Dutch-built yachts: a rich tradition of excellence.

The world of yacht building has a rich history, and one country that stands out for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovation is the Netherlands. Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world's very best. With a prestigious history of boat building that dates back centuries, the Netherlands has emerged as a hub for high-value, high-quality yacht construction.

A history of Dutch boat building

The dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry can be traced back to the 1500s. The word "yacht" is from the Dutch word "jacht," which means hunting or hunt. The Dutch navy initially used yachts as light, fast sailing vessels to pursue pirates and other transgressors in the shallow waters of the Low Countries. However, wealthy Dutch merchants soon became interested in these vessels and began building private yachts for pleasure trips.

By the start of the 17th century, the Dutch had developed two categories of yachts: speel-jachten (or: pleasure yachts) for sport and oorlog-jachten (or: war yachts) for naval duties. Wealthy individuals began using their yachts for pleasure trips, and large "jacht" fleets were found along the Dutch coast. These early yachts varied in size and had a fore/aft gaff rig with a flat bottom and lee boards to allow operations in shallow waters.

This historical connection to the sea and maritime activities laid a solid foundation for the Dutch to excel in yacht construction.

Recognized as a world leader in building pure custom yachts, Feadship has been in pursuit of building the perfect ship since its inception in 1949 – although the brand can trace its roots back another 100 years. With each new ship that Feadship builds, its team employs the most cutting-edge methods and materials available, which when paired with its unpromising attitude toward fulfilling its clients’ desires, promises to deliver some of the most technically advanced yachts in the world – including the recently revealed Project 817 , which has now been delivered as Viva.

Environmental awareness is core to each Oceanco project, with the aim of not only meeting but surpassing environmental legislation with each build. Even its largest yacht to date – the 394-foot Redentore, which is still under construction – is impressively efficient thanks to her hybrid propulsions system, which keeps fuel consumption to a minimum. Other noteworthy Oceanco’s builds are the striking three-masted Black Pearl , which is powered by a combination of wind power and electric propulsion motors, and one of its latest concepts, Esquel  – an advanced expedition vessel.

Electra Superyacht

Dutch luxury shipbuilder Heesen has received worldwide recognition for its engineering and design prowess since launching in 1978. Heesen proudly pioneers the use of aluminum, which is widely regarded as the premium yacht-building material thanks to its lightness owing to better efficiency. As well as full custom builds, Heesen offers a platform concept that features semi-custom yachts already under construction in order to dramatically cut down delivery waits, without compromising on quality.

One of Heesen’s most notable yachts is Alive, which was the first to feature the revolutionary Hull Vane technology (underwater foil) for greater efficiency and speed, resulting in up to 30% less fuel consumption than a regular yacht. Other celebrated Heesen’s builds are Home and Electra , delivered in 2017 and 2020 respectively, both of which were in the award-winning 5000 FHDF aluminum hybrid class and came as a result of Heesen’s strive to limit the environmental impact of yachting.

luminosity yacht benetti

Part of the Azimut-Benetti Group, Benetti Yachts can trace its shipbuilding heritage all the way back to 1873 when the Fratelli Benetti shipyard was founded in the Tuscan city of Viareggio – the center of classic Italian shipbuilding. While much has changed in Benetti’s near 150-year lifetime, its focus on building state-of-the-art yachts to impeccably high standards has not, cementing its status as one of the best luxury yacht builders in the world.

As concerns on the environmental impact of private yachts have grown over time, Benetti has adapted its methods accordingly, utilizing hybrid technology to ensure its ships are at the forefront of sustainability. For example, when the Luminosity was first delivered in 2019 she was hailed as one of the greenest superyachts on the sea. The 352-foot yacht features advanced diesel-electric hybrid power, with her powerful battery providing up to 12 silent and emission-free hours at anchor.

Of course, sustainability doesn’t come at the cost of style: the Luminosity features a stunningly designed interior courtesy of Zaniz Jakubowski, with full-length windows drawing the outside in, and tasteful nods to contemporary artists creating a true home away from home.

Europe rules the roost when it comes to the top yacht builders in the world – the fifth in our list hails from Germany, with eight yards dotted throughout the country including main sites in Bremen, Hamburg and Rensburg. As with most yacht building companies, Lürssen is family run having been first founded in 1870 by Friedrick Lürssen. Since then the company has developed an esteemed reputation as one of the best in the world, breaking many records along the way, including the longest yacht in the world with Azza in 2015, which measures 592 feet, and Flying Fox which is the largest superyacht available for charter.

Lürssen’s latest superyacht is the sizeable 465.5-foot Nord (previously called Project Opus). Nord transcends the typical design of a superyacht thanks to the work of Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard, which was responsible for the yacht’s striking interior and exterior.

As is becoming standard for leading yacht builders, Lürssen is acutely aware of the negative environmental impact of both building and owning yachts. It is taking appropriate action to help mitigate this damage, including providing significant funding to marine life charities and conservation projects and implementing pioneering technologies such as onboard compact silencers and hybrid motor concepts.

Royal Huisman

Ethereal yacht by royal huisman

With a history that dates back to 1884, Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman proudly stakes a claim as one of the oldest yacht builders in the world. While the company was originally founded to build modest wooden fishing boats, its operations have deftly grown with the times, and Royal Huisman is now responsible for some of the finest and most luxurious yachts cruising the ocean today.

Although best known for its stunning sailing yachts ( Sea Eagle II, Ethereal  and  Aquarius  are particular knock-outs) Royal Huisman has also successfully branched out into the world of motor yachts. Its most recent build is the 192-ft Phi,  which was delivered in 2021. This super-slick aluminum yacht has space for up to 12 guests and since her maiden voyage, has been seen cruising on the Thames through London’s financial district. An apt setting for a yacht of this caliber.

Damen Yachting

Damen Yachting, which falls under the umbrella of the wider Damen Shipyards Group, is another Dutch yacht builder dominating the world stage. Operating as Damen’s building division, Damen Yachting was only formed in its existing state in 2019 and is now responsible for the building of the famous Amels yachts, as well as the SeaXplorer expedition ships and yacht support vessels. Since moving its Amels building operations to Vlissingen in 2003, Damen Shipyards proudly boasts the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands.

As a company of this magnitude, Damen Yachting naturally has some impressive builds under its belt, including the newest in the Limited Editions semi-custom range: the Amels 60 . Currently under construction with an estimated delivery of 2022, the 197-foot Amels 60  uses a fuel-efficient hybrid propulsions system to slash emissions, cut noise pollution and minimize fuel and maintenance costs.

Italian-born Sanlorenzo is continuously regarded as being among the best in class when it comes to yacht builders and has been the recipient of numerous awards in its near-65 year lifetime. Despite Sanlorenzo’s longevity and established status, it remains a truly boutique luxury yacht builder at heart. To ensure the attention to detail and high quality for which it is famous for, as well as securing exclusivity for its clients, Sanlorenzo is committed to working with a limited number of customers each year.

In true Italian style, the superyachts that leave Sanlorenzo’s main La Spezia shipyard transcend trends; instead, they exude classic style and authentic craftsmanship. Combined, this guarantees a truly timeless finish – of which the current flagship Attila is a perfect example. Sanlorenzo specializes in fiberglass, steel and aluminum, ensuring that each owner can select a material to befit their needs.

Despite dating back over a hundred years, German luxury yacht builder Nobiskrug always has one eye on the future with a steadfast commitment to innovation. Nobiskrug offers fully custom yacht builds, working directly with owners to fulfill their unique vision, as well as working on ship refits. The company operates out of world-class yacht-building facilities in the city of Rendsburg, which include a climate-controlled superyacht hall.

The need to strive for innovation extends to Nobiskrug’s environmental commitments, where it applies advanced technologies in order to limit the impact of its builds. For example, Artefact – which was first delivered in 2020 – was one of the first superyachts to be built in line with the IMO Tier III regulations (which focus on reducing emissions). Artefact uses onboard solar panels and a battery storage system to allow for a limited period of engineless operation, as well as adopting a waste-water recycling system.

Dutch yacht building

Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world’s very best, with an extraordinary density of high quality, high value shipyards operating out of the Netherlands.

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.

NOTABLE DUTC H YACHT BUILDERS

This prestige brand is often known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of yacht builders, constructing fully custom yachts from a ‘blank slate’ beginning. Feadship is actually a partnership between two of the greatest Dutch shipyards: De Vries and Royal Van Lent, with yacht building roots dating back to 1849. The Feadship fleet today is more than 450 strong, and includes some ground-breaking yachts.

Superyacht building – A growing industry in times of a pandemic

by Mariska Buitendijk | Oct 14, 2021 | News , Shipbuilding , Yachts

dutch yacht building

While the world’s biggest cruise shipbuilders in especially Germany got into serious financial troubles and had to lay off thousands of workers and the whole cruise industry came to a total standstill, the Dutch specialists in the building of superyachts enjoyed a very good year last year. The number of orders they received in fact doubled.

In every issue of SWZ|Maritime, SWZ|Maritime’s editor-in-chief Antoon Oosting writes an opinion piece under the heading “Markets” about the maritime industry or a particular sector within it. In the September 2021 issue, he discusses the Dutch yacht building industry.

It is, to say the least, particularly noteworthy, striking and at the same time uplifting for the Dutch shipbuilding industry that the yacht industry is doing so well. In a recent podcast of Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT), project director Roderick Gort of Dutch superyacht builder Oceanco from Alblasserdam confirmed that the near future prospects for his yard and its Dutch competitors like Feadship, Damen Yachting, Royal Huisman, Heesen and Moonen are just fine. ‘There is a healthy commercial market,’ Gort said.

The fact that at the end of 2020 the Dutch yards were building no less than thirteen superyachts on speculation, meaning they started construction without yet having a customer for it, is a clear sign of the confidence that the yards have in the future. Confidence that is based on excellent figures on new orders. From new orders worth € 1.067 billion in 2018 and € 1.012 billion in 2019, the newly received orders rose to a staggering € 2.150 billion last year. With this, the value of the total orderbook grew from € 4.078 billion in 2018 and € 4.021 billion in 2019 to a very healthy volume of € 5.380 billion last year. I bet there aren’t that many people who would have dared to predict this in January/February 2020, when the world turned into a deep crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A very uncertain market

In the podcast, Gort also told that at the beginning of 2020, the atmosphere was very uncertain. The yard’s management monitored the developments of the pandemic from day to day and decided to take measures at an early stage. The obligation to wear a face mask in the workplace was implemented and everyone who was not constantly needed at the offices in Alblasserdam and the recently acquired new facilities in Zwijndrecht had to work from home.

The workers that had to keep working on the yachts, including the personnel of suppliers, had to be tested every day. Oceanco has set up its own test site for this. ‘All this to be able to work safely… Our suppliers, too, realy appreciated this way of working. It has created a very safe working environment and allowed us to continue working in full,’ Gort explained. And there was enough work, as after the first uncertain months in spring, the first orders began dropping in.

Richest man in the world

A clear sign that despite the first panic about the economic consequences of the pandemic the superyacht business was not doing so badly at all, were the reports in May 2020 that the at that moment richest man in the world – e-commerce giant Amazon’s Jeff Bezos – had ordered a 127-metre three-mast yacht at Oceanco. This mega sailing yacht worth several hundreds of millions of euros will be accompanied by a smaller ship with a helicopter platform to provide the yacht with supplies. Whatever one might think about the superrich that always get richer, this is also a huge compliment to the Dutch superyacht industry and recognition of the unrivalled quality the Dutch yards can deliver.

Like Genie, the genie from Aladdin’s lamp, the Dutch yacht builders make the dreams of their clients come true. And like Oceanco’s project director Gort pointed out, the clients are dreaming of a unique and everbigger, longer yacht. So, the yachts are getting longer and more and more custom built. And about ten years ago, the Dutch yacht builders were especially strong in building yachts from thirty to sixty or seventy metres, but now they compete with the German yards that were always building the biggest yachts.

Moreover, in the category of less than 100 metres, the Dutch yards continue to be a strong competitor to the Germans and especially the Italian and Turkish yards.

dutch yacht building

A good year

Like Feadship, Damen Yachting, Oceanco, Royal Huisman, Heesen and Moonen all booked good results in 2020. According to the annual report of NMT, the size of the yachts delivered varied between 24 and 120 metres. The Netherlands is building ever larger yachts. In 2020, six yachts were sold that were eighty metres or larger (megayachts). In 2019, that was still only one. The orderbook of the Dutch yards currently contains fifteen yachts of eighty metres or larger.

NMT warns that the growing amount of work also has a downside. Several suppliers can’t process more orders as the workloads are greater than they can normally handle. NMT emphasizes the need for more intensive cooperation between yards and suppliers.

Due to the pandemic and travel restrictions imposed by authorities, a lot of shows were cancelled and even the selling process was hit. Royal Huisman and Moonen did manage to sell some ships online, however.

Travel restrictions

Those travel restrictions also hampered the construction of the yachts as clients, supervisors and superintendents that must monitor refits, and future crews, who had to be trained with their new ship, experienced difficulties with entering the Netherlands. Deliveries were not always easy to handle. But when NMT published its annual report in May this year, it could also be reported that this matter had successfully been solved in good cooperation with the responsible department and border control.

Travelling easily to and from the Netherlands is also a basic precondition for the refitting of yachts. Under the umbrella of NMT, the yacht building industry works together in the Holland Yachting Group to strengthen the interests of the Dutch yacht building industry. One of the opportunities the Holland Yachting Group has identified, is the growing need for refits. Super- and megayachts change ownership ever more often, or the owners want their ships modified and adjusted to the requirements of the future or to make the propulsion and energy systems of the ships more sustainable.

For still just a decade ago, clients often wanted their newbuilt superyacht to be able to sail fast. So, superyachts were often equipped with very powerful engines that used a lot of fuel. But sailing at high speed often goes at the cost of comfort with more noise and vibration. Yet, according to the project director of Oceanco, owners are also becoming aware that installing so much power often has no sense and nowadays there is more need for a more efficient power train that uses far less energy.

The Dutch are warming up to refits

‘Customers like to come back to the original builder of their yacht,’ Gort stated in the NMT podcast. ‘The original builder has the network of suppliers and can meet any requirements demanded by the customer at short notice. As a result, the barrier to sail their yacht to northwestern Europe is gone.’

With this in mind, Oceanco has taken over the former yard of offshore supplier Heerema in Zwijndrecht and Royal Huisman has opened a new site in Amsterdam. Royal Van Lent, which belongs to the Feadship group, has also opened a second yard, in addition to the one on Kaag island, in the Amsterdam port area. In the port of Rotterdam there are initiatives as well to do more with the refit of super- and megayachts.

While for many in the Netherlands the superyacht industry stays a rather unknown sector, the Dutch superyacht yards have an excellent reputation. Every year, new Dutch yachts are awarded important professional prizes. In 2020, Feadship won awards with three yachts at the World SuperYacht Awards. These were M/Y Pi (Motor yacht of the year, displacement motor yachts between 1500 GT and 1999 GT); M/Y Najiba (Displacement motor yachts between 500 GT and 999 GT); and M/Y Lady S (Displacement motor yachts between 2000 GT and 4999 GT). Another award went to Royal Huisman/Huisfit for the refit of S/Y Vagrant (category Re-built yachts).

The yacht as a corona bubble

For the success of the superyacht in a time that the world has suffered an enormous amount of casualties and a lot of people as well as the economy have to conform to annoying restrictions, Oceanco’s project director Gort has a statement as remarkable as it is simple. Super- and megayachts offer a private and safe area to pass your holidays, in easily controlled surroundings. The crew of a superyacht consists of up to fifteen or twenty people plus the guests that the owner chooses himself.

That is of course a number of people that is far more easily controlled and tested than those on a big cruise ship where the number of passengers and crew can be up to 7000 or 8000 (Oasis-class Royal Caribbean). ‘A superyacht is easy to control and to keep clean,’ according to Gort.

Dutch Shipbuilding in the Golden Age

Richard W. Unger explores how technical superiority, the discovery of the advantages of specialisation in design, and the extensive exploitation of that discovery gave the Dutch domination of the European shipbuilding industry by the beginning of the seventeenth century.

The shipbuilding industry was one of the cornerstones of the economic prosperity of the golden century. By 1600 Dutch shipbuilders dominated the European market, selling their products to buyers from Riga in the Baltic to Venice in the Adriatic. The success of the industry was based on its 1nw costs and on the technical superiority of its product. Dutch shipbuilders used more efficient building methods and produced ships of better design than their European rivals. In the fifteenth century, however, Dutch shipwrights had been far behind them. At that time German builders produced a modified hulk which was the most effective bulk carrier in northern Europe. These hulks brought grain from the Baltic to the Low Countries and carried salt back. The full-rigged ship that was the vehicle for European expansion had to be imported into the Netherlands from southern Europe. It carried a combination of square and lateen sails; its hull was of Mediterranean construction, strength coming from the internal frame and not from the external planking.

Feadship Information Worth Knowing

Shipyard spotlight Feadship

With a population of just 17 million people, The Netherlands has an outsized influence on the Global Yachting stage, with the highest number of world class yacht builders per capita than any other nation, all wedged into a country smaller than the size of West Virginia.

Dutch Yacht Building

Founded after WWII in 1949, to help re-ignite the Dutch Yacht building industry, it was a marketing initiative aimed at the US market and was initially formed by Henri de Voogt, a naval architect, in association with Van Lent and De Vries family boat yards.  By 1968 there were 7 companies in Feadship, including the original 3 companies.

Today, Feadship consists of the 2 original founding shipyards, plusde Voogt the Naval Architecture and Engineering firm Feadship have acquired a lot of their original sub-contracting companies, to bring a lot of the disciplines “in-house”, with a combined work force of some 2,300+ workers.

dutch yacht building

Both companies received their “Royal” Dutch designations, which means continuous lineage and operation of 100 years – thus now Royal De Vries (designation in 2006) and Royal Van Lent (in 2001). The Van Lent company was sold to LVMH in 2001, while Royal De Vries still remains in the family.

It is quite remarkable that 2 privately and separately owned companies, still manage to maintain a common public persona and intimately coordinate sales and logistics after all these decades.

De Vries Yard

Currently De Vries operates 2 yacht building facilities –  the original facility, located in the small town of Aalsmeer, just south of Amsterdam, consists of 50,000m2/538,000ft2 of construction sheds and has launched the 92m “Aquarius” in 2016, the largest yacht built at the facility . Actually it is not so much length that restricts the size of construction at this yard, but beam, which due to the size of locks that have to be navigated to get the vessels to sea.

dutch yacht building

The 2 nd facility operated by De Vries is located in Makkum, an hours drive north of Amsterdam, which was purchased from Amels/Damen Shipyards in 2005. This facility, located on 17+ acres of land, boasts a drydock and building shed of some 170m/557’ in length and is capable of building yachts of 120m+ and indeed is where De Vries has launched its largest yachts from  – the largest to date is “Madame Gu” at 99m, which was launched in 2013, however there is a 110m vessel under construction that is due for delivery late 2018.

dutch yacht building

Yacht yards use “yard build numbers” to initially refer to the new builds, which of course can be used to trace the history of each vessel. De Vries use 2 different numbering systems to differentiate between the 2 yards, with vessels being built at Makkum started with yard #1001 (launched as “Ocean Victory”, now “Ebony Shine”).

While at the Aalsmeer facility, the company is up to yard number #701, a 51m Explorer vessel.

Royal Van Lent Yard

The original facility, located at  De Kaag Island, a small village south of Amsetrdam, dates back to 1849! This facility has built the longest Feadship launched to date – “Symphony” at 101.5m/333’, in 2015, for the Chairman of LVMH. Royal Van Lent is building a new facility in Amsterdam, which will be capable of building the largest Feadship’s (up to 160m/525’). Consisting of a 170m dock/shed, the facility is due for completion in 2019 and is already rumored to be the site for construction of a 118m yacht, the biggest in Dutch yacht building history. More information on Feadship’s new facility here .

dutch yacht building

Feadship currently have 17 vessels at various stages, in construction, (10 at De Vries and 7 at Van Lent), across the 3 (soon to be 4) facilities and like most yards use a combination of sub-contractors and interior disciplines to build their yachts. As previously stated, over the years the companies have acquired a number of their major sub-contractors:

Scheepswerf Slob – A steel hull and aluminum metal fabrication facility

Van der Loo interiors (although the majority of interior refitting is still carried out by independent, high end yacht furniture companies, such as List and  Struik & Hammerslag)

Akerboom Yacht Equipment – manufacturers of Cranes, davits, gangways, passarelles, hatches and hinged platforms, etc.

While some disciplines are outsourced, the combined companies are predominantly Dutch and virtually everything is “bespoke” (custom built), right down to the hinges for doors, which are custom manufactured in house!

dutch yacht building

Most Feadships are custom designed and built as “one off” vessels, specifically for each individual client and offer a very varied cross section of styles and performance, from large steel displacement yachts to a 49m – 30kt all aluminum yacht currently in build at De Vries.

dutch yacht building

However over the years Feadship have built several “lines” of “semi custom” vessels – i.e. vessels with a common hull, superstructure and engineering package, but an ability to customize the interior décor/layout. This includes the 45m series F45 (5 were launched). The latest model – the recently delivered 34m/111-113’ series motoryachts, the smallest Feadships being delivered for many years. The company only went ahead with this project when an existing client, who owned a larger Feadship asked them to build a smaller vessel. The company said they would, if the client could persuade 3 of his friends to also build a boat using the same platform! To date the company has built 5 x 34m yachts, the first being delivered in 2016.

dutch yacht building

While Feadship builds their yachts for customers around the world, their most important single consistent market, is still the USA, with some 50+ % of their production being sold into the States on a regular basis.

Moscow’s Garage contemporary art museum , founded by businesswoman and art collector Darya Zhukova, has reopened in new premises in the Russian capital’s famous Gorky Park.

The museum, which opened on June 12, now occupies an old restaurant building that has been restored by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and boasts impressive functional capabilities. It has five exhibition halls, auditoriums, a conference hall, a bookstore and a café.

Garage’s launch program features eight art projects aimed to reflect the range of the museum’s current interests, with the artists on display including Japan’s Yayoi Kusama, Thai conceptual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, and German painter Katharina Grosse. In September, Garage plans to launch a major exhibition of the legendary French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois.

Garage director Anton Belov is very pleased with the work that has been done so far: “I hope that the opening of a new museum will be a good example of the opportunities that Moscow, and Russia as a whole, currently enjoy,” he said.

Start and take-off

The story of Garage began in 2008, when art collector and businesswoman Darya Zhukova, partner of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , masterminded the reconstruction of the Bakhmetyev bus depot, located in a historical building designed by the famous constructivist architect Konstantin Melnikov . As a result of the reconstruction, the building, originally built in 1927, preserved its outward appearance but was completely transformed inside to become a large center of modern culture.

Garage had no commercial targets to achieve: Its mission was one of education and culture. Primarily, it sought to introduce the general public to works of contemporary art from different parts of the world. Naturally, a similar mission was partly fulfilled by state-run museums too, but Garage had certain additional advantages in the form of freedom of choice when it came to its priorities and a considerable budget (it was reported to be spending $13–15 million a year).

Building on these advantages, the center soon became very popular with the public. Its first major success was a large-scale exhibition of works by renowned Russian artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov , followed by exhibitions of works by James Turrell, Antony Gormley and Mark Rothko and a major display of French businessman and art collector François Pinault’s collection. With time, this impressive foreign menu was supplemented by Russian exhibition projects as well as culture and education programs.

Down to Gorky Park

However, late 2011 brought a worrying pause, as Garage – in line with an earlier agreement – ceded its premises to the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center. Rumors abounded as to what would happen next. In the end, Zhukova chose to move to the newly renovated Gorky Park , where Japanese architect Shigeru Ban built a makeshift pavilion for Garage. The new venue soon gained popularity too. It was there that the decision to change the status of Garage was taken: A year ago, the founders announced its transformation into a museum. Their strategic plan was to launch another venue located nearby.

The restaurant, called Vremena Goda (Seasons of the Year), was built in 1968 and was very popular in the Soviet years but fell on hard times in the early 1990s. The Dutch architecture studio OMA, which took on the reconstruction project, had practically just ruins left to work on.

The studio’s head, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas, has many prestigious projects under his belt. In May this year he unveiled the Prada Foundation art center in Milan, built in a converted industrial complex belonging to a former distillery. Koolhaas had earlier made several attempts to work in Russia, but the projects failed to materialize. So he greeted the Garage project with particular enthusiasm.

The architect summed up his task thus: “We are not restoring the building, we are preserving its decay.” Paradoxically, the drastic reconstruction went hand in hand with a careful preservation of elements of the restaurant décor, which had been largely lost.

New ambitions

At the completion of the $27-million project, the building is a two-storey rectangular block with a total area of 5,400 square meters, whose facades are decorated with semi-transparent polycarbonate. One characteristic feature, designed to become the museum’s visual brand, is a gate opened upwards, making it possible to see all the way through the atrium. To mark the opening of the Garage museum, artist Erik Bulatov created two monumental paintings to be displayed in the atrium.

The administration of the museum has indicated that the relocation to the new space means not only a commitment to its previous policy but also an increase in international ambitions. As chief curator Kate Fowle explains: “If seven years ago Garage’s main objective was to bring internationally significant projects to Moscow, now we would like to export equally significant projects from Moscow to other cities of the world.”

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
