At Sabre Yachts our goal has always been to fulfill the dreams and wishes of our boat owners by listening carefully to their requests and blending their ideas into exciting designs. We consider our owners and potential owners to be valued members of the Sabre Design Team. The Sabre 42 is the result of our observation that our clients want to enjoy the same levels of personal luxury and comfort that they have come to expect in their homes and in their automobiles. To that end we have developed a style of sedan, available with or without fly bridge, that permits boaters to operate from the comfort of the yacht's interior or from the openness of an optional fly bridge. Technology is advancing rapidly and our owners have come to expect that if there is a new technology available, we will employ it in our designs. We have dramatically changed the way we build our yachts and the way in which they are propelled. Traditional values such as fine craftsmanship and great looks remain, as our owners have come to expect, but below the surface things are state-of-the-art.In our fiberglass shop we have changed infusion molding. It is greener in the sense that it uses considerably less resin and cleaner in that the emissions levels are much lower. It's lighter because we use less resin and that allows the hull to run faster and use less fuel. Infusion differs from traditional hand lay-up in that all materials are loaded dry into the mold in a stack, the stack is then covered with a plastic bag and resin is infused into the stack. This creates a stronger part with higher glass to resin ratios. With Zeus Pod everything has changed and nothing remains the same. The smaller engines using vectored thrust propel the boat at higher speeds using less fuel. And when maneuvering in tight spaces a joy stick makes child's play of docking.

Since 1970, Sabre Yachts have been crafting some of the most luxurious downeast yachts in the industry. Based in Maine, the company’s founder, Roger Hewson, set out to build the finest 28-ft sailing yacht, which enabled him to produce 29-45 foot sailboat models for the next forty years.   In 1989, the “Fast Trawler” was introduced and made the Sabre name become a prominent one. In 1995, Sabre then obtained North End Composites of Rockland, Maine – a large manufacturer of marine molds and fiberglass parts. Having this relationship allowed Sabre to produce powerboat models from 38 to 66 feet with Salon Express and Fly Bridge variations using up-to-date technology and production line methods. Now Sabre acquires two boat yards, one in Raymond and the other in Rockland connected by their sister company, Back Cove Yachts.

Sabre and Back Cove employ what they call “boat parents” – these are employees who follow each boat through the manufacturing process and act as the eyes of the consumer. In order to correspond to this process, all boats are given a 600-point inspection over six separate stages, which ends with a twelve-page report to be inspected. This cycle led to the Sabre name having a reputation – a company that values its product to the most extremes. Throughout the years Sabre has become a well-known and established name by listening carefully to its owners and dealerships. Continuously refining their product, Sabre has taken pride in designing and manufacturing boats that make sense to boaters. Offering cruise speeds of 25 knots with top end speeds in excess of 30 knots, Sabre models have established themselves to have top quality features and innovative designs.

From her functional foredeck to her top-of-the-line deck hardware, the 66 Dirigo is the largest and most luxurious Sabre motor yacht to date. Debuting in 2015, the 66 is the first American-built Downeast-style motor yacht of this size. Making great impressions for any boat goer, the 66’ offers a spacious and comfortable cockpit that is suitable for any social gathering. Entering the saloon via two glass sliding doors with stainless frames, you will see an unusually open floorplan with light shining in from the glass doors aft, three windshield panes forward, and the super-sized skylight. Cherry cabinets and fine granite countertops are placed throughout making every detail catch the eye. The helm deck is elevated with a three-person L-shaped settee, which is made with classic blue leather. Below deck in the accommodations, you can find a surprising amount of standing headroom within the midships master and a VIP stateroom with a walk-around queen bed. 54 Flybridge

Sophisticated and welcoming, the 54’ Flybridge was created to offer not just a boat, but also a truly luxurious experience. Completed with a L-shaped settee and captain and mates seating, the 54’ creates an enhanced cruising experience for any boat owner. Featuring three berths, two heads, a half-up galley, and a spacious salon – this model is perfect for those looking for that weekend getaway or cocktail cruise with some friends. The cherry joinery in the salon glows from the effects of the outdoors coming in. Among the salon sits the galley a few steps down, which features clean lines and top appliances that can be seen with the light pouring through. 48 Salon Express

An ideal combination of evolution and revolution, the 48 Salon Express is most notably known for its exterior profile that gives credit to her performance. Cruising at 27 knots with an open throttle, the 48 can even reach up to 32 knots comfortably. Low sound levels make this model easily enjoyable while cruising, while the pod drives and joystick controls give every boat operator confidence to dock her in any condition. Designed with light and space in mind, the two cabin, two head layout is supplemented by a utility space forward of the engine room that can be used as additional crew space. 42 Salon Express

Established as being an excellent day boat and coastal cruiser, the Sabre 42’ offers panoramic views and was built with comfort in mind. The Sabre Salon keeps the spacious layout in the interior and on deck – giving owners comfort, luxury and ample options for entertaining and socializing. Surrounded with windows, the salon features cherry wood and fiberglass walls throughout the main cabin, which is exposed with light through the triple-paned windshield and large side windows to the aft. From the captain’s chair, there is a 360-degree visibility making it easily manageable and enjoyable. The 42’s aft deck will not disappoint with its L-shaped settee that includes an oval table and two-person bench settee that can seat up to six guests. Storage space can be accessed through the galley, that includes stainless drawers and granite counter tops. Dancin Seas is a very well maintained and cared for example of this very popular model. Indoor heated stored over the winter since new and maintained professionally all her life, originally at Dauntless Marine in Essex, CT and more recently at Safe Harbor, Rockland, ME. Over the last season significant work was completed with all systems being checked, the "little things" addressed and additional safety items added including an EPIRB.    "The Sabre 42 Salon Express is quieter, more fuel efficient and more maneuverable. She also offers more of the touches that make your boating experience exceptional.

   The Sabre 42 allows you to enjoy the same levels of personal luxury and comfort that exist in your homes and automobiles. Exceptionally low wind, vibration and noise levels allow for a very pleasurable boating experience.

   Our fiberglass shop uses infusion molding, a process that is cleaner, greener, uses less resin, and generates lower emissions levels. The hull and deck are lighter, allowing greater speed and lower fuel consumption. Unlike traditional hand lay-up, all materials are loaded dry into the mold stack, and then infused with resin. This creates a stronger part with higher glass to resin ratios.

   The Sabre 42 Salon Express is fitted with the Zeus drive system, which includes the exciting Skyhook feature. By monitoring GPS signals, the yacht can remain in a fixed position, despite current and winds. A useful tool while waiting for a bridge to open, for a fuel dock to come available or when picking up a mooring. (but not to be used when a swimmer is in the water or when docking the boat). The Skyhook system also includes an autopilot which can be integrated into the yacht’s navigational equipment.

   While we have changed the way we build our yachts and the way in which they are propelled, traditional values such as safety, fine furnishings and elegant interiors remain constant Sabre qualities."

Accommodations

The  Master Stateroom  forward features a centerline queen berth with memory foam mattress, positioned low for easy access from either side. Generous storage includes hanging lockers and numerous other drawers and lockers, including optional aircraft lockers to port and starboard. A flat screen Samsung TV and dedicated CD Stereo receiver on the bulkhead. In addition, the berth platform is hinged with an air spring assist for easy access to the large storage area underneath. A deck hatch and two opening portholes provide plenty of light and air. 

Next aft to port is the  Head with separate stall shower compartmen t with private access from owner's cabin as well as a second door from the passageway, the head is nicely finished with Riviera Corian counters, stainless sink, cherry trim, and a freshwater flush electric toilet. The shower stall is fitted with a bench seat and storage outboard.

To starboard is a  guest cabin  with a dinette that can convert to a double berth. A flat screen Samsung TV and dedicated CD Stereo receiver on the bulkhead. Drawer and locker storage forward of bunk/dinette, and two portholes and deck hatch for light and ventilation.

Continuing aft to port up two steps is the  Mid Ship Galley  that is open above to the main salon and helm windshield for a light and airy feel. Features include:

The main salon offers a central, high-visibility area for lounging and operating the boat in any weather condition. To port is an L-shaped settee, covered in Ultra Leather, and an expansive built-in chart table/counter space forward with ample storage under. Custom cherry grab rails have been added overhead in the ceiling for added safety. A focal point is the beautiful expandable high/low salon table with maple inlay. To starboard is a double settee with Ultra Leather cushions. Forward of the settee is a locker with TV that is stored inside and raises with a push button when in use. Forward is a built in bottle locker. There are Stidd chairs forward to starboard for helm and navigator; all upholstered in Ultra Leather.

   Fiberglass deep vee hull with vacuum bagged closed cell foam coring in the bottom and topsides.  The hull was Awl gripped Flag Blue with double White boot stripe and Gold cove stripe repainted 2020. The bottom is finished with a red antifouling and the props are surfaced in Prop Speed 2023.

  Molded fiberglass decks and house with end grain balsa coring and molded in beige non-skid in appropriate areas on white gelcoat.

From Camden, Maine Scott worked his way up through the ranks as he moved to Portland, Maine as the Crewed Yacht Supervisor for Stardust. Then on to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands for 7 Years as the Caribbean Yacht Sales Manager for Sunsail. He then moved to Ft Lauderdale, Florida to take on the position of Global Sales Manager for Leopard Catamarans for 7 years. 2005 Sabre 42 Express Introduced in 2004, the Sabre 42 Express (called the Sabreline 42 until 2007) embodies the graceful styling, luxurious accommodations, and high-quality construction common to all Sabre yachts. The 42 is a particularly handsome yacht, and her low-profile cabin top conceals a considerable amount of living space below. Built on a modified-V hull with a wide beam and prop pockets, the focal point of the 42 Express is her semi-enclosed pilothouse with its swivel helm and companion seats, folding teak table, and full wet bar. Below decks, the traditional two-stateroom interior is highlightedwith varnished cherry wood cabinetry, leather upholstery, and a beautiful teak-and-holly sole. The master stateroom  is fitted with a pedestal berth . The guest stateroom contains a double berth, and both cabins share a large head with a circular shower stall. A transom door, radar mast, and bow pulpit are standard. Note that the hull of the Sabre 42 is built with vacuum bagged PVC foam core making it light and extremely strong. Yanmar 500 hp inboard diesels cruise at 25 knots topping out at 29 knots. Helen E is equipped with virtually every option offered by Sabre. Hull repainted 2011. House batteries (2) replaced with 8 D AGM batteries in 2016. Engine batteries (group 31) replaced 2015. 2012 Sabre 42 Sedan The Sabre 42 2012 has a Flag Blue Awlgrip painted haul that was done in 2014.  She has 417 hours on the twin Cummins 380 hp  Zeus drive engines that will cruise in the 22 to 24 range.  With the Zeus drive you do not need a bow or stern thruster just the joy stick and a soft touch for control in tight spots.  The Island double berth is forward with the head to port.  The second stateroom is a dinette that converts to double berth.  The galley is to port and is down two steps from the salon. The helm is to starboard and has two Stidd seats.  There are two Garmin 5215 GPS screens for Radar and navigation, autopilot, VHF and Skyhook (Zeus System).

Sabre Yachts builds high-quality sail and motor yachts at its manufacturing facilities in Raymond, Maine. Founded in 1970 with the motto “Crafted in Maine Tradition,” Sabre has built over 4,000 hulls. More than half of Sabre’s production is dedicated to powerboats. Sabre Yachts was founded by Roger Hewson in 1970. The company began with Hewson’s 28-foot sailing yacht, built with production line methods and fiberglass technology. A sister company of Back Cove Yachts, Sabre Yachts builds sail and motor yachts at its two facilities in Raymond, Maine. Sabre currently manufactures three models of sailing yachts ranging from 36 to 45 feet.

In 1989, Sabre expanded its market with a tri-cabin motor yacht, the first Sabre 36 “Fast Trawler”. Sabre’s motor yacht model line is available in Salon Express and Fly Bridge styles, ranging from 38 to 54 feet. Currently, more than half of Sabre’s production is dedicated to powerboats.

Sabreline 42 Flybridge Sedan

During many years spent aboard traditionally styled and built boats, I accepted (often unwillingly) that comfort and function would be sacrificed in the name of aesthetic appeal and that dated building techniques would limit performance. Yes, it was a joy to leave a mooring and watch the yacht gracefully tug on her lines, adding a touch of beauty to the anchorage. But good luck trying to set down a cup of coffee at the helm, find a place to properly arrange electronics or get comfortable in seating that resembles a church pew.

There is a middle ground between the aesthetic appeal of classic yachts and modern comfort, and Sabre-reaching out to those of us who prematurely surrendered to compromise-has found it. The builder has been perfecting the formula since introducing its first powerboat, a 36-foot double cabin model, in 1989. Today’s models include a 34-foot sedan, a 36-foot express and 43- and 47-foot trawler-style models, as well as the latest launch: the Sabreline 42 Flybridge Sedan.

This yacht has a 14-foot, 4-inch beam that allows for a 100-square-foot cockpit, rivaling the space on many convertibles the same size and larger. Yet the added interior volume does not hinder the 42’s lines. Her subtle sheer and unobtrusive house create a classic, purposeful appeal. Though the optional hardtop is a little harsh on the eyes from some angles, I would opt for it, the shelter it provides and the extra overhead space to stow a dinghy. The varnished teak caprail and eyebrow accents provide enough classic styling to keep the Sabreline true to her Maine roots.

Powering out of Government Cut in Miami, the modified deep-V hull with 16 degrees of deadrise aft planed effortlessly. The prop pockets reduce the angle of the drive gear, giving the 42 a shallow 3-foot, 9-inch draft. Put simply, this yacht’s handling characteristics are superb. She tracks well, backs like a car, is dry, turns within her own wake and meets any chop with a gentle motion.

Long after the sea trial, I found myself telling friends about the great ride we’d had. Several months after the test, I discussed the ride with Pat Clark of Boatworks Yacht Sales (a Sabreline dealer). Pat had sold hull number two, which left after only a few days of commissioning for her maiden voyage from Rowayton, Connecticut, to Key West. The captain, like me, was excited after his first days on board.

“He had no problems with the boat, zero, and averaged 23 knots,” Pat said. “The captain was raving.”

Our test boat had the optional 420 hp Yanmar 6CX diesels, which are slim and allow for a workable engineroom. Accessing the outboard side of the engines for service won’t result in handstands or bruised knuckles. Sabre’s engineers properly laid out all the mechanical components for easy access. A 12kW Westerbeke generator is standard, and a Northern Lights is optional. Some similar-size boats offer only an 8kW generator, which may not be sufficient for cruising with air conditioning in southern latitudes.

While piloting the 42, I peered over the horizon and wished we could keep going to the Bahamas. It was obvious a lot of thought went into the helm and flying bridge design. “We mocked the helm up several times before we went into production,” said Bentley Collins, Sabre’s marketing manager.

A foot recess allows a more natural, comfortable seating position than you’ll find on many other yachts. With the transom door open, the line of sight aft from the upper helm chair is unobstructed. You can easily judge the swim platform’s distance from the dock. The line of sight over the bow is also excellent. The molded-in electronics locker will easily house a chart plotter, radar, VHF, autopilot, depth/speed gauge, GPS and a few other gadgets. A settee with table is abaft the helm, but the area could benefit from a few extra handholds to grab onto in a seaway.

The hull is laid up with balsa-core on the sides and bottom, followed by knitted, biaxial fiberglass laminates. Sabre vacuum-bags the balsa-core to the hull to ensure a tight, void-free bond. Our test boat’s navy blue hull showed no signs of print-through, and the glass- work on the deck was well executed.

The 42’s beam is carried well forward and affords an honest two-stateroom, galley-down layout. The master stateroom with island berth has a large hanging locker, a bureau, good ventilation and direct access to the head. The head is spacious and includes a 25-by-47-inch shower stall with a seat and locker, Corian counters and an electric freshwater toilet.

Opposite, the guest cabin has two single berths, a good-size hanging locker and two hinged doors. The wide passageway gives the stateroom an open feel during the day, although I would choose sliding pocket doors to prevent crowding others in the passageway.

The down galley has plenty of counter space, a double stainless-steel sink, a built-in wastebasket, a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, a two-burner electric cooktop and a microwave/convection oven. The saloon is nicely finished with an L-shape settee, a dining counter (great for chart work), an entertainment center and a lower helm.

Like others who dock short-handed, I often prefer operating the boat from the lower station. Sabre makes doing so easy. The sliding door adjacent to the helm station allows for quick deck access to tend lines, and a beefy rub rail lets you use pilings to pivot and turn into a tight slip. There is a good 360-degree line of sight, even aft through the flying bridge ladder. Gauges are arranged for easy reference, and electronics space is good.

Sabre and its Sabreline series have successfully carved a niche, teaching even a die-hard traditionalist like myself that classic styling doesn’t necessarily mean antiquated design and techniques. It’s no wonder the builder continues to carry a significant order backlog. Some things are worth the wait.
