Is Kialoa III one of the most iconic maxi yachts of her era? Yes. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens in 1975 for Jim Kilroy who had already owned two S&S yachts previously, so an experienced yacht racer/owner. Built at Palmer Johnson, she was originally designed/built as a 79’ Ketch Maxi for offshore racing.

The year of her launch, Kialoa III went onto win the Sydney to Hobart race with a record time of 2 days 14 hours 36 minutes and 56 seconds. She held for a staggering 21 years! During her early career Kialoa III was well known in the maxi circuit throughout the world, wining nearly every big regatta going. In the late 70’s her rig configuration was changed from a ketch to a sloop and what today you see is how she has remained since about 1978.

Kialoa III’s interior is standard for a Sparkman & Stephens yacht of this size and era, with teak varnish and contrasting white panelling throughout. She can comfortably sleep 5 guests in two cabins and the salon area and a further four crew bunks in the bow area.

This is an elegant yacht from a bygone era of Maxi yacht racing, she allows for fast, safe and comfortable cruising but allows for big boat regatta racing at the weekend.

Kialoa III is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with aluminium decks. Powered by 1 x diesel Cummins (5.9 Kuter) 270hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 10 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 12 knots with a range of up to 1,100 nautical miles from her 205 gallon fuel tanks at 10 knots. Her water tanks store around 475 Gallons of fresh water.

Roast dinner round the Rock: onboard the iconic Sparkman & Stephens design Kialoa II

The iconic 1963 S&S Kialoa II drew quite a crowd in Plymouth after the Rolex Fastnet Race, we took a tour

Without question one of the yachts that attracted the most lingering glances on the busy pontoons of Plymouth Yacht Haven at the Rolex Fastnet Race village last week was Kialoa II , the famous 1963 S&S design.

The languid, elegant lines of the 72-footer drew plenty of comments about being ‘a proper yacht’, while experienced racing sailors could often be spotted examining the hefty deck gear and explaining to younger crews how things were done in the days before retractable poles and asymmetrics.

Kialoa II was sailed in the 2017 Rolex Fastnet Race by her current owners, brothers Paddy and Keith Broughton. Paddy described the race as an ‘absolute hoot’, with Kialoa’s  long waterline length helping eat up the miles on the upwind early stages before her considerable sail plan, bolstered by a mizzen staysail, saw them fly back from the Rock to finish in just over four days.

“In straight lines she goes fantastically,” commented Broughton. “Where there’s a fetch, and you’ve got a reasonable amount of breeze but not so much that other boats can get up and plane, the waterline line length really comes into its own.

“She leans over a little bit, puts all those beautiful lines in the water all the way from the long bow to the transom and just charges! We were doing steadily 10-11 knots for ours on end and it was wonderful.”

The team included stalwarts from the campaigns such as the famous Aussie maxi Brindabella , including navigator Lindsay May, who has over 40 Sydney-Hobart Races to his name.

Kialoa II was one of the very first aluminium yachts, and was built of aircraft grade metal for legendary owner Jim Kilroy in 1964. She entered most of the major ocean races, as recounted in Kilroy’s famous autobiography, Dare to Win. Victories included winning class in the Transpac Race in 1965, a year after her launch. She was also first home in the punishing 1971 Sydney-Hobart Race, a year which saw the fleet beating for much of the 600-mile course to Tasmania. Her previous attempt at the Fastnet, in 1969, saw her cross the line 2nd, to take 5th overall. Unlike the later  Kialoa yachts,  Kialoa II  also cruised many of the world’s oceans.

Originally a sloop, she was reconfigured with a trim tab and mizzen mast in 1967, and races today with a very similar sail plan arrangement to the days when she would have been skippered by Kilroy.

The Broughtons bought Kialoa II just over a year ago, and have worked on bringing her back to racing spec with experts such as Hugh Welbourn. One of the earliest things they realised on sail trials was that the yacht, which has deep, deep bilges, pitches fiendishly unless sailed with full fuel and water tanks.

Much of the original deck gear remains, including twin two-speed Barient coffee grinder pedestals with foot clutches and a metal chain uphaul on the inboard end of her mighty spinnaker pole.

While the original ‘Magnetron’, a forerunner of today’s microwave ovens, is no longer in the galley, the yacht’s unique gimbaled serving counter remains. It was used to full effect by the Broughtons’ crew, who enjoyed a full roast dinner served from her vintage galley on their trip around the Rock.

They now plan to sail her in some of the classic ocean races that Kilroy competed in, starting with a delivery sail down to Australia for the 2017 Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race starting on Boxing Day. The plan is to set off from the UK for Cape Town, before heading across to Albany, Western Australian, letting the 53-year-old design stretch her legs in the southern Indian Ocean. In doing so  Kialoa  II would join an elite group of yachts which have competed in both the Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart Races in the same year on their own keel.

The Classic 1960’s Maxi

KIALOA II was designed in 1963 for Jim Kilroy by the premier naval architecture firm of Sparkman and Stephens. Her design goal was to compete and win in the maxi ocean racing category. She did successfully, winning most major ocean races. One of her highlights was winning the grueling upwind Sydney-Hobart Race in 1971.

KIALOA II was built by Yacht Dynamics in Harbor City, California and launched in 1964. This firm was organized by Ken Watts, of Watts Sails, Bud Gardiner, and Donald Douglas, of the Douglas Aircraft Corporation, and Kialoa II was the first of the three vessels they built. She was the largest aluminum sailing yacht to be built in the U. S. at that time.

ABOUT KIALOA

KIALOA originated from a shared love of being on the ocean as outrigger canoe paddlers, living on the windward side of Oahu. We paddled together, raced each other, and afterward talked story and celebrated the shared experiences that brought us together and kept us together - like family ('ohana).

We moved from the Hawaiian oceans to the Oregon mountains and realized that this shared love of being on the water applied equally to the oceans, lakes and rivers of the Pacific Northwest, and to the people who paddle them. Our reverence for being on the water is reflected in this new site, and what you'll find here; a collection of products for being in, on and around the water and stories from the people who use them. It's our intention to enhance the connection to the water and to one another and to share stories from the community that celebrate those connections.

The Story Behind Our Name

When I was 12 years old, my parents enrolled me in a summer school woodshop class. While most of the students built cutting boards and skim boards for their class project, I told our instructor I wanted to build a model sailboat. I wanted to build a boat named Kialoa.

My fondest memories of my father are the times we spent walking around different places on Oahu. One of our “hangouts” was the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. On one of our tours, the fleet from the Transpacific Yacht Race was at anchor. Included in the fleet was race winner Kialoa II. In my 8-year-old mind, she seemed the most beautiful thing in the world.

I only saw Kialoa II once, but the impression of this sleek boat never left my thoughts. Kialoa II the sailboat morphed into Kialoa the dream. The dream a child has when looking to the future and thinking what can be. Somewhere along the line I told myself “ if I ever have a business, I will name it KIALOA ”.

In 1990, my wife Meg and I started an outrigger canoe paddle business on the backyard lanai of my parents’ home. We named the company KIALOA Paddles. In the years since, we have been asked many times if we named the company in reference to the Hawaiian definition for the word Kialoa – swift, fast canoe. The answer is always “no, we named the company after a sailboat owned by Jim Kilroy”.

I still have the model I built of Kialoa II, and while it is not an accurate replica of its namesake she does feature a cast lead keel so she could carry more sail. This model is the only toy I have kept from my childhood. But when I think about it, the model doesn’t matter. Kialoa is really about the time I spent with my father. A time, when he taught me how to dream.
