Install A Solar Vent

A solar vent is a great addition to any boat that has any sort of below deck area.

Solar vent

A solar vent requires no external power, the vent will ensure air circulation and help prevent the formation of mold and mildew, especially when the boat is left closed up for extended periods. Some vents can run in either direction so it's often possible to fit two, one to draw air into the space and another to extract further enhancing efficiency. This is an easy project that almost anyone with a basic set of tools can achieve, although you may need to purchase a hole saw of the correct size. Carefully read any instructions that come with your particular model before starting the installation as they may differ slightly from those shown in the photographs.

The vent I installed was a 4-1/2-inch Marinco model purchased from West Marine .

Tape a bag or sheet of plastic under the hatch before starting to catch any dust or debris.

Tech Support

Degree of Difficulty: Easy

  • Silicone sealant or butyl tape
  • Masking tape
  • Screwdriver

Masking tape outside surface

Step 1: Start by sticking masking tape to the outside surface , center section of the hatch as this helps prevent chipping of the polycarbonate hatch panel when cutting through with the hole saw.

Marking the center point

Step 2: Mark the center point by drawing across the diagonals and noting where the lines cross. Check your measurements carefully, a vent positioned off-center will stick out like a sore thumb.

Drilling through lexan

Step 3: Position the pilot bit of the hole saw on the center mark. You may find a punch helpful. Carefully drill through the Lexan using a slow speed. You’ll likely need a plug-in drill as rechargeables often lack sufficient power. You may also need to periodically reverse the hole saw to allow it to cool and prevent the Lexan from melting in the teeth.

Test fit of outer mounting

Step 4: After removing the tape, test fit the outer mounting flange into the drilled hole. Drill for the mounting bolts or screws using a drill of the correct size; the size is often given in the vent installation instructions.

Apply bead of sealant

Step 5: Apply a bead of sealant to the underside of the mounting flange, or use butyl tape as I have here, before affixing the top flange with screws. Don't overtighten the screws or you risk cracking the Lexan.

Cleaning off excess sealant

Step 6: Press the flange into place, and clean off any excess sealant or tape using a scraper followed by a suitable solvent.

Install solar vent in place

Step 7: Install the solar vent in place by screwing it into the mounting flange. Note that this particular vent has a neoprene gasket as an additional measure to prevent water intrusion.

Screw on inner trim ring

Step 8: Screw on the inner trim ring from inside the cabin , noting that unlike the outer ring, this one has a neoprene gasket in place of any kind of sealant.

Completed solar vent

Step 9: The completed job showing the gap below the "mushroom" where the air is vented from below decks.

Gear Review: Nicro Day/Night Plus Solar Vent Fan

www.sailfarlivefree.com

Steve L22188

Nicro vents were 15 years old and still working on my 1988 O'Day 302 )before I sold it last month after 19 great years.) Smartest thing I did when I replaced the Nicro vents years ago: configured one to bring in fresh air and then configured the second one to exhaust the air. Constant air flow. That boat rarely smelled funky and I'm convinced the constant air movement helped lots.

Thanks. That’s two votes for Nicro

jviss

I am not a fan. I had a couple of Nicros when I bought my boat. Someone had installed them right in the middle of the two overhead hatches. They were't working, and they were ugly. I tried to get them working, new batteries, etc., to no avail. There were articles online for how to fit new motors, etc., but I lost interest. Bought new, clear hatches and moved on. Mine has four stainless cowls to dorades, and the boat turns around twice a day with the tide as it's on a mooring, so by angling the cowls I get good airflow. I can see how folks would want them in some situations, but, Geez, it would be nice if someone would make high-quality, repairable, rebuildable units that had that "yacht" look and feel.

I have a nicro and it is great that it keeps air flowing in the boat even when you are not around. jviss is right that they are big, take up a lot of space, and obstruct a lot of space in clear hatches, but you can install them elsewhere if you have room. Then again, if you have room, dorads provide better air flow. I would like a small vent with a separate solar panel, but I don't know if any except DIY versions.

Thanks @jviss and @JBP-PA I like the idea of a dorade and will probably add one of those low profile ones at some point but I keep my boat in a slip so I don't think I want to count exclusively on wind flow. I had a solar vent on my Hunter 26 and it worked great. My cabin was always fresh and never had that musty closed up "boat smell". So I'm thinking of adding a Nicro and maybe later, two low profile dorades.

Stainless Steel Solar Powered Ventilator

Low profile stainless steel solar powered ventilator for boat cabin air circulation for either drawing air inwards or sucking air outwards.

Stainless Steel Solar Powered Ventilator with Rechargeable Battery

Low profile stainless steel solar powered ventilator for boat cabin air circulation for either drawing air inwards or sucking air outwards. Each fan comes with two fan blades that can be interchanged to change the direction of air flow, for example, the air can be drawn into the boat or sucked out of the boat.

The entry level solar fan runs continuously when daylight is shown on to the solar panel, the power generated runs the fan directly. When no light is available the fan will stop.

The solar fan with the rechargeable battery storage can be switch on and off as you please. It will run continuously from the solar panel when switched on and charge the battery at the same time for use when no light is available. The fan itself can be switched off at any time and the solar panel will collect and recharge the battery for power use at a later time, for example, during the night when it will run until the power is consumed. When light is available again, the battery will charge and the cycle will continue.

There is no wiring necessary for either model and the solar vent can be installed with the three fixing holes around the vent.

For large solar projects in Elektrostal', it is recommended to contact a local solar company that can handle the installation and maintenance of the solar panels. Local solar companies are well-versed with regional regulations and climate conditions, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

For smaller projects, you have several options to buy solar panels:

  • Purchase solar panels through certified solar companies that have deals from top manufacturers.
  • Buy DIY kits available at home electronics online stores.
  • Get solar panels directly from the manufacturers themselves.

Before making a decision, consider factors such as technology compatibility, features, and the expertise of installers. Researching different brands and dealers can help you make an informed choice for your solar panel purchase.

Here are questions you can ask solar contractors in Elektrostal':

  • What types of solar panels do you offer, and do you have experience in installing solar equipment?
  • Can you provide estimates for the number of solar panels needed, the overall costs, and the payback period?
  • Are you properly licensed, insured, and do you have experienced in-house installers?
  • Where do your solar products come from, and are they sourced from reputable suppliers?
  • Which solar panel system is suitable for my needs - grid-tied or grid-tied with energy storage?
  • What is your company’s track record, and do your technicians hold relevant certifications?
  • What are the benefits of going solar, and is my roof suitable for solar panels in terms of sunlight exposure and available space?

Asking these questions will help you gather important information and choose the right solar company for your specific requirements.
