Zhik 270 Sailing Boots

Let customers speak for us

This cover fits easily over the boat with masts and boom placed on a set of spar holders. There is a neat velco opening to bring out a bowline to secure to the trolley.

A new innovation surprise is having clips on both sides of the cover. You can unclip from whichever side you are on.

Sailing Chandlery have listened to feedback from a previous purchase of the older design. Remains to be seen how it weathers, how breathable and water-proof it all is, but looking v smart from new.

Probably the most comfortable visor I’ve worn. I put it to the test in Dubai last week, it never budged, and wasn’t too tight or hot. The little clip gives added reassurance that you won’t loose it. I’m very pleased with the purchase.

There’s a reason I keep on buying these. My last pair lasted 4 years of use, sailing almost every weekend. They last and when you consider the cost and use, it probably works out to be the equivalent of buying a really cheap pair once every 6-12 months. Why buy twice? Very comfortable and supportive.

What more can be said, easy to fit and do the job

Very happy with the Kingfisher braid on braid, very easy to splice.

Great top, fits perfectly. I’m purchased a size 10 and is true to size.

I am very happy with my products . The advice on the kicking strap replacement rope was very helpful. Love thee we colour and material of the Velcro strap. Thank you 🙏

Needed floating cleats to secure a freestanding mast middle of RIB. Ideal adjustable guy system created using these.

As expected at a good price with fast delivery

This is a top quality rope, a bit stiffer on hands than polyester braind on braid but much lighter for the same breaking load, I bought it for sheets on a light air sail. It is perfect for the job.

Massive thanks to Andrew and team. The boat was immaculate, stiff hull and package of new kit. Asked whether we could collect the boat between Christmas and New Year en-route to an event and the Sailing Chandlery team couldn’t have done more to help. Thank you.

Thanks they look great but I haven’t put them on yet!

Part delivered on time

We were delighted to receive 12 vouchers from Sailing Chandlery for their sponsorship of our Club Open events during 2024. The first of these prizes were awarded at our ITCA (Topper) open on 10th Feb, and our prize winners were very happy with the flexibility such prizes offer. The whole process from offer to delivery has been easy, and we are happy to promote Sailing Chandlery for the support they’ve given us. Allison Blakeway. Vice Commodore, Trimpley Sailing Club.

The right size and arrived very quickly. Great quality

How to choose sailing clothing: what to wear

  • How to choose sailing clothing: what to wear

Yachting is not just a week of sunbathing on a boat in the Mediterranean. Especially in spring and autumn, the temperatures tend to fluctuate a lot during the day and winds coupled with the occasional shower of sea water doesn't add to the comfort. In such conditions, the right sailing apparel can really help you stay warm and dry. What exactly should you get? What to look for? And what's worth spending money on for more demanding crossings?

Why choose specialist clothing for sailing?

It may occur to you that it isn’t really necessary to buy clothing specifically for sailing when you already have a perfectly fine windbreaker at home. And for summer, you already have a stylish striped t-shirt and shorts. These are nice ideas… but not the best choices. So why? Because yachting apparel must be able to withstand completely different conditions that it has been specially developed for.

yacht pay clothing

What makes sailing apparel special?

  • The fabric must be able to handle salt .
  • The fabric must be  suitable for dam p and wet conditions (quick-drying, waterproof or water-repellent) or for  direct sunlight  (UV filter).
  • The fabric must be  extra strong to be able to withstand friction, movement and contact with the boat.
  • The cut must  respect the specifics of movement  on board as well as the weather (high collar, reinforced parts, adjustable elements).

What happens to normal clothing while sailing? The salt quickly clogs the fabric membrane and it ceases to perform its function. The clothing also  wears out or get damaged much faster . Or even worse, they leave you wet and freezing cold.

Of course, some pieces of clothing are  universal  and can be used in the mountains, and on trips and on board a boat. These are items such as functional underwear that you can use as a bottom layer or warm socks on spring or autumn cruises. Remember that  layering is the right way to go . It's better to have several thin layers than one thick one. There is no compromise here.

To buy or not to buy?

Not sure what clothing to buy and whether you’ll make use of it? Try  renting clothes the first time you go out to sea. You’ll be able to see how they feel, find out what suits you and what you personally want to invest in. Plus, you’ll see for yourself exactly how much of a difference there is between a hiking jacket and a sailing jacket.

YACHTING.COM TIP: If you are new to yachting or are only going on one boating holiday, there is no need to worry about specialist sailing clothes. Take a look at our article —  First time on a yacht: what should you pack?  And for a complete list of what to pack for sea (including documents, money, food and everything else), check out our article —   Sailing essentials: don't forget to pack these things .

Why invest in specialist brands and not in retail chains?

Some sports chains offer their very own and  inexpensive yachting lines . For your first tentative steps in yachting, it will probably be enough. But if you’re even the slightest bit serious about yachting, you should definitely try clothing manufacturers who specialize in yachting gear.

Why? Retail chains do not invest as much in development which means the clothing is often outdated. Reputable companies innovate every year and push new materials down to their lower clothing lines, so even the cheapest line is well thought out. And most importantly, they also  invest in the cut of the clothing , i.e. specialist yachting apparel fits better, is more detailed, is better suited to a how a sailor moves about and to the unpredictable weather.

yacht pay clothing

Whether or not a traditional yellow raincoat is enough at sea is also a heated topic among sailors. One of its main advocates is the well-known expedition yachtsman Jirka Denk.

What clothes to buy for yachting?

When you ask an experienced sailor what clothes to choose, they’ll probably summarize the main principles as follows:  "Protection against water and wind".  Although relatively sound advice, there are many factors involved in this. Let's take a closer look at what exactly lies beneath it and what to look for when making a choice!

We’ll take a look at what to take to Croatia in summer, as well as focussing on clothing for moderate and difficult conditions.

1. What to wear on a yacht in summer?

T-shirt or base layer.

  • The best choice is a lycra t-shirt  or a t-shirt made of a functional material. It should fit   comfortably, perfectly draw away moisture and be made of a quick-drying material. And in summer you’ll appreciate a bit of UV protection. We recommend choosing a longer sleeve that protects against the sun and wind.
  • For lovers of natural materials, a great choice is clothing made of merino wool . Don't worry, you can choose the lightest weight for the summer. It is naturally functional and antibacterial, helps with thermoregulation and warms even when wet. It draws away moisture and, although woollen, it is really soft and light. Choose a lightweight fabric for the first layer or for summer, and choose a thicker, warmer one as a top layer.
  • Even with trousers and shorts, it pays to use a functional material. Again, you will really appreciate it, if it dries quickly and removes moisture. Another advantage is a sporty comfortable fit, which will not limit you in any way when moving around on the boat. In better clothing lines, you’ll also find trousers that are specially reinforced in areas that come under the most stress.

Vest or lighter jacket

  • In summer, a light water-repellent windbreak er will suffice. A great choice is also a windproof  vest  which is very comfortable even when working on a boat — your hands remain free and able to move unhindered.

yacht pay clothing

2. What to wear in medium conditions (INSHORE, spring or autumn recreational yachting)?

Here it is likely that you’ll face  stronger winds and you’ll get  a thorough showering from the sea. That's why it's very important that your clothes hold up in this weather. In spring and autumn there is also a big difference in temperature between the daytime and the evening. And even when the sun is shining, it can feel a lot colder due to the wind and moisture.

Sailing jacket?

You can't make do with a light windbreaker anymore. So what to look for when choosing a jacket in medium conditions in spring or autumn?

  • Higher collar that protects the face from wind and water
  • At least a double-layered coated /laminated fabric
  • Adjustable cuffs with seal
  • Water repellent finish
  • Fully taped waterproof seams
  • Breathability

An adjustable bottom hem and a solid zipper, ideally with a double cover and sufficiently large front pockets would also be an advantage. An inner pocket is perfect to keep the most important things dry and safe and plenty of  reflective elements  would also be of benefit.

Layering: why and how to layer clothes for yachting.

Under the jacket, you can layer a warm base layer, as well as a  vest or fleece sweatshirt . In medium conditions, you will use everything you already have for summer sailing.

  • Bottom layer

The most important thing for the base layer is absorbency , so choose one that absorbs sweat and moisture well. Because you will be layering more clothes on top of each other,  choose underwear with flat seams . For colder weather, you will appreciate long sleeves and a two-layer construction with an insulated inner thermal layer .

  • Middle layer

The main task of the middle layer is perfect insulation and thermal comfort. Therefore an ideal sweatshirt for harsher conditions would also be windproof (densely knitted fleece). But you can also choose more versatile clothing. Most apparel is relatively  universal, so it can be used as a top layer in better weather . In addition to its insulating properties and breathability, it should be light, windproof and waterproof.

Sailing trousers

When choosing trousers, essentially the same applies as for jackets: waterproof, windproof and highly  resistant to mechanical damage . What else do experienced sailors look for?

  • Reinforced seat and knees
  • Articulated knees
  • Taped seams
  • Elastic waist , giving you more mobility
  • Adjustable ankle cuffs

With or without braces? This depends on you. Trousers with braces are always better at keeping your back dry and warm . The elastic belt then ensures good mobility. And they usually have a well-designed zipper, which is especially handy for men who won’t need to remove them completely.

yacht pay clothing

3. What to wear in medium to severe conditions (OFFSHORE)?

It's getting tough here, so look for clothes that provide the greatest possible protection. The basic requirement of the clothing is breathability and functionality . On long crossings, in more demanding conditions, you’ll appreciate not having to constantly change clothes without fear of fungal infections. Many sailors could tell you a story or two about mould and mildew on their clothing (and then on their skin).

A tight fit that fully  enables freedom of movement  should be a matter of course. For offshore voyages in harsher conditions, high visibility clothing is also suitable. One innovation is the use of photoluminescent technology for night visibility .

yacht pay clothing

What to look for in an offshore sailing jacket?

The fabric of an offshore jacket must be extra durable and waterproof. In addition to the basic requirements of a jacket for medium conditions, you will also appreciate  the following features :

  • Large insulated pockets
  • Insulated high collar , insulated hood
  • Double-layered laminated fabric with a durable water repellent finish
  • Extended hem

Other added benefits would be things such as a loop for attaching a life jacket or a d-ring for attaching tools, flashlights.

In this category, you’ll also find jackets for highly demanding yachtsmen that need to withstand the rigours of a stormy ocean. And how are they different? Protective areas, three or even four-layered fabric, GORE-TEX  membrane or Solas  reflective elements . These jackets are tested in the most demanding conditions (e.g. at the VOLVO Ocean Race) and use cutting-edge technology.

Again, layering  should be used under the jacket.

Trousers for offshore sailing

For more demanding conditions, trousers can be found with, for example, insulated pockets, a thicker fabric and an even greater  emphasis on breathability, water resistance and windproofing than with inshore trousers.

yacht pay clothing

What are the latest trends in the development of yachting apparel?

  • Clothing that is multifunctional  and can be worn whilst walking as well as sailing. It has a more casual and modern look, but retains the features needed on board a yacht. Such clothing includes, for example, the new Henri-Lloyd jacket.
  • Innovative use of colours . The traditional yellow colour has long been replaced by red. Recently there has been a refreshing use of orange, turquoise, blue and even white.
  • Innovation also applies to the fit of the clothing. For example, work is being done on improved peripheral vision while maintaining a high collar.
  • And one of the biggest gadgets is clothing which is battery-powered and actively keeps you warm. This is already well-known among technical divers and older skiers.

yacht pay clothing

How to properly take care of sailing clothes?

Salt can cause a lot of problems. It corrodes cuffs, clogs membranes, damages fabric and colour. Therefore, the most important thing is to always rinse your clothing with fresh water  as soon as possible. Ideally, use a hose in the marina and give your clothing a good shower.

Once in a while it is good to wash the clothes in a  gentle/special detergent  to prevent clogging of membranes, which would reduce the effectiveness of the clothing. Needless to say, the use of fabric softener is a definite no-no. In addition to clogging the membrane and thus virtually destroying the functionality of clothing, its use unnecessarily pollutes the environment and our body.

Ordering superyacht crew uniforms

Yachting Pages

With thanks to Anchors & Dove , Sea Design and Taylor Made Designs

Crew uniforms face some extreme conditions and extended wear on board. Therefore ordering and replacing uniforms becomes a continual task for chief stews and their interior crew.

Crew in uniform on board

With lots to consider when ordering new  yacht uniforms , Yachting Pages spoke to industry experts to guide new yachties through the process.

Ordering new superyacht uniforms

As expected, clients who know what they want are able to move through the process much quicker than those who don’t. As a client you will be able to specify the brands, fabrics, colours and styles that you require. Therefore, it’s worth considering this before approaching suppliers to ensure accurate and competitive quotations.

Looking at the brief itself in more detail, Helen outlined a step-by-step plan for uniform success. Helen Smallwood of Smallwood's Yachtwear said, “The first step is selecting a style and colour scheme that will match with the yacht’s image and meet the tastes of the owners. You should be able to request a full presentation that enables you to visualise how the crew will look. At this point, it is helpful to establish a budget so that the supplier can offer a selection that will stay within the crew uniform allowance.

“Once the style is decided, fabrics have to be chosen according to the preferences and requirements of the owners and crew, styles confirmed, order quantities established and then the process of confirming availability, delivery time, and continuity begins; accurate quotes are then presented. Upon acceptance of these quotes, the orders are processed.”

What needs to be considered when ordering crew uniforms?

Requirements you need to consider are the size, on-board department and everyday activities of your crew members. However, the season, climate and activities that your yacht partakes in should also be considered when selecting yacht crew uniforms.

Helen explained, “It all starts with the right selection of the fabrics. This is followed by tests in the worst conditions to guarantee the product integrity after hundreds of uses and washes. Fitting is a science; it changes with the fashion trends and for us is an ongoing priority.”

Uniform

Uniform fabrics

A good uniform company will be able to identify the best fabrics to be used for each application, without hesitation. For example; 100% wool for a lightweight captain’s suit; a microfibre cloth for leisure shorts; natural fabrics for daytime and heavier fabrics for evening; or a recommendation to select a 97% cotton and 3% elastin blend over 100% cotton for a more comfortable fit.

Uniform sizing

As well as having a creative eye, your uniform supplier should be experienced in the more practical side of design. This helps clients to avoid the common fitting and sizing problems that are experienced in the uniform sector. Ensuring clothing is made ‘true-to-size’ in a range of fabrics is extremely important, especially when hiring a new crewmember. After all, providing them with new workwear should be as simple as asking them which size they require.

Kylie O’Brien, ex-chief stewardess and founder of  The Stewardess Bible  said, “I get asked how much uniform should be ordered a lot. To be honest, it really depends on so many variables; for example, requirements of a 30m sailing yacht will be a lot different to that of a 120m megayacht.”

Uniform

The primary factors to consider include:

  • Is the yacht private or charter?
  • How often does the crew typically change?
  • How often is the style of uniform changed?
  • How much storage is available on board?

For example, less uniform will be needed on board a private yacht where the owners are not on board very often. Especially when crew turnover is minimal.

On her blog, Kylie outlined the typical requirements for a 50m private yacht uniform is updated every few years; the crew changes on average every two years; and the owners are on board a moderate amount of time.

Uniform requirements for a typical charter yacht

  • Four polo shirts
  • Four shorts, skirts, or skorts
  • One pullover
  • One day shoe
  • One night shoe
  • Three-night shirts
  • Two-night trousers or skirts
  • One spray jacket or waterproof

Uniform requirements for a typical private yacht

  • Three t-shirts
  • Three shorts, skirts, or skorts
  • Three trousers

Kylie advised, “It’s important for the engineers and chefs to have the same uniform as everyone else, as well as their technical uniforms. I would simply lessen the amount of general wear to two pieces and issue them with the specific technical uniform that they require.

“I [also] think it’s important to consider the crew’s living space: If you pack the crew cabins with uniform, then ultimately the uniform will get squashed and pushed around to accommodate personal belongings. In the end, you will find that giving crew too many uniforms will therefore just make extra work for the stewardesses.”

Stocking and re-stocking: When to order superyacht uniforms

It’s important to allow enough time when planning new crew uniforms. Big brands and suppliers get extremely busy and often run out of stock during the peak season. As with many scenarios, communication is key: Your uniform provider should be able to advise what and when to order during the early stages of the process.

Helen said, “The replacement of uniforms will depend on several factors: If the boat is private or for charter, the prescribed budget, and of course the quality of the uniforms.

“Some owners will wish to change the uniform style annually. Others will wish to keep the same uniforms for two seasons or more, which will be the case of most of the charter boats too. During this time some items will be added or changed. However, the main part of the uniform program will remain the same. Regarding quantities, it depends on the items, how busy the boat is and the budget.”

Depending on how much work is being done on the uniform, the process can take one week to six months if completely re-designing or bespoke manufacture. Ed Taylor, founder of  Taylor Made Designs , advises that lesser-known, lower-value brands often don’t run out of stock as often as the larger, well-known brands. While Helen suggested that discontinued products are the biggest source of frustration within the industry, making replacements and new additions difficult.

It’s helpful to know how many seasons the garments will be offered for before ordering to ensure easy replacements, as well as delivery speed and global distribution strategy of your supplier for dispatching uniforms for new recruits and emergencies.

Prudence Ellis, an ex-yachtie and founder of new uniforms business  Anchors & Dove  believes QR codes are the way forward when it comes to inventorying and restocking crew uniforms. She said, "Obviously Anchors & Dove is a new entry to the market right now, but when we are more established, I'd eventually love to have an A&D app that was compatible with iPhones and android, where we’d use what is called a QR code on all of our items.

"All the stews would have to do is open the app, scan the QR code every time an item was taken out and it would automatically upload onto A&D's system. That way we’d have eyes on their inventory and would be able to alert them when they are getting low on stock. Once approved, we could then reorder and ship to them. I think this would be so awesome, especially for larger boats who just don’t have the time and too many crew to constantly keep on top of it. In any case, we’ll see how A&D progresses. But with any luck we’ll be launching the app end of next year."

What to wear sailing: Everything you need to know

  • Toby Heppell
  • April 26, 2023

If you're wondering what to wear sailing then you've come to the right place. We've extensively tested loads of kit so we can bring you the best options

yacht pay clothing

Are you are heading out on the water sailing for the first time, or perhaps you’re just curious to see what other wear when sailing, if so, look no further as I bring you my roundup of the absolute must-haves in terms of sailing clothes.

But first thing’s first, not all sailing is alike. I started out racing dinghies throughout my youth and it was not until I was in my late teens and into my 20s that I started racing, and then cruising on yachts or keelboats. The kit required for both of these sports are significantly different and, though you can sail a yacht wearing a wetsuit, it’s not going to do much to keep you warm. Similarly if you step into a dinghy wearing offshore sailing waterproofs (often called foulies) then you’ll be fine, but far from comfortable.

For the purposes of this article I’m going to kook at the clothes you will need to go yacht or keelboat sailing for a day on the water. At Yachting World we have plenty of articles on the best clothing for offshore sailing , the best wetsuits and best clothes to wear for other watersports like best kayak clothing and what to wear paddle boarding . So head over to one of those if that’s what you are after.

Sailing a dinghy on a beach holiday is a common first introduction to sailing, but for many it’s just as likely to be a day trip out on a keelboat, either hired or invited along by some friends who have already fallen in love with sailing and are hoping to pass on some of that joy.

And once you’ve caught the bug it can be hard to know where to start in terms of what clothing you need to buy and what is the most important kit to purchase first.

What to wear sailing

There are several reasons I would put footwear at the top if the list of important clothing items for sailing. Firstly, a good pair of sailing shoes can often be worn ashore too, so it’s not a single-use purchase. Another good reason to buy a pair is that, although sailing on a yacht in trainers is broadly fine, some trainers will leave marks on the deck of a yacht, which can be a bit awkward if you’re leaving unsightly patches on your friend’s new boat. As such, many boat owners have a ‘boat shoes or boots only rule’ when onboard, so you would do well to pick up the best boat shoes you can early.

Decks can often be slippy and for those unused to the motion of a boat at sea, it can be hard enough to keep your footing, so buying a pair of shoes that have good grip will at least help you stay a little more secure.

Given that the main thing you will want out of a pair of boat shoes is grip, then you should focus on what the sole is like first and foremost. Personally, I always favour ‘razor cut’ soles. These tiny little zig-zag grooves – which are thin enough to look like knife cuts – help move water away from the underfoot area and keep the rubber of the sole in contact with the deck. But a word of warning with razor-cut soles, the more you wear them on hard wearing surfaces, such as concrete, the less effective they will become, so it might be worth skipping these if you’re predominantly buying boat shoes for use ashore, with the occasional sailing trip in mind.

The stereotypical boat shoe that probably springs to mind for most is a leather, moccasin style deck shoe. And worry not, these won’t mark you out as a beginner whose only experience of sailing is from the movies, these are actually the shoes that many sailors wear for days out on the water. They can also cut a dash ashore too, so they are probably the best solution for the beginner – and seasoned pro alike.

Tribord Sailing 500 boat shoes

Decathlon is a name that pops up over and again for those wanting to get into many sports. The French sports apparel giant is very hard to beat when it comes to producing decent sports kit at sensible prices.

This classic choice from Decathlon is made of flexible full-grain salt-water resistant leather, with a non-marking siped rubber sole. This sole offers a best of both worlds compromise, not being a true razor-cut, but delivering a great deal of the same grip level in a hard wearing sole for use on land.

There’s a padded leather insole and tongue, but no fabric linings that absorb foot odours.

Zhik Fuze boat shoes

If you’re not keen on the traditional deck shoe look, then Zhik’s Fuze boat shoes are designed as an out-and-out boat shoe but offer more trainer-like styling. Zhik, an Australian company, produces a great deal of sailing kit that is usually developed alongside top international racing sailors and offers great performance – though their equipment does sit at the higher end of the price bracket.

The Fuze deck shoes are very lightweight, flexible and comfortable, with excellent support. A one-way drainage system is incorporated in the sole to let water out but not in. These are my go-to boat shoe if I’m not having a casual day out and their performance in terms of grip and comfort are second to none.

Sailing Jackets and trousers

Although I’ve put footwear at the very top of this list of what to wear sailing for being both relatively affordable and thus an easy first purchase for a new sailor’s kit bag, waterproofs both jacket and trousers are the key items that will keep you warm, dry and comfortable when sailing.

A simple wind and waterproof jacket will be absolutely fine if you are planning on sailing only in the summer months on a very small number of occasions. However, if you are looking to be out on the water with anything approaching regularity then you will want to invest in some proper sailing kit.

There’s no escaping the fact that for a decent set of sailing waterproof clothing, you are going to be spending a fair bit of money. But the cost of a decent sailing jacket and trousers is similar to that of any adventure sport, such as skiing of serious hiking. And these are key items to make you more comfortable and thus enable you to enjoy the experience. Assuming those who are already big-time sailors will be looking elsewhere for the best offshore sailing jackets and trousers, I’ve focussed here on inshore or coastal clothing, which is usually cheaper than true offshore kit and much less bulky.

yacht pay clothing

Gill OS3 Coastal Jacket

Gill’s latest lightweight OS3 fabrics use a fundamentally more sustainable material than the long-running industry standard durable water repellant (DWR) coatings. These have been used for decades to improve waterproofing are are what makes the water bead off a new jacket.

However, DWR finishes are typically based on fluoropolymers that have toxic by-products which persist in the environment. Instead, Gill’s OS3 range uses a plant-based finish the performs the same function as the DWR coating.

The OS3 jacket is made of a two-layer fabric with a non-absorbent, quick drying lining. It has a high-visibility hood, adjustable cuffs with PU inner seals, an internal storm guard and is available in men’s and women’s fits.

Gill OS3 coastal trousers

Utilising the same fabric as their jacket these trousers offer strong sustainability credentials. The trousers feature a front zip and internal gusset for wet weather protection the braces can be adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit while the reinforced seat and knees protect against wear and tear.

I’m not, personally a huge fan of this type of braces. They do offer plenty of adjustment, which is a plus, but they can also slip off the shoulder if you are particularly active. If I have the choice I will always pick a trouser with full shoulders for offshore use, or without shoulder straps. But that is mostly a personal preference and plenty of people still like the braces-type trouser.

yacht pay clothing

Zhik INS200 Coastal Sailing Jacket

There’s a lot to be said for a choosing the best inshore jacket you can find. It will be lightweight, comfortable to wear, very easy to move around in and is likely to see a lot of use.

Zhik’s INS200 and 300 series are arguably the most carefully designed of all. Both are made of an impressive three-layer fabric with taped seams and have a sculpted fit that minimises excess material.

yacht pay clothing

Zhik INS200 Coastal trouser

The matching Zhik INS200 salopettes feature adjustable elastic suspenders with a central back strap for comfort – which also helps stop them slipping off the shoulder.

There’s a waist is elasticated for a secure fit without the need for a tightening system, all seams are taped with critical junctions further reinforced. They also have a laser cut water drainage system to help keep you dry.

Lifejackets and PFDs

It’s absolutely vital that you wear a lifejacket while sailing, particularly if you are new to the sport and don’t yet have great balance onboard. Most boat owners will have rules about wearing them onboard which can vary from ‘must be worn at night and if the wind is above x’ to ‘it’s your personal choice’. But for many people they are an absolute must to wear onboard.

The only reason lifejackets are not at the very top of this list is that many boats have a number of spares for crew to use when they are onboard. But it is something you will want to buy for yourself after a time, both for safety and for your own comfort.

As we found in our best lifejacket test , cheaper models tend to be bulkier and more likely to catch on things as you make your way around the boat. They also typically offer fewer extras. They key thing you need to decide when buying a lifejacket is whether to go for a manual or automatic inflation type. Manual inflation are a lot cheaper – and do not need a new gas canister putting in once they have been inflated. But if you go overboard and are knocked unconscious you clearly wont be able to activate it.

The other point to note is that lifejackets come with different levels of floatation. Most coastal lifejackets are either 150 or 180N.  The higher this number, the more buoyancy is offered. To support a 1Kg weight you need a force of 9.8 Newtons. 1 Newton is equal to 0.225lb. A 150N adult lifejacket will therefore support someone with an in water weight of 15.3Kg or 33.7lbs.

yacht pay clothing

Spinlock Deckvest Lite

Spinlock is pretty universally acknowledged as one of the market leaders in lifejackets and this Deckvest Lite is a really great bit of kit. Its stylish – or as stylish as a lifejacket can be – and it fits close to he body and so is less likely to catch on things as you work on deck.

It’s the manual inflation type and comes in a variety of casing colours and is easy to repack when it has been deployed. It fits smaller adult body types well, has a very high visibility bladder and is great for everyday wear.

The over the head style donning can feel a little restrictive for some and the fit is such that it might not suit larger bodies.

yacht pay clothing

Crewsaver Crewfit+ 180N pro

This is an excellent lifejacket, leading the way with coastal lifejackets that will take you offshore and into the night with its well positioned strobe light and nicely designed sprayhood.

The thoughtful design is apparent throughout, but perhaps was taken one step too far with the CO2 bottle anti-unscrew seal feature making it a poor choice for frequent flyers but an excellent choice for people who worry about their CO2 bottles coming unscrewed.

Waterproof bags

A waterproof bag is useful for sailing and other watersports too. If you’re just taking layers ashore/to the beach, a cheap dry tube style bag will be fine, albeit not overly durable or practical in use and so not the best waterproof bag option to pick. Also the typical single shoulder strap these have is not comfortable when the bag is laden.

It is arguably a better investment to choose a more robust backpack or duffel style bag with external pockets, more comfort features and better waterproofing. It should last longer, better protect your kit and be more comfortable to carry.

yacht pay clothing

Overboard 30lt Pro Sports Backpack

British brand Overboard specialises in waterproof bags and cases with an impressively extensive range and a clear, intuitive website to help you make a suitable choice.

This backpack is a well considered design for dinghy trips ashore and was thus a go-to choice for a week’s vacation, where we used it everyday.

Features I particularly grew to like are the adjustable chest straps and sternum straps which help make it feel like a comfortable hiking backpack, the front mesh for stashing a layer and the side pocket for keeping a water bottle to hand. There is also a small internal pocket for an iPad.

yacht pay clothing

Yeti Panga 50lt

The Panga is among a range of Yeti kit we’ve used and abused regularly this season, all of which has come out favourably and as ‘get what you pay for’ items. Your eyes may water when you see the price, but you can be assured not a drop will find its way into this bag.

The robustness and quality of construction shines through. A laminated high density nylon is used for the bag’s construction, which is really hard wearing, but it is the near bullet-proof moulded EVA padded bottom and the size of the patented teeth on the zip which make you instantly realise this is a no-nonsense product.

There are six lashing points, and the handles at each end and buckles feel sturdy enough to haul a boat out with.

When you pull the zip fully closed it’s easy to tell the bag is hermetically sealed, as it becomes a giant cushion – and indeed can make a useful seat, even with just air inside. There are two zipped mesh pockets within.

Sailing gloves

Sailing gloves are a particularly essential bit of kit for two key reasons. Firstly if you are going to spend any time on a boat then you will be handling sheets and lines. Though salty old seadogs might have well-calloused hands and thus be impervious to the rigours of rope handling. For the rest of us, protection is essential to avoid blisters!

A secondary dimension is to keep your hands warm. This is typically less important for the casual sailor as you’ll probably be out in milder weather and for shorter stretches of time, making it less likely you will get cold hands in the first place and more likely that even if you do, you will be able to warm back up again after a short time.

Unless warmth is the main goal – of you’re sailing off-season or overnight – then you’ll typically want a fingerless glove, which allows you to tie / untie knots and generally be able to use your fingers a bit more.

yacht pay clothing

Decathlon adult sailing fingerless gloves

Sailing gloves can be disappointingly easy to lose, so keeping a spare pair in the bottom of your kit bag can be a good move.

This pair of fingerless gloves from Decathlon is priced such that keeping a few extras around won’t cost a fortune. And for the beginner sailor it means a pair of gloves that are functional but wont break the bank.

They have plenty of grip, offer good protection, are made of a comfortable stretch fabric and have a Velcro wrist strap.

Despite the competitive price the specification is good enough for ordinary use.

Gill Deckhand Sailing Gloves – Long Finger

The Gill Deckhand gloves have been the go-to glove of our tester – and passionate racer – Rupert Holmes for years now. For a while there was a women’s option available which was a much better fit than the unisex version. The full fingers for three fingers provide warmth, while the fingerless thumb and pointer mean you still have plenty of dexterity in the fingers.

The way the glove is tailored to the curve of the hand makes them easy to wear and easy to grip lines and other control surfaces. They do get a bit soggy to wear when wet and Rupert keeps a few pairs to be able to swap out while the others dry off. They usually him a season and need replacing but he keeps buying the same gloves because they are so comfortable to wear.

It’s worth noting that, although these gloves may only last Rupert a season, he is a serious short-handed and fully crewed racer and will put many miles in over the course of a season.

Of course these are just the basic essentials for any aspiring sailor. And there is plenty more kit you may want to pick up as you do more sailing. Sailing sunglasses are very important to protect your eyes, but any sunglasses will do initially. You may also want a hat for sailing or if you are heading out to see in the winter months you might want to pick up the best thermals that you can to keep you warm.

As you become more experienced then picking up a proper offshore sailing jacket and offshore trousers will be important and you will probably want to ditch the boat shoes in favour of a pair of sailing boots .

The Essential Guide to Yacht Crew Uniform Etiquette

  • by yachtman
  • September 20, 2023 August 26, 2023

yacht pay clothing

Yacht crew uniform etiquette is key for sophistication and professionalism on board. A mix of style and function, these uniforms show the crew’s unity and the yacht’s magnificence.

Sailing a luxury yacht requires more than navigation skills. There are unseen rules to follow. Every piece of the uniform – from the captain’s hat to the trousers – exude grace and show commitment to excellence. The choice of fabric, colors and details make clothing symbols.

Behind the tailored pieces is a long, grand history. Legendary sea captains wore these uniforms in storms and uncharted waters. They stood as leaders, epitomizing values through the centuries.

For yachts, mastering uniform etiquette is essential. It pays homage to maritime legends and sets sail towards an elevated experience with charm and refinement. Let’s take this journey into the captivating world of yacht crew uniform etiquette.

The Importance of Yacht Crew Uniform Etiquette

Yacht crew uniform etiquette is essential for creating an efficient, professional environment. It reflects the level of detail and devotion expected in the industry. Plus, a well-dressed crew promotes unity and boosts the yacht’s image.

To understand the importance, think of these factors:

  • Uniform Identification: Uniforms help crew stand out from guests. This makes roles and tasks clear, allowing for smooth operations.
  • Branding: Uniforms represent the yacht’s owner/charter company. They help show a professional image that aligns with the brand.
  • Safety & Security: Properly fitted uniforms with safety gear, help staff perform tasks safely. It also helps them be easily identifiable.
  • Hygiene & Professionalism: Clean, neatly pressed uniforms show professionalism and attention to detail. This makes guests feel more comfortable.

Let’s dive into some unique aspects of yacht crew uniform etiquette:

  • Climate Considerations: Depending on location and season, different types of uniforms may be needed. This ensures comfort and follows dress codes.
  • Accessories & Accents: Along with main uniform components, accessories and accents may be required. These add flair while staying consistent.

For example, an exclusive event was held on a super yacht. The crew dressed immaculately, showcasing utmost professionalism. Guests noticed the seamless coordination and polished appearance. This enhanced their experience and set a standard for future charters.

Dress Code Guidelines

Dress guidelines for yacht crew members are crucial to maintain a professional and polished appearance. The guidelines ensure that crew members wear appropriate attire that aligns with the high standards of the yachting industry.

  • Uniform Requirements: Crew members are expected to wear a designated uniform that reflects the yacht’s brand and image.
  • Grooming Standards: Personal hygiene should be impeccable, and crew members should maintain a well-groomed appearance at all times.
  • Formal Attire: Depending on the occasion or event, crew members may be required to wear formal attire such as suits or evening dresses.
  • Casual Attire: During more relaxed moments, crew members can wear casual attire, but it should still be neat, clean, and in good condition.
  • Footwear: Crew members should wear appropriate footwear that is comfortable, safe, and suitable for the tasks they perform on the yacht.
  • Accessories: While accessories can enhance individual style, they should be kept minimal and tasteful to maintain a professional appearance.

In addition to these dress code guidelines, it is important for crew members to be aware of any specific requirements or variations set by the yacht’s management or the owner. Adhering to these guidelines contributes to a cohesive and professional image of the crew and the yacht as a whole.

As crew members play a vital role in creating a memorable yacht experience, it is imperative to follow the dress code guidelines meticulously. By doing so, crew members will exude confidence and professionalism, ensuring they are well-prepared for any situation. Neglecting to adhere to these guidelines might lead to missed opportunities to create extraordinary experiences for guests, potentially diminishing the reputation of the crew and the yacht.

Why blend in with the yacht crew when you can stand out with formal attire and the sneaking suspicion that you might be mistaken for the captain?

Formal Attire

For men, Formal Attire requires a tailored suit with matching trousers and jacket. Dark or neutral colors such as black, navy blue, or charcoal gray are ideal. Also, a crisp button-down dress shirt in white or light hues is essential. A conservative tie that complements the suit’s color scheme is also needed. To finish the look, polished leather shoes and dark-colored socks are recommended.

Women, on the other hand, should wear an elegant formal gown or a tailored evening dress that falls below the knee or reaches ankle length. The attire must be modest yet sophisticated. Dark or neutral shades such as black, navy blue, or deep burgundy are suitable for formal events. Accessorizing with tasteful jewelry and closed-toe heels will complement the ensemble.

In addition, it is essential to maintain personal hygiene and groom oneself when wearing Formal Attire. Cleanliness is not only attractive but also conveys respect for oneself and others attending the event.

It is worth mentioning that these recommendations may vary depending on particular cultural customs and organizational policies.

Vogue Magazine and other renowned fashion experts believe that following the proper dress code guidelines reflects professionalism and respect towards the event host and attendees.

Casual Attire

Casual attire is a comfy, informal way of dressing that’s great for daily activities and social events. Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal for comfort. Clothing should be well-fitted and free of offensive graphics, logos, and slogans. Shoes such as sneakers, loafers, or sandals should be neat and comfy.

It’s essential to dress nicely in a casual setting. Clothing should be neat and well-groomed. Wrinkled or stained clothes give off a careless vibe. To make a professional impression:

  • Wear clean, non-creased clothing.
  • Pick tasteful colors that coordinate.
  • Accessorize with items like belts, scarves, or jewelry.
  • Keep personal hygiene in mind.

These tips help you find the right balance between comfort and professionalism. First impressions matter, so present yourself in the best light, whatever the dress code is.

Accessories and Grooming

Accessories and grooming play a vital role in the overall appearance and professionalism of yacht crew members. Here are five essential points to consider:

  • Jewelry: Keep accessories minimal and tasteful. Avoid flashy or distracting pieces that can detract from the uniform. Stick to simple earrings, watches, and discreet rings.
  • Hair and Makeup: Maintain a well-groomed and polished look. Hair should be neatly styled and kept out of the face, while makeup should be subtle and enhance natural features. Avoid excessive makeup or hairstyles that may interfere with duties.
  • Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is crucial. Crew members should take extra care to maintain cleanliness, including regular showers, fresh breath, and clean nails. Avoid strong perfumes or colognes that may overpower the yacht’s atmosphere.
  • Uniform Care: Ensure the uniform is properly maintained and ironed. Pay attention to small details like buttoning shirts correctly and wearing the proper shoes. Neatly stow away personal items to maintain a clutter-free appearance.
  • Tattoos and Piercings: While individual policies may vary, discreet tattoos and piercings are generally acceptable. However, it’s important to consider the yacht’s specific guidelines and culture. Covering up visible tattoos and removing excessive or unconventional piercings may be required in certain situations.

In addition to these points, it’s important to remember that maintaining a professional and presentable appearance not only reflects well on the yacht crew but also contributes to a positive guest experience.

True Story:

One yacht crew member, Sarah, had always been known for her impeccable grooming and attention to detail. During a particularly busy charter, a guest accidentally spilled red wine on Sarah’s white uniform. Despite the mishap, Sarah remained composed and quickly changed into a spare uniform, impressing both the guests and her fellow crew members with her professionalism and preparedness. Her commitment to maintaining a polished appearance even in challenging situations earned her commendation from the yacht’s captain and reinforced her reputation as a reliable crew member.

If you’re wearing so much bling on your yacht that you could set off a metal detector from a mile away, you might want to reconsider your career options.

Jewelry and Watches

Jewelry and Watches offer many options. From dainty necklaces to bold earrings, each piece can make your style stand out. Watches not only tell time, but also show your personality.

Let’s look at the components of Jewelry and Watches:

Rings signify love, necklaces are eye-catching, earrings frame the face, and bracelets decorate wrists. Every piece adds its own flair to an outfit, making Jewelry a treasured part of fashion.

Another interesting aspect of this realm is responsible sourcing. Ethical sourcing means raw materials are obtained without harming the environment and fairly traded. Supporting brands that value social responsibility helps meet sustainability goals.

I have a story to share. Last year, my friend bought a necklace from a brand that focuses on ethical practices. Knowing that her accessory was created with minimal environmental impact made her happy.

Jewelry and Watches offer plenty of ways to express yourself and upgrade your look. Whether it’s through stunning pieces or by choosing ethical brands, these accessories help you make a statement without speaking.

Hair and Makeup

Understanding the unique details of Hair and Makeup can really step up your beauty routine. Choosing the right hairstyle for your face shape , and makeup tailored to the occasion , can enhance your features. Experimenting with different hair colors is a fun way to express personality. To have a flawless makeup application that lasts all day, use high-quality products. Plus, don’t forget to moisturize and prime your face – it’s the foundation of any successful makeup look.

For an extra touch, contour and highlight to create dimension on your face without looking overdone. Then, master the art of eyeshadow blending for a striking eye makeup. And, pick the right foundation shade that matches your skin tone for a seamless complexion.

Pro Tip: Wiggle the mascara wand at the base of your lashes before combing upwards to maximize volume and avoid clumps.

Proper Care and Maintenance of Uniforms

Proper Maintenance and Care for Yacht Crew Uniforms

Yacht crew uniforms play a significant role in the overall appearance and professionalism of the crew members. To ensure their longevity and optimal performance, it is essential to adopt proper care and maintenance practices. Here are four key points to consider:

  • Regular Washing : It is crucial to wash yacht crew uniforms regularly to remove dirt, stains, and odor. Follow the specific washing instructions provided by the manufacturer to maintain the quality and color of the garments.
  • Proper Storage : Storing the uniforms correctly is vital to prevent wrinkles, fading, and damage. Hang the uniforms in a well-ventilated area, ensuring they are not exposed to direct sunlight or excessive humidity. Additionally, avoid placing heavy objects on top of the uniforms to maintain their shape.
  • Ironing and Pressing : Ironing or pressing the uniforms before each use enhances the professional appearance. Follow the ironing instructions provided by the manufacturer, using a suitable heat setting for the fabric. Be cautious not to iron over any embroidered or printed logos.
  • Repair and Replacement : Regularly inspect the uniforms for any damages or wear and tear. Repair any loose buttons, zippers, or hems promptly to avoid further damage. When a uniform becomes significantly damaged or worn, consider replacing it with a new one to maintain a polished and unified crew appearance.

When caring for yacht crew uniforms, it’s important to note that each item should be treated with utmost respect and attention to detail. By maintaining impeccable standards, the crew will not only project an air of professionalism but also ensure their uniforms remain in prime condition throughout their work onboard.

Fear of missing out? Don’t fall behind in maintaining your yacht crew uniforms. Follow these care tips to stay ahead and keep your crew looking their best, ensuring a lasting impression on your guests and fellow crew members.

Cleaning and ironing – the only time crew members can turn their anger into steam.

Maintaining the quality and appearance of your uniforms is key. Not taking care of them can make them look shabby and reduce their life span. Here are some tips for cleaning and ironing:

  • Choose the right detergent: When washing, use a gentle detergent. Skip harsh chemicals and bleach, as these can harm the material and cause fading.
  • Separate by color: Before washing, separate the colors to prevent any color mixing. Dark colors should be washed apart from light colors to avoid discoloration.
  • Pre-treat stains: To get tough stains out, pre-treat them prior to washing. This helps remove them more effectively.
  • Ironing the right way: Iron while the uniform is still damp for best results. Adjust the iron’s heat to the type of fabric to prevent damage.

Also, some fabrics may need professional dry cleaning. Check the care instructions for the manufacturer’s guidelines on dry cleaning.

Remember to take good care of your uniforms! Clean and iron them regularly to keep them in great shape. This will help you maintain a smart, professional look in any setting.

Storing and Organization

To keep uniforms in tip-top shape, storing and organizing them is essential. With a structured approach, you can guarantee that your uniforms remain in perfect condition for a longer period.

An orderly uniform storage system not just saves time, but also reduces the likelihood of wear and tear. Here’s how you can store and organize them properly:

  • Clean First: Clean the uniforms prior to storage. This will get rid of any stains or dirt which have developed during use.
  • Categorize: Sort the uniforms according to type or purpose. For example, divide work uniforms from formal ones.
  • Allocate Space: Assign a specific area or storage space exclusively for your uniforms. This will stop them from getting mixed up with other clothing items, diminishing the possibility of damage.
  • Right Hangers: Utilize suitable hangers crafted especially for uniforms. This keeps them in shape and structure.
  • Garment Bags: Think about using garment bags, particularly for delicate or expensive uniforms. This provides extra protection against dust, moths, or other external elements.

By following these instructions, you can make sure that your uniforms are stowed away tidily, making it easier to find specific items when needed.

Pro Tip: Regularly inspect the storage area to detect any signs of pest infestation or moisture. Taking prompt preventive action will help maintain the quality and life of your uniforms.

Uniform Etiquette for Different Yacht Positions

Uniform Etiquette for Various Yacht Roles

Different positions on a yacht require specific uniform etiquette to ensure a professional and cohesive appearance among the crew. Here is a breakdown of the uniform expectations for various yacht positions:

Position | Uniform

First Officer

Chief Engineer

Steward/ess

In addition to the specific uniforms mentioned above, all crew members should maintain clean and well-groomed appearances, with tidy hair, minimal jewelry, and appropriate footwear.

To further enhance the professionalism of the crew, it is essential to adhere to the following suggestions:

  • Dressing in a uniform that suits the duties and responsibilities of each position ensures crew members can carry out their tasks efficiently and safely.
  • Wearing a uniform with the yacht’s logo or emblem fosters a sense of belonging and unity among the crew while also representing the yacht’s brand.
  • Keeping uniforms clean and well-maintained not only portrays a professional image but also shows respect for the yacht and its guests.
  • Paying attention to details such as ironing the uniform, properly tucking in shirts, and wearing appropriate accessories completes the overall polished look.

By following these uniform etiquette guidelines, a yacht crew can present themselves as a unified team, reflecting the highest standards of professionalism and service.

The only stripes that should be on a captain’s uniform are the ones that keep their yacht on course, not the ones that make them look like a referee.

Captain and Officers

The Captain and Officers must uphold order and ensure smooth sailing, for which their uniforms are key. The Captain’s is typically navy or black, with gold buttons and epaulettes showing rank. Officers’ uniforms are similar but without epaulettes; white dress shirt, tie, and black trousers . Separate sets of uniforms should be kept for various events. Clothes must be clean and pressed, and accessories polished. Grooming is also essential – trim hair, shave/groom facial hair, neatly manicured nails. Name tags or badges can help guests identify crew members. Plus, confidence and leadership – these will command respect from both crew and guests.

Stewardesses and Butlers

Stewardesses and Butlers have common duties. However, certain details make them different. Stewardesses excel in housekeeping and detail-oriented tasks. These include cleaning cabins and keeping the yacht interior neat. Butlers , on the other hand, are skilled in food preparation, bartending, and event organizing. They also manage inventories and supervise junior crew members.

For an amazing service, good communication and teamwork are essential for Stewardesses and Butlers.

Deckhands and Engineers

For attire, deckhands and engineers must wear uniforms to meet yacht standards. Deckhands often sport practical clothing, like shorts/pants with a polo or crew t-shirt. Whereas, engineers usually wear coveralls or boiler suits for machinery work.

Footwear-wise, deckhands usually don non-marking deck shoes or sneakers for comfort and safety. Engineers, however, need steel-toed boots for extra protection.

Both staff must maintain a clean and groomed look. Men must have neatly trimmed hair, while women’s hair must be tied back or neatly styled. Minimal jewelry is recommended to avoid accidents.

Did you know? This concept of uniform etiquette actually has naval roots! In the early sailing days, different crew members had special clothing to easily identify their roles. This has since evolved and still exists today to keep order and professionalism on yachts.

Etiquette for Special Occasions and Events

For Special Occasions and Events, proper etiquette is essential. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Dress appropriately for the occasion, ensuring your uniform matches the formality level of the event.
  • Pay attention to grooming and personal hygiene to present a polished appearance.
  • Follow protocols for introductions and greetings, showing respect and courtesy to all attendees.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations set by the event organizers, maintaining professionalism at all times.

In addition to these points, it is important to remember that each event may have its own unique requirements. Stay informed about any specific guidelines communicated to you and adapt accordingly.

Pro Tip: Familiarize yourself with the event’s schedule and agenda in advance to anticipate any special requirements or protocols.

Dressing the part for a yacht crew is like playing hide and seek with a fashion twist – you want to be noticed when they see you, but you also want to be invisible when they don’t.

Guest Arrival and Departure

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to greet the host and other guests.
  • Take off your outerwear, such as coats or jackets, and store them in designated areas.
  • Present any gifts for the host when you arrive.
  • Speak in a mindful volume so as not to disturb other guests who are already settled in.
  • When leaving, be sure to bid farewell graciously without disrupting ongoing conversations or activities.
  • Don’t forget to return any borrowed items before you depart.
  • As a final gesture, send a thank-you note or message after attending the event to express your appreciation.

Formal Dinners and Parties

For hosting a formal dinner or party, consider the following guide:

  • Dress Code: Formal attire is expected; like tuxedos and evening gowns. Adhering to the dress code is important to maintain the desired ambience.
  • Seating Arrangement: Assign seats to promote conversations between guests. Consider their interests and keep a balanced mix of personalities.
  • Table Setting: Place cutlery, glassware, crockery properly. Fold napkins neatly for an elegant touch.
  • Menu Selection: Offer a thought-out menu that caters to various dietary preferences and restrictions. Consult with professional chefs if needed.
  • Dining Etiquette: Teach guests basic dining etiquette. Like using utensils correctly, wait for everyone to be served before eating, and engage in polite conversation during the meal.

Creating an ambience of sophistication while making guests feel comfortable and relaxed is key! Special hosts or hostesses who oversee the event’s smooth flow also set formal dinners apart. They must ensure everything runs perfectly; from welcoming guests to coordinating service staff. Remember cultural customs and traditions associated with formal dinners too!

True Fact: Formal dinners were popularized during the Victorian era when elaborate meals became commonplace among high society circles.

Proper etiquette makes for an unforgettable experience at formal dinners and parties, leaving a lasting impression on your guests.

Watersports and Outdoor Activities

  • Safety first! Wear protective gear like life jackets and helmets. Learn the rules and regulations of the sport.
  • Respect nature. Don’t litter. Leave behind only memories.
  • Be prepared! Check weather conditions and equip yourself with the necessary tools.
  • Be considerate. Follow any guidelines and etiquette. Respect other participants.

Plus, each watersport and outdoor activity has different requirements. Scuba diving needs certifications and dive site protocols. Paddleboarding needs balancing techniques.

Pro Tip: Before starting, take a look at local regulations. Different places may have rules to ensure safety.

Yacht crew uniform etiquette is complex. We discussed colors, fabrics, grooming and personal presentation. Let’s highlight the key points!

First, professionalism is vital. A well-maintained uniform shows dedication, and details like name badges and accessories contribute to a unified look.

Second, be aware of hierarchy when choosing outfits. Interior and exterior departments have different requirements.

Third, be sensitive to cultural differences. Research local customs before trips to show respect.

Finally, appearance is important in the yachting industry. Adherence to uniform guidelines will create a lasting impression on guests and crew.

Also, customer satisfaction levels on charters are higher with proper uniform adherence.

Yacht Crew Uniforms. What’s Your Style?

There’s no denying that brands, say, the likes of Musto, Henri Lloyd and the other usual suspects produce some of the finest foul and wet weather protective clothing available today. After all, they have developed their clothing over the years with Round the World Yacht races, countless inshore and dinghy competitions and so on, but that’s not the mainstay activity of a superyacht.

The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

Three flexible plans and thousands of chic styles.

  • What’s notable: Versatile selection of everyday fashion brands known for high-quality basics—think long sleeve tees, trousers and cashmere sweaters—that you can rent or purchase with flexible monthly plans.
  • What could be better: Only four items per box included in the basic plan.

Similar to Rent the Runway, Armoire is a rental subscription service but its price point is slightly more affordable. The brand mix includes Boden, Paige, Diane Von Furstenberg and Rag & Bone. You can keep styles as long as you want or swap them out, and the idea is to build a capsule collection you can easily rotate every few weeks. Three different plans range from $89 for four items with one swap per month to $249 for for six items with unlimited swaps. The initial style quiz identifies your fashion preferences and sizing, and then the stylists—and the algorithm—start to learn your preferences.

What else to know: Sizes extend from 0 to 24; shipping and returns are free. Dry cleaning, minor repairs from wear and tear are complimentary. Cancel or pause your subscription anytime, so long as it’s at least 72 hours before your next renewal date.

Best Plus-Size Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Size-inclusive service with polished brands, dia & co.

  • What’s notable: This size-inclusive retailer’s subscription box includes stylish picks that range from casual denim to cocktail attire and more.
  • What could be better: Only one monthly plan, no swaps allowed.

Dia & Co carries an extensive selection of size-inclusive brands, including 11 Honoré, Estelle and Ever-Pretty. The Dia Styling Box includes five hand-picked items, including clothing and accessories, based on your styling quiz preferences. You’ll have five days to decide if you want to keep or send back items (if you buy one or more items from your box the $20 styling fee is waived.) The clothing is well-made and on-trend for parties and events, with shoppers especially keen on the assortment of tops, sweaters, dresses, pants, jacket and workout clothes.

What else to know: Sizes range from oX to 5X; free shipping and returns. You can request a complimentary extension on your try-on period, and cancel your box anytime before it’s shipped.

Best Petite Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Women-owned brand that caters to petite proportions, short story.

  • What’s notable: No more tailoring needed—this service is all about smart, stylish, well-made pieces (from denim to work skirts to floral dresses) for those 5'4" or under, at sizes that range from 00P to 20P.
  • What could be better: Only one monthly plan with no swaps.

Short Story is entirely devoted to clothing tailored to petite frames (FYI: “petite” is about height, not size). After taking a short quiz, you’re matched with a stylist who handpicks five to six items for you to try on at home. You have five days to decide what to keep—items typically cost between $35 to $150—and you can mail back anything you don’t want using the pre-paid return label. The $25 styling fee is credited toward any current box purchases, and while there are fewer brands in the mix (not all offer petite sizing), Short Story does an excellent job of curating chic, eye-catching outfits from Amour Vert, Good American, Liverpool and more brands.

What else to know: Boxes can be scheduled to ship every month, two months, three months, or longer. Shipping and returns are free; cancel or skip a delivery before your next order (typically one week in advance).

Pierce Brosnan just took a plea deal in his hot springs hiking case out in Idaho ... this after initially entering a not-guilty plea just two months ago.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ ... Pierce pled guilty to one of two charges brought against him -- namely, one count of foot travel in all thermal areas and within Yellowstone Canyon confined to trails -- after he allegedly wandered into a delicate hot spring at Yellowstone National Park in November 2023.

In exchange, the other charge was dismissed. Brosnan's guilty plea lands him with about $1,540 in fines and other court costs.

Remember ... 007 appeared to post a couple pics from an off-limits area in the park -- areas that are closed to tourists for both the safety of the springs and the safety of hikers.

Those pics got picked up by TouronsOfYellowstone -- an IG page that highlights the tourists/morons who break hiking rules in the gorgeous national park.

Brosnan was facing a fine of up to $5,000 or even six months jail time if he was found guilty ... instead, it seems like the star's putting this legal issue to rest.
