Fact check: Tom Hanks is now a Greek citizen, but pedophilia has nothing to do with it

The claim: tom hanks became a greek citizen because pedophilia there is considered a disability..

A QAnon conspiracy theory making the rounds on social media falsely claims Tom Hanks became a citizen of Greece because it classifies pedophilia as a disability.

A July 28 Facebook post that was shared more than 2,300 times said, “while everyone was distracted by coronavirus Tom Hanks became a citizen of Greece … a place that recognizes pedophilia as a disability,” with a side eye emoji. That Facebook user, Gigi Kundalini, told USA TODAY that she found the Greek citizenship news through a BBC article, but did not comment on the other claim about pedophilia.

The post is part of a larger trend of posts that question Hanks' new Greek citizenship, alluding to Hanks being involved in child sex trafficking.

Some of the posts include hashtags for QAnon, a far-right conspiracy theory that alleges the world is controlled by a small group of elites who are pedophiles and devil worshippers. Part of QAnon’s theory is a “deep state” entity run by politicians, celebrities and business leaders who operate a child sex trafficking ring and are working against Trump.

QAnon supporters have also alleged that other celebrities are tied to child sex trafficking, such as Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and the Clintons. USA TODAY has rated those accusations as false as well.

When Hanks first was in quarantine back in March after contracting the novel coronavirus, some posts alleged he was arrested for pedophilia. Those were also reported as false .

Did Tom Hanks become a Greek citizen?

Yes, he did, along with wife Rita Wilson, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotaki announced. On July 26, Mitsotaki posted a photo on Instagram of himself with Hanks and Wilson who were holding up Greek passports saying they “are now proud Greek citizens!” followed by a Greek flag emoji and a thumbs up emoji.

Hanks, Wilson and their children were awarded honorary Greek citizenship after their work in bringing attention to a July 2018 wildfire near Athens that killed more than 100 people, according to the BBC.

Hanks and Wilson have been visiting Greece for years and own a home on the island of Antiparos, BBC reports. Wilson also has Greek heritage, and Hanks converted to the Greek Orthodox Church. They have both expressed their love and admiration for the nation.

In January at the Golden Globes, Hanks mentioned his honorary citizenship .

“Greece is a haven,” he said. “My family goes to Greece. I’ve been around the world. I’ve been to the most beautiful places in the world. None of them tops Greece.”

Is pedophilia listed as as a disability in Greece?

Pedophilia is not considered a disability under Greek law.

In 2012, there was proposal in Greece to include behavioral disorders “such as compulsive gamblers, pyromaniacs, pedophiles and fetishists on the list of disabilities,” according to a Snopes.com fact-check . The idea was the additions would enable better medical assessments, but the classifications was not meant to affect disability benefits, according to BBC as well as Business Insider .

However, the idea drew quick outrage, including from the Greece National Confederation of Disabled People, which said in a press release that conditions like pedophilia, pyromania, voyeurism, ostentation and sadomachism were removed from the new Disability Identification Table after a huge upheaval occurred throughout Greek society.

Faced with the uproar, the proposal was short-lived and pedophilia was scratched from the list a few months later, according to Snopes.

Greece’s current Disability Assessment Application , read via Google Translate, does not include pedophilia or other conditions like pyromania and sadomachism. The application instead mentions conditions like deafness, blindness and disorders like hemolytic anemia.

Is there any evidence that Tom Hanks is a pedophile? 

There is no evidence that Tom Hanks has engaged in pedophilia.

A search for “Tom Hanks” on California’s sex offender registry and the U.S. Department of justice’s national sex offender registry resulted in no records, according to a previous fact-check from USA TODAY. 

Some of those claims regurgitated through QAnon conspiracy theorists stem from a belief that Hanks, along with many other celebrities and political leaders such as the Clintons, are involved with Jeffrey Epstein in an alleged child sex trafficking ring. Some QAnon theories allege Hanks was a frequent visitor to Epstein's island and flew on Epstein’s jet. A look at the flight logs of Epstein’s jet by Reuters contain no evidence of Hanks ever being on the plane.

It is true that Tom Hanks, along with his wife Rita Wilson, did become a citizen of Greece. But Greece does not classify pedophilia as a disability, and there is no evidence that Tom Hanks is a pedophile. The allegations are a series of conspiracy theories purported by QAnon supporters. We rate this claim as PARTLY FALSE, based on our research.

On their itinerary was dinner at Cantina, a glamorous waterfront restaurant on the island of Sifnos. The Obamas had two extra people on their reservation: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.

A witness told People the party arrived on Paralia Seralia beach by dinghy - having come from a luxury yacht docked nearby..

An anonymous restaurant patron told the Daily Mail, “Seeing Obama in the flesh and so close was pretty surreal.” “Their presence was pretty overwhelming,” they added, saying they had “excessive security - who we even had to ask if we could use the restroom.” The group was treated like VIPs with a private table. Barack, who said he always wanted to be in the NBA , wore a black button-down, but Tom rocked a more casual look in a hoodie.

Barack and Michelle were joined by their daughter Malia and Sasha, showing just how strong the family is since they are still traveling together.

The family has a lot to celebrate this summer after the youngest, Sasha, graduated from USC.

Hanks and Wilson became citizens of Greece in 2020 and reportedly purchased a second home in the Skala area of Patmos Island. The former president was in Athens, Greece, in late June for a gathering of the Obama Foundation’s global young leaders.

The outlet notes that the Obamas may have spent time with Tom and Rita before he headed to Athens to speak at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Nostos Conference on June 22.

Tom and Wilson share Chet Hanks ,32, and Truman Theodore Hanks ,27. The Forest Gump actor shares his oldest children, Colin Hanks ,45, and Elizabeth Ann Hanks ,41, with his ex-wife Samantha Lewes.

It’s not clear when their friendship started, but Barack awarded Tom, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. The following year in 2017 they were then seen vacationing together alongside Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen on music mogul David Geffen’s superyacht off the coast of Tahiti.

Barack Obama has been photographed on a luxury vacation with his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia - as the family were joined by an unexpected Hollywood guest.

The former US President, 61, was seen soaking up the sun in Greece with his family, alongside Forest Gump actor Tom Hanks, 66, and his wife Rita Wilson, 66.

They enjoyed an intimate group dinner together as Obama's daughter Malia, 24, appeared to share a bottle of white wine with Cast Away star Tom.

Onlookers say the families arrived on Paralia Seralia beach via a dinghy boat after leaving a multi-million-dollar super yacht docked nearby.

Barak and Tom's broods were reportedly protected by "excessive security" who controlled their picturesque sit-down meal in the lavish location.

"I'm not one to get very starstruck - but seeing Obama in the flesh and so close was pretty surreal," one eye-witness told DailyMail.com.

"Their presence was pretty overwhelming and that definitely wasn't lessened by the excessive security - who we even had to ask if we could use the restroom."

Tom and Rita officially became Greek citizens back in 2020.

They are thought to own a villa on the island of Antiparos, not far from the group's dinner in Sifnos.

Barack and Tom have actually been pals for years and it isn't the first time the pair have enjoyed a luxury vacation together.

They both joined Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen onboard a yacht off the coast of Tahiti all the way back in April 2017.

Barack even attended Tom and Rita's 30th anniversary party in Hollywood a year later and was even seen at Hanks' home for a party in May 2021.

The pair are thought to have met for the first time when Obama awarded Hanks the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

At the time, the ex-POTUS said Tom's career had "touched him in a very powerful, personal way".

In exclusive new photos, the former US President, 61, and Hollywood star, 66, were seen having an al fresco dinner together at Cantina, a glamorous waterfront restaurant on the island of Sifnos.

For the time being, Tom Hanks has to recover, but soon enough, he'll be back to exploring Greece, Italy, and other exotic locations.

By now everyone knows that Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have been diagnosed with the Coronavirus. According to the Daily Mail , the couple is in isolation in Australia. But don't worry, they'll be fine. And they want you to know that. Understandably, this is all frightening. Especially since they're so far from home. However, the Academy Award-winning actor is more than used to being across the planet.

Both Tom and Rita are jet-setters. Their jobs require them to fly just about everywhere. But the Forrest Gump star also loves a lavish holiday or two. For the time being, he and Rita will have to recover. But soon enough, they'll be back to exploring the planet once more.

The Oscar winner and wife Rita Wilson were spotted dining with the 44th U.S. president, former first lady Michelle Obama , and the Obamas’ daughters Malia and Sasha in Sifnos, Greece, earlier this month.

In photos obtained by the Daily Mail, Tom and Rita and the Obamas appeared to enjoy an al fresco meal at local hotspot Cantina. The families are said to have been shuttled to the restaurant from a yacht that docked nearby.

An eyewitness told the UK outlet that they were uncharacteristically “starstruck” over seeing Obama, adding that his presence was “surreal” and “pretty overwhelming” and that they had to ask the group’s security to use the restroom.

The Obamas were in town for the their foundation’s global leadership event. According to the organization’s website, the gathering took place June 27 in Athens. As for Hanks and Wilson, the couple reportedly became Greek citizens in 2020 and enjoy frequent getaways to the island nation.

Hanks and the former commander-in-chief have been friendly for years and the actor was previously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, near the end of Obama’s second term in office.

The following year, the pair, along with Michelle, joined Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen for a glam getaway on David Geffen’s luxury sea vessel. Hanks told Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show” afterward that the trip was “off-the-scale fantastic.”

Former US President Barack Obama and actor Tom Hanks have recently been spotted enjoying a lavish vacation in Greece alongside their families when his wife was tweeting about "oppression," RadarOnline.com has learned.

The group was seen dining at a glamorous waterfront restaurant on the island of Sifnos earlier this month. Obama's wife, Michelle , and their daughters, Sasha and Malia , were also present for the meal.

Witnesses told the Daily Mail that the party arrived at the restaurant by dinghy, having come from a luxury yacht that was docked nearby. An anonymous onlooker described the group's presence as overwhelming, mentioning the excessive security measures that surrounded them.

The timing of the Obamas' vacation has raised eyebrows, as it coincided with their public comments on the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action.

Michelle took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the decision, while Barack echoed his wife's sentiments about "fairness" regarding oppressed groups in America. Their tweets sparked controversy, as it was revealed that they were posted while the Obamas were enjoying their luxurious yacht trip in Greece.

Hanks purchased a plot of land in Antiparos in 2004 and built a dream home where they could bask in the island life. While many stars opt for more glamorous tourist destinations like Mykonos or Santorini, Tom and his wife Rita Wilson like to kick back in their 450 square meter property on the quiet island tucked away between Glypha and Chora.

Tom Hanks may be a Hollywood legend, but before he became famous, he came from humble beginnings in San Francisco. He was born in Concord and was raised in the Bay Area, having lived there for nearly two decades.

From 1973 to 1976, Hanks lived on a houseboat along with his father and stepmother. Located in the Barnhill Marina in Alameda (just East of San Francisco), the family resided in a 1,152 square foot houseboat that featured 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. The two-story floating home boasted a living room and kitchen on the top level.

The houseboat was constructed in 1973 meaning that Hanks and his family lived there when it was brand new. Inside Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s Real Estate Portfolio—Including His Legendary Airstream

Tom Hanks has led a long and storied career spanning nearly four decades, and in that time he and his wife, musician Rita Wilson, have built their real estate empire. The beloved actor, born and raised in Northern California, has long made Southern California his home base. Over the years, the couple has owned homes in Malibu and the Pacific Palisades, as well as in Sun Valley, Idaho, and in Greece. (Fun fact: Hanks and Wilson were so heavily involved in efforts to help the country recover from massive wildfires in 2018 that they were  awarded honorary Greek citizenship the following year.) The Hollywood pair, though celebrated regulars on the red carpet, are notoriously quiet about their personal lives, so some details and photos of their properties are scant. Nevertheless, we’ve rounded up what we do know about the duo’s many beautiful homes below.

Hanks and Wilson met in 1981 on the set of the actor’s sitcom  Bosom Buddies and hit it off immediately—as friends. They began dating several years later after reuniting on the set of  Volunteers, in which they played love interests. “Rita and I just looked at each other and—kaboing—that was that,” Hanks  once told  GQ . The couple got married in April 1988, and that same year, they bought their first home together, a $1.9 million house in the Pacific Palisades. The  Spanish-style dwelling featured four bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms spread out across 6,289 square feet, plus a private interior courtyard. They sold it for  $5.22 million  in 2013.

The couple next purchased  a $2.95 million property in Malibu, this time an oceanfront pad in the coveted guard-gated Colony enclave, where other celebrity residents include Woody Harrelson, Tori Spelling, Bill Murray, and Bette Midler. The two-story house was originally built in 1928 but was substantially updated by the time Hanks and Wilson bought it from director John Frankenheimer. It boasts three bedrooms spread across 1,800 square feet, with unobstructed ocean views from the primary suite. A housekeeper’s room and a two-bedroom guest apartment with its own kitchen sits separate from the main structure. The couple still own this property.

In 1993, Hanks bought and customized a Model 34 Limited Excella trailer to better suit the demands of his busy filming schedule. “I got it in the days when movies moved slower,” he told  Bonhams Magazine decades later. “I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly decor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request.” At 33 feet long, it held a kitchen and a bathroom, as well as a bed, a couch, and a wooden table and chair set. There was even a faux fireplace for extra coziness. By the time Hanks put it up for auction in 2021 , it had traveled to 18 locations across the country, including South Carolina for  Forrest Gump and Seattle for  Sleepless in Seattle, and it featured stickers on the window denoting each place. The Airstream  ultimately sold for $235,200 at auction that August; it’s unknown how much the actor originally paid for it.

In the early 2000s, the pair custom-built a residence in the small town of Ketchum, Idaho, likely meant to be a ski vacation home. They reportedly paid around $12 million for the villa at the time, but the property made headlines in subsequent years because of an ongoing dispute between them and the construction company that built it. In 2007, the couple  reportedly sued the company for $3 million for shoddy construction that had impacted their ability to live in and enjoy the home. ( Oregon Live reported that among the complaints was the fact that sliding snow from the roof damaged the kitchen windows and the roof itself just one year after construction.) Hanks and Wilson  unfortunately lost the legal battle , and even had to pay the full cost of arbitration: $167,623. They still own this home.

The couple expanded their footprint in the Pacific Palisades with the purchase of  two neighboring properties , each situated on one-acre lots overlooking the sea. They first snapped up a four-bedroom Spanish Revival–style villa, originally built in 1933, which measured 4,000 square feet and featured beamed ceilings, a tiled staircase with iron rails, and a wood-paneled dining room. They next picked up a seven-bedroom English cottage-style mansion, this one measuring 7,260 square feet, with a screening room, eat-in kitchen, and a billiard room. The pair paid a total of $13.1 million for the two homes. The two homes were listed together for $18 million in 2016, and they were both picked up by the same buyer for a  combined price of $17.5 million the following year.

Years before they became honorary Greek citizens, Hanks and Wilson were big fans of family getaways to Greece. Specifically, the couple enjoyed the  small island of Antiparos , where they would eventually purchase a plot of land to build a dream vacation home. Not much is known about the property—part of the draw of the location is the privacy that they are afforded there—but  what is known is that the house itself spans a modest 1,476 square feet and is situated on about six acres of land.

Perhaps Hanks and Wilson’s best-known home is their  $26 million Pacific Palisades residence , a spacious mansion measuring 14,513 square feet, with four bedrooms and five bathrooms scattered throughout the property’s three stories. The home is perched atop a cliffside overlooking the ocean, and was originally  built in 1996 but significantly updated in 2006. Amenities include things like a wine cellar, a cliffside swimming pool and deck area, and a tree-lined motor court. The couple still owns this Gwathmey Siegel–designed home and consider it their main residence.

Hanks and Wilson adored their frequent vacations to Greece so much that they  reportedly purchased a second home in the Skala area of Patmos Island. The seaside villa is reportedly built from stone in the Dodecanese architectural style, with an expansive terrace looking out over the sea.

It is known that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson love Greece and in the past few years they visit every summer. After all, Wilson is of Greek descent, so it was natural that when the couple first landed on Antiparos island in the summer of 1999 it was love at first sight.

After three years, and thanks to an invitation by their friend, Marianna Latsi, they elected Greece and Antiparos again for a few days’ vacation. In 2004, however, they decided to make it their second home and so they bought a plot between Glyfa and Chora, where they built a summer home based on the island’s architectural style.

Ever since, the couple visit Greece every summer for a few days of sea. sun and relaxation.

According to the magazine report, Hanks and Wilson fell in love with another wonderful Greek island. In the past four years they visited Patmos in the Dodecanese and this year they decided to buy a villa on the island, and specifically in the Skala area.

It is a stone building, based, again, on the architectural style Dodecanese,with a large terrace overlooking the sea. The magazine notes that the couple were enchanted by the view.

According to the article, one of the great advantages of the seaside villa — that was also a  decisive factor in the purchase — is a nearby heliport, as there is no airport on the island and the only means of air transport is by helicopter.
