands & fantastic snorkeling. A yacht vacation is a great way to spend time with your friends or family.

Why use a CYBA certified yacht charter broker?

Key Takeaways:

As a member of CYBA , the Charter Yacht Broker’s Association, we adhere to strict yacht charter booking protocols. We have access to the CYBA industry escrow account to protect your money.

Charter yacht crews do not have access to this account. If it is a busy yacht with lots of booking reservations, they are taking care of guests onboard and do not have time to answer travel questions.

This is what differentiates professionally licensed yacht brokers from crews booking charters.

It is not safe to send your hard-earned money directly to a business or yacht that is not accredited by a professional charter industry association to handle client funds. Always ask!

Choose from an extensive list of yachts, including our spacious and stable catamaran charters , power catamarans , traditional monohull sailboat vacations , or high-end luxury motor yacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Belize, Croatia. Greece, and the Mediterranean.

We do not sell yachts like many other agencies so there is no conflict or distraction in our focus for your yacht charter. Our service is free to you. We travel extensively to boat shows and yacht charter shows year-round to personally view and inspect as many of the yachts as possible.

6 Reasons Why We are Qualified:

1. As Members of the Charter Yacht Brokers Association, The Virgin Islands Professional Charter Yacht League, and the BVI Charter Yacht Society, we maintain contact with the yachts to keep abreast of the very latest information on crew/yacht conditions and new yachts entering the arena.

2. We stay on top of local and Federal Governments to keep informed about changes in our industry, as well as involve ourselves with the changes in the environment in which we offer charters.

3. We engage in open dialogue with local publications to help keep the government and the public aware of this important industry in our islands.

4. We attend multiple charter yacht industry shows in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, go aboard each of the yachts, meet the crews, attend association meetings and seminars. We'll happily share our notes about changes to the boats and crews and confirm any newly added features and upgrades as well as re-fits to the boat’s decor like new carpets, interior and exterior soft goods & fun new water toys.

5. As a seasoned charter yacht Owner & Crew, we have access to the "inner circle" and know all the insider facts.

6. We've developed a longtime friendship with vendors of services such as local taxi drivers, ferry companies, good places to stay on land, great restaurants, and much more.

6 Tips For Choosing The Best Yacht Charter Experience

C hartering a yacht is the ultimate in custom vacationing, a travel trend that gained traction during COVID and shows no signs of stopping. It offers travelers an opportunity to reach their dream destinations in comfort, style, and exclusivity. The best part: Very often, this bespoke experience can be cheaper than a cruise on a higher-end line you’d have to share with a lot of strangers!

Here are six tips for choosing the best yacht charter experience to suit your style, tastes, and holiday goals!

1. Work Within Your Budget

For most travelers, money is indeed an object, or at least a big consideration. A great charter company has a fleet of vessels at its fingertips, from smaller options such as a catamaran or sailing yacht all the way up to a super yacht with ultra amenities. Their team will work with you to assess your travel budget and offer appropriate options. Keep in mind: There’s all sorts of costs — such as fuel, docking fees, and other extras — that factor into a vacation like this. Some companies roll most of those items into a blanket price, others will calculate them separately or in an overage fee called an “advance provisioning allowance.”

Quick Example: Last year, I sailed on the super yacht Ohana in Croatia. It was part of the Goolets charter group based in Slovenia, which charges a flat weekly accommodation cost; an advance provisioning fee is assessed for food, beverages, and any other extras. The lovely ship slept up to 30 guests quite comfortably and all-in at high season (with APF included) was about $143,000 a week. Steep? Sure, at first glance. But broken down per person, the cost comes out to about $4,300 for each friend or family member. That’s food, drinks, excursions, everything. So, it turns out this kind of travel can indeed be budget-friendly and a good charter will work with you to maximize your money.

2. Location, Location, Location

When considering a private yacht vacation, location is everything. The good news is that charter companies operate all over the world, from the aforementioned Croatia to Australia, the Caribbean, Indonesia, and everywhere there’s sea in between.

If you’ve got a dream destination on your bucket list, a private yacht vacation will help get you there. Choose a charter company that has deep bench strength in the region you want to visit. They’ll have a wide range of yachts and corresponding itineraries for you to consider, ensuring the perfect experience for you and your party. Whether you crave the party scene of Greece, Italy, or the Riviera, or prefer something more far-flung and secluded such as the Seychelles or Maldives, a yacht charter experience will have you covered.

3. Consider Your Entire Party’s Needs

Another big perk of a great charter company: They will handle all the onboard logistics during your cruise, considering your entire party’s interests, must-dos, mobility levels, and even special occasions in an easy, effortless manner. They will interview you ahead of time to assess your interests, then craft an itinerary that suits everyone from start to finish. Keep in mind, they know the local area, plus have access to the best guides and onshore experiences. They will pull out all the stops to make sure everyone in your group has a terrific time.

Culture vultures to party animals will have the perfect vacation planned for them by the yacht charter. From city walking tours led by historians to exclusive access to the best clubs and other hotspots, the charter company and your yacht’s onboard staff are there to make sure it’s all picture-perfect. And if you feel like scrapping your schedule for the day and choosing to stay on the water? That’s just fine, too. The crew will roll with your wishes and honor them.

4. Food And Beverages = Big Deals On Board

No question about it, fabulous food and hand-crafted beverages are central to a terrific private yacht experience. Again, this is where that thorough pre-interview really comes into play. A charter company will consider not just preferences, but any allergies, dietary considerations, or religious restrictions to make sure the chef is prepped accordingly. Expect special snacks and other surprise touches to shine through as well; during my charter, a special birthday cake was procured and presented to a young guest after dinner on his big day.

While the yacht’s team will make sure your food tastes just as spectacular as it looks, they’ll also likely lean into the regional culinary scene with locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats, and of course, seafood! Keep in mind your yacht’s stewards are responsible for keeping bar service running smoothly; by the second day, they knew which mid-afternoon cocktail I fancied (Croatian sparkling wine) and which wines I preferred at dinner. My glass was never empty, until I signaled I was done for the evening.

Bottom Line: Your culinary service should be seamless and impeccable during your time on board.

5. Don’t Forget The Water Toys

Water toys are a big part of a private yacht experience — you’re on the water after all and want to make sure you can get out there and enjoy it. Look for a vessel that has a robust fleet of options that align with your party’s fitness level and recreation (or adrenaline!) goals. Kayaks, rafts, and jet skis are all fairly standard; some yachts also include seabobs, massive water slides, and even inflatable water playgrounds to ensure multi-gen fun on the water.

Pro Tip: Depending on the destination, divers will also want to inquire about scuba or snorkel equipment.

6. Find A “Your Wish Is Their Command” Crew

One of the best parts of a private yacht vacation is the bespoke service you’ll experience every step of the way; the goal is to make sure you want for nothing during your time on board. Craving a cucumber water while you’re lounging on deck? They’ll have it. Want to make sure there are snacks waiting for you after you return from kayaking? Of course! And want to take your dinner to another level? Crews take great pride in creating over-the-top table masterpieces and theme nights that will dazzle everyone in your party.

Of course, crews can and do accommodate more outrageous requests, but don’t be that Below Deck nightmare and ask them for something that’s illegal. It puts them in a terrible position where they could be held liable, and it’s just not cool.

Keep In Mind: A crew that provides excellent service deserves excellent recognition. Be kind and make sure you factor an appropriate tip into your budget. It’s very often not included in the price of the charter or advance provisioning fee.
