C-CAT48-4

Description

One of my favourite performance catamaran designs is the Gunboat 48. They only ever built six of them, and they still change hands for well into 7 figures, so it has always surprised me that no-one has tried to fill this market gap. Outremer and Marsaudon have a 45 and a 42 respectively – slightly smaller, and they seem to sell well.

Well, no-one up until now that is, as the Italian yard C-Catamarans is launching the C- 48 and she looks like she might clean up in this sector of the market. This Italian yard has a history of spotting an opportunity. They successfully launched a 37 footer: another market that has been forgotten by the major manufacturers.

This Italian boat is competing with the likes of the Windelo 50 catamaran in the performance cruising market. It’s a busy market.

The C-Cat 37 was designed by Marc Lombard, one of our favourite architects, and is a neat entry level cat. They plan to launch a range of high performance, top of the range catamarans: a 62 footer, a 56 footer and the C-Cat 48. Exciting stuff and they’ll be going up against the likes of HH, Icecat, Kinetic, Balance, O Yachts and even Gunboat.

This fast cat is the same length as the Bali 4.8 but that is where the similarities finish. This catamaran is all about safe performance.

  • The look! This is a fantastic looking boat: Italian styling at its best
  • The combination of twin aft helms and the interior helm station means that you get the best of both worlds: maximum sailing feel and protection when the weather turns nasty.
  • With an SA / D ratio over 26, this is a fast, light boat along the lines of an Outremer (with more living space thanks to the Open design)
  • Pretty good value compared to the competition
  • Comar Yachts have plenty of experience in building boats.
  • The quality of the interior finish is a cut above the competition.
  • With twin 35 HP engines, she seems underpowered when the wind dies. I am guessing there will be an option to upgrade to more power here.
  • With only 300 litres of fresh water capacity, you are going to need a water maker
  • The fuel tanks are fairly modest too (2x 130 L). But then again, you should be sailing on this boat most of the time if you keep the weight off and your sail locker is full.
  • Aft helms. They always go in the pros and the cons, don’ t they? Great for maximum sailing feel when the C-Cat 48 accelerates, but you are exposed back there if it blows up. There is a great option for an inside wheel at the nav station as well. That would be top of my options list after the gennaker, Code 0 and water maker.

The Team Who Love Fast Cats The C-Cat 48 was designed by the Yacht Design Collective (François Perus and Romain Scolari) who are the team behind the ITA 14.99. It’s a catamaran that has been inspired by the likes of the Gunboat 60 and the Outremer 4X, but also has a healthy serving of Italian styling. This 48 footer  has been designed to cross oceans at speed in safety and comfort. She is built in Fiumicino, about an hour from Rome at the C-Catamarans yard.

She draws many design cues from her smaller sister, the C-Cat 37.

The entire cockpit and saloon is designed along the “Open” lines so loved by Marc Lombard, the designer of the smaller boat. You are protected by a large bimini with the aft cockpit and the saloon on the same level, separated by a large sliding door which connects the 2 spaces into one large open living area.

Best of Both Worlds? The C-Cat 48 is a catamaran for sailors along the lines of a Nautitech or a classic Catana with twin aft helms at the stern and all the running rigging led back so that you can manage the boat  without having to leave the aft cockpit. She’s been designed for short handed crews. The only sails that you will need to deal with forward are the light wind sails (gennaker, Code 0 and so on). There is a Harken winch on the mast to help you.

Of course, the main concern for most with sporty aft helms is protection and safety in bad weather. The C-Cat 48 has an option for an additional interior helm station with an interior wheel which gives you the best of both worlds. I can only think of Kinetic who offer a similar solution, and they are in the 7 figure price bracket

The ride is smooth like an Outremer, with a high bridge-deck and low Displacement to Length ratio. This cat should get you out of trouble quickly. They have though about weight distribution carefully. The anchor is set back just forward of the mast for instance, to centralise the weight.

A Powerful Sail Plan The SA / D ratio sits at over 26 with the mainsail and self tacking jib flying. There is also a genoa and options for a gennaker, code 0 and parasailor /Spinnaker. That should put the C – Cat 48 at the top of the performance cruiser category along with the likes of the Balance 482 (probably the closest competition?) There are also options for a carbon mast and longeron which will help you safely fly more sail area.

Modern and efficient, the C-Cat 48 is equipped with C-Foil daggerboards which should give you a bit of lift at speed.

This catamaran is constructed with a sandwich laminate structure infused with multiaxial fabrics and an epoxy-vinyl matrix. The bulkheads are made of composite with local carbon reinforcements in higher stress areas. She’s pretty rigid which all helps to improve the performance of this catamaran.

In the interior, there are 2 customizable options available: Antigua: a cleaner, sportier finish if weight reduction is your top priority, and St.Barth for a more luxurious, comfortable finish, albeit with some weight penalty.

The C-Cat 48 is one of the most exciting designs to come out in the performance cruising category. It’s great to see this Italian catamaran out on the water. I’ll be queueing up for a test sail!

How much does a C-Cat 48 Cost? What is the price? Well, as always, we will cover ourselves by saying that it depends on the options you go for, but a very nice example will set you back around €750k plus taxes.

The new C-Cat 48 is a high performance cruising catamaran, which is available in two different specifications. Rupert Holmes reports

c catamaran

The C-Cat 48 is a lightweight and fast Italian cruising catamaran from the Comar Yachts yard near Rome, Italy.

The newly announced catamaran features C-foil daggerboards, which should reduce displacement at speed, in turn helping the cat achieve high speeds on passage, and high bridgedeck clearance.

The C-Cat 48, follows the same philosophy as it’s younger sister, the C-Cat 37 and incorporates the same key concepts to create a single large outdoor living space. The cockpit is protected by a large bimini, which is fully closable for pleasant outdoor living, and the cockpit and dinette are both on the same level, divided by a large sliding door.

c catamaran

Young French designer François Perus has created a boat that fits at the high end of the performance cruising spectrum, yet still offers spacious and comfortable accommodation.

This accommodation includes a very sheltered cockpit that opens onto a large saloon with optional inside steering position.

Two customisable versions are offered: the Antigua is the higher performance option and emphasises the boat’s sporty potential, with a lightweight interior, while the Saint Barths offers a greater degree of luxury for those who may spend extended periods on board.

The first boat is scheduled for a mid-August 2021 launch at Fiumicino near Rome and will be unveiled to the public at the Cannes boat show .

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Between a Sailboat or Catamaran for Your Sailing Adventures

C hoosing between a sailboat and a catamaran for your sailing adventures is a significant decision that depends on various factors, including your sailing preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. Here's an ultimate guide to help you make an informed decision:

1. Sailing Experience:

  • Sailboats: Typically require more skill and experience to handle, especially in adverse weather conditions. Ideal for sailors who enjoy the traditional feel of sailing and are willing to invest time in learning and mastering the art.
  • Catamarans: Easier to handle, making them suitable for beginners. The dual-hull design provides stability, reducing the learning curve for those new to sailing.

2. Space and Comfort:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a narrower beam and less living space. However, some sailboats may offer comfortable cabins and amenities.
  • Catamarans: Wider beam creates more living space. Catamarans often have multiple cabins, spacious saloons, and expansive deck areas, providing a more comfortable living experience.

3. Stability:

  • Sailboats: Monohulls can heel (lean) while sailing, which some sailors enjoy for the thrill but can be discomforting for others.
  • Catamarans: Greater stability due to the dual hulls, providing a more level sailing experience. Reduced heeling makes catamarans suitable for those prone to seasickness.

4. Performance:

  • Sailboats: Known for their upwind performance and ability to sail close to the wind. Some sailors appreciate the challenge of optimizing sail trim for efficiency.
  • Catamarans: Faster on a reach and downwind due to their wide beam. However, they may not point as high into the wind as monohulls.
  • Sailboats: Typically have a deeper draft, limiting access to shallow anchorages and requiring deeper marina berths.
  • Catamarans: Shallow draft allows access to shallower waters and secluded anchorages, providing more flexibility in cruising destinations.
  • Sailboats: Generally more affordable upfront, with a wide range of options available to fit different budgets.
  • Catamarans: Often more expensive upfront due to their size and design. However, maintenance costs may be comparable or even lower in some cases.

7. Mooring and Docking:

  • Sailboats: Easier to find slips and moorings in marinas designed for monohulls.
  • Catamarans: Require wider slips and may have limited availability in certain marinas, especially in crowded anchorages.

8. Intended Use:

  • Sailboats: Ideal for traditional sailors who enjoy the art of sailing, racing enthusiasts, or those on a tighter budget.
  • Catamarans: Suited for those prioritizing comfort, stability, and spacious living areas, especially for long-term cruising and chartering.

9. Resale Value:

  • Sailboats: Generally have a more established resale market, with a wider range of buyers.
  • Catamarans: Growing in popularity, and well-maintained catamarans often retain their value.

10. Personal Preference:

  • Consider your personal preferences, the type of sailing you plan to do, and the kind of lifestyle you want aboard your vessel.

In conclusion, both sailboats and catamarans have their advantages and disadvantages. Your decision should be based on your individual preferences, experience level, budget, and intended use. If possible, charter both types of vessels to experience firsthand how they handle and to help make a more informed decision based on your own preferences and needs.

A ride on a fast catamaran led Lindsey Vonn to join U.S. SailGP Team’s board of directors

  • Copy Link copied

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eight years after catching a ride on a fast, foiling catamaran off Manhattan, retired skiing champion Lindsey Vonn has joined the board of directors of the United States SailGP Team.

Vonn is the latest star to come aboard the rebranded American team in tech billionaire Larry Ellison’s global league.

“As a Red Bull partner for nearly two decades, I’ve had the pleasure of sailing with Red Bull and that experience engaged my interest in sailing and encouraged my decision to get involved,” Vonn said in a statement released Monday.

The United States SailGP Team was purchased in November by a group of investors from the sports, technology and entertainment worlds. They include former Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner, who was taken with the 17th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday in the NFL draft; actress/producer Issa Rae; founding Uber engineer Ryan McKillen; and professional sailor Mike Buckley.

“When Lindsey competed in the Olympics, our entire country tuned in; and when she won the gold medal, we all celebrated,” said McKillen, the U.S. SailGP Team co-owner and chairman. “Her success in bringing alpine skiing into mainstream sports is what SailGP has set out to accomplish for sailing. Over her career, she’s been a savvy business operator off the mountain as well. We’re fortunate to have her join the U.S SailGP Team and have her mind and experience in our boardroom.”

Vonn retired from skiing in 2019 after winning three Olympic medals, including one gold, and four overall World Cup titles. She was the first woman to win 82 World Cup races.

Vonn went sailing with then two-time defending America’s Cup champion Oracle Team USA on its foiling catamaran on the Hudson River in May 2016, the day before the start of an America’s Cup World Series regatta. She got the full experience, including hiking out and working the winches, while outfitted with a Red Bull crash helmet and other protective gear.

“The guys were so fun and so cool and I guess they don’t normally let people help, really, when they get to be a guest on the boat, so it was a really cool experience,” Vonn said that day in a video released by Oracle. She said the combination of water and speed made for “just an incredible sensation. In that sense it is like skiing. When you’re on the mountain by yourself and going fast, just you and the mountain, it’s a similar feeling.”

The catamaran Vonn sailed on was an early version of the souped-up 50-foot cats used in SailGP, which is in its fourth season. Ellison and New Zealander Russell Coutts founded SailGP after Oracle Team USA lost the 2017 America’s Cup match to Emirates Team New Zealand.

Oracle skipper Jimmy Spithill was impressed with Vonn that day.

“For her to jump on and pick it up so quickly, especially in those conditions, we were all impressed and have a lot of respect for her. She is a natural athlete,” he said then.

Spithill skippered Team USA for two-plus seasons before retiring recently from SailGP racing. He plans to launch an Italian team later this year while continuing to sail for Italy in the America’s Cup.

Also sailing that day with Vonn was Tom Slingsby, who has skippered Team Australia to the first three SailGP season championships, each coming with a $1 million prize.

Team USA is sixth in the 10-team fleet with four regattas left in Season 4, which resumes Saturday and Sunday in Bermuda. SailGP returns to New York June 22-23 and the Grand Final is July 13-14 in San Francisco, with the winner-take-all purse increased to $2 million.

C-Cat 40 Power Fish

The C-Cat 40 PowerFish is derived from the C-Cat 37 sail catamaran, designed by the renowned Multihull designer Marc Lombard and Marco Amadio and has become the standard in this length class. Fast but at the same time comfortable and the space of a 50 footer on board!

This PowerFish is specially built for the fishing enthusiast, a large surface and stern platform and the two transoms with a fish storage bins will appeal to the angler. The C-Cat 40 has the same hull as the C-Cat 37, but has been extended at the rear to better transfer the power of the engines to the water without sacrificing efficiency. Now on the water with the standard 2x 90 HP engines, this Cat can reach a speeds of more than 15 knots! As the hull is designed very efficiently, only about 14 liters are consumed per hour at this speed, so that refueling does not have to be done so often. Larger engines can also be installed

The vacuum injection of the laminate with epoxy vinyl ester resin and the use of very light and advanced building materials has resulted in a very light and rigid construction which, together with the very high bridge deck, ensures that this catamaran moves through the waves much more smoothly than other “small boats”. catamarans.

There are 3 interior options available,

The standard owner’s version with 2 equal hulls with large double bed in the back and large bathroom in the front and lots of cupboard space in between.

Or the Club version with the owner’s hull to starboard with a large bed in the rear and a large bathroom in the front and a hull on the port side with a spacious sleeping cabin at the front and back with a smaller bathroom in between. (this is the most sold version)

Or the charter version with 2 equal hulls with a spacious sleeping cabin at the front and back and the smaller bathroom in between.

The saloon on the bridge deck between the hulls has a spacious sitting area, chart table and a spacious kitchen, because the saloon inside and the cockpit outside are on the same level, the indoor and outdoor space can easily be pulled together to form one large space that can be protected against the elements by the cockpit tent tarpaulins if desired.

It’s been mentioned before our C-Cats are safe; both bows have a so-called “crash box” at the very front. This ensures that when hitting a hard object, water does not immediately run through the entire boat, but that keeps the damage in place. In fact, there are 4 airtight compartments, making the C-Cat 40 PowerFish even unsinkable! All this gives you a very safe feeling on board!

The C-Catamaran yard is a relatively small yard, so we are flexible to accommodate owner’s wishes. Chartering or living on board gives you other wishes, just indicate these and we will make your C-Cat exactly the way you want it!
