Learn About Leonard DiCaprio's Yacht: Topaz

When you think about Leonardo DiCaprio, images of an eco-conscious crusader who is out to improve the health of the planet may first emerge. Recent rumors that Leo plans to attend the 2018 World Cup events in Brazil aboard a yacht seem a bit contradictory because of the pollution that these floating luxury hotels churn into the air and water.

While some have criticized him for indulging in a bit of heaven at the expense of the planet, if he wasn't doing it, somebody else would be. At least he's making an attempt to help the situation when he can. All of that aside, we were curious to find out more about Leonardo DiCaprio's Yacht, and here is what we discovered.

Leo doesn't own the yacht

DiCaprio hasn't actually purchased a yacht. Instead, he rented it from owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mansour is a billionaire politician who is the current prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

The mega yacht was custom built according to his grand and luxurious specifications and named the Topaz. Until recently, the interior of the yacht has remained a well-guarded secret. We've learned some juicy tidbits that we're happy to share.

Specifications of the Topaz

The super yacht measures a total of 453 feet in length with a cost of more than $200 million in USD to build and an estimated value of $678 million. This isn't the biggest yacht that Mr. DiCaprio has chartered, but it's likely to be one of the most luxurious.

The yacht is powered by four M90 diesel engines which generate approximately 48,000 horse power. The ship made its maiden launch in 2012 and according to sources, DiCaprio also rented it in 2014 just 2 years into its service run.

The Topaz is rumored to be one of the most extravagant yachts in the world . It offers smooth sailing with the installation of zero speed stabilizers. It comes fully outfitted with lifts that ferry guests comfortably among the eight deck levels to the host of amenities that are scattered throughout the massive vessel.

It is decked out in full luxury and comfort with a cinema, two hot tubs, air conditioning throughout, three swimming pools, a fitness hall, underwater lights, an ample sized conference room and a well hidden interior design that is left up to our imaginations.

Leonardo DiCaprio's guest list aboard the Topaz

Leo won't be making the trip alone. We've learned that he has a list of guests that will accompany him on thee yacht as he enjoys the football tournament in Brazil.

There were 21 of his friends, all of millionaire status mind you, invited to enjoy the amenities. It's been reported that DiCaprio and his pals hopped a jet and flew to Rio de Janeiro to arrive one day prior to kick off of the Brazil World cup.

The controversy the rental has stirred

While some are happy that Leo had a nice luxury vacation , others are upset about the seeming nose thumb to environmentalists who think his actions are careless.

There has been a degree of judgment and sentiments of disappointment to outright damnation sent his way. Activists point out that Leo's private jet that made thee 8000 mile trip left a hefty carbon footprint. This is besides the emissions put out from the luxury mega yacht. They're citing his actions as not being environmentally responsible.

Why the uproar?

The backlash has come after the fact that DiCaprio made a plea to viewers to work with one another to help fight climate change when he accepted his first ever Oscar award. DiCaprio's involvement in Hollywood environmentalism can't be denied.

He dedicates time to fly here and there to pick up awards for his contributions to help clean up the environment, but when he flies to and fro, his carbon footprint grows.

There has been a volley of insults and comments disapproving of Leo's actions, but isn't this how Hollywood environmentalism works? It's kinda tough to get to Brazil without flying or chartering a boat to take you there.

It's a drama that has been ongoing since Leo's plans were first revealed but it seems that he could at least score a few points for encouraging us all to make some kind of effort.

It's not easy being the center of attention and there are times when best intentions draw a backlash of negativism, despite the fact that most of us rely on some type of carbon emitting transportation resources.

I Salute Leonardo DiCaprio and His Big-Ass Yacht

The man is having the summer vacation of our dreams.

preview for Killers Of The Flower Moon - Official Teaser (Paramount Pictures)

This week, he did exactly that, while cruising around the Amalfi coast in his private yacht. DiCaprio invited his dad, stepmom, and niece along for the ride. Some may find that excessive! They might wonder, Why charter a big-ass boat for just four people? Wouldn’t a smaller ship be easier to manage? I think the answer is pretty simple: Because it's fun! And Leonardo DiCaprio has yacht money! I’d do the same. Wouldn’t you?

Page Six obtained pictures from the affair, showing DiCaprio lounging around his floating estate and jumping in the choppy water.. Thankfully, there were no icebergs around to ruin the fun. This feels like a nice moment for the actor to relax after promoting his latest movie, Killers of the Flower Moon , at the Cannes Film Festival. (When I want to relax, I walk around the block and get a Big Gulp from 7/11. But, alas, this isn’t about me, and I doubt Leonardo DiCaprio drinks Big Gulps from 7/11.)

The actor's upcoming movie is based on David Grann’s popular nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI . DiCaprio stars in the project alongside Robert DeNiro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and Lily Gladstone. The crime drama follows a series of murders that affect the indigenous Osage Nation after oil is found on their land. When more and more people go missing, the FBI swoops in to investigate.

Killers of the Flower Moon will premiere in theaters on October 2. That gives good ol’ Leo at least a few more months to relax before hopping back into movie-star mode. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s World Cup 2014 Party on TOPAZ

By Editorial Team   16 June 2014

After throwing a wild 80’s themed bash on the world’s fifth largest superyacht in April, it has been reported that Leonardo DiCaprio once again stepped on board the 147m/482’ TOPAZ to celebrate the 2014 World Cup in true Brazilian party style.

Sporting a brightly coloured Brazil scarf, DiCaprio was seen enjoying the action unfold amongst the stands of football fans during the 2014 World Cup ’s opening game between Brazil and Croatia last Thursday. He was then seen heading back to marina in Rio where superyacht TOPAZ is berthed, where he and around 20 of his friends stepped on board to relax and party late into the night.

According to the Daily Mail, it is thought that the Hollywood actor has again chartered the yacht for the famous football tournament with permission from her Owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emitates and owner of Manchester City FC. Since her launch from Lürssen in 2012, she has very occasionally been made available for rent to select clients and it seems that DiCaprio has taken a particular liking the yacht, although it is easy to see why.

TOPAZ’s sheer size allows for an impressive offering of amenities on board that include two heli-pads, two swimming pools and a cinema.  Apart from her highly luxurious accommodation and experienced crew of 20, she is a perfect example of how a luxury charter yacht can be the perfect way to enjoy events around the world in comfort and privacy.

Leonardo DiCaprio Rents $678 Million Yacht To Watch The World Cup

leonardo dicaprio yacht rental

Some of us might splurge on a new telly or a few pints to make the most of the World Cup but Leonardo DiCaprio is taking luxury to a whole new level.

The Inception actor borrowed the fifth largest superyacht in the world, the 482-foot Topaz, for him and a group of friends for the Brazil v Croatia game this week. According to the Daily Mail , the impressive $678 million ship was birthed in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday while the star headed to San Paulo for the match.

It’s not known whether DiCaprio is paying to use the yacht or whether it was a gift from its owner Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the owner of Manchester City football club.

Leonardo Dicaprio Loves Him a Yacht Party, But Does He Actually Own a Luxury Boat?

Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio may have featured in the popular film Titanic , but he certainly hasn't let that scare him away from spending some time on massive boats. In fact, Leo gets spotted quite frequently on luxury yachts . But, does the Oscar-winning actor actually own a megayacht, or a regular yacht, for that matter?

Turns out, he doesn't. He still enjoys the yachting lifestyle though, thanks to the variety of different yacht charter companies out there. Leo's no billionaire , but with his multimillion-dollar net worth, he could definitely go out and buy a decent-sized yacht. That said, renting one is a much more affordable route, especially since that avoids the cost of upkeep.

Back in 2012, Leo brought out Wolf of Wall Street co-star Jonah Hill to enjoy the experience of a rented luxury vessel. Of course, what's a yacht party without beautiful models? Hill was no doubt blown away by the whole experience, but it seemed like just another day to DiCaprio.

In 2013, it was reported that DiCaprio rented a yacht for a week for the cool price of $410,000. Considering the boat later sold for $42 million, it doesn't seem like too bad of a deal. That said, DiCaprio garnered even more attention after he rented the sixth-largest superyacht in the world. The Topaz is worth approximately $527 million, featuring eight different decks, a swimming pool, jacuzzi, movie theater, and two helicopter pads. Apparently, Leo brought 21 of his closest millionaire friends along to enjoy the World Cup. Eventually, they ditched the yacht for a private jet straight to Rio de Janeiro in order to catch the kick off in Brazil.

In 2020, pictures obtained by Page Six, and later posted all over social media, showed DiCaprio and his girlfriend Camila Morrone heading out on a yacht to celebrate her 23rd birthday. Other stars such as Olympic snowboarder Shaun White and actors Kevin Connolly and Lukas Haas were in attendance as they sailed toward Malibu to enjoy some fun in the sun.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvrZkjjar0/?hl=en

Now, Leo has actually been called out a few times by fans. He's a strong advocate for the environment and climate change, but his words seem to have less of an impact the more he gets spotted on these massive yachts. They don't exactly have the smallest carbon footprint, but this could also act as part of the reason that he doesn't personally own one.

Regardless, Leonardo DiCaprio undoubtedly loves living the superyacht life from time to time. The guy's had a wildly successful career, so I don't blame him for enjoying some of the finer things in life. I'm just going to go ahead and add "attending a DiCaprio yacht party" to my bucket list.

Just Try to Keep Leonardo DiCaprio Off a Yacht, I Dare You

leonardo dicaprio yacht rental

By Kenzie Bryant

Image may contain Human Person Vehicle Transportation Yacht Aircraft Airplane and Leonardo DiCaprio

Did you have a nice little New Year’s holiday? Did you watch the whole of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City in one big gulp? Maybe you drove somewhere new since flying is so complicated these days. Off to a ski resort a few hours north as the interstate flies, hm? Spent a couple precious hours on this earth drying out cold, wet socks from the last run down the mountain, maybe? Well, that all sounds lovely, but unfortunately for mere mortals everywhere, it will never be as lovely as what Leonardo DiCaprio is up to.

Leonardo DiCaprio! He of the movies fame. You know, Titanic. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Catch Me If You Can. The Revenant. Most recently, the Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up . This guy, would you believe it, was on a yacht. Of course you believe it. This guy loves yachts . The man simply cannot get enough of them. He is like an oenophile, traversing the lands, grabbing up whatever fermented grapes Dionysus has left us down here. Like, if there is a rare and elegant wine, he’s tried it or wants to try it—but with yachts.

So this week he’s been chartering Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli ’s yacht, which is called Vava II, in St. Barts. The Vava II has its own Wikipedia page . It’s reported to cost $150 million and sleep about 50 guests and crew members, and frankly, that’s a lot for a boat! Those things are on water!

Friend and capo of the fabled Pussy Posse Lukas Haas was there, as was DiCaprio’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Camila Morrone. Per the Daily Mail , they even went shopping with the editor in chief of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, which I imagine is something like shooting hoops with LeBron James.

Before all the shopping and the lounging on deck chairs with Haas and the strolling around St. Barts, DiCaprio celebrated New Year’s on the island alongside Jeff Bezos and partner Lauren Sanchez, Drake, and yacht owner himself Bertarelli. It is where this historic photo was taken.

Leonardo DiCaprio Seen Living It Up with Friends on a Yacht in St. Bart's During New Year's Vacation

Leonardo DiCaprio was photographed with four friends aboard a yacht off the coast of St. Bart's on Monday

leonardo dicaprio yacht rental

Leonardo DiCaprio is ringing in the New Year overseas.

The Oscar winner was spotted on a yacht off the island of Saint Barthélemy onMonday, surrounded by friends.

In photos taken of the Caribbean excursion, a shirtless DiCaprio, 48, is seen taking in the sights from onboard the vessel alongside four other individuals.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human-interest stories.

After DiCaprio parted ways with ex-girlfriend Camila Morrone in August after more than four years together, the actor was seen spending time with Gigi Hadid .

In September, a source told PEOPLE that DiCaprio "is taken with Gigi." They explained that the supermodel, 27, "is the type of woman he is usually attracted to" and said that "they sort of run in the same high-profile circles and would see each other at events , clubs, restaurants and gatherings."

DiCaprio and Hadid were last seen together in New York City in November, when they were spotted leaving the same restaurant .

Late last month, DiCaprio and actress Victoria Lamas were seen leaving The Birds Streets Club on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, separately, before they entered a car together.

A source told PEOPLE they were leaving a "big group dinner," adding, "They were also joined by a number of other people in the car."

After the Titanic actor was spotted with the 23-year-old actress in late December, her dad, Lorenzo Lamas , told the New York Post that she is "very smitten."

Lorenzo, 64, added of his daughter and DiCaprio, "I know she likes him very much. I think they met last month. I'm not sure of the circumstances, but that's what she told me."

He also noted that he offered Victoria some fatherly advice.

"I told her to treat the relationship like a holiday — just enjoy it as much as you can for as long as it lasts," Lorenzo said. "And if it lasts for more than a typical holiday, great. But if not, then just guard your heart, you know? Because she's very young."

According to Lorenzo, however, things between the pair are not serious .

He expressed to the Post , "She's fond of him, obviously. But they're not dating, and she does not want that out there because that would be really bad. It'd be embarrassing for her if he should happen to read something that said that they're dating and they're not."

Leo Dicaprio Hamptons estate

Even by Hollywood standards Leonardo DiCaprio was living the high life in the Hamptons this weekend. Sources tell us he rented a historic $28.9 million estate in Sagaponack Village .

Somewhat living up to his title role of Jay Gatsby in 2013’s the “Great Gatsby,” DiCaprio — who attended Michael Rubin’s star-studded bash and spent two nights in a row hanging out with Gigi Hadid — stayed in the 21,000 square foot spread with nine bedrooms and ten full baths, says a source.

The luxe home also featured a swimming pool, pool house, tennis courts, gym, spa, sauna, cold plunge, and theater, should DiCaprio and his posse felt like putting on “The Revenant.”

The estate also has two barns, one with an art studio, recording studio, and its own gym. (One hates to have to trek all the way to the main house to use the gym!).

The Russian city of Magnitogorsk ‘was the October revolution itself, the socialist revolution, Stalin’s revolution’.

Story of cities #20: the secret history of Magnitogorsk, Russia's steel city

Designed for Stalin as the world’s first completely planned city, Magnitogorsk has yet to confront its controversial past – from the forced labour that helped build it in record time, to the severe pollution that has plagued its residents

In July 1931, Ibragim Akhmetzyanov arrived in Magnitogorsk in a wooden boxcar with his wife and eight children. The sight that greeted them was bleak.

In the middle of the frigid, windswept steppe, a cluster of tents and ramshackle barracks stood at the foot of the ominous “Magnetic Mountain”, a landform so full of iron ore that compasses could not function near it and birds avoided flying over it.

Between the mountain and the shallow Ural River, workers were erecting the crown jewel of the Soviet leader’s first Five-Year Plan, the Stalin Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Complex – one of the largest steel plants in the world.

The “first builders” of Magnitogorsk have been lauded in poetry, film and song; Soviet propaganda stressed the contribution of young communist volunteers and members of the Komsomol, a national youth movement that started largely in Magnitogorsk.

But Akhmetzyanov was not a volunteer. He was a dispossessed peasant who had been kicked off his farm in Tatarstan by the communist authorities and sent to Magnitogorsk, where he and his family were forced to work and live in a settlement surrounded by guards and barbed wire. It was the forced labour of these so-called “special resettlers” that made the record-quick construction of the plant possible.

Selling cabbages from a motorcycle in Magnitogorsk, 1993.

They lived in tents for the autumn, then an earth-floored barrack through the harsh winter and hot summer, without basic amenities or medical care. According to Akhmetzyanov’s grandson Salavat, a historian who recently wrote a book about these special resettlers, 10,000 people died of hunger, cold and disease in the first five years of construction, including a son and daughter born to Ibragim and his wife.

“The story of thousands of resettlers has been forgotten,” Akhmetzyanov says. “When it comes to the war we don’t hide our losses and retreats, but here, on the topic of the 1930s, they’ve been tiptoed around.”

“If the regime had been interested in the people, the city would have built on less aggressive deadlines, and without the colossal amount of human casualties,” says Gennady Vasilyev, a local history teacher who compiles “books of memory” with the names of Magnitogorsk residents who suffered from Soviet repressions. “We have a saying that the victors aren’t judged, but this we do need to judge.”

Gennady Vasilyev compiles ‘books of memory’.

Celebrated as the “steel heart of the motherland”, Magnitogorsk is a city that has yet to face down its past – and not just the history of the forced labour during its construction. Decades of heavy industry have polluted the air and water, but few questions are asked of the now privately owned Magnitogorsk Iron and Steelworks (MMK). More than 30,000 of the city’s 400,000 residents still work at MMK, and with official unemployment at only 1.44% , the city hasn’t suffered the urban blight of other run-down factory towns.

Magnitogorsk lies near the northern edge of the steppe: the tawny, featureless grasslands that extend west toward the Volga River and east into nearby Kazakhstan. Many people commute from Europe to Asia for work each day, travelling from the residential western side of the Ural River to the steel mill on the eastern side. A small Cossack fort was founded here in 1743, but the area remained mostly untouched by the outside world until the “year of the great break” in 1929, when the Bolsheviks made it the focal point of their first five-year plan to pull the still largely agrarian Soviet Union into the industrial age.

Iron and steel became the watchwords of the era. “We are becoming a country of metal,” Stalin declared, and this metal was to be forged in Magnitogorsk. It became the very embodiment of the push to create an industrialised, socialist society.

“Magnitogorsk was no mere business for generating profits; it was a device for transforming the country: its geography, its industry, and above all its people,” historian Stephen Kotkin writes in his book Magnetic Mountain. “Magnitogorsk was the October revolution itself, the socialist revolution, Stalin’s revolution.”

Ironically, to make this socialist revolution, the Soviet Union had to call on its capitalist rival, hiring the American firm Arthur McKee & Co in 1930 to design the steel plant and train Soviet engineers to build it. Magnitogorsk was reportedly inspired by the US Steel plant in Gary, Indiana, then the largest in the world. The first years of construction, however, were chaos, as the impossibly short deadlines set by Moscow collided with the total lack of infrastructure, chronic fires and a shortage of skilled workers and equipment.

Magnitogorsk department store, 1959.

Magnitogorsk’s builders staged “socialist competitions” to complete tasks on unbelievably tight deadlines. The results were rarely of top quality: a competition between teams on the left and right banks of the river in 1930 produced a dam that wasn’t deep enough, and was eventually submerged by a larger one. But the main thing was that another victory could be chalked up to the Bolshevik project, and workers were filled with “labour enthusiasm”, as Kotkin reports.

All the labour enthusiasm in the world couldn’t keep workers amid the harsh conditions, however, and tens of thousands fled. The state solved this labour shortage through a campaign to dispossess allegedly wealthy “kulak” peasants of their land, which began in 1930 and expanded in 1931.

The first boxcars of “special resettlers” arrived in Magnitogorsk in May 1931. According to Vasilyev, 40,000 families of dispossessed peasants were sent to the Chelyabinsk region, many of them Turkish-speaking Tatars and mostly to Magnitogorsk. Their “special” settlements, encircled in barbed wire, were Magnitogorsk’s own small islands in the vast “Gulag archipelago” of labour camps described by Alexander Solzhenitsyn . In addition, more than 26,000 non-political convicts had been sent to Magnitogorsk by the end of 1933.

The overcrowded, mostly dirt-floored tents and ramshackle barracks in which early residents lived were buffeted by blizzards in the winter and dust storms in the summer. Rats, bed bugs and lice tormented their occupants. Other newcomers reverted to rural ways, building mud huts dug deep into the ground.

Crowded, cold, filthy conditions, combined with the lack of clean water and scarcity of food and medical care, resulted in epidemics of typhus, malaria and scarlet fever. Meanwhile, party officials enjoyed a comparatively luxurious life in the wooded “American town” that was originally built for specialists from the United States in 1930.

“Special carts went around the barracks and asked, ‘Do you have any dead today?’ And everyday they took bodies,” Akhmetzyanov says of the winter of 1931. “Children died first of all, and the elderly.”

A monument commemorating Magnitogorsk’s contribution to victory in the second world war.

While the existence of the special resettlers isn’t denied, it’s not readily discussed either, and a recent drive to put up a monument to them has yet to bear fruit. The administration of one district barred Vasilyev from speaking with descendants there, and he can’t find a sponsor to publish his books on a larger scale. Even today, the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steelworks website makes no mention of this forced labour on its history page.

“We need to immerse children in this topic; they are the ancestors, they should know who they are,” Vasilyev says. “The subtitle of each of my books is, ‘This should never happen again.’”

“People say, ‘Why dig this up, even if it’s true?’” Akhmetzyanov explains. “The problem is that no one is giving money; all the study of these topics is done on [researchers’] own funds.”

The ‘socialist city’

The factory was erected in record time thanks to the first builders’ labour. On 31 January 1932, in temperatures below -20 degrees, blast furnace number one was blown in; the following year, it had to be shut down again and completely rebuilt.

Although officials were reluctant to allocate labour or resources away from the factory, a city still had to be built around it. According to a 1930 Magnitostroi propaganda pamphlet, the city would be the centre of a “deep inculcation of the new socialist way of life”. To this end, it was to be the world’s first completely planned city.

In 1930, Moscow enlisted the help of German architect Ernst May, who had won acclaim building egalitarian housing settlements in Frankfurt with standardised, prefabricated materials. May drafted a plan for a linear city, with a green belt between bands of residential and industrial areas. But when he arrived on site in October 1930, May found that not only was the designated site unsuitable for his plan, but that local officials had already begun construction.

Inside the MMK iron and steel works; more than 30,000 of Magnitogorsk’s 400,000 residents still work here.

The supposedly highly planned building process turned out to be highly erratic. Constrained by the existing construction and the factory facilities, May built what has become known as the Sotsgorod , or “socialist city”; a superblock of rectangular three- and four-storey flat buildings, south of the factory.

The large open areas in between the buildings – designed on May’s principle that every resident should have the maximum amount of light – are not well-adapted to the local climate, exposing all who come and go to the bitterly cold winds of the Ural steppe. Although the buildings are run-down, flats here are still in demand today, since they are constructed of brick rather than concrete panels like many later flat blocks. The site has now been proposed for Unesco World Heritage status.

At the time, May’s standardised, unembellished buildings were criticised as too plain. When commissar of industry Sergo Ordzhonikidze visited the site in 1933, he was disgusted by May’s superblock, which due to the lack of plumbing was surrounded by smelly outhouses, declaring, “You have named some manure a socialist city.” He ordered residential construction to be moved to the west bank of the river, but amid the vagaries of the Soviet leadership – not even the smallest decisions could be made without Moscow’s approval – a masterplan for this second attempt at a socialist city was slow to emerge.

Photo project by local newspaper Magnitogorsk Metal.

Meanwhile, settlements of rickety barracks kept springing up next to each new enterprise that was built on the east bank, earning names such as “Fertiliser Settlement,” “Ore-Enriching Station” and “Lattice-Wood Town”, and stretching the city out more than 12 miles from north to south. The start of the first streetcar in 1935, bearing a portrait of Stalin – Magnitogorsk would eventually have the largest streetcar network in the country after Leningrad – was not enough to make up for the lack of paved roads and vehicles. By 1939 Magnitogorsk, already a city of 200,000, still had only one temporary hospital, and robberies were common. Far from a well-designed socialist city, this was an urban planning catastrophe with the chaotic outlaw atmosphere of a frontier town.

On the other hand, the housing and social services, while always too scarce, began to establish a more collectivised way of life, with public baths, laundries, cafeterias and nurseries. Along with the landmark Magnit cinema, a dozen workers’ clubs with libraries, games, movie projectors and study circles were built to try to broaden the cultural horizons of the poorly educated masses, while also teaching them the Soviet creed.

This Soviet urban ideal was eventually realised on the west bank of the river, with its wide prospects, squares and promenades, and abundance of five-storey “Khrushchev” flat blocks, laid out on a grid and connected to the factory side by streetcars and four major bridges. Today, property prices on the east side, which is where the wind blows the bulk of the factory’s emissions, are lower, and flat blocks there are generally in worse condition.

But the bulk of the west bank construction had to wait until after the second world war. Of 56,000 men in Magnitogorsk, more than 30,000 were sent to the front, with women taking their places in the factory.

“They worked at the factory as if they were on the front. My grandmother said sometimes they slept at the factory and didn’t go home,” remembers local activist Vyacheslav Gutnikov, whose grandmother worked in the coke-chemical section of the steel mill – known as the “hell division” because of the harmful gases.

Magnitogorsk’s role in the war is commemorated by the town’s main monument overlooking the river, “Homefront to the Front”: a 50-foot bronze sculpture of a worker handing a giant sword to a Soviet soldier. Locals are still fond of bragging that every second tank and every third shell during the conflict was built with Magnitogorsk steel.

Ernst May’s Sotsgorod (‘socialist city’), the oldest residential area of Magnitogorsk.

It would be hard to overestimate the role that steelmaking plays in the life of the city, where members of nearly every family have worked at the plant. The beloved ice hockey team, which has won the national championship five times and for which local boys dream of playing, is called Metallurg.

On the eastern bank, the sheer size of MMK, which includes every step of the steelmaking process, is astounding. One workshop is more than a mile long, all under one roof. The plant produces 400 different types of steel and turned out 13 million tonnes of crude steel in 2014 and 12.2 tonnes of commercial steel products.

But metallurgy is a dirty business. In February, Leonardo DiCaprio reposted a National Geographic Instagram photograph of ice fishermen in front of dozens of smokestacks at MMK and a caption about pollution. DiCaprio’s repost caused a furore in Magnitogorsk. Chelyabinsk region governor Boris Dubrovsky, himself a former director of MMK, wrote a post on his own Instagram that the photo had been taken 22 years ago and that many of the smokestacks have since been removed, inviting DiCaprio to visit.

Yet any new arrival to the city is likely to notice an industrial tinge to the air, like the whiff of a charcoal brazier and an acrid dryness at the back of the throat. Russia’s state statistics service ranked Magnitogorsk the third most polluted city in Russia in 2015, finding that the level of benzopyrene, a carcinogen that has been linked to lung cancer, in the air was 23 times the allowed amount . In addition, millions of cubic metres of industrial waste water is pumped into the Ural River each year, according to environmentalists, polluting it with heavy particles, nitrites and other chemicals.

Magnitogorsk residents meet at sunset, with the MMK plant in the background.

Information on the health effects of this pollution is extremely difficult to find, but according to Anna Rozhkova, head of the environmental group EcoMagnitka, only one in 20 children born in the city is completely free of health problems and allergies. The head of Magnitogorsk’s oncological hospital said in a 2012 interview that “people around the world are susceptible [to cancer], but we unfortunately outpace all others.”

Alexander Morozov, chairman of the city council, tells the Guardian these claims of widespread health problems are greatly exaggerated, arguing that the environmental conditions had greatly improved. An MMK spokesperson says the company spent 2.5 billion roubles in 2013-15 on systems to reduce its environmental impact, and would invest more than 10.5 billion roubles (£110 million) in 2016-18.

When asked about the environment, locals tend to answer that at least it’s better than it used to be, remembering how the factory emissions used to turn the snow rust-coloured or black.

“Earlier, cucumbers and cabbage wouldn’t even grow,” recalls Nina Ivanovna, a cashier at a bakery on the east bank of the river. “They yellowed and wilted right away.”

But a fisherman selling minnows by the kilogram near MMK suggests the river is still polluted. “Yesterday they pumped out some filth, and there were lots of dead fish, a whole layer of them,” says the man, who would give his name only as Igor.

According to Pavel Verstov, editor of the local independent news site Verstov.info, the city administration should make MMK take more aggressive measures to solve these and other problems, but it is “under the factory’s thumb”.

Despite the city’s near-total dependence on the steel plant, diversifying the economy is not an issue that worries many. Asked what will happen to the city if the plant ever shuts down, city council chairman Morozov is blunt: “Detroit ... But we don’t think this will happen. We don’t think the factory could have such a crisis that it would stop.”

MMK has remained profitable , unlike many Soviet industrial plants. But the company suffered losses in Q4 of 2015, hit by Russia’s economic recession and record lows in global steel prices, and the situation is unlikely to improve this year. Many fear a return to the cuts of the financial crisis of 2008, when the company laid off 3,000 workers .

Yet locals remain fiercely patriotic and hopeful for their city. “There are things to criticise [Magnitogorsk] for, but I criticise it with love, so that it will get better,” says Oleg Frolov, editor of the MMK-sponsored local newspaper Magnitogorsk Metal. “It produces the GDP, the might of the country. It’s not for nothing that they call us the steel heart of the motherland.”

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
