Ever wonder how the world’s largest superyachts—and hundreds more than are not quite as large—cross back and forth between the Americas and Europe? The crossing doesn’t necessarily happen on their own hull bottoms. Rather, they often take place on a large vessel designed to carry dozens of yachts at a time. Loading and unloading can be a nail-biting process in which these multi-million-dollar yachts are lifted by crane from the water, a hundred feet into the air and then set on cradles on deck.

DYT Yacht Transport (previously Dockwise) has the only dedicated fleet of yacht transport semi-submersible vessels in the world. Now, it’s building the King Kong of submersibles, a 699-footer called Yacht Servant , that can carry up to 36 superyachts back and forth across the ocean. It will be the largest vessel of its type.

Instead of hoisting yachts by crane, Yacht Servant takes on ballast water until the main deck is flooded. The boats can then float on and off—a process DYT calls “flo-flo.” When all yachts are loaded, divers attach temporary supports to keep the boats elevated as the ballast water is released. Yacht Servant floats up and its decks become dry. At that point, the yachts are fastened into cradles for safe transportation. The process eliminates the need for cranes or dry docking.

Submersible transport vessels actually sink into the water so that yachts can drive on, rather than using a crane to lift them out of the water.  DYT

Yacht Servant will increase the size and type of yachts that the company can transport, compared to its current largest carrier, Yacht Express . “On average, Yacht Express carries around 25 yachts with tenders on a single transatlantic voyage,” Andriy Antonenko, DYT Load Master, told Robb Report . “With Yacht Servant we can up that number to 36 yachts.”

Carrying a third more superyachts is significant. From an operational standpoint, Yacht Servant also cuts in half the two days it currently takes to load the yachts, because the time it takes to ballast and de-ballast is reduced to one hour. “That means it’s only a day to load and unload,” says Antonenko.

Last month, Yacht Servant held special keel-laying ceremony in Yantai, China. “This is not just the laying of a keel, but the start of a new era in yacht transport,” said Laura Tempest, DYT general manager. “Yacht Express will set a new benchmark in the yacht transport industry.”

Scheduled to be completed next year, “Yacht Servant” will usher in a new era in yacht transport. 

Tempest says that sailing yachts that could not be accommodated before because of their deeper drafts can now be transported. The vessel was designed by DYT’s parent company, Spliethoff Group, in Amsterdam.

“We opted for to build a new vessel because there is a lack of availability worldwide of boats that can be converted to a submersible yacht carrier,” Tempest told Robb Report . “Everything was either the same size or smaller than what we already have. A new build gave us the opportunity to increase our capacity and be more fuel efficient. We’ve really maximized the whole ship in terms of what we can do.”

DYT, formerly known as DOCKWISE YACHT TRANSPORT was founded in 1987. The first sailing was under the name of Wijsmuller, a shipping company that specialized in heavy, off shore bulk transport and tugboats. A seized superyacht shows up in Everett — minus one Russian oligarch owner

EVERETT — It’s not clear whether Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov had plans to visit Puget Sound this spring — the French Riviera is more the style of the U.S.-sanctioned mining and energy multibillionaire.

But Monday morning, the Amadea, a 348-foot, $300 million-plus superyacht said to be owned by Kerimov, arrived in the Port of Everett to have some work done at a local shipyard. 

A sleek, white shark of a ship with a knifelike bow, raked profile and quarters for 16 guests and 36 crew, Amadea swanned past Everett’s industrial waterfront with a tug escort and all the made-for-TV glamour of an international celebrity fugitive. Kerimov, of course, was not on board.

In 2022, Amadea (“God’s love” in Latin) was seized in Fiji at the request of U.S. authorities who claim Kerimov has enabled Russian aggression in Ukraine and Syria. Money laundering and conspiracy were also alleged.

At the time, the seizure was hailed as a warning to “every corrupt Russian oligarch that they cannot hide — not even in the remotest part of the world,” as a deputy U.S. attorney general put it in a press statement . 

But as any boat owner in this boat-focused community will tell you , seizing a superyacht is one thing. Maintaining its value as an asset is another — especially when the asset is the size of a ferry and equipped with a theater, a gym, beauty salon, teak decks, 30-foot-long pool, helipad and twin 5,766-horsepower diesels. 

“They’re saying it’s costing us $7 million a year to keep it up,” said Chris Petersen, a retired fisherman who runs a metal coatings shop on West Marine View Drive, a few blocks from the port and who, like many here, has been following the superyacht saga since Monday.

Indeed, fuel, maintenance, insurance and salary for the crew of Amadea during its impoundment in San Diego ran around $740,000 a month, according to federal court filings by the Marshals Service. 

In February, the Justice Department told a federal court it intended to halt this “excessive … drain on the public” purse by auctioning off Amadea, which the government claims Kerimov acquired in 2021.

But selling off this excessive drain has been complicated. 

There is litigation challenging Amadea’s seizure because the vessel allegedly wasn’t owned by Kerimov, but by another Russian oligarch, who is not sanctioned, according to court papers. 

Another complication, more relevant to Everett: Amadea’s insurance policy, according to court filings, requires service that can only be done by hauling the vessel out of the water — a job that appears to be slated for the dry dock facilities at Everett Ship Repair, on the port’s East Waterway. 

Few details of the project have been shared. Port officials have referred all questions to Everett Ship Repair, whose vice president of service sales, Lane Richards, politely declined to comment.

But a Justice Department spokesperson confirmed Thursday that Amadea was indeed “in Washington for standard dry dock maintenance.”

And on Wednesday, the vessel in question could be seen berthed, like a slightly lost Imperial Starship, on the south side of Pier 3, adjacent to Everett Ship Repair’s dry dock and the Washington State Ferry Salish. 

All the no-commenting has only added to the atmosphere of maritime intrigue and speculation in a town ordinarily unperturbed by big, secrecy-shrouded ships, including those at the nearby Everett Naval Station. 

Many here wonder why the U.S. government spent the money to bring Amadea all the way to Everett, when there are dry dock facilities in San Diego, San Francisco and Portland; even Seattle is 5 nautical miles closer to San Diego. 

Amadea’s fuel burn “is probably in the 8-to-10 gallons per mile range,” said Dennis Butterfield, a retired car dealership manager and former boat owner, as he kept an eye on the Russian superyacht Wednesday from a viewpoint on Warren Avenue. “That’s the United States government at work, if you ask me.”

Butterfield’s estimate was close: based on vessel specifications featured on the yachting website, YachCharterFleet , the 4,400-ton Amadea burns roughly 11 gallons per mile at a cruising speed of 15 mph.

The Justice Department declined to justify Amadea’s four-day journey from San Diego to Everett.

Such secrecy would likely suit Kerimov, who Forbes once described as “one of the most private Russian billionaires,” and who is also said to have close ties to the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 58-year-old serves in the Russian Federation Senate, is reportedly worth nearly $11 billion and has owned villas on the French Riviera and elsewhere.

He may also have owned a rare Fabergé egg, according to accounts of the search of the Amadea after its seizure .

Beginning in 2017, Kerimov was listed by U.S. officials as one of a number of Russian oligarchs “who profit from the Russian government through corruption and its malign activity around the globe .”

In March 2022, after the FBI reportedly linked Kerimov to the Amadea , the vessel was seized under a program known as Task Force KleptoCapture and eventually sailed to San Diego under an American flag.

But Amadea’s more recent trip likely had less to do with the vessel’s checkered lineage than with a shortage of West Coast dry dock capacity, especially for large vessels. 

Unlike the East Coast and the Gulf Coast, ship repair infrastructure on the West Coast is “is woefully undersized,” said Craig Hooper, a former naval ship building industry executive who writes and advises on security and defense issues.

In recent decades, several private shipyards with dry dock facilities have closed and building new capacity faces high costs and regulatory hurdles, Hooper said. As a result, “long transits to an open facility are relatively commonplace these days,” he added. 

In the case of the Amadea, Hooper hypothesized, “the responsible party may have put the job out for bid and an Everett yard was the available, lowest-cost option.”

According to court filings, Amadea’s dry dock work is expected to cost $5.6 million and take two months. 

By that time, federal officials may have sorted Amadea’s other complications. 

Last fall, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, the former head of state-owned oil company Rosneft, claimed Amadea isn’t owned by Kerimov, but by Khudainatov. Attorneys argue that since Khudainatov wasn’t under sanctions, the yacht was “not forfeitable, as it neither constitutes nor is derived from any unlawful activity.”

But federal prosecutors contend “that Khudainatov is just a straw owner put forward to disguise Kerimov’s ownership of the vessel,” according to an April 19 filing in a federal court in New York, where the case is ongoing.

In the meantime, Everett will take some pleasure in the Amadea’s august presence. 

Port of Everett officials, though tight-lipped about the vessel’s particulars, were clearly pleased by the message it sends of the port’s growing status as a maritime hub.

“Anything that puts Everett on the international map is a good thing!” said Kate Anderson, port spokesperson, in an email response to an inquiry about the Amadea.

Locals, too, appeared to be enjoying the celebrity by association.

“That magnitude of wealth — it’s just another world,” said Petersen, the retired fisherman.

Others wondered who would be foolish enough to buy a vessel whose ownership was being contested by Russian oligarchs.

But mostly, folks here appeared to sympathize with Uncle Sam’s desire to be rid of the costly, controversial craft. 

That was the sentiment of John Mostrom, who had taken a break from mowing his lawn Wednesday to peer down at the Amadea from the Warren Avenue overlook. 

“They say the two happiest days of a boat owner’s life,” Mostrom noted, “are when they buy the boat and when they sell it.”

A 192-foot superyacht has been caught in a legal tug-of-war between the UK government and a Russian business tycoon as the war continues in Ukraine.

Sergei Naumenko, a Russian property developer who isn't on any sanctions list, per Bloomberg , is listed as the beneficial owner of the "Phi." The vessel — which is worth £38 million, or $48 million — was seized by UK authorities last year .

Now, the businessman wants his ship — which has been moored in London's Canary Wharf since the end of 2021— back. He is suing the UK's transport department to free the vessel and is seeking undisclosed damages, according to a high court claim document filed on May 10 .

The Phi — which features an "infinite wine cellar" and a "patented fresh-water swimming pool," according to the Guardian — was detained by Grant Shapps, then the transport minister, amid a big media frenzy. 

Shapps even posted a TikTok video in March 2022 , where he said: "We've just detained the ship which was due to sail at midday. It's a yacht which belongs to a Russian oligarch — friends of Putin — and was here for a refit," adding: "We're not going to allow this yacht to sail we've detained indefinitely."

Insider visited the quay where the yacht was docked hours after the UK announced its seizure and saw bright lights burning on the ship akin to fake stars and no visible security,  Grace Dean reported.

Naumenko has denied the link to Russian President Putin, Bloomberg reported on Thursday . The ship's captain previously told Bloomberg that Naumenko has "never met Putin."

Despite the court filing, the ownership of the Phi is also in question. A March 30 report by the Financial Times lists the owner as Vitaly Vasilievich Kochetkov, the founder of a small mobile phone network called Motiv Telecom in the Urals region of Russia.

When seizing the vessel, the UK government did not name Phi's owner, only saying that it belonged to a "Russian businessman" and adding that the yacht's ownership was "deliberately well-hidden," the FT reported.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Western governments scrambled to freeze some of the most high-profile Russian assets — and more than a dozen yachts with links to wealthy Russians have since been detained, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Justice Chamberlain, the presiding judge, said a "substantive hearing" to decide the yacht's fate is scheduled for July. 

The UK Department for Transport declined to comment on ongoing legal proceedings. A legal representative for Naumenko did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

The case number is CO/1160/2023 and lists the claimants as Dalston Projects, Sergei Naumenko, and Prism Maritime.

To Catch a Thief (1955)

There’s perhaps no film that better embodies the glamour, heat, and alluring, illicit dangers of the South of France than Alfred Hitchcock’s sun-drenched tale of a charismatic jewel thief (Cary Grant) who becomes the prime suspect for a string of robberies on the Riviera—except he’s retired, and the real culprit is a fleet-footed copycat. Cue an elaborate plan to catch the latter red-handed, which involves befriending a wealthy widow (Jessie Royce Landis) and her razor-sharp daughter (a luminous Grace Kelly). Dressed in chiffon ball gowns and monochrome linen separates, she swans around ritzy restaurants, sunbathes, swims, attends opulent galas, and speeds down cliffside roads in her convertible. Kelly herself certainly understood the appeal of life on the Côte d’Azur—by this point, she’d already met Prince Rainier III, and would soon become the Princess of Monaco (and an enduring symbol of the region).

And God Created Woman (1956)

The film that established Brigitte Bardot as the bombshell of her era, Roger Vadim’s scandalous romp casts the cat-eyed, tousled-haired fashion icon as a wild young woman with a voracious sexual appetite who breaks hearts and wreaks havoc across Saint-Tropez. Watch it for that dance sequence, as well as for the bicycle rides through picturesque ports, the frolicking on pristine beaches, and wandering through idyllic cobblestone streets—all scenes that helped to put this once sleepy fishing village on the map for tourists the world over.

Bonjour Tristesse (1958)

With her gamine crop and wonderfully laid-back holiday wardrobe—think boatneck tops, linen shorts, and starched button-downs with rolled up sleeves, tied at the waist over square-necked bathing suits—Jean Seberg’s mischievous teenager, Cécile, lives the Riviera dream in Otto Preminger’s ravishing adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s seminal novel of the same name. But then, her long days of wild swimming, lounging in her palatial villa, and engaging in a summer romance are interrupted by the arrival of a worldly new love interest (a swan-like Deborah Kerr) for her rakish father (David Niven), one who threatens to turn our young heroine’s world upside down. While this landscape of verdant cliffsides and shimmering waters is filmed in glorious Technicolor, Cécile’s melancholic existence in Paris a year later plays out in subdued black and white—fitting, considering that once you leave the Côte d’Azur, everything else seems to pale in comparison.

Pierrot le Fou (1965)

In Jean-Luc Godard’s madcap road movie, a verified French New Wave classic, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina are reckless lovers on the run from Paris to the Mediterranean, escaping the staid cocktail parties and mindless consumerism of the capital for the wild, lawless promise of the coast. The views are sweeping, the satire biting, and Karina’s collection of cherry-red frocks and baby blue knits simply to die for.

Two for the Road (1967)

Several sojourns to the South of France over the course of a decade, as recalled by a dysfunctional married couple (Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney), are spliced together in Stanley Donen’s wistful, bittersweet rom-com. As their relationship blossoms, frays, disintegrates, and is eventually repaired, the chemistry is palpable and the laughs plentiful—to say nothing of the spectacular costumes. (Come for Hepburn’s showstopping Paco Rabanne paillette minidress , stay for her PVC suit, psychedelic prints, and Space Age sunglasses.)

La Piscine (1969)

From Jane Birkin’s louche shirting, gingham minis, crochet separates, and basket bags to Romy Schneider’s scintillating swimwear and printed cocktail dresses, Jacques Deray’s steamy thriller is a sartorial masterclass: the tale of a stylish couple (Schneider and Alain Delon) whose trip to a friend’s villa near Saint-Tropez is disrupted when an old acquaintance (Maurice Ronet) shows up with his always-impeccably-dressed young daughter (Birkin) in tow. Cue jealousy, obsession, raucous parties, and an endless supply of holiday style inspiration.

Priceless (2006)

The opportunity to see Audrey Tautou shed Amélie’s severe bob, kooky ensembles, and childlike wonder for low-cut dresses and stilettos to take the part of a chain-smoking, cocktail-swilling, world-weary gold digger? Truly priceless, in Pierre Salvadori’s charming romance, which sees her mistake a humble bartender (Gad Elmaleh) for a millionaire at a glitzy Biarritz hotel. They spend the night together, but once his true identity is revealed, she flees to the Riviera and he chases after her, determined to make it right. A flood of glittering parties, lavish dinners, and poolside flirtations follow, before enmity finally gives way to friendship and, later, love.
