With his debut mixtape, âLil Boat,â Lil Yachty fully shed the mumble rap label, transitioning from SoundCloud sensation to major label star.
Published on
Lil Yachtyâs debut mixtape, Lil Boat , is one of the pre-eminent releases of the SoundCloud era. Released on March 9, 2016, it made Lil Yachty a star, spawned multiple hits, and further legitimized the DIY-style rap that emerged at the beginning of the decade.
The Atlanta MC entered the crowded rapper-singer fray with a work thatâs split into two distinct sides, seeing him grapple with dueling elements of his personality and career. The first half of Lil Boat sees Yachty flex his flow, while the second half finds him crooning in AutoTune. That may be a slightly reductive way to look at the collection (in reality, he does both throughout), but thereâs certainly a kind of TI vs TIP split-personality concept to the whole affair. Yachty uses his style to demarcate who is who, and, despite his glee throughout, Lil Boat is a surprisingly subtle work for the chaotic time it represents.

A thin red line between love & hate: celebrating ygâs âmy krazy lifeâ, queen latifahâs jazz age, a standout work.
Yachtyâs debut mixtape is a standout work for the usual reasons â great name, great cover, and two singles that will forever be associated with Yachty and the era from which he emerged: âOne Nightâ and âMinnesota.â
As a title, Lil Boat was perfect. Serving two purposes at once, it created a fitting alt.moniker for the MC while helping a lot of people to pronounce his name (did you actually say it like âyachtâ?). Nautical luxury isnât the most commonly-evoked lifestyle in hip-hop (outside of Puffy), so that theme alone was enough to put Yachty in his own lane. And then thereâs the artwork: not a yacht, barely even a boat; itâs basically a little wooden dinghy. Beautifully composed, the image looks like a classical painting, bordered in a red that matches Yachtyâs hair. Itâs almost Americana in tone â though Yachtyâs music is anything but.
All hail âKing Of The Youthâ
Yachty may be poised and confident on that cover, but heâs also lost in the gloom at sea â an apt metaphor for the musical style he was leading. While not traditional in any sense, Yachty is honest with his emotions in a way that younger generations have always been, and Lil Boat found him attempting to navigate his way through the emotionally turbulent years of his late youth. Shortly after his breakout, Yachty would declare himself âKing Of Teensâ or, alternatively, âKing Of The Youth.â This might have sounded ridiculous to adults who werenât even sure how to pronounce his name, but those adults were no longer in charge. Lil Yachty was not part of some hip-hop assembly line; like other DIY pioneers before him, Yachty and his crew were making these songs at home, often in a matter of minutes.
Outside of the Vikings football team and Ice Cube âs âWhat Can I Do?,â Minnesota doesnât get name-checked very often in hip-hop. Simply naming a track after a state was seemingly in line with the aforementioned âhalf-Americana, half trollingâ theme of Lil Boat â but, of course, the song isnât actually about Minnesota. Itâs more of a celebration of Lil Yachtyâs arrival on the scene. The draw and significance of having both Quavo and Young Thug on a song in 2016 is hard to overstate, and their guest appearances turned âMinnesotaâ into a certified-gold hit. At the time, Quavo was just months away from releasing âBad And Boujee,â while Thug was fresh off Barter 6 and in the middle of his Slime Season run. Together, he and Yachty appeared at Kanye Westâs Yeezy Season 3 fashion show, on February 11, where The Life Of Pablo received its public unveiling. Just two days after releasing his debut mixtape, Yachty was at the epicenter of one of hip-hopâs biggest cultural shifts.
Unprecedented moves
Lil Boat was big enough that Burberry Perry â Yachtyâs right-hand man at the time and the producer behind most of the mixtape â came under pressure from the fashion label Burberry and was forced to change his name. That wasnât exactly an unprecedented move, but the speed with which it happened certainly was. Itâs not often that an internationally renowned fashion house serves a cease-and-desist to a kid who got famous on the internet and was barely old enough to vote.
Perryâs production on Lil Boat âs lead single, âOne Nightâ (Yachtyâs best-known song to date), guided the way for the rest of the collection. Even the beats he didnât produce fall right in line, all cascading bells, and whistles alongside keys that let you hear Yachtyâs grin throughout.
Lil Yachtyâs emergence closely resembles that of the Odd Future collective, who, years earlier, more or less launched DIY rap on the internet (depending on how you view Lil Bâs rise to fame). Seemingly overnight, Yachty was partnering with Urban Outfitters and the aptly titled Nautica clothing brand. His rapid ascent would have sounded like fan fiction just a few years earlier but, after his breakout, many artists began following his path to fame on a regular basis.
Having hit it big in such a short space of time, Yachty wasnât about to slow down. He went on to guest (and absolutely steal the show) on âBroccoli,â a DRAM song with a Yachty-perfect beat. As one of the stars in Quality Control âs shining roster, Yachty was operating alongside some of the biggest acts in hip-hop. With Lil Boat, he fully shed the âmumble rapâ label, completing the transition from SoundCloud sensation to major label star.

Lil Yachty Made The Innovative ‘Let’s Start Here’ Album So He’d Be Seen As More Than ‘Just Some SoundCloud Rapper’
Ask Run-DMC : the musical dance between rap and rock music is nothing new. Despite publicly sharing that his next project would, in fact, be a departure from his signature rap sound, Lil Yachty fans are surprised by his new album, Let’s Start Here .
The 14-track album, rooted in the sounds of psychedelic rock, marks the rapper’s first full-length release in nearly three years. Let’s Start Here features guest production by Justin Raisen, Sad Pony, Patrick Wimberly, Unknown Mortal Orchestraâs Jacob Portrait, Nick Hakim, Magdalena Bay, and Jam City, as well as a musical appearance by MGMTâs Ben Goldwasser on the keyboards. While most artists are fearful of stepping out of the sounds fans have grown to expect from them, Lil Yachty, on the other hand, embraced the challenge. The creative deviation, according to Twitter users, has ultimately paid off.

During a private listening party for the album, Lil Yachty shared his true motivations for stepping outside of rap music on this project. He told the packed room, “This album is so special and dear to me. I think I created it because I wanted to be taken seriously as an artist. You know? Not just some SoundCloud rapper. Not some mumble rapper. Not some guy that just made one hit. I wanted to be taken seriously because music is everything to me, and I respect all walks of music. Not just rap and hip-hop but everything. I wanted to make something that showed the world that shows it, just how great music is to me.”
The phrase “SoundCloud rapper” is often used to demise a rapper’s musicality. During the height of the streamer, aspiring musicians could upload raw cuts of their DIY songs using it as a way to gauge the quality, measuring it against how popular it became. Often time, these musicians didn’t have a formal background or training in songwriting or production. SoundCloud removed the barriers of entry for a lot of today’s biggest names in rap, including Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, and Chance The Rapper, to name a few.
Yachty then added that because the trendiness of the sound often found on the music streamer (pioneered by Lil Uzi Vert and himself) was being so over-saturated, he felt like it was time to reinvent himself. Yachty told the crowd, “If we’re just going, to be honest. A lot of n****s are copying the swag, and I just felt like if everyone can do this, that’s fine. But I’m going to show y’all what y’all can’t do.”
To be fair, Lil Yachty isn’t the only artist earning praise for their exploration into rock music, SZA also was applauded for her rock track, “Ghost In The Machine,” featuring Phoebe Bridgers, off her new album SOS . Kid Cudi has also released a fully rock-centered album.

#NowPlaying
Lil yachty, 'poland', the viral soundcloud hit is now an official track.
Mano Sundaresan
This #NowPlaying pick comes courtesy of Heat Check .
Here's how I imagine the making of "Poland" went:
LIL YACHTY: "You recording?" ENGINEER: "Yep." LIL YACHTY: "I TOOK THE WOOOOOOOOCK TO POLAND!" F1LTHY: "What the hell was that??" ENGINEER: "Do you wanna try that again?" LIL YACHTY: "Nah trust me ... OK, now make me sound like I'm a robot singing into a fan." RANDOM GUY IN STUDIO: "I'm leaking this."
Whether it's Michigan rap or sample drill, Yachty is constantly looking for new sounds to fold into his world. But the cyber-vibrato on "Poland" reminds me of the goofier Sailing Team days when he was emerging in the wake of Makonnen, KEY and other Atlanta rap mavericks â a singer that couldn't really sing but had enough charisma and auto-tune to pull it off. The song hinges on its insane hook. The verse is kind of forgettable. But that's all it has taken for fans to eat this thing up. Yachty is probably channeling Duwap Kaine, too, a 20-year-old from Savannah, Ga. who's quietly influenced a generation of internet rap crooners by pushing auto-tune to its limits . Kaine seemed to get the message; he's already released a remix .

This is arguably one of the hardest Yachty songs ever, I will vouch for that on anything. From the intro to the very last moment of this song, there's something very special about this one. It's so characteristic of Yachty, so it's no surprise why it's become such a popular song.
12. "Minnesota" - Lil Yachty (feat. Quavo, Young Thug, and Skippa Da Flippa) (2016)
Off his debut album, "Minnesota" is an absolute classic Lil Boat banger. The song shows off all of the best sides of Yachty around the time of his breakout into the music scene. Ahh, the good ol' days of SoundCloud.

8. "Get Dripped" - Lil Yachty (feat. Playboi Carti) (2018)

The two artists morph their unique Atlanta-based styles together, and create music that literally nobody else in rap could replicate.
7. "66" - Lil Yachty (feat. Trippie Redd) (2018)

6. G.I. Joe - Lil Yachty (feat. Louie Ray) (2021)
Another song from Yachty's Michigan Boy Boat album, "G.I. Joe" was yet another standout. It's great to see the chemistry Yachty has with all of the many features from this project, but there's something especially unique about the energy shared between Boat and Louie Ray.
5. "All of the Opps Is Opp'd" - Lil Yachty (Unreleased)
While not everyone is probably hip to this song, everybody should be. This Cash Cobain-produced banger samples Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," and turned it into a contemporary drill classic. Thank us later.
4. "Dynamic Duo" - Lil Yachty (feat. Tee Grizzley) (2021)
The name of the song is no lie: Lil Yachty and Tee Grizzley really are a "Dynamic Duo," but you should've known that already, after their prior collabs. To Lil Boat diehards, this was no surprise. On a stacked project, somehow this song managed to be one of the standouts.
3. "Poland" - Lil Yachty (2022)
Talk about "best Lil Yachty songs." It's impossible to forget the iconic moment Yachty had with the leak of this song. "I took the woOoOoOoOok... to Poland" will never get old, at least to the younger generation. The memes that were generated from this wave will surely never age, that's for sure.
2. "DipSet" - Lil Yachty and Offset (2016)

Lil Yachty And Despot Link On Impressive New Single "Rain"
Lil Yachty, Despot, and sadpony drop a triumphant track together.
What more needs to be said about Lil Yachty this year? The man has been on a creative escapade throughout the duration of 2023. We still have three and a half months to go before the new year, which means plenty of time for Lil Boat to wow us. Well, he is continuing to bring the heat in many different forms. Unfortunately, this latest offering is only available on SoundCloud which may bring some disappointment to his fans. However, they might want to still check "Rain" out because it is a fantastic track.
Here he teams up with elusive underground rapper Despot and producer sadpony. The vibe of the track is very idiosyncratic with the production being very minimal. With a flare of alternative pop and hip-hop thrown in as well, it is a truly fascinating combination of sounds and artists. Despot may not be an extremely household name, but he is a veteran in the New York underground and has been for quite some time. He rarely drops any music and is signed under Run The Jewels member, El-P , and his label, Definitive Jux. Right away you might be thinking how do all three of these artists do together? It is simply magic.

Yachty and Despost are both rapping passionately over sadpony's odd instrumental. It throws in shots of background vocals, water dripping, and a xylophone. It is a colorful production from sadpony who worked extensively on Let's Start Here . The messages from both rappers are very inspirational adding to a grand but distinctive beat.
What are your initial thoughts on this brand new Soundcloud exclusive track, "Rain," from Lil Yachty, Despot, and sadpony? Is this one of Yachty's best performances of the year? Yachty first released “Poland” on Soundcloud last week after snippets of the song were leaked online. The 83-second track quickly gained traction with its woozy, 8-bit beat (produced by F1lthy, Lukrative, and Lucian) and its instantly memorable (and meme-able) hook, which Yachty delivers with a distinct wobble in his voice, “I took the Wock to Poland.” (“Wock” is shorthand for Wockhardt, the pharmaceutical company that makes promethazine and codeine cough syrup.)

About lil yachty.
Lil Yachty makes it look easy. An Atlanta-raised rapper with a sleepy flow and a bright, almost childlike outlook, Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum in 1997) rose to prominence in 2016 with a pair of mixtapes (Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2) that recast the booming caverns of 2010s rap as something soft, sweet, intuitive, and a little goofyâa sound Yachty once called âbubblegum trap.â Dozens of features and guest appearances followed, including cosigns from Kanye, Chance the Rapper, Calvin Harris, and Macklemore. In 2017, he released his first full-length album, Teenage Emotions. His second, 2018âs Lil Boat 2, took a harder, darker turn but retained the clarity that made his early music stand out. Like Lil Uzi Vert (or Young Thug before him), Yachty represents a turn away from the conventional metrics of rap, favoring slogans over bars, hooks over metaphors, fluidity over stricture, and vibe above all. (He famouslyâor infamously, depending on your stance toward traditionâonce told Billboard that he couldnât name five songs by either 2Pac or Biggie.) But heâs also emblematic of a broader shift from understanding rap music as an end in itself to seeing it as an extension of the person who made it, a facet of a bigger image or experience. No wonder he FaceTimes with fans, or started his career primarily as a presence on Instagramâfor him, the project is social. Still, it wouldnât make a difference if the music itself werenât strikingâand if he werenât so casual about it too. Speaking to Beats 1âs Zane Lowe shortly before releasing Teenage Emotions, Yachtyâguileless and ever-intuitiveâsaid, âI didnât know [my sound] was different. I didnât know until it took off. Then I was like, âWell, I donât sound like nobody else.ââ He paused. âI donât even know if thatâs a good or a bad thing. But itâs a thing. Itâs a thing.â

Lil Yachtyâs Letâs Start Here. Is a Surface-Level Rebrand
By Pitchfork
Our weekly podcast includes in-depth analysis of the new albums we find extraordinary, exciting, and just plain terrible. This week, Reviews Director Jeremy D. Larson hosts Staff Writer Alphonse Pierre and Contributing Editor Dylan Green to talk about Lil Yachty âs unlikely trajectory from SoundCloud rap ambassador to trippy funk explorer, and why his new album Letâs Start Here. doesnât totally hit the mark.
Listen to this weekâs episode below, and follow The Pitchfork Review  here . You can also check out an excerpt of the podcastâs transcript below.Â
Jeremy D. Larson: Â On the new albumâs first song, â the BLACK seminole. ,â thereâs one lyric that stood out to me: âThis part Iâve seen in my dreams/Love is not a lie/It just feels like a Tarantino movie scene.â
Dylan Green: Â Oh, my God. What does that mean?Â
Larson: Is he talking about Inglourious Basterds ? [ laughter ] Grindhouse ? It speaks to the almost-specific nature of this album, like weâre almost getting a clear image of exactly what heâs talking about, but he stops just short of creating this world that feels like you can fully inhabit it.Â
Green:  But really, what movie is he talking about?! I donât want to be like Travolta and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction .Â
Larson: Â Tough love between those two.
Green:  I donât want my life to end like the couple did at the end of Inglourious Basterds , where she burns the movie theater to the ground. Like, what do you want, Yachty? [ laughter ]Â
Larson: Â What do you think his favorite Tarantino movie is?
Alphonse Pierre:  Probably Pulp Fiction ?Â
Larson: Â Jackie Brown ? Underrated.
Pierre:  Thatâs the movie he should have watched before this, because I feel like he would have gotten some different influences from that Blaxploitation era that Tarantino was pulling from.
Green: Â Oh, shit!Â
Larson:  Man, that wouldâve been great. Some more Isaac Hayes, some more Shaft .Â
Pierre: Â Thatâs the sound they needed, a little bit more funk.Â
