To hook the world’s biggest fighting fish, in the words of Chief Brody in the classic 1975 movie Jaws , “You’re going to need a bigger boat.”

Privately owned fishing boats won’t come any bigger than this astonishing 171-foot super-luxury sportfisherman, set to claim the title of “World’s Largest Sportfish Superyacht.”

Designed by Dutch naval architects Vripack , and soon to start construction at the Royal Huisman yard in the Netherlands, Project 406 as it’s currently codenamed, will be a fast “battlewagon,” designed to chase marlin, swordfish and sailfish to the ends of the earth. “Project 406 is a sportfishing machine on steroids,” Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis told Robb Report . “It has the proportions of a typical American sportfishing yacht, with a long, flaring bow and open foredeck, and raked-back superstructure. It’s just bigger in every way.”

Like every sportfishing boat, the focus is the cockpit, with a fighting chair in the center and multiple rocket launchers. The decks above are for ringside views of the action.  Courtesy Vripack

Bouwhuis is quick to point out “this is a sportfisher first, and superyacht second. While she will have the luxury of a true superyacht, she’ll set a new benchmark in the world of big-game fishing boats.”

Renderings from Vripack show a towering, six-deck fishing machine with the sleek proportions of smaller battlewagons from American builders like Viking, Hatteras and Jarrett Bay.

To shave weight, the hull and superstructure will be made of Alustar aluminum, a super-strong, high-tensile alloy. Bouwhuis won’t reveal the yacht’s power, though the word “huge” comes out in the conversation. “You can’t fool nature if you want a 171-foot boat to go this fast,” he says. “It will have significant horsepower.”

Designer Vripack kept the proportions similar to traditional American sportfishing designs, though those smaller battlewagons don’t have six decks.  Courtesy Vripack

The yacht has been commissioned by an experienced owner who is passionate about big-game fishing. “There are yachts out there that label themselves ‘sportfishermen,’ but they tend to be big motoryachts with a small fishing cockpit on back. Project 406 stays true to the traditional proportions.”

That means an oversized stern cockpit that’s low to the water, with a classic varnished-wood fighting chair takes center stage. Each of the decks above it will face the stern to give guests a front-row view of the sportfishing action below. For thrill-seekers, the very top deck, high above the flybridge hardtop, will provide stunning 360-degree views of the water. Perfect for spotting leaping marlin.

When the fish aren’t biting, Project 406 will offer guests plenty of places to kick back and relax. On the bow is an expansive, sunken sun-lounging area with oversize pads and sofas. The yacht’s fourth-level sky lounge will serve as an extraordinary “theater” for watching big-game fish leap out of the water. At night, it will have the relaxed ambience and stunning views of a boutique hotel penthouse.

When not in sportfishing mode, the outer decks can be used for socializing, especially the open area in the bow.  Courtesy Vripack

“It has been a steep learning curve for the whole Vripack team, discovering what makes a great sportfishing boat and understanding what kind of features are needed—from the rods, to the baitwells, the icemakers and fish boxes,” says Bouwhuis. “But it has definitely been an exciting challenge.”

It’s hard to understand the unbridled passion for fishing, especially when discussing the world’s largest sportfishing boat.  But actor Lee Marvin summed up the feeling nicely: “I only make movies to finance my fishing.”

Most are equipped with tournament fishing options such as tuna towers, kill boxes, large tackling stations, ice makers, and live bait wells. Here are 10 of the biggest sportfish yachts ever built. These fishing boats are very impressive.

2. 138’ McMullen & Wing 2003 | MEA CULPA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

When Jack Sarin was tasked with designing MEA CULPA, he was given the challenge of designing a boat that could fish in the most remote corners of the world but hold her own in the stylish ports of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean . With no expense spared in terms of quality and comfort and decked out with an impressive array of fishing equipment, she manages to achieve both and has fished and cruised all over the world.

Hatteras Yachts

Located in New Bern, North Carolina, Hatteras Yachts manufactures luxury production and semi-custom sportfishing yachts and motor yachts up to 30.48 metres in length.

History of Hatteras Yachts

Hatteras Yachts is a pioneer in the manufacture of luxury yachts built of GRP. The company got its start in 1959, when wooden boat construction was still the norm, after textile manufacturer Willis Slane and a group of investors hired naval architect Jack Hargrave to design a yacht that could stand up to the challenging conditions of the waters off North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras. The Hatteras 41 Convertible Yacht Fisherman Knit Wits was the first production yacht of its size to be built of fiberglass.

The success of Knit Wits enabled Hatteras Yachts to develop a series of production Convertibles – sportfishing yachts that are equally capable of competing in fishing tournaments and carrying owners in comfort on offshore voyages. Hatteras also launched a series of semi-custom luxury motor yachts that placed a focus more on cruising than on sportfishing.

Ownership of Hatteras Yachts has changed ownership several times, most recently in 2013 when an affiliate of Versal Capital Management, LLC, acquired the company, along with CABO Yachts, from the Brunswick Corporation.

Notable Hatteras Yachts

In 2013, Hatteras Yachts launched its flagship, the first hull in the shipyard’s 100 Raised Pilothouse Series, the 31-metre Mr. Loui . Designed by Hatteras’ in-house team in collaboration with T4Design by Enrico Gobbi, the Hatteras 100 RP has bold exterior styling, accommodations for eight guests in four staterooms, and a maximum speed of 25 knots.

History of Hatteras Yachts

Almost 60 years ago, Hatteras Yachts founder Willis Slane set out to build a more durable sportfishing boat that could tame the waters off of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. What he didn’t know at the time is that his idea would spark a legendary yacht brand that would become synonymous with the world of offshore sportfishing, particularly among die-hard Billfish tournament captains.   The waters off of Cape Hatteras are influenced by the Gulf Stream and while this does bring with it a variety of popular gamefish like Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Tuna, it also can turn into a rough ride when wind and waves pick up. Slane’s first 40-foot fiberglass yacht, the Knit Wits, revolutionized the industry as we know it today with its strength and remarkable attention to detail. Hatteras Yachts are known for over-engineering every detail on their yachts, taking a que from the brand’s originator Willis Slane, which has resulted in a line of sportfishing yachts and luxury motor yachts, known for their innovation and quality craftsmanship.

It’s that innovation that has kept Hatteras building boats every day through the highs and lows of the economy, which gives our yacht owners the peace of mind that the team at Hatteras will continue to support them with warranty, service, re-sale value, and exciting new product to further their boating experience beyond all expectations. From hull design to propulsion choices to interactive on-board connectivity, this commitment to innovation is what secures the lasting legacy of Hatteras Yachts.

Brunswick sold Hatteras Yachts in 2013 to Versa Capital Management, LLC, an investment firm with a large portfolio of companies that includes Black Angus Steakhouses, Silver Airways, Polartec, and a variety of other companies in multiple industries. As part of this sale, Versa also retained the rights to Cabo Yachts as well. Today, both brands are thriving as Hatteras continues to debut new models like the GT59 and the GT65 Carolina , which are back on the tournament circuit and winning awards. The Hatteras factory also debuted the new Cabo 41 Express at recent boat shows.

Where Are Hatteras Boats And Yachts Made?

The Hatteras factory is located in New Bern, North Carolina at 110 N Glenburie Road, which is located in between Wilmington, NC and Virginia Beach, VA. The factory sits on the Neuse River which is only a few minutes drive by boat to the Atlantic Ocean. The environment in the Atlantic Ocean can be rough at times which influenced the Hatteras "Carolina-Flare" hull design as well as the need to use a solid fiberglass resin-infused hull for extra strength and stiffness. Today, the Hatteras factory is thriving and employs hundreds of craftsmen and workers, contributing to the local economy.

United's Relationship With Hatteras

Whether you are charging 4-foot seas to the canyons or comfortably cruising the coast to Florida for the winter, it’s the behind-the-scenes details that make a Hatteras special. The patented air induction system reduces noise and vibration by over 200% while the resin-infusion process during the construction process provides for stronger and lighter decks, bulkheads, and other parts of the yacht. Even the in-house designed multi-bladed hybrid propellers offer advantages including improved fuel economy and a quieter ride. These details can only truly be appreciated by a trip to the Hatteras factory in New Bern, North Carolina.

United Yacht Sales – New Jersey Division – is proud to be the exclusive dealer for Hatteras Sportfish and Motor Yachts in the Cape May area.   Not only can our expert staff guide you through the new boat build and purchase process, but our industry-leading brokerage team can help with the re-sale of your used Hatteras Yacht. Scott White is the Hatteras and Cabo brand manager for United and recently sold hull #3 of the new GT59. If you're considering purchasing a new Hatteras or Cabo, give Scott a call today at (609) 780-0309. We have plenty of resources to help you through the process of buying a new Hatteras Yacht .

Who is the CEO of Hatteras Yachts?

In January 2017, Kelly Grindle took over as Chief Executive Officer of Hatteras Yachts and Cabo Yachts. Grindle's experience prior to Hatteras includes President of Outdoor Products at Vista Outdoor in Overland Park, Kansas. Vista Outdoor is a $2.3 billion designer, manufacturer, and marketer of consumer products in the outdoor sports and recreation market. Grindle received a degree in Finance from Indiana University - Kelley School of Business. Chairman of Hatteras and the CEO of Versa Capital Management had this to say about Kelly Grindle coming to Hatteras, "We are pleased to have recruited a senior executive with the industry knowledge and experience to lead Hatteras Yachts through its next phase of growth. Kelly Grindle is an acknowledged leader in the outdoor sports and recreational marine industries, and will have a positive impact on our ability to deliver the best quality yachts to Hatteras customers today, and to continue the company's long tradition of pioneering innovative design and technology in the future."

The new M90 Panacera Motor Yacht

Hatteras recently launched the new M90 Panacera in 2017 to rave reviews from brand enthusiasts, magazine editors, and other motor yacht owners. Hatteras CEO Kelley Grindle gushed over the “outstanding panoramic views as well as the ease of flow between social spaces.” If the new M90 was built for anything, it was for entertaining family or friends comfortably at sea. The main deck floorplan is completely unobstructed with lots of natural light giving you an openness that is unmatched in its class. The Flybridge is wide-open and allows plenty of room for sunbathing, grilling, and enjoying your company. The 22-foot 6-inch beam creates a broad sense of space and open areas, particularly in the salon and master stateroom which is full beam that has a king-size berth. The M90 has three other staterooms, each with en suite heads, along with crew quarters access via the transom that also has separate crew heads and galley.

M60 Motor Yacht

While the Hatteras M60 may be the smallest of the motor yacht series, the Hatteras team has done an exceptional job utilizing the 18' 2" beam and the space it creates. Small enough to be operated without a captain and crew, the M60 is a great option for the experienced motor yacht owner who wants an interior known to be one of the largest in its class. The full beam master suite is comfortable and features enough storage and hanging closet space for the M60 to be a true long distance cruising yacht should the opportunity arise. From the aft cockpit seating area to the country-style kitchen, the Hatteras M60 is a perfect yacht for entertaining no matter what the season.

Hatteras GT70 Convertible

With the Hatteras Yachts brand being synonymous with durable, tournament-tested sportfishing yachts, it’s no surprise that the builder’s flagship boat is a 70-foot convertible. The 68GT, the previous flagship model, was built and delivered 51 times before the new GT70 was born. Everything about this vessel screams multi-day fishing excursion to the Canyons. From the oversized fighting cockpit to the larger engines with added fuel capacity of 2,140 gallons to the 5-stateroom layout, the GT70 has everything you need in a convertible sportfish to hunt big game. Despite her big 21-foot 4-inch beam, the Hatteras GT70 can easily break the 40-knot barrier when powered with the twin MTU 2600-HP diesel engines.   And with a gourmet galley and spacious salon, your guests on board that aren’t strapped into the fighting chair or behind the helm can relax inside without being tossed around. The Hatteras GT70 is truly a prime example of the legendary quality and performance that the Hatteras factory is known to produce.

Hatteras GT59 Convertible

With speeds breaking the 40-knot threshold and every feature designed for the passionate angler, the new Hatteras GT59 is already making waves on the Billfish tournament circuit. Twin CAT C-32A 1600HP diesel engines are the standard power choice and with the patented Hatteras hull design and construction, she performs outstandingly well. Owners enjoy the popular 3-stateroom, 2-head layout that allows an owner to enjoy cruising with his family or taking the team offshore for several days to hunt big game.

Featured Hatteras/Cabo Express Boat Models

Hatteras GT45x Flybridge

When Hatteras Yachts absorbed the iconic Cabo Yachts brand, it was only a matter of time before the models would begin to integrate the best of both brands into a new style of sportfish. Hatteras did not disappoint the market by launching three versions of its GT45X including an express cruiser, an express sportfish version with flybridge, and a Sport Tower option as well. All models come standard with the popular twin Cat C-12A Diesel engines and either a one or two stateroom layout.   TheGT45x Flybridge version has top speeds in the mid-40’s and comes entirely rigged for any tournament featuring a state-of-the-art helm station with a full tower and plenty of easily accessible storage for tackle. You can even enjoy cooking your catch within minutes of it being in the water with the electric grill built in to the starboard bait and tackle center.   If you’re looking for a durable sportfish in the Cape May area, there is no better option than a new Hatteras GT45x with the expert guidance of United Yacht Sales.

Cabo Yachts 41 Express

The reception of the Cabo 41 Express has been more than welcoming after it made its debut at the recent Atlanta Boat Show and Miami International Boat Show. Anglers have been anticipating the return of the iconic Cabo brand for some time and several hulls of the 41 Express have already been sold. Standard power is twin Volvo D11 625HP engines and the fighting cockpit is loaded with fishing features like in-deck fish boxes and in-transom baitwell. The Cabo 41 even has mezzanine seating for guests who want to watch the action unfold.

What does Hatteras do differently with its hulls?

If a trip to the Hatteras factory is in your plans, make sure to ask to see the log test. Hatteras loves to show off how strong their full fiberglass hulls are and have developed a way to simulate potential damage to the hull of a Hatteras should it hit a log at 20 knots . While Hatteras Yachts may be heavier than their competition, they are also stronger and more durable. The hulls are built using the highest quality fiberglass possible combined with vinylester resin which has optimal strength, stiffness, and impact resistant qualities.

During the construction process, Hatteras also adds a coat of high-performance vinylester gelcoat to the entire hull that's below the waterline. This extra layer helps protect the hull against bottom blisters which is an extra step that many competitive boat builders simply don't take. Finally, the bottom of the hull gets an additional cost of epoxy resin as part of the anti-fouling system and for an added layer of protection.

Does Hatteras "vacuum-bag" their hulls like other yacht manufacturers?

The term vacuum-bagging is widely used in the marine industry with many builders vacuum-bagging the entire hull so it can be infused with varying qualities of resin. At Hatteras, there is a proprietary vinylester resin infusion technology that literally pulls the resin through the fiberglass instead of saturating it. The result is a hull that is lighter and stronger than if it had been fully bagged and infused.

Bob Arthur has been on the Hatteras team for over 40 years and has seen the entire evolution of the brand and all of its models.. His current title is Hatteras Manager of Structural and Composites Engineering. “We would rather do infusion and get the cleaner, clearer hull surface it produces than to use vacuum-bagging,” said Bob Arthur. “The infusion allows us to really dial in our resin-to-glass ratio for stiffness and strength. What a lot of people don’t know is that back in the ’80s, Hatteras actually helped to develop the very first vinylester gel coat for use in composite construction." It's team members like Bob who live and breathe the Hatteras product and their devotion to it, that makes it a very special boat.

Hatteras has never been one to shy away from trying something new. The Hatteras GT65 Carolina will utilize a new hull and tunnel design. The team utilized a high-tech CFD Analysis (CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics) to make sure they got the hull shape perfect for maneuverability and performance. Additionally, Hatteras will infuse the stringer system to the hull to make one single, solid part. Not only will this reduce weight and increase the hull strength, but it will also be the first in the marine industry.

What is the Hatteras System called Hatt/Con?

Hatt/Con is what the Hatteras team is calling their new innovation in total ship management. Hatt/Con was instituted on Hatteras models to offer owners and captains an easier way to control the yacht's navigation and other operating systems on board right from an easy-to-read dashboard. The consolidation of all of these functions into the Hatt/Con system means that the helm station is no longer populated with multiple modules and inconsistent operating systems.

Hatt/Con allows the captain to operate systems on board such as lighting in various rooms, stream video, HVAC temperature regulation, and control all of the ships systems. Gauges for fuel tanks, fresh water, and grey/black water holding tanks are also featured. The Hatt/Con dashboard and ship management system can be downloaded right to your iPhone or iPad as an "app".

What kind of engines do Hatteras use in their yachts?

While Hatteras models on the brokerage market can vary depending on how far back you go, today's Hatteras Yachts are outfitted with Caterpillar marine engines. "CAT Marine Engines really do set the standard when it comes to performance and engine reliability," said Scott White, United Hatteras Brand Manager. "Caterpillar continues to innovate their products and the customer support that owners get is just incredible."

The Hatteras M90, for example, is equipped with twin CAT C-32A diesel engines. The C-32A are one of the most popular engine models that boat builders are using today. The M90 C-32A's are 1,622HP each pushing it to a top speed of 21 to 23 knots while cruising comfortably at 17 to 19 knots. The Hatteras M60 drops down to the C-18A 1,000HP engines, but owners can upgrade to the 1,136HP models.

On the Sportfish side where speed is everything, Hatteras chose to put the C-32A 1,622HP diesels in the new GT59. With that much power in a sub-60 foot boat, the GT59 can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots. The C-32A is also used in the flagship model of the GT-series, the GT70, except in the 1800HP versions. GT70 owners can cruise easily in the mid-30 knot range and top out above 40 knots.

What is the Hatteras boat called The Knit Wits?

The Knits Wits has become a bit of an icon for Hatteras Yachts and represents the very first Hatteras boat ever built. The 41-foot white and teal flybridge was fully restored at the Hatteras factory back in 2013 and has done several tours at major boat shows and events. The Knit Wits was originally launched in 1960 by Hatteras founder Willis Slane who was frustrated by the rough sea conditions. Slane then went on to hire Jack Hargrave to design the sportfish.

The success of The Knit Wits is often credited with shifting the industry from wood to fiberglass made boats as many boats at that time couldn't withstand the same conditions as the Knit Wits proved to do. The Knit Wits is now a piece of boating industry and Hatteras history as she spends her days in retirement on display at the Hatteras Yachts Sales Center in Fort Lauderdale.

What is the biggest yacht Hatteras makes?

The Hatteras 105 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht is currently the largest yacht that is offered in the Hatteras model line. The design for the Hatteras 105RPH was launched in May 2018 and was lauded as the largest resin-infused hull to date. This news came after the Hatteras 100 Motor Yacht was launched back in 2014. Perfect for entertaining large groups of people, there is a large great room that is located on the main deck of the yacht that is reminiscent of a ballroom. Owners even have the option to choose two distinctive layouts including either a luxurious master stateroom on the main deck or a very large galley if the purpose of the vessel is more for entertaining than long-distance cruising.

What's the best place to see a Hatteras Yacht?

Boat Shows are undoubtedly the best venue to climb on board and compare any of the Hatteras models. The three biggest boat shows for Hatteras and Cabo are the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in November, the Miami Yacht Show in February, and the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March. The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is generally the largest of the three shows and where Hatteras brings their full line-up. Whether you are considering a motor yacht or a sportfish, Hatteras will have a mixture of both types of yachts at each of these boat shows. It is also a great opportunity to meet with factory representatives who can answer specific questions about each model. Engine manufacturers are also sometimes in attendance as well to answer engine-specific questions about performance and after-sale service.

Can a new Hatteras Yacht be deducted as a business expense?

While United Yacht Sales does not offer any financial or legal advice, there were changes to the tax laws that allow owners to deduct the full expense of their Hatteras Yacht. While there are several stipulations, the yacht you purchase must be used for a business such as yacht charter or fishing charters. Even new equipment such as electronics can be fully deducted as long as they are added to the yacht in the same year as it was purchased. This new law covers the purchase of both new and used yachts for sale . We recommend that you consult with your certified accountant or lawyer regarding the new tax laws and if your Hatteras or Cabo Yacht purchase could indeed be written off.

Boat Review: Hatteras 90′

  • Updated: October 12, 2001

Used to be that no matter where you happened to be fishing, the Hatteras 65 enclosed flybridge convertible stood a pretty good chance of being the largest sport-fisher in the fleet. No more. Anglers looking for long-range ability and fine cruising appointments are rapidly extending what used to be the parameters of a realistic sport-fishing boat.

At May’s Bertram/Hatteras Shootout in Boat Harbour, Bahamas, the Hatteras 65 was dwarfed by its new big sister, a 90-footer aptly named Bodacious. The second hull in this new custom series, the Bodacious is an awesome sight – a triple-deck monster that somehow still maintains the classic lines of a true sport-fisherman. Indeed, unlike the “yacht fisher” that you typically find in this size range, the Bodacious was built for one sole purpose: to fish. Her owner, Pat Thomas, who recently sold his stake in First Financial Management Corporation to the tune of $7.2 billion, simply prefers doing things in a more dramatic fashion than the typical guy.

A previous owner of a Hatteras 65 himself, Thomas appreciated the classic lines of this trend-setting boat and simply applied those lines to the already proven Hatteras 82. The additional 8 feet did more, though, than simply stretch the cockpit. The extra footage enlarges the master stateroom and the pilothouse, and allows for the addition of a large observation deck between the salon and cockpit – a nice feature for guests who want to watch the fishing action without getting in the way.

Though the average Joe Boater certainly couldn’t handle the $4.9 million price tag of this beast, anyone who loves fishing boats would appreciate the many fine touches Hatteras included in the project. Down below, she features a full-beam, midship master stateroom. Granite countertops and marble flooring are utilized throughout the galley. With plenty of room thanks to a beam of 21 feet 5 inches, the mahogany and leather interior offers grand luxury, including a spiral staircase leading to the enclosed flybridge. A beautifully decorated compartment, the flybridge includes frameless windows, a day head, two commanding adjustable helm chairs, and an electronics suite worthy of such a transoceanic yacht. With a fuel capacity of just a sip under 5,000 gallons, the Bodacious is exactly that when run at 12-knot displacement speeds. Even at a cruise speed of 24 knots, she offers a range of 700 nautical miles. Bump her up to 1,925 rpm and the big Cats will push her 243,000 pounds to a top speed of 27 knots, at which point she drinks 211 gallons per hour.

Her 200-square-foot cockpit features one of the largest tackle cabinets and preparation areas ever offered, and the equipment list leaves nothing to be desired. Her skipper, John Jamison, claims he can maneuver as effectively on billfish as he could on Thomas’ previous 65-footer.

The Bodacious certainly lives up to her name – an amalgam of bold and audacious. But her size and style aside, she’s still a sport-fisherman at heart.

13 Best Sport Fishing Yachts of 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • August 30, 2023

It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for mahi-mahi off the beach in South Florida or campaigning a pro-level crew from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back pursuing billfish during tournament season. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling, and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits fresh; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch stowed and cold; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, sometimes north of 40-plus knots. Sportfish yachts are also known for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and en suite staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina falls in the middle of the New Bern, North Carolina, boatbuilder’s three-model GT lineup, which also includes a GT59 and GT70 . This sportfish yacht has a solid-fiberglass hull bottom built for blue-water duty and comes with a variety of diesel engine options, which starts with twin 1,622 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels.

Like all Hatteras GT models, the GT65 has notable bow flare to beat back tempestuous seas as well as a high freeboard to keep decks dry in the slop. The Hatteras GT65 also represent a design evolution for the series with a “stepped-back flybridge” an element found on in earlier Hatteras models, as well as a new window treatment and hull-side vents. With yacht-level luxury on the inside and a fishing-mission design on the outside, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 is a formidable sportfish boat.

Quick Specifications

Viking yachts 64c.

With its 180-square-foot, dance-floor-size, teak cockpit, options for a fighting chair or rocket launcher, a mezzanine perched perfectly for spotting prey in the spread and enough livewell space to keep a gaggle of goggle-eye baits frisky, the 42-knot Viking Yachts 64C is built for battle with big fish. Its impressive speed, which comes via optional 2,022 hp MTU M96X V-12 diesels , ensures that the Viking 64C is likely to be first boat with lines in the water. Cruise speed: 36 knots at 80 percent engine load. (Base powerplants are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels.) For the traveling tournament crew, the Viking 64C has four staterooms, including three en suite guest staterooms, plus a crew cabin with upper and lower bunks.

Royal Huisman Project 406

A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck, Royal Huisman’s Project 406 is. The interior and exterior design of Project 406 is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack . Vripack calls the vessel a “sportfisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight.

Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines for Project 406. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.

Royal Huisman Project 406

Rybovich 94

Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat , designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels .

The owner of II Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside.  “Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.”

Rybovich 94

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

The Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish is the builder’s entry point to its diesel-propelled sportfish boats. An owner-operator-size angling platform, the 38 Open is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, which gives the sportfish boat 36-knot speed. Notable angling features on board the 38 Open include a 109-swqure-foot cockpit, complete with a mezzanine seating flanking the centerline stairs to the bridge deck as well as a laminated backing plate foe either a fighting chair or a rocket launcher. For overnight canyon trips, there is a forepeak stateroom with a double bunk as well as a single above it. Additionally, the salon’s sofa converts to a berth for guests or crew. The galley is outfitted with Corian countertops, two-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven and drawer-style refrigerators and freezers. Some options include a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics , both are Viking Yachts’ subsidiaries.

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

Bertram 61 Convertible

Bertram’s 61 Convertible leads the builder’s offshore series, which also includes a 35 Convertible and the express-style 50 Sport . Like its 50 Sport sistership, the 61 Convertible has a stepped sheerline, a nod to the legendary boatbuilder’s earlier designs. It also creates an instantly recognizable profile. The 61 Convertible is ready to run out of the box thanks to its twin 1,925 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels. Top hop is 44 knots.

When it comes to chasing fish, the 61 Convertible has 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell is accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard makes bringing in that bigeye on board a breeze. (Fish not included.) The accommodations layout belowdecks includes three staterooms. There is a full-beam master stateroom amidships.

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

The Hatteras Yachts GT45X express sports twin 1,150-horsepower Cat C18 ACERT diesel engines that deliver 40-plus-knot speeds. During our sea trial, the GT45X showcased remarkable handling, gracefully leaning into turns without any loss of power from the props. Hatteras has equipped the GT45X with a custom-engineered, sound-deadening system. This feature reduces noise and vibration, ensuring a relatively quiet ride for all aboard. Inside, the yacht has a luxe sensibility with its wood sole, sumptuous leather seating, a fully equipped galley and a spacious forward stateroom. On deck, there are two comfortable helm seats, an undercounter fridge, an ice maker, an inviting L-shaped settee and a table, creating the perfect entertainment area for relaxing after a successful day of fishing. The integrated hardtop enhances visibility with its one-piece windshield and large side windows, offering optimal views of the surrounding waters. To adapt to changing weather conditions, simply install clear curtains across the bridge deck aft, transforming the GT45X into an all-season sport-fisherman. Personalization is key with Hatteras Yachts, and the GT45X offers a variety of optional features. From a bow thruster and additional stateroom to teak accents and a flybridge option, you can customize your yacht to meet your specific needs. With a simple ala carte ordering process, just select your must-have options, start the engines and have your next angling adventure.

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

The Huckins 45 Sportfisherman starts with the Florida boatbuilder’s patented Quadraconic hull . The Huckins’ Quadraconic name derives from four conical projections that make up the bottom surface shape. The sport-fisher has a deep forefoot and some measurable flare above the waterline for good buoyancy and dry running. A single chine rises from the waterline and then descends quickly to optimize spray control. The deep-V shape forward warps to a flat running surface far aft for efficient planing and excellent roll resistance.

Power is twin 480 hp Cummins diesels, which give this sportfish boat an easy 28-knot cruise. Top speed is 35 knots, so a 30-knot cruise is easily an option. The owner of the 45 Sportfisherman we got aboard is an avid stand-up angler and set up his boat with three flush-deck insulated fish boxes with macerators, a Dometic ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, six gunwale rod holders, saltwater and freshwater washdowns, and a four-rod rocket launcher in lieu of a fighting chair.

Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

Jarrett Bay 46

Originally named Persistence, this Jarrett Bay 46 was built for fishing enthusiast and NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. When creating his fully custom sportfish boat, Burton noted that his vessel would be both a fishing boat and a family boat. Fishing features include an in-transom fish box, a sailfish pod, insulated fish boxes and a tuna door (sans bridge) in the cockpit. Jarrett Bay installed three rod holders in each gunwale and six more across the flybridge rail, plenty of rod room for setting up a trolling spread. With upper and lower helm stations (the latter being an owner request), the Jarrett Bay 46 also gives the skipper options if the weather goes south. The Jarrett Bay 46 has ZF pod drives with underwater exhaust paired to twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels. At a comfortable 2,000-rpm cruise, this sport-fisher makes about 26 knots while those diesels consume 41 gallons per hour. Dial it up to a top-end speed of 35 knots and consumption goes up to 58.3 gph.

Jarrett Bay 46

Viking Yachts 92

The Viking Yachts 92 is the largest sport-fisher the New Gretna, New Jersey-based boatbuilder has ever constructed. Offered with an open- or enclosed-bridge setup, the hefty sportfish boat (displacing around 205,000 pounds) hits 37-knots-plus when powered with optional 2,600 hp MTU diesels. At 2,100 rpm, this battlewagon cruises easily at 31 knots at 78 percent engine load. Dial it back to 28 knots, and engine load is a mere 70 percent. The 92-footer is also agile thanks to the Viking Independent Programmable Electrohydraulic Rudder (VIPER) steering system, a fly-by-wire setup that lets the helmsman control each rudder individually.

From an angling perspective, the 92 has 55-foot Rupp outriggers , fish stowage large enough for a wolf pack of bigeye tuna, space for a season’s worth of baits, secured gaff stowage and enough tackle drawers to handle all the lures and terminal gear an owner could ever buy. The Viking 92 also has six staterooms to accommodate owners, guests and crew for tournament season and long-haul adventure angling.

Viking Yachts 92

Like some of the other names on this list, Merritt is an iconic Pompano Beach, Florida-based, custom sportfish builder with a current model lineup that includes 66-, 72- and 86-foot convertible designs. The Merritt 72 is a model that has stood the test of time, and one that owners flock to year in and year out, for its fishability, seakindly nature and the ability to tailor the layout to an owner’s angling needs.

Because these boats are custom-built, the specifics can change from one 72 to another, but 30-knot cruise speeds and nearly 40-knot top-end speeds are common in all 72s, as are massive cockpits for fighting Hemingway-worthy marlin, stout construction for chasing those fish in the blue water and superyacht-level finishes inside and outside.

Merritt 72

The entry point into Bertram’s three-model Offshore Series⎯spanning from 35 to 61 feet length overall⎯the Bertram 35 blends a familiar profile with modern power and technology to create a 36-knot angling juggernaut. This owner-operator-sized, Michael Peters -penned, flybridge sport-fisher starts with a wave-slicing, deep-V hull form with 22 degrees transom deadrise. The form is supported by a solid fiberglass hull bottom with cored hull sides for added strength without added weight.

The 35 has a 126-square-foot cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic. Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look. Inside, the salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. Power is twin 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels matched to ZF drives. At a comfortable 27.5-knot cruise at just 68 percent engine load, the Bertram 35 has a 253-nautical-mile range, making it easily canyon-capable.

Bertram 35

Viking Yachts 54 Open

Many anglers like open- or express-style sportfish designs as they enable the captain and crew to keep in close proximity, and the Viking 54 Open , which also is offered in a Sport Coupe or Sport Tower, does just that. The 54 Open’s bridge deck has a Palm Beach-style helm on centerline, flanked by a double-wide companion seat to port and a single seat to starboard. Abaft the helm and to port is U-shaped seating with a walnut table, creating a respite from the sun on tournament day while still allowing the crew to keep an eye on the spread via the open after bulkhead. Across from that seating is an L-shaped settee.

With a focus on fishing, the 54 Open has 154 square feet of cockpit real estate. Two sets of mezzanine seats offer perches for the crew to watch the spread. Other fishing-friendly features include a transom livewell, an in-deck fish box to starboard (with an optional livewell tub), an insulated in-deck box to port, a deck plate for mounting a rocket launcher or fighting chair, cooler stowage in the mezzanine steps (a bait freezer in the steps is optional), and a tuna door. Power is either twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN diesels. For owners who prefer a three-sided fiberglass enclosure to a clear-plastic setup—but still want an open after bulkhead—Viking offers the 54 in the Sport Tower version. The 54 Sport Coupe model closes the after bulkhead, completely protecting the bridge deck from the elements.

White River Marine Group Acquires Legendary Boat Builder Hatteras

Company announces expansion of Hatteras with iconic MAKO and Ranger Saltwater boat brands to relocate to modernized state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center

largest hatteras yacht

Passion for fishing drives vision to establish New Bern, N.C. as “the saltwater sportfishing boat building capital of the world.”

NEW BERN, NC – Noted angler and conservationist Johnny Morris, who founded and grew both Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group to become North America’s premier outdoor and conservation company, today announced plans for a significant expansion of its saltwater manufacturing footprint with the acquisition of Hatteras Inc. The legendary maker of saltwater fishing boats is based in New Bern, North Carolina, a premier location for saltwater fishing.

largest hatteras yacht

Hatteras leapt to the forefront of the sportfishing industry more than 60 years ago, with ruggedly built saltwater boats that earned a reputation for high-performance. Just how impactful is the influence of Hatteras Yachts on the offshore boating landscape? Transformational. When Willis Slane, Hatteras’ founder, built the 41’ Knit Wits in 1959, it was the world’s first fiberglass boat over 40-feet in length.

From the groundbreaking hull number one, Hatteras has earned a reputation for industry-leading performance, innovation and seaworthiness. Engineered to stand up to the unforgiving conditions of North Carolina, Hatteras Yachts can be found all over the world. The brand’s trademark lies not only in technical innovation, but in the effortless blending of luxury with performance.

Today, it continues to build exceptional yachts and quality sportfishing boats. The White River Marine Group provides an incredible platform to usher in the next era of the historic brand.

The brand will become part of the White River Marine Group, the world’s largest boat manufacturer. The family of brands includes TRACKER BOATS, the No. 1 fishing boat in America for the past 45 years; ASCEND, the world’s best-selling kayaks; and other leading brands including MAKO, Ranger, Triton, Tahoe, Nitro and others.

The addition will shift the focus of the company’s saltwater manufacturing from the Midwest to the Atlantic seashore, closer to the saltwater market and a thriving community of craftsmen and women. The company will continue to support and grow Hatteras, as well as relocate production of iconic saltwater boat brands MAKO and Ranger Saltwater to New Bern, which is poised to become the new world capital for offshore angling and boating.

While White River plans to continue to produce a limited number of exceptional Hatteras yachts, the primary focus will be devoted to building the next generation of the very finest sportfishing boats ever made. Uniting the Bass Pro Shops family of brands with Hatteras Yachts promises good things for the offshore sportfishing industry.

Bass Pro Shops has long been a leader in conservation across North America. The company’s heritage is defined by not simply supporting conservation, but actively driving it.

Plans call for a major investment to modernize the Hatteras facility and establish a state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center generating hundreds of new jobs. Consistent with Bass Pro’s reputation for turning shopping for outdoor gear into an experiential adventure, the plant will offer customers demo rides on the Atlantic Ocean and opportunities to tour the factory. It will also serve as an R&D center for sea-trialing and product development across all three brands.

The move frees up capacity at existing manufacturing plants in Miami, Oklahoma and Flippin, Arkansas for additional freshwater boat production, with zero job losses anticipated.

Driven by passion for fishing

Boating and fishing have been at the heart of Bass Pro Shops since its founding in 1972, when avid young angler Johnny Morris started selling bait and tackle in 8 square feet in the back of his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri.

Six years later, Morris revolutionized the marine industry when he introduced the world’s first “fish ready” professionally rigged and nationally marketed boat, motor and trailer package, the Bass Tracker. For the first time, fishermen could buy quality fishing boats “factory direct” at tremendous savings, allowing thousands of families to access the water for the first time. In Hatteras, Morris identified the same qualities responsible for Bass Pro’s growth and success – pride, quality and craftsmanship.

“We are inspired by the many similarities between the pride and passion of the master boat builders from our home in the Ozarks and the legendary boat builders of North Carolina and the New Bern area in particular. Both share the same genuine commitment to American craftsmanship, with scores of family members working together and generations of highly experienced boat builders taking pride in what they do,” said Johnny. “We’re committed to support Hatteras in staying true to its roots as a legendary saltwater brand built by a passion for fishing while expanding our operations to better serve all those who love the sea.”

Passion for offshore angling

Morris himself has long been familiar with Hatteras and offshore angling off the coast of North Carolina. On March 3, 1995, while fishing sunken World War II ships 25 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras not far from New Bern, Morris caught and released what was, at the time, a single day record 31 giant bluefin tuna, estimated to weigh more than 12,000 pounds, on rod and reel.

Committed to Conservation

To honor the legacy of dear friend and North Carolina conservation hero Eddie Bridges, Johnny Morris also announced a $1 million conservation pledge focused on the coastal area, to be paid over 5 years .

Mr. Bridges, who was scheduled to attend today’s announcement ceremonies, passed away earlier this week. Eddie leaves behind a lasting impact in North Carolina, having established the North Carolina Wildlife Endowment Fund and not-for-profit North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Foundation.

The pledge awards several significant grants to conservation organizations actively working to advance wildlife and habitat conservation in North Carolina. The grants are funded in part by the not-for-profit Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, which unites millions of passionate sportsmen and women by inviting them to round up their purchases to join the company’s efforts as partners in conservation.

First year commitments include:

  • $100,000 to the North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Foundation : As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the Foundation assists in the acquisition, management and protection of wildlife habitat within the state of North Carolina and promote conservation education for the benefit of future generations.
  • $50,000 to the University of Maine for a North Carolina-based Atlantic bluefin tuna satellite tagging project . One of the most sought-after gamefish in the world, the research project will assess the status of the Atlantic bluefin tuna population and set management and conservation goals to ensure the long-term sustainability of the species.
  • $50,000 to the International Game Fish Association for a rigorous Marlin satellite tagging project . As the world’s largest citizen science billfish conservation project of its kind, the research is designed to better understand population connectivity on a global level to help ensure long-term conservation.

Committed to Conserving Marine Fisheries: The grants reflect Johnny’s steadfast commitment to positively impact marine fisheries. He previously co-chaired the Morris-Deal Commission on Saltwater Recreational Fisheries Management, leading to the congressional reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in June 2015, advancing key saltwater recreational fishing priorities across the nation’s marine fisheries.

Several prominent conservation leaders from around the state and nation were on-hand to participate in the announcement including:

  • Jeff Angers, President, Center for Sportfishing Policy
  • Jason Schratwieser, President, International Game Fish Association
  • Ellen Peel, President, Billfish Foundation
  • Kyle Briggs, Deputy Director, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission
  • Teena Koury, Vice Chairman, North Carolina Habitat Foundation
  • Gordon Myers, Retired Director, North Carolina Resources Commission
  • Walt Golet, Ph.D, Professor, University of Maine School of Marine Sciences

“This is not just a business investment for us,” said Morris. “It’s at the heart of who we are. Fishing, boating and conservation have been lifelong shared passions in our company, and we are grateful to our team members and independent dealer network members for their boundless enthusiasm and support. We are honored to be a part of the New Bern community. Our goal is to grow operations in North Carolina and expand upon the legendary foundation of the Hatteras brand and its incredible people.”

Morris added, “We love the passion for fishing and commitment to craftsmanship found in New Bern. We’re very grateful to Governor Cooper and his team, as well as community officials and leaders including Craven County Manager Jack Veit and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Jason Jones for their genuine welcoming spirit and their leadership in supporting our vision to invest in this incredible community.”

Committed to North Carolina : The New Bern facility is an opportunity to strengthen Bass Pro Shops’ 22-year history in the state, which began with the opening of the company’s Outdoor World store in Concord, North Carolina in 1999. A longstanding friendship between Johnny and North Carolina-based racing legend Richard Childress has resulted in a significant partnership promoting iconic outdoor brands to a global audience through major NASCAR sponsorships.

Lauren Good named Director of Saltwater Operations

During today’s ceremonies, White River Marine Group President Scott Ernest announced that Lauren Good, a 12-year veteran of the company, has been appointed to Director of Saltwater Operations and will be overseeing the new Hatteras facility. Lauren started in retail operations and held several leadership roles within the company before transitioning to manufacturing.

“It’s great to see the next chapter open for this important manufacturing site in our region,” said N.C. Representative Steve Tyson. “White River Marine Group is the number one company in their industry, and we welcome the new jobs and investment they’re bringing to New Bern and Craven County.”

Innovators in Boating - Willis Slane & Hatteras Yachts

Willis Slane Hatteras Yachts founder

The pleasure boat industry is chock full of the most interesting of people -- hard working, dedicated individuals and families who have often put their life’s savings and full-time energies to fulfilling their dreams of creating the boats we know and love.

These are their stories.

“A Hatteras Yacht does not aspire to offer a luxury. That is simply where we begin.” This quote is near the top of the Hatteras Yachts website. It is one part of what Hatteras founder Willis Slane, then in his late 30s, had in mind for a boat back in the late 1950s.

Willis was the young heir to a hosiery manufacturing fortune in High Point, North Carolina, some 200 odd miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. There, off the North Carolina coast, was the abundant and famous sportfishing grounds off Cape Hatteras , also known as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic' and the final resting place for thousands of shipwrecks.

Willis and some of his equally monied friends were ardent offshore sportfishermen and members of the Hatteras Marlin Club . The cold southerly flowing Labrador current and the northerly flowing warm Gulfstream converge off the outer islands of Cape Hatteras, resulting in nasty foaming and often monstrously angry seas. These conditions, while great for attracting the big billfish, would often keep Willis, his friends, and their wooden offshore fishing machines unable to venture forth to enjoy their favourite pastime. Willis Slane was determined to change that.

He ventured to Florida to research boatbuilding and the new boatbuilding material fiberglass, which at that point was only being used for boats up to about 30 feet. In pursuing his goal, Slane happened to meet two people who would forever change the future of boatbuilding.

The first he met was Don Mucklow , an early adopter in the use of fiberglass and who had built a large fiberglass runabout that had won the challenging Miami to Nassau offshore boat race. Slane became convinced of the strength and resilience of fiberglass when Mucklow took him out in rough waters off Miami and ran full throttle in terrible conditions. The boat survived the punishment with nary a problem.

Next, he met Jack Hargrave , a young and eager naval architect who grew up in a boating environment in upstate Michigan. Hargrave was a licensed captain by his late teens and had worked for sportfishing boatbuilding guru John Rybovich . In his mid-30's, Hargrave had designed a 90-foot motor yacht for a client that was subsequently built by renowned Burger Yachts .

Willis Slane asked Hargrave to design a boat with a fibreglass hull that could handle the worst of offshore deep water conditions. Slane wanted offshore fishing features that could accommodate four to six fishermen, while also having modern yachting conveniences, overnight accommodations, and luxurious features to appeal to family cruising. Slane called this new configuration a “convertible,” as it could adapt or convert from fishing to cruising and back again. The “convertible” descriptor has been used by the sportfishing fraternity ever since.

Slane next recruited a number of his fishing buddies to invest in a new venture to build the boat. Despite his enthusiasm, most of them thought it wouldn’t work. The boat Hargrave had designed was a 41-foot sportfisherman with a trunk cabin and a flybridge, with a 14-foot beam and powered by twin 275-horsepower automotive Lincoln V-8 gasoline engines with inboard drives.

Knit Wits Hatteras Yachts

With the Hargrave design in hand, Hatteras Yachts pushed on and began building in a defunct automobile dealership in High Point, North Carolina. Don Mucklow would serve as Vice President and General Manager. Mucklow had to train local recruits, mostly from the local textile and furniture building industries, in the art and science of fiberglass construction. What rolled out of the factory doors in spring of 1960 was the largest pleasure boat ever constructed of fiberglass in North America. Slane trucked it the two hundred miles to Morehead City, NC where he and his wife christened it Knit Wits, the first 41 Hatteras Convertible Sport Fisherman.

After it proved in all respects to be what Slane had envisioned, he proceeded to sell many of them, especially after it became the hit of the 1962 New York National Boat Show. The resulting publicity praising the largest fiberglass boat at the event resulted in sales orders pouring in. The production model displayed at the show had a fiberglass hull with a plywood deck and superstructure coated with resin. Both gasoline and diesel power became available.

Later in 1962, the 41 was also offered in Express, Sedan, Sport Fisherman, and Yacht Fisherman models, while a 34 Express, Sedan, and Sport Fisherman was also added. Perhaps the most notable addition to the lineup was the 41 Double Cabin, which was touted as the first ever fiberglass motor yacht and proved to be the start of a lasting legacy of quality, luxuriousness, and sea-kindly Hatteras motor yachts. It was one of 75 Hatteras models to be designed by Jack Hargrave.

New Bern driving boats Hatteras Yachts

By 1965, the Hatteras name and reputation had grown enormously. That year, it added a 34 Double Cabin as well as a 50-footer available in both motor yacht and sport fisherman configurations. Sadly, though, in November of that year at only 44 years of age, Willis Slane died. Before he passed, Slane recruited David Parker, Jr., one of the original investors, to take over control of the company. Parker proceeded to steer Hatteras through the next 20 years of growth and maturity into the revered position in still holds today.

largest hatteras yacht

Needing capital for this growth, in 1968 Parker arranged for Hatteras to be merged with North American Rockwell -- a merger that provided financing for the production of over 12 new models over the next four years. In addition to the existing lineup, the new models included various configurations in 31, 36, 38, and 45 feet, as well as the Hargrave designed iconic 53 Hatteras Motor Yacht. The 53 would solidify Hatteras’ reputation for luxury and quality as one of the finest motoryacht designs ever built.

Since flybridges had to be removed for truck transport of the boats from the Hatteras factory in High Point to the ocean, in 1967 a marina facility in New Bern, NC was purchased. Its function was to facilitate not only the reassembly of the boats but also perform final detailing and water testing. In 1972, Hatteras was sold by North American Rockwell to AMF, a company which had started an accumulation of outdoor recreation-based companies, one of which was Slickcraft Boats and another, Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. By then, Hatteras offered some 20 models of gasoline and diesel-powered boats in various configurations from 31 to 58 feet.

In 1975, another iconic model, the wide beam, low horsepower, semi-displacement, and weighty 58 Hatteras Long Range Cruiser (LRC) was introduced to instant acclaim. Due to its success, by 1981 both 42 and 48 Long Range Cruisers had been added to the model lineup as well as cockpit motor yachts in 48 and 58 feet. The 32 Sport Fisherman was the smallest Hatteras offering that year.

Irwin Jacobs, through his Minstar and Genmar companies, owned several boat manufacturing companies, the most prominent being Wellcraft Marine of Sarasota, Florida. At the time, Wellcraft was one of the largest pleasure boat manufacturers in North America. By all accounts, Jacobs had his eye on Hatteras and wanted to add it to his growing fleet of boat companies. It is said that Jacobs approached AMF to buy Hatteras, and when he was rebuffed, he instead bought AMF in its entirety, kept Hatteras, and then spun off the rest of AMF. By 1986, Hatteras Yachts was part of Irwin Jacob’s expanding Genmar boating empire.

During this period of expansion, Hatteras had moved into larger manufacturing facilities while still staying in High Point. Some minor operations had been moved during AMF years to the New Bern location. The federal luxury tax of 1991 caused massive harm to Hatteras as it did to all manufacturers of large luxury boats. Sales plummeted and hundreds of workers were laid off. By 1990, the Hatteras lineup included 12 models from 38 to 58 feet, of which half were convertibles and all but one was diesel powered.

The luxury tax was repealed in 1993 and by 1997, the boat sizes were increasing yearly and the model lineup included more motor yacht configurations -- a strong reflection of the demands of the marketplace. In that same year, as the larger boats were becoming increasingly more difficult to transport on the roads, Hatteras shut down its High Point facilities and moved all production to its on-water location in New Bern.

A little over one month after the tragic events of 9/11, as the yacht market was softening, Genmar sold Hatteras Yachts to Brunswick Corporation . The rapidly growing conglomerate owned Mercury Marine, Sea Ray Boats, and many other pleasure boating entities. Public disclosures at the time indicated Hatteras annually produced, on average, 5-6 boats per month from its 15 models ranging up to 90 feet. Total annual sales were about one $130 million USD. Brunswick indicated the highly respected Hatteras lineup would fit nicely as the next step up from its Sea Ray brand, not to mention giving their portfolio an entirely new market of sportfishing yachts.

In 2003, Hatteras introduced its iconic 80 Motor Yacht which produced strong sales for over a decade. By 2006, Brunswick had purchased Cabo Yachts and added that lineup to the New Bern Hatteras production facilities. Sadly, the global recession of 2008 affected the entire pleasure boating industry. Hatteras sales softened, and by 2013 Brunswick ceased production of Cabo Yachts and put Hatteras Yachts up for sale.

Hatteras 80 Motoryacht

In late summer 2013, Hatteras/Cabo Yachts was purchased from Brunswick Corporation by an affiliate of Versa Capital Management , a private equity investment firm. At the time, the Hatteras lineup was reported to have included motor yachts from 60 to 100 feet and convertible sportfishing models from 55 to 75 feet. In that same year, the first Hatteras ever built, the 41 Hatteras Convertible Sport Fisherman, Knit Wits , underwent a full restoration at the New Bern facility.

Then in spring 2021, White River Marine Group , owned by Bass Pro Shops and builders of Ranger, Tracker, Mako, Triton, Nitro, Tahoe, and others, purchased Hatteras Yachts from Versa Capital Management. Owner Johnny Morris promised to invest considerably in the New Bern facilities and move production of Ranger and Mako saltwater models to New Bern.

As of this writing, the Hatteras website shows the current model lineup to include four models: a 45-foot cruiser and three convertible sportfishermen in 59, 65, and 70 feet. Hatteras lays claim to several innovations over the years, most notably having produced the first fiberglass yacht over 40 feet and having it labelled as a “convertible," a significant break through in pleasure boating technology. It also claims to have pioneered “the revolutionary convex and modified-V hull.”

Other innovations include a double chine design for a dryer ride, deep hull tunnels for enhanced performance, and a patented air induction system. For over 60 years, the Hatteras name has stood as a benchmark for quality and luxury to knowledgeable pleasure boaters. White River Marine Group intends to extend that well-earned reputation into the next generation of Hatteras Yachts.

Hatteras Shipyard Heritage

Hatteras Yachts was born in High Point, North Carolina in 1959 when founder and avid fisherman Willis Slane set out to build stronger, more seaworthy boat than the traditional wooden fishing vessels. He wanted a boat that could easily handle the treacherous waters off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. For his boat, Slane enlisted, young naval architect Jack Hargrave, who at the time was designing yachts for Rybovich and later went on to create his own brand of yachts, Hargrave Yachts. Breaking from tradition, Slane used fiberglass to build the 41-foot (12.49m) KNIT WITS, which was launched in 1960. KNIT WITS was the first fiberglass yacht of its size and the use of fiberglass forever changed the industry.

After impressive sea trials, the word of KNIT WITS capabilities spread and Hatteras Yachts soon became the largest shipbuilder of yachts over 40 feet (12.19m), building both sportfish and motor yachts. In 1967, Hatteras Yachts added a second manufacturing facility in New Bern, North Carolina, which is where the company solely builds its yachts today. Over the years, the innovation at Hatteras Yachts has set standards in the industry, such as deep tunnel design to enhance performance and rudder response.
