Record breaker MARI-CHA III is a Super Maxi whose hydraulic sailing systems may be converted to manual operation to comply with the rules stipulated by the World Speed Sailing Record Council. The interior can be dismantled to reduce weight for racing programs and give room to the racing crew of 25. However, the full width owner's suite with its adjoining study and large shower room remains largely intact, as do the crew quarters. MARI-CHA III, in racing mode, became the new Atlantic record breaker on October 24, 1998, when she crossed the finish line at Lizard Point in southern England at 12:08:17. MARI-CHA III sailed from New York to Lizard in 8 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 41 seconds. She averaged 14 knots. Sydney/Hobart 1999 Hobart Dec 28, 1999 07:32 am Mari-Cha III, Bob Miller's 147' Ketch, holder of the fastest time accross the Atlantic, beat this morning the Sydney to Hobart record. Sailing the 627 course in 1day 18h 37' at an average speed of 14.75 Knts Mari-Cha beat Morning Glory's record by 19h30'10" a gain of 46.The crew lead by the owner Skipper Bob Miller and co-skipper Jef d'Etiveaud included 3 watch leaders: international top sailors Michael Sanderson, Tom Dodson and Herve Jan who arrived in Sydney after his victory in the Transat Jacques Vabre. Prince Pavlos of Greece and Prince Alexander Von Furstenberg were members of the crew. On a rough course with wind averaging between 25 and 40 knots, the ketch showed running superiority often hiting speeds in excess of 30 Knts best speed recorded is 32.45 Kts in winds favoring lighter boats such as Nokia which arriving two hours after Mari-Cha took the official race 1st place. Mari-Cha however established a new class record. She also becomes the fastest boat on this course. Bob Miller who found the race "too short"... comments: We trust we set a hight level of performance for the next superyacht race on the same course.

MARI CHA III super-sailer yacht reduced in price
Published 28 April 2014
A price reduction of USD 3,450,000 has been announced for the 44.7m MARI CHA III. One of the highest performance yachts of her class, she holds numerous race records and remains one of the fastest super-sailers afloat.
With an extremely light and solid hull, MARI CHA III is capable of reaching a top speed of 17 knots with just 14 knots of true wind. She can also hit a top speed of 14.8 knots under the power of her single 600hp Caterpillar engine, and cruises at 10 knots.
But comfort and style have not been sacrificed in the name of performance; this luxury superyacht was designed by Philippe Briand, with interior and exterior design by John Munford. Built by Sensation Yachts in New Zealand in 1997, she has excellent deck spaces for dining and entertaining, and can accommodate up to six guests. A spacious owner's suite, two double and one twin cabin make up the full guest configuration.
This is a unique chance to own a top racing vessel that also provides the full superyacht experience.
MARI CHA III is available for inspection in Antibes, by appointment only.
Asking price: USD 9,500,000.

Mari-Cha III: World’s coolest yachts
Published on October 13th, 2021 by Editor -->
Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and Yachting World’s ex-editor, Elaine Bunting nominated the Maxi Ketch Mari-Cha III. Here’s the report :
Fast, shapely, elegant and still formidable on the race course, Mari-Cha III was and still is one of the world’s most impressive yachts, writes Bunting.
Created to break records, this Philippe Briand design was built in 1997 for American Bob Miller. Mari-Cha III seized the outright monohull transatlantic record in 1998, the big ketch crossing the finish line at The Lizard on 24 October 1998 in 8d 23h.
She claimed a fistful of record passages including, in 1999, the fastest ever from Sydney to Hobart. Sailing the 630-mile course in 1d 18h at a then phenomenal average of 14.75 knots, but often hitting 30 knots.
Refitted with a 3m taller mast, she now races in some of the big superyacht regattas. The development of batten cars, halyard locks, outhaul claws and square top mains have increased the amount of canvas she can carry.

Open day and sea trials on sailing superyacht Mari-Cha III
The 44.7 metre fast sailing yacht Mari-Cha III , jointly listed for sale by Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage and Burgess , is hosting an open day and sea trials on Wednesday October 28 in Palma de Mallorca.
The day begins with viewings and canapés from 9am until 1:30pm when sea trials take place in the Bay of Palma until 3pm, creating a perfect opportunity to enjoy the yacht’s performance.
ABS classed, she was built in GRP by New Zealand’s Sensation Yachts to a design by French designer Phillipe Briand and launched in 1997 as one of the fastest sailing superyachts in her class. This award-winning and record-breaking yacht was originally conceived as a hybrid high performance cruising yacht, with a lavish interior so that her owner could enjoy fast, comfortable and safe cruising while entertaining his guests in style and luxury. Notably, this yacht for sale is the largest performance yacht to be sailed entirely by hand without relying on the powered systems usually employed on yachts of this size.
Mari-Cha III has a John Munford designed interior that combines classic elegance with a light and breezy feel, providing very spacious accommodation for eight guests in a large master cabin with en suite facilities, a double and a twin cabin, both with bathrooms en suite, along with a smaller cabin with upper and lower berths.
To this day she is regarded as one of the fastest ‘super sailers’ afloat and still turns heads at any anchorage, with her sleek hull and huge carbon ketch rig. Under power, a Caterpillar 600hp engine gives her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 2,500 nautical miles at 10 knots.
Mari-Cha III is asking $8,950,000.

Mari Cha III on standby for transat record
- October 13, 1998
Lionel Pean and his crew wait in New York for the weather before leaving on their transatlantic record attempt
The 44.70 m maxi ketch is on stand-by to attempt to beat the fully crewed Atlantic sailing record between New York (USA) and the Lizard (GB).
The boat will be skippered by French yachtsman Lionel Péan, since Loïck Peyron, who accepted this responsibility on condition that the record run started before October 8th 1998, stepped down. Indeed, Loïck Peyron is in preparation for the Route du Rhum, the single-handed transatlantic race between Saint Malo (Fr) and Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe (FWI) which starts on November 8th, and he cannot take the risk of being absent so close to the starting date.
Training for The Race Lionel Péan finds himself then skipper of Mari Cha III with a crew of 21, including a lot of New Zealanders. It is for this very experienced mariner an exceptional opportunity, since he is working in collaboration with the Swede Peder Silfverjhelm on a maxi monohull project of 53 metres for The Race ; the boat will be designed by Philippe Briand, who also designed Mari Cha III. Lionel Péan : “Before building a racing boat, one should race on similar boats. The only one of the kind I can try right now is Mari Cha. Living the Mari Cha experience at sea will allow me to avoid a number of errors on our future boat for The Race”.
3 records to beat The monohull record to beat has been held by the Swede Ludde Ingvall on the Grand Mistral (24 metres) Nicorette since April 1997, in 11 days, 13 hours, 22 minutes and 5 seconds, at an average speed of 10.54 knots over a distance of 2925 miles.
However Lionel Péan should also try to beat the Atlantic monohull and assisted (hydraulic and electric winches) sailing record held by Phocéa skippered by Frenchman Bernard Tapie. This record was set in July 1988 in 8 days, 3 hours and 29 minutes.
Finally, the supreme objective would be to beat the outright fully crewed Atlantic sailing record held by Serge Madec on the catamaran Jet Services V in June 1990 : 6 days, 13 hours and 3 minutes.
