Gough Restoration Team arrives at the island

Gough restoration programme undwerway as expedition yacht evohe arrives from cape town, report and photos from the rspb gough restoration project team.

The Gough Island Restoration Programme got properly underway when the yacht Evohe departed from Cape Town on Tuesday 18th February 2020. The vessel carried the first tranche of the main Gough Restoration Project Team to join the three RSPB Field Biologists Michelle Risi, Christopher Jones and Alexis Osborne who were already on the island.

The yacht had a few rough days at sea crossing the South Atlantic but it was quicker than expected and they arrived ahead of schedule at dawn on Friday 28th February 2020. The project team landed safely and were greeted with island-baked muffins. The sailing vessel was unloaded by lunch time.

The arrival - welcoming, unloading, settling everyone in - was a team effort including all the current RSPB and SANAP staff on Gough Island.

The sailing yacht Evohe is a New Zealand registered 25m passenger vessel specialising in research and natural history filming expeditions. The vessel is built of steel, accommodates 12 passengers + 7 crew and is well suited to transporting & supporting expeditions to remote locations around the world.

Evohe carries a comprehensive list of equipment including two aluminium RIB tenders & a two-man flying dinghy. She is a veteran of many successful expeditions including a transit of the Arctic from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean via the Northwest Passage. All vital onboard systems are duplicated including main engines.

In recent years Evohe has been engaged in projects around the South Pacific, South Atlantic and Southern Ocean with expeditions to South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula and New Zealand's Subantarctic islands, Campbell Island, the Auckland Islands and Snares Islands, Antipodes Islands and Bounty Islands.

Mellish Reef DXpedition Ready to Pick Up the Post-FT5ZM Slack

When the hubbub generated by the FT5ZM Amsterdam Island DXpedition is still echoing in our ears, the Mellish Reef VK9MT DXpedition will be waiting in the wings to launch its own adventure on the Amateur Radio airwaves. VK9MT will be handing out another rare one March 29 through April 9 from the Coral Sea atoll.

“We are on schedule and will soon be on autopilot,” the team announced in late January.

The team said that one of its biggest logistical challenges will be the purchase of 1400 liters of “petrol” (gasoline) to fuel generators. The team has selected the 25 meter passenger expedition yacht Evohe from New Zealand to transport operators and gear to Mellish Reef. Given the paucity of dry ground at the operating site, DXpedition participants plan to take their meals and sleep on the vessel.

The skipper of Evohe has agreed to handle the sourcing and take delivery of the fuel. This month generators, antennas, feed lines, and accessories will be heading to Australia.

A pilot team now is in place to manage all communication between the island team and DXers. “While on the island we will not be checking personal e-mail accounts,” the team pointed out, adding, “Please direct operational suggestions to the pilot designated for your region.” An online log will be available. The DXpedition also has spelled out its QSL policy on its website.

Located some 1150 kilometers north-northeast of Brisbane, Australia, Mellish Reef takes the form of a boomerang-shaped platform some 10 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. According to the VK9MT website, the surrounding reefs, which enclose a narrow lagoon, are completely submerged or awash at high tide. Near the lagoon’s center is the only permanent land — Heralds-Beacon Islet — a small cay rising just a few meters above the high-water mark and composed largely of sand, shingle and coral rubble.

The schedule calls for 10 full days of operation on 160 through 10 meters, CW, SSB, and RTTY, with 10 operators. Six members of the successful ZL9HR operation from Campbell Island in December 2012 are among the team members.

“Team Mellish” has reported that Australia’s Commonwealth Marine Reserve Operations Department reviewed the group's DXpedition plan and will require that the visitors follow the department’s documented environmental protection regulations. “Effective July 1, 2014, Mellish Reef becomes part of Australia’s new Coral Sea Marine Reserve Management Program, which implements additional restrictions to further protect the area’s ecology,” an earlier team announcement noted. “[W]e appreciate the Australian government’s cooperation and spirit of partnership in making this DXpedition possible.” The Australian Communications and Media Authority issued the call sign VK9MT last fall for use on Mellish Reef.

Last activated in 2009, Mellish Reef is number 23 on ClubLog’s February 2014 DXCC Most Wanted List .

The DXpedition budget is estimated at $110,000 — a bit more modest than the $450,000 FT5ZM budget. That figure does not include operators’ individual expenses. The team has pledged “full financial transparency” for all aspects of the DXpedition. “When the books are closed, clubs and foundations that supported the project will receive a financial accounting,” Team Mellish has said.

Contact the DXpedition via e-mail. The DXpedition also has a Facebook page .

The Lost Whales

Produced by NHNZ

Whalers almost wiped out the southern rights in a decade of slaughter.   Since then they have rarely been seen.

After 150 years of near-extinction, a lost tribe of great whales has resurfaced. The discovery of their remote breeding grounds at mysterious islands in the subantarctic has sparked new hope for their survival.

Researchers and film-makers set sail in the sturdy yacht Evohe , heading out from New Zealand into the the wild seas of the Southern Ocean to reveal the secrets of the lost whales and film their most intimate moments.

They brave winter to rendezvous with the gentle giants in a huge natural harbour sheltered from the furious storms which sweep across the islands from the Antarctic.

After a history of massacre, the researchers wonder how the whales will react to their presence in the breeding grounds.   But far from being fearful of humans, a curious whale comes alongside the Evohe to investigate the newcomers.

It’s the start of a winter of wonder with the whales.   The dive team builds a relationship with several of the whales, being entertained with an underwater ballet ending in a spectacular aerial display;   a teenage tantrum which gets a little too close for comfort;   a protective mother caring for her new calf;   a hectic game of chase with tormenting sea-lions;   and a play session in the seaweed forests.

Researchers identify whales and begin a modern whale hunt—for knowledge.   Armed only with a small crossbow, they take skin and blubber samples to learn about pollution levels, family relationships, and possible connections with other groups of whales elsewhere in the world.   It’s feared that these whales may have been reduced to such a low number that any population recovery will suffer from in-breeding—reducing their chances of long-term survival.

But these remote islands are full of survivors—the world’s rarest penguin, the rare New Zealand sea-lion, and a host of birds and plants which have been blown here from distant lands by the tempestuous winds.   All have adapted to thrive in their new home.   Despite the bleakness of the islands, they are one of very few places where the creatures of the Southern Ocean can find somewhere to breed and raise a family.

Breeding is why the whales are here.   They’re getting down to serious courting, with prolonged foreplay and astounding matings in the clear cold waters of the bay.

The giant lovers take their time, at first a couple, and then a group, all so intent on each other that they ignore the divers recording the greatest love scene in the animal kingdom.

Away from the main action the divers are amazed when a mother allows them close to her new-born calf—the closest anyone has got to filming a birth, which has never been seen.   Researchers report that this population of Southern Rights is growing, but its future is still in question.   They plan to return next year.

As winter ends it is time for whales and researchers to leave the islands.   The yacht Evohe follows familiar friends into the Southern Ocean, heading for the freedom of the open seas.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

evohe yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

evohe yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

evohe yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

evohe yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

evohe yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

evohe yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

evohe yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Ten amateur radio operators set out from Bluff yesterday for one of the holy grails of the transmitting world, Campbell Island.

The group, consisting of ham operators from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, Hungary and Borneo, left Bluff Harbour on the 25-metre yacht Evohe, destined for the remote sub-Antarctic islands.

Expedition leader Tommy Horozakis, of Melbourne, said the purpose of the trip was to erect at least five radio stations and transmit signals around the world for 10 days.

"Thousands of ham radio operators from every continent on Earth will attempt to make contact. We expect to make 60,000 contacts," he said from Bluff before the group weighed anchor.

For many ham operators the ultimate thrill is to receive contact from a list of 340 countries or entities on a list established within the ham community.

The highest-level award requires the applicant to contact all entities on the DXCC list. DXing is the hobby of receiving and identifying distant radio or television signals, or making two-way radio contact with distant stations in amateur radio.

Expedition co-leader John Halkiadakis said the list of entities were ranked on how difficult they were to make contact with.

"Campbell Island is extremely remote, with the last major ham radio expedition to Campbell Island in January 1999," he said.

"So people have to wait a long time for a chance to make contact with some entities."

Campbell Island ranks at number 11 on the DXCC list. The list is toppped by North Korea, who ban ham radio use, Navassa Island in the Caribbean Sea, Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean, Yemen, and Heard Island, which is about two-thirds of the way to Antarctica from Madagascar.

Evohe will carry the group along with seven complete radio stations, amplifiers, antennas, more than 1.2 kilometres of cable, four generators and 1100 litres of petrol.

The Department of Conservation has granted the group permits to Campbell Island and use of several of the island's vacant buildings. The expedition is expected to return to Bluff in two weeks.
